Gaul Is Now an Atomic Power

President Émile de Charles reaffirmed the Republic of Gaul’s commitment to our allies, the signatories of the Astyrian Treaty Organization, as well as the Kingdom of Haguenau, our ally in the Gaulic League in a historic speech from the Auditorium of the University of Paritte earlier this morning, during a guest turn at a student leadership conference. Such was to be expected as tension continues to heat up between the ATO and its rival, the EATA. Notably tension has risen in the Gaulic colonies of Kamalbia and Cote de Cuivre, where recent uprisings are being blamed by the Government on Exponential and EATA agents stirring up local resistance. Specifically, officials in Paritte in recent weeks have claimed to have strong evidence that these suspected agents are arming and training Marxists and other banned opposition parties to the colonial governments. President De Charles not only outlined Gaulic fears about this issue, but also the looming danger of mass amounts of Exponential troops being armed, trained and equipped for a future invasion of Teudallum. The piece de resistance of the speech, though, was when the President confirmed what has long been suspected: Gaul now will use the power of the split atom, both for energy needs and in the realm of defensive deterrence.

In conjunction and with the aid of our greatest ally, the GHawkins Republic, we continue to be vigilant in order that we are prepared to meet force with force and deter the growing threat of the Exponential Empire and its allies in the EATA. In order to fully match force, we have neared completion on a nuclear arms program and expect to conduct testing within the next year. We will deploy this force wherever and whenever necessary in order to bolster our allies and meet our obligations to the ATO, as well as provide the ultimate deterrent to attack on Gaul and its territories...

It has been confirmed through several anonymous sources that GHawkins experts have been in residence in Gaul, working with our own technicians in order to speedily develop a sustainable nuclear program. It is without a doubt that, without GHawkins help, Gaul would not have been able to achieve such rapid success in the nuclear field this soon after the first atomic test done by GHawkins in 1944. More than likely it would have taken at least another decade, most experts agree, were Gaul to unilaterally pursue their own nuclear program. It is not totally certain where all the materials came from, but at least for uranium, our Republic has a plentiful supply from Kamalbia and it has been heavily mined and shipped to Gaul over the last few years. Other materials have undoubtedly come from Prudene and Cote d’ Cuivre over the last half decade, or from within the Republic.

This reporter was able to talk with think tank experts, notably Dr. Hastings, at the Strategic Astyrian Studies Institute in GHawkins City in research of the geopolitical ramifications of the new nuclear dynamic in the region.

Dr. Hastings was of the firm belief that testing will take place in uninhabited stretches of the Greater Dachine Ocean Territory, to the far northwest of the island chain, as well as some evacuated stretches of Western Kamalbia. Such testing would more than likely include both underground and above ground.

Possible deployments of nuclear ordnance, says Dr. Hastings, would likely be with the submarine fleets, in strategic silos throughout the Gaul Republic, and on board Vulcan bomber squadrons in the colonies. Were permanent launch areas, or silo bases, as they’re known, to be established in the overseas Astyrian colonies, it could possibly cause friction with neighboring nations to those colonies, whether they are EATA aligned or not.

The 25th bomber squadron, based at the Allendault Aerodrome in Marqueville, is more than likely to be on the frontline and they are within distance of reaching Western Hesperidesia with air refueling. It is uncertain whether there would be an attempt by the GAF to arm the Cuivran based Vulcan bomber squadron, the 27th, with future nuclear bombs. Such an action, said Hastings, would be sure to provoke a response by the Exponential regime, possibly touching off The Third Great Astyrian War, and be likely to be strongly advised against by GHawkins Republic and the other ATO powers who are not prepared for an immediate full confrontation with the Exponent Empire and EATA.

While questions continue to build about possible deployments of the super weapons, it is certain that they are being developed and stockpiled, should the need arise. Hastings was unable to comment on the number of bombs or missiles that Gaul may already possess, or the rapidity of how many could be developed within a year’s time, but did affirm that Gaul has the means and the technology, as well as military allies willing to enable such rapid progress.

The added benefit of nuclear power, as outlined towards the end of the speech by President De Charles, is that our nation will be able to have an alternate energy source and phase out reliance on coal burning and oil powered generator stations. It has been a goal for some time now to get away from coal and heavy oil which recent studies are showing may not good for the local atmosphere.

Opposition politicians have stated in the past that Gaul seeking to possess such weapons is contributing to brinkmanship and moving us quickly closer to nuclear annihilation and apocalyptic scenarios which would spell the end of Gaul and all those under Gaul rule, as well as our allies and enemies alike.

Going Bananas For... Bananas?

Psychologists and Economists alike are baffled when new sales results have indicated a 50% increase in Trellinese bananas in the past 3 quarters. This is more significant due to the fact that Trellinese products have never been particularly heavily taxed in the past, and the sales of other fruit have not changed. Notably, bananas from other sources appear to have maintained steady sales despite competition from their Trellinese counterparts.

"I don't see any other reason other than personal choice, really, that would make a consumer purchase more Trellinese bananas in addition to the normal fruit consumption. There has been no significant advertising campaign to date which can explain this discrepancy, nor has the population changed much." an economist is quoted as saying.

His psychologist colleague continued by concluding "It is really a mystery to all of us - I can't quite pin this behaviour on anything I know at the moment. But will you excuse me, it's time for my fifth banana of the day."

We have contacted a botanist, who have agreed to respond to us on the condition that her name not be disclosed, who verified that "Trellinese bananas are no different from other bananas. Taste, length, curvature, colour, chemical makeup, consistency, you name it. They're just good old bananas. Emphasis on good."

A Hero's Farewell

Today marks the day of the return of two of the nation's war heroes. Both shot down over the skies of Nouvel Ecosse, they died as they lived, as soldiers protecting freedom and independence. They are Major Mikhail Arnuldsson, 32, and Captain Christina Lysov, 28. Major Arnuldsson is survived by his partner, while Captain Lysov is survived by her husband and two young children. Both have passed the academy with flying colours and served the Rombergian military for many years to merit. In addition, Major Arnuldsson is one of the first openly gay personnel to be accepted into the military on contract, a definite step forwards in social equality. Both will be fondly remembered by their families and next of kin, as well as their comrades in arms.

The families of both have requested that following a homecoming ceremony to return their bodies onto Rombergian soil, their remains would be handed over to them for burial and as such, no state funeral shall be held. The Rombergian government have hence decided to fully pay for the burials of both soldiers and provide a pension for their surviving kin. In addition, they are both posthumously granted the rank of "Ritter" in recognition for their sacrifice.

In a statement published shortly after the plane containing the remains have landed, the Kaiser lauded both as embodying the military ideal of the nation, serving the nation faithfully to defend against aggression. He states that the two pilots shall serve as an example to fellow service personnel, and that their lives would not be lost in vain.

Andamonia concedes defeat amid empire-wide collapse

Peace has been restored to the eastern Velar. In an unhoped for turn of events, Amahuiz Tlacapilzi has today ordered imperial forces in east Txekrikar and western Andamonia to stand down and withdraw, as a first step towards surrendering the Usma lands still held by Andamonian forces.

