Regardless of all exchanged communications, the Light Cruiser Granica 7, at the high orbit of the planet, began to slowly descend towards the planet's atmosphere, a few moments after it was confirmed they have apparently agreed with their terms. As their massive ship approached the planet, it was their intent of colonization. At such moment, Vice-Admiral Jarek Symanski issued further orders through the phone:

"Granica 7, initiate transmission of all survey data to contact. Prioritize seismic, volcanic and hurricane predictions in the information streams. Prepare for phase I."

Afterwards, he gave the next order to his own crew:

"All of Flota Granica but Granica 7, initiate jumps at designated points."

Slowly, their fleet jumped and returned dispersed through the system, covering much of it, as they seemingly were scanning every inch of the system. Meanwhile, the Heavy Cruiser approached the massive behemoth, as the voice ushered, among other things:

"Requesting permission to dock."

Soon the Vice-Admiral would have his meeting with these foreigners, as he began to move towards the docking bay of the Heavy Cruiser, to get ready for leaving once the permission was confirmed, and the docking clamps in place, which would adjust themselves to fit to the specifications of the foreigner ship docking bay. He knew very well the gravity of the situation, from having such power so close to the home world, once again perhaps threatened, and thus, he reminded to stay cool, cautious and not say more than what is needed. Maybe this time the pen would replace the sword.

"Beginning atmospheric entry in three, two, one..."

Suddenly, a vacuum surrounded the saucer-shaped light cruiser, as the massive reentry heat passed through the vacuum, and it began to rapidly descend. Looking through the projected image of the ground below, of the oceans, not as large as those in Earth, it became clear for Captain Treblinski that they have finally found what they were looking for. Magnifying the sight countless time, terrain began to be surveyed carefully by the crew, until they finally decided to land near and east from a large, slowly progressing isthmus that extended for almost a thousand miles of length, separating two super-continents, roughly western and eastern, that formed most of this world, probably part of a former single continent, and other than they, from they quick mapping, there was only a few islands, the ice caps, slightly bigger than in Earth as the planet was a quite farther from its star, relatively speaking as such star was a blue star, and a big continent in the bottom, right in the middle of both super continents. The terrain was heavily forested, and apparently, with some gentle hills and bathed by several rivers.

The large flying saucer gently landed over a big clearing among the temperate alien woods of the planet, featured by the predominantly blue leaves and blue-colored vegetation instead of what was usual on Earth or most planets of the New Paradigm. Looking at the ramp about to be lowered, Captain Treblinski, with his space suit now replaced by a ceremonial Navy officer uniform, bolt-action gauss rifle and saber included, received a flag from one of his crew members, the old flag of Poland. The alien, bluish skylight began to mingle with the artificial white lights of the cruiser as the ramp lowered, until the paradise was revealed. Despite the blue vegetation, the sounds of chirping birds and the purest air the captain ever breathed made it clear how it was important to proceed. And thus, he began to get down the ramp, and as he reached the clearing, his men behind, anxiously awaiting for the moment. Staking the flag over the grass, Captain Treblinski then said, not very inspired, but still, aware of the importance of such action, the Phase I of the Border Security Project, now hastened due to the fact that foreigners have just came to their vicinity:

"Today, we shall establish the city of New Suwalki from these untamed grounds, to watch carefully the presence of those whose presence might become a threat to our future and our survival, and now, our time is short, and thus ceremonies unnecessary," he looked at one of the lads and said, "bring this information to the fleet, and we can close our borders from hasty incursions while negotiations are occurring. We have to settle at least half of this world quickly, least they take it over with no guilt." handling a punch card to the boy, he then looked at the risen flag,

Quickly, the sailor headed inside the Granica 7, and quickly inserted the punch card in a slot that only one of the several telephones of the bridge had, a red colored phone unlike most. The card was shredded by something inside the phone while it began "dialing" automatically to its destination. Riskily, gaseous exotic matter began to be expelled from the rear of the light cruiser, as a radio transmission came towards the location of such gases near instantly, only to vanish, and reappear towards the recently arrived Kkc. Zwycięstwa close to the planet's orbit. The red phone ringed, as the Vice-Admiral quickly answered, and listened:

"This is an automated message, printing data." a punch card then was thrown by the phone, and he took it and moved to a table amidst the control room, where a decrypting machine stood.

"Today's code," he then remembered of a sequence of fifty numbers and letters without any aid, something that contrasted with the anachronistic nature of their vessel. Suddenly the machine began printing some orders, in a pace that was surprisingly slower than that of people using old typewriters inside the ship. As the information left, he immediately began to interpret it.

Multiple strategic points have been selected, but they could only establish eleven colonies, with the Heavy Cruiser packing enough infrastructure for building an early capital. Looking quickly at the printed geographical map of the planet, Jarek began to trace lines and think, aware that while he did such, their vessel prepared to dock with the massive juggernaut of those foreigners. Eventually, he traced a few lines over a region with natural boundaries: a river network crossing east to west, an icy mountain chain coming from north and slightly eastward to south and slightly westward which fed the river, the isthmus to its west, and the ocean to the north, and marked the exactly eleven identified strategic spots around such region. A potentially minerals-rich and extremely fertile pass next to the mountain chain basin to the east, which served as an important exit through the rest of the continent, fertile riverbeds, rainy hilltops, the beginnings of a large desert to the southeast formed by the blockade of winds coming from west to east by the mountain range that could perhaps harbor fossil fuels, forests and a deep south tip of a tropical jungle, among others. In the most central strategic spot, the Admiral quickly wrote "Nowy Gdansk", New Danzig, perhaps a fitting name for the situation they were into.

"Docking procedure in one minute!" the speakers announced as the admiral hurried to the red telephone and dialed, as he inserted the annotated map into a larger slot in it, and the map was promptly shredded by the phone. Meanwhile, a similar AS-jump happened to the radio waves as they immediately reached the landed saucer in the planet.

"Captain, we have orders to set temporary derivatives at these positions to accelerate the landing of the others." the sailor presented the map, at the same time dumb machines began unloading colonization supplies from massive crates."

"Stop unloading procedure." he said, as massive containers were then left in the landing site, and the machines and human crew returned to inside the vessel, which began to hover, emitting a peculiar hum, and thus it began accelerating and flying through the skies, in high altitude at hypersonic speed."

"Landing zone two to be reached in one minute. AS-generator ready for deployment." The strange vessel began unloading a gaseous material that dissolved into nothing, as a few moments afterwards, one of the light cruisers would emerge inside the planet's atmosphere, and immediately begin its landing to the designated zone. Perhaps they were way too much appreciative of the British Space Marines motto, whose entire doctrine originated from the Special Air Service: "He Who Dares Wins."

As such operation just began, Jarek anxiously awaited, two men armed with gauss carbines escorting him, hearing the docking clamps connecting to the bay he has been instructed to dock to. The Vice-Admiral carefully lifted a small pill from a hidden pocket, and placed it in a hollowed tooth inside his mouth. Hopefully, he would not have to damn his soul to Hell for the survival and freedom of his nation and his people.

"Ten, nine, eight, seven, six..."

"What audience will they provide?" he thought, before the counter finally ended.

"Three, two, one."

The massive Docking clamp doors then opened.

As Captain Shay stepped back onto the bridge four hours later, Admiral Esus surreptitiously finished forwarding the sensor readings on to his contact in Black Operations. Something was amiss here, and they needed to know about it.

Shay slumped into his command chair and sighed, cradling his forehead. "You know, you get a Tzoy going, and they'll really talk - well, think your head off, Admiral Esus."

"Which is odd, Captain," said Esus. "I hate resorting to stereotypes, but Tzoy are typically reserved and cautious with their... speech. They see excessive talk as a liability for their whole race."

"Well I heard enough to know that whatever it is... out there, it's bad news. Really bad news."

"You don't yet know the half of it, Captain," said Esus. "I have just finished readings of the planet. There is something extraordinary, phenomenal, and terrible on it... and INSIDE it."

Shay turned to face the dour digisape. "Inside the planet? How?"

"I don't know," said Esus. "It defies what we know of organic science. Something is writhing in the mantle of this world, however; something alive."

Shay visibly shuddered. "I think I might be in over my head," he remarked, staring now at the world as if it would erupt in front of him in moon-sized maggots.

"I agree, Captain. Which is why I've encouraged work details to finish repairs on our gate ahead of schedule, and why a Black Operations squadron is at this moment in transit."

