HOW MUCH DID HE KNOW?
MOUNTING EVIDENCE LINKS PRESIDENT TO DEATH OF PATRICIA FYODEROV

January 22nd LET 57 Last updated 23:52 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

ASSASSINATION SCANDAL
In a shocking turn of events, a federal judge has ruled that there was "compelling evidence" that President Fyoderov was involved in the killing of his ex wife.
Image
R-SOD has confirmed that the order to kill Patricia Fyoderov came
from the President's office

All ten people who were facing charges in connection what has been confirmed as an "assassination" walked free today, following "compelling evidence" that they were working on orders from R-SOD.

Gojia Haraa - an R-SOD agent - claimed that he had been ordered to carry out the killing but to disguise it as an accident. He claimed not to know the reasons and that the orders were given to him by members of R-SOD's higher echelons.

R-SOD were initially hesitant to corroborate this story, stating that "for national security reasons we do not comment on specific missions" however after being ordered to release any relevant documents, R-SOD CEO Yulian Bentley confirmed that the order came from the President's office.

Bentley stated that he did not know whether or not President Fyoderov had obtained approval from the Covert Operations Committee, nor was he aware that the primary target was a Radiatian citizen.

"As far as we are concerned any order from the President's office conforms to the appropriate legislation and processes. We are public servants, not the Executive Branch of government."

When questioned on why no questions were asked, Bentley stated that "It is R-SOD policy that such an act would constitute political interference. We have to follow orders."

Bentley confirmed that there is truth to the rumour that each President gets "two free kills", in a tradition dating back to Traiyan Silviu.

"This policy exists not for political purposes, but for the sake of plausible deniability," He said. "It has usually been used to remove national security threats without a paper trail that might damage diplomatic relations."

Asked if this could be potentially used for corrupt purposes or political gain, Bentley laughed and said, "Oh yes. This has happened many times over."

Bentley stated that in light of recent events he was "considering" a review into R-SOD's standard practices and said that relevant changes to the structure of the organisation could possibly be expected "around the year LET 100".

Meanwhile, the Federal Assembly judicial committee has confirmed that it has drafted articles of impeachment for the President, which could potentially see him removed from office.

President Fyoderov's once stratospheric approval ratings have continued to slide, while on the international stage he has been described as a "political liability", with democratic world leaders now trying to distance themselves from him out of fear that he may besmirch their own reputations.

High-Envoy to Higgins and Brown: "If You Don't Stop Attacking Algrabad, You Will Deal With Us"

January 25th, Aetas Liberi 24.

Image
High-Envoy Nico Hass at a public meeting of the Council of Patricians, announcing full military support for Algrabad..

The matriarchal (meaning ruled by women) nation of Algrabad's entry into UNCA raised some eyebrows. Both Segland and Hadin, the first nations to sign and ratify the Axis Treaty, are patriarchal (meaning ruled by men, the way things are supposed to be) in nature, and have established differences with the nation of Algrabad that have been noted in the past.

However, relations are thawing. Hadin and Algrabad have a civilian exchange program, meant to relocate and habilitate citizens of Algrabad and Hadin who may be of more interest to each other's countries than their own homeland, in a show of goodwill to the overall UNCA alliance. "It may be," said Envoy Ulnis Vichenszi of Kopur, "that the god-given duty of these seemingly 'rebellious' individuals may be to serve as ambassadors of goodwill to our allies, than ourselves". Segland also announced during the UNCA conference in Ryutsvaag (the capital of Segland), that UNCA as a whole would recognize the Buffer Zone (a strip of "unclaimed" land, which lies between Algrabad and Higgins-Brown) as the sole property of the nation of Algrabad.

Algrabad has been accosted by attacks and raids by the Higgins and Brownite military, and has committed such atrocities that even the normally brutal and militaristic nation of Nui-ta is condemning the latter nation for its actions. Nui-ta's Prime Minister, Paolo Medici, even stated in a meeting of the Nui-tan Parliament (general sessions of Nui-ta's Parliament have publicly available hansards, from which this information was obtained), that the nation of Higgins and Brown could only expect military support from Nui-ta in the event that Higgins-Brown was fighting a self-defensive war --- something that the international community knows is clearly not the case.

With Higgins and Brown showing no signs of stopping attacks on what should be Algrabadi soil, even though its actions have turned away the last non-UNCA nation to have previously offered it some support (Radiatia and Conpatria distanced themselves from Higgins and Brown long ago), High-Envoy Nico Hass has now added Hadin's opposition to the possible conflict.

"We are a god-fearing nation, a strong nation, and a loyal nation, no matter what the international community would have the world believe otherwise," H.E Hass said in his announcement at the public meeting.

"When even Nui-ta is refusing to help Higgins and Brown, you know the Higgins-Brownite cause is nothing but trouble. The nation of Algrabad's citizens do not deserve to live in fear of Brownite abuse, and as a member of UNCA, the nation of Algrabad has been promised assistance in this conflict".

"You are the true warmongers of this world, attacking innocent civilians in the Buffer Zones with no prior provocation. You think yourselves justified in a seemingly honorable cause; I call it delusion! There is no nation in Noctur that has declared any support for you. You are on a road to glorious hell-fire".

"There is still time to turn back; stop further aggression towards Algrabad, and you can be assured of mercy, but if you don't stop attacking Algrabad, you will deal with us".

"This is not a declaration of war: you have a choice. It's not my choice; it's not the choice of Algrabad --- it is a decision meant solely for Higgins and Brown. Either repent, or be punished, there is nothing more than that".

"And this is not a threat. This is a pledge; a promise. This is not a promise of war, but a promise of loyalty. Unlike Higgins and Brown, Algrabad is not alone. That's all you need to know".

The Hadinian People's Armed Forces have been moved to Threat Level 2 (imminent threat of war), in the wake of this declaration. Strangely, High Envoy Nico Hass has not ordered troops to move out into the affected area: a courtesy to Higgins and Brown, perhaps, given the still-existent possibility of Higgins and Brown standing down.

Stranger still, the approval of military force in the Buffer Zone (conditional on Higgins and Brown failing to stand down), was unanimously approved by all members of the Council of Patricians. Many expected Envoy Fiete Nikastro of Unare to encourage a more pacifistic view, and his words on the decision were quite striking.

"As a member-state of UNCA, we are bound to provide for mutual defense, just as other UNCA member-states would do for us if we were in such a situation. The Algrabadi people have indeed suffered much, needlessly, with no sign of their neighbor on the other sound of the Buffer Zone accepting a less inhumane resolution. The High-Envoy's high-spirited declaration was a declaration of our commitment to our allies; if it were one merely of war, there would be no room for Higgins and Brown to take the peaceful route --- an option that it still has. As unfortunate as this situation may seem, it is by no means unjustifiable".

When asked about Nui-ta's course of action shifting towards non-intervention, Envoy Nikastro expressed some relief, saying that he was "glad that there's still some evidence of sanity in other parts of the world".
Just so you know, this nation, in character, is a highly sexist, highly theocratic, and highly authoritarian state. (Though under the new guy, it seems to be improving a little).

I disagree with a lot of what this nation stands for. It was invented for its intrigue and ample opportunities for satire, not for its ideals.

The Kenilerth Chronicle

10 Soldiers Killed in Buffer Zone Battle with Algrabadi "Secret Army", Algrabad expells diplomats.
A botched raid to eradicate military stockpiles in civilian areas has left 10 Higgins-Brownite soldiers dead and nearly 2 dozen wounded in a street battle with Algrabadi intelligence agents, Aljaysh Alssamit. The militants ambushed a century of Higgins-Brownite soldiers from the 18th (666) Regiment, who were conducting a raid on the town of Ramblus.

The battle in the town, which resulted in dozens of Algrabadi militant deaths, has been condemned by the Algrabadi government, who described it as illegal and murderous. An RAF spokesman, Submiltier Dale Milton, has refuted the claims:

"The Treaty provisions explicitly forbid Algrabad from quartering or stockpiling weapons or military equipment in residential areas. This is a key provision to preserve military and civil stability in the zone.

Last night's raid was conducted in the face of illegal activity by Aljaysh Alssamit. We received intelligence that AA had been moving weapons into the town, smuggling them through Higgins-Brownite checkpoints and presumably passing through Algrabadi checkpoints unhindered. We undertook a necessary operation to maintain operational stability in the area, whereupon our troops were ambushed and attacked."

Algrabadi sources maintain that a military installation outside the town was destroyed, and all inhabitants killed, before the raid. The RAF has described the accusation as one relating to tactics, which they would not divulge information in relation to.

Despite the deaths - we cannot report on the names of the dead for now - the RAF have confirmed that the operation was a success, with all weapons stockpiles in the area being destroyed, as well as a military installation.

This morning, the Algrabadi government sent strong remonstrances to their counterparts in Michaelstown, and expelled the Higgins-Brownite diplomatic mission. Similarly, they recalled the Algrabadi ambassador and staff. Algrabad's bold decision has been seen by some commentators as confirmation that they are now confident of assistance from UNCA allies in the event of increased hostilities.

President Henrietta J.W. has not commented on the attacks. Commissioner Fulbrít has labelled the breaking off of diplomatic ties as "regretable and avoidable", blaming the Algrabadi government and their allies for overreacting. He too described last night's operation as being completely expected under the terms of the treaty.

Enterprise Assistance Bill Defeated! Barker resigns, Prime Minister and DPMs in Crisis Talks.
The left of the RSD have rebelled against the government in large numbers, with 41 RSD Hoindopors voting against their own Deputy Leader's bill in the Hoindopo. Minister Sarah Barker was due to resign as Minister following the bill's passage, but has instead resigned following its defeat.

Liberal leader and 1st Deputy Prime Minister Lexi Spencer has met with Prime Minister Akimoto Kumiko to discuss the fallout of the bill's defeat. He had earlier described it as "the most serious symptom of a deep illness at the heart of the RSD." With the government majority now looking completely unreliable, Spencer's advisors are reportedly suggesting that now may be the time to pull the plug on the current Ministry, which has already experienced a major reshuffle. Tensions between RSD and Liberal Ministers are now reported to be at an all-time high, as Liberals refuse to make alterations to the agreed agenda that might satisfy the "Mortenite" wing of the RSD caucus.

The bill's defeat is made all the more surprising by the number of Sarah Barker's allies to vote against it. In the recently abandoned leadership contest, Barker was deemed to be the more leftwing candidate between herself and Justin Powers, but now it would seem that she has lost support among the left for her actions in that campaign.

Justin Powers has called the result of the vote a "catastrophe for the caucus" and has undertaken to "get these people into a room and hash out a new understanding". Júlian Mánard, 3rd Deputy PM, has been meeting regularly with the left and sources close to him reported that the vote wouldn't have been lost if Powers or the Ministry had accepted even minor amendments, or brought Kent Morton into unity discussions earlier.

Prime Minister Akimoto is now said to be considering her position very carefully. She met directly with members of the caucus before the vote was held, but was unable to promise any changes to the bill or the government agenda. Her only reason for staying in office now, sources report, is that she does not believe Justin Powers and Lexi Spencer could be elected by the Hoindopo to continue the coalition.

The controversy comes as the Constitutional Convention votes on whether or not to allow "snap" Hoindopal elections in the future.

Some amendments had been put to the bill from the United Left Front and leftist members of the Republican Social Democrats, but these were unsupported both by the remaining government parties, and the NRL, National and F.U.N. opposition parties.

National Party Leader Daniel Fox has described the situation as "completely untenable. We need a new government now, and I think the Liberals are starting to realise it."

Morde Rally Turns to Violent Chaos
An F.U.N. rally in the border town of Athboi turned violent yesterday as National Party and Front for a United Nation activists stormed clashed. National Party Hoindopor Gregor Lenihan stormed the stage as Todd Morde was about to be introduced, and, despite heavy security, took to the microphone to accuse the FUN of allying with the communistic Algrabadi regime. Lenihan's allegations centered on the FUN's connection to the Seglandic governing party, Segland being the founding member of the UNCA.

An all-out brawl in Rippon Square, the location of the rally, was broken up only by the arrival of military police to back up the local police service.

24 people later reported to local hospitals or were cared for in police stations, with 1 of them seriously injured. 45 arrests were made, with the vast majority being released with a caution soon after.

New Poll: NRL, ULF up. RSD, Nats down.
A new national opinion poll by the RAN/DOM polling agency has seen the Republican Social Democrats suffer severely for their current infighting. The main beneficiaries appear to be the United Left Front and the new right-wing opposition party, the National, Republican & Liberal Party. The National Party, from whom some of the NRLP split off, has also seen a minor decline. Leader Daniel Fox blamed it on "the media ignoring us" since the split "and concentrating on scandals elsewhere". Other government party's support levels remain consistent, as does the far-right FUN's.

Henrietta Hits Back!

She faces criticism from the Left and the Right for not doing exactly as they'd like, but Henrietta J. W. has steered the ship of state through the mirky waters of international chaos better than her predecessors did or her detractors would.
Interview by Jef E. T.

Algrabad have cut all diplomatic ties after an altercation in which 10 Higgins-Brownite soldiers, and a number of Algrabadis, died. Who is to blame for all of this?

I'm not saying that we're rosy clean, but the treaty was signed on the understanding that Algrabadi resettlement in the area was to be peaceful. Allowing the Algrabadi military to have a presence, was, in my view, a mistake of my predecessors, but was again agreed to on the understanding that they would have a policing role, and could counter any violence that might erupt between Algrabadi and Higgins-Brownite settlers.

Now what we're seeing is the Algrabadis militarising the civilian areas, barring access for our settlers to some areas, and, crucially, attacking our soldiers when they enforce the treaty. We can no longer trust the Algrabadi Military or the Algrabadi government in the Buffer Zone. Simply put, they need to desist in these actions and come back to the table.

Do you think we should take back control of the Buffer Zone. How would you go about it?

I believe that Algrabadi military presence in the zone should be revisited, and that should be achieved by a revision of the treaty, with Algrabad at the table.

Of course, you talk about control. We are currently in control, and asserting that control, in our operations in the area. The Algrabadi Military has not engaged us, it is small groups of militants who must be removed from the area by us, since the Algrabadi's are not doing it.

Will that mean military conflict? All-out war?

No. We are doing what we can to maintain a stable and safe situation for us and in the Buffer Zone. We have told Algrabad time and again that the future of the Buffer Zone must be decided by the pen, not the sword.

The Far-Right are calling you a coward for not ripping up Treacy's Treaty as soon as you were elected. What do you have to say to them?

I was elected, they weren't, because the country knew that to do that would plunge us straight into an all-out war. We can achieve our objectives without that.