The Andamonian emperor stepped onto his balcony in Zadé Axochizin in front of a sea of cameras to order the total surrender of forces fighting against the Sidereal Crown and Txekri forces for control over the Usmalím, a territory which since the Great War has been disputed between the Trellinese and Andamonian empires. The western Usmalím was subsequently occupied by Trellinese forces during the Trophy Wars of the 1930s, while most of the land east of the Baira river remained in Andamonian hands, administrated from the city of Reu (or Rehahu). A steady stream of migrants westward across the Baira left the marshes a militarised wasteland. In September this year they once again became the scene of renewed conflict as Andamonia retaliated against the Sidereal Crown for its reoccupation of the Trophy Ports.

Although the length of the Baira saw bloodshed, Zitiar, capital of the Txekri Usmalím, was the bottleneck where Prince Eskhan's troops rallied to face the bulk of the Andamonian offensive. The Txekri Guard distinguished itself in combat, forming the vanguard as they awaited Trellinese support. The arrival of the Sidereal Crown's new fighter jets in Zitiar on October 4th turned the tide of war and ended the attempt to capture the city. At the same time, tactical strikes from bases in Kerypa and an aircraft carrier offshore crippled airbases and facilities on the Olahu peninsula, at Pathatl and Teraxi Yú. Andamonian troops were forced to withdraw, in many cases leaving behind the crippled hulks of their tanks to sink slowly into the mud. They returned to an empire tearing itself apart, as local militias which once enjoyed imperial sanction turned against central government, clamouring for their own demands to be met. At the same time, riots erupted in the streets of Makami, Zadé Axochizin and Cevrazu, calling on the emperor to end the bloodshed. The calls went unanswered for another month, however, even despite the Dangish Empire announcing trade restrictions, on both Trellin and Andamonia, on October 17th. In Mar'theqa, many agitated for the military to press on to the Andamonian capital and hand Emperor Amahuiz an ultimatum directly.

Instead, King Mahrim II elected to confine the focus of the counterassault to the edge of the Usmalím, and ground forces moved to secure Reu on the 22nd while a campaign of disabling Andamonian bases further east continued. Aside from halfhearted attempts by militias to recapture the city and other towns in the province, the reoccupation of the Usmalím went unopposed by government in Zadé Axochizin. The Andamonian navy fought several engagements with the Trellinese squadrons in the Txekrian Gulf and Gulf of Andamonia but was kept on the retreat. When nothing like a surrender or ceasefire was offered by Emperor Amahuiz by the 31st, naval facilities in Getús and Uushen were occupied as beachheads in preparation for a possible move on the Olahu peninsula.

Ultimately, however, the Armed Forces held off on renewing their offensive, leaving the defeat of the Andamonian military to the same militias and rebels resisting the Trellinese presence. Sidereal Crown and Txekri forces held their new perimeters firmly while sects in south and east Andamonia variously demanded the emperor abdicate, called for federalisation or declared their own independence. Finally, today, on the 18th of November, the emperor gave in to pressure from his government and the masses and much of the Astyrian community, ordering combat troops fighting on the western front to stand down. Included in his speech was a request that Trellinese forces follow suit in a ceasefire, as well as a proposed transition of the eastern Usmalím to Txekri government control. Notably, no mention was made of the Trophy Ports, a stark contrast to his previous denunciations of "tyranny", "treachery" and "draconian measures", and political analysts believe this is the first move to Andamonian acceptance of their return to Trellinese government. Though Andamonia has a long road ahead before it returns to stability, for the Trellinese people the worst seems to be behind.

EMPIRE COLLAPSES AS ASTYRIA LOOKS ON

ZITIAR, ANDAMONIA - The Andamonian Empire has been defeated in its war against the Trellinese Empire, and now appears to be on the brink of an implosion with the risk of creating a social, economic and humanitarian crisis on the Strait of Trellin. The collapse of the Andamonian forces, widely predicted in Astyrian circles, was nonetheless swift and many Astyrian governments appear to be unprepared for the coming storm of instability.

Fighting had largely ceased in the early hours of this morning as it became clear that Imperial authority from Zadé Axochizin no longer held sway amongst the various forces representing the Andamonian government. Without aerial support or modern equipment, the generally disorganised forces of Andomonia, most of whom were either mercenaries or loyal to local warlords, were no match for a crack Trellinese army. Local support also aided the Sidereal Crown, with open defiance of measures imposed from Zadé Axochizin to limit the effectiveness of Trellin's air force.

Yet it was ultimately the deteriorating authority of Emperor Amahuiz and the Andamonian government which doomed the Andamonian Empire's war effort. Soldiers on the ground demonstrated no loyalty to their sovereign whatsoever, and even showed open disdain at a "sinful monarch who had led his nation to ruin." At the expense of Imperial authority rose that of the local warlords; federalisation and increased curbs on imperial authority mattered more than control of Txekrikar.

Attention has now shifted throughout the warzones to what lies next for the battered lands of Txekrikar, and indeed the warring parties of Trellin and Andamonia. For Txekrikar, the path ahead is clear: reunion with the Sidereal Crown and reconstruction. A path is less clear for Trellin. For many years, the recovery of the Trophy Ports and of lost territory on the Andamonian border united Trellinese of varying political viewpoints behind the Crown; the absence of such a goal is predicted by some in the Dangish Empire to lead to disunity in a fractious empire. Andamonia has the toughest future ahead of it. With high levels of decentralisation and incredibly weak imperial authority, many predict a quick demise for the Andamonian crown. Separatism is expected to rise alongside calls for the abolition of the monarchy.

Peace at Last

According to various sources, it appears that the dispute between the Andamonia and Trellin has finally come to a halt, with the much-coveted Trophy Ports officially under Trellinese control. This has come as the conclusion of a long-running conflict, with many harsh words exchanged and even occasionally resulting in military skirmishes, but finally culminating in full out war. It appears that this conflict has resulted in the almost near total collapse of the Andamonian regime, which will without a doubt cause considerable chaos and suffering in the future.

In addition, it is unfortunate how many lives have to be shed or exposed to unnecessary suffering for these few scraps of land, which although are indeed of some strategic value, are really more feudal relics from older times - which have unfortunately persisted as sources of conflict up till modern day. We hope that all sides can hence reconcile over the conflict eventually, and work together to rebuild a stable society that can together benefit from and contribute to the prosperity of Astyria.

In a written statement produced as assented to by the Kaiser, it is quoted that the Rombergian government shall be monitoring the situation closely, and that humanitarian aid shall be forthcoming should the situation demand of it. In addition, the sending of peacekeeping forces to contain the unrest in Andamonia is being considered.

A worthy opponent

By now, it is clear that while there were non-insignificant losses posed to Coalition forces in the daring raid on Coalition bases by the air forces of the Yellow Star Republic, by and large the operation has been a failure with most of the nation's air defense capability all but knocked out. Yet credit must be given when credit is due, even when it means presenting an opponent in good light.

At about 2150 Operation time over the skies of Matvayev Airbase, Su-35 pilots of the Imperial Armed Forces announced a direct missile hit on its direct predecessor counterpart operated by the Republic, an Su-27 but the pilot managed to eject and parachute. This shooting was quickly observed by ground observers, and an infantry battalion was dispatched to intercept the pilot. Successful in their mission, our soldiers managed to surround the downed pilot, but refusing to surrender, the pilot drew his pistol, identified as a Makarov, and opened fire. Sergeant Mikhail Schneider, 24, was killed by a direct shot to the head, while another of his comrades was also injured in the shootout before the pilot was silenced in a hail of Rombergian gunfire.