"You what?" asked Shay, his voice stunned. "But I..."

"And I, sir, outrank you, Captain Shay," said Admiral Esus with finality. "The threat here is both too great for us to handle or analyze and too terrible to break publicly. This operation is now in their hands. We are to hold here, and wait for their arrival."

Shay was now visibly reddening. "I trusted you Esus," he said. "I can't believe you'd go behind my back like this."

"I have followed protocol for encounters with exotic macroparasites to the letter," said Esus. "Our is a military ship. It is equipped to deal with military threats. We have done that, but a threat remains, one still too powerful to comprehend, despite our efforts. We are not equipped to deal with something of this magnitude. Black Operations is. And they are arriving... now."

The gate's illusory watery expanse erupted, and out from its center streaked no less than ten dagger profiles - the specialized Inquisitor class destroyers of the Black Operations. No name or flag was branded on their dark gray hulls, just numbers, and they stabbed upward into the void. The graceful ships broke in formation, eventually coming to circle around the Eisenfaust like a group of sharks eying a beached whale.

They hailed, and Shay answered: "Vessels," he began, but was cut off by the voice of another:

"ANSS Anahstis, you are to immediately power down your weapons and proceed with us to Sector 1138 off New Constantinople for quarantine. We are attaching coordinates to this dispatch."

"Now hold on just one moment," demanded Captain Shay.

"Anahstis, you are ordered to comply, or we will open fire." At that moment, a warning shot from one of the circling ships passed over the arm containing the Anahstis's deep bridge. "Do you comply, Anahstis?"

Shay cursed, and slumped into his seat. "Nevermind I just wiped out an enemy fleet with a single vessel, come with us to quarantine," he mumbled.

"Anahstis?" the voice insisted.

"Anahstis complies," said Shay pointedly.

"Understand we are doing this for your own good, and the good of everyone you care for," said the voice, unemotionally. "The forwarded readings have indicated invasion by a psionic organism of planetary scale or higher. This is an unprecedented encounter, and each of your crewmen will have to be examined. It is possible that suggestions were implanted during the episode, that might compel you or your crew to take self-destructive action when encountering certain stimuli."

"So we're to be cut open and examined," said Shay scathingly.

"You and your crew will be examined; if necessary, treated; and once found to be guaranteed safe, released from quarantine. Do not attempt to launch shuttles or otherwise evacuate the ship; all fleeing craft will be fired upon. You will now proceed with an escort of five of our Inquisitors. The rest will hold here and try to further study this new lifeform. Captain Shay, as the one enlisted man to combat these creatures first hand, you will be kept fully apprised of our discoveries here, and invited to add any of your own insights you may have."

"How generous," he said grudgingly.

"We all serve our country," said the voice warningly. "In our own way. You have done your part; it is time for us to do our own. Stay well, Captain Shay. We will be in touch."

With that, the voice cut off the transmission. The Anahstis broke from the formation, and along with five of the other Inquisitors, slid into hyperspace; toward the vast Empty Quarter, the space around New Constantinople.

As the doors of the shuttle opened, the figure of Captain Godric was revealed to the Vice Admiral. Resplendent in his dress uniform, he puffed busily on a pipe, beaming at the sight of Symanski. Two kaleesh, each equipped with their own SIR-10 carbines, flanked the Captain.

"Vice Admiral Symanski I presume," said Captain Godric jovially. "A pleasure to finally meet face to face. I am Captain Oli Godric, and these two fine fellows," he said, motioning to the two kaleesh, "are part of the contingent of Izvoshra that we are exceptionally fortunate to host here aboard the Anikar. More skilled warriors one would be hard-pressed to find anywhere in our domains." The two kaleesh nodded, accepting the compliment with quiet, disciplined dignity. Catching the look of worry on Symanski's face, Godric started, and said, "Oh, I didn't mean it like that," he chuckled. "It is simply that to other humans, their presence has typically prompted requests at explanation. Now then, shall we proceed to the briefing room? I imagine you must have quite a few questions about us."

As the large docking bay door opened, Vice Admiral Jarek Symanski tried to hold himself tight as he spotted the two aliens escorting the human captain, and began to wonder whether such captain was a hostage or prisoner being forced to pretend otherwise. The captain, or perhaps prisoner of war, for Symanski was doubtful, then quickly addressed him, as he cautiously scanned his expression for signs of tension and fear, that could indicate he was a prisoner of such aliens. It was then that the captain greeted him. Symanski looked like a sea wolf, with a beard he decided to keep and a white uniform with red stripes, with the symbol of a red nail over a red crescent in his white armband. However, one little touch next to his face and it would become clear that his cap was the visible part of a seemingly invisible space helmet he wore. Looking straight to the captain and avoid any eye contact with the aliens, Jarek then listened:

"Vice Admiral Symanski I presume, a pleasure to finally meet face to face. I am Captain Oli Godric, and these two fine fellows, are part of the contingent of Izvoshra that we are exceptionally fortunate to host here aboard the Anikar. More skilled warriors one would be hard-pressed to find anywhere in our domains." it was then that the two aliens shyly nodded, as if they were, in a way he couldn't understand, domesticated, perhaps spoils of a planet these humans conquered, Symanski thought, as he couldn't just imagine such a relationship otherwise. Seemingly reacting to his suspicious stance, such captain Godric then argued, "Oh, I didn't mean it like that it is simply that to other humans, their presence has typically prompted requests at explanation. Now then, shall we proceed to the briefing room? I imagine you must have quite a few questions about us."

"Nice to meet you too, Captain, and certainly," Symanski spoke with a slight accent, "I have certain questions about your, exotic societal setup and about your reasonings, and perhaps, if you may, about what kind of threat would justify the massive resources that I presume that have been taken building something like this juggernaut. But perhaps," he then smiled in a gentlemanly manner, still ignoring the two aliens guarding the captain, "I would feel at ease to start such conversation with you in private, if it is possible. My guards will escort me until I reach the meeting room where we can talk, preferably somewhere with tea and other drinks." and hopefully he wouldn't have to make them their last.

It was still complicated to proceed, but necessary. Refusing to get to the end of such encounter would openly demonstrate their suspicion. However, while the Vice Admiral tried to at least not bother the two aliens, his two guards seemingly began to keep a far greater focus upon both than upon anything else, and exchanged suspicious, and sometimes openly hostile glares at the two beings. It was very likely they were up to no good, but for now, it was better to not bother, as apparently those beings were vassals to those humans. Unfortunately, for a bored guard, it was difficult to disguise a certain hatred for the Kaleesh, result of having no other form of contact with alien sentiences before than immediately hostile contacts, which nearly wiped mankind off Earth once. The Vice Admiral however was too busy talking with the captain when his men began exchanging hostile and suspicious glares with the Kaleesh.

"Sir," piped up one of the ensigns. "Passive sensors are picking up activity on the planet below."

"Really," said First Officer Hammond. "They've landed?"

"It would appear so sir; another vessel just jumped in atmosphere, too."

"Well then," said Hammond, leaning into his chair. He dialed a number into the comm pad on its arm.

"Yes?" a gruff voice spoke up.

"Commander Davion," said Hammond. "The other party in this system has commenced a landing on this planet. How soon can you get a contingent down there to sniff things out, see if they're mapping things - or digging in?"

"Sir, I can get a team assembled and a flag planted in ten minutes; fifteen tops," he said, a shuffling noise evident over the com; the commander was already springing into action.

"Good," said Hammond. "We're getting more details on their locations by the minute; we'll keep you constantly updated on scans. Generally, try and land where they're not; obviously more on the other half of the planet at the moment, and use your discretion."

"Aye sir," said Davion.

-=Outside the Briefing Room

As Shay and Symanski proceeded into the room, the two sets of guards took position in the hall outside. While both kaleesh wore the traditional bone masks of their culture; not taken, of course, from the mumuus which were now millions of lightyears away, but now rather from the manifold monsters which dwelt on Rhuckh. They concealed two faces - one much younger than the other, and two vastly different temperaments.

On the left stood Jer'nej, the younger, and on the right, Tama. Jer'nej spoke first, in his native tongue.

"What an embassy these new humans have sent! Your old eyes must see as well as mine, Tama, the looks of contempt these foreigners give us!"

"Calm yourself, Jer'nej," cautioned the elder. "What of these soldiers? What are they to us? We are Izvoshra, the greatest sons of Rhuckh. You would trouble yourself over the faces they make?"

