Introduction:

The Royal Dominion of Southron is a nation living on the frontier. It can be an odd contradiction, possessing a feudal system of nobles who work hand-in-hand with the yeomanry to enrich and defend the Dominion. The Dominion has ever been wary of foreigners and foreign entaglements, mostly due to past conflicts. It sees itself as a bastion of sovereignty and honour, neither seeking nor taking from other nations. A system of nobility, even among the indig population, binds the people together. Modern ideals such as communism and extreme liberalism are seen as self-destructive, while fascism and total capitalism excessive.

OOC: Please note, this factbook supersedes any previous writing where there may be conflicts.

The History of the Dominion

Pre-Colonial History (Unknown to 1652)
Proto-Shona speaking societies first emerged in the middle Limpopo valley in the 9th century before moving on to the Southron highlands. The Southron plateau eventually became the center of subsequent Shona states, beginning in ca. the 10th century. Around the early 10th century, trade developed with merchants on the coast, helping to develop the Kingdom of Mapungubwe in the 11th century. This was the precursor to the more impressive Shona civilizations that would dominate the region during the 13th to 15th centuries, evidenced by ruins at Great Zimbabwe, near Masvingo, and other smaller sites. The main archaeological site is a unique dry stone architecture.

The Kingdom of Mapungubwe was the first in a series of sophisticated trade states developed in Southron by the time of the first Blackledge explorers. They traded in gold, ivory and copper for cloth and glass.

From about 1300 until 1600, Mapungubwe was eclipsed by the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. This Shona state further refined and expanded upon Mapungubwe's stone architecture, which survives to this day at the ruins of the kingdom's capital of Great Zimbabwe. From c. 1450–1760, Zimbabwe gave way to the Kingdom of Mutapa. This Shona state ruled much of the area that is known as central Southron today. It is known by many names including the Mutapa Empire, also known as Mwene Mutapa or Monomotapa as well as "Munhumutapa," and was renowned for its gold trade routes.

As a direct response to the foreign presence on the coast, a new Shona state emerged called the Rozvi Empire. Relying on centuries of military, political and religious development, the Rozvi (which means "destroyers") attempted to remove foreign merchants by force of arms. The Rozvi continued the stone building traditions of the Zimbabwe and Mapungubwe kingdoms while developing a professional army to protect its trade routes and conquests.

Around 1621, the Zulu general Mzilikazi (meaning The Great Road) of the Khumalo clan set up his own tribe, the Ndebele. The tribe fought its way northwards into the Transvaal leaving a trail of destruction in its wake and beginning an era of widespread killings and devastation known as the Mfecane. Local peoples attacked the Ndebele and drove the tribe even further northward. In 1637–38, the Rozvi Empire along with other Shona states were conquered by the Ndebele and forced to pay tribute and concentrate in the northeast of present-day Southron.

After losing the Transvaal in 1640, Mzilikazi and his tribe settled the southwest of present-day Southron in what became known as Matabeleland and established Bulawayo as their capital. Mzilikazi then organized his followers into a military system with regimental kraals.

Colonial History (1652 to 1800)

In 1652 the Pioneer Fleet arrived from the Mother Country and established the port colony of Durban. The head of the expedition, Sir Cecil South, took great pains to expand the colony's borders and peacefully treat with the natives. In 1653 he signed a treaty with the tribal kings, gaining great territory and resource rights. However not all native tribes agreed with their kings, and a series of raids between natives and colonials soon expanded into the First Indig War (1655-1691).

During the conflict the chieftains of many tribes resisted their kings and joined the conflict. Sir Cecil's leadership turned the tide against the more numerous natives armies and he drove into their heartland to sack the capital of the Ndau tribe. In 1685 the capital was taken sacked, with no structure left standing. Sir Cecil passed away in Durban at this time, where he had returned due to failing health. The city was renamed Cecilburg in his honour, and made the new colonial capital.

The effects of the Pioneer Fleet were immense. With one act the destiny of the territory was changed forever. The native lands ceased to be the poorly developed backwaters they had slipped into since the subsidence of the Shona state about 500 years earlier and were irreversibly propelled into alignment with the world of the colonists. A new elite snatched control from the Iron Age monarchy which had formerly held sway and retained power through demonstration of overwhelming technological superiority along with a towering confidence in its achievements. A new moral order was also imposed that has dramatically altered the culture and beliefs of the indigenous people.

(to be expanded)

Dominion Era (1800 to Present)

When Southron was granted Dominion status in 1800, its nobles and yeomen responded with even greater loyalty to the King. This was to prove fortunate, as the first of the Nodic conflicts was to soon begin.

