On the matter of zombie threads

Postby The Black Forrest » Sat Oct 17, 2009 9:30 pm

Zombie threads seem to pop up from time to time and a passing thought was maybe this was due to the "View your posts" link.

Maybe a way to deal with this is to have an agreed set time for something to be declared a zombie and then have it flushed from displaying on the link?

It is quite difficult to address in all forums because someone might post something very valuable to the topic after about a month's thinking such as in the WA forums, but Forum 7 is already automatically pruned after 120 hours, maybe not counting time lost or gained due to daylight savings adjustments.

No worries. Just an "hey why not?" thing. :)

Another problem is that a lot of people (like me) like to look back at their history. Recently, I went back to my first posts on jolt and found that I was most definitely a newbie (thankfully).

Also, there are things like factbooks which may not be updated, but are referenced. I have a navy thread where I store all of my naval info. It hasn't been updated since early September (I haven't increased my armed forces) but I go back and reference it a lot, and often copy and paste form it for ORBATs.
If you ever have an RPing question, please TG me about it.

Couldn't topics be locked after 14 days of inactivity by default? (Other than in Forum7 where this would never be the case since topics are deleted by then.) It could (and I mean hypothetically, I don't know if our forums could do this with technical limits) work the same as the F7 prune, except rather than delete it just locks topics, then the posts are still there.

I can't think of any normal thread that goes 14 days without posts and still have a use.

Again, I don't know if our forum could even be coded to do anything like this. I think it'd really help certain forums that have rampant zombie problems if it could be programed.

Actually, I can think of some threads. Like I said, factbooks. Many factbooks go unchanged for a long time, and every once in awhile, the owner decides to edit them. If it locked after 14 days, they'd need to create a new one. Also, some storefronts go unnoticed for awhile, but they remain in people's sigs, and eventually get business.

Yeah I figured the RPers would have some sort of thread like that... RPers do the nuttiest things...

Anyway, I still think it'd help the other parts of the forums, even if the RP sections were excluded from the feature. I'm not sure how common the threads are that you are talking about, but if it's rare to have one that inactive a manual-moderator-unlock via moderation request probably could allow them to post a new message in their "factbook" (I thought y'all had NSwiki for this junk!!) after the 14 days...

(Although moderations worst fear these days has been a phrase starting with the words "Manual-Moderator:  )

I update a thread on the Founderless Regions Alliance every couple of weeks... I wouldn't want it locked just because I'm a day late with that.

I don't give a flying fuck how my position makes you feel,

So save yourself a lot of wasted time trying to argue with me,
don't compile a list of of my posts so you can try to point out the flaws in my beliefs,
you will not win.

See the official forum rules for a definition of spam. Do it again and you'll earn yourself an official warning.

I’d oppose this, on the basis that one of the threads that’s pretty useful for me (the political compass one in NSG) has gone through periods of inactivity longer then that, and yet still reactivates itself every once in a while.

In regards to RPing, personally, I have several threads that I am gradually working on that I don't post in except maybe once a month. And, also, there are those who travel or are away from NS for a long period of time (like myself) who leave their threads on hold and wish to return to RPing in them when they become active again. So I can imagine such a rule would become a headache in the RP sections.
