Artius Holcom Naughtwrain
Image

Race: Human
Gender/Sex: Male
Appearance: As shown by a family portrait, out of uniform. 6' tall, soldierly build. Smells faintly of royalty and soap at all times. Has this symbol branded on his left shoulder. Many scars over his body, the most noticable being located on the dorsal side of right hand.
Equipment: He wears a heavy set of steel calvary curiass armor and tasset, chain mail tabard, helmet, steel greaves and gauntlets. Underneath he wears his non-combatant attire; a abodmen-cut brown leather jacket with the above symbol sewn on the shoulders and back, high leather riding boots and his pictured blue cloak and pants. He brings with him many weapons, a Zweihander flamberge, a Hochland rifle, heater shield, and a broad bladed raiper. He rarely has more than 1 or 2 weapons on his person at any time, not including his concealed knife.
Rucksack of supplies; food, socks, matches, and what little family treasure he could find. He rides upon a black Friesen horse, which carries the heavier supplies and whatever Artius doesn't feel like carrying.

Skills:
>Fearless: Artius has fought against the horrors of the world during his career in the Emperor's armies. The blood dyed legions of Khorne, temptresses of Slaanesh, the writhing Skaven swarms, packs of beastmen, raging Orc hordes. He has stared down beings from beyond reality on the battlefield and emerged victorious over every beast that had stood in his path. He has seen the horrifying weapons the enemies of Sigmar can bring to bear on the battle field, and never once faltered. In his heart, Artius knows he is the fury of the Empire, and knows no fear.

>Calvaryman: Like most seconds sons of noble houses, Artius has been raised more by tutors than parents. Training since he was old enough to hold a sword properly, Artius has had a childhood of rigor and a life of fighting from horseback and on foot. Well educated, well equipped, and experienced, he is extensively versed in all ways of fighting. Swords, guns, and hand to hand are all second nature to him.

>Hardened: What it sounds like. A life preparing for and in the Imperial military has sharpened his reflexes and boosted his natural constitution. He has survived campaigns that would grind average men into dust and endured the roughest conditions imaginable, and never lost his energy and enthusiasm.

>Inspiring: Artius can whip up a rousing speech off the cuff and reinstill courage in those who have lost their nerve, or amp himself up for a fight.

Weaknesses: >Unsubtle: Whether by birth or circumstance, he never learned how to keep a low profile. While he avoids all the pomp and circumstance most of the nobility project out of modesty, he still can't help the natural attention grabbing mannerisms that are inherent to his upbringing.

>Naive: Artius is naturally trusting of senior Imperial officials and is often hesitant to doubt them, and has a difficult time telling lies or keeping track of political networks. Suffice to say, it's a good thing he never got involved in politicking.

>Humanity: While on of Artius' greatest strengths, it is also his greatest weakness. Despite what he has seen on the front lines and behind the nobilities' closed doors, he still fervently believes in his species, and to an extent, their allies. Artius has seen the darkest corners of the human heart surface again and again, yet never shirked in his duty or doubted his faith. He will fight honorably, uphold the law even as it crumbles around him, fight injustice, and help the ill and sick, or give his all trying. As nice and heroic as this sounds, it also means he is easily paralyzed in morally ambiguous situations and can oftentimes be too trusting, and will get unreasonably mad when someone violates his sensibilities.

>Aggressive: An aggressive attitude is befitting of a soldier, but unlike many who are able to drop this when speaking to civilians, his forwardness and brutal honesty makes him pushy and confronting in conversation. He is also likely to spill secrets or start fights when provoked, which is none to difficult.

Bio: Artius is the second born child of a long established noble family, the one of the ruling merchant houses of Salkalten, in the Ostland territories. In following tradition, Artius was destined from his birth to take up arms on behalf of the family and live and die in the Imperial military. While the rest of his family lived the decadent, comfortable life of that the idle wealthy were privileged to, he spent his years under the vigilant eye of his tutors. Everyday, every hour was spent practicing, studying, testing, preparing for the life in the hardships of combat and life in the Imperial army. Slowly but surely he began to shy away from the needless extravagance his family would relish in, and either retreat to the family library and study the sciences with his third sister Emiline or sneak out and to woo a young engineering scholar he had begun to fancy. He did however, still partake in a great many delicacies during his off hours.

After an entire youth of training, Artius left for his first campaign on his 17th birthday. But not before a wondrously extravagant party was held to celebrate, to commemorate the day their son would leave for war, and return a man and bring with him hard won glory. He rode off under a great fanfare, spirits and pride riding high, as he saw his family for what would later become the last time. The grueling campaigns Artius took part in led him far up and down the Imperial wildlands, where any foe of man could be found. These years came to a climax while reinforcing an army already stuck in a large engagement in the norther hinterlands, where the combined army group fought and destroyed a rampaging Khornate warband, who had been razing the region for many months and came dangerously close the borders of a few northern states. Artius had fought during a critical point of the battle, and valiantly faced down two of Khorne's own Bloodletters in single combat. While the battle was decided in an engagement in the coming days, tales of his deeds quickly spread throughout the men who witnessed the fight and instilled new courage in many of those who had lost their nerve.

