Opening weekend is finally here! FC Samotath defender Jubal Va'Mono scores the first goal of the Harlighet Ligan season with his powerful header off a corner in the 76th minute, to put away Stoneshore United 1-0. Cassandra City began their title defense campaign in earnest, shutting out a dangerous Klyde squad at The Sportsplex thanks to first half goals from Kyle Fleming and Thorodel Nagdalene. The Orange Palace went ecstatic in Mallox's home opener, as the fans were treated to a four-goal explosion in a 10-minute span that included a brace from Anders Engstrom. Not to be outdone, their cross-fief enemy Eastweald also had a big opener at Old Weldenskirgen, soaring past FC Kaldukosic thanks to late goals from Jake Wiggins, Franz Auman and Mika Ostaltsov. But way more surprising was the fact that Pardock Island also won their first ever Harlighet Ligan match. Karoki Herakles opportunistically finished after Logan Shaw's goalkeeping error to push the debutants ahead 1-0. They might have more to show than we thought. The most surprising result of opening weekend (there always is one) was in the Ramusok derby. Ram U couldn't crack open their crosstown rival AC Holmenkollen, so Brock Mattox's strike in the second minute ended up being the difference-maker. That's a great start to life at Cedar Road for new manager Syl Denhardt.
Globe Cup Playoff Round, Leg 1
(MNG) Skyline United 1–1 Klyde (COS)
Klyde are forced to carry the torch for Cosumar in the Globe Cup alone, as all of the other Harlighet Ligan clubs were disposed of in the preliminary rounds. It was a tough draw in the playoff round, with the Doves travelling to Mangolana to take on Skyline United, that country's champion. They responded well, going up 1-0 in the 26th minute on Neil Bravo's ten yard strike that was teed up by Lucius Kaspian. Though Skyline United would equalize in the final fifteen minutes, getting the away goal was crucial for Klyde.

OAS Royal FC 1–0 Nomad Brotherhood FC
Stoneshore United 3–1 Na'Malsille Mariners
After being embarrassed by their little brothers from suburban Ramusok last week at home, Ramusok United responded by unleashing their fury on Zakhoro Aces. The Blues were just on a whole other level of quality and determination, winning 4-1 thanks to goals from Alberto Silva, Roald Aguero and a brace from Martin Mazida. It could have easily been as many as eight goals if it weren't for some breathtaking sequences in goal from Logan Shaw. Meanwhile Pardock Island played their first game at one of the iconic Harlighet Ligan grounds, Leviathan Arena, and were subjected to a 4-1 drubbing in front of the 98,000 raucous FC Kaldukosic fans. Welcome to the big leagues, Pardock. In the marquee clash of the weekend, Cassandra City proved they don't need any grace period to find their championship form, as they trounced Mallox 3-0 at The Amphitheatre. Ace Newman opened his account this season with two goals, and Richard Vencharde scored the other. The Reds' defense also did an impressive job limiting the impact of Anders Engstrom and Jimmy Kelly for Mallox. Stoneshore United also got a nice resounding three-goal win this weekend over Na'Malsille, which was much needed to clear the foul smell in the air and get fans on board with Douglas Tibet's plans. OAS Royal have quietly raced out to a 2-0-0 start with victories over Nomads and Mariners.
Globe Cup Playoff Round, Leg 2
(COS) Klyde 2–1 AET Skyline United (MNG)
It was 1-1 at full time, which made the two sides deadlocked at 2-2 on aggregate both with one away goal. But in the 115th minute of extra time, Jacques Bourbon rolled a well-placed goal to the far post after Galen Abbatangelo's 40 yard pass found him on the left side. The Klyde Sportsplex went absolutely ballistic as Bourbon slid to his knees and the Doves' bench emptied to pile on top of him. Klyde advance 3-2 on aggregate past the Mangolanan champs.