Dog tags found on the pilot identified him as Flight Officer Arnor Fjolssen, 26. It is currently unknown if he has any next of kin.

Although Officer Fjolssen was fighting on behalf of an aggressive regime intent on annexing neighbouring sovereign nations, we must see him in context. His courage in making the last stand, and loyalty to his nation in choosing to fight rather than surrender serves as an important example of honour that should be viewed as an example to Rombergians - despite his affiliation.

As a result, he shall be allowed a full military funeral, and in a special act by the Kaiser, shall be decorated by the Kaiser for his actions. He truly is a worthy opponent.

His body will be transported by land to the frontlines by next week under a flag of truce, and Central Military Command will do their best to ensure that he will be viewed fairly and favourably by his comrades. While it may prove to be a propaganda boost for the other side, we believe that the viking code of honour and battle applies universally, even to our adversaries.

Quoting an anonymous message by a General in the military, it is said that the selections for a new range of Rombergian military weapons are almost complete, although due to security reasons, no further information can be observed at this point. It is expected that these new weapons can be seen on the annual National Parade, on the 15th of March.

Haguenau will be fission-free by 2021, vows Secretary Beaubien
Amidst national debate on the future of Haguenau's power supply, the Haguenau Secretary of Energy and Science has announced plans to decommission all nuclear fission reactors by 2021.

Angoulême - Secretary Michael Beaubien, Haguenau's Secretary of Energy and Science, held a brief press conference today in Angoulême, during which he announced that his office is planning on having all of Haguenau's nuclear fission reactors decommissioned by the end of 2021. The announcement comes amidst a heated nationwide debate over the future of Haguenau's electricity supply, in which many parties advocate for the extension of life of current fission reactors and the commissioning of new fission reactors.

Amongst cited reasons for this decision were the decreasing Haguenau's dependence on non-renewable energy, mitigation against the inherent dangers of nuclear fission, and curbing the expansion of open-air mines in the mountainous region of Chablais, where Haguenau's supply of thorium is extracted.

The only active power plant currently scheduled for decommission is the Plamondon Nuclear Power Plant, which will be shut down in 2018. The Plamondon Nuclear Power Plant is the only Pressurised Water Reactor-type nuclear power plant currently in operation in Haguenau. It was commissioned in 1968, before the Molten Salt Reactors gained popularity and became the preferred reactor type over PWRs.

The Gentilly Nuclear Power Plant, near Lisbourg, will see its license expire in 2027. However, no announcements have yet been made as to whether it will be decommissioned, retrofitted, or if its license will be extended, as it is common with nuclear reactors that have worked optimally during their lifespan.

The Castelnou Nuclear Power Plant and the Tourtour Nuclear Power Plant are set to have their license expire in 2030 and in 2034, respectively. The Loubressac Power Plant, which had to undergo a premature retrofit in 1991 due to a technical flaw in the original reactors constructed in 1971, will have its license expire in 2041.

As a Crown corporation, Soléctro, Haguenau's national electricity company, which operates the vast majority of the nation's power plants, including all of its nuclear power plants, is obliged to follow demands made by His Majesty's Government, unless they challenge the Government in court for serving against the interest of the public.

When asked for comments regarding Secretary Beaubien's announcement, Gérald Tremblay, spokesperson for Soléctro, said only that most of Haguenau's existing nuclear reactors are fit to service Haguenau for at least another decade, and that even when a reactor approaches its license expiration, it can be retrofitted or be re-certified and receive a license extension for many more years of service.

For Soléctro's nuclear operations, this is the second major issue to appear this month. Just one week ago, mining giant Montessus' CEO Fabien Lafayette has announced that Montessus will not be seeking to renew its agreement with Soléctro regarding Uranium-235 extraction, set to expire in February of 2016, which currently services the Plamondon Nuclear Power Plant. This announcement suggests that Soléctro will have to seek an alternative source for the nuclear fuel to continue operating the station, possibly from overseas. However, Montessus has announced that it is already conducting talks with Soléctro to renew their thorium supply agreement.

Académie Fédérale Professor François Boulanger, famous advocate for nuclear energy, claims that following this new roadmap would be a terrible waste of existing facilities. Additionally, Boulanger warns that Haguenau will be forced to seek energy from overseas as supply will fall below demand, since the combined output of future facilities, including the proposed Pérade-1 hydroelectric dam project in the canton of La Pérade, will not be sufficient to fulfil the drop in supply that will occur with the decommissioning of current nuclear power plants.

Haguenau's five nuclear power plants, which operate 13 reactors in total, currently generate 14.60 GW of electricity. The Pérade-1 project, if approved, is expected to be able to provide upwards to 5.75 GW of electricity. All projects currently under construction are expected to only generate 2.3 GW of additional electricity. The Diract Institute's AESTUS fusion reaction project can provide an additional 450 MW if successful, however, full-scale operation is not expected to take place before 2025.

New Years' Referenda Results

In continuation of a tradition since the days of the Second Principality, direct democracy has always been a central value espoused by the government of the Imperial Realm of Romberg. As such, it has been a tradition for the nation to hold citizens' referendums each year on New Years' Day to determine major policy changes undertaken by the government. Abstained votes are counted as a rejection of said change. The results are included below.

1. International Membership

A) Ratify the Concordat of the Three Crowns.

Support 92%, Oppose 8%.

Romberg's membership in the pact confirmed.

B1) Join the E10 organisation as a full member.

Support 40%, Oppose 60%.

B2) Join the E10 organisation as an observer.

Support 73%, Oppose 27%.


As such, Romberg shall not join E10 as a full member, but would instead seek to join it as an observer. Nonetheless, the government, which has inclined to not participate in E10 in any capacity, issued a statement recognising the referendum results. The government also reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining free and fair trade as its international economic policy, and will continue and expand cooperation with foreign nations including those party to E10.

2. Domestic Concerns.

A) Reduce the nation's reliance on nuclear energy.

Support 48%, Oppose 52%.

Defeated by a small majority, there will be no major change to the energy source composition of the nation in the short term, although the government has reaffirmed its dedication to increasing both research and development, and actual implementation of renewable energy sources, and will continue its policy of further reducing the nations' electrical needs on fossil fuels.

B) Scrap mandatory conscription.

Support 19%, Oppose 81%.

Support for military service in its current form is strong, and current measures will be continued. More efforts will be in place to ensure the welfare of conscripts, while still presenting a challenging environment designed to instill combat readiness.

Looking Back at Our Past

In an unprecedented constitutional amendment, the Kaiser has also announced a slight modification to the nobility system of the nation. A new class of nobles will be created, known as hereditary nobles, and would largely follow their own house rules like that of other nations. To not cause an impact to the current political system, these hereditary nobles are not accorded any rights normally associated with nobility, except for the ability to use their titles and the fact that their nobility rank is fixed and would not devolve over generations back to the status of commoner. These persons are also not forced to adopt a clan according to geography as current nobles are, and no special form of address is required.

In addition, this is a purely cultural move, as no current family or person is allowed to be created a hereditary noble - whether they have been ennobled for their service, been passed a devolved title through inheritance or remain a commoner. All hereditary noble families must be established by cosntitutional decree, and must have contributed significantly to the nation for at least the past 300 years.