(Primarily the Nodic Wars; to be expanded)

The people of Southron

Nobility

Nobles form most of the ruling class of the Dominion. Those who excel in positions of leadership or serve the Dominion in great capacity can find themselves ennobled. Not all positions are hereditary, but many have become so. Noble leaders can be removed from their positions, and possess the right to removed lower ranked nobles not given their position by a higher ranked noble.
A system and culture of nobility is what helps bind the Dominion together. All the provinces and territories have their assortment of nobles, and these nobles are involved with the economics and defense of their areas. Citizens may earn titles of nobility for outstanding service, and many officers in the military are also nobles of varying levels.
Every generation of a noble family is taught to reaffirm their noble status through service to Dominion and the sovereign.

Yeomanry

Yeoman refer to the common free man of Southron, who include those that own a small landed estate, are minor landowners, small prosperous farmers, assistant, journeyman, etc. Essentially those of the low to middle class. These common citizens hold a reputation for hard work, dedication, and fierce loyalty to the Dominion that holds so much promise for them.

Indigs

Many native tribes inhabit Southron, such as the Korekore, amaZulu, Shona, and more. All these remaining peoples live on the tribal trust lands set promised them by the Dominion government. The kings of these tribes have sworn loyalty to the government, and provided manpower and resources for national defence, as well as paying a yearly tithe.

The Duchy and Dominion Government

The Duchy
Duke Ian Smith Friedle governs the Dominion of Southron as Prime Minister, and rules Southron as his role of Duke of the Afrikan March as invested by the authority of the King-Emperor. He also holds the hereditary title of Duke of Cecilburg, which his family inherited from the Rhodes family upon its end during the Second Nodic War.
Duke Freidle is the highest power in Southron and acts as its senior noble, political ruler, and commander-in-chief. The Duke may replace any noble leader, appoint and discharge ministers and other government officials, and make sweeping decisions of national import. The Friedle family currently possesses exclusive claim to this post, as made law by the decree by the King-Emperor. However, like with other noble families it is required that the heir to the Duchy have served at least five years in the Defence Force.
All ruling Dukes are loyal to and beholden to the King-Emperor.
Like the South and Rhodes families that preceded them in leadership of Southron, the Friedle family has sworn to live by the fate of the Dominion.
Earl Harold Friedle, upon the ascension to the Duchy following the death of the last Rhodes Duke in battle, added the phrase "Here I am; Here I remain" to his coat of arms.

Privy Council
This council serves as an advisory bodythat provides timely advice and oversight, and as such is based in Cecilburg. The Privy Council is granted Royal authority to recommend appointments, approve major treaties and agreements, oversee the political and military bureaucracies of Southron, and to ratify the line of succession upon the deaeth of returement of the ruling Duke (including the selection of a regent, if necessary). Membership is limited to the senior leaders of the Dominion, including members of the ministries, the speaker of the House of Yeomen, a fellow member-at-large elected by the Yeomanry, the Marshal of the Armies, and a member of the House of Nobles.

The Duke's Court
In Cecilburg the term has two meanings. To the citizenry it refers to complex of building where government is carried out. Thousands of citizens work within these halls, while many more visit on business or for tourism.
To nobles and social elites, the "Duke's Court" is a social season. Beginning in spring and lasting several months, a portion of the Duke's palace is opened up to the nobility and visiting dignitaries. The Duke and ministers hold open audiences, while at night lavish balls and parties mark the social calender. Plays, concerts, and other events are held.

Parliament - The Vasalraad
This assembly represents the people of Southron and is composed of delegates representing every corner of the nation. While it does not hold the authority of the Duke, it remains an important advisory body, debating matters of national import, passing resolutions to put before the Duke, and even passing internal regulations.
It has two houses: the House of Nobles, which represnts the interests and concerns of the nobility, and the House of Yeomanry, which is far larger and represents the interests of the average citizens.
The indig kings appoints non-voting observers to Parliament.
Parties:
Southron Front - The ruling party, ithas one every major election since the country was founded. It works on a social centrist, fiscal conservatism basis, combined with extreme nationalism and emphasis on maintaining cultural traditions. It maintains a solid majority, pursues an agenda of extreme nationalism, strong state control, continuing indig servitude, and denouncing class-warfare and liberalism.
Royalist Front - Often more conservative and favoring of extended powers to the nobility, it typically ends up forming coalitions with the Southron Front.
Socialist Patriotic Front - It is not so much socialist in its agenda, but is simply more socially and fiscally liberal, favoring a decrease in indig servitude and joining the WA.

-- Ministries of the Dominion --
(a selection of the most prominent)

Ministry of Education
This ministry has a broad mandate to educate the citizenry, Noble and Yeoman alike, though it is not responsible for educating indigs who wish to remain traditional. It determines minimum curriculum standards, licenses teachers, certifies the various schools and universities, selects government scholarship winners, and disperses what funding it has. Many school are privately run, financed, and operated by nobles or yeoman organizations. The ministry also certifies and inspects these schools to ensure they meet standards.
For decades it has provided volunteers that help educated indigs that wish to learn.