"Their pink fleshy faces are not the issue," growled Jer'nej in reply. "They would be an embassy to our great empire yet glance at us askance, speaking only to the Anikari, scowling at us?"

"Just wait til they send the Tzoy ambassador," cackled Tama. "They'll beg for a kaleesh in their embassy then, what with those silly fish wheeling all over the place with their silly burblings."

-=In the Briefing Room

Captain Godric sat down and sighed, trying to look deeply into Symanski's eyes, and hesitantly began,

"Alright. We're here now, so let me get to brass tacks. Now, you speak English - which is a miracle in itself, but worth exploring later - but I don't know if you really understand me. Not on the definitional level, but on the comprehensive level, if you get my drift. I'll be blunt; sir, from the moment you stepped on this ship; from the moment I first laid eyes on you, you've been at condition red and haven't left it. Now, I can understand a certain level of sensible caution in first contact, but at a certain point you have to tear the wall down some, as it were."

Godric narrowed his eyes, and continued: "Now if I'd wanted you dead, Vice Admiral Symanski, you probably wouldn't have gotten halfway to this ship, much less in my briefing room. A salvo from one our C-MAC batteries while you flew here, a pop-out turret in the hall outside giving you a friendly greeting in plasma; the possibilities, up to this moment, are endless. You call this ship a juggernaught, and yes, if we were the war-mongering types, we would have attacked your fleet and laid down FTL inhibitors as soon as detected you; and not let one slip off to rouse the rest of your fleets."

"But we are not rapacious," said Godric, leaning back, his face softening. "And we strive not to be completely paranoid. In short, my people do believe in peaceful, prosperous coexistence. The question is, do you?"

When the Captain of the juggernaut began to speak hostilely, the Vice Admiral remained with his cold, calm expression as he listened to the empty threats and tried to not put everything in jeopardy. It was becoming clear, into Jarek reasoning about such way of speaking, that whenever they came from, they weren't used to attack new civilizations they met without a pretext, and thus he paranoia led him to believe such threatening manner was simply a trick to attempt luring him to give such pretext. He had other plans, however, and wasn't easily gullible, with enough experience talking with Nazis and Soviets who once wanted to carve the Polish Worlds, before they mysteriously disappeared and all contact was lost.

"Alright. We're here now, so let me get to brass tacks. Now, you speak English - which is a miracle in itself, but worth exploring later - but I don't know if you really understand me. He doesn't seem to get it, good. I better keep up Symanski thought as the Admiral spoke as if he was totally clueless to the fact such fleet could start trying to obliterate his as soon as possible.

"Now if I'd wanted you dead, Vice Admiral Symanski, you probably wouldn't have gotten halfway to this ship, much less in my briefing room. A salvo from one our C-MAC batteries while you flew here, a pop-out turret in the hall outside giving you a friendly greeting in plasma; the possibilities, up to this moment, are endless. You call this ship a juggernaught, and yes, if we were the war-mongering types, we would have attacked your fleet and laid down FTL inhibitors as soon as detected you; and not let one slip off to rouse the rest of your fleets."

Jarek, from inside, was dazzled from all the foreign terms he used in the threats, he had no idea of what plasma was other than something thinner than gas to which a military purpose was never found in the Polish Worlds, nor he had any idea of what was a C-MAC, or of what was a FTL inhibitor, except by deducting, or even of what FTL meant. It was becoming clear where the conversation was heading.

"But we are not rapacious, and we strive not to be completely paranoid. In short, my people do believe in peaceful, prosperous coexistence. The question is, do you?"

"Perhaps yes, unless we have no other choice than either war or subjugation," Jarek replied, as he touched his own forehead with his finger and placed it bluntly, demonstrating that if Godric's intention was to push him to do what he wanted through intimidation, it wouldn't work, "provided that all these mentions of the many ways you could have killed me and my lads aren't an indicative of your actual willingness of peaceful and prosperous coexistence, I'd definitively be willing to settle the matter down and come to an agreement." he then refused to drink his tea or to eat anything and said: "I know you do not wish to kill me, Captain Godric, I just lost my appetite, but thanks for the breakfast." he then reminded of one of the captain remarks, "Also, as a clarification, had that vessel of my fleet departed to bring in reinforcements, by now, they would have arrived already, but I don't think there is anything other than what you have already seen. We believe in peaceful coexistence without the need of demonstrating strength to those we just met, and besides, we just didn't come with tugboats because they are too inefficient for exploring and mapping space and because of the occasional marauders and pirates."

Godric stared at the rejected tea and stewed for a moment. It was a simple, but meaningful gesture, the refusal, and he wondered if he had not already botched things somewhat.

"I detect an implication," he began carefully. "That we are, as you put it, marauders and pirates. Such could not be farther from the truth, sir; my nation was forged in a death struggle with slavers - human slavers, even - who sought to force us into servitude with their advanced technology; technology that we outwitted and then claimed for our own, and remade in our own image, by long toil. All the same, we learned a hard lesson by that fight. Though we would wish otherwise, the stars belong to the strong. We have not forgotten it; we dare not."

"Enough of our past, though," said Godric with a deep breath. "Would you consent to tell me of your own? Your civilization's language - and your own accent - bear a striking resemblance to that of a Terran culture; that of Poland, which is remarkable, as Terra is, by my rough calculation, twenty-five thousand light years away."

Commander Osanne looked critically at the hellish world below him. He had just sent two of his ships down; a feinting maneuver, meant to test the organisms that "lived" on this planet. He shifted comfortably in his seat, suppressing slight feelings of claustrophobia; the bridge of an Inquisitor was less like a bridge and more like a cockpit; her crew were largely confined to their seats for the duration of the voyage, and there was standing room in the walkways only. It was crowded even by the standards of a man who lived on an asteroid for most of his career.

The two ships drew back up toward his group, and he opened a channel.

"Report, Benson," said the Commander.

"It's swarming, Commander. There are things on the ground, things in the air; it's like nothing I've ever seen before. We were attacked, even, just skimming the lower atmosphere. Didn't sustain any serious damage, but sweet Christ, it's like nothing I've ever seen before," was the obviously unnerved response of Benson.

Osanne set his jaw. Benson worked in Macroparasites A - it's where the ancient stolen Feazanthian Flood scion was held. Nothing fazed that bastard; nothing until now. The man was repeating himself, even.

"I got some readings," continued Benson. "Anahstis was right; this thing goes all the way down to the core of the damn planet. We need to do something."

"Do what, Benson?" asked Osanne dangerously.

"We got some gravity bombs in the holds on these things, and we can get some crackers in here if you don't want to go for the fireworks..."

"I'm not so sure that's a good idea," said Osanne cautiously.

"Sir," said Benson, "This thing is currently helpless. You want to give it breathing room to call in reinforcements or grow more ships or whatever the hell it does, and keep spreading?"

"There is still too much we don't know," said Osanne. "I agree, what we do know is fucked up, but if we go off half-cocked we could make the situation far, far worse. Now we know it's space-borne, likely even FTL. We also know that... whatever it is down there, is a relatively new establishment for them. There is no way in hell our long-range survey scans could have missed something like this when they were taken, so obviously it's coming from somewhere else. Could be another galaxy; could be the next star-system over. Wherever it is, it hasn't called for reinforcements... yet. Now, what do you think would happen if we blew up the planet? If something came inquiring after this thing, they'd come back to rubble, and they'd know bad shit went down here, and they'd go on the defensive. Even worse if we blew up the star; thats fireworks people'd see for lightyears away. Hindsight for macroparasite breakout does often suggest, I agree, that early and extremely liberal application of as much high-end explosive death is the best route, but it's still just hindsight, in the end. The way I see it, it's just two equally bad options; one, let it go for now and regain its strength; or two, blow it away and force any friends he might have around here to marshal their strength. Given the choice, I'd rather let him rebuild first in isolation, for now, and then start blowing shit away when there isn't any other option."

"And what about option C?" insisted Benson. "He rebuilds his strength while his friends marshal theirs?"

"Thats only plus one on option B," said Osanne. "Until we know where they're coming from, I want to take a chance on A."

