Cartridge Information

[.360 Auto]
NS Draftroom Writeup

[.40DDI (10x23mm)]
This round was developed as a requirement for a replacement to the ancient 10.5x33mm cartridge. This round has very similar killing power to the mighty 10mm Auto cartridge in a more compact and reliable bottlenecked form. While it has a shorter casing, the casing is wider, allowing for just as much powder to be packed in. The bottlenecked design also is very beneficial for feeding, as bottlenecked cartridges are superior to straight-walled cartridges in this aspect. The round boasts both flat trajectory shooting and superior knockdown power: a heavy round moving at a high velocity. This is a deadly combination that results in knockdown power vastly superior to that of the famed .45 ACP cartridge. DDI has developed several loads for this cartridge. There is a 230 grain full metal jacket (FMJ) cartridge for superior penetration of cover and all around utility. A 215 grain jacketed hollow point (JHP) round designed for maximum expansion in a target is also in service, boasting superior killing power but inferior penetration to the FMJ round. Several other loads, including a frangible load, are available as well. However, the primary round used by the military is the Armor Piercing Fragmenting Jacket cartridge.

DDI, of course, has recognized that not all targets (if not most) are unarmored. As a result, a special round was developed to deal with both armored. This 165 grain round, called the Armor Piercing Fragmenting Jacket (APFJ), is capable of both penetrating a Level IIIA Kevlar vest, and cause a grievous wound on an unarmored target. This round consists of a pointed tungsten nose and core section immersed in a blended metal jacket that flattens out upon impact with a hardened surface, or an object unable to be penetrated (such as a vest). When this happens, the tungsten core is able to continue through, piercing the armor.

With unarmored targets, the case expands as the round penetrates. This both creates a massive wound from the fragments, and causes the core to begin to tumble within the target, creating an extremely lethal and difficult to treat wound. The lighter 165 grain load boasts both lower recoil and higher velocity, allowing for superior armor penetration properties.

The .40 Caliber DDI cartridge is an inherently accurate, as well. This is also a highly streamlined cartridge with a flat trajectory, meaning that the round's flight path will remain the same for most of the projected engagement range. A shooter will spend less time figuring out how much higher they have to aim given a range and be able to fire much more quickly and accurately.

[6.7 x 35mm CTA]
The 6.7x35mm CTA round which originally made its debut with the popular AVIR assault rifle the ADEC was designed to supplement. Use of this round allows total ammunition commonality within an infantry squad or platoon while at the same time offering the ADEC a relatively low impulse but high powered cartridge. In its standard load, the 6.7x35mm CTA cartridge puts a 110 grain projectile downrange at velocities exceeding 2,700 feet per second out of an 18" barrel, hitting its target with over 1,780 foot pounds of energy. Accuracy and lethality performance at range is also excellent thanks to the relatively heavy round. A key advantage of the 6.7x35mm round is its unusual design: it is a cased telescoping round, meaning that the actual projectile is set within the case, with the powder all around it. This creates a much shorter, more volume efficient round, one that is ideal for usage with the ADEC light machine gun in that it does not require a terribly long receiver in order for the constant recoil action to function properly in addition to allowing a 300-round combat box to be easily utilized alongside the weapon, granting the infantry squad an excellent tool for sustained fire. In addition, the casing is constructed of composite material, creating a round that is in effect 40% lighter than a round of comparable power with a brass case. The current primary export load for the 6.7x35mm CTA cartridge is the APHP (armor piercing hollow point). This particular round features a steel core surrounded by a lead inner jacket and copper outer jacket, the tip of the projectile being designed on the basis of a hollow point with the tip of the steel core protruding outwards. When impacting a target, such as a person, the jacket expands outwards, while the steel core continues through into the target, hopefully yawing and causing even more damage. This allows for both a large entry wound and the possibility of the steel core causing even more internal damage to the target. When used against armored targets, the jackets would essentially flatten against the target while the narrower steel core would be able to follow through, hopefully penetrating the armor. The result is a round that is extremely lethal against unarmored targets while still being capable of penetrating armor. This is only one of many loads for the versatile 6.7x35mm CTA cartridge, others including jacketed hollow point (JHP), full metal jacket (FMJ), frangible (FG), armor piercing (AP), and a variety of tracer rounds. There are not currently any plans for any versions of the ADEC in other calibers, although it should be noted that the design, unlike the AVIR, is not reliant on the use of a CTA cartridge, and as a result Armacorp has admitted that it should be possible to offer the ADEC in other calibers should the need arise.