Ministry of Foreign Relations
The Foreign Ministry is responsible for the diplomatic missions dispatched to the nations with which the Dominion has formalized relations (as well as unoffical missions to other nations). Ambassadors to foreign nations are appointed by the Prime Minister Duke Ian Friedle and are delegated the power to negotiate treaties and speak on behalf of Southron. A primary diplomatic mission is headed by a senior Ambassador and resides in the capital of the nation to which it was dispatched. These negotiate directly with the leaders of the nation. Secondary diplomatic missions may be establish in other major cities or locations and generally work to create or maintain smooth economic or military relations. These embassies also aid Southron citizens traveling or residing in foreign nations, issuing passports, and maintains information on potential travel dangers.

Ministry of Information Intelligence and Operations
MIIO focuses its attention outwards, cooperating with military intelligence to ensure the security of the people of Southron and their government. Internal Affairs, or Intaf, monitors the internal situation, investigating allegations of corruption and wrongdoing, as well as possible indig terrorist cells. Counterintelligence (CID) focuses on foreign agents and terrorists, and often times cooperates with Intaf to smoke out potential enemies. Covert Operations (COD) plans and carries out operations in foreign nations, such as recruiting agents. Information-Gathering Services (IGS) carries out operations such as electronic surveillance, tapping communication lines, and decrpyting foreign transmissions.

HM Dominion Treasury (Southron)
All matters financial and economic fall under the purview of the Treasury. It has responsibility for the nation's money, from collecting taxes to administering the budget to printing and distributing hard currency, and it also enacts economic policy. It regularly recruits the best and brightest of university graduates and bureaucrats working for other ministeries. The Chancellery of the Exchequer has the broadest mandate of all the ministry's divisions. It collects taxes, disperses those funds to various government agencies, prints and mints money, and maintains the treasury. It also enforces all economic laws related to those responsibilites. The Economic Trade Committee approves and oversees all economics agreements involving entities within the Doiminion. For routin agreements the ETC urarely does more than ensure necessary laws are followed. For international agreements, the ETC becomes more involved. The Dominion Customs Agency has responsibility for the shipment of goods, moniters border crossings, licenses ship, tracks and eliminates foreign smugglers, etc.

Ministry of Defence
While the General Staff and RSDF oversee the practical aspects of the Dominion military, the MoD plays a key role in developing new technologies, raising troops, and generally supporting the combat forces. Most ministers chosen for the job typically are retired soldiers, usually of the highest ranks. The Ministry's goal is to defend Southron and its interests, and stregthen international peace and stability by refraining from unilateral military action. Despite the saber-rattling of belligerent anti-sovereignty nations, the MoD does not forsee any convetional wars at this time and identifies terrorism as the most likely source of future conflict.

Nobility

Dukes
A duke is the first echelon of nobility, though not all are created equal as Duke Ian Friedle rules the Dominion and thus outranks others. A duchy could consist of anything from a parcel of land or even province. Of the twenty wealthiest families in the Dominion, fifteen are dukes.

Marquess
A marquess represents the next echelon down from duke, and the title in two ways. Among ducal families that have authority over multiple holdings, the duke may bestow a marquesship upon a child. Alternately a marquess is the ruler of a frontier holding too minor to warrant a duchy.

Earl
The next title is the earl, who serves as noble leaders of particularly important cities or towns. These nobles have perhaps the most direct effect upon the lives of the average citizens; they directly enact the decisions and polices of the Prime Minister and dukes, and also hear complaints.

Thegn
A mid-tier title often used for those gifted lands as reward for service, or sometimes used for heirs.

Baron
Finally, barons are the lowest level of noble ruler, ruling over minor holdings or military territories. Many barons are yeoman elevated to the rank out of gratitude of their service and loyalty amongst other citizens.

Knight
A last noble title in common use is that of knight. Knighthoods are bestowed alongside land grants. Unlike other nobles, knights do not have legal control over populations and do not collect taxes. Any level of noble can bestow a knighthood upon any citizen. Knighthoods are popular rewards for citizens or soldiers who perform above and beyond the norm.

Royal Southron Defence Force

"We are a generation commanded by fate to defend our Kingdom and Empire."
-Field Marshal Alfred Dietl, 5th Nodic War

The Southron military traces its lineage back to the founding of the first colonial militia in 1652, not long after the first colony was established. Professionalism, competent leadership, and public support, more than the possessed numbers and high technology, are the hallmarks of the RSDF and have contributed to its successes in the past. The RSDF is unhindered by a bloated bureaucracy and murky lines of command. Its organization supports its combat units without unduly hampering field commanders from doing their jobs.
Unity of Command is the predominant concept of leadership. Every officer and enlisted man can trace their lines of command through single individuals, meaning no person serves more than one master on the battlefield. Noble ruler cannot recall forces that belong to them, and bureacrats cannot second-guess command decisions. Authority extends from Duke Friedle all the way down to the lowest squad leader.