The Vice Admiral wasn't unsure if the sudden change to a not-so-hostile manner of speaking was a ruse or simply an acknowledgment it was a misinterpretation of him regarding what Godric truly meant, just as he seemingly misinterpreted his mention of pirates and marauders, something that defied a certain logic: the fact they wouldn't build armed scouting and boundary exploration fleets if they hadn't previous contacts with groups not so willing to talk and negotiate. As the Captain asked him about his culture, Jarek wondered if he was trying to discover a potential secret through an indirect approach that could bring him to a disadvantage, while he considered carefully what was claimed, and that if such was the truth, they had something in common in their past. However, differently from what expected, the Vice Admiral would answer right away, as somehow, his thoughts were happening far quickly than what a normal human would be able to process, and despite that, he had no visible signs of any form of augmentation. In truth, his answer was immediate:

"Apologies, Captain Godric, for it seems my statement on pirates have been misinterpreted. I actually meant that, even if stars belong to the strong, we don't believe into the necessity of demonstrating such strength right away, and that we only use armed vessels because of previous contacts we had with hostile pirates and marauders in the fringes of our known space," Jarek then smiled, "and I am glad to know you have an interest on my people's culture. Just one moment, if you may," he politely asked, "is there a holographic projector anywhere connected to a combat simulator or wide-war simulator with enough information to simulate 'what ifs' involving all technologies of mankind history since the Early Industrial Age? Because if there is one, could you set up a scenario of what would be the probabilities of mankind surviving the invasion of an alien force with access to advanced hovering, as in flying saucers that defy conventional propulsion concepts, targeting and combat technology including lasers able to vaporize almost anything with one shot, but unable to take detours from relativity, in August of nineteen forty-four, during the Second World War, having its true start together with the historical Warsaw Uprising, against Earth? And then, if possible, set the probability of, if humanity survives and somehow defeats these invaders inside this simulation, Poland remaining as a sovereign and free nation?"

New Suwalki, 5 minutes after initial landing

The scenery was changing, although nature remained untouched, for the containers moved to the surface from the flying saucer shaped light cruiser remained unopened. In fact, very little, other than the containers, indicated any serious intention of establishing settlements inside the planet. No modular houses have been built yet, and the Polish Worlds flag still flied next to the nearly unscathed purity of the alien forest in one of its clearings.

Captain Treblinski observed the operation with a smile, extremely satisfied despite the fact that apparently, nothing else was being done since the containers were placed into the ground. He knew the drill in situations like this, and thus he carefully followed the procedures as defined by the Chapter 5 of the Codex of the New Paradigm, known as the Ascent. Standing in the center of the massive clearing, he observed as the containers formed a perfectly circular pattern around it, and remembered.

"We have never tried this before, and I doubt Symanski would agree, but it is the desire of Anna Komorowski, and she bears the banner of the New Paradigm. That damn woman, she refuses to tell us what is this about? Something strange, very strange," he then began to remember, "it was like if, that day, everybody reached another level of consciousness, and began to think better, faster, and without any of those implant things. But is there a price for this? Why would I do this? This seems illogical, almost mystical," he realized, "arranging containers in the same way that British Stonehenge in Earth was arranged, forming a half-moon with the shapes that can be traced among the future roads that will connect our eleven cities, what the hell is all this about?"

"Captain," a soldier then came to him, "here is the copper nail you have requested." he handled him the strange object, one of the artifacts the anonymous benefactors of the Polish Worlds supposedly gave to them, a nail with a hammerhead, of tarnished copper with a red color that no metal he ever seen before had. Then, Treblinski ordered:

"Dismissed, sailor!"

As the soldier moved far enough, the captain observed the position of the sun at the sky, until finally he sighed, and wondered:

"Why am I agreeing with this? Hell, if I did this in front of a priest I'd be excommunicated!"

Pulling a knife from his belt, he then carefully made a small cut in his left hand, wincing, and began to motion his bleeding hand through the grass, observing the droplets forming a larger shape, as he carefully moved his hand in a semi-circle, forming the shape of a crescent moon with his own blood. Quickly, he bandaged his hand, and grabbed the copper nail, and lowering it, he placed it in the middle of the crescent moon of blood, crossing its middle with the nail, and forming the known symbol of the New Paradigm. Then, while he stood right there, looking at the symbol, he waited. Thirty seconds later, he sighed to himself, thinking:

"Maybe Anna just made a fool of me. Hell, I'm sure she just asked me to do this so she could laugh of me wherever she hides."

"What the?" suddenly, a bright flash emanated from the symbol, emitting a crimson light which began to intensify, until exploding into a flash of red light, blinding the captain. As he recovered, he then looked at the place where the strange mark stood before and intrigued, wondered:

"Or maybe not! It's impossible for that to happen, or, damn, that nail just vanished with my blood! Those creepy men are not going to like the fact I just let one of their beloved artifacts just, vanish by itself. But wait, isn't something supposed to, just happen? Maybe this is a far fancier trick Anna is playing at me after all, but I'm not so gullible!

And yet, he maintained his observation, hoping something would come out of such bizarre rite, and thus, seven minutes have passed since they landed, with not yet any signs of any considerable effort into constructing anything in this new world, just as they have been instructed, arranging containers in strangely patterned manners for no obviously discernible purpose, and not unloading anything from inside them.

The Sathar super-organism knew nothing of words. To it communication was entirely invocative, “do this,” “feel this,” “be that.” Not words, but meaning. Meaning so densely packed, so precise and overpowering, that the message it conveyed was strangely (to the unaccustomed mind) both specific and unintelligible.

It resembled a sort of thoughtquake really; a thunderous ominous thing that shook and shattered as it expanded ever outward in the mind… echoing endlessly. For the magnitude of the creature’s desires were such that no small, single mind could process them; thus they spilled forth as a deluge.

If clarity were to be found it could only come through the skilled interpretation of more specialized beings. Sathar’s own servitors.



Conversely, Sathar found itself unable to seize hold of the whips of consciousness that issued forth from the vessels above. Were he to grasp one, even for a moment, he would eviscerate it entirely and examine its tattered remains. But it was not to be, their thoughts were structured, linguistic, with meanings a precious rarity amidst the jumble of terms and qualifications. Like gnats they eluded him. Only in their dreams could he approach…

But Sathar was no fool.

For all its pride and misplaced confidence, this being held insight into his adversary; though perhaps not wisdom enough to admit that so small of beings could qualify for such a title.

Indeed, he knew their ‘primitive’ natures, and guessed at their intent. They would now fear him, and that fear would drive them to destroy him, but for an instinctive caution that held them at bay.

They did not know, they could not, what his next move would be. Would he send yet another fleet, as before, to destroy them? Did he have some secret power yet to be unleashed?

He would make no move, provoke no reaction. Let them think him defeated… for now. In the end victory will belong to him alone.

Mighty Sathar could not conceive to bend knee for insufferable vermin such as these, they were beneath his contempt and would soon live only to serve him… if he, in his benevolence, deigned to grant them that much.

Sathar could not be thought impotent, could not ask for aid.

Pandæmonium would not suffer weakness in its ranks.

Salutations, Anikari friends;

It has come to the attention of Areia in all its glory that the Reconstituted Kingdom has engaged in a phase of expansion. We do not argue the right for the Anikari State to re-assume its rightful place, nor its need for expansion - we do however question the need for the overbearing use of its military to secure territory in the local clusters.

We are alarmed by the increase in both military standing and military readiness within the Anikari state - which continues to hold a number of unresolved border disputes partaining to individual states now subsumed by your reconstituted authority. In addition, Areia does not beleive the current amount of military forces still concerned with Areian-Anikari border security in particular are necessary or conducive to the normalisation of relations.

As such, we issue a formal protest on the grounds above to the overbearing use of military force at this current time. We do not beleive, as history has taught the Anikari in particular, that this use of military force and continued militant actions on the border will yeild anything less than bloodshed.

Both our nations were both born from a common event - the defeat of advanced outsiders, who in turn empowered our own civilizations to step into the void. It would be far from our minds to attack you - for reasons ethical as well as practical - but all the same, I should think that it would be unfair for you to demand we leave here with nothing to show for it, aside from the suspicions and enmity of another space-faring power. I propose this: that we both place claims upon this planet, and in time, come to settle it together."

Commander Davion looked across the alien landscape, commenting under his breath, "definitely ain't in Kansas anymore," then turned to the cooling hulk of the Cinder Block, and radioed Hammond.

"We're on the ground sir. Rolling out our survey vehicles now."

"Are you speaking ironically, Davion?" chuckled Hammond.

"No sir," said Davion. "Heaviest I have is a squad of Cougar mechs. That's scout tonnage."