[6.8 x 51mm]
The 6.8x51mm round was created in response to the requirement of the Imperial Layartebian Military to replace the 5.56x45mm rounds in service. The result was a combination of the 6.8 Remington SPC and the 7.62x51mm round. By utilizing the bullets of the 6.8 Remington SPC with the case of the 7.62x51mm, the result was a highly powerful and very capable round. With 59.15% more capacity in the 51mm case versus the 43mm of the Remington SPC, the same rounds can be propelled at a much higher velocity for more energy and a flatter trajectory. Because the full round size is the same in length as the 7.62x51mm round, any weapon that can utilized this round can also utilize the 6.8x51mm with a minor change of the barrel to accommodate the smaller round. The round is set to just 52,000 PSI but match ammunition is pressured out to 58,000 PSI. There are four bullet weights available. The 90-grain is the lightest and also the fastest. It can be used with any barrel length. A 100-grain and a 115-grain round make up harder hitting capacities and they too can be used from any barrel length. Match ammunition for sniper and machine gun duties is 130-grain and pressured up to 58,000 PSI. It cannot be used in barrels under 16 inches in length. The 6.8x51mm round has more energy than the 5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm, and 7.62x39mm rounds used in the AK and AR-15 type weapons. The round entered service in 2004.

Image

[7.82 x 80mm]
The 7.82x80mm round was developed from the .300RUM round. The case was extended from 72.39mm to 80mm, increasing the overall length to 99mm and giving it 10.5% more capacity, for 121.771 grains of water. The case utilizes the same 200-grain bullet as the .300RUM but propels it at a much higher velocity. Out of a 24 inch barrel, the muzzle velocity is 1,085 meters per second versus just 951 meters per second for the regular .300RUM round, offering over 1,000 ft·lb more energy at the same 65,000 PSI loading, 5,620 ft-lb in total.

[15.5 x 115m]
The 15.5x115mm round is a heavy machine gun and sniper rifle round, modeled after the 14.5x114mm Soviet round. It's aim is to offer a significantly larger amount of power than the 12.7x99mm rounds used throughout the world's armies and even the 14.5x114mm rounds. It is a very large and heavy round that is optimized for high speed and high penetration. The total round is 157mm in length with the 115mm case supporting up to 656.34 grains of water. The standard bullet weight is 1,050 grains. With a loading of 60,000 PSI (maximum supported up to 65,000 PSI), this round has a significant amount of energy. Out of the 59.05 inch barrel of the M31, it has a muzzle velocity of 1,202 meters per second and a muzzle energy of 36,268 ft·lbs. This is over 50% more than the 14.5x114mm and over 240% more than the 12.7x99mm. Other available bullets include AP-I, SLAP, and match ammunition, which weighs 1,150 grains and is used in the M116 Black Mamba. This round has a muzzle velocity of 1,067 meters per second out of a 39.5 inch barrel and 31,286 ft·lbs of energy, which is still more than the 14.5x114mm and 12.7x99mm rounds.

M5 Series Special Purpose Grenades
Image

[History]
The M5 series was developed by ARGUS as the Model 5 and adopted by the Imperial Layartebian Military shortly thereafter to replace all of its previously used special-purpose grenades. The cylindrical design allows for a considerable amount of volume. The M5 series has become a widespread weapon for law enforcement organizations as well as the military and it is expected to remain in service for several decades. All devices are waterproof up to 65 feet (20 meters).

[Variants]
The M5A series is a smoke grenade with eight subvariants M5A1 through M5A8 marking the different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, white, and black. They are green with a dual band indicating the color of the smoke. They produce smoke for up to 60 seconds and can hide a man-sized target in under 6 seconds. Their smoke is not an irritant and has a pH rating of between 5.6 and 6.2.

The M5B series is for crowd control and uses CS gas. They are black with one gray and one red band. It burns for 25 to 30 seconds.

The M5C series is an incendiary device that uses thermate. They are gray with one purple and one red band. They burn at 8312°F (4600°C) for up to 40 seconds and they can melt through 13mm of RHA.

The M5D series is a highly specialized, shaped-charge system designed to destroy machinery and heavy equipment through penetration and spalling. They are black without any special bands. They can penetrate up to 180mm of RHA.

The M5E series is a non-lethal Flashbang. They are black with one gray and one green band. The sound they produce is 165 dB at 1 meter, which is supplemented by a flash of up to 8 million candela at 1 meter for 10 milliseconds. They also produce a 0.75 psi overpressure at 1 meter.

From top to bottom: M6A, M6B; M6C, M6D; M6E

[History]
The M6 series was developed by ARGUS as the Model 6 and adopted by the Imperial Layartebian Military shortly thereafter to replace all of its previously used hand grenades, just as the Model 5 was. The spherical design allows for optimization of range through throwing. The M6 series has become a widespread weapon for law enforcement organizations as well as the military and it is expected to remain in service for several decades. All devices are waterproof up to 65 feet (20 meters) and they can be thrown around 40 meters, on average.