All males of sound mind and body join their county Commando as soon as they reach 16. Its a cultural norm. But no one is forced to join the regular Defence Force. Females may volunteer to join their county Commando when 16, but its not necessarily expected.
Men can volunteer for the Defence Forces and Reserves at 17, where they receive training but usually never see assignment to an active combat until at least 18. Basic training is, as the name implies, simples basics meant to prepare a individual for job training and life in his regiment. Regimental training is where troops truely gain their skill. Hence, basic is only 4 months long.

Volunteers may choose their branch, occupation, and unit if space is available. Some units like to recruit exclusively from certain regions. In the event of conscription, they will be placed where needed and qualified.
The maximum age to volunteer is 35. Older gentlemen and nobles have been known to raise regiments, so in that event the age limit is discarded. There is no mandatory age to retire.
Females may serve in a limited selection of non-combat, non-deployable roles. Though circumstances may see female nurses sent overseas.

Conscription is to be used only in extreme emergencies, though it is assumed that by the time it becomes an option the regular manpower of the Dominion has probably already been exhausted. That said, conscription is ineligible for those under 18 except in an extreme emergency. Conscription works in yearly classes, and so could theoretically scoop up a wide range of ages if needed.

The RSAF practices the doctrine of overwhelming firepower and air superiority, seeking to dominate the skies from the outset of a conflict and not ceasing until accomplished. In peacetime it maintains watch over the nation's borders, waters, and territories.
It is organised into a series of commands and groups, each tasked with a specific charge and mission. It operates a number of stations and bases with which to carry out these missions. The RSAF devotes significant resources to maintaining cutting edge technology, and can safely boast that even it can't outdo a foe in tech, it can at least match them.

Many patriotic indigs volunteer to join the Defence Force, and enter the Pfumo reVanhu ("Spear of the People"). These units are organized into regiments and augment regular forces. Their rank structure follows the Army's and some units even feature indig officers.
While the Pfumo reVanhu formally falls under IntAf, it is included here for clarity of its operations as a military force.

The Foreign Legion of Southron is a centuries old organization sworn personally to the Duke of Cecilburg and his family. It is often mostly comprised of foreign adventurers, thrill-seekers, veterans, and descendants of past members. But typically it also comprises roughly 25% native Southroners, mostly in leadership positions.
It often deploys in battle in Brigade Combat Teams, but remains a division-based structure for administration purposes, and a wide range of regimental heritages.

Economy

The Southron economy has experienced a modest boom in recent years from reemerging into international commerce. Real per capita earnings for indigs and Southrons reached record highs, although the disparity in incomes between indigs and Southrons continues, with uneducated indigs typically earning only about one-tenth as much as Southrons. The Dominion continues to depend on the Mother Country, fellow Dominions, and protectorates and associated nations for commerce.

The manufacturing sector, already well-developed before the final Nodic War has been given a major stimulus by the imposition of anti-sovereignty sanctions. The sanctions obliged Southron industry to diversify and create many import-substitution undertakings and to enlarge the defence industry. Southron processing of local raw materials has also grown rapidly. Major growth industries include steel and steel products, heavy equipment, transportation equipment, ferrochrome, textiles, and food processing.

Major Exports:
platinum
diamonds
maize
tobacco
ferrochrome
textiles
gold
cotton

Major Imports:

National Anthem

Rise O voices of Southron

Rise O voices of Southron,
God may we thy bounty share,
Give us strength to face all danger,
And where challenge is, to dare.

Guide us, Lord, to wise decision,
Ever of thy grace aware.
Oh, let our hearts beat bravely always
For this land within thy care.

Rise O voices of Southron,
Bringing her your proud acclaim,
Grandly echoing through the mountains
Rolling over far flung plain

Roaring in the mighty rivers
Joining in one grand refrain
Ascending to the sunlit heavens
Telling of her honoured name

Foreign Relations

The Dominion has not been overly concerned with extended relations with foreign nations for a great while. The diplomatic nightmare of the last Nodic Wars caused a backlash against foreign entanglements. Outside of the familial nations of the Kingdom and Empire there have been few permanent missions for a generation. Only in recent years has this belief began to fade and calls for restoring or beginning relations with many other nations begun.

Ser Jon Overbeck is the current Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and is reportedly eager to enlarge his ministry's role in the current government. He has been instrumental in the recent creation of the International Zone and Foreign Bloc in the city of Patricastadt, just for the purpose of foreign visitors and diplomatic missions.