For this first elevation to hereditary status, the following families are hence hereby considered hereditary Rombergian nobles:

House of Hofendr - Prinz/Prinzessin von Hofendr

The former ruling family of the Yellow Star Republic, the remaining direct line descendants of the family are now situated in Romberg, and have been prominent business owners, managers and philanthropists since. In recognition of this and their previous rule of the Republic, they are hence awarded the title of Prince in recognition of their titles in pretence.

House of Hohenstein - Herzog/Herzogin von Hohenstein

One of the most famous magnate families in Romberg, they are one of the oldest families known to the nation, and their history has long been significant to Rombergian history due to their status as pre-eminent landowners. Producing several kings in the classical period, they have in addition been the only known Rombergian noble house awarded an Imperial noble rank, that of Imperial Count or Reichsgraf. In addition, in the period of elective monarchy, they were considered the hereditary representatives of the nation should the actual Kaiser be unrecognized. Having also contributed significantly to the independence effort of the nation following GAW1, they are hence given the rank of Duke.

House of Tserdynov - Freiherr/Freiin von Tserdynov

An important Northern dynasty, they have been instrumental to reconciliation between the Slavic and Nordic divisions of the Rombergian people, and in later days reuniting the populace with a unified Rombergian identity as opposed to religious or ethnic divides. Being great patrons of the arts as well, they are hence given the rank of Baron.

House of Högel - Freiherr/Freiin von Högel

Long-term diplomats and soldiers, they are considered one of the few loyalist noble families to resist the Glisandian faction in the last civil war and yet survive to this day. Always being a supporter to Rombergian independence and offering invaluable support to the populace in turbulent years, their influence remains great, with the head of the III being one of its members. The aftermath of Trellin's war with Andamonia has had yet another unforeseen development: drug-running. As the grip of local government is increasingly loose in the interior and along the Andamonian coastline, particularly the Olahu Peninsula, legitimate business and trade has tanked. With soldiers deserting daily and both the Emperor and First Speaker having fled, the country's neighbours are monitoring it warily, apprehensive of any fragmentation and social collapse. Already three groups in the country have formally seceded, though their recognition is limited to one another and, in the case of the Free Socialist State of the Ubeylatl, the Yellow Star Republic.

With this breakdown of regular social structure, tied in with a crash in employment from an already-distressing 56.3% to below 40%, it should come as no surprise that large numbers of Andamonian people are turning to alternative sources of income, not all of which are entirely above board.

The Khorvu-registered yacht Akha Akkig was intercepted at around eight o'clock this morning by the CTT Paltrihi, which operates out of the Port of Cadenza. The Paltrihi, one of the navy's two corvettes, was patrolling south of the Eth Khadeg when it was ordered north on a tip from the Kur'zheti Coast Guard. The yacht, which usually travels north to Nikolia by way of the Eth Bandig, had been forced off her usual route by the eastward passage of Tropical Storm Lonadh. It came in sight of the naval vessel just beyond Tarsira Head, heading north again, and was intercepted after a brief attempt at flight. Marines from the Paltrihi arrested the six men aboard after discovering a cargo of cocaine with an estimated street value as high as 75 million Tezahra. The haul is among the largest taken in the empire in recent years, and the largest in the Duchy since nearly 30,000 kg of cocaine was seized off one vessel in 2013, in waters off Torim Viqalka.

Of those arrested, five are reported to be Andamonian nationals. The skipper of the Akha Akkig, one Yarso Erugik, is a Trellinese citizen from Rha'gutza. All six are expected to be tried in the Lema Courthouse by November. The boat's owner has not yet been named but is believed to be a member of the Nikolian gang bringing the drugs into the country.

According to reports from the navy, both the number and size of drug hauls have been increasing year on year. Since 2010 over Ŧ1 billion has been seized, according to a spokesman for Admiral Torënil Pamma, the Duke of Pammez. While the admiralty credits this to its new vessels, commissioned over the last two years, the increasing financial difficulties in Andamonia and other areas, including parts of Trellin, is undeniably a major factor. The outward flow of illegal substances through the Straits of Jajich is unfortunately facilitated by relaxed traffic monitoring, a result of de-isolation and Dangish pressure to open up trade. While welcomed by much of the international community, this same development has been heavily criticised by the Cadenzan Commerce Board and by Kur'zhet's Minister for Industry and Trade, both asserting that excessive deregulation is only harming the island protectorates' roles in Trellinese-Astyrian trade. Whether or not this is the case, offset as it is by the renewed growth in the imperial economy, recent events make it abundantly clear that something must be done to contain and prevent illegal smuggling.

LANNARK QUITS AS CONSERVATIVES LOOK TO 2016

NEW LONDON, DUNGEYLAND - Jon Lannark MP has resigned as leader of the Conservative and Monarchist Party after admitting the party's poor performance in Nashensteg elections had taken him and the party by surprise. Devastated, Lannark resigned in a press conference, commenting his "true sorrow" for the scale of the Conservative defeat in Nashensteg dominion elections yesterday. The elections, which saw the Liberal Party returned to another four year term with an increased share of the vote, saw the Conservatives nearly beaten into third place by the Socialists.

In an emotional speech, Lannark declared that the reins of conservatism and monarchism must now be held by another, while calling on the party to show solidarity and strength in the face of defeat, rather than despair at the success of its ideological enemies. The empire, Lannark urged, was a fundamentally conservative nation and that the party had to return to its roots and values, whilst continuing to modernise. The task, he stated, could not be completed by him in the shadow of the unexpected defeat in Nashensteg.

On a night of continual disappointment, the Conservatives lost thirteen seats in the 60 member parliament - including those of the Nashensteg Conservative leader, Mark Stark, and the former First Lord, Huey Kant. The Liberals saw their majority increased from a slim 32 seats to a vast 41, while the Socialists and the Dangish Unionists each gained 2 seats. Lannark had previously stated that "Nashensteg is Conservative land" and that the provincial election was a testing ground for the Imperial elections expected in 2018.

Having phoned Lord Scylla to concede, Lannark urged fellow Conservative supporters and activists to look past the "short-term bleak future" and to "keep faith" in the movement. "While we may have lost the election, our arguments will not go away," he said. Ending defiantly, he said "Conservatism will rise again," before announcing his intention to resign from the House of Commons. Speculation has immediately turend to possible contenders for the leadership, including the shadow chancellor, Eddard Mell; the shadow foreign secretary, Sansa Hume; the shadow health minister, Danielle McVey; and the ex-Chancellor Lord Hooting.

Though the party leader need not necessarily be a member of the Commons, it is widely expected that the Conservatives will seek to appoint another MP as leader. Mell is further expected to be the frontrunner in the race, and is generally understood to be the candidate of the right of the party. In contrast, Sansa Hume is widely typecast as a Lannarkite continuity candidate, while comparisons have already been drawn between McVey and the relatively leftist former First Lord Baron Clarke.