Real Azuris 1–1 AC Holmenkollen
Nomads pick up their first win of the season at Sweeney Station against Stoneshore United thanks to Andrei Nikolov's bending shot from 25 yards. Despite their age, Klyde don't seem to be the struggling with the load of midweek Globe Cup games at all. A mere 72 hours after punching their tickets to the Qualifying round, Klyde put forth another inspiring effort - this time against OAS Royal. Peter Wiggin scored his first Harlighet Ligan goal in the 13th minute, but Klyde equalized just before the half on Kristian Oberhangen's header. The Doves wrested control in the second half, with Jacob Madison curling a superb goal in off the far post from a tight angle in the 60th minute and Ejegefeh Na'Safeh scoring from the spot in the 81st. It was a high scoring weekend across the league. Mallox put up five goals in a win over Morponte Fief, and Pardock Island (yes, seriously, Pardock) and Ramusok United also scored four out of the six goals in their respective wins. Another thrilling six-goal contest ended in a 3-3 draw at Old Weldenskirgen between Eastweald and Cassandra City. The champions went up 2-0 and then 3-1, but the home side came storming back and equalized in the 94th minute after Tremain Williams' gritty punch-in after a loose ball bounced around in the box before finally finding his feet. By contrast, the riverbed is still bone dry in Crawford - CCFC are still in search of their first goal of the season.
Harlighet Ligan Matchday 4
FC Samotath 2–2 AC Holmenkollen
Zakhoro Aces 2–0 Real Azuris
FC Kaldukosic 0–0 Crawford City FC
Versiaville SC 0–1 Ramusok United
Cassandra City 6–2 Pardock Island
Morponte Fief 2–1 Eastweald
OAS Royal FC 2–1 Mallox
Stoneshore United 2–3 Klyde
Na'Malsille Mariners 2–0 Nomad Brotherhood FC
Cassandra City and Pardock Island didn't look like they belonged in the same league in their match, with Cassandra City piling on six goals - the highest total yet this season. It was a remarkable team effort, with six different players scoring. Pardock goalie Asgeir Thorsteinsson had a miserable afternoon, but so did the defenders in front of him. At least Karoki Herakles is proving to be a worthwhile addition - the 33 year old Acedonian scored twice to ease the damage to Pardock's GD. Over in Zakhoro, the Aces picked their first win of the season, 2-0 over Real Azuris. Both Borderlandians, Giona Ancarlo and Belarming Worsaw, opened their Harlighet Ligan accounts against the 998 & 999 champions. Down in Morponte, Fief have had a quietly strong start to the season, which now includes a 2-1 win over Eastweald. Leo Montarvo has really picked up the slack for Curtis Hickory's departure, scoring twice in the win. Perhaps Grant Bulle saw something there that we didn't. Very few players will score against Eastweald twice this season. In one of Harlighet Ligan's classic rivalry games, though it has lost its intensity in recent years, OAS Royal prevailed over Mallox 2-1. Brian Emerson's squad looked very cohesive and at times dangerous this afternoon, a promising sign for the rest of the season. Warren Paysinger and Younda Fahad scored for the Royals, each assisting the other's goal. Swiping Paysinger from Cassandra City's bench is turning out to be a huge boon for OAS.
Globe Cup Qualifying Round, Leg 1
(VIL) Eastal Lunar 1–1 Klyde (COS)
Drawing the V-League 5th place finishers was once again an unlucky fixture for Klyde, but they made the best of it by snagging an away goal in a draw in Vilita. Nili Ylimaiina scored on a close-range chip after shredding the Klyde defense with a spectacular individual run in the 10th minute. Eastal Lunar dominated most of the game, but Klyde started showing signs of life late and Neil Bravo was rewarded with a free header off a corner in the 88th minute, which he buried with aplomb.
Harlighet Ligan Matchday 5

Eastweald 4–3 OAS Royal FC

Klyde were the victims of the upset of the week, as the strain of the Globe Cup finally seems to be affecting their league form. Their winded and elderly defenders (average age: 33) could not keep up with Mariners' youthful energy. Felix Jakobson ran all over Klyde for a hat trick and Nikolae Na'Kebia also tallied in the Mariners' 4-1 silencing of Klyde Sportsplex. Stoneshore's visit to Mallox turned into The Anders Engstrom Show, as the top Cosumarite player in the world (don't try to argue it) abused Stoneshore's teenage right back Mabry Jean Lowry for four goals, the most of any player in one game so far. In the most thrilling match of the weekend, Eastweald and OAS Royal traded goals back and forth all night but the Elves came out on top 4-3 with the final word being Otto Rush's first-time volley from six yards in the 89th minute. But the highlight of the match came from young OAS Royal forward Atlas Yrska - an early candidate for Goal of the Year. Yrska, with two defenders draped over him, collected a long pass from Igor Stamatev with a jaw-dropping first touch, then simultaneously did a spin move to split the defenders and fired past Golden Rand into the corner. Even some of the Eastweald fans gave him a smattering of polite applause for the effort, which made it 2-2 at the time. And finally, the primtime match of the week: a rematch of last season's showdown for the championship. This time, Ramusok United got the better of Cassandra City 2-1, giving the blue-clad masses in Fire River Arena a savory taste of revenge. Raphael Xodo slotted between the legs of David Iziduko in just the 2nd minute. The Reds would equalize within ten minutes, but Ram U pulled ahead for good in the 61st minute when Roald Aguero turned in Kira Jonassen's cross at the far post. In other news, Crawford City finally scored their first goal over a month in, but still lost 4-2 to geographic rival Versiaville SC. Is the balance of power shifting on the west coast?
Globe Cup Qualifying Round, Leg 2
(COS) Klyde 1–0 Eastal Lunar (VIL)
It was an ugly, physical duel as both sides fought tooth-and-nail for a place in the group stage. The referee had a busy night, handing out seven yellow cards and a red card to try to keep tempers under control. It was the red card that ultimately made the difference. An Eastal Lunar defender erased a clear goal-scoring opportunity when he slid into Jacques Bourbon from behind as the Doves forward had broken free for a one-on-one look at goal. Lucius Kaspian then guided the ensuing free kick under the crossbar for the only goal of the game. Klyde advances 2-1 on aggregate. Cosumar flags could be seen among the usual Klyde FC flags at The Sportsplex, with fans embracing national pride in carrying the torch alone for the Fiefdom.