The nearly eight years he spent on march seemed to him pass him as a scant few months. He made all haste homewards after being temporarily dismissed, eager to see his kin for the first time in a what felt like a liftime of separation. However, when he returned to the family manor, he was not greeted by revelers and his lady in waiting, but instead by a bloodbath. He wandered throughout the estate, looking for one living soul besides himself, and found Emiline hiding in one of the deep recesses of the grounds, mortally wounded. With her last breaths, she told Artius what had happened and about the Daemonettes. Scrounging up what meager money was left in the manor, he afforded every single dead a good funeral, and took the meager remnants of the fortune with him. He wandered, as a furious ghost, around the Ostland province, hunting whatever traces he could find of the man responsible for that day.

And now, guided by wisdom from several mages and Witch Hunters, he continues his search for retribution in Hochland.

Personality: Fiery, prideful and aggressive, but also deeply passionate. Genuinely faithful to the last, and generally hot-blooded. When around Slaaneshi cultists he reaches levels of sheer, frenzied fury that would make a Khornate warrior proud.
Likes: Humble living, simplicity, good people, playing the cello, freedom, prayers, beer, protecting innocents, Sigmar, fighting, Khornate cults, helping out, and roasted snotlings.
Dislikes: Chaos, Skaven, opulence, betrayal, liars, Slaanesh, injustice, attacking civilians, corruption, wine, incompetence, magic.
Theme song: Dawn of War - We Die Standing
Voice: Enthusiastic and youthful.

Familiarity: Passing. I'm much more familiar with 40k than fantasy, but I can still name most of the races. I will make some gaffs, so apologies in advance when I screw up. Let me know when I do so I can fix it.

Camille de Lautrec-Valcabrère
Image

Race: Human
Gender/Sex: Male
Equipment: Clothes, staff of sorcery, some money, grimoires, magic scrolls, dagger, potions, enchanted jewellery (amulet- seed of rebirth, ruby ring of ruin), other stuff.
Skills: Magic, in particular Lore of Undeath and Lore of Life. Reading books. Fairly intelligent. Good at surviving in the wilderness, getting around in forests and places with a lot of plant life. Perceptive.
Weaknesses: Physically weak, and his fragile constitution ensures he has to rely on healing magic a bit too much. Not that good at melee combat, though reasonable with a staff, and he recalls a little swordsmanship he learnt when he was young. Shy.
Bio: Born to a Bretonnian noble family, his father, Calogrenant VI, the Marquis de Lautrec and Comte de Valcabrère, Camille was remarkably curious and intelligent from an early age. He was an veracious reader, though sometimes beset by ill-health, and a fragile constitution, which made his more martially inclined younger brother the preferred heir. Being a little envious, though accepting of his situation, he was more close to his scholarly older sister, who whilst overtly posing as the perfect noblewoman, was much more inquisitive and intelligent than one might expect if she was encountered in a social gathering.

Unfortunately, like most with magical potential, born in that kingdom, he was taken by servants of the Fey Enchantress, who had heard of unusual happenings caused by Camille's inadvertently tapping into his magical aptitude.

He was taken, in this manner to the wood elves of Athel Loren, at the age of eleven. It's never stated what exactly happens to male Bretonnians with magic potential, but it's probably to become slaves/servants to dem elves, something which is reinforced in Graham MacNeill's Guardians of the Forest. Perhaps some kinkiness occurs.

Anyway, he was raised in Athel Loren, coming to both fear and revere the inhabitants of those forests. How long he spent there is uncertain, but considering the human servants kept there in the aforementioned book, essentially hadn't aged, it is safe to say that it could be a fair length of time.

Though clearly regarded as inferior, he was sometimes taught a little of magic by one or two of the elves he served, other than what was merely useful in regards to serving them. Though they probably saw it more as teaching a pet some tricks, though his innate talent was notable, especially for a human. Thus began his learning, of the Lore of Life. Within four centuries (human servants in Athel Loren don't age, for some reason), however, he would fall into he clutches of one of the more whimsical and cruel of these forest Asrai. Badness happened.

Although essentially indoctrinated to serve their kind, there were times when he attempted to escape. Unsurprisingly, with a sentient forest full of wood elves and nature spirits to navigate through, he failed innumerable times, though he provided them adequate amusement as they hunted him down, some even sadistically toying with him at times, and never punishing him so much as to permanently dissuade him from engaging in those futile attempts. At some point, he gave up, though some "persuading" may have taken place, be it through pain or magic.

Later on, accompanying a hunting party outside of the forest, he would inadvertently escape from this rather unkind wood elf's grasp. Near the mountains they came up against a group of Blood Knight vampires, and in the exchange, in which much blood was spilt, Camille was separated, and vanished after being pursued by a detachment of Blood Knights. Severely injured, and lost along a desolate mountain path, he found himself in an isolated village, where the locals, at first wary, helped him recover.