Sidereal Crown praises the organisation's "admirable goals"

In a pleasant break from tales of sorrow on Trellin's eastern doorstep, the Sidereal Crown has issued a commendation of the GGA, a young organisation dedicated to improving its homeland. "The GGA has taken on itself the onerous task of renewing a desolate land," wrote Her Majesty Queen Azara, "and even in so short a time it is ready to reap the rewards of its labours. We only wish more people were prepared to do what is necessary to protect their livelihoods and heritage as they have done."

The GGA's homeland has seen its fair share of difficulty in the last few years, its soil ravaged by invasive foreign agents and large tracts of agricultural land being left severely degraded. Local communities were forced to seek outside help as they struggled to protect their land. Help was slow to trickle in, however, until these same communities realised they could achieve something together. "Most of the people around here are just poor farmers," one spokesman for the group told us, "not war heroes, not refugees. If we need help, we have to help ourselves. Change starts at home."

The GGA was formed in early 2014, much of its membership having little practical experience in the field, but all came with willing hands. Later in the year, it found its numbers swelling as veterans of the war returned home to find desolation. Those with connections contacted Nikolian suppliers, who procured large quantities of equipment and moved it into the territory through various backchannels. "A lot of what we do is underground, tackling the roots of the problem. Some of this stuff, rotten to the core," the spokesman said, gesturing at a labelled map on the wall. "But it's still important to have aircraft, so you can cover a wider area to combat this pestilence".

Like so many similar groups, the GGA operates on a basis of small, local networks. Its members rarely know many outside their given area, and the organisation's leadership shuns the limelight. "A little publicity goes a long way," one of the GGA's leaders, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Herald, "but we're far from finished cleansing this land. It's not time to put our names out and seek personal glory."

Though it is clear there is a long way to go before the province is restored to its former glory, the Crown certainly has the right idea in praising the efforts of the Gerint Gardeners' Association.

Metamorphosis

Change is in the air, as millions flocked to celebrate the 37th anniversary of the nation yesterday.

In a televised address to the people, the Kaiser spoke of more turbulent times ahead as various shifting allegiances and power blocs may result in the destabilisation of Astyria as a whole, and at the same time urged Rombergians to remain united even if threats should arise, and preserve Rombergian independence and neutrality. In addition, he has once again called for a peaceful resolution to various conflicts happening throughout the region, and urged all sides to exercise restraint and hope for greater Astyrian solidarity in the future. To this, he has expressed regret that Rombergian forces are still deployed abroad, but promised that his troops will be returning home soon.

Following on from this, rumours were confirmed that the Kaiser was in talks with the Duke of Hohenstein over a transfer of titles, and that officially the control of the Hohenstein title will be shared by both the Kaiser and the Duke, with the Duke retaining the Ducal title which the Kaiser would use an upgraded version - the King of Hohenstein. The Kingdom and all its subsidiary territories would hence be collectively known as the Royal-Ducal Lands of Hohenstein, with the ducal title appended to recognize the role of the Duke in the matter, and following mutual agreement. Romberg will hence be known as the Imperial Crown of Romberg, with the ancient Principality title still being valid, and subsidiary to the Imperial title. The entire national entity is hence then known as the United Realms of the Imperial Crown of Romberg and the Royal-Ducal Lands of Hohenstein, short form The United Realms of Greater Romberg and with "Romberg" as its informal form. The Kaiser has also then officially transferred the grounds of Hohenstein Castle and the Arctic Islands from the Crown to the Kingdom-Duchy. This is a purely ceremonial move, and in reality there are no differences between the entities other than name. However, the usage of the new title, the transfer of all non-mainland holdings into this entity and the words of the Kaiser has piqued the imaginations of many, with some viewing that this showed the ambition of the Kaiser in acquiring further unclaimed lands to the South, and possibly further expanding Romberg's role in Astyria as a non-aligned member.

Later in the day, the Kaiser was observed attending the annual Victory Day Parade on the streets of Holmgard, where the newest batch of Rombergian weaponry, the result of the past years' work and testing was shown to the world. Most notably, almost all non-naval equipment present were either renamed and improved, or manufactured from completely new designs. It is expected that by the end of the year, all Rombergian active units will receive the new equipment, with all Landwehr and reserve units being also upgraded within three years. It is expected that the military spendings of the previous year would hence experience up to a 25% year-on increase, although this should decrease again this year and beyond, as the next major overhaul of the Rombergian military is not due for at least another 10 years. It is expected that current military forces deployed abroad will not be receiving new equipment however, as further military reorganisations are expected in the wake of new military procurements.

Noble Customs

Following the presentation of sufficient documents to government, we are pleased to announce the official recognition of two more families that shall hence be awarded Hereditary Noble status:

House of Tamarich, granted title of Prinz. Part of the former ruling house of Riysa, this branch of the family emigrated to the shores of Romberg shortly after the collapse of their monarchy towards the end of GAW1, seeking better opportunities in the newly independant nation. Bringing with them solid nation-building expertise, they contributed much to the integration of Muslims into mainstream society, and helped convince many to join the military and civil service. Since then, they are involved in many philanthropic ventures, and serve as a shining example of their faith and the role of minorities in the nation, ever more important in the turbulent times of today.

House of Schwartzenatter, granted title of Freiherr. Originally descending from an illegitimate son of a Kaiser in medieval times, they have since been serving as the Kaiser's advisers and sometime military leaders for many generations since then. Though significant rebellions and attempts to take the throne through guile have dampened their reputation somewhat, with the conversion into an elective monarchy, they have finally put their claims to rest and therefore shall deserve this rank on account to the contributions they have made to the nation - contributions that must be recognized.

Military Renaming

In a short declaration made by the Kaiser as supreme commander in chief of the Imperial Armed Forces of Romberg, it has now been confirmed that with the renaming of the official name of the nation, the military forces of the nation shall be referred to as the Rombergian Imperial-Royal Armed Forces. Rombergian naval ships shall hence bear the prefix Kaiserlich-Königlich Schiff (KKS).

Mystery solved?

Following an intensive 3-year long study by the Imperial Academy in Holmgard, Rombergian researchers claimed to have finally decoded the Voynich Manuscript, a hitherto undeciphered text that was dated to the Renaissance. According to them, it was a simple abjad of Old Rombergian - the ancient language of the nation before the Germanic and Slavonic branches diverged. Due to the removal of all consonants, and various glyphs used to represent each remaining letter, the text hence remained undeciphered for such a long time. It is claimed that the obscurity of the Old Rombergian language contributed in no small part to this as well. Nonetheless, this discovery has hence been hailed as one of the greatest finds in Rombergian literature ever, and all efforts are being taken place to secure the book and bring it to Rombergian shores.

It is currently unknown who the author of the book is, considering the significant distance between Romberg and the Southern nations, although scholars have pointed to the fact that a very small number of Rombergians have indeed made this perilous crossing. So far though, the precise author is not known, although a more detailed analysis of the text would hopefully shed light on the true writer of the text.

Full translation of the book is underway, although several sections have already been complete. Notably, numerous references to hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana appear in the text, and it is hypothesised that some of the book's contents may be spiritual or mystical in nature. This may also explain the nature of the illustrations within the book itself. It is estimated that it would take at least another two years before a complete modern Rombergian version of the Manuscript would be ready. However, the decipherment of the text itself would nonetheless be published in the journal Ancient Rombergian History next month, and the researchers may be well on their way to receiving noble status in recognition of their work.

