"Urrgah!"

From somewhere amongst the Ursine supporters, as the match is just drawing to its close, a chant begins to rise _

"Kill the Ref!"
"Kill the Ref!"
"Kill the Ref!"
"Kill the Ref!"

The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

As a show of respect to Commerce Heights, the Holy Empire will field a slightly modified version of its World Cup 48-winning side.

The Holy Empire friendly will take place in the famous Imperial Hippodrome.

THE HOLY EMPIRE ROSTER:

Coach -
Juan Tzimisces - This World Cup Hall of Fame legend has been involved with Imperial football, as either player or coach (or both) in most Imperial squads since World Cup 1; have we mentioned that time passes differently in the Dreamed Realm? Tzimisces was an Imperial General during The Event, and led the Imperial Forces at the Battle of the Gate - holding the Black Gate with only 100 men for fully 100 days.

He also coached the WC48 winners, taking the field as a substitute in the quarterfinals and final - gaining joint credit for scoring the winning goal in the final. His teams additionally reached the finals of WCs 45 and 49; no mean feat considering the first was a group of neolithic cavemen, and the second was a squad of murderous Aztec deities. Taking a squad of ill-fitting "choose a squad" misfits to third place in the recently completed WC54 was arguably one of his finest achievements.

He will play in his traditional central midfield role as a player-coach in this one-off friendly.

Goal:

Jorge Botaniates - Master of Night, Sire of Day - most famous of the Shadow Warriors; returned to professional football following The Event, though has since retired again.

Defence:

Constantine Lichoudo - Decent full-back; but who dares speak of his dread deeds at the Field of Blood?

Juan Tzimisces Jr. - Son of the coach; in WC48 he returned to his traditional spot in the centre of defence for the first time since WC27 (or thereabouts); rumoured to be considering a proper comeback for WC55. He was at the Black Gate with his father.

John Camatero - He built the Wall of Fire with his own bare hands, which are now but bloodied stumps.

Midfield:

Philotheus Coccino - Wielded the Blue Sword at the Second Sounding of the Deep; his speed and agility will be more than useful on the left.

Simon Brades - Looks uncannily like the Holy Empire's assistant coach Simeone Di Bradini; his presence in the team is more than a little mysterious, though he's clearly from the Chaco. Persistent rumours claim that he's the last surviving vat ghoul from the Armaghetto.

Juan Tzimisces - Coach, and greatest Imperial legend of them all.

Ug-Ug - Perhaps second only to Juan Tzimisces as the greatest legend in Imperial footballing history. A prehistoric caveman who only speaks in words of one syllable, and captain of both the WC45 and WC48 squads his inspiring cry of "Ug-Ug know not how to lose" is one of the most famous catchphrases in World Cup history. Has come out of retirement for this match.

Arsenius Autoreianuso - His stirring speech to his fellow officers at the sounding of the Horn of Stone is already almost a legend; deadly with corner kicks.

Forwards:

Alexius Comneno - His exploits leading the forward line in World Cup 3 were matched only by his leadership of the White Assassins during the Siege of The Third Sun.

Andreas Boradiotes - Served in the Chacan artillery during the Battle of the Red Moon, and his left foot is just as accurate in finding its target as was the Jade Cannon.

Substitutes:
The squad is essentially invulnerable; it has no need of subs.

Style:
3-5-2 with overlapping wingers to become 3-3-4 when attacking. Style modifier +3.

Kits:
The Holy Empire has been wearing the famous gold, red, and black kits (home left, away right) since WC1:

OOC -
For further information on the Holy Empire, the Dreamed Realm and other relevant background detail, please go to the now rather out of date [http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Alasdair_I_Frosticus] Holy Empire NS WIKI page.

Please remember that 'The Holy Empire' is the preferred name for this nation in IC media reports. 'Frostican' is an acceptable adjective. I'm perfectly happy for you to use 'Alasdair I Frosticus' and 'AIF' in OOC posts and threads.

And my RP preferences?

Feel free to do almost anything you want not forbidden elsewhere in the roster short of attacking, damaging, or in any other way harming the Holy Empire, the Dreamed Realm, the Archregimancy or their people, . Remember that A) travel to the Dreamed Realm is only possible through specially-constructed portals, and B) violent behaviour by visitors to the Dreamed Realm results in immediate and instantaneous deportation.

Bettian Squad

Playing Style

In keeping with the traditional Takilan way we play football, Bettia will be playing with as positive a style modifier as possible (+3 ?), utilising the now-familiar highly attacking 2-5-3 / 2-3-5 formation.