Nations (or oganizations) the Dominion currently has formalized relations:

Imeriata
Represented in Imerbürg by Edmund Lange, Thegn of Gerd
Radictistan
Represented in Nuxenstat by Franklin Loxley, Earl of Loxely
New Edom
Represented in Padan by Ser Rufus Poole
Hippostania
Represented in Waverly by Ser Oswald Renton

Nations currently with strained relations or a state of war:

Nation Celebrates Founders' Day
April 19th, 2011

People throughout the Dominion, citizen and indig alike, are celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the first colony of Southron. This day marks the arrival of the first colonists and their creation of the port city of Durban. In the 359 years since the colonists arrived from the Mother Country, Southron has developed into a successful and stable power.

As is tradition, Prime Minister Duke Friedle held an open braai* and ball at his estate, welcoming nobles, yeomen, and indigs alike. Some of the notable present including the Dukes of Mittelstadt, Montrose, and Armistead, all the Great Chieftains of the Indig Tribes, and many yeomen citizens eager to participate in the Ducal Ball.
Duke Friedle was pleased to receive a member of the Royal and Imperial Family, the Princess Patricia, to the Ball. She arrived with the King's blessings on Southron, and expressed his regrets that he could not personally be present at the celebration.

Throughout the nation patriotic displays have been made, and outdoor events and games held in honour of the holiday. The Dominion government allowed all non-essential government institutions to close for the day. Many nobles stayed in their fiefs to give speeches and organize free events and meals for the yeomen of their fiefs. Family picnics and braaie* are also very common on this day, many set up in the best spots to prepare for the fireworks show tonight.

Dominion Leaves IASEN
May 16th, 2011

Officials from Duke Ian Smith Friedle's court have announced the Dominion has left the IASEN organization. Citing disagreements on the purposes and leadership of the organization, Dominion officials informed IASEN earlier today of the Duke's decision. While a longtime member our government had had little to do with the day-to-day operations and so the move is expected to have little effect.

The Socialist Patriotic Front has trumpeted the move and have made a push for this to be the first step in a Dominion-wide abolition of the tribal slavery system. Skeptics have pointed out that the provisions of the Treaty of Umtali which ended the final Indig wars would have to be altered for such a change to occur. And at this time Indig Chieftains seem unlikely to back such a move. The Duke's court has made no comment on this debate.

Parliamentarian sources have back the Duke's decision almost unanimously. Indig representatives are reportedly less in support of the move as they had still been in the process of petitioning the Duke to allow the exportation of indig slaves. Experts believe non-indig slave owners will be mostly neutral on the matter, due to IASEN having little effect on their way of life.

The Duke's court has released information that a change in foreign policy may soon take place. The Duke has reported as saying His Royal Highness has authorized an expansion in diplomatic efforts and possibly the establishment of foreign embassies. The SPF leadership has claimed this is the time to re-enter the world stage and even apply for membership in the World Assembly. Several peaceful rallies have been planned.

Good question.

The Springbok Isles are roughly 2387 miles (3841 km) (2074 nautical miles) away, lying far to the south.

The Kapatiranis Islands are roughly 956 miles (1539 km, 831 nautical miles) from the Southron coast. By the fate of geography they guard the approach to Dominion's limited coastline and have been seen as a natural defensive location throughout history.

Treaty of Umtali updated; Dominion joins World Assembly
August 4th, 2011 (dated)

Acting in concert with the Vasalraad and Privy Council, Duke Ian Smith Friedle has renegotiated the Treaty of Umtali, ending 132 years of legalized servitude in the Dominion. In a speech at the Naval Yards of Durban he said: "With the blessings of our gracious King, I have examined the Treaty of Umtali and struck those provisions which have been counter intuitive to our principles.
Though those provisions ensured a start to a long peace and era of cooperation with Tribes of Indigenous, they have lost purpose in these days of our Dominion. The Council of Chiefs have agreed to these changes, and sworn to uphold the Peace of Umtali.
And so I declare with the authority placed upon my House that the practice of servitude formerly permitted shall hence forth and forever be ended immediately. And that all held in servitude at this time be remanded to the custody of the Tribal Justice Bureau to be reexamined as necessary. I have instructed the Ministry of Justice to coordinate with the Bureau to ensure and orderly transition."

This decision has been met with heavy support from the moderate and progressive branches of the Southron Front, and of course the Socialist Patriotic Front and Royalist Front. Opposition quickly ended when the moral support of Her Highness Princess Patricia was added.
Already the process of examinations is underway, and by the end of the year all servitude will be gone.