Woah! Three hat tricks in the same game! Defense was apparently completely optional in the Aces' 6-4 win at FC Samotath, putting an ugly black eye on the hitherto solid season the Samo defense had had. Belarmin Worsaw and Henning Nilssen tripled for Zakhoro, and Devon Noble for Samotath. Jean-Pierre Mons also scored. In Cassandra, the Reds were surprisingly held to a draw by Crawford City. Ron Bromwyn's side looked clear to glide to a 1-0 win until new goalkeeper David Iziduko gifted one away in the 82nd minute. CCFC were pressuring in the back and the teenage Quebecois shanked his hurried attempt at a crossfield pass. Adren Muller was there for the Elephants to scoop it up and walk across the line. Will Cassandra City's lack of an experienced keeper prevent them from defending their title? Iziduko has showed promise, but he has also made some critical blunders so far. Just about every other result this week was topsy-turvy as well. Morponte Fief stood strong at home against Ramusok United, with Alistair Redalen and Martin Connor both scoring their first career Harlighet Ligan goals. Pardock Island caught OAS Royal off guard at The Royal Palace. The home supporters were shaking their heads as Lyyli Silvén scored the winner for lowly Pardock in the 84th minute by tenaciously cutting straight through OAS Royal's multimillion dollar back line and dinking it in off the left post. Fellow newly-promoted side Na'Malsille Mariners also caught a traditional Harlighet Ligan power by surprise, shutting out Mallox thanks to 10 saves from Quebecois keeper Helmut Gauthier. The Mariners only had three looks on goal, but Bazou Diaware made the most of his - smashing Brooke Ford's cross home with his forehead.

The big match of the weekend was the Ramusok derby. No, not one with AC Holmenkollen. "THE" Ramusok derby. The real one. Ram U vs OAS Royal. The atmosphere was simply electric at Fire River Arena. They didn't have much to cheer about in the first half as OAS Royal raced out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Peter Wiggin and Mustafa Hendrix. But the second half was a stark contrast as Robin Geirsson & Co. took over. Geirsson scored twice himself, in the 52nd minute on a long-range screamer and again in the 88th minute on a free kick that took a lucky deflection off Jannick Kontiola that left Jaclyn Maris helpless. It was only a point, but the Ram U fans celebrated the comeback like a win.

What is it with Zakhoro Aces and 6-4 results? Unlike two weeks ago against FC Samotath, the Aces came out on the wrong end of the goalfest this time, falling to Versiaville SC. Even without Octavius Ioda, the Villagers had a field day with Zakhoro's discombobulated defense. Feri Koropia and Asa Nemtheanga both scored twice, and Olivier Eliot and Cyle Haber also found the back of the net. Entering the weekend, the Harlighet Ligan leader was...Morponte Fief. Their tenure at #1 didn't last long, however, as Real Azuris went to Mortim and pulled all three points out of a slow, defensive affair. The only goal was Ipier Ubuntu's conversion from the penalty spot after Tristian Delph's controversial alleged handball in the box in the 70th minute. Meanwhile, in Stoneshore, the Greys got their first home win over the hated Ramusok United in what feels like decades. Douglas Tibet's first eight games at the helm haven't gone great, but this win could be something to build on. They got goals from both of their main men up top in Yuri Makarov and Sam Herbjornsrud.

The dominant storyline in the second division so far hasn't been about who's winning, but rather, who's not. Projected champion Centus Serpents is all the way down in 16th with only eight points through nine games. There's still plenty of time to recover, but if they're not careful they could become the first team to ever be relegated in consecutive seasons. It boggles my mind that a team led by Akira Eld with talent like Milo Gregory, Gutinho and Andreas Brennan is struggling so badly against supposedly lesser competition. And West Gundar FC, who just came down with Centus, aren't doing much better! The Rugged Men are in 14th and really seem to be struggling to find the back of the net without Alberto Silva (now of Ramusok United). So now there's a power vacuum at the top of the table and a number of clubs are racing to fill it, sensing better-than-expected chances of a promotion. To no one's surprise, Samaj FC are currently on the throne, but there are six clubs (including surprise contenders Fort Archer, Dawchire Town and Regela United) right there around the bend.