After two years of successful business within the territory of Britonisea, Pine Grove Restaurants were ordered to close their 50 locations in that country by the official communique of the Britannual Foodstores. Britannual Foodstores then shamelessly proposed opening a single gargantuan location in the Britonish capital, Doportedas, "as a sign of good will" in order to hopelessly recover the losses Pine Grove Restaurants suffered.

The officials at the Pine Grove Restaurants responded accordingly, by kindly declining the non-beneficial, and even offending offer by the Britannual Foodstores, and called their former employees to emigrate to any other Pine Grove restaurant in the world. Britannual Foodstores in the follow up letter further expressed sadeness that they had to close the restaurants under excuse that the population reduced in the cities where the restaurants were located at, that many restaurants got a heavy decline of customers, and that the Britonish government prioritised development of the cities Doportedas, Eaux and Quickenden.

Following the happenings in Britonisea, the Minister of Commerce and Industry has sent letters to 24 Nikolian companies having branches in Britonisea in order to inform them about the situation that happened to the fellow Astyrian business.
"This is scandal!" the international politics analyser Marko Aleksejski commented "It is shocking for a serious nation to boot off a well developed foreign business out under the excuse that "their economy is failing". It is absurd to reduce the number of businesses when you're trying to boost your economy. This can also be a political act pointed at the Neu Engollian Confederacy, or generally at foreign companies in Britonisea, as they recently removed Bank of Maltropia from their market. I am nearly sure that this was all the effect of the recent change in Britonish government, and that they are slowly shifting to the left." he finished.

Yearly Plans

Today, September 15, 2015 marks the beginning of another Government Year. This particular date has been set at exactly half a year after National Day, and is traditionally the day where the official government policy for the next year shall be revealed.

This year is no exception, with many significant changes occurring to both domestic and foreign policy. Internally, environmentalism is high on the agenda, with many changes in the works. Being a subarctic country, the United Realms of Romberg is no stranger to the threat of global warming, and has always been trying various efforts against it, although this marks the first year that a coherent government plan would be enacted. With a grace period of five years, oil and coal extraction in the United Realms shall be banned, signalling a significant decrease of government support to fossil fuels and as reserves dwindle. Natural Gas though however remains on the agenda, given its profitability, and foreign oil companies are being offered incentives to switch to gas instead. With large proven gas reserves, it seems like natural gas extraction will continue for at least some time to come. Already, the United Realms do not use any fossil fuels to generate its own electricity, with nuclear power making the bulk and other renewable sources providing the rest. In the future, this means that fossil fuels would be imported to the nation, although most likely in the form of crude oil since sources within government have stated that there is no current plan to cut down on the oil refining industry in the short term. Various crude oil products are after all an important part of the United Realms' GDP.

In addition, the Kaiser has promised a full overhaul of the nation's transport network, promising that the government would place extra resources into developing its mass transit network, which so far includes buses, trains, and a subway network in the capital city of Holmgard.

With this shift, government has also promised to conduct significant shifts in urban policy to enable towns shift to a post-fossil fuel extraction economy. The major coal mining town of Kronstadt for one would be developed into a secondary ski resort to Reichtenberg - and it is believed that in the future, gradually reached parity to allow further development of Reichtenberg as the fortified military redoubt of the nation. In addition, with observation to many decades of decay and neglect, the Kaiser has taken it as a personal initiative to develop Ysborg as not only a major fishing hub, shifting it away from Sturmhåll, which would remain as a trade and military base, but also as a cultural centre to showcase and preserve the nation's Nordic and Viking culture. It is hoped that with significant government investment, both cities could fit into their new role and reach new heights.

As for foreign policy, it appears that the current direction will not be changed much, although the current state of affairs in which the nation would further take part in Astyrian affairs is expected to continue, and perhaps in an even greater extent. There are even claims of territorial expansion on unclaimed land, although no evidence of such has been suggested. Nonetheless, for example as a sign of greater awareness of pan-astyrian issues, a review of the current immigration and asylum policies have been launched as instructed by the Kaiser, where the committee of the Grand Council shall be consulted on said issue. This is believed to be a response to the anticipation of possible refugees entering the United Realms' borders as a result of various conflicts taking place in Astyria.

Speaking of committees, current generals of the Imperial-Royal Armed Forces as well as the Defense Committee of the Grand Council have also been convened to develop a new military plan for the future, following the success of the rearmament programme. So far, it is said that there may be a reduction of active military units in exchange for the increase of reserve units and paramilitary, to further professionalise the military and due to the fact that although Astyria appears to have become less peaceful in recent years. there do not appear to be significant threats to the territorial and national integrity of the Nation, thus meaning less of a requirement for an overly large military. It also appears that foreign units have been suggested to be reactivated, to provide a quick route for immigration as well as increasing manpower, as would the use of certain disused military unit titles which have been previously discarded following union with Glisandia, including but not limited to "Grenzer" for border guards and "Kaiserjåger" to denote elite units. Little information is given at the moment though, and it is estimated that it would be at least one month before a preliminary review can be obtained.

There are also numerous minor changes that are currently being proposed, although notably many are of a grammatical nature, and thus while important from a legal point of view, would not be particularly important for the general population.

Ghawkins and Gaul state police forces are making arrests for social media posts that threaten retaliatory violence or intend to incite retaliatory violence against the police. At the same time, some members of state police forces are posting threatening statements and, as reported by Jacques Poulain, are not being arrested. Now, responding to the terror attack against an airliner in Paritte and government and media incitements to violence, private citizens are issuing incitements to commit genocide against non-native Gauls.

Examples of statements being made on Twitter:

“…f**king immigrants I always hated and will always hate them #killallimmigrants”

“#killimmigrants is the only viable response…”

“KILL ALL IIMIGRANTS! WE HAVE TOLERATED THEM LONG ENOUGH!”

It will be interesting to see whether people using the #killallimmigrants hash-tag and making these very serious incitements to genocide will be prosecuted, as is explicitly required by the law. We shall see. As noted above, people are currently being punished for far less, but only for statements that allegedly threaten a Western states power.
Also interesting are reports by several other domestic media outlets that there has been "greater ostracization of EATA originating businesses", further highlighting the discriminatory, and at times even outright racist practices that seem to be imbedded so deeply in Gaulic culture. Many across the country seem to make no distinction between a multi-national governmental organization and its policies and the actions of citizens who sought to flee those very lands, and now many innocent East Astyrians are feeling the pain.

This goes hand in hand with a traditional anti-immigration policy commonly found in Ghawkins, which states that new arrivals to the nation must adopt Ghawkins customs and traditions or face immediate deportation, even if it means certain death in their home lands. Speaking your native language, publicly practicing your native religion, or even wearing your native dress on the streets of Ghawkins are all grounds for deportation, according to national law, a mandatethat does nothing but increase xenophobia and boost the belief of many that foreigners are insignificant, and are only meant to be victims of indiscriminate bombing or pawns in petty regional politics.

Also in keeping with reporting that highlights events useful towards expansion of Ghawkins/Western state power domestically and internationally while suppressing/downplaying events that would serve to restrict and limit the already historically unprecedented scope of Ghawkins violent expansionism, a recent terror attack of a Rombergian armored column recently in Glisandia has been largely overlooked or downplayed in Western corporate media. Most papers ran almost no stories on the event, despite its footage appearing on websites across the region, and most outlets reported much more on the score of the local soccer games than they did on the deaths of armed forces members fighting to defeat the forces of tyranny abroad.