Some voices are calling for an alliance with Nui-ta, or to join the Nui-Ra block. Some are saying we should keep out of it. You were elected as an isolationist, but then, Algrabad was isolated then. Have things changed?

Things have changed, but I would not be tempted to join a block. Instead, I say to the Nui-tan government, look our joint threats. Communists, fascists, theocrats. These nations want to stamp us out because we offer their downtrodden an alternative vision, a better life. We are the contradiction to their crazed doctrines.

We cannot afford to allow each other to be annihilated, and therefore, there must be some partnership.

The Nui-tan Prime Minister seems to believe we are isolating ourselves?

Prime Minister Medici has, I believe, been shaken by the sometimes-violent nature of our altercations in the buffer zone. Higgins & Brown believes these to be acts of self-defence, but I know that in Nui-ta they have a different perspective. I think it is an incorrect perspective. I think Prime Minister Medici should come and visit us, and learn more about the situation. But I cannot blame him, the international understanding of the situation is rarely accurate. Until recently, for instance, Segland would've agreed with the FUN's assertion that the Buffer Zone and even Tadnam territory should be cleared of Arabic persons. That is one extreme, and now they have taken the other, that the zone is Algrabad's by right. They've gone from one extreme to the other. Nui-ta, however, seems to believe that the Zone is divided on the basis of sovereignty. It isn't, it is jointly settled by treaty, and that treaty is being breached by the Algrabadis in alarming frequency.

Are Radiatia our allies?

I wish they were, but, alas, they are a great superpower, and we are a humble nation with not so much as an 'e' in our name.

Lastly, a cheeky question for National Party members. The leader of the party in the realm of domestic politics, Daniel Fox, is struggling in the polls. What words of advice do you have for him and the Hoindopal caucus? Do you see the Fox-Rabin rift being healed?

He is doing a great job, and he should stick with it. I don't want to comment on the Hoindopal situation as I don't think it appropriate, but the NRL split appeared to me to be a very disloyal stab in the back of the party, not just Mr. Fox. The public will see that, I think, and Daniel is acting as a commanding and sensible presence in the opposition.

Do you think Prime Minister Akimoto's Ministry will hold together much longer?

Now, that really would be inappropriate. As President, the fate of the domestic government is not mine to comment on. I am happy to work with Prime Minister Akimoto and her Ministers, and I would happily work with any Prime Minister elected by the Hoindopo, at any time.

FEDERAL ASSEMBLY PASSES ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT
GREGORI FYODEROV BECOMES FIRST RADIATIAN PRESIDENT TO BE IMPEACHED

January 28th LET 57 Last updated 19:44 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

BREAKING NEWS
The Federal Assembly has passed a resolution which sees President Gregori Fyoderov impeached for "Gross abuse of power" and "Obstruction of justice".
Image
Gregori Fyoderov has become the first Radiatian President in history to be impeached

After two days of debate, the Liberal-Conservative Party controlled Federal Assembly voted by a massive margin of 298 votes to 111 to pass A.Res.116 - a resolution which formally impeaches President Fyoderov of Gross Abuse of Power and Obstruction of Justice.

All 201 Social Democratic MPs voted in favour of the bill, and were joined by 97 Liberal-Conservatives including Majority Leader Tyler Vasilev [LCP - Alayenia 45th district] who spoke openly about his "sense of betrayal".

"There is no doubting that President Fyoderov is in many ways one of this country's greatest leaders. The economy is strong, he has contributed to a more peaceful world and riding on him are the hopes and dreams of millions of Radiatians, myself included," He said. "That's why it grieves me so much to have to vote in favour of this resolution. President Fyoderov has been a friend of mine for a long time, but I think I speak for many Radiatians when I say that I feel an overwhelming sense of betrayal."

The resolution comes following speculation and mounting evidence that the President ordered R-SOD agents to assassinate his ex wife and attempt to cover it up to look like an accident.

As the scandal has continued, Fyoderov's approval ratings have fallen from 61% to - according to one poll - only 8%, although the President has consistently denied that there was ever a plot to kill his ex wife.

Following the passage of the resolution, the articles were delivered to the Senate where it is expected to lead to what many are already calling "The Trial of the Century".

While the Federal Assembly's decision to impeach President Fyoderov sees him merely charged with a crime, it will take a two-thirds majority of the Senate to see him convicted and removed from office.

Chief Justice Tobias Kneib is expected to open the Senate trial tomorrow.

President Fyoderov emphatically denied all allegations against him in a televised statement.

"There has been a lot of talk about conspiracy over the last few days and allegations that I was involved in some kind of conspiracy," He said. "Well, let me make this as clear as I possibly can: There is only one conspiracy, and I am the victim not the perpetrator. It is a socialist conspiracy designed to undermine my Presidency, undermine the stability of the Radiatian Federation and thereby undermine the stability of Noctur.

"I urge all Radiatians to ignore the circus of slander and libel, because this nation has more important issues to deal with."

FEDERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION 116, 14th FEDERAL PARLIAMENT, FIRST SESSION

PARLIAMENT OF THE RADIATIAN FEDERATION

IN THE FEDERAL ASSEMBLY

January 28, LET 57

RESOLVED, that GREGORI MAYNARD FYODEROV, President of the Radiatian Federation, is impeached in accordance with Article III, Clause 5 of the Constitution of the Radiatian Federation and that the following articles be exhibited to the Federal Senate:

ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT EXHIBITED BY THE FEDERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE RADIATIAN FEDERATION IN THE NAME OF ITSELF AND OF ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE RADIATIAN FEDERATION, AGAINST GREGORI MAYNARD FYODEROV, PRESIDENT OF THE RADIATIAN FEDERATION, IN MAINTENANCE AND SUPPORT OF ITS IMPEACHMENT AGAINST HIM.

In his conduct of the office of President of the Radiatian Federation, GREGORI MAYNARD FYODEROV, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the Radiatian Federation and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the Radiatian Federation, and in violation of his constitutional duty to defend the values of individualism and efficiency, has prevented, obstructed, and impeded the administration of justice, in that:

On January 18th, LET 57, First Lady PATRICIA FYODEROV, a citizen of the Radiatian Federation, was unlawfully assassinated by agents of the Radiatian Special Operations Division. Prior thereto, Gregori Maynard Fyoderov using the powers of his high office, had ordered this assassination to be carried out in secret and engaged in plans to protect the guilty and impede any independent investigation into the matter.

Furthermore this action violated the constitutional rights of a Radiatian Citizen and has undermined the integrity of the office of the President of the Radiatian Federation.

Accordingly, the conduct of Gregori Maynard Fyoderov warrants his impeachment, trial and removal from office.

Speaker of the Federal Assembly

Attest:

Clerk.

CRATAAN ELECTION: RIGHT-WING MOVEMENT TO ENDANGER GRAND COALITION
Libertarian Party to grow significantly - both LIBERTY and Progressives continue to lose

by Markus Vasquez, CRANN News Team
CRATA CITY, CAD, CRATA
Political analyst David Fiedler calls the movement the "end of an era" - while millions of Crataans will vote next month, the established parties are in free fall
Image
Parliament during session.

It wasn't enough: Swen Thalberg, party leader of LIBERTY, admitted in a press conference in the party headquarters in Crata City that he couldn't stop the party from plummeting in the polls. Thalberg had replaced former chancellor King four years ago when the party was beginning to feel the ramifications of their ongoing feud with their coalition partner, the Progressive Party, over plans to arm the Crataan Humanitarian Aid Forces. When former leader of CHAF Janna Adler accused LIBERTY of risking Crataan lifes in order to gain public support, LIBERTY became increasingly devided between those supporting a military buildup and those staunchly supporting the Enduring Peace Act - the act that had de facto abolished armed forces. Both LIBERTY and the Progressive Party had lost public support in the LET 53 election, but were still able to remain the ruling parties. But according to Fiedler, this may not hold true in LET 57.

According to the Crataan University of National Politics, LIBERTY will recieve 187 seats, 21 less than in LET 53. The Progressives are expected to lose 10 seats, recieving 141 seats. Also losing are the Civillian Party (-2 seats) and the Green Party (-7). The big winners: Right- and far-right political parties. The newly founded Libertarian Party is expected to recieve 51 (+21) seats, the Conservative Party 117 (+23) and the National Front 4 (+3). And the trend continues: While a LIBERTY/Progressive coalition government would currently still hold a majority in parliament with 328 out of 600 seats, polls in multiple states have shown a lot less support for such a constellation.

"In times when Crata has to realize it is threatened by the UNCA, the citizens are beginning to question what would happen if military support from other nations were to run out. And this isn't too far-fetched, either: Both the Radiatian Federation and Nui-ta have criticised the Federal Republic greatly before, claiming Crata needed to defend itself" says Fiedler. "This isn't about putting together a massive army, this is about keeping Crata safe from external as well as internal threats and about restoring our reputation to our allies abroad. Saying this shouldn't be considered an outlandish claim. You may or may not like what the polls show, but it seems obvious that the Crataan citizens aren't happy with the way the whole affair is being handled right now."

The Crataan Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is alarmed about the rise of far-right political movements such as the rise of the National Front (FRONT). It does, however not see any imminent threat. "While the National Front is on our watchlist and their rise is worrying, the movement is nowhere near gaining political power" it said in a statement yesterday. "We trust in the Crataan people to make the right choice."

More Election LET57 >>>

What coalitions are possible?
  • The Grand Coalition (LIBERTY/Progressive): While not popular, if the general election were to be held today the Grand Coalition could stay in power. Expected 328 seats.
  • The Two-Plus-Two (LIBERTY/Progressive/Green/Civillian): It's unlikely the Green and Civillian Party will both want to be in a coalition with LIBERTY. Expected 410 seats.
  • The Conservative Network (Conservatives/Libertarians/FRONT): All parties have stated they would work together, but they still need seats. Expected 172 seats.

SENATE VOTES TO CONVICT
GREGORI FYODEROV REMOVED FROM OFFICE; NOW FACES MURDER CHARGE

January 30th LET 57 Last updated 19:30 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

BREAKING NEWS
The Radiatian Federal Senate has voted by a margin of 60 to 14 to convict Gregori Fyoderov of Gross Abuse of Power and remove him from office.

Image
President Gregori Fyoderov openly wept after being impeached and removed from office for Gross Abuse of Power.

President Fyoderov was represented by 12 lawyers, led by Andrea Jund, the President's legal counsel, in a two day closed door Senate trial presided over by Chief Justice Tobias Kneib.

At the beginning of the trial, Kneib urged Senators to vote "not as politicians along party lines, but as the protectors of justice and democracy."

The trial has been described as the most dramatic two days in Radiatia since the fall of communism, with the President charged with and questioned over allegations he used his office to order the assassination of his former wife.

The trial contained testimony from high ranking R-SOD officials, who confirmed that all Presidents get "two free kills", but that President Fyoderov had already used both up when ordering the assassination.

Also included were text messages reportedly from the President, but using a specifically bought phone so as not to arouse suspicion. The phone in question was found to have had the President's fingerprints on it.

In the end, only 14 Senators voted that the President was "innocent", all of whom were Liberal-Conservatives. The remainder put aside party loyalty in a Senate which is currently evenly split between both parties - although Vice President Angela Pavlovic was prohibited from casting a tie-breaking vote if necessary, or of even being present at the hearing.

60 Senators from both parties voted to convict Fyoderov - four above the necessary two thirds majority to remove him from office.

"I knew the President was guilty of this crime, long before he killed his wife!" Said Senator Freddie Traus [SDU - Bahamatsu]. "So, what was he being charged with again?"

Senate Majority Leader Iiro Pekkanen [LCP - Eldura], who voted to convict the President, said that it was "probably the hardest thing I've ever had to do in politics. This was a great President, who committed an atrocious crime."

Senator Paul Winograd [LCP - Diifgrao] who was one of the 14 Senators to vote against removing the President from office said that it was a "miscarriage of justice".

"This entire thin' stinks o' politics - it's all been a set up. I don' believe in anythin' unless I sees it with me own eyes an' I ain't seen the body o' the First Lady which means I don' think she's really dead." He said.

Senate Minority Leader Josko Ivers [SDU - New Vashura] said that it was a "tragedy for the nation, but justice prevailed and it showed our system works."

Gregori Fyoderov now faces charges of conspiracy to murder at the federal court, a massive fall from grace for the man who was once Radiatia's most popular President.

At 14:12 Xerconia Standard Time, Angela Tamzen Pavlovic was sworn in as the seventh President of the Radiatian Federation.

ERICH YAKSEN RESIGNS OVER CONTROVERSIAL CRATA COMMENT
POLITICAL NEWCOMER ALEXEI HAUSSMANN NAMED SUCCESSOR

Image
Yaksen giving address in which he announced his resignation

After making a highly controversial statement on CONFERO claiming that Crata could be occupied by Segland in "a matter of days", Erich Yaksen has resigned as Minister of Liaison.

One of the most powerful members of the Demarchist Party has fallen, ironically in a matter of days, to the status of a disgraced former politician. The ordeal is admittedly unusual considering that Segland has never been supportive of Crata in the past, but many pundits are pointing to a racial theory increasingly popular among ordinary Seglanders, which asserts the superiority of Oriensian Germanic peoples.

First, however, the statement itself must be analyzed. Yaksen's choice of the word "cuckold" to describe the Crataans may have provoked the ire of Herbert Huber, the Speaker of the Relmsenat, whose wife infamously had an affair in 2011 with multiple other men. Huber and Yaksen have had some disagreements in the past, most notably over the issue of Merrina, with whom the Speaker desires an alliance. It would not be a stretch to assume that Huber had a hand in the removal of Yaksen from office.

A more subtle blunder in the former minister's statement was his bombastic proclamation of military superiority. This contrasts with Chancellor Mueller's much more understated policy of "don't say it, do it". Outright declarations of hostility from Mueller are rare, but it is clear from things like the building of bases in Hadin that the chancellor is positioning Segland for global military domination.

Mueller made his own response to Yaksen's Crata comment, saying, "The Liaison Minister's unprovoked and jingoistic threat to our peaceful neighbors cannot be condoned, and there will be consequences for it."

Said consequences turned out to be severe for Yaksen, who has lost favor with the NatSoc establishment and been replaced by Alexei Haussmann, a 38-year-old whose meteoric rise to power is rooted in his stellar success as director of the GHB.

Haussmann, who is reminiscent of a young Hugo Nimitz, seems to be a personal favorite of Chancellor Mueller. There was no delay between Erich Yaksen's resignation and Alexei Haussmann's cancellarial appointment to the helm of the Ministry of Liaison. Wondering why he is so liked by the chancellor? Look no further than UNCA.