[Variants]
The M6A series is the standard, defensive or fragmentation, hand grenade. It can cause casualties up to 15 meters and has approximately 10.5 penetrations per m² at 5 meters. Inside it contains as many as 2,000 projectiles and it is made of a thermoplastic case.

The M6B series is an offensive, hand grenade. Instead of a fragmentation effect, it is focused on concussion and heat effects, which are associated with blast. As such, it has a casualty radius of only about 5 meters. Like the M6A it is made out of thermoplastic.

The M6C series is an incendiary, hand grenade. While its primary role is incendiary, the grenade also produces a blinding flash of light and a thick smoke, designed to blind and choke enemies, limiting their escape from the grenade. The incendiary mixture burns at 2732°F (1500°C) for up to 5 minutes. The grenade scatters its incendiary effects over an area and is extremely effective against bunkers and other enclosed targets. It is made out of thermoplastic.

The M6D series is a less-lethal device that is constructed out of hardened rubber. It is filled with 150 5-millimeter hardened rubber balls and combines these with Flashbang effects. The sound they produce is 160 dB at 2 meters, which is supplemented by a flash of up to 6 million candela at 2 meter for 10 milliseconds. They can also include CS, CN, or OC to enhance their effects with irritation. They are highly effective in crowd control scenarios.

The M6E series is a training round that is produced out of perforated aluminum and it is reusable. They will produce a sound of up to 105 dB at 20 meters and smoke, which indicate that they have "detonated."

Land Mines

[History]
The Empire is not a signatory to any treaty banning land mines and though their use has met with considerable criticism from near and afar, the Empire continues to employ them frequently. Land mines originated in Layarteb in ancient times but the modern mines used today date back to the 1930s, 1940s, and 1960s, when the Empire was known as the Republic of Layarteb. Since then, land mines have been used in every major and minor conflict fought by Layartebian ground forces and likely they will continue to be used in the future.

[Variants]
The M16 Bounding Mine is an anti-personnel mine buried underground. It is activated through weight and when activated, it rises to approximately 3.5 feet before detonating in a radial, 360° pattern. The current version in service is the M16A2. It is one of the worst mines considered to face.

The M18 Claymore is an anti-personnel mine that is normally placed above ground. It is activated through remote or tripwire and is a directional mine. Upon detonation, it sprays steel balls in a 60° fan up to 6.5 feet in height and 50 meters in both width distance. It remains effective out to 100 meters. The M18A1 is the current version in service.

The M19 Anti-Tank Mine is an anti-tank mine that is buried underground. It is activated through pressure and when activated, it will detonate upwards into the tank. The M19A1 is the current version in service.

The M21 Anti-Tank Mine is an anti-tank mine that is buried undergrond. It is activated through pressure or contact to its tilt-rod. The M21A1 is the current version in service.

The M86 Pursuit Deterrant Munition is a small, anti-personnel mine that is normally placed above ground. It is activated through a tripwire and functions like a hand grenade.

M31 Heavy Machine Gun
Image

[History]
The M31 Heavy Machine Gun was designed in order to provide more firepower than the M2 Browning could provide. Its development started in 1981 and the first variants were equipping Layartebian vehicles in early 1984. The M31 HMG was designed around the powerful 15.5x115mm high-powered round and around a dual-feed mechanism. The M31 HMG was designed strictly to be used by vehicles and aircraft, primarily helicopters. However, with enough men, the weapon could be employed in a crew-served capacity; although, this is primarily reserved for fortified and non-mobile positions. Since 1984, the M31 HMG has been used in every Layartebian conflict and it has never been a hindrance in combat. It is a favorite among men as it provides heavy firepower in combat and it has been mounted on all Layartebian light vehicles.

[Variants]
The M31A1 Heavy Machine Gun is the primary variant and was the originally designed variant from 1984. There have been no changes to the weapon since 1984.

The M31A2 Heavy Machine Gun was a modified variant that entered service in 1986 with a single-feed mechanism. It was designed for vehicles where a single ammunition box was preferable to two.

The M31A3 Heavy Machine Gun is a modified "A2" variant that also entered service in 1986. It changed the trigger group to only automatic versus the select fire options on the "A1" and "A2" variants.

M35 Light Machine Gun
Image

[History]
The M35 Light Machine Gun was designed in an effort to find a replacement for the M240. The M240 LMG never proved itself unfriendly in combat but in the early 1990s, there arose the need for a replacement. The M35 LMG entered service in 1995 as that replacement and it was soon modified for 5.56x45mm ammunition and subsequently for 6.8x51mm ammunition when the round became the standard round for all Layartebian assault rifles. Lighter than the M240, the M35 LMG featured a rail system for the mounting of accessories. A select-fire weapon, the M35 LMG is belt-felt and has proven itself to be more of a favorite amongst troops than the M240 was. It can also be mounted on vehicles and has been used extensively in operations since 1995.

