LABOR DAY ISSUE [DRAFT]

Postby TurtleShroom » Mon Sep 05, 2011 5:13 pm

Happy Labor Day! This evening, I read about a tale of a miscarriage of justice in Illinois: the Haymarket’s Affair of the 1890s. Here, seven men were charged with conspiracy to murder and sentenced to death. Future investigations allege that they were innocent, and surprisingly, the bomb that led to their trials and convictions may have been thrown by an agent provocateur hired by a company, tied to the Pinkerton Detective Agency.

This Issue attempts to create a similar situation, though certainly not a mirror of the incident. It’s based on this.

ISSUE NAME: Did Labor Throw the Bomb?

VALIDITY: Exclusively for nations that do not have minimum wage laws, and/or are very pro-business, and/or have violently suppressed the working man, and/or are Corporate Police States, Iron Fist Consumerists, or Compulsory Consumer States, and/or have a very free market, and/or are libertarian out the yin-yang.

DESCRIPTION: Recently, a large gathering of blue-collar workers and Marxists gathered at a park in @@CAPITAL@@ to rally together for better working conditions. The demonstration turned violent after @@NAME@@ police appeared and were insulted, and in the end, someone, somewhere, threw a bomb, killing untold numbers. Now, seven of the Marxists present are accused of conspiring to a murder, and are facing the nation’s maximum sentence. However, there is no feasible evidence that they performed the act, and in fact, some believe that an agent provocateur, hired by a local company, threw the bomb to frame them. Having exhausted most every legal avenue, the fate of the “Red Martyrs” has come to you.

THE ISSUE:
[option]“These men are INNOCENT.” says the seven’s lawyer and trade union member. “They and their comrades attended this rally to express their desire for better treatment. A bomb goes off, and suddenly, THE MAN is blaming us? Have you stopped to think that there might be corruption around here? I suggest that the government immediately and brutally investigate all business entities and their contacts. By Karl’s beard, there’s an agent provocateur afoot, and I know it! Surely a minuscule handful of furlough days is worth righteousness, right?”
[effect]the nation has ordered a temporary shutdown of the private sector to investigate charges of corruption
[stats]Corruption slashed extremely, Economy cut, Happiness down, Growing Economy down, Law and Order up, Prison Population up, Government Size slightly down (lots of fired bureaucrats working with the “killers”), Pro-Business down, Free Market down, Civil Rights ever-so-slightly up

[option]“What a load of Jennifer Government.” scoffs @@RANDOMNAME@@, a multi-billionaire “captain of industry”. “These dirty commies have no one to blame but themselves. While I’m sad that ‘human resources’ were killed, if those punks didn’t congregate and mock the police, this would have never happened. Let the reds die. They’re hurting my bottom line, anyway.” There is a pause. “Oh, and how about cracking down on these dang union goons? Without us, they’d be OUT ON THE STREETS. Ingrates!”
[effect]a crackdown on organized labor has followed after a massacre at a union protest
[stats]Corruption up, Economy skyrockets, Civil Rights down, nation becomes more Rightist, nation becomes more Authoritarian, Cynicism up, “pro-business” added to Government Description, Labor Unions cut, Minimum Wage abolished (if applicable), Workers’ Rights down, Free Market up, Death by Suicide in Police Custody up (a reference to one Haymarket guy killing himself), Law and Order up, “Death by Working” slightly up

[options]“Just freeing these poor, innocent men and cleaning up house isn’t enough.” says @@RANDOMNAME@@, head of the @@NAME@@ Federation of Really Whiny Workers, and a devout Marxist. “To truly bring justice both to these seven and to the entire nation, we should enact their reforms! Minimum wage! Eight-hour workweek, forty hours! Workers’ rights! Solidarity and all that good jazz! Screw the expenses; screw the economy; THAT is the only way to fix this Miscarriage of Justice!”
[effect]the horizon is getting redder by the minute as @@NAME@@ has enacted sweeping workers’ rights legislation
[stats]Leftism up, Free Market slashed, Labor Unions up, Economy brutally slashed, Corruption down, Minimum Wage appears, Living Wage appears, Regulations up, Compassion skyrockets, Equality up, Civil Rights soar, nation becomes far less Pro-Business, Taxes up, Happiness up, Taxes up

:D