In many ways, Haussmann is the unsung driving force behind the foundation of the Axis. Under his leadership, the GHB fostered the development of Segland-friendly ideologies worldwide. He made countless covert visits to countries that were contemplating alignment with Segland, months before the official start of negotiations with Hadin. Even the strategies of Rupert Specht, the Seglandic ambassador to UNCA, have been largely informed by Haussmann's advice.

Chancellor Mueller knows talent when he sees it, and Haussmann's performance as a leader in foreign intelligence has duly impressed him. Whether this success in the intelligence field translates to an effective political career, though, remains to be seen.

And despite the obvious benefits posed by increased Seglandic influence, UNCA is a double-edged sword. Some Seglanders are uncomfortable with an alliance with Algrabad, and as a result, new racial views are gaining ground.

It is for this reason that so many took offense at Erich Yaksen's negative characterization of Crata. The Crataans, like Seglanders, are a primarily Germanic people with proud origins in Terra Oriens. It makes sense that the people of Segland reject the recent closeness with Algrabad, preferring more familiar nationalities such as Merrinans and Crataans.

In an unstable Noctur, it will be intriguing to see how Haussmann interacts with the other nations of the world, and if his actions will reflect the recent ideologies of racial superiority being espoused by many Seglanders.

NOCTUR'S MOST POWERFUL MAN... IS A WOMAN
PRESIDENT PAVLOVIC WEIGHS OPTIONS

February 2nd LET 57 Last updated 15:24 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

XERCONIA, FCT
As the nation reels from the shock of the Fyoderov impeachment, the final surprise in the saga has come in the form of Angela Pavlovic unexpectedly becoming Radiatia's first female President.
Image
President Angela Pavlovic

Since being unceremoniously sworn in outside the Senate chamber, President Pavlovic has spent the last two days coming to terms with the responsibility that now lies on her shoulders, and making plans for what her administration will bring.

The President has promised that there will be 'no pardon' for her predecessor if he is found guilty of murder, stating that her first goal in office will be to reveal that "the law applies to all".

Meanwhile speculation is building over who will stay and who will go as she prepares to appoint a new cabinet, intended to signify a departure from the Fyoderov Administration and distance herself from her predecessor in the minds of the public, while at the same time continuing the basic policy direction that made the former President so popular with the public - a fine balancing act.

The biggest question mark hangs over just who she will appoint as her Vice President, with absolutely no clear frontrunners having emerged. Some have speculated that she may choose a senior member of the Fyoderov Cabinet such as Defence Minister and former LCP Presidential candidate Kartsy Nepula - a decision which might give her legitimacy among the more hardline elements of the LCP base despite reports that Pavlovic and Nepula "do not get on well".

Libertarian former Premier of Alayenia Vladimir Perry has also been named as a possibility - although his reputation for 'extremism' could be risky to a President who will be doing all she can to avoid rocking the boat.

One source close to the President said he suspected that she would probably choose competency over electability.

"Expect it to be someone you've never heard of - a backroom technocrat. There's no saying that she's even going to run in LET 60 and even if she does, she can always choose a new running mate. For now, she's going to go for substance over style."

Appointing a Vice President will be exceptionally important if Pavlovic hopes to get anything through Parliament - such as controversial tariff reduction legislation. With the Senate currently split evenly between both parties, the tie-breaking vote of a Vice President becomes a necessity.

However while the personalities are expected to change as Pavlovic sets up her administration, the policies are unlikely to.

"She'll continue with the Fyoderov Administration's policies, although her leadership style is already markedly different. Pavlovic is much more open, sociable and accessible than her predecessor. She's also more of a consensus builder."

The main obstacles facing the Pavlovic Presidency include a sense that she is somehow illegitimate in having ascended to the position, residual sexism and the memories of those who are yet to forgive her for the federal government shutdown ten years ago.

"Even if you believe Keldon Silviu was an awful President, he would have been a much better President had it not been for the way that Angela Pavlovic undermined him at every turn. Radiatians are unlikely to forget such a slight."

President Pavlovic does have very strong foreign policy credentials, having been Deputy Chairwoman of the Humanitarian League before her entry into national politics. Having risen through the ranks of both chambers of the legislature, Pavlovic is also someone who clearly has a deep legal knowledge and who knows how to write a budget. All of these factors point to her being a very competent President.

In her first televised address to a broken nation last night, President Pavlovic called for "a time of healing" and spoke of the sense of betrayal and disillusionment that the Radiatian people no doubt were feeling.

"During this difficult time for our nation, it is important not to slip into the old ways or to start questioning democracy," She said. "If anything this incident shows our system works - and our constitution protects us from villainy and tyranny.

"We must always remember that we are Radiatians. We cannot allow such a challenge to reduce our efficiency."

The President went on to talk about the international situation, and though she affirmed that there would be no change in the "Fyoderov doctrine", she committed to holding talks with the leaders of Nui-ta, Higgins and Brown, Conpatraia and Poldania.

"It is important that our friends and allies understand that Radiatia will always stand with them, even if in this case it means standing between them and a Noctur-wide war."

Pavlovic is expected to unveil her new Cabinet and choice of Vice President by the end of the week.

OPINION: THE TRAGEDY OF GREGORI FYODEROV

BY DR. BORIS KAHLER
Gregori Maynard Fyoderov had all the ingredients to have been Radiatia's greatest ever President. At one time he was more popular than Traiyan Silviu. So where did it all go wrong?
Image
Former President Gregori Fyoderov

From a young age, Gregori Fyoderov showed immense political talent - an MP by age 26, and later the youngest cabinet minister in history - no one who crossed paths with him could deny his brilliance.

He was fierce in debate - not unlike his mentor, the late Soden Larssen, and he knew how to charm the media and later the public despite privately being an introvert who shunned the limelight.

He was resilient too - suffering plenty of hard knocks, from losing the Conservative Party leadership race in LET 43, to the loss of the Presidential election in LET 44, and yet continued on anyway to later win the largest landslide in Radiatian history.

It wasn't his policies that were his fall from grace - by all accounts, he is the most liberal President Radiatia has ever had and someone with the rare gift of being able to appeal to both the left and the right.

In the end it came down to psychology - a troubled upbringing by a single mother as an only child - his father having been shot down in the Isthmus War when Fyoderov was an infant, bullied terribly in school and plagued by a combination of paranoia and a victim mentality: Fyoderov believed the world was out to get him.

Not only that, sources close to him said that he was never able to feel happy with his achievements, achievements that were only to gain the approval he had sought for so long.

One aide said that the President actually fell into something of a depression following his record landslide win in LET 56 - even while celebrating in public. No matter how good things were, they were never enough for him.

And Fyoderov was ruthless to his enemies - with even the smallest of infractions known to gain his disdain, such was his paranoia. While the details of his relationship with his wife are not yet known, after 30 years of marriage Fyoderov no doubt felt betrayed in some way and sought revenge using the tools at his disposal.

The rest is history. He was overpowered by his inner demons.

Gregori Fyoderov could have been Radiatia's greatest President. Instead he was martyred to his own failings as a human being and will probably be remembered forever more as a tragic figure.

Kumiko Walks
Prime Minister Akimoto resigns after months of instability and uncertainty.

Akimoto Walks: Prime Minister
Akimoto entering the public gathering
at which she announced her resignation.
The seep divisions and dysfunction within the Republican Social Democrats and the wider government coalition finally claimed the Prime Minister as a victim this morning. Akimoto Kumiko, Prime Minister since 169 IE, who also served as Acting Prime Minister for Peter Davis and as his successor, announced her immediate resignation in her home territory of Set at a public gathering in the territorial capital of Okanaka. Akimoto Kumiko was the first Setite politician to serve as Prime Minister, and only the 8th to serve in the Executive at all.

The Prime Minister told the country: "It is with deep regret and sorrow in my heart, but knowing it to be the right thing to do, that I announced the immediate cessation of my term as Prime Minister. This is a necessary step in the current political climate. There are deep divisions within my own party - divisions I hoped would be healed with a new leader - and an unclear path for our legislators. In these recent weeks, I have done my utmost to maintain the broad support of the Hoindopo.

"The political situation is such that there are many options ahead for the Hoindopo, but none are easy. I have attempted to direct those who are discontent to a path that would save the Ministry, but it has not been successful. And I have attempted, too, to convey their genuine concerns and worries, both to their own party leadership, and to my coalition partners. Neither have been successful.

"Though I received personal support; though there has been ample support for my office, there is only confusion and discontent with regard to the current government programme. The two are not independent of each other. Until today I have had the pleasure to lead a government, but without that government and the prospect of its programme being fulfilled, I am merely an occupant of an office, a ghost on a chair.

"I will not remain a ghost on a chair. I will not remain a go-between between Hoindopal factions. I will not lead when none follow. The Hoindopo has not questioned my position formally, but it is clear to me that effective confidence in this Ministry is at such a low level that our ability to pass budgets, to fulfill our programme, or to effectively lead, is too far diminished for our positions to remain tenable.

"I therefore this morning submitted my resignation to the Chairperson of the Hoindopo and the First Justice of the Procourt.

"I ask my supporters for their prayers and devotions this time. I intend now to return to the Hoindopo as a legislator, and to fully participate in the discussions that we will have before electing a new Prime Minister within 6 weeks. Later today, the Executive will hold its first meeting to appoint an interim Prime Minister, and I will support that individual fully."

There was some confusion initially as to whether the Prime Minister - who gave her speech in the Setite tongue - had resigned or merely suspended her office (essentially taking indefinite leave, as Prime Ministers may do). However, both her office and the office of the First Justice of the Procourt both confirmed that she had in fact resigned entirely from the position of Prime Minister.

Cumulatively, Akimoto has spent over 7 years in the office of Prime Minister, at 3 different times. Her first and second terms were both interim appointments during the illness of then-Prime Minister Peter Davis. Davis resigned while on leave during Akimoto's 2nd term, and she was finally elected as Prime Minister in her own right on November 11, 158<small>IE</small>. However, her RSD and the wider left lost the 160 Hoindopal Election, and Diane McKenna succeeded her as Prime Minister. After a second loss, this time to Bert Forster, in 163 <small>IE</small>, Akimoto lost the leadership of the RSD and was succeeded by Denis O'Callaghan. She returned to frontline politics as the Deputy Leader of the RSD after the 166 Hoindopal election - the 3rd defeat in a row for the left.

Divisions between herself and O'Callaghan led her to challenge him for the leadership in the 168-9 primaries, winning back the leadership of her party, and going on to defeat Ethel Meaney's deflated government in an election campaign that saw "Kumiko Fever" sweep young voters.

Initially becoming Prime Minister ahead of a coalition of the left (RSD-Green-ULF), she then reached across the recent left-right divide before the last election, negotiating a joint manifesto with the Liberal Party in the face of rising poll numbers for the far-right FUN.

The "Popular Front" Ministry has not, however, achieved either its goal of gaining support from disaffected FUN supporters, nor has it been good for the left. With non-partisan Minister-to-the-Treasury David Lamont, the Executive has taken a drastically different fiscal strategy. Akimoto had to reorganise the Ministry last year in an episode that also saw the United Left Front withdraw their participation. However, the Liberals demanded Lamont stay, and he did. Akimoto also resigned as Party Leader, to allow the RSD to pick a new leader and establish a clear path. However, the party neither picked a leader (Justin Powers won by default), nor chose a clear path.

Increasingly in recent weeks, Akimoto's time has been taken up with attempting to address the concerns of rebel RSD Hoindopors, to the extent that Executive Meetings have been re-arranged to suit her strained schedule. Commentators noted as early as last month that the physical strain of the situation was beginning to show.

Is this the end of Akimoto Kumiko, however? . She has come back before, and another 9 year gap would see her at 64 - hardly too old in the game of politics. She has also been touted as a potential President of Set Territory, but has always distanced herself from that position, deeming it too honourary.

Akimoto Kumiko is the mother of 2 children by her ex-husband, Abe Nafajuri. The couple have been seperated for 20 years. Her kids, Abe Wanatobi and Akimoto Minori, are 29 and 24 respectively.

But for now, attention will soon move to her successor. The Ministry will today appoint an interim Prime Minister from within its own ranks, and the Hoindopo has 6 weeks in which to elect a new Prime Minister in conclave. Akimoto may have thrown a real spanner in the works as it is not clear what majority could emerge to elect a Prime Minister without either faction of the RSD caucus, or the Liberal caucus, giving in on key sticking points.

And while the Premiership and the domestic Ministry have little or nothing to do with international affairs, the question must be raised, what problems will arise if war breaks out and a Prime Minister has yet been elected?

President Henrietta Announces Peace Initiative, Partial Withdrawal
Algrabadis invited to new summit.

RAF Commandos withdraw from "New" positions

Image
Op.Commando of 64th Bat, 666 Rgt, 6th Div, I Army Corps abandoning a "new" position.
President Henrietta J. W. has called for a bilateral summit with President Sara Sediqqa of Algrabad to re-evaluate the situation in the Buffer Zone and preserve peace between our nations.

As a preliminary action and indicator of good faith, the President has withdrawn commandos of the 18th (666) Regiment, who had been deployed to "advanced", "new" and "temporary" positions in recent months. The recent flare up in tensions, and the emergence of powerful backers to Algrabad, seem to have convinced the President to back down.

However, she was keen to stress that no military personnel are leaving the Buffer Zone, only returning to the Treaty-Approved camps. Inside the Buffer Zone, the RAF still outnumber (and outgun) the Algrabadi Military, at a scale of 4-to-1.

No immediate response to the invitation was issued from Algrabad, where recent reports have suggested a build-up of military force close to the Buffer Zone in anticipation of tensions reaching new highs. Responding to questions from the international press, a Socialist Revolutionary Party spokesperson today said that President Sediqqa is attending sessions of the Presidential cabinets today as scheduled.

There is little clarity regarding the situation. In Higgins & Brown, reservists of the I Army Corps and IV Air Corps have been mobilised, as have the Regional Guards of Krásaul and Muken, the border regions. The Tadnam Territorial Guard, led by officers from other regions, has also been mobilised.

We spoke to Duadier [Private] Ben Fuller from Riverla about his thoughts on the mobilisation. Ben is an Air Assault reservist with the 30th Battalion, part of the 3rd Division in I Army Corps.

Peace Initiative sounds fine to me, but I don't trust the Algrabadi government. I supported the treaty, but they don't abide by it. That land is under our care because they almost destroyed our county 70 years ago. My grandfather lived in my hometown during that war. He served his country proudly, but when he came home, he found out it had been destroyed during the occupation. Never again, that's what I say.

