Early History of the RAF

Postby Grays Harbor » Wed Nov 04, 2009 10:54 am

THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE

The Royal Air Force traces its lineage back to the Royal Artillery Corps Spotting Balloon Companies formed starting in 1857. Major General Sir Henry Thurmond began experiments with hot air balloons tethered to reinforced and enlarged caissons, and used for spotting the fall of artillery. The balloons were kept well back of the lines to prevent them being shot down by enemy sharpshooters. Their first use in a combat situation came in 1862 during the 5th Schwerin War with New Prussia, and the spotters proved their worth in directing the artillery fire. As artillery fire improved in accuracy and the advent of early machineguns, however, the enemy gunners by the 1890’s began to shoot the balloons down with alarming regularity, and the Balloon Spotting Companies were disbanded in 1896.

With the invention of the new “Flying machines” in the early 1900’s, the Artillery began once again looking at acquiring airborne spotters, and in 1907 they purchased 3 of the Lyman Flyers. Trials with them proved successful, and by 1910 there were 9 Companies of Spotters formed. As aircraft improved, they continued upgrading their observation aircraft.

The Signals Corps and Transportation Corps both took notice of the utility of aircraft and began forming their own Air Companies as well in 1911, the Signals acquiring light liaison aircraft to more rapidly move messaging between commands, and the Transport Corps purchasing larger aircraft capable of moving small amounts of essential equipment to forward areas.

The 1912-13 Daemoniata Relief Campaigns saw the wholesale use of all three Corps aircraft. One unexpected occurrence, however, was the appearance of enemy aircraft outfitted with machineguns to attack the spotters and transports. In 1913, the Cavalry Corps purchased locally 4 Daemoniatan monoplanes and outfitted them with machineguns of their own, fired by the observer, now termed the “airgunner”. In 1914 the cavalry commissioned several aircraft manufacturers to design and produce an Air Cavalry Fighting Machine. The result of that competition was the Guild Aero Company Snoop. The Cavalry formed 11 Troops of “Air Hussars” with the Snoop in 1916, using that type until 1924 when it began being replaced by the GAC Witch fighter.

1916 also saw the Artillerymen begin a new phase of their aircraft development when 4 BC-6 Transport aircraft were purchased and converted to drop 200mm artillery shells. Each of the BC-6bis aircraft could carry 4 of the large shells, or up to 12 smaller 105mm shells. The Ordnance Corps, seeing the usefulness of this, began development of specific bombs for use by the artillery aircraft. In 1918 the Artillery Air Corps developed the Vanquisher Bomb Carrier Aircraft, which they used until 1929.

In 1919 the Imperial Colonial Army, a separate military branch from the Royal Army began purchasing and using several of the Snoop fighters and Cable Seaplane Transports. The Imperial Colonial Army Air Corps was formed around these Air Troops, and the ICAAC continued in operation until 1949 as a separate and distinct Air Force, often developing their own aircraft separate from the Royal Army branches and later the RAF.

By the early 1920’s it began to become apparent that having 4 separate Air Corps within the Royal Army, the Signals Air Corps, the Royal Transport Air Corps, the Royal Artillery Bombardment and Observers Corps and the Cavalry’s Air Hussars was, at best, counterproductive and resulted in much duplication of effort. In March 1924 the 4 branches of the Royal Army flying groups and the ICAAC began negotiations to merge their services. The ICAAC dropped out in November, but the other 4 Corps all agreed to the merger, and in April 1925 they were separated from the Army to Form the Royal Air Force. The Air Hussars of the Cavalry formed the core of Fighter Command, the Artillery’s Bombardment Squadrons formed Bomber Command, The Artillery Observers and the Signals aircraft merged to form Communications & Intelligence Command and the Transport Corps aircraft formed Transport Command. The ICAAC continued operating as a separate Air Force until 1949 when the Imperial Colonial Army was fully integrated into the Royal Army, and the ICAAC was split off to be merged with the RAF.

Wow. You evidently care a lot about your nation :D nice
I was a true left winger, then people taught me otherwise. I was a right winger, but things seem better then that.

Looks like its smart liberalism for the win.

The Ministry of Defense is best know for their two main branches of service, the Royal Army and Royal Air Force. Lesser known, but equally vital, are the two non-combatant services, the Royal Corps of Engineers and the Royal medical Corps.