After, for a relatively brief time, he traveled and resided in parts of Bretonnia, as a "Damsel" or apparently female Bretonnian sorcerer, since they are the only magic-users the Bretonnians have, and he would be a bit too suspicious otherwise. Plus he also looked the part, and it would give him enough apparent authority to not be asked questions. At another point he was captured by a group of dark sorcerers and necromancers along the border with the Empire. Moar stuff happened. He also learnt a bit of the lore of Undeath. He went around the empire for a bit, learning and doing things- including hanging around near graves and battlefields to experiment and improve upon his necromantic magic, before travelling, more recently, into the province of Hochland.

Familiarity: Somewhat, though I know quite a bit more about 40k. I can use the power of the internet, however, as well as some stuff I learnt playing Geheimnisnacht in CK2.
RP Sample: No.

Personality: Shy and tentatively kind, though at the same time possessed of a somewhat flawed moral compass, albeit with remnants of Bretonnian nobility and chivalry still present in his way of thinking. His view of wood elves is a bit complicated. He fears them as much as he reveres them, and may find himself unconsciously obeying them, should he encounter some, though he may also break down, or freeze. It may be due to having been a servant of theirs for so long, though it is likely some form of mind-altering magic used in the past upon him, also plays a part. He's generally quite wary, and often worries that his origin and true nature will be revealed. He may also be a bit of a closet masochist, though he wouldn't admit it, unless you made him.
Likes: Magic, books, Bretonnia, Wood Elves, other stuff
Dislikes: Chaos, Wood Elves, Witch hunters, superstitious peasants and other sorts that might be mean to him, especially if they find out he's a Bretonnian trap mage who knows necromancy.
Theme song: Here, here, here, here and here
Voice: Quiet, oddly ageless, soft and feminine enough to further confuse people regarding his biological sex.

Stuff on the net wrote:Yeah, the relationship between the two races if plain weird in a lot of ways.

The elves are utter snobs towards the humans, viewing themselves as more cultured, wise, and intelligent. And WEs do take Bretonnian children as servants. The scene from the book reminded me of the young Greek boys that the Olympians would take to their celestial home as servants to the gods.

Except the Bret kids are said to possess something weird about them, like the one with the differently colored eyes. Leofric views them as slaves, but decides not to interfere with the child-servant's fate.

So are they slaves? Does that make them kind of like the high elves?

So just what do those Brets think happens to their children when they give them to the Lady of the Lake?

Does she have them dancing around the maypoles? Collecting mushrooms from the forest floor? Or does she use them as mules for trafficking narcotics to cloistered damsels in distress?

Anyhow, back to the point...humans look at wood elves as snide and dangerous, connected to the forest that claims their kin.

Somehow they find an uneasy alliance and hold back the forces of chaos, all the while grooving on Ariel, Lady of the Lake.

Aside: one thing I really dug about the book was seeing Orion loosed and wreaking havoc on the sad-sacked peasants

Bretonnian children who are born with psychic powers and able to control the winds of magic are visisted when they are around ten or eleven by the Fey Enchantress. She takes them off somewhere and the family grieves for them as if they are dead. Some of the girls who are taken return to their family when they are older but retain a youthful look. They are able to harness the winds of magic as well as a wizard of the Empire, if not better. These are the damsels (casters) of the Bretonnian army.

Male Casters in Bretonnia

Are there male magic users in Bretonnia? From what I can find the only male unit is a collectors unit called "Bagrian,
Abbot of La Maisontaal" and he used the Lore of Beasts. Does the lore ever explain what becomes of the young boys
that the Fey Enchantress whisks away? We know that the girls return as Damsels and Prophetesses, but what about the
boys?

Something like that. They serve as slaves for the wood elves. Not really slaves. They love serving the wood elves
though.

In the novel Guardian of the Woods you can read that the male children are used as a kind of servants/slaves for parties
and festivities. The Knight in the book actually meets an ancestor this way.

Anyhow, in the previous armybook there were male casters, and it doesn't sound unlikely that richer Knights send their
gifted children of the the Mage colleges in the Empire. There is even a comic of one on the black library site. Nonetheless
this was during the time of the 5th edition. It is a bit unclear how many of them exist (are they allowed to excist?) or if
they have been written out of fluff.

Likes: Humble living, simplicity, good people, music, freedom, prayers, beer, protecting innocents, Sigmar, fighting, Khornate cults, helping out, and roasted snotlings.

How zealous/ignorant is the general population? If it varies between areas, how's Hochland in particular?

The majority of people are your average medieval commoner. Pretty superstitious and ignorant, I'd say.

I have no idea if this kind of heresy would be allowed in the empire...

Bit too permanent for my liking. He might be able to use that Life magic to regenerate from the first bit, but the later, probably not.
C'mon, make it a bit more prolonged and kinky, will ya!

Much lewdness and torturyness, mayhap. I'm a masochist with a fondness for traps, so that is of interest to me, and I have a good imagination. :)