I'm a Health and Safety Inspector by trade, so I've always found the Air Assault reserve to be a welcome kind of an outlet. If war does come, I'll have to make sure that Health and Safety instinct doesn't overcome the need to defend our country.

Asked what he meant by that, Fuller responded:

Well I've gotten into trouble for not wanting to run with my bayonet attached in case of causing injury. But, then, that's kind of the point.

FYODEROV SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON

February 3rd LET 57 Last updated 15:24 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

XERCONIA, FCT
Former President Gregori Fyoderov has been found guilty of second degree murder by a federal court and sentenced to ten years in prison.
Image
Disgraced former President Gregori Fyoderov has been sentenced to 10 years in jail

This marks the final low in the fall from grace of the man who had previously been Radiatia's most popular President, who was impeached last week and removed from office after evidence emerged that he had unlawfully ordered R-SOD to assassinate his ex wife.

Fyoderov has continued to maintain that the driver - an immigrant - was a terrorist and that he had to act "immediately" on this intelligence. No such intelligence was offered as evidence, and R-SOD confirmed that the order had been given months ago, with ample time for Fyoderov to inform the Covert Operations Committee.

Fyoderov was also found to have planned the murder in meticulous detail, with the intent of disguising it as an accident.

No investigation has been carried out into the murder of the driver of Patricia Fyoderov's vehicle, other than to confirm that he was not a Radiatian citizen.

"Investigating into the murder of someone who is not a Radiatian citizen is a waste of taxpayer's money. We just don't have the budget for that." Said an FPA spokesperson.

President Angela Pavlovic said there would be no pardon for her predecessor and that he would serve his full sentence "as a reminder that President or pauper, justice is for all in this country."

President Pavlovic has also announced a raft of measures aimed at ensuring similar events do not happen in future. Chief among those is the planned closure of R-SOD, and its replacement with two new agencies according to a new Presidential Commission.

The new President is yet to announce who she will be appointing her Vice President, and is yet to announce a new Cabinet but is expected to do so by the end of the week.

Lieidis wins, Democrats take plurality in Senate

The 2016 presidential election is over, with the second-round results showing that Senator María Cristina Lieidis has defeated incumbent President of the Republic Maia Ziortzá by a margin of over ten points.

The young Senator defeated her opponent 56-44, exceeding what pre-election polling had been reporting. Polling organizations Demoscopia and Encuestamos had indicated Lieidis winning 52%-48% and 53%-47% respectively, and Tu Voz had the election as a 50%-50% tossup.

"I have called María Cristina and offered my sincerest congratulations," outgoing President Ziortzá told supporters in San Sebastián/Donostia, Iruña[Note 1]. "This election was fought hard over the mighty principles that shape our nation. The people have spoken, and I hope that President-elect Lieidis will find the most success in her endeavors, for Conpatria's sake."

Mireia Belmonte of the Democrats is expected to succeed USD's Jorge Cadasne as the next President of the Government (referred to in this article as Prime Minister to differentiate with the President of the Republic), with her party having received 110 Senate seats. Even though the Democrats have only a plurality, Centrist leader Teresa Cunillera-Díaz has announced her party will abstain from the investiture vote to allow a government to be formed, a move commonly taken by the centrist party in recent Senate sessions.

Also worth mentioning was the entrance into the Senate of the far-right Popular Front (FP). FP has been growing in popularity exponentially as the international crises in Noctur worsen and media reports cause Conpatrians to fear, situations that FP has gain popularity and momentum from. Led by outspoken national conservative José García Sáez, FP has pledged to attempt and influence the new conservative Democratic government to impose strict anti-immigration and anti-refugee laws in anticipation for a war that FP says will soon begin across the Ocean. The polling trends show that FP is only becoming more popular, ever after they earned their 18 seats in the Senate of the Republic. Analysts suggest that if the election had been held a month later, FP would have upwards of 30 seats, which would likely have made them the third-largest party in the legislature.

2016 seems to have marked the end of the Liberal Party's (PL) influence on Conpatrian politics. Newly-elected leader Jorge Guerricaechevarría pledged to take the party further to the right-of-center, a move that seems to have backfired on the already-struggling party. Even respected former party leader Francisca Villalobos encouraged people to vote for the Centrist Party (PC) over the party that had once made her Prime Minister.

The election of Conpatria's second female President of the Republic and third female President of the Government have created another noteworthy piece of history. For the first time in Conpatrian history, each head of state and government is a woman. A record number of women were also elected to the Senate of the Republic, with women now making up for more than 45% of Senators.

On the same day as the Presidential and Senate elections, six of the states held internal elections for their state legislatures. Three states; Fortaleza-Albacete, Fortaleza y Soria, and Lugo; had their incumbent governments defeated by the Democrats. The sweeping victory left the Liberal Party in control of only one state, Logroño, which is expected to hold a state legislative election next year. Reelection is expected to be an uphill battle for PL in Logroño in 2017.

Algrabad Invades Buffer Zone in Night-Time Assault
Dozens of Commando and Infantry Positions Overwhelmed
Algrabadi President Assassinated Hours Before Invasion

Military Situtation Before Today:

MICHAELSTOWN DESK, MARIA FOLEY REPORTING
Michaelstown, Kings, Brown

At 2am local time, seven divisions of the Algrabadi Peoples' Army (APA) crossed the border into the Buffer Zone, well in breach of treaty conditions, and launched an assault on the eastermost Higgins-Brownite settlements and military installations. The invasion force consisted mainly of mechanised infantry and received heavy aerial support. The 1st District (Oulad and Oumdouil provinces) and much of the 2nd District (Bou Thadi province) have been entirely captured, and the invaders have reached the Higgins-Brownite border between Muken and the 5th District (Lizqueh province).

Algrabadi units quartered within the Buffer Zone in Treaty-approved bases appear to have launched surprise assaults with light infantry on nearby Higgins-Brownite bases, destroying equipment and inflicting heavy casualties. However, the bravery and skill of Operations and Strike Commandos in the Buffer Zone has in some cases led to Algrabadi retreats. Several pockets of resistance now exist, and in some cases the invasion has descended into small-scale inter-village battles.

At 5am, the Algrabadi Government finally issued a Declaration of War, of sorts, worded as a "Recognition of Hostilities", claiming Higgins-Brownite involvement in the apparent assasination of Algrabadi President Sara Sediqqa yesterday. The Socialist Revolutionary Party of Algrabad (SRP) claim that Sediqqa was shot by a Higgins-Brownite Paratrooper Sniper who had dropped into the Algrabadi capital of Al-Miki some time ago.

Sediqqa was shot in advance of a meeting of the country's Military Council. International observers believe that if the Algrabadi Constitution remains in force, then the Vice-Presidential Commission is now exercising the powers of the President. It includes Revolutionary Vice-President Azhari, Administrative Vice-President Jacir and Military Vice-President Canaan. Together, the three are considered to be a conservative nationalist grouping.

State Security have issued a statement refuting Algrabadi claims, and suggesting Sediqqa was assassinated as part of a coup by nationalists.

The state is scrambling to coordinate its response to the invasion. The town of Athboi, situated close to the border of Higgins & Brown with the Buffer Zone, has been placed under Martial Administration. The President has declared a National State of Emergency and a State of War with Algrabad. The entire Ist Army Corps - already put on a war footing - as been committed to the defence of the border and recapture of the Zone.

Yesterday the Buffer Zone quartered 5,400 Higgins-Brownite Republican Armed Forces (RAF) personnel, and 1,400 APA personnel. Today it is estimated that the APA have committed three-quarters of its mobilised force - about 110,000 personnel. The Ist Army Corps has just over half of that figure mobilised, about 60,000. Groupier Hoover leads the I Army Corps, and has spoken of his belief that they may be outnumbered, but they will not be outmaneuvered or outgunned against the "tactically, technically and morally inferior" APA.

Communications from the area are sketchy, but it appears that a pre-existing RAF plan to fall back to a pre-known line of resistance has been put into effect. Until such time as a traditional front can be established, military commentators suggest that the conflict will consist of bloody, arbitrary operations of attrition, in which those cut off from their supply chains will likely be defeated.

Military Sources confirmed that a panel of 3 Concourt judges has been flown from Carrigro to Michaelstown to assist the President in administering the war effort. A list of Constitutional exemptions that are already approved has already been published - several regional guards have been nationalised, a national draft approved, and the War Government Act has been put into effect. Júlian Mánard, appointed as Interim Prime Minister by the Executive a few days ago, has joined the "War Cabinet". The Hoindopo has begun steps to appoint a Representative Committee to take decisions for the domestic parliament in the event that it cannot meet. The Codena's Council of 12 have been moved to Army bases in Kings.

NAVAL MOBILISATION

The IIIrd and IVth Naval Corps have responded to the invasion promptly. Though some details are classified, we can reveal that the Buffer Ports in the 5th District (Lizqueh province) remain in RAF control, with the RAF Naval Corps re-supplying and providing artillery support there.

It is a different story in the 1st District (Oulad & Oumdouil provinces), where RAF Marines of the 2nd Marine Infantry Regiment, who were occupying coastal bases, were forced into a retreat by water. Depending on Algrabadi intentions, this leaves open the possibility of a direct invasion of Tadnam Territory.

AERIAL MOBILISATION

The Vth Air Corps began bombing raids of Algrabadi artillery and armoured targets within 20 minutes of the first alerts. Aerial battles have also taken place where Algrabadi air support have been intercepted.

HB2.4 is not aware of any Air Assault / Air Cavalry operations at this time.

CHANGING BATTLE LINES, GUERRILLA WARFARE

The Buffer Zone's military bases were spread around under the treaty so as to make the area "unoccupiable" or "uninvadable" as a turn-off to both sides. Any outbreak of hostilities is sure to mean that neighbouring bases immediately attack each other, or form guerrilla units. The dense rainforest setting of the Buffer Zone adds to this setting. These facts may aid RAF troops as they defend our nation from the sudden invasion from the east.

Since hostilities began early this morning, RAF sources have confirmed that some units are unaccounted for across the Buffer Zone, and that some skirmishes have even taken place between Arab and Higgins-Brownite settlers.

An RAF plan to fall back to a specific line of resistance has been put into effect, but for some advanced units, the slim possibility of survival if they stay put and defend their positions will be higher than if they attempt to push through the forest to their pre-approved rally points.

The I Army Corps, consisting of the 1st, 3rd and 6th Divisions, will be setting up and filling gaps in the Line of Resistance where they can, this paper understands.

However, the fact remains, that the APA have reached the border to the south, suggesting that the Line has already failed. The 6th and 12th Regiments have the responsibility to hold the border in that area.

HUGE NUMBER OF TROOPS

The APA, thought to have an overall manpower of about 175,000, has launched the largest land-based military operation in the area since the 2nd Algrabadi War, according to some early estimates. At east 6 different divisions of the APA have been identified by RAF sources as being involved.

The Republican Armed Forces, by comparison, have a strength approaching 110,000 personnel, but are thought to be much better equipped. Altgroupier Andrew Locke, the Commanding Officer and Chief of Staff of the RAF, has expressed his confidence in the RAF to "beat back and greatly injure" the invading Algrabadi People's Army.

RESERVISTS MOBILISED, NATIONAL DRAFT APPROVED

All Army, Naval and Air Corps reservists who have not already reported for duty have been ordered to mobilise by the President as Commander-In-Chief. The II Army Corps has yet to mobilise reserves and is appealing to reservists to report for duty within 24 hours.

The President has met with her National Commission and gained agreement for a National Draft. It is understood that the Concourt has agreed to a Draft under the "Carrigro Principles". The Carrigro Principles, set out by successive Constitutional Courts since the last Algrabadi War, maintain that the constitutional right not to be compelled to bear arms in the service of the state must be preserved at all times. A National Draft would thus require conscripts opting out of armed service to work in non-combat positions.

REFUGEES

Civilians fleeing the first day of battle have begun arriving in Regional Guard hospitals in Krásaul and Muken regions. Numbers are currently small, but with 1.2 million Higgins-Brownite civilians and 750,000+ Algrabadi residents in the Zone, the number is likely to increase. Some arriving at the hospitals are Algrabadi nationals, who are being interned on arrival by Order of the President.

Civilian casualties from the day's fighting are estimated to be high, as highly mobile combat units and disparate civilian columns - some of which are armed - make their way in different directions through the dense forest of the Buffer Zone.

UPDATES AS WE GET THEM

We here at HB2.4 will update you on the situation as we recieve information. However, our broadcasts are being monitored by the RAF to ensure that no sensitive information is released, and we are complying for the national good. The situation is not clear, and if you are in the area or have heard conflicting information, please get in touch.

We leave you with this, one of many personal accounts that have been sent to us today.

TESTIMONIAL OF ROSANNA CURTLIN
Ville Robedo, 3rd District, HIGGINS & BROWN BUFFER PROTECTORATE

The distant sounds of artillery and airstrikes awoke us all at about 2am, and within the hour they were getting louder. Our town is connected to an RAF Barracks and a Civil Patrol unit is also attached to the town. The barracks hosts Commandos of the 666 [Ed: 18th Regiment]. They left the Civil Patrol to set up town defences and headed east to advanced positions. We had no armour, only guns and barricades. We were told to leave but not to use the Lees road - the main road west. Anyway, I couldn't leave. My elderly mother can barely walk to the car. So walking west, uphill, through the rainforest, wasn't for us. My sons are both in the civil patrol. They're preparing for tank attacks. If we could take the car via another town, that would be ok, but at that stage no one seemed to know where the battle lines actually were.

We used to have a postal service run by the Arabs, but that went 2 years ago. That was the last bit of intercommunal connection we had. They never believed we should be here, but I've lived here since I was 14! We've been saying this would happen for years, but when the treaty was signed, I think that's when we really started to believe. None of us voted for Brian Treacy the 2nd time. Most of us voted for Francis, even if we disagreed with him on other things.

By about 8am the town was serving as headquarters for a new unit who had arrived to back up the 666 [Ed: Rosanna gave more details, but we cannot pass them on at this time]. At 9 the town's own air-raid sirens rang, but it was a mistake. An officer told me that if there were to be an airstrike on the town we wouldn't get the warning anyway. We are surrounded by rainforest, and though the barracks have a look-out tower, it is not tall enough. Sure enough, at noon - 10 hours after the initial booms in the distance - bombs started dropping to our north. We could see the clouds from the explosions. I don't know if the bombs were ours or the enemy's. Some Commandos returned later in the day [Ed: Redacted].