"Well, stay frosty all the same, Commander. We've set you down approximately where they are not, but they could still have gotten almost anywhere by now. As well, just in case, I've uploaded some signs in Polish into your drop ship's local memory, along with some phrases. Make sure your teams' commanders have their own copy. Watch the pronunciation; it's a tricky language."

"Aye sir," said Davion. "Anything else?"

"Nothing. The captain is still in conference, and we haven't heard anything good or bad back from him yet."

"Well, let's hope no news is good news then," said Davion. "Davion out."

Hail, neighbors under the Areian aegis.

Leftover bad blood from the Repudiation of the Second Treaty of Unification implicit in Anandil's abandonment of the Carvinia Peace Conference notwithstanding, we are otherwise confused and perplexed at your statement of alarm and paranoia regarding our recent bout of expansion. It would make sense coming from fremdvolk, but your nation would have, I'd hope, deep understanding of our own, especially considering many of your people were alive when our nation took its first steps into deep space.

You are alarmed by the reconstruction of our military tradition; aghast at the fact we patrol space we are sovereign in; cite border disputes. What border disputes? Your sovereignty does not and never did extend anywhere in the Varanar-Rhuckh-Ikkaudl triangle. All of those territories declared their independence after Carvinia; all of those territories held on to that independence during the interim period between that and the present; all of those territories voluntarily came back under re-established Arizona Novanian aegis, itself founded on the bloodline of our first King, Anandil. Do not try and trap us in technicalities, as it will only be to your detriment, in terms of stable relations with our nation, especially that we now have the will and the way to resist baseless Areian aspersions on our sovereignty.

There is also little excuse for your ignorance of our traditions governing expansion. You know as well as I do that our military units have always spearheaded our initial territory scouting. This has been the case since the first "War" of this name. Anyone who does any less is the one in fact acting irresponsibly, if not immorally; by putting their civilians in grave danger, unsupported and unprotected in wild space.

You hope that our use of force will not result in bloodshed; whether you meant it or not, there is a threat implicit in this statement, one that I, my superiors, and my lord the king take very seriously. Let me speak plainly: Areian aggression in these matters will not be tolerated. It is our right and imperative to expand, as you have stated; whether we do so sending forth a single battleship or by the weak-willed, cowardly expulsion of unarmed, unhappy settlers is not your concern.

Pleasantries aside,

It is for reasons partaining to past knowledge and intimate first hand dealing with the Anikari and their affiliates that we show such concern for their actions. Is it not Arizona Nova who in their first tentative steps beyond their cluster were involved in a war with foreign powers, a war that could of easily been avoided had you not been questioned of your motives? We do not question your right to expand, we do question the method in which you seek to do so - as is our right as a state concerned for not just ourselves, but those who surround us.

It is my beleif you take great meaning from simple words, we are of course alarmed by a military buildup in a neighbouring state, which polity would not be? Aghast we are not. We, whether practical or not - still do not beleive our border has been correctly established following the resumption of centralised authority in Arizona Nova, how can you overlook such simple matters as possible habitable worlds on the border which must be addressed, or indeed, concerns either side may have over former joint possessions such as Kelwynd or Varanar, regardless of time that has passed or duty of care. The law is final in this regard - and as far as we are concerned there is no law, so how are we to act?

There is little point in this communique dealing with what you perceive to be threats or aspersions on your sovereignity, if this were the case, why would we deign as to treat you so by hoping to address our concerns frankly, only to be met with a response more qualified for someone you do not consider your "friend" as you sought to label us previously - but your so called fremdvolk?

It was our hope that our concerns - sent in good faith - could be addressed quickly and without vitriol. It is my personal hope this is still the case, regardless of Novanian beleif of interference or otherwise. There are numerous less militaristic ways to pursue expansionary goals, as we ourselves have demonstrated over the past years.

I will reiterate, we do not challenge your right to do what you do, only the manner in which you do it, as many nations have done amongst themselves in a civilized manner - and indeed, for many aeons. We see no reason why this should become such a radical notion to the Novanian state at this juncture. You reserve the right, as any state does, to ignore our concerns. We however beleive you do so at your own peril. We do not wish to see Arizona Nova embroiled in yet another unnecessary and bitter war for the cause of a few lifeless worlds.

We leave an open invitation for a diplomatic envoy to address this in a more convenient and expedient manner, either within Areian or Novanian territory at your discretion. As an addendum, we also wish to inform you of our intent to establish a new permanent embassy in Arizona Nova, with the act reciprocated if you wish.

I leave you, hopefully, with a better insight and cause for friendship.

Sameer cupped his right hand, slamming his left fist into it; a Rhuckhian gesture of triumph. In truth, his superiors had reacted in horror after seeing the message he sent, after he sent it, and indeed alerted the patrolling Eisenfausts that an international incident was pending. Yet his daring brinksmanship had achieved the desired end: the Arenumbergian dignitary was forced to name names where sovereignty was concerned, and move from a position of ambivalent superiority on to the defensive. Chalk one up for the scorching temperament of Rhuckhian Anikari.

I apologize if you mistake my candor for vitriol. I take it as a point of professional pride not to mince words, and make it clear, for the benefit of whoever is receiving my messages, what my meaning is.

If we are the friends you claim us to be, by the terms of our earlier relationships, not even taking into consideration the ties that bind us through the ESUS, then military buildup on our part should be no concern of yours; on the contrary, it should be celebrated, as our renewed strength means that you have a strong ally guarding your flanks.

Your questioning of our methods for colonization remains outrageous and irrelevant, however. Your people have their methods, and we have ours. If yours work, and do not involve directly or indirectly the threat of military force, it is by sheer luck. As it stands now, Varanar abides happily and gloriously under the rule of its Grand Duchy; indeed Grand Duchess Mirella Altraia has married our king, herself, and Grand Duke Belshazzar Verdegris was the first to endorse Kemelzar as rightful king of Arizona Nova. To rattle swords over that matter would be incalculably petty, and if not result in the immense displeasure of our king, then the wrath of the Grand Dukes, and the billions of Anikari who call Varanar their home, under the Arizona Novanian flag, God be praised!

You are granted permission to establish an embassy upon the world of Ondataru, as its green and healthily arboreal state would undoubtedly be more pleasing to you than the pressurized hallways of Joyous Gard or the scorch of Rhuckh's vast deserts, but bear in mind that this will be a temporary embassy only. Once our navy completes its mission, Anikar willing, we shall establish anywhere from four to six new urban centers on our western fringe, one of which I am sure the king will pick as a new capital. Unlike New Constantinople or Arizona Nove in their prime, strict controls will be put in place to maintain its population at sustainable levels for minimal overall impact, both to preserve the planet's ecology and reduce casualties in case of attack. We have no doubt you will appreciate this progressive new outlook.

Greetings, Pius Sameer, The Foreign Minister has now assigned the handling of this diplomatic thoroughfare to me, and as such I offer you this customary, minor, introduction.

On Behalf of Areia your apology is accepted, although we still find a case for continued subtle cases of a condascending demeanour being protrayed through your responses - I beleive you sir, as a diplomat - indeed, as one Anikari to another, should behave in a manner more appropriate to ones position. Please do not take this as simple words may appear, but nothing more than friendly advice.

First addressing your case of military buildup. We have made no official stance in regards to personal feelings and only to matters of security with a state we know not the intentions of. Regardless of affiliation through ESUS, which, I may remind you - is a notably non binding trade alliance. I will also reference past cases such as the ESUS civil war, where former friends outside of the organisation were all too eager to destroy one another in the name of ideology or territory. We merely wish to have these concerns addressed in a more.. pleasant manner.. than.. idle posturing from the Novanian diplomatic corps as to how "beneficial" it <can> be to how beneficial it <will> be.

In terms of Areian issues concerning MILITANT expansion, please understand this case properly. We do not beleive you should send colony fleets with no escort into the deep wild, we do however beleive scouting thoroughly, sending small colonial assets with appropriate escort etc is a preferable method - of far less aggressive a manner - in these cases. As we have referenced previously, sending large armed vessels in order to secure territory one knows little about results in the kind of issues a state once known as Arizona Nova experienced in this very similar situation. We argue not for death of innocents, but simply for restraint and forethought. If the Anikari and their affiliate species find our concern for their safety and lives "outrageous and irrelevant" we dread to wonder how you would act under different circumstances where lives were truely at stake.