Roleplaying

If RPing first, the Football Association of Bettia (FAB) give our opponents permission
to RP / godmod pretty much anything they like, short of killing or maiming anyone.

Nickname: The Aroras
First Kit: Green and gold quartered shirts, green shorts
Second Kit: Blue and white quartered shirts, blue shorts (this kit is always worn against any teams playing in predominantly red strips)
Image

Home Stadium: Tiddles Park, Gabalfa (capacity 102,000 - approx 50,000 seated)

A few facts about Bettia:
  1. Bettians are well-known for their politeness and friendliness, a fact backed up by many 'reliable' WA reports.
  2. Bettia is a mainly muslim country, so any fans looking to have an away-day piss-up will be very disappointed. Our local tea and scones are very popular though, as are the famous Butetown meat pies which are widely available from many outlets around the stadium.
  3. Bettia is renowned for its natural beauty and glorious tropical weather, so any visiting fans wanting to make a vacation of their match are more than welcome. Favourite holiday destinations include the south coast (with its many pristine beaches and clear blue waters) and the Banastra Rainforest.
  4. Bettians are legendary for their dislike of the colour red due to its association with all things evil - hell, Satan, fire, anger, rage etc. In many cases, this exhibits itself as a phobia that can leave the average Bettian a gibbering wreck. Visiting teams who normally wear red as part of their national strip are kindly requested not to do so. However, we do have a defence against this - the patented Azurlens(tm) blue-tinted sunglasses which made their debut at World Cup 33 to great effect, which help to nullify their opponents' evil redness.
  5. Bettians love football so much that giant screens are now a permanent fixture in many cities and towns. International matches are treated as though they were national holidays, around which huge crowds gather in their thousands to see the game. Away supporters without tickets are more than welcome to come to Bettia and make use of these facilities in Gabalfa city centre together with the locals.
  6. Details of our national anthem, map, currency and many other interesting and not-so-interesting facts can be found at the Bettia Wiki.

The twenty-fifth anniversary of UICA’s foundation is to be celebrated in fitting style, with two football matches at the venerable Holmes Stadium in Columbia, Paripana. The UICA Celebration Prelude will kick off the evening, with the youth of today paying homage to the stars of yesteryear who took part in the very first TakilQuip Champions’ Cup final between Olympique Protectorat and Yuba United. That long-awaited rematch will be followed swiftly by the night’s main event, the UICA Celebration Match between Yuba United and Petardos S/A, two clubs with unmatched history in UICA competitions, who both hoisted the World Champion Clubs’ Cup on this ground.

A more perfect union
The Celebration Match will mark the silver anniversary of the merger between the Paripana-based organizing committee for the Champions’ Cup (whose duties also included the Series B Champions’ Cup and Super Cup) and the Cafundelense organizers of the Globe Cup, which formed the Union of International Club Associations. Sixteen editions of the Champions’ Cup had been held prior to the merger, while the other competitions had run for thirteen, having all been founded to coïncide with the fourth Champions’ Cup. Though the two committees had always worked closely together to facilitate the competitions’ intertwined formats, bringing them together under one roof (the retractable one of the Olympic Tower’s stadium in the sky) enabled a greater degree of coöperation, the results of which include revenue sharing for clubs in all UICA competitions and a voice of authority on matters pertaining to club football.

Ambassadors welcome
In addition to commemorating UICA’s own history and offering compelling football, the event forms part of a series of matches aimed at bringing the world of fancy pens and tête-à-têtes a little closer to the world of sliding tackles and golazos. The World Assembly’s Security Council is currently considering a proposal entitled “Commend Commerce Heights” which would recognize the “vast contributions to International Sport and Economics” of institutions born in the Paripanan archipelago, including the Olympic Council and UICA. The government of Unibot is responsible both for authoring the proposal and for bringing together a number of the great names in World Cup history to replay classic rivalries (and maybe even create one or two new ones) throughout the voting process, and the UICA Celebration Match will form a continuation of these festivities.

Beyond the game
The proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorship, and television rights will be divided evenly between the three participating clubs, but will not go into their already well-lined pockets; each club will donate its share to a chosen charitable organization aiming to help build communities through sport. Yuba United has chosen the Gim Sûn-suŋ Foundation, recently established by the most decorated biathlete in Olympic history in an attempt to build a following for his sport around the world. Petardos S/A’s portion will be sent to the Fundação Ponto do Vovô, which works throughout the Atlantian Oceania region to keep children in troubled neighborhoods from perpetuating that trouble by introducing them to sports such as bocce. UICA’s own GoldenGoal program, which issues grants to member associations for grassroots football development and a variety of other worthy projects, will receive Olympique Protectorat’s share of the spoils.