That was 6 hours ago. 3 hours ago we heard that APA were trying to surround the town. Then, at 4, there was an attack - a very small-scale assault by the soldiers from the nearest Arab base. There were a few hours of street-fighting as the APA got a foothold somewhere in the town. A grenade scarred the front of my house. We were in the back room, huddled under the kitchen table. For some reason the Arabs didn't have air support. My mother says their unit mustn't have been told the invasion was going to happen, that they seemed to be looking for somewhere safer to stay until their own units arrived. They might have simply been attempting to distract us. I don't know. We still can't use the Lees road, but the RAF have opened a channel for civilians that goes to [Ed: Redacted].

PAVLOVIC NAMES PERRY AS VICE PRESIDENT
PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF CABINET AND ADMINISTRATION

February 5th LET 57 Last updated 21:21 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

XERCONIA, FCT
President Angela Pavlovic has finally announced her cabinet today - including confirmation that former Alayenian Premier Vladimir Perry will be her Vice President.
Image
Vladimir Perry has been announced as Pavlovic's Vice President

Premier Perry will be subject to confirmation from the Senate before he can officially be sworn in as Vice President, while many new members of Pavlovic's cabinet will also need Senate confirmation.

Despite his ascendency to the Vice Presidency, a preliminary ruling by the Supreme Court has stated that, in accordance with the constitution, should President Pavlovic be unable to continue in her role, then the next President would be Speaker Bysse Goranov [LCP - Kerpruss All-state] according to the line of succession.

Premier Perry, who served as Premier of Alayenia for a single term from LET 40 - LET 44, is viewed as an unusual choice given his strong libertarian views. Premier Perry has run for President three times, and has something of a cult following for his libertarian views but is considered to be 'too extreme' to cater to mainstream tastes.

The President's decision is also considered unusual due to her decision not to 'balance the ticket' with a more conservative candidate - with many of the Liberal-Conservative base reportedly feeling uneasy with the advent of a woman President. Her choice of Perry shows that she will continue to push the same liberal agenda as her predecessor, Gregori Fyoderov.

Meanwhile, the formation of the Pavlovic Administration has seen several Fyoderov Administration officials booted out of their jobs, mainly as punishment for their roles in the assassination scandal. Pavlovic has reshuffled most of the Cabinet, including appointing a new Minister of Finance amid hints that Pavlovic supports a return to the Gold Standard.

The President has already intimated that she will be keeping a close eye on the economy - unlike Fyoderov - although she will also likely take an active role in foreign affairs too.

Crataan-born Foreign Affairs Minister Isaac Lichtenberg - widely considered to have been Gregori Fyoderov's closest confidant - has been dropped from Cabinet, although it is expected that Pavlovic intends to keep him around, having appointed him as her National Security Advisor.

Former Elduran Premier and LET 48 Presidential candidate Kärtsy Nepula has also been dropped as Defence Minister despite rumours that Pavlovic was considering him for Vice President.

Former Federal Minister of Social Welfare Yolona Reynolds becomes head of a new federal 'super-ministry', with Health, Education and Social Welfare now merged into a single "Social Services" Ministry, in acknowledgement of the fact that the federal government has a very limited role in the provision of such services.

Cabinet Pavlovic:

Vice President: Vladimir Perry
Minister of Defence: Roland Schultz
Minister of Foreign Affairs: Quintin Holzer
Minister of Finance: Katarina May Hermann
Attorney-General: Frank Frei
Minister of Internal Affairs: Larry Irving
Minister of Environmental Protection: Tyron Hambledon
Minister of Industry: Bendan Vinter
Minister of Agriculture: Fred Blumenthal
Minister of Social Services: Yolonda Rennold
Minister of Minority Affairs: Yasmin Houston
Minister of Energy: Millard Daskalov
Minister of Transport: Edwin Eustus
Minister of Immigration: Claus Wilkins

Zanzes: A First Look At Noctur's Most Mysterious Nation

ZANZIBAR, ZANZES 17:45 NST/16:45 NZT, February 6th, LET 57

Image
A rooftop photo taken in the city-square of Zanzibar, the major metropolis of the long-secluded country of Zanzes. Government officials revealed two weeks ago that they would attempt to make efforts into diplomacy with the Zanze, the first results of which are being seen today by a report back from within sovereign Zanzeanic territory.

How does one reconnect with a nation that has had limited contact with the world since A.O 975? (that's LAI 900, for those of you that follow the LET dating system). Zanzes is a nation that remains largely frozen in time, despite some obvious changes since the Empire that nations like Higgins-Brown, Algrabad, Hadin, and Nui-ta all remember and had documented while under colonial rule.

For starters, you need a grasp on the language, something that's relatively easy to acquire for Nui-tans despite the 150-year gap between the last time that the world saw Zanzes, and today. Nui-ta was the last country existing in Terra Occidens to be liberated from Zanzeanic control, as well as one of the first to be invaded. With a 700-year long history of Zanzeanic influence, linguists were assured that it would be relatively easy to re-establish communications with the country, "like riding a bicycle; once you learn you never truly forget".

Given that so much of the Zanzeanic language has entered into Melodian (even the Sangauranic dialect has to borrow from Zanzes occasionally, and standard Melodian is more littered with Zanzean than you would initially believe), a lot of what individual Zanzeans said was actually relatively intelligible. There are words that don't exist in Zanzes that exist in Nui-ta, and there are concepts in Zanzes that have gained words since Nui-ta last contacted Zanzes, that we need to learn the words for --- but basic conversation was surprisingly intact in Zanzibar.

That's right: Zanzibar. Remnants of Zanzes still exist in southeast Terra Occidens, and the city of Zanzibar has remained cut-off but relatively active, all things considered. The nation has experienced little technological growth in the 150 years that it has been alone. Train rails enter in and out of the city (a revolutionary technology back in the day!), but their lack of use since the fall of Zanzes has resulted in the original locomotives being scrapped for re-use elsewhere. The rails themselves stand as a mark of the past: children use them as side-streets, walking along the overgrown rails to get from one place or another. In some places within the city, handcars with carts are still operational, which residents of Zanzibar use to ferry materials back and forth, between the city and outlying suburbs or outposts. These suburbs sometimes have rail-hookups of their own on a network that spans out into a couple of other cities that we have yet to see. Zanzes has survived in the strangest of ways in such a regard.

Image
An overgrown railroad track south of Zanzibar. Some rails still receive maintenance in Zanzes and are used for handcar transport.

The village that was discovered by an unmanned surveillance drone and satellites a couple of months ago by military personnel in San Kalisto was a fluke. Just as there are places like this, in Zanzibar, that have survived with limited technology in isolation with some form of government still intact, there are also places like the small village which Nui-tans are tentatively calling "Za'haa", which are apparently isolated, stand-alone villages in their own right, with limited to no contact with the main portion of modern Zanzes.

What else is there to know about Zanzeanic culture? It's closest modern day equivalent is the nation of Algrabad. Zanzes was known for being a matriarchy during the days of occupation, and while some minor aspects of the social order seem to have changed from what was known about Zanzes before its fall, the general concept of matriarchy remains the same.

The society is divided between three classes, the El'fi, the Ze'lal, and the O'kar (which are the names of these social classes for women). The structural organization for men is the same, but the names are different. A male El'fi is called a Ka'fi, and male Ze'lal is called a Shari, and a O'kar is called a Ku'har. This is the structural organization of Zanzes which historians in HB, Algrabad, Hadin, and Nui-ta will all remember: it hasn't changed much.

El'fi and Ka'fi are still the highest ranking class of persons in Zanzes, able to hold governmental and political leadership roles. El'fi have spiritual roles in society, while Ka'fi have more mundane roles (like military leadership). Ze'lal and Shari are researchers, teachers, doctors, and for all intents and purposes a kind of middle class. O'kar and Ku'har are the working class. This is the biggest difference between Zanzes and Algrabad, the latter of which is influenced by the classless ideas of communism.

Image
Maj'ni children playing in a water-tub.

However, Zanzes's class system is very different than Nui-ta's on one crucial factor: it is not hereditary. Children born to all ranks are known as Maj'ni: "the unranked", and have to go through a coming-of-age trial in their teens, regardless of gender, that determines what social rank they will hold the rest of their life. Titles do not pass from one generation to the next: the child of a Ka'fi and an El'fi must earn the right to retain that rank in their adult life. Men and women can only interact and marry those of the equivalent rank, and homosexuality is apparently not recognized. People are also addressed by their class, before being addressed by last name, and then finally their first name.

Politically, towns are divided into two parts. There's the Tofne, which is an area of civil administration that contains many businesses, residences, and services like hospitals. Zanzes seems to run on a socialist government: some services like healthcare do not see any monetary exchange and are communally held, while shops appear to be privatized, and require actual currency (metal coins) or bartering. The gold specie standard is still in use in Zanzes, where monetary units are attributed to circulating gold coins; while smaller units of money are indicated by coins of less valuable material.

An interesting detail about the Tofne is that women of all ranks and Maj'ni children live here. Most of the men live elsewhere within town. The social structure of Zanzes appears to have remained very segregated on gender-based lines, with males who have come of age typically living in a separate area called the Izram --- a barracks. Men of all classes have military duties, even though Zanzeanic military technology and weaponry appears to be quite antiquated. Swords and pistols remain common, although the one-shot rifles that were commonly noted by historians across nations under Zanzeanic control before the fall of Zanzes seem to have been replaced with cylinder-based firearms. There are some men that live in the Tofne, but these are generally the recently of age, recently married, recent fathers, or the very old.

Nui-ta's reasons as to why it is attempting to develop a closer relationship with Zanzes, and bring the hermit nation into the modern world, have not been publicly discussed. A closed-door meeting was apparently held regarding Nui-tan foreign policy towards Zanzes, with theorists speculating that Nui-ta's interests may range from genuine diplomacy, research reasons, or curiousity, to more controversial reasons like military stratagem and even the possibility of expansion, annexation, or a return to colonialism. The Minister of External Affairs has denied that Nui-ta has any plans to return to colonialism, and limited foreign policy moves so far indicate that the External Affairs Ministry is dictating current and future policy based on Zanzes being an independent entity of some sort: but exact details remain highly classified.

Speculation exists that Nui-ta may be pre-emptively trying to exert influence in the technologically behind nation, in order to deter powers like Algrabad or Hadin from attempting a land-grab in the future. Given a quiet Detectatia, formal relations still pending between Nui-ta and Poldania, and an ever internally-occupied and distant Radiatia, the Monarchy may simply be looking for diplomatic ties elsewhere. In support of the theory of genuine curiousity, given that Nui-ta's closest neighbor to the west besides Zanzes is Algrabad, which is in an alliance with Hadin per the United Nocturian Cooperation Axis, the government may genuinely be concerned about anything unwanted happening to the west. Concerns have arisen that with ocean being the only thing south and east of Nui-ta that an UNCA-dominated box is quickly forming around Nui-ta; a concern that may worsen tensions between Nui-ta and Hadin, given fears that Hadin is more likely to instigate violence towards Nui-ta if it feels that an offensive war would be winnable. Although Radiatia and Nui-ta have seen less military co-operation in light of the now-defunct Fyoderov Administration, the mutual-defense pact does still remain in force, and may likely be the major deterrent of Hadinian offense in a show of violence.

With barriers of time, distance, and technology still being broken down between Nui-ta and Zanzes, it is yet unknown what "Zan-nui" international policy will become, but likely that it will play a major role in determine NuiHad policy as well. In the meantime, Zanzes may slowly open up to the rest of Noctur, and take its first steps into the modern world, in the wake of new contact between itself and Nui-ta.

Higgins-Brown and Algrabad: Where Does Nui-ta Stand?

Public sentiment in Nui-ta is increasingly becoming more militant, even though the government itself has dictated a peace-based foreign policy, refusing to engage in any war for reasons outside of genuine defense of Nui-ta or treaty-obligations. In a recent poll conducted by the NNN, 13% of those questioned on whether or not the non-intervention policy was justified said "no". This number increased after a re-poll shortly after the announcement of war in the Buffer Zone, to 18%. While the majority of citizens do still support the government's current policy of non-intervention, the reason as to why is more surprising than one would think.

Not Algrabad, not Higgins and Brown, not Hadin...not even Radiatia. Here's why:

Higgins-Brown/Algrabad: Both the government and the general populace can agree on one thing: support for Higgins-Brown in the Buffer Zone conflict is quite low. Many in Nui-ta believe that given the recent, violent attacks in the Buffer Zone, largely attributed to the HB Military, that Algrabad is fighting a defensive war against Higgins-Brown. The Medici Administration has openly declared that Nui-ta would only be interested in supporting Higgins-Brown if it felt that Higgins-Brown were being attacked without provocation --- while the Medici Administration remains neutral to both sides of the Buffer, its silence towards Higgins and Brown in the wake of what is now officially war is still worth a million words.

Hadin: A more influential factor in public opinion, but not the most pressing factor, is Hadin. Although tensions between Nui-ta and Hadin remain very high, the two nations have managed to avoid declarations of war. With guns pointed, and both sides at alert levels that see troops at increased vigilance, the only thing keeping the peace is mutual resistance for one side to fire the first shot. As long as that shot isn't fired, there's still a possibility of de-escalation between the two nations, and Nui-tan government policy towards Hadin has been to flatly affirm that if Hadin wants a war, it will only get an offensive one. For Nui-ta to enter the Buffer Zone conflict in such a scenario would essentially be to leave that policy and risk pulling the trigger first, and with Hadin already pledging support for Algrabad, and likely mobilizing as this article is being typed, Nui-tan entrance into the Buffer Zone would likely bring about the regional war that much of Noctur wishes to avoid.

Radiatia: Following directly from Hadinian concerns to Radiatian ones, there is definitely the concern that Radiatia has already promised not to aid Nui-ta in a conflict that isn't strictly defensive. Nui-tan foreign policy is certainly being written with appeasement of its larger ally to the north as a factor, but not the primary factor. Only 30% of all those surveyed within the poll during the re-take indicated Radiatia as being a factor in their judgement, with a majority of all those surveyed in the population believing that in a Higgins-Brown/Nui-ta vs. Algrabad/Hadin war in the Buffer Zone would result in an HBNui victory. While Noctur as a whole considers Nui-ta an auxillary to Radiatia, public sentiment in Nui-ta for increased military power seems to be growing. Among the right-wing, arguments are already beginning to form, criticizing the nation as having been "too reliant" on Radiatia over the past couple of decades, and this "power-grab" mentality, while on the fringe movements today, could become a very real concern in light of the Buffer Zone War, and possibly even in light of Zanzes.