While the idea of restricting what people draw or write is of course absurd, the West is uniquely guilty of doing this (and protecting its criminal actors who do it), both through repressive and deadly direct action and supporting other repressive regimes, as Poulain yesterday noted when he said the Ghawkins is the country that “invades, bombs, occupies, and props up tyrants more than any other.”

Thousands of Astyrians joining the GGA According to New Senate Report

Between 5,000 and 6,000 Astrians have traveled to Glisandia to join the God's Glisandian Army, a member of the Confederate Senate's Council on Foreign Affairs says stressing that several thousand of them are Confederate citizens.

The Senate officials believe that “the figures are strongly under-estimated,” as foreign fighters are hard to keep track of, Octavius Bronzehammer told The Daily Confederate. "At the Astyrian level, we estimate that 5,000 to 6,000 individuals have left for Glisandia," he told the paper in an interview.

Bronzehammer added that the majority of them perhaps as many as two thousand are Confederate nationals, presenting a further issue for an already growing crisis, as many of these men have received military training as a result of the universal Confederate conscription program. The Senator added that they are eyeing more measures to avoid the suspected fighters leaving Hesperidesian countries, considering “prevention [measures] rather than suppression” of the flow.

“We’ve allotted a budget of 2.5 million credits to provide training of prison and probation staff, as well as that of Confederate prosecutors,” Bronzehammer said.

The Confederacy and her Hesperidesian neighbors are not alone in contributing fighters to the fundamentalist cause either, and several hundred are suspected to have come from Fhiongair and Serretes, with dozens more coming from Nikolia, the Trellinese Empire, and a number of other Western Astyrian states.

The reasons behind the Astyrian leaving are “a desire for adventure, boredom, dissatisfaction with their situation in life or a lack of prospects,” an EATA research team assigned to look into the matter has found, according to the Senator.

He added that the EATA is accelerating the sharing between police forces and court systems of different states, as well as an increase in intelligence exchange.

"We would also be willing to extend our hand in friendship with the nations of the ATO, in order to create a joint intelligence program to monitor the escalating situation, but we hold little hope they would be willing to cooperate on such a task” Bronzehammer said.

The God's Glisandian Army (also known as the GGA) currently has control over a significant amount of territory in southern Glisandia and the unoccupied tundra to the nation's west, and has attracted thousands of foreigners to fight in their ranks.

Where is Ghawkins? Many Wonder as Regional Conflicts Rage

With the war in the Yellow Star Republic still in full force and the conflict between Agrincourt and Casegene winding down and in peace talks, many the world over are beginning to wonder where the "prize fighting symbol of democracy" known as Ghawkins is. It would seem to many that they would prefer to have good Gaulic men and women do their dirty work, while they sit back and enjoy the winnings, as we are currently seeing in Agrincourt, where Ghawkinsian troops landed only after the front had been stabilized and never once engaged in active combat.

The fact that Ghawkins was even given a prominent spot at the peace table is abhorrent, and we can almost all bet that the exact same kind of behavior will be seen when the war against the Yellow Star Republic comes into its closing days. Its time to wake up, and let the government of Ghawkins know that Gaul will no longer be used as a pawn for her global schemes. Brave Gaulic soldiers are not going to fight and die for the benefit of a foreign master any longer. I urge you to all start petitions and contact your local representatives and end this outrage once and for all. Hundreds of our countrymen have already sacrificed their lives for them, this needs to end here and now.

And since we are on the subject, where was Ghawkins for all of the other conflicts that have recently erupted in the region? Where were they when the dictator of Terre Azure started slaughtering his people and had to be deposed? Where are they even now, as rebels, bandits, and pirates wreak havoc on the Insula Fera? And why did they not get sent to Lorecia,even though their ally and fellow ATO member Nouvel Ecosse was directly attacked? These are questions we need to ask ourselves, and in light of the events in Ecosse, we should also start to wonder what would happen if Gaul is attacked. Will the government of Ghawkins merely sit back and watch, as they have with Nouvel Ecosse, or will they finally stand up and do something? The present course of events leads me to thing the former is true, and with almost nothing done in the aftermath of the Paritte bombings, I for one am starting to lose hope.

Breaking news emerges from our corner of Astyria as the Senado(National Senate) of the Republic of San Joaquin Valley has approved a measure to assist in the on going conflict across the seas in Ala Moana. Our allies in the Scottopian Isles have teamed up with Neu Engollon & the Blackhelm Confederacy, aswell as additional EATA affiliated nations, who have been fighting across one of the island province of Moana in the country during recent weeks in an attempt to capture drug kingpin turned druglord Uncle Opru, and dismantle his 'empire'. The conflict first arose after the Ala Moana government had abandoned their positions to an uprising by Uncle Opru's henchmen. At the same time, the handling of the situation created a division in the island nations armed forces & population where on the main island of Ala, fighting has broken out between the rebels & loyalists, which has made the situation brewing with Opru all the muddier. While the fractions engage in a 3 front civil war against each other for supremacy, the population of the country has taken the brunt of the damage.

Although at first supporting of the Ala Moana government, various nations including our own quickly retracted their support after their brutal attempt at stopping the rebellion by suspending the democratic process & unleashing harsh reprisals to opposing parties. Scottopian Isles forces were the first to lead a cause against the ensuing humanitarian crisis on their doorstep and are in the process of capturing the Druglords stronghold, the provincial capitol, Lawehana. Seeing the need for fresh forces and wishing to take a seat in regional on goings, the Senado voted 58-17 in favor of sending forces of the San Joaquin Valley's Army to the Scottopian Isles where they will be intergrated into the international coalition to face the challanges that await them.

Chancallor Rejects Valleys Senado Use of Airspace

Reports from Nauvoo City state that the Chancallor of the Nova Deseret has denied the San Joaquin Valley use of its airspace begining immedietly for an untold amount of time. The Valley Republic, which is landlocked and completly surrounded by Nova Deseret, has recently annouced plans to assist EATA forces as the Ala Moana Crisis continues. Anyalists beleive this is a move set by the high command of the Nova Deseret elite against the government of San Joaquin for siding with the East Astyrian Treaty Organization.

So far, all outgoing air transport from San Joaquin Valley has been suspended, but international flights continue to arrive in such cities as Bakersfield, Fresno & Port Stockton. Various border checkpoints on the ground were still open to vehicular traffic, but some claim some where turned back at the border, reminding some of the actions taken back in the 1990s. Although the San Joaquin River does flow towards the Bahia Bay, the coarse does lead through Nova Deseret, leaving accsess to international waters is subjected to an official government clearance.

The Nova Deseret government stance upon the Ala Moana Crisis remains the same, where they call for the removal of EATA forces upon the nation, and for all parties to consult dialouge rather than physical action. More updates to come.

