Lamoni enters GATA, trade expected to expand with GATA members

Looking to further expand and diversify the already vast Lamonian trade network, the Free Republic has joined the Global Aerospace Trade Association, an organization dedicated to trade via Low Earth Orbit, as well as atmospheric "skipping" craft, and the protection of trade routes between member nations. The Free Republic has a well-established LEO spacecraft industry thanks to production rights purchases from Pharthan's Final Frontier store, which includes space stations which the Free Republic can build in order to expand upon these trade routes, allowing more goods and services to be traded amongst the GATA nations in a sustained manner.
But before we get into the business of what the Free Republic can and cannot do in space, just who are the other members of GATA? For the convenience of the reader, we have assembled the following list of GATA members, in alphabetical order:
* Haishan
* Havensky
* Lamoni
* Macabees, The
* Mokastana
* Morrdh
* Palmyrion
* Urulandia
A number of names in this list are certain to be recognized by our Lamonian readers, especially that of the The Golden Throne. Among other effects that Lamonian entry to GATA offers, it has also further integrated the economies of the largest (The Golden Throne), and second largest (Lamoni) economies in the region of Greater Dienstad, allowing for vastly increased trade between the two nations in the future, as travel time for goods and services between the two will drop considerably. Economists have warned that the prices of trade goods between GATA members and Lamoni will rise, until the new LEO and atmospheric trade routes between us have been fully established, which is expected to take a few years, at most. As a GATA nation, trade barriers between the Free Republic and other GATA nations are expected to drop, as per official GATA policy. Prices are then expected to drop, and eventually become lower than they are now. At some point in the future, it may well be possible to take Low Earth Orbit flights to The Golden Throne and other GATA members, as if they were the regularly scheduled airliner flights of today. Such "space tourism" is also expected to have a positive benefit on the economy.
As to what the Free Republic has to offer such a trade group, let us begin with the space station design which the Free Republic can build. A preliminary analysis of existing GATA trade routes has revealed the need for space stations, which can monitor GATA trade routes for any signs of trouble, enhance GATA communications, as well as providing a rescue or resupply capability for the crews of Low Earth Orbit craft. Cruithne rockets can help lift supplies or Ceres Orbital Delivery Vehicles into space, while Dawntreader or Valkyrie Orbiters can transfer personnel and equipment to and from space without the need for Cruithne rockets. With GATA being a trade-bloc, Lamonian trade goods and services would have an important part to play in the arrangement, as well.
I also had the pleasure to discuss the Lamonian entry to GATA, as well as its effects, earlier this week via telephone with Enrík Cardíl, the Macabeean attaché to GATA. While many questions were asked some of the more important questions and answers are displayed below. In the interest of making the discussion easier to follow for the reader, we have shortened my name to MW, and the attachés' name to EC. These abbreviations will be used in order to help the reader to understand who is speaking at what moment.
MW: Mr. Cardíl, what estimated net effect will a joint space station have on the Macabeean and Lamonian economies?
EC: Hmm, very good question! What kind of traffic can that space station tolerate, and at what volume? The higher the volume of sustained traffic, the larger that the economic impact on both nations will be, in the terms of exchanged goods and services.
MW: What does The Golden Throne have to say to any Dienstadi powers who might view this joint venture as some kind of threat? After all, the Kingdom of Imbrinium has destroyed most regional satellites in the past, without discriminating between military and civilian use.
EC: The Kingdom of Imbrinium is an ally of The Golden Throne. While this news will surprise both Imbrinium, and other powers, we hope that they will allow us to trade in peace, especially once they are certain that no aggressive moves are being made against them. It is also no secret that The Golden Throne and the Kingdom of Imbrinium have a joint civilian space program, so it is our hope that this will prevent anything rash from occurring.
MW: How much positive influence might Lamonian space stations and spacecraft have when it comes time for the Free Republic to join GATA?
EC: The Golden Throne is surprised that Lamoni has not already asked to join. Its membership would be accepted immediately. (NOTE: This was before the Lamonian application was put forth to GATA (and approved thereupon.))
MW: GATA might be the first major joint undertaking between the two largest economies in Greater Dienstad. Have further joint economic efforts been discussed between The Golden Throne and the Free Republic?
EC: You tell me. We are open to any economic discussions. Our trade policies, while locally determined, are to a very large extent non-existent. Trade is very much free. It would be nice if Lamoni reciprocated, unless of course it already has or its trade policy is already as liberal as ours.
Lamonian entry into GATA has also had another interesting side-effect, opening up trade between the Free Republic, and Haishan. Our readers might recall that Haishan is a nation in the northeast of Greater Dienstad, of which relatively little is known by outsiders at this time. Seen to compete with the so-called "Lyro-Lamonian bloc" for influence within the region, there has been surprisingly few diplomatic overtures between the two. It has been speculated that the government of the Free Republic might take advantage of our entry to GATA in order to establish trade with Haishan, and perhaps learn more about the nation which many in the Free Republic regard as a "high-tech anomaly."