But the winner is...

Segland: A vast majority of those polled cited Segland as a factor in their views on the Buffer Zone war. With the existence of UNCA, and what appears to be a relatively sudden change of heart by Segland towards support for Algrabad, the Seglandic powerhouse entering the war would spell doom for a Higgins-Brown/Nui-ta opposition. There is a very real possibility that Higgins and Brown stands to lose significant standing, and maybe even land, if Segland, Algrabad, and Hadin all go up against a lonely HB at the same time. Despite support and positive perception of Nui-tan strength and military potential at a high not seen in eight years, most Nui-tans agree that the smaller island nation would be asking for much more than it could chew if it had to face off against Segland without Radiatia.

And to make matters worse, even with Radiatia, the threat of all-out war between Radiatia and Segland, in a scenario where Radiatia were to, say, enter per the mutual defense pact, is a scary one. A Rado-Seglandic war could likely tip in either direction, and would certainly have heavy causalities, making it an unwelcome situation even among the most pro-Radiatia elements of Nui-ta society for a hypothetical ending in, at best, a Pyrrhic victory.

Overall, an ideology of Nui-ta needing to gain more military power and be less reliant militarily on Radiatia is gaining ground among the right wing, and could already be a factor influencing the far-away LET 60 elections. More importantly, it may also impact government policy, with Medici and Dehran now having to factor such views, and whether or not these views may be right, into their policy. It also flies in the face of Emperor Rowan di-Amori, who was preaching pacifism and promising not to "fire the first shot" long before HB-Algrabad, or Nico Hass, were even on the radar.

Anything that happens now, even though Nui-ta will very likely not be a part of the war, is going to ripple across the continent to the southern island. Nui-ta, and the rest of the world, can now only hold its collective breath and pray the impact won't be as bad as expected.

MUELLER: "WE ARE COMING TO YOUR AID, ALGRABAD"

Following the long-expected outbreak of war between the nations of Algrabad and Higgins and Brown, Chancellor Mueller has declared that Segland will be giving military support to Algrabad.

The chancellor announced to a sizable crowd in front of Neudton Gate the passage of the Resolution for Authorization of Military Intervention in Algrabad, which was approved by the Relmsenat in a special session with 291 supporting and 69 dissenting.

The Chancellor of Segland is the one individual who can introduce legislation to declare war on a foreign nation and/or authorize military action, but the endorsement of the Relmsenat is traditionally sought in these matters. Disagreements between the two entities are exceedingly rare, and in this case, as in many, they are quite together.

"The invasion of Algrabad by the deplorable expansionists in Higgins and Brown is the final straw," said Mueller in his announcement. "No nation will be allowed to violate the territory of another sovereign nation, even if it is disputed, such as in the case of the so-called Buffer Zone. Anyone with a knowledge of the area understands that the entire Zone is, in actuality, the sole property of the Algrabadis. Therefore it must be said: we are coming to your aid, Algrabad. It is time to expel the Higgins-Brownites once and for all."

War exploded into reality last Thursday when Higgins-Brownite paratroopers assassinated Algrabad's President Sediqqa and proceeded to attempt an attack on the country's central government. This totally unprovoked assault forced the Algrabadis to retaliate, initiating a mass invasion of the Buffer Zone. The Algrabadi People's Army has continuously outperformed the HB military, and many stories of heroism have emerged.

One Algrabadi footsoldier defended a group of abandoned children against a squad of HB troops who were indiscriminately shooting up the town in which the children were trapped. It is likely that the Higgins-Brownites were deliberately trying to massacre anyone who looked like an Arab, commencing a campaign of ethnic cleansing that will be justified in the future by "fog of war".

Even with the obviously evil acts being perpetrated by Higgins and Brown, some government figures urge caution. Most notably, newly-appointed Liaison Minister Alexei Haussmann stated in a joint press conference with UNCA ambassador Rupert Specht that "it is dangerous to proceed too quickly with our suddenly gained friends in the south of Terra Occidens". However, Haussmann went on to say that the war as well as Segland's intervention were justified anyway.

The Relmsenat recommended a clear course of action: to secure the Buffer Zone and assist Algrabadi and Hadinian troops. Indeed, the vast majority of Relmsenatiers demanded a clean and surgical operation in southern Terra Occidens.

The reality, of course, is that the war will be a vicious conflict in which the side that can maintain the most efficient supply lines and mobility will win.

Endless jungles, dense with greenery, make it difficult for quick movement through the Buffer Zone. Control of existing roads and modes of transportation will be critical to taking territory there. Thanks to recently-constructed training camps and bases in Hadin, Seglandic soldiers are more accustomed to fighting in the exotic climates found on the Occidental continent.

Despite the defensive nature of the war being fought by Algrabad, it is not universally agreed-upon that Higgins and Brown is the aggressor in this conflict. Thus, the mutual defense provisions of the Axis Treaty cannot be invoked, and the entirety of UNCA is not obligated to send military assistance to Algrabad. All nations are nevertheless encouraged to help, and two member states (namely Segland and Hadin) have already pledged their support to the Algrabadi war effort.

Several military groups of the Vihrforsse, or Armed Forces, are being mobilized for deployment to Algrabad. On the ground, the 7th Infantry Division and the 12th Armored Regiment will be sent to the Buffer Zone. In the aerial sphere, the 15th Fighter-Bomber Division, which is based in Hadin, has been summoned for combat.

The possibility of a naval deployment has been entertained by some, but until the completion of the Jarrod Corlehn Naval Base in northern Hadin, the costs of such a deployment would seem to outweigh the benefits. One thing, though, is clear: once powerfully-armed Seglandic ships like the destroyers SNS Remorseless Argonaut and SNS Sunset on Pluto are within easy reach of Terra Occidens, our nation will have a truly and irrevocably global navy.

General Svante Morgenssen will be taking the head of the National Military Commission for this operation. The Commission is composed of 10 chief military leaders, and it is chaired by the Chancellor, who holds an honorary position on it. For each major military deployment, the Commission awards command to a different member (excluding the Chancellor, who always takes precedence). This time around, it was decided that General Morgenssen should lead the Seglandic warfighters in Algrabad.

We at the Republican News Corporation wish our boys the best as they are shipped off to the perilous jungles of the Buffer Zone.

Higgins and Brown --- Going Down

February 7th, Aetas Liberi 24.

Image
A unit of the 3rd Hadinian People's Army preparing for deployment to Algrabad..

Making good on a promise to intervene on Algrabad's behalf in the event of a declaration of war, the High Envoy's office ordered mobilization of the 3rd Hadinian People's Army's units (both light infantry and armored divisions), as well as several naval and air force units, to Algrabad. The move to support military intervention into Algrabad was unanimously supported by all members of the Council of Patricians just over a week ago, and tensions in southwest Terra Occidens have since exploded since more barbaric attacks on Algrabadi soil by the heathenish people of Higgins and Brown.

The Algrabadi military is expecting additional support by the Seglandic military as well, although the brunt of naval support to Algrabad from outside countries is currently being given by Hadin, which has more military capability in the area given closer proximity to Algrabad, as well as the non-operational status of the incomplete Seglandic naval base in Hadin.

The HPS Andromalius and the HPS Orobas, both of which are Salutem-class cruisers, as well as the HPS Belial, which is a Pavor-class destroyer, have all been deployed to the area. Aerial details are still sketchy, as the nation is awaiting details from Algrabad as to which stratagem of aerial support the Algrabadi government deems most suitable to the war effort. All such plans remain classified until their execution following a final decision.

Furthermore, in a (sort of) surprise move, the Monarchy of Nui-ta seems to have agreed to remain neural in the HB-Algrabai conflict. While the Monarchy has failed to condemn Higgins and Brown for their actions outright, the Medici Administration, as well as the reigning Monarch Rowan di-Amori, have both failed to issue any statement of support. Higgins and Brown now faces the repercussions of its actions alone.

May Septima bless the united forces of Algrabad, Hadin, and Segland, as they take on the scourge of Higgins and Brown; we wish to encourage the population to pray for and offer tribute for the war effort, despite the fact that we can have firm faith of a swift victory. The promise by the High-Envoy of "a road to glorious hellfire" clearly awaits Higgins and Brown.

LET IT SNOW 57ish

Fyoderov kills own wife, removed from office

President Gregori Fyoderov was found guilty of ordering his wife's death, despite having used up his two free kills. At trial, the president's lawyers argued that Fyoderov should be let go on the basis that "no Radiatian can be reasonably expected to count to two".

The defense was dealt a fatal blow when the presiding justice ordered the "cessation of math-based arguments" to avoid confusing jurors.

Angela Pavlovic has succeeded to the presidency, much to the disappointment of prominent Radiatian politician Angela Pavlovic.

Yaksen kills own career, removed from office

Seglandic Liason Minister Erich Yaksen was forced to resign his position after posting an anti-Crataan message on CONFERO.

This was in the immediate aftermath of Fyoderov's impeachment, causing much confusion among the less-informed. Long-time CONFERO user and popular political poster @GF4LYF<3!11!! wrote: "y is greg in trble 4 callin out krate(sp??) 4 killin his wife???/?? u shud b aloud 2 b pissed if sum1 kills ur wife".

At the time of writing, the post had 2.7 million favorites and 1.2 million shares.

Akimoto kills no one, leaves office anyway
Prime Minister Akimoto Kumiko of Higgins and Brown unexpectedly resigned her office shortly after Segland's Erich Yaksen, saying it was "the latest fashion in politics" to do so.

Nico Hass to lead Hadin
The new High Envoy swore to do his best to lead his nation "through peace and to war" in these uncertain times.

In related news, Nui-tan city officials report an increase in demand for underground building permits.

Lieidis wins Conpatraia
Maria Cristina Lieidis will be the next president of Conpatraia, heralding a potential end the country's pacifism. Nui-tans and Poldanians expressed their relief and optimism at the result, with one anonymous official in Verdona excitedly confiding his belief that "one day soon, there could be more than one sane military per continent".

Merrina launches nuke
After a decade of work, the Merrinan Air Force revealed it had broken the codes on Poldania's nuclear arsenal in the area by launch an ICBM. The rocket's remote self-destruct was triggered, and the remains crashed harmlessly into the mountains along the countries' border.

Poldania's president Cesare demanded the return of the missiles, "or else". Merrinan president Hitzig reportedly responded by running around a silo licking missiles, shouting, "They're mine now!"

Area news writer tired of learning new names, calls for return to monarchy
"Look, I know it's all about 'democracy' and 'freedom' and 'protecting people from tyranny'," lamented the unnamed journalist, who writes for one of the region's most respected publications. "But it's just... there's so many of them! And they keep doing stupid s*** and getting kicked out! At least with oppressive dictators, they stick around and you get to know the guy!"

At press time, the writer was left sobbing into a binder of election results.

ANGELA PAVLOVIC:
AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE PRESIDENT

February 9th LET 57 Last updated 02:11 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

She's been described as everything from a "trailblazer for women's rights" to "the illegitimate heir of a corrupt President" and is herself willing to accept that she is an "Accidental President". RPNN speaks exclusively to Radiatia's seventh President, and first female President, in her first one-on-one interview with the media since her ascension to Noctur's most powerful position.

Image
Angela Pavlovic - the "Accidental President" and first woman to hold the office

I meet President Pavlovic in the living room of the apartment on Level 101 of the Executive Tower, that along with Silviu House in Alayenia, comprises the official residence of the President.

Pavlovic has become quite used to living here - for the last seven years she's been living two floors below on Level 99, and has lived much of her adult life in Xerconia, with her husband the former Defence Minister Arkadi Pavlovic. Originally a middle class girl from the west coast - born and raised in the bluest of blue states Clode, before taking off to Aazeronia to work for the Humanitarian League, Pavlovic's rise to the Presidency arguably represents the zenith of a long struggle up the career ladder of Xerconia's federal bureaucracy.

The couple have no children, although President Pavlovic requests privacy regarding the issue other than to clarify that this was not by choice and had to do with a health concern several years back which has prevented her from being able to conceive.

If I had to name a word to describe the President as a person, the only one that comes to mind is... "nice". I've interviewed every Radiatian leader since Lena Toriah, and of course I can't help but compare her demeanour to those of her predecessors. And she's the first one who, to me, honestly comes across as a genuinely nice person - as someone I would want to socialise with if she was, say, a CEO rather than a President.

She's not as prickly as Lena Toriah, not larger-than-life like Soden Larssen, or rigid and plastic like Keldon Silviu and a world away from the sweaty awkwardness of Gregori Fyoderov. She's at ease - in control, without being domineering. She's someone who comes across far more interested in others and maybe even a little surprised by all the attention upon her.

Before we begin - there's been a lot of debate online about the correct pronunciation of your first name. Is it pronounced with a hard G or a soft G?

It's pronounced "Angela".

Ah excellent. That should clear the issue up once and for all. The first question is... Is Radiatia ready for a woman President?

Yes. Well... it's got one whether or not it like it (laughs). But I don't think that the idea of a female leader is anything new in our history really... I'm not sure why people are acting like it's never happened before. Some of our greatest leaders were women - there was Lena Toriah, of course, and if you go right back to LAI 100 there was Empress Usula - without whom there would not be a Radiatia. There was also Jeniah Kakanburg who was Grand Chancellor of the RPSU... not so successful but an example of when we've had a female leader nonetheless.

I've always said I felt there was no reason why a woman can't be President. I can't say I'm happy with the way I've become President myself, but I would have run in LET 60 and I'd have taken that case to the Radiatian people.

Will you seek re-election in LET 60?

That's a long way away. Right now my job is to heal a very broken and very traumatised nation which has probably lost its faith in democracy. I'll decide closer to the time.

Is sexism an issue in modern Radiatia?

Absolutely. In fact it's disgusting.

I've already had to face all sorts of bizarre and indecent requests because of my gender - I've had requests from people wanting to know the timing of my menstrual cycle because they, quote, "feared that I might make a poor decision as a result of PMS", I've had people request photographs of my genitals to prove I'm really a woman and even in the media they're more concerned about what I'm wearing than what I'm saying.

You see horrible tabloids in Segland saying I'm unfit to govern because I'm a woman, and you ignore it because Segland are a very backwards country. And yet the tabloids and editorials here in Radiatia are saying the exact same thing.

You once, famously, compared yourself to Lena Toriah. Do you still hold that view?

Yes I do. I find it absurd that the left try to claim that they alone lay claim to the Toriah Administration's legacy. They forget that she was at heart a centrist, and they also forget that she was a deficit hawk.