In all due respect, as the foreign minister attempted to convey earlier - the law is final. In Areia, there has been no demarkation of the border, there has been no official treatise regarding the status of these worlds. There is no formal agreement concerning colonisation of worlds in the border zone. There are no treatise governing border transit, there are no treatise relating to border security. Whilst it would be simple enough to take your simple words as fact - the case is we cannot. We have now, repeatedly asked for clarification on this subject and you refuse to respond in kind, merely under some guise of "fair trade" in respect to only a portion of what was refered to. Regardless of Arizona Novanian outlook in this regard, we are a sovereign state ourselves and require such action. We are at a loss as to understand why you cannot grasp this. This is a simple case of the rule of law, we cannot continue to operate with the resumed polity neighbouring us when we there is no law governing where that nationstate begins, can we? If you, once again, fail to grasp this concept we are trying to address either here or through diplomatic conference it will not bode well for continued relations.

In terms of the rather.. undiplomatic manner you accepted our request for an Embassy, we were, of course, in the hope something fruitful in terms of our other concerns may of been yielded by now, as it has not - we must request a stay on the issue of an Embassy untill these issues are resolved. Pending the resolution of our issues we will gladly accept the locale requested, and indeed, respond in kind with your own facility.

I greet you warmly, Sister in Anikar. I am however hurt by your careless aspersions on my qualities as a professional. I would not be in this position if I was not immensely successful in the fine art of negotiations, or did not have the king's trust and confidence. I speak as he would, with all the strength, honesty, and power our grand heritage carries. I also speak out of some wrath and schadenfreude - you are surely as aware of the recent debacle in the ESUS Senate as I am, and the very physical and profance disgracing of our Diplomatic Corps at the hands of the Allaneans? Perhaps it would have turned out differently had I been there, or more convenient for you if the apparent weakling we'd dispatched to the ESUS had been here to assuage you with honey-dripping words. Fate is never so convenient.

The war you furnish as an example of "disastrous" aggressive expansion was anything but. It resulted in two peace treaties, an alliance with the Otagians, and one war, which was a hard-won victory over the Tsurani aggressors; a war which began because we made the mistake of sending out weak scouting parties <first>, and then the battleships. In terms of the ESUS, you cite exceptions, and not rules.

I would have thought our intentions were clear - defend the Arizona Novanian polity, and expand its aegis into unoccupied space. What has your nation ever had to fear from that? But I take it you want a formal agreement made to guarantee our passivity toward you, and to set down in writing our current borders. So be it. Varanar would be an ideal place to hold such a conference, would it not? Name the time, and we shall come together there to hammer out your peace.

Godric blinked as the Vice Admiral finished his speech. He coughed, and said, "Why yes, of course. You've illustrated it well enough, though, I shouldn't want for a simulator, my good man."

"The fact remains, though," continued Captain Godric, "We have both arrived at this planet at the same time, presumably with the same intent - to map it out, and determine its suitability for colonization. Both our nations were both born from a common event - the defeat of advanced outsiders, who in turn empowered our own civilizations to step into the void. It would be far from our minds to attack you - for reasons ethical as well as practical - but all the same, I should think that it would be unfair for you to demand we leave here with nothing to show for it, aside from the suspicions and enmity of another space-faring power. I propose this: that we both place claims upon this planet, and in time, come to settle it together."


As Captain Godric suggested for them to simply let the planet be mutually settled, which was, in truth, a still dangerous, even if not as dangerous as letting these foreigners assume complete control of this system. Nobody would send such a massive juggernaut if one was looking for colonization rather than sheer conquest, and Jarek suspected they could be bidding their time to deploy further strategic efforts for securing the system. However, it was unwise to openly demonstrated his distrust of the captain, as he couldn't allow him to have any hint of the threat their presence represented to the sovereignty of the New Paradigm.

Instead, he simply nodded as he listened to the offer, also aware that sooner or later they'd discover they were not waiting to establish themselves into the planet. Carefully considering the situation, and specially considering the unlikelihood of violence being a wise approach, the Vice Admiral, Symanski, knew that were it under other circumstances, he would politely ask for them to leave, and set up a permanent high-priority fleet onto such critical boundary system. He instead knew that the best he played dumb and hid the most vital, the safer it would end.

"An interesting proposal," Jarek replied, and began to look very straightly at Godric eyes, "and perhaps, a bit undefined," he coughed then, perhaps as a reaction of his body or as if meaning something, as it was uncertain, "specially as this is matter we know bitterly of," he grimaced, although not explicitly mentioning to what he was referring yet, "how tricky agreements regarding the partition of territory can end," he then tilted his head, "however, I'll have your word now, and hope this will not end like the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact." he offered his hand to Godric.

New Suwalki, 7 minutes after initial landing

Captain Treblinski sighed, as he was incredibly annoyed with what Anna Komorowski asked him, and specially about how it led to nothing. Looking at the blue alien skies, he carefully sat next to a tree, as bored for the fact they were relieved of any further orders for now, he began to simply relax, hoping to forget the fact there was a monster up there that could obliterate them at any things if all went bad. The blue foliages made the exotic scenery truly comforting in a way, and time began to pass, while sailors played card games in their wait for further orders, and the minutes went on. However, when he began to relax, he then suddenly noticed something about the horizon: the distant sight of mountains to the east to the east has changed: the mountains seemed significantly taller than before, and then, he quickly began to wonder what was happening.

Getting up, he began to walk around the clearing in the forest, and began to dwell deeper into it, without any escort, as he stubbornly decided to check things alone. He walked for two minutes, and then, he gasped at the sight:

"Unbelievable" the captain thought as he noticed a concave, gentle hill formation that seemed to slowly build up and ascend, a formation that surrounded the entire area of the planned city of New Suwalki. Carefully observing it however he eventually realized that it were not the hills that were growing up, it was the very ground he stepped upon that was slowly going down, as if the subsoil rocks and dirt were simply "vanishing".

He began to ran back to the clearing to warn the others, his balance slightly affected by the steady, artificial downfall of the terrain, that was seemingly becoming a massive valley amidst an artificially built circle of hills. However, when he trudged through the last lines of trees besides the far outskirts of the base, he once again was shocked, amazed by the sight of the impossible. An entire central arcology which design was inspired in the prewar and art déco architecture, with enough buildings and sufficient nuclear power to house and supply hundreds of thousands, was being unearthed by the descending ground, while the torsos of two Mark IX Tripods seemingly stood among the things being unearthed. As he watched the ground ceding to the structure, he became even more amazed as it seemed to be at an end.

"Impossible!" he loudly said as he watched a strange metallic and stone structure being unearthed, with a gate-like architectural structure that reminded ironically the Brandenburg Gate, and heavy cables hanging from it. The Light Cruiser's resident scientist observed the construct even more amazed. The Captain approached the scientist, making his way among many amazed crew members observing everything around them, and he promptly touched the scientist shoulder to draw his attention.

"Do you have any idea of how did this happen?"

"Komorowski, Captain," the scientist replied, "she was right here a few moments before it begun, but I don't know how exactly this occurred. I have a supposition though, about how this came to existence."

"Perhaps she was not joking with me, but what is your supposition?" Treblinski replied, as he observed the gate, "and her sense of irony didn't change. Don't tell me the seat of government looks like the Reichstag," he shrugged.

"How did you guess? Yes, I suppose it was a bit overt, but anyway captain," he began, "I believe that somehow, something managed to assemble materials into a pace that is scientifically implausible to build these facilities in minutes, all beneath our feet, and somehow, without breaking the integrity of the soil to the point we would fall."

"Clever," suddenly, Anna mysteriously emerged from the Brandenburg Gate copy, but she didn't arrive to the other side, "the benefactors of our cause have been indeed generous regarding my proposal," she half-smiled with the organic part of her face, "and now we stand a chance of not being shoved from our most important effort ever made. But thank the Vice Admiral as well, for I doubt they would be willing to help us if he behaved like a stupid thug."

"Impossible!" the scientist shouted, "there is no way an AS anomaly could be kept this close to surface and allow anyone to get through it!"

"According to Albert Einstein, AS anomalies were impossible too," Anna smirked, "but see, we have achieved everything because of those who see a future in our civilization's struggle. Otherwise, we would have perished a long time ago. Now if you could step aside, I have already contacted our friends, and in a few minutes a survey team shall arrive. Tomorrow the first fifty thousand volunteers for colonizing this planet shall come and next week the defenses shall be fully operational."

"Who are these benefactors?" the Captain insisted, intrigued by the strange happenings all around, "are they even human?"