Heavy snow storm hits Kíjmaförsz. Public services working on clearing major roads in the city

The Fhiongairian Meteorological Institute has declared the highest weather warning (red meteoalarm) to most of the Northern Fhiongair as the snow storm that started 2 days ago caused blockage of major roads and railways in this part of the country. In the nation's capital, Kíjmaförsz, state of emergency has been declared as the severe weather conditions had caused damage to the power grid, which led to power outbreak in several parts of the city. In the last two days, 43 injuries were reported to the Kíjmaförsz Emergency Medical Services and by the preliminary reports, there were two deaths caused by low temperature, which dropped to -18°C this morning.
All public services are engaged in resolving the situation, together with military mountain units. Due to the weather conditions, all air traffic has been suspended in the area of Kíjmaförsz, Szént Míkúls and Támpó, with all commercial flights being redirected to cities not affected by the snow storm.
Citizens are advised to stay in their homes, to dress warmly and to remain calm. Should they require any aid, they can request for by calling numbers of the emergency services: Police - 333, Paramedics - 334, Firefighters - 335, Red Cross of Fhiongair - 442-1164.

The Eastern Velar: fifteen months on
Txekrikar finally reunified as Andamonia continues to fragment

Today marks the end of Andamonian sovereignty over the eastern Usmalím. The transitional government established by King Mahrim II and Emperor Amahuiz in the wake of the war of 2014 has been formally dissolved as of 12 o'clock noon (11 o'clock Trellinese Central Time), and almost 20,000 square kilometres of land east of the Baira is now restored to Txekri administration. This marks the end of more than ninety years of Andamonian governance - some call it occupation - in the Usmalím and comes just over eighty years after the western Usmalím was reunified with Txekrikar in the 1930s.

The formal handover of authority was performed by Prince Eshkan ha'Roita of Txekrikar and the interim governor at Reu (formerly Rehahu), Governor T. Sitamui in Reu's city council building before both men made their official statements in front of gathered press on the building's steps.

Prince Eshkan's statement praised the Andamonian administration for accommodating his nation's needs, facilitating the transition from the Andamonian laws and legal system to those of Txekrikar. "It has been a privilege working with this temporary administration," he said, "and I must commend their willingness to ease the process as much as possible. They have gone above and beyond the call of their duty to make Txekrikar's newest and most longed-for citizens feel like they were coming home, without them ever needing to leave it."

For a city which was so recently in the middle of a war zone, Reu seemed the epitome of peace time celebration as patriotic citizens hung Txekri flags from their windows. Across the Principality the reunification has met with almost unanimous joy and jubilation, though more sceptical elements allege that allowing the territory to enter the state will bring with it the division that currently plagues Andamonia.

Andamonian internal politics were a precarious balance before the war erupted, with countless sects across the empire a powder keg waiting only for the right spark to throw the nation into a chaos. The defeat of the imperial military through October and November spelled the end of these militias' confidence in their emperor, and rebel groups in the Ubeylatl and Olahu regions renounced their allegiance, sparking a new period of civil war. Even before the War of the Eastern Velar ended, Andamonia's First Speaker fled the country, leaving his emperor to fend for himself. Amahuiz continues to fend for himself, having abandoned the capital for the coastal city of Cevrazu which remains a loyal bastion. His military has faced so much insurrection and desertion that, as early as August last year, he turned to Queen Azara for help. Now the majority of pro-government forces on the ground in Andamonia are Trellinese troops, who just over a year ago were fighting against that same regime. What Amahuiz's fate will be once order is restored is unclear, and will probably be in the hands of his people. Some are predicting a new republic will rise out of the ashes, perhaps even with First Speaker Mocat Xekomo at its head, but only time will tell what road the reborn Andamonia will follow.

On the streets of Reu, however, and of Zitiar which has four times in the last 150 years been a hotly contested city, peace and prosperity are the only future people can see. Tranquility has been restored to the Trellinese Empire, and all its constituent parts are now unified once again. As Azara V lends her full support to our eastern neighbour, it may only be a matter of time before the old, so often reopened wounds between Trellin and Andamonia are finally fully healed.

Political reform: the future of Trellin?
» Standardised provincial system could be next on Azara's agenda

To outside observers, the subdivision of the Trellinese Empire is a cause of regular confusion. Three monarchies with one monarch and two crowns, three or four protectorates and innumerable provinces without any hint of standardised terminology are compounded by the, often as not, inconsistent literature on the matter. The fact of the matter is that Trellin's twenty-odd provinces do not have equal status and privilege, nor do Hysera's three. Only the six counties of the Isles of Velar hold any claim to internal consistency.

In the eyes of Astyria, the Sidereal Crown of Queen Azara V has been legitimised as an international player with the reunification of Txekrikar - though the groundwork was laid by her father and the process managed by the Prince, her administration continues to perform admirably in Andamonia's civil war. Trellin's position in Astyrian politics is on solid ground. Yet even Txekrikar brings forward a key issue to the imperial administration: what is Txekrikar's future in the empire? It has been formally undergoing provincialisation since entering the empire in 1963, yet it is still considered a state as often as it is a province. Its military hierarchy remains independent of the Sidereal Crown's, and its negotiation over the Usmalím proved that foreign affairs remain under its own jurisdiction.

The statuses of other units of government are at least as confusing. The City of Asketon seems to operate on a republican basis, as do the Trophy Ports - each with subtle differences in its system of government. Phrases like "territory", "fiefdom" and "duchy" are bandied about as though they hold some meaning while in truth they have none, except to appease the noble families who willingly joined the empire or to humiliate those who were conquered by force. The County of Pelna is divided into numerous local administrative units, each with its own policies; councillors in the County Kur'mali for its entire territory. Laws and regulations in one province may bear no relation to those in another. The Isles of Velar have different age limits to the rest of the empire, meaning that if a twenty year-old Idisamoan drives his car onto a ferry for Parthenope he can't, legally, drive it off, and his licence is considered invalid.

In Trellin and Hysera, such egregious divergences are usually overcome by an imperial edict, but Velar's constitutional parliament and noble conclave have resisted conformity - attacked as cultural imperialism - for over two hundred years. When a young Karindos III attempted to introduce legislative standardisation in 1948, not only was he blocked by the Velaran legislature but a formal complaint was issued against him by its government. To everyone's surprise, Karindos backed down and dropped the proposal.

This incident is representative of a broader trend towards traditionalism and continuity. Even with absolute authority over most of her territory, Azara is likely to find resistance to any effort to standardise her empire, especially in the conservative strongholds of Kur'mala and the south. Despite this, her administration must recognise the growing necessity of standardisation. The empire is at its largest ever extent and highest population, but administrative structures have not changed in centuries in some regions. Managing such a complicated union was enough of a challenge for her father, and it seems unlikely that Azara will delegate any of her considerable authority to an aide. Rather, the most probable and effective solution would be devolving power to a new system of reformed provincial governments, organised along municipal lines with elected councillors.

The city-provinces of the empire have proven that democratic local government is compatible with the absolutist regime. The extent of such dissolution would be up for debate, but Trellin needs capable legislatures, not a capable monarch alone. Azara wields too much personal authority in certain parts of her territory to effectively rule the entire empire, and delegation is no longer an option but a necessity. The only alternative is the unthinkable: a constitutional monarchy. The Ethlorek, Ahéri and Velaran people are all resistant to change, and any solution will be hotly contested throughout the empire. The time to make a decision is now, if Azara is to make an impression as a strong leader for her people. Mahrim II is a tough act to follow, but if she can maintain the momentum he left her she has the potential to be the most successful ruler in a century.