Under Lena Toriah, the size of the private sector grew exponentially - she was very, very friendly to business. People focus on her government programmes, but they forget that the financial industry, manufacturing and the number of multinational corporations exploded under her watch.

Unlike the modern left, Lena Toriah understood that you need a growing economy if you want to implement expensive government programmes.

Actually here's another thing the left conveniently forget - Lena Toriah inspired a generation of right-wingers. Take Vladimir Perry, my Vice President. He's usually seen a libertarian, someone on the right of the LCP. But who gave him his start in politics? Lena Toriah did - he used to be a member of her party.

You husband was Soden Larssen's defence minister. Your predecessor was his foreign affairs minister. And you yourself were a backbench MP during the Larssen Administration. Is Soden Larssen an influence on your politics?

Well of course he is, but... you do have to understand that Soden Larssen had a very different set of issues - globally and domestically - than we face today so if you're expecting a carbon copy of his policies then expect to be disappointed (laughs).

He was Prime Minister, firstly under a totally different system of government, in a country where democracy was still quite a fresh idea. And he still had huge parts of the former communist regime still to dismantle, as well as grappling with the challenges that came with the fact that Radiatia was at the time the rising superpower of Noctur.

Nowadays we're pretty settled into our role as the Sheriff of Noctur but with that has come direct threats to ourselves from abroad... we didn't have as many enemies back in LET 40.

Will there be any changes in policy from the Pavlovic Administration, compared with the Fyoderov Administration?

No. President Fyoderov and I were elected on a specific set of promises and policies.

Fyoderov has since, ugh, well he's no longer the President. But that doesn't mean I'm not now obliged to fulfil the promises we made to the Radiatian people in LET 56.

We'll be continuing with the Fyoderov budget, we'll be pushing for free trade and the reduction of tariffs - in fact I'm looking forward to signing such a bill into law very shortly - and in foreign policy I'll be sticking to the Sunshine Policy where possible.

The Fyoderov Doctrine will remain in effect in foreign affairs where possible, and in defence I'll also be sticking to some version of the Larssen Doctrine - that of peace through strength.

Are there any areas you'll be taking a particular interest in?

Well I've had the benefit of a long career before becoming President which has given me experience in foreign affairs but also in economic matters... I'll probably be keeping a much closer watch over the economy than President Fyoderov did.

President Fyoderov seemed to want to ignore the rise of things like the UNCA, yet you've spoken openly about it and how it poses a threat to the Radiatian Federation. Is this not a change in policy?

It's been a fast moving situation, so obviously I have to react to the fact that the UNCA have been far more aggressive than we had anticipated. And yes that does mean that I'll be having face to face talks with allies and potential allies - I will be visiting Nui-ta, I'll be visiting Poldania, Conpatraia and if possible Higgins and Brown.

Speaking of Higgins and Brown - the border conflict with Algrabad has evolved into all out war involving Segland and Hadin. Will Radiatia really be remaining silent on this?

The war in Algrabad is a proxy war. I won't lie and pretend that it is anything other than Segland trying to see how far they can push Radiatia, and testing to see if they really can avoid a direct confrontation while still pursuing an aggressive foreign policy.

The Radiatian Federation will not be committing any military support to Higgins and Brown. However, that's not to say we don't support them. The Federal Assembly has just drafted a lend-lease bill - my Administration intends to support Higgins and Brown financially, primarily by loaning them money, calling a hiatus on existing debts and giving them access to Radiatian weaponry.

Will R-SOD be involved at all? Speaking of which - you have called for a massive reform of R-SOD. What do you mean by this?

R-SOD is a massively outdated institution - it existed during the RPSU, that's how old it is, and we've seen recently how corrupt it is and how easily it can be misused.

I won't just be reforming R-SOD, I will be abolishing it and replacing it with two, possibly more, new intelligence agencies - one will be called R-FID, the Radiatian Federal Intelligence Department and the other will be called the RMIA, the Radiatian Military Intelligence Agency.

Parliament and my Presidential Commission on Intelligence Reform are working out the details - R-SOD could potentially be split into up to four different agencies.

Isn't that less efficient than having one agency?

No. In fact it's probably more efficient than having one agency having to carry out four functions and thus stretch is budget and manpower. Plus there was less oversight in R-SOD - and we all saw the result of that.

Will your administration recognise Merrina as an independent nation?

No. The Federal Assembly did vote for it, I personally voted against it and will not hesitate to veto such a plan. My administration will seek closer ties to Poldania and we have to ask ourselves - imagine if the state of Drachensgard suddenly seceded from the federation? How would this country react? Not well.

Won't this bring Merrina closer to the UNCA, posing not just a security threat but also an economic threat given that Merrina import a lot of Radiatian firearms?

How can a nation which isn't a nation join the UNCA? Gervas Hitzig was about 26 when he began his crazy rampage - very young. There's only so long before Poldania are going to get tired of playing around and put a stop to it all.

Is this not a change of position for the Radiatian Federation?

No. We've always had a very close economic relationship with Poldania. They're actually a very progressive country - the current administration has taken a more conservative and hardline stance only out of necessity.

You and President Fyoderov both took a surprising stance on refugees. Why was that?

You mean that we believe Radiatia should be accepting refugees? Well of course we should. Anyone over the age of 40 can remember when it was Radiatians fleeing for our lives after the fall of communism - and the rest of the world took us in. Now it's time to return the favour.

Could Radiatia win a war against Segland?

Yes, but we don't want it to come to that. There would be huge numbers of casualties on both sides. Radiatia has more firepower, manpower and better technology - for example Segland does not yet have the technology to directly attack the Radiatian Federation which is why they are trying to set up proxies in Algrabad and Hadin.

Yes we could win the war but in war no one really wins... that's why I'll be continuing to avoid it at all costs.

What do you believe is the biggest threat to the Radiatian Federation today?

Well you're probably expecting me to say something like the UNCA, or even climate change. Actually it's neither of those - it's something far more mundane and far less sexy.

If we're not careful, we could be facing a currency crisis with huge economic and global ramifications. At the moment there is huge pressure on and demand for the Tsenyen as the major currency of Noctur - and the result of this has been that we have been printing money like no one's business.

Here's the problem - if demand for the Tsenyen slows we could end up with too many Tsenyens in our money supply, and it would require us to either deplete our foreign currency reserves or go massively into debt to rectify this.

Personally I'm inclined to think that it might be time to consider converting the Tsenyen to gold - something that Vice President Perry has long since advocated. People ask me why I chose a libertarian Vice President? That's why. He shares my view that we could be facing a currency crisis.

I'll be very seriously considering backing the Tsenyen with a gold standard.

Thank you very much for your time, Madam President.

Your welcome. Help yourself to some muffins on the way out.

Azhari Elected President by Unanimous Agreement
--
Captured Higgins-Brown Settlers Mercifully sent to Hadin to Claim Asylum
--

The People of Algrabad have been granted a new leader by the just and wise revolutionary assembly. The new woman is of course our glorious and intelligent outgoing Vice-President and Chairwoman of the National Revolutionary Council, comrade Sulaf Azhari. Comrade Azhari implored the citizens and active forces of Algrabad to expect immediate victory in the War of Reunification. She applauded Vice-President Canaan on his command of the 1st Army.

Our allies in Segland, Ainutola and Hadin have committed to our cause with gusto, with all of Noctur unified in agreement on the need to defeat the Higgins-Brownite menace! Even feudal Nui-ta and capitalist Radiatia have declined to help the foolish terrorists of counter-revolutionary Higgins-Brown! This is entirely due to the work of President Azhari while she was serving as Vice-President.

All glory to the Almighty Revolution!

Higgins-Brownites Sent On Their Way
Land-grabbing Higgins-Brownites have finally been sent packing from many parts of the liberated provinces. Many of them fought to the death for their ill-gotten gains, but many surrendered, admitting they knew this day would come.

But what to do with men of Higgins-Brown? That nation breeds rapists and women-beaters, as we know. So, they have been sent mercifully to Hadin, as part of the mutual exchange program we have, set up by glorious President Azhari during her time as Vice-President.

Algrabad now appeals to other countries to take in those women who have been captured.

Many boats have been seen leaving the liberated provinces full of civilians of different nationalities. Unfortunately, Higgins-Brownite agression prevents the People's Navy from performing humanitarian rescues. Those sailing away from the area will likely make their way north, to the unforgiving lands of Zinwa and the northern continent. All victims, of course, of the violence and oppression of Higgins-Brown, that has forced us into this war.

Meanwhile, reports from Higgins-Brown of panic and revolution are coming in. Communists there have risen up against their government, and it will surely fall soon. However, in the mean-time, Algrabadi dwellers of the Liberated Provinces have been kidnapped in large numbers and taken to death camps there. President of Higgins-Brown, Jane Wrinklesprout, is auctioning them off as slaves to other counter-revolutionary countries, in the hope that she may trade them for weapons.

This is the savagery we would face without the Almighty Revolution - may it spread and conquer the feudal terrorists of Higgins-Brown!

SMALL TOWN WAIVES DEBTS FOLLOWING ALGRABAD CONFLICT
PRESIDENT PAVLOVIC SIGNS LEND-LEASE ACT, ORDERS TRADE EMBARGO

February 12th LET 57 Last updated 09:03 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

HIGGINS AND BROWNE, LUNTZBUSCH
The Higgins and Browne Combined Statistical Area in Luntzbusch has today announced that it will be waiving the debts owed to it by the Republic of Higgins and Brown, in a show of support for the Republic in its war against Segland and its allies.
Image
The Higgins and Browne CSA has waived debts owed to it by the Republic of Higgins and Brown

In LET 53, the town had several public assets repossessed by the Nocturian Organisation of Bankers due to confusion over the town sharing a name with what was formerly known as the Republic of Higgins and Browne.

The Republic had a debt of 6 billion Tsenyens - however the Exegrad based NOB believed that this was owed by the Higgins and Browne CSA in Luntzbusch and bailiffs subsequently proceeded to repossess several schools, a hospital and even attempted to load a whole football stadium onto the back of a truck.

Although the State of Luntzbusch originally demanded 50 billion Tsenyens in reparations (which would have been equivalent to nearly half of that nation's GDP), a deal was struck in which it was agreed that the Republic would change its name to "Higgins and Brown" (rather than Browne) and pay the CSA a reduced sum of money for reparations, believed to be around 1 billion Tsenyens.

In a landmark vote by the local council, the Higgins and Browne CSA voted to waive the remainder of the debt, in recognising that the Republic of Higgins and Brown is currently embroiled in a war against communists, barbarians and Segland (who are arguably both) and taken as a show of support.

"We need them folks down in Higgins and Brown to kick the crap outta the commies much more than we need another football stadium," Said Councillor Ivonette Neumann. "So we're sayin', dang it, take the money and you folks spend it to fight your war and know that the folks of Higgins and Browne are right behind y'all!"

Neumann said that the twin towns will not be offering the return of the "E" at the end of the country's name - "We don't want to accidentally bring their war over here."

In Xerconia, President Angela Pavlovic signed the "Lend-Lease" bill - effectively pledging that the Radiatian Federation will be lending Higgins and Brown money in order to purchase ordnances and equipment as necessary to win its war against Algrabad - which has since seen Hadin and Segland join in.

"My message to Higgins and Brown is that the Radiatian Federation stands behind you, and we will lend you whatever you need - there are no limits," Said the President. "We will not charge interest or ask for the money back until after this war has been won.

"Higgins and Brown can win this war assuming that its military forces are equipped with the state-of-the-art technology that only Radiatian arms manufacturers can provide. Accordingly this bill will give Higgins and Brown the option of purchasing equipment that has hitherto only been available to the Radiatian military."

The bill controversially allows Higgins and Brown to purchase, if necessary, top-of-the-range military equipment such as the TrupmaЪiin-2 Main Battle Tank (aka "The Lightning Tank") - the first time the tank has ever been offered for sale outside of the Radiatian Federation (though the TrupmaЪiin-1 has been widely sold outside of Radiatia).

Defence Minister Roland Schultz stated that two factors were present in the decision to allow the potential sale of the TrupmaЪiin-2: the first being the urgency of situation, and the second being the development of the rumoured TrupmaЪiin-3 as the next generation of Radiatian MBT.

Minister Schultz confirmed that Higgins and Brown would be given access to the purchase of "any Radiatian-made aircraft for the purpose of achieving air and technological superiority over the enemy. The obvious exception is the B-1000 as that technology remains highly classified."

President Pavlovic denied that it was a "blank cheque" to Higgins and Brown, reminding those concerned that, "We are lending this money to allow Higgins and Brown to purchase from Radiatian Arms Manufacturers. This will boost demand in communities with arms factories... from our perspective it's win-win. This is economic stimulus and a national security investment."

Although the Radiatian Federation has pledged not to directly intervene in the conflict, President Pavlovic today announced a "comprehensive" trade and arms embargo against Hadin, Segland and Algrabad and stated that the Sea Force would be deployed to enforce this embargo.

This follows a similar move by the government of Poldania.

President Pavlovic confirmed that the Carrier Strike Group RFS Lena Toriah had been deployed to Nui-ta, where any vessel attempting to brings goods in or out of Hadin will be intercepted, and has encouraged the Poldanian military to consider a similar strategy off Seglandic waters.

"Segland is a more complicated case, but with Hadin we can easily isolate them and we can starve them until they back down.

"And in the end all three countries will be crippled economically from these sanctions - you have the two largest economies in Noctur, Radiatia and Poldania, isolating them... the UNCA nations will not last long."

President Pavlovic refused to comment on whether there was a Radiatian military presence near Seglandic waters.

"We are not interested in escalating or creating a conflict. They chose to intervene, and they will face these sanctions as a result."

Skody CEO Kristia Schwangau has stated that the company are "deeply unhappy" with the arms embargo and is threatening to sue the federal government for loss of profits.

"This represents government interference in the free market. We should be allowed to sell arms to whoever will buy - even if it is a hostile nation like Segland or Hadin," She said. "We may use ISDS legislation to sue the federal government for infringing on our right to make a profit through this arms embargo.

"This affects us more than it does Segland. Politics should have nothing to do with the peaceful sale and trade of arms and munitions."

MERRINAN INDEPENDENCE FINALLY RECOGNIZED IN UNANIMOUS VOTE BY RELMSENAT

The Relmsenat passed a resolution to recognize the independence of Merrina in a stunning 360-0 vote.

As usual, the will of the Seglandic people has triumphed over the hostility and negativity of foreign states! Even in the ruthless blockade of our vast coastline by the Poldanian navy, a sense of optimism has prevailed among the populace. This optimism has translated into a desire for the acknowledgement of Merrina as an independent nation.