"I neither confirm nor deny any of yours questions," Anna smiled, as she leaned to him and whispered, "but you better watch your back. Even our benefactors can't truly know everything, but they had hints of a potential treason in this world, and I am not speaking about those foreigners called Arizonians."

Nodding, the captain in truth was sick of the intrigue that Anna always tended to bring, although he knew that whenever she claimed a traitor was nearby, she rarely missed such claim. And thus, he began to wonder what to do next. When sort of portal resembling the Brandenburg Gate has been established in a new planet, in a city which seat of government is almost a carbon copy of the Reichstag, having certainty of what to do was difficult. Meanwhile, the two Tripods finally arose, standing at their majestic nine meters of maximum height as they began to scan the surrounding regions to such strategically critical point that separated the two largest continents of the planet.

They would know. But there was little to do. Waiting was synonymous of doom, for historically, every time Poland stood passive and on the defensive, all they achieved was defeat. It was necessary to begin actively the effort to secure their future. To secure the critical border world to Krakow, whatever it costs.

All it took was a blink of the captain's eyes for Anna to disappear again. Something else was going on, something that forces preferred to be maintained in secrecy. Whatever it was, in many ways, it was difficult to completely trust these unknown entities as benefactors of the New Paradigm.

It was a surprising occurance just how much, in the world of diplomacy, one wished they could add a name to a list of undesirables and be done with it. Unfortunately, it was rarely the case anywhere, let alone diplomacy.

Regardless of personal or professional views in this case, I beleive we have acheived a form of critical mass and that you have finally decided to address our concerns. Heretofore we now expedite our acceptance of the embassy graciously offered previously, and will provide one in return to be decided at the aforementioned diplomatic meeting you have so wisely deigned to grant us.

A delegation will be dispatched at your earliest convenience. It is my personal wish it meets more success than your earlier exchanges with the Foreign Minister. Truely, I thank you for making my job that much more interesting.

Assuming the last two Eisenfausts made it to their locations and found conditions optimal for colonization. Anyone wishing to join here on out should do so through diplomatic reaction.

Godric nodded, not breaking Symanski's gaze, and returned Symanski's handshake firmly; or at least what he imagined to be firm, that is.

"Ah, but Molotov-Ribbentrop was but the partitioning of Poland between two powers hostile to her, no?" asked Godric with a wink. "There is no such historical enmity here, nor the desire to carve up domains rightfully yours. I do understand your concern where surface boundaries are concerned, though. I am sure that once our respective survey teams get back to us with some concrete maps, then we can iron out those details to our hearts' content.

"Localize," said Hammond calmly. "Is it with ours?"

"No sir..." said the ensign. "It's near the approximated landing zones of the unknowns."

"That's peculiar..." said Hammond. "Radio our men on the ground."

"Commander Davion," started Hammond. "How are things down there?"

"Situation normal," returned Commander Davion. "Something I should know?"

"We're just detecting low-level seismic activity near the apparent Polish landing zones. You haven't seen anything?"

"Not here. Cougars haven't gotten any more than a few miles out; they haven't reported anything out of the ordinary either."

"Well keep me posted," said Hammond.

-=Varanar, Several Days Later...

It was with little fanfare that the cruiser Aneth'Dayuine coalesced its sleek, silver form into existence relatively close - in terms of galactic measurements - to the planet Varanar. It was of course, expected. On board was the delegation promised to arrive at the Novanian's earliest convenience, and so it was that they arrived precisely on time.

As the diplomatic party itself would be taking a shuttle down to the surface, for security reasons, the commander of the Aneth'Dayuine sent a simple, curt message on general frequencies towards traffic control.

"This is the A.U.V Aneth'Dayuine with the expected diplomatic delegation on board, intending to attend the impending summit. Requesting priority clearance for the shuttle Cur'Dwen to dock at the provided co-ordinates attached.

With the assent assumed, the small shuttle shot out from the underbelly of the Cruiser and delved planetward, its elegant but functional form cutting like an eagle in flight through the atmosphere of Varanar itself. It was with expedience that it soon came to settle its form upon the planets surface at a small spaceport close to the requested conference hall, or, so they had been told.

The Delegation sent was of no great number, simply two diplomats and a small entourage of aides - firstly, the tall of stature Adelia Ostermann, an Areian Anikari. She wore what were obviously state dress robes - as befitted the occassion, though visibly tailored and suited to a non-elf. She soon found her first battle of the day disembarking, though it was her brown hair being tassled by the wind which seemingly gusted about the area - no doubt from the shuttles still terminating engines.

Secondly, Andar Hylvestin, a typical elven individual that would not surprise any Novanian disembarked - again, wearing dress robes as befitted the occassion. It was a male elf, with the characteristic blonde hair, youthful visage and piercing blue eyes - a somewhat new characteristic that had developed since the lapse of the former green hue that had dominated in former Areian bloodlines.

They were soon followed by the aforementioned, expected aides, though some seemed to be somewhat out of place - no doubt "concealed" security. It mattered not, afterall, didn't everyone do that kind of thing?

The group made care not to come into contact with the shuttle as they gathered close - lest they be burnt in a altogether unpleasant manner. When all was in order, they walked towards their destination, no doubt likely to be greeted at the exit of the starport by their Novanian doubles.

As they walked down the grand boulevard to the Hall of Dukes, a massive neo-classical temple at the heart of Varanar's administrative district, tourists lined up to take pictures, supervised by heavily armed and armored MP. Even so, some of the humans assembled were cheering, and very few unfriendly faces were in that crowd. One of them, however, was not entirely a tourist.

Dressed in a genuine export Terran Hawaiian t-shirt and aviator sunglasses, Hiram Koppel, electronic cigarrette hanging out of one side of his mouth, watched intently as the elves wended their way down the lane. Catching the eye of one of the "aides" at the edge of the parade, he winked, flashed a peace sign, and then brought a bulky camera to bear, and took a picture of the group. In truth, this camera was actually a camera; its flash bulb was, however, a medical scanner, which packed into what appeared to be for all intents and purposes a bright flash a biometric scan. Satisfied with the intel gathered, Hiram melted back into the crowd.

Soon the group came to the massive arms of the Halls, and out from the central building that sat between the two arms, came the Arizona Novanian delegation.

First, came the Diplomat General himself - Ernst Bauscher. His slender frame and placid countenance contrasted wildly with the figure who stalked in his wake - Pius Sameer. Bald, tall, broad of frame and well-muscled, he still came limping after Ernst; clutching to his right side a crutch, which he had ever used since a skirmish had maimed his right leg, making it impossible to walk on. Along with Pius, wheeled a tzoy in a mobile tank, designated Puun, and a kaleesh, Ras'takal, the group in its entirety representing all Arizona Nova. Ernst was dressed in the more elven-influenced dress robes of his corps, while Pius was dressed in khakis and a martial leather tunic. The tzoy's tank was done up in Arizona Novanian colors for the occasion, and the kaleesh also wore the dress robes of the Diplomatic Corps, though with nods to his Rhuckhian heritage thrown in - a desert cap hooding his head, along with a well-worn, thick woolen cape.

"Ancient allies!" Ernst began, holding his arms wide, "Elves of Areia, welcome here. It is my sincerest hope," he said, his eyes seeming to flicker involuntarily back at Pius, "That we may address the issues which you have raised to my people satisfactorily."

Pius himself said nothing, only lazily looking at each of the elven delegation in turn, studying their faces and clothing.

"If you would come with us," continued Ernst, "We can draw inside of the Halls here, and begin our deliberations."

Adelia, for the most part, drew back at this juncture to defer to Andar, this was, afterall, the first time officially that an Areian had returned to this world - and she didnt particularly want to take the centre stage from who it was all about.

Andar nodded curtly to Adelia as she slipped into the entourage, she would have her time later. He turned his attention back to the combined Novanian Delegation.

"A thousand greetings and thanks would not be enough to convey Areia's pleasure to be engaged with the state of Arizona Nova once again, indeed, I have no doubt that all issues will be solved to both of our groups satisfaction. I feel that this issue may of grown a little larger than need be, but, politics and diplomacy are fickle in equal measure."

Andar produced a small box seemingly from nowhere and presented it to the Diplomat General.

"It contains several emblems set in traditional jewelry pieces, They are for all present and your respective heads of state and government. They, I'm told, grant the bearer a number of properties from good health to good fashion sense, as it were according to folklore - I beleive a number were specifically protected against water damage." Andar finished, smiling at the Tzoy delegate present.