The Royal Corps of Engineers as a separate branch of the MoD was formed in 1952. The Army Sappers and Pioneers had long taken on many civil works projects; however, by the late 40’s it was becoming too diverse in their activities, having to divide their duties between military and civil responsibilities. A yearlong study commissioned by the MoD in 1950 came to the conclusion that in order to get the most effective use of the Sappers Corps was to concentrate on the military aspect. Parliament, however, was unwilling to lose the civil aspect of their works that were vital to the Kingdoms highways and waterways. The Engineers Act of 1951 created the Corps of Engineers as a separate branch. Initially, Parliament wanted to make them a part of the Home Ministry, but after much testimony by Sapper and Pioneer Officers and Civil Engineers it was determined that it was best utilized as part of the MoD as they had long experience with it. In 1956 the Corps was classified as a non-combatant branch of the Ministry, and was made eligible for the National Service. Now, young men and women called to national Service could choose the Corps as a non-combat option.

Currently the Corps is responsible for the maintenance and construction of all national highways and bridges, for maintaining waterways and harbours for safe navigation, and for maintenance and construction of national and governmental buildings. They also cooperate with the Forestry Service in the National Parks, as well as with forest fire fighting, the Corps having one of the finest trained and best equipped Smoke Jumper Brigades in the world.

The Royal Medical Corps was formed in 1988 and is the newest of all the branches of service. Its formation was accomplished by the merging of Army, Air Force and Corps of Engineers Medical Departments. Several studies conducted by the MoD determined that each of the three branches having separate medical staff and facilities was causing considerable duplication of effort and costing far too much. The Admiralty and Navy had initially shown some interest in also joining in the RMC; however, they decided to continue with their own Medical Branch, as the Admiralty is a separate ministry. By concentrating all medical personnel in one branch which then allocated resources to the other three based on service requirements and needs cut costs considerably as well as streamlined efforts. The Air Force and Engineers rely totally on the RMC for all medical services; the Army, however, continues to maintain a small combat medical arm which provides all combat medics to line units.

The RMC has a full range of all medical personnel available for assignment and the personnel can frequently choose whether to serve with one of the other Branch of the MoD, or to serve in RMC medical facilities. Medical personnel assigned to the Army, Air Force and Engineers can choose to wear either RMC uniform or the uniform of the branch they are assigned to, but if the latter they must also be in accordance with all pertinent uniform regulations of that service. They continue to wear RMC rank insignia even on the uniforms of the other three though.

The Army provides all transport and medical vehicles for RMC personnel assigned to the Army and Air Force overseas in combat deployments and military bases, the Engineers do the same domestically, and the Air Force operates all RMC medical aircraft domestically and overseas, and helicopters overseas, while the RMC operates their own medical helicopters domestically. The RMC is currently replacing many of their helicopters with the new Cairn SVTOL transport.

Website for the RCoE and RMC As this site is still under construction, so far all that is on display are rank insignia, specialty badges and Unit Insignia. More will be added, such as uniforms and equipment, as it becomes available.

The Royal Police as a unified service was born in 1894 when the Justice Ministry consolodated all Local, County, provincial and national Police Services into one cohesive unit. The prime reason for this was to stop the jurusdictional fights which frequently happened. A side benefit was that by reorganizing, it made the police services much more efficient, them having a sense of cohesiveness.

Police Officers, when they join the service, are trained in one of 3 central training Academies. The three academies are the Westport PD Police Academy, the Royal Loannis Police Academy and the Eugene Police Academy. The former Aberdeen PD Police Academy is now the Senior Officers Academy. When an Officer complete his or her course of instruction at the Academy and is commissioned Constable, they are given a choice of where to serve, top graduates getting first selection. Many officers will choose to serve their career in one locale, while many will also transfer between departments.

The Royal Police operates Municipal, Shire, County, Colonial and Provincial Police Departments. All have equal jurisdiction.

Rank Structure of the Royal Police.

Police badges are all identical except for the central device which is taken from the locality served.

The uniform of the Royal Police is a Red jacket, Dark Grey trousers or skirt, and a Light Grey shirt. The Ceremonial uniform is Dark Blue jacket with Red facings and Dark Grey trousers or skirt. When the Police Departments were consolodated in 1894, there was some discussion as to what uniform they would wear. Each department had their own uniform, with about 45% each having either Red or Blue, and the remaining 10% having various shades of Grey, Brown or Green. As a compromise, the Red was chosen for everyday wear, primarily for the visibility of it, and the Blue for the ceremonials. Also on the ceremonials, and occasionally on the Reds as well, there will be a cuffband on the sleeves in the department check pattern and colours.

Female unifroms are on the left, Male uniforms are on the right.
Image

The headgear for the uniform is kept fairly standard, the same as the uniforms. The only differentiation between departments is the colour of the check pattern on the hatband. Each department has colours assigned, some having black/white, some black/yellow, red/yellow or blue/yellow. These are but a few of the variations employed. This colour pattern is also often repeated on the departments vehicles.
Image

Each Department is given considerable latitude on how their police vehicles are painted, and in what vehicles are used. Generally, they stay close to their department colours. The result is that there is quite some diversity in what the cars look like.