There was virtually no debate on the floor of the Relmsenat as legislators came to the consensus that Merrina must be recognized as independent by a major regional power. Truly, we owe it to our Germanic brothers to be a help in these times of trouble.

The passage of this resolution comes as the citizenry of Segland makes it clear that it supports the racially similar people of Merrina and Crata, and that it condemns the evil actions of Poldania, which is emerging as a national enemy almost on the scale of Radiatia.

The bizarre blockade ordered by Robert Cesare is perceived as a violation of the trust extended to Poldania by the government of Segland, who invited a Poldanian delegation to the Wildenbrunn Conference and entertained the possibility of Poldanian membership of UNCA. Now, it seems much more likely that Merrina could be a candidate for UNCA membership. The two-faced Poldanian scum, who are not even authentically Germanic, will never be again be friends of the Seglandic Republic.

Implications of our recognition of Merrinan independence range from the mutual establishment of embassies to the possibility of Segland assisting in the production of unconventional weaponry.

Rsr. Niklaus Aeschelin of Lindland, the author of the resolution, offered The Republican a statement on the situation: "I'm proud to have written such an important piece of legislation, and I'm also very encouraged by its success in clearing the Relmsenat unanimously. Hopefully, our allies across the world will follow suit with their own resolutions."

Many in the government, like Aeschelin, would love to see the other UNCA nations recognize the independence of Merrina as well, sending a clear signal of support for Merrina and perhaps speeding their own entry into the Axis.

On a much grimmer note, Liaison Minister Haussmann sent a warning to Poldania, saying that "if their ships along our coast engage Seglandic civilians, they can expect total and utter destruction at the hands of the Seglandic Navy."

The Records

Modern Zanzes's Best Source of News: Now "Online"

The World While We Were Away

All Zanze can recount the story of "the fall", in which the Empire collapsed and the reign of former Ka'fi Nim'sa-har Junir was brought to an abrupt end. The nation has carried on in the wake of that tragedy, broken into pieces, isolated from much of the world.

The stories tell us that we once had two major colonies, Nar-ha'tal, and Him'si-Tim'si; which have since separated into various smaller nations following the end of colonialism. It is curious to see where the world has gone in our absence.

Him'si-Tim'si had split into three nations, Higgins and Brown, Algrabad, and Rango Mango, while Nar'ha-tal has divided into the nations of Nui-ta and Hadin. Visiting foreigners in Zanzibar; the first to make contact with us in many years, are from Nui-ta, a portion of Nar-ha'tal which largely resembles the culture of the land before Zanzes entered into it. Nui-ta is a land steeped in tradition, although willing to embrace modern advances as well: the Nui-tans have introduced us, in the short time that they have been here, to things like "widespread electricity" (who knew it could work 24-hours a day?), televisions, horseless-vehicles known colloquially as "cars" and, most astoundingly, computers.

They have also elaborated on much of the old technology left to us by our fore-mothers. The metal lines crossing the nation, which many have converted into roads or used hand-carts on, are compatible with modern technology known as "trains", which our fore-mothers apparently developed and expanded long ago, when Zanzes was at the height of influence and power in the region. More interestingly, the "metal-birds" that had many Zanze panicking several months ago are actually a new form of controllable, mechanical transportation known as "planes".

Although there are some who fear that the Nui-tans may overtake us, the Ka'fi of Zanzibar have been in long talks with the men and women of the Nui-tan diplomatic parties, and have assured us that talks are "going quite well". There is concern of a growing threat of war, occurring now in the westerly region of what was once Him'si-Tim'si, which could expand into Zanzes. The technologically advanced nations of Algrabad and Higgins and Brown could easily overtake Zanzeanic forces.

Although no official agreement or terms have been drawn up yet, it would seem that the Nui-tans are interested in trade and military technology, hoping to advance Zanzes as a sovereign nation in exchange for international relations. This comes amid growing concern of sightings of pale, violet-eyed soldiers on the shores of our north-eastern lands. Whether we are overtaken or welcomed into the international community remains to be seen, but Shabbriya Munar be praised if there is indeed no ill-intent.

DERRO VAHNSEHN DIES
FORMER PRESIDENT WAS 83 YEARS OLD

February 14th LET 57 Last updated 23:11 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

TAVLAND, CLODE
Former President Derro Vahnsehn has died following a 'severe' stroke in his home in Tavland, Clode according to sources close to his family. He was aged 83.

Derro Vahnsehn in LET 30

President Vahnsehn was taken to hospital, but reportedly died before he arrived. He is survived by his wife Marya Vahnsehn.

Derro Vahnsehn served as the second President of the Radiatian Federation, from LET 26 until LET 31 - a Presidency which is widely considered to have been the most controversial in Radiatian history.

President Angela Pavlovic ordered all flags in the Radiatian Federation to be lowered to half staff, and confirmed that Vahnsehn would receive a full state funeral in the coming days.

Several tributes have already been paid to the late President.

Former President Keldon Silviu said that in his later years "President Vahnsehn was always willing to lend advice and had a number of unique insights into domestic and international situations which I found invaluable as President."

Former President Yerkal Nathus spoke of the "special bond that only those who occupy the office of President will ever understand. Derro Vahnsehn was a man who very deeply loved his country and all its people."

Derro Vahnsehn's Presidency coincided with massive economic reforms, led by the Demodand government, along with a series of controversial unilateral actions ordered by the President, including the controversial LET 27 invasion of Naras which led to Radiatia briefly becoming an international pariah state. Following his Presidency, Derro Vahnsehn was banned from entering a number of foreign countries and advised never to leave Radiatia for fear of assassination, such was his unpopularity abroad.

On the home front he was regularly criticised for his autocratic leadership style, which included censorship of the media, the introduction of the so-called "poll tax" and his tendency to govern through decree, rather than with the co-operation of Parliament. It was speculated that Vahnsehn was a would-be dictator who sought to undermine Radiatia's fledgling democracy.

However he was also beloved and admired by many - his firebrand populist rhetoric struck a chord with Radiatians who felt alienated and afraid following the fall of communism and he is credited for reversing Radiatia's economic and military decline in the LET 20s.

"Derro Vahnsehn was a man who firmly believed that the way to win people's respect was to make them fear you, and in some ways he was right," Said commentator Dr. Boris Kahler. "He ran his administration by making people fear him enough to respect him, and in foreign policy he somewhat cemented Radiatia's status and a rising, rather than declining, power by causing the world to fear Radiatia again."

Unusually for a former President, Derro Vahnsehn returned to politics as a member of Parliament, leading the far right Radiatian Destiny Party to its best ever result in LET 34 - primarily by moderating the party's message, moving away from hardline fascism to right-wing populist anti-immigration policies.

Vahnsehn was never a man to shy from causing controversy - be it through clumsy gaffes such as "I may be a sexist but at least I'm not a woman" to more serious claims, such as his call to "euthanise the weak" which he later claimed he said "as a joke".

And yet in spite of an apparent prejudice against any and all groups of people who differed from his narrow worldview, Derro Vahnsehn had an unusual compassion for the poor - especially for children - and was the patron of a great number of children's charities across Radiatia and Noctur.

"Derro Vahnsehn has left a mark on Radiatian history," Said one political scientist. "The problem is we don't know what it is yet. He's a racist, sexist warmonger who apparently hates the weak on one hand and yet on the other he has contributed more to charity and charitable works than any other politician in our time."

It may be years before the exact nature of his legacy is known.

Derro Vahnsehn: The Good

  • Patron of the Vahnsehn Foundation, who help drug addicts and impoverished children among others
  • Contributed over 2 million Tsenyens of his personal wealth to build a children's hospital in Tavland
  • Involved in international outreach operations aiming to eradicate disease and poverty

Derro Vahnsehn: The Bad

  • Illegally invaded Naras
  • Censored the media, and unsuccessfully attempted to consolidate his own power
  • Opposed women's suffrage and democracy in general

Derro Vahnsehn: The Gaffes

  • "I may be a sexist but at least I'm not a woman." - Opposing a bill to give women the right to vote under federal law
  • "The worst part of being President is dealing with dirty foreigners. And elections. Actually no, it's dealing with elections." - Vahnsehn voicing his support of Kurt Demodand's controversial poll tax
  • "Alcoholism is a lot like Communism. First you get hammered, then you become sickle." - At the opening of the first Derro Vahnsehn Rehabilitation Centre.
  • "I was drunk." - Vahnsehn justifying his controversial invasion of Naras in LET 27
  • "Just how far from the edge of the world are Tuthina, anyway?" - On conflict in the Oriens Ocean
  • "Are you sure that's your natural skin colour and not a skin disease?" - During a meeting with Ambassador from Rango Mango
  • "I've come to respect Lena Toriah. She had tits and she had balls. What's not to like?" - Following Lena Toriah's resignation from parliament
  • "There's an international community now?" - After being informed that he had been condemned for his Invasion of Naras

Your Least Affected News Outlet During Times of War!

Battle of Nefarre Pass Ends in Victory for Defending Patriots!/b]
It seems the bravery of our soldiers knows no bounds. The government have informed this outlet that a major offensive by Algrabadis to cross the Erezi Mountains has been halted at the very first point of resistance! A timely landslide coincided with vicious hand-to-hand mountain combat, shortly after the Algrabadi forces launched tank and artillery barages on the forward Higgins-Brownite positions.

RAF Army Corps (RAFAR) Border Rangers utilised never-before-seen tactics to force armoured vehicles off the mountainside. Later, with supplies running low, rangers resorted to "bouncing" grenades down the road to oncoming infantry. After some hours of battle, the APA resorted to a highly risky artillery barage of the position, which may have caused the avalanche that has now made the pass impassable.

Rescue teams were deployed to dig out the Rangers caught under the snow, but many KIA casualties were confirmed.

The long-awaited offensive on the border went ahead elsewhere with more success, and the APA is now estimated to be in control of 900 Km2 of Higgins-Brownite territory on this side of the Erezi Mountains. This small breakthrough will be dangerous to our chances of resisting the enemy in the near future. Air supremacy in the area is being hotly contested. The Government will not comment on any planned counter-offensives.

[b]Greyshirt Guerrillas Petition Government to Engage the Enemy

The Far-right paramilitary group the Greyshirts, associated with the Front for a United Nation, has engaged in intensive training of new guerilla units since the declaration of war in February. The surprisingly slow advance of the enemy has given them time to hone their skills, and today the group, under their leader Altier Todd Morder (acting leader of the Front), officially petitioned the War Cabinet to give them clearance to join the front lines.

The War Cabinet would not comment on the petition. It is thought that the President may be amenable to the proposal, whereas both the RAF and the Prime Minister's party, the Republican Social Democrats, would be set against allowing them to enter the war as independent units. For the RAF, military control and discipline is paramount. For the left-leaning Ministerial parties, relying on so-called "fascists" in war does not sit well.

Morde announced that 2 battalions of volunteers (1800 men altogether) were ready to take part immediately, with 4 more battalions being trained up by army veterans serving in or employed by the Greyshirts.

Air Corps Destroys Algrabadi Ports, Bombs Lizqueh and Jamneh
The Algrabadi Navy - the weakest of its military forces, has been "completely crippled" according to RAF Air Corps (RAFAC) spokesperson Altmilier Farage. RAFAC raids have consistently and effectively moved against Algrabadi ships and naval ports. The use of Radiatian aircraft has assisted the success of these operations, although RAFAC sources insist that they could have done it with good old Higgins-Brownite planes.

RAFAR Air Assault units have also returned from perilous night-time assaults near Adwanib in Zucchara province, where they have reportedly blown up several installations and ships, before returning by helicopter. These are the first Higgins-Brownite "boots on the ground" in Algrabad since the war began. The raids were entirely successful, but not without casualties.

RAFAC squadrons have begun bombings of strategic targets in the cities of Lizqueh and Jamneh. Previously, as the cities were centres of fleeing refugees, the RAF had refrained from bombing. However, new intelligence has revealed the routes that refugees are taking and being forced to take, allowing the RAF Air Corps to take out strategic targets a safe distance away. The City of Lizqueh sits on the border between Algrabad and the Buffer Zone, and is a resupply hub for the APA divisions currently fighting their way through the Erezi Mountains.

Domestic Coalition Expands, No Changes to War Cabinet
Leader of the National Liberal & Republican Party (AKA NRL, Nareli), Merl Rabin, has been appointed as 3rd Deputy Prime Minister under Júlian Mánard. He is the 4th person to hold the office since last September, after Mánard vacated it to become Prime Minister. National Party leader Daniel Fox - a bitter rival of Merl Rabin's - has also been appointed to the Ministry as First Executive Minister without portfolio. All major parties with the exception of the United Left Front and the Front for a United Nation are thus now represented in Mánard's War Ministry.

Despite this consensus in the domestic government, the President has made no changes to her War Cabinet, and has signalled that she doesn't intend to do so. Mánard and 3 ministers sit in the War Cabinet, with the 3 (2 RSD and 1 Lib) picked reportedly for their prior experience, not their party affiliation or seniority. The President is running a tight ship from the Commissionary Bunker in Michaelstown (precise location classified), with just 9 people involved in the highest level discussions on the direction of the war.

Meanwhile, Martial Administration has been announced in Muken and Krásaul regions, following the breakthrough in the Erezi Mountains. No other news is available regarding RAF plans in the area.

Refugee Crisis Worsens as residents abandon Athboi, "Boat People" setting up camps north of Zinwa, appealing for aid.
With the recent merciless bombings of Athboi, the population there has shrank as residents head west. The new "Minister for Civilian Supply", Elán Keli, has called for world leaders to offer temporary homes to refugees of the war. Some of those fleeing Athboi were already refugees, having fled the Buffer Zone in previous months.

Meanwhile, some refugees have escaped the Buffer Zone by Arabic Bay in boats. Refusing to submit themselves to pick-up by Higgins-Brownite Naval vessels, the so-called "Boat People" have sailed to Zinwa and beyond, setting up camps on the Occidental west coast. Aid agencies are calling on governments across Noctur to help them.

Hadin Navy Gets Closer to Higgins & Brown
The Hadinian Navy carrier group heading up the west coast of Terra Occitens is bearing down upon our nation. RAF Naval Corps (RAFNAC) spokespersons are confident that the group will not have the strength to complete the journey in the face of their opposition. Domestic commentators are unsure of the final objective of the group: whether to land and resupply Algrabad, directly attack Higgins & Brown, or merely occupy the 3rd Fleet for long enough to reduce our own capacities.