"We are ready to begin at your behest, Mr Bauscher."

Bauscher inclined his head, accepting the box. "On behalf of my country, I accept your gracious gift," said Ernst. He offered the box to Pius with a warning glance, and turned back to the Areian party; Pius took the box, but eyed it suspiciously; not like one would eye a bomb, but like one would eye a small animal liable to bit you. Bauscher continued, "Now let us extend our own gift to you."

Motioning his party aside, floating forth from one of the main entrances in one of the arms came two trees; rooted in two elaborately decorated pots, which glittered in the sunlight, reflecting gems and intricate goldwork, which themselves stood on two repulsorlift trolleys.

"Our gift to you are these two young rementar saplings, of a line of trees that was first planted on Rhuckh's Greenward by the last of our people to land there after the civil war. Theirs is a hardy breed of tree; able to survive the desert scorch of the day and the coolness of the night, deluges and downpours in their time as well. It should be able to take hold anywhere our own genus can live without automated assistance."

A couple of the Areian aides split off to take the trees back to their ship, while the rest of the party proceeded into the hall where the treaty would be discussed, and hopefully, signed.

Verdegris Hall, as this part of the building was called, was the oldest part of the building, built by one of the first Grand Dukes, Zlatan Verdegris. It was a simply rectangular layout, but combined a vaulted gothic ceiling with stories delineated in classical style. The murals painted on its ceiling, scenes from the history of Arizona Nova. It was the crown jewel of Varanar, and one of the first sites to be designated a historical and cultural treasure by the king. The two parties took their seats at the long table dominating the center of the hall.

"The issues at hand today," began Bauscher, "Are threefold. One, the formal establishment of a border between the polities of Arizona Nova and Areia. Two, the formal establishment of mutual embassies. Three, the establishment of a treaty of non-aggression between our two nations. Unless anyone here has any addenda they wish to add, we shall begin."

Andar nodded as Bauscher presented the points of order for the meeting, nothing odd at all about any of what was to be discussed, of course. Andar began to speak.

"I foresee no major obstacles in the order of our discussion, nor their contents, Diplomat General, It is my personal opinion that on the matter of the border, there is little that will need to be discussed as, quite clearly, we already have our own spheres of influence - I do beleive a major point of contention, at least amongst the council itself is in which polity a certain number of systems will fall into. Given technological advances over the years, systems previously considered unsuitable are infact quite the opposite."

Andar nodded at Adelia who placed a small data slate on the table within reach of the Novanian Delegation, it of course, detailed the location of the systems in question.

"Nevertheless, we can of course, discuss this matter in greater depth when we are aware of your own concerns, I am of course open to leaving that matter to the end of the discussion." He finished.

Godric nodded, not breaking Symanski's gaze, and returned Symanski's handshake firmly; or at least what he imagined to be firm, that is.

"Ah, but Molotov-Ribbentrop was but the partitioning of Poland between two powers hostile to her, no?" asked Godric with a wink. "There is no such historical enmity here, nor the desire to carve up domains rightfully yours. I do understand your concern where surface boundaries are concerned, though. I am sure that once our respective survey teams get back to us with some concrete maps, then we can iron out those details to our hearts' content.


Nodding, Jarek returned the handshake, wondering how things were going on surface, meanwhile, and replied back, with a gallant smile:

"We are very proactive, Captain, and thus, I believe neither of us have any need to wait further. my personell likely have a map of the planet right now, all it is necessary is for you to broadcast a code," quickly, he took an old pen, something very anachronistic, and a piece of paper where he annotated the number, 1098-227, and finished, "transmit this code to the planet's equator, and the map of the planet will be immediately available."

Hopefully, he would trust them. Otherwise, negotiations could soon turn tricky.

New Suwalki, 12 minutes after initial landing

In the newly constructed city, the still amazed members of the light cruiser crew were further surprised, and alerted, as red lights began to blink across the city, a silent alarm of sorts, and immediately, the two towering tripods began to head towards its western outskirts, their silhouette still hidden by the hilly terrain surrounding the city.

Captain Treblinski remained calm, aware that it was probably nothing, and observed the unfolding of the events through the place. The strange gate remained, for now, completely inactive, probably a good idea as thus, its nature wouldn't be discovered, and it would stand as nothing but a monument, albeit an extremely ironic one, for those they made contact with. The claims of the existence of a traitor didn't put fear in him, but instead made him for careful on whom to speak with regarding certain matters.

Little he knew of the moment the two tripods would cross the hill hiding the city, and finally make contact with the scouting team of Arizona Nova, and thus they'd remain right next to their path, as if holding it to not allow them to go further.

Vice Admiral Symanski slid the sheet of paper over to Godric, and the latter, extending his hand, picked it up and scrutinized it, his eyebrows momentarily furrowing, then set it down and rang the outside.

"Commander Jer'nej," said Godric. "Come in a moment please."

The kaleesh strode into the room, eyes intently peering at the captain and occasionally flickering distrustfully at Symanski as he came in.

"Commander," said the captain, "Please take this slip to the deep bridge, and instruct First Officer Hammond to transmit this code to the planet's equator."

The kaleesh also peered incredulously at the paper for a moment, prompting Godric to continue, "This is important, commander. It's necessary to get our new friends here to help transmit their survey information to us."

"Yes, Captain," said the kaleesh, in a deep and gravelly voice. "I do not balk at errands. I shall go at once."

With a salute, he swept back out, still staring at the paper.

"Well," said Godric, turning back to Symanski. "Are you still not up to having a cup of tea?"

-=The Deep Bridge

Jer'nej stepped onto the deep bridge, prompting First Officer Hammond to turn around and start for a moment.

"Commander," he said, "I thought you were with the Captain?"

"I was instructed," said the kaleesh, "To deliver this to you," said Jer'nej, handing the sheet off to Hammond. "It is a code of some sort that the captain received from the Vice Admiral Symanski. We are to transmit it to the planet's equator, in order to facilitate exchange of our survey data."

"Really?" asked Hammond, one eyebrow cocked up quizzically. "Just like that? Do we know what it signifies?"

The kaleesh shrugged. "I personally do not trust the new humans. They speak over and through me, but this may be my own bias speaking."

"Well," said Hammond, frowning, as he looked at the sheet. "The good captain obviously intends to do it. If I had to guess, he's nesting symbolic implications throughout all this - reciprocating receiving this code through... quaint methods, by having it delivered by hand, as opposed to simply calling the bridge up with it, and then dispatching one of his bodyguard to do so. Hopefully, that will get through to them."

"Well, I should wish to get back there then," said Jer'nej, with some concern.

"All the same, I'm going to be active-scanning the equator after I send this," said Hammond. "No sense in staying in the dark after taking a stab in it."

"A wise decision, First Officer," said Jer'nej. With a salute, he exitted the bridge.

-=The Surface

Brenton Yakov sat tensely within the control harness of his ride - a Cougar battlemech, a 35-ton scout walker. The ancient design had been passed down from generation to generation from time immemorial, since around the time of the Slaver War, its exact origin lost in the mysts of time. While ships had come and gone, this model had operated at the speartip of ground forces for as long as could be remembered; though to be sure, the Cavalry had never been a creature of legend, small in the shadow of the much larger navy. Nonetheless, the seemingly inferior position of his service still managed to spark a disproportionately larger pride, as well as reverence for the traditional mech designs as they had been passed down.

His sensors began to ping an object at long range, prompting the mech's hud to flash an overlay of the sweep onto his hud, giving Brenton the probable position of the incoming contact; currently hidden behind a range of hills directly ahead of him.

He thumbed the power on the PPCs as a precaution, and radioed in to base, "Base Alpha, this is Brenton. Just picked up a contact, moving in to investigate."

As he rounded one side of the hill he brought the mech to a stop as the nature of the contact revealed itself to him. Immediately visible in his HUD was but the three striding legs, and soon he began craning the cockpit of the mech up to take in the whole.

"Holy shit," he said. "Base Alpha, made visual contact with the bogey. It's some kind of tripod; tall sumbitch, probably taller than a Blood Asp, but damn if it ain't spindly. Relaying feed to you."

Though not easing off the power to his guns, he relaxed the arms of his mech, letting them swing back down, to signify non-aggression. He did not know if the tripods had even caught sight of him yet, and wondered what their next move would be.