In the same speech the Duke surprised the country by announcing membership in the controversial and liberal World Assembly. This move was inspired by Duchess Kimberly and requested Princess Patricia, both of whom are famed for their interest in foreign cultures.
The Right Honourable Ser Augustus Raleigh has been appointed ambassador to the World Assembly. Already a World Assembly office has been established in the international zone of the city of Patriciastadt. The structure will house all required offices and personnel, and will be protected by the Patricastadt Constabulary.

However controversy has already begun, as the Duke has so far refused to empower six resolutions (#9 Prevention of Torture, #15 Freedom of Marriage Act, #18 The Prisoner of War Accord, #21 Living Wage Act, #40 The Landmine Convention, #102 International Criminal Court) with the binding power of the law. Reportedly the Privy Council is working to resolve issues with these resolutions, many of which Ser Augustus has publicly claimed are "poorly written" or "ignorant of foreign cultures."

Duke alters Embassy to the World Assembly
January 31st, 2012 (dated)

The law of the World Assembly will no longer have any bearing in Southron, the Duke's Court has announced.

The diplomatic experiment which began four months ago has not been well received throughout the Dominion, and critics in government had begun petitioning the Duke for a formal withdrawal from the "perfidious organization" as it is known. Duchess Kimberly conceded in the Privy Council that the World Assembly has proven too obstinate and ignorant a group to subject the Dominion's laws to.

Hesitant to cut out an important channel of diplomacy, the Duke has instead opted for a new embassy that will give his government an international voice without complicating domestic affairs. The compromise has already met with support from MPs on both sides of the issue.

His Grace the Duke has today created Ser Augustus Raleigh the Baron of Kunze, empowering him the right and position to continue to act as representative to the World Assembly (WA) for the government of Southron. The territory of "Kunze" has been created as an autonomous territory permitted to self-government. As yet its area of control is said to be the former Southron embassy to the WA. All employees have been granted dual-citizenship, and Lord Kunze has asked and been allowed to continue using Southron currency, passports, and other documents.

Lord Kunze will formally return to the World Assembly at the end of this week, and continue his duties. Many people throughout the Dominion have expressed their respect for his dedication to duty, and relief at the end of WA law.

Military Expedition to Joseon ends; troopers return home
May 10th, 2012

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced that the two month long military relief expedition dispatched to the Oriental nation of Joseon has come to a close.

Government sources say the move was greatly desired by His Grace, and the Speaker of the Vasalraad was heard to have expressed joy at "leaving the primitives be." Already most of the 20,000 or so personnel dispatched to the foreign land had returned, save for a small contingent left overseeing two military installations as a gesture of goodwill.

The forward operating base, or FOB, Cabbot was formally closed in a ceremony by its commanding officer Brigadier General Clayton Lathbury. Both the 8th/90th Afrikan Rifles and 356 Pfumo Re Vanhu battalion, along with their supporting elements, dismantled the site before leaving in a massive airlift described as "brilliantly performed" by military observers.
Following this move the naval station on the Liaodong Peninsula was similarly dismantled and the garrison departed on ships. The MoD explained the redeployment at strategically logical.

Vice Foreign Minister Darlian has explained: "We have few foreign commitments outside of the Empire at this time. His Grace consulted with the Privy Council and concluded that an additional military presence overseas would not be desirable or beneficial. We wish the Joseon Dynasty well and continue to advocate their independence and cultural security, and applaud the Stoklomolvi government for investing so much in that region's security. These are hard days for many."

Others felt less diplomatic of the situation. To quote one trooper of the 90th Afrikan Rifles, who asked to remain anonymous, "The country was backwards, the people weird, and the food good but not enough to stay. Glad to be home!"

Image
Returning troopers on parade.

Regardless, the arrival of the troopers at Rhodes International Airport in Patriciastadt turned out immense crowds happy to see their friends and family home. His Grace Duke Friedle even made an unannounced arrival, which kicked off a city-wide braai in honour of the moment.
No comment has been heard, nor is expected, from the Joseon government.

Trial of Robert Matibili still unscheduled
May 11th, 2012

The military tribunal at Durban set up to prosecute the captured leader of the Congaree Liberation Front (CLF) has not yet announced a trial date.

Robert Matibili has reportedly continued to resist responding to questions, as he did during his capture and closed arraignment. IntAf sources do say that at one point he launched into a tirade denouncing the legitimacy of the Southron government and its authority to try him as a war criminal. After refusing to silence himself he was removed from the chamber. His lawyers have steadfastly declared he is mentally unfit for trial.

Self-proclaimed chairmen of the Congaree Liberation Front, Robert Matibili is charged with a series of attacks over the last 30 years involving the deaths of hundreds of people. He has personally been charged with seventy-nine counts of murder of civilians, police, and military personnel, and the murder of 147 officers and crew aboard the HMSS Huku. Several of his lieutenants and self-appointed cabinet members are facing similar trials currently.