[Variants]
The M35A1 LMG is the original model.

The M35A2 LMG entered service at the same time as the M35A1 LMG but chambered for 5.56x45mm.

The M35A3 LMG entered service in 2004 when the Imperial Layartebian Military officially adopted the 6.8x51mm round. At the same time, the M35A2 LMG was phased out and retired.

The M35A4 LMG entered service at the same time as the A1 as a co-axial weapon. It features a single trigger option and was made specifically for co-axial use.

The M50 Heavy Machine Gun is a redesignation of the venerable M2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun, which entered service in 1921. The M50 is the M2E2 modification, which is often called the "Enhanced 50." The M50 also includes a select-fire trigger group but is largely unchanged since the original M2 Browning was put into service.

[Variants]
The M50A1 is the primary variant in service and is essentially the M2 E-50 with a select-fire trigger group.

Image

From top to bottom: M80A1, M80A3

[History]
The M80 Assault Rifle was developed in the early 2000s and entered service in 2004 when the Imperial Layartebian Military switched to 6.8x51mm. The M80 is a modified H&K SL8 chambered to fire this bigger round. Modifications made to the weapon allow it to fire the 6.8x51mm round highly effectively. It is equipped with a rail system and can fit a suppressor. The M80 faced off directly against the M81 Assault Rifle, which was a modified SIG 556. Although the M80 lost to the M81 in the final phase of the competition, the M80 was not dropped entirely. The M80A1 Assault Rifle was the primary model but it was not adopted.

The M80A2 Special Purpose Rifle is an accurized weapon designed for long-range, sniper duties.

M105 Tactical Defense Pistol (TDP)
Image

[History]
The M105 Tactical Defense Pistol was adopted in 1995 after the M9 Beretta 92 proved to be too ineffective due to its 9x19mm round. It still remains in limited service, however.

The M105A1 is the primary variant.

M106 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW)
Image

[History]
The M106 Squad Automatic Weapon was adopted in 2004 to replace the M249 SAW when the ILM switched to 6.8x51mm. In doing so, the necessity to adopt a new SAW was what drove the manufacture and design of the M106. Originally bought by the Layartebian Foreign Legion to replace the M249 in early 1999, the M106 proved itself to be highly rugged and reliable in compact with less instances of jams than the M249.

[Variants]
The M106A1 SAW is the primary variant in service.

The M106A2 SAW is a shortened version for paratroopers.

The M106A3 SAW is a modified variant designed to fire the 7.62x51mm round.

[History]
The M111 MAW was adopted in 2006 to function as a Special Operations weapon. It was developed from the Central Prestonian E19 series and it had originally been a contender against the M80, M81, and M114 in 2004 but lost like the M80 to the M81. The M111 offered durability and ruggedness like the M80 and M81 but more modularity, raising its price and complexity. It was a perfect fit for Special Forces.

[Variants]
The M111A1 MAW is the primary variant.

The M111A2 MAW has a longer barrel for marksman duties.

The M111A3 MAW has a slightly shorter barrel than the "A1" but it was not adopted.

The M111A4 MAW is a short carbine.

The M111A5 MAW is a suppressed M111A4 with a smaller stock.

  • Action: Gas-operated, rotating bolt

M112 Viper
Image
Image
From top to bottom: M112A1, M112A4

[History]
The M112 Viper was adopted in 2006 along with the M111 MAW. The Viper was developed from the M111 but chambered initially in .40DDI to serve as a submachine gun but was quickly rechambered to .360 Auto when the round replaced the .40DDI as the primary small service round in the Imperial Layartebian Military. Based off the M111A4 and M111A5, the Viper has largely replaced the M43 Submachine Gun in primary service as it offers superior power to the 9x19mm round the M43 fires. It is rugged, reliable, and accurate but not nearly as venerable as the M43.

[Variants]
The M112A1 Viper is identical to the M111A4 and the primary variant.

The M112A2 Viper is identical to the M111A5 and features a much smaller buttstock.

The M112A3 Viper is an integrally suppressed variant of the "A1."

The M112A4 Viper is an integrally suppressed variant of the "A2."

The M112B1 Viper is identical to the M112A1 but it is chambered in .360 Auto.

The M112B2 Viper is identical to the M112A2 but it is chambered in .360 Auto.

The M112B3 Viper is identical to the M112A3 but it is chambered in .360 Auto.

The M112B4 Viper is identical to the M112A4 but it is chambered in .360 Auto.

[Specifications]

  • Caliber: .40DDI [A]; .360 Auto [B]
  • Action: Gas-operated, rotating bolt
  • Fire Mode: Single, Burst (3), Automatic