Image

Each department is given a certain budget to work within, and it is up to them to decide what type of vehicles and equipment to purchase. This policy helps avoid micromanagement of the various departments from RP Headquarters in Aberdeen.

The Royal Forestry Service was formed in 1904 by the Ministry of Parks and Preservation to watch over and maintain the nations National Parks and National Forests as well as other Crown Historic Sites. It is their stewardship which has kept the Kingdoms Parks and Preserves some of the finest maintained around.

The RFS is a non-military uniformed branch of the government, and falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Parks and Preservation.

Uniforms of the RFS

Pay Grade is worn on the shoulder of all uniforms. The daily wear uniforms are the Service Dress and Service Casual uniforms. The Ceremonial uniform is for formal ocassions. Female uniforms are on the left, Male on the right.

The shoulder patch is common to all RFS personnel, the only difference being that each District will have its number on the patch. There are currently 34 Districts in the Kingdom, Territories and Colonies.

Royal Army Uniforms

Series 1A-Mess Dress - The mess dress uniform is worn only on formal occassions. Officers mess dress jackets have arm of service colour on the cuff, lapel, and waistcoat for Brigadier and below, and General Officers wear gold braid for the cuffs and have red velvet lapels and a red waistcoat. Rank insignia is worn on a shoulder braid and cuff braid is worn. Enlisted mess dress has the same system of arm of service colours, however rank is worn on the sleeves. Regimental insignia is worn on the left collar of both officer and enlisted, with arm of service insignia on the right collar. Only full medals and orders are worn.
Series 1B-Service Dress Uniform - The Type 2B is worn as the dress uniform for occassions other than when mess dress is called for. The dress and undress uniforms are nearly identical in cut, except that only the dress has the stand collar and coat belt which is in arm of service colours for Brigadier and below, Gold-braid collar and a solid red belt for General Officers. Ribbons are worn centered over the left breast pocket, and specialist badges are worn over the right breast pocket. Regimental/Unit insignia is worn on the collar and major unit insignia is not worn. Enlisted service stripes are worn on the right cuff, one stripe for each 4 years service. Rank is worn on the epaulets for officers, and sleeves for enlisted. Trousers are dark grey and have a 5cm red stripe for officers, a 2.5cm stripe in arm of service colour for NCO's and no stripe for privates and lance corporals.
Series 2A-Service Undress Uniform - The undress uniform is the everyday garrison uniform. It may also be worn for travel in place of the Series 1B. Placement of awards, badges and service stripes is the same as Series 1B, except major unit insignia is worn on the left sleeve at the shoulder and regimental/unit insignia is worn on the lapels. General Officers have a red lapel tab instead of regimental/unit insignia. Trousers are dark grey and have no stripe. The overcoat, which may be worn with Mess, Dress and Undress uniform, is black and only rank is worn, on the epaulets for officers and the sleeves for enlisted. The officers overcoat has a gold cuff band.
Series 2B-Service Casual Uniform - The service casual uniform is that worn under the 2B coat. It may be either short or long sleeved. The short sleeved shirt, when worn without the coat, may be worn open collared without the tie.
Series 3-Field Uniform - The field uniform consists of a camouflaged jacket and pants. All rank, unit and name badges are subdued. Regimental insignia is not worn except on the beret.

Ceremonial Uniforms of the Royal Guards Regiment

The 1st Battalion (Ceremonial Battalion) of the RGR has special uniforms for wear when on duty. From left to right, 1st Company is the Guard Grenadiers, 2nd Company is The Kings Rifles, 3rd Company is the Household Cavalry and 4th Company is the Guards Artillery. The uniforms are based on those worn in the early 19th century. Officer rank is the shoulder braid worn with the mess dress, enlisted wear their sleeve stripes. Headquarters Company of 1st Battalion, and 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions all wear standard army uniform.

Headgear

The Red beret is the standard headgear for most of the Royal Army. Some noteworthy units have their own colours, the Rangers and Paras have the green beret, the Royal Guards Regiment a buff beret, the 4th Aberdeen Cuirassier a white beret and the Kings Foreign Legion a slate blue beret.

All berets have the unit badge on them, enlisted the standard unit insignia, officers beret badge has a gold wreath and crown around the unit crest.

Image

Officers also have the Service cap which is worn with the Mess Dress, Service Dress and Service Unfress Uniforms. It is mandatory for the first two and optional for the latter, where the beret may be worn instead. The service cap device worn is from the Duchy, Province or Colony the Offcier is from. On the badge for Loannis and Malkier, the unit designation is carried in the scrollwork.