A judge overturned a request to have all evidence obtained during routine Internal Affairs (IntAf) interrogations thrown out, though the defence claims it was gained via torture. Allegations of IntAf committing torture on captured CLF terrorists has met with hostility in the public arena. A prevailing view of "fair turnaround" remains over the many cases of CLF torture of hostages and other victims.

Robert Matibili and his accomplices were captured in a lightning raid by IntAf agents and C Squadron-SAS operatives last year. The raid, authorized by His Grace Duke Friedle, was based on intelligence gathered by IntAf agents and CLF defectors. The speed and professionalism of the assault ensured no deaths, and solidly ended a lifetime of guerrilla war by the CLF leader.

With Matibili's capture and trial, the dominion breathes safely for the first time since the marxist Congaree Liberation Front appeared in bloody arms nearly a century ago amid the chaos of the First Great War. Though crushed and nearly destroyed, the CLF spent the last nine decades eking out an existence based on crime and terrorism in the hinterlands and swamps of the dominion. Control of the terrorist organization passed from father to son, from its founder Cassius Matibili to his great-grandson Robert. Many of Robert's sons had been killed in the last few years, and several still remain at large.

The Royal Southron Constabulary is coordinating with IntAf to prevent a possible CLF reaction by heightening security levels and deploying more constables. Citizens are urged to keep calm and "look out for one another, as always," says Chief Constable James McIntyre. Police and IntAf officials have stressed the seriousness of the situation.

Others have been more blatantly upbeat; "Marxism in Southron is finally dead," declared one anonymous IntAf agent.

Defence Force recieves foreign arms
August 3rd, 2012

The Department of Quartermasters and Procurement (DQP) for the Royal Southron Defence Force (RSDF) had completed an order for arms, vehicles, and munitions produced overseas, it was announced earlier in a government release.

The arms in question were purchased from Vereinigte Waffenindustrie des Yohannesiches Konigreichs (VMK Defence) and Lyran Arms, two sources with reputedly high reputations and standards of practices and manufacture. The deal was completed for a total ฿26.69 billion (58.5 billion USD) of the DQP's budget, and a critical investment into defence claim many MPs.

"YMK Defence alone contracts with scores of nations around the world. Not allowing our Defence Forces access to the common arms of foreigners would be irresponsible," said Alexander Gardener MP when asked why he spearheaded the proposal to purchase in the House of Yeomanry.

Military sources were more blunt. Major General Ambrose Cleburn bluntly put it: "It is tactically sound to know the weaponry a possible foe will be deploying. Though most of it does not match the quality of similar domestically produced arms, it pays to have our own soldiery gain firsthand knowledge."

RSDF sources confirmed that the most of the weaponry would be handed down to the Foreign Legion for permanent issue. This will save the Legion on purchases for a five year period, and allow it to take part in war games and trials as cadre imitating foreign powers. Legionary Command has announced it will provisionally structure its Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) along division lines to accommodate to the influx of arms, including three armoured divisions, two mechanised divisions, and an "Ironheart" division of unstated composition. The artillery "division" assets also obtained would be redistributed among commands within these combat structures.

Elements of the foreign packages were released on detached duty for the Middelstadt Institute of Science and Technology's (MIST) Defence Cadres to utilise for the late winter war games this year. Operation GALAHAD is expected to begin on the 5th of August. The three MIST Cadres will be cooperating with handpicked battle groups from the six new Legion divisions in challenging multiple Army regiments. These activities will simulate combat with foreign aggressors and be valuable learning tools.

RSDF Command expects, "...if nothing else, educational results."

A Party in Padan
August 27th, 2012

Foreign Office Undersecretary Johann de Buys has confirmed rumours of a diplomatic mission to the Allied States of New Edom, a state violently divided by religious zealots and anarchists seeking to supplant their natural monarchy.

The purpose for the visit was announced as the "fostering of good will for the Edomites during a rough period." Among the attendants were the Duchess of Natal and her grandson Lord Jacob Friedle, Ambassador Plenipotentiary Lord Kunze, and the esteemed Master Rufus Poole. They were joined by envoys from other sympathetic realms, including the Imperial Republic of Sensal.

What was not officially confirmed, but has been largely leaked and undenied, is that the young Lord Jacob was present to court the heir to the New Edom throne, Princess Mara of House Obed. Reportedly the two young nobles share many hobbies and enjoyed each others company to a high degree. Though Lord Jacob did not return with a young bride, he did return with a smile and good words for the Monarchist cause. At his graduation from Amistead Military Academy he spoke of a need to "improve relations with sovereign states, and defend just leaders from the chaos of a tyranny of the majority and fanaticism," much to the approval of his classmates and attending officials.