Officials in the spotlight
UICA has chosen thirteen top officials from thirteen of its oldest associations to work the matches. Aeuialnyl Tallothta from Valanora was chosen to take charge of the UICA Celebration Match, while Cafundelense referee Ornell Jordan will be the man in the middle for the Celebration Prelude. Jordan will be assisted by officials from Aguazul, Krytenia, Liventia, and Pasarga, and Tallothta is expected to have the support of assistants from Ad’ihan, Estresse Intenso, Sorthern Northland, and West Zirconia. The fourth officials for the two matches are provided by Valladares and Jasĭyun, while Capitalizt SLANI’s Steve Wilson will be held in reserve as a fifth official for both matches.

UICA Celebration Prelude
Anyone who knows anything about football history can tell you about goalkeeper Ha Sûn-ji’s heroic roal in the first Champions’ Cup final. The match finished 1–1 after ninety minutes, 2–2 after a hundred and twenty, and fans held their breath as the ensuing shootout dragged on, with the score 8–8 after each side had taken ten kicks from the mark. The two goalkeepers were the last to make an attempt; Ha Sûn-ji saved his opposite number’s shot, and followed up with the strike that made Yuba United the first world champion of the modern era.
That shootout, which remains the longest in the competition’s history, could have been the birth of a famous rivalry. It wasn’t. Olympique Protectorat and Yuba United have only faced each other on one occasion since that historic day at Holmes Stadium: a second knockout round tie in Globe Cup 5, in which l’OP got some measure of revenge, winning the second leg in Yuba 1–0 and the tie 2–1 on aggregate. The Silver–Blues went on to win the Champions’ Cup on three further occasions, while the Ad’ihani side hasn’t even appeared in a first-tier UICA competition since Globe Cup 10. Now they symbolically renew their series with an under-21 friendly; the fact that the teams are not playing at full strength and this is not the main event will no doubt leave supporters of both sides wondering what might have been.
Yuba United’s kit for this match will be a replica of the kit worn in the first Champions’ Cup final, with the match logo and UICA Respect patch anachronistically applied.

UICA Celebration Match
After winning the first Champions’ Cup, Yuba United was denied the opportunity to return to Holmes Stadium for the second final, losing in the first knockout round to some obscure club by the name of Albrecht FC. Instead, Cafundelense runners-up Petardos S/A would hoist the trophy on that occasion, defeating the equally-obscure Raynor City Rockers (now United—with what, we don’t know) to be the first club to actually win the final. The first two champions quite nearly met in the third final, but the semifinals saw Petardos S/A defeated on the away goals rule and Yuba United defeated in extra time; it was not until the fifth final, at the national stadium of Dancougar, that the Silver–Blues and os Bilionários would finally walk out onto the same pitch at the same time. That final was one of the most anticipated and most watched in football history, with the Cafundelense side eventually winning in a see-saw battle, three goals to two. The two clubs have remained ever-present in the Champions’ Cup, and now stand as the only two clubs to qualify for the group stage in every edition; Champions’ Cup 22 was the first and only time that neither team advanced to the knockout phase. Since their showdown in Yuki City, Yuba and Petardos have been drawn together on three occasions, with each team advancing twice—both advanced from the group stage of Champions’ Cup 14. Yuba United leads the series 4–0–3; they have won each of the three matches played in Yuba, though the sides have yet to meet at the new Alesanka Park, while Petardos S/A has won two matches of three at the Obelisco Monumental.
Though Yuba United has been designated the home team for this match and would therefore be entitled to wear its traditional blue, the club has instead commissioned a special orange kit, representing the club’s Champions’ Cup success. Four stars appear above the crest for the four times they have won the competition; the club had abandoned the use of stars to represent achievements after winning its third world title in Champions’ Cup 18. The colors of Yuba United and Petrados S/A will no doubt draw comparisons to the Paripanan administration of the Champions’ Cup (orange) and Cafundelense administration of the Globe Cup (blue); Petardos is even based in the same city (Lasft) as UICA’s second home, though Yuba is quite some distance from the Aeropag headquarters. Yuba United’s commemorative kits for both matches will be auctioned, with the resulting funds deposited into the general match fund to be divided between the three beneficiaries.