The situation in New Edom itself is currently described as a quagmire. Foreign sources indicate multiple attempts at ceasefires have been made, but that the rebel "Free Congress" has repeatedly acted in bad faith. Armed militias enforcing unpopular religious code and committing wanton sexual abuse on virtually every child they encounter have been confirmed and documented. This rebel junta seems backed by a coalition of dubious foreign states that have deployed and utilized occupation forces under the guise of peacekeepers. Incidents by these "peacekeepers" have resulted in high non-combatant loss of life.

The Court of His Grace the Duke of Cecilburg has thus been understandably hesitant about heavy involvement in the "unfortunate powder keg" that is New Edom. Lord Jacob's recent visit does not appear to have immediately changed that stance. Her Grace the Duchess of Cecilburg has, however, spoken sympathetically of the House of Obed's plight and the suffering of the Edomite people.
"Some good must exist to be done there," Her Graced was quoted as saying when discussing the matter during a Fun Run. "Even amongst this so-called 'Free' Congress there must be good people working to make the best out of a bad situation."

Whether or not the Dominion will involve itself so as to make the best of a bad situation remains to be seen.

Ambassador to Fineberg Named
August 28th, 2012

With shaky relations still forming, the Foreign Office has announced the indomitable Rufus Poole has been named Envoy to the Allied States of New Edom.

Master Poole has also been inducted made a Member of the Order of Southron, and so knighted for his flawless loyalty, accomplishments, and obedience to duty. The young diplomat is well remembered for his years of service in the staff of then-Ser Augustus Raleigh, who now is styled Lord Kunze. Such a career path has given Ser Rufus much experience that can now be put to good use. Ser Rufus also gained connections and friendships in the Edomite government during the recent mission to Padan.

Currently his staff and the embassy itself are still be established. One appointment has been confirmed, that of the military attache. Captain Ellie Curtis is a graduate of the Amistead Military Academy and the youngest woman in the Defence Force to make that rank so quickly. It is said her appointment came due to "endless optimism for her qualities and devotion to duty," by Commandant Robert Norris of Amistead.

The Foreign Office reportedly asked for a much larger garrison for the embassy, befitting its status in a conflict-ridden nation. The entire regiment of the Foreign Legion's New Edom Hussars was suggested. Ser Rufus turned down this idea, firmly stating the move would turn the embassy into a fortress or armed camp, and probably attract more trouble than it prevented. Thus far the embassy has received the usual Marine and Diplomatic Secretariat contingent.

Ser Rufus Poole says he looks forward to living in the foreign land. "It's a beautiful country. New Edom, that is. Home is too, though. But I like what I saw of New Edom."
When questioned on whether the famous author Countess Olivia Lalery would be a guest at the embassy, Ser Rufus replied, "Uh, no comment."

Southron deploys troops to Cornellian empire
December 17, 2012 (dated)

Fifteenth Army will garrison Vergil Islands colony.

The Ministry of Defence is confirming the deployment of the Fifteenth Army Legionary to the distant Vergil Islands in the Cornellian Empire. This movement was announced to already be underway.

Around half of the 270,000 Legionnaires are expected to take up station within the month, with the rest to arrive within an unspecified period, said Lt. Col. Art Gerold, public affairs officer for the Fifteenth Army. Most Legionnaires are expected to garrison Ioannis, either at Fort Burgundy or Vergil Territorial Army Depot.

“Next year is going to be very busy, probably the busiest we’ve ever had,” Gerold said. "This is going to be easily the most people we’ve had deployed in recent memory. As done before in Joseon, this will be a critical test of our new mass-transit air capabilities.”

No immediate security concern has been cited for the move, he said.

The fourteen divisions composing Fifteenth Army will coordinate with the colony's local regiment, Princess Patricia's Southron Light Infantry and its Vergil Civil Defence colleagues. All units have begun a winter program practicing basic soldier skills on the field and among mock buildings for an unspecified amount of time. Several Legionary divisions have been outfitted with foreign-made equipment, a trait that undoubtedly contributes to the war games.

General Albert Cecil Foley, commander of the Fifteenth, expressed great satisfaction at the selection of his army to go to the Vergil Islands. "It is a dangerous mission. The Cornellian empire has been plagued with civil war and brutal sectarian violence for many recent years. My Legionnaires are honoured to go."

It has been observed that the majority of the deploying army is made up of Legionnaires of the former 711th Light Havenic Combat Army. At least 8 of the 14 divisions carry the Havenic prefix, verifying their long service record.

The Duke of Delos, Deon Theron, announced a day of parades and celebration for the arrival of the Legionnaires. Duke Delos and General Foley served together during the Great Nodic War, and it is believed the Duke requested the Fifteenth specifically. The Vergil Islands, founded as an agricultural experiment by freebooters and explorers, has experienced a surge in population in the last century in part due to the growth of regional commerce and conflict.

No comment has been made on how the regional Cornellian governments may react to this troop movement.
