Translate something into Tavan

Postby The Tavan Race » Mon Jul 05, 2010 12:35 am

For those of you who have seen Wonderchicken's thread, this is pretty much the same idea.

You post whatever nonsense you want translated, and our linguists will set to work dissecting it and laying it out in the glorious Tavan language.

Be forewarned that this is a slow and painstaking process, and you may not get a response for several days.
All vowels are pronounced as they are in Spanish, and all consonants as in English except for J, which is said like zh. Q is pronounced as a "k" sound, as is C. All combinations of vowels are said as a string of the individuals, i.e. "ai" is pronounced like "aye", and "ei" like the Ay in stay.

Frequent edits to the alphabet, so older mottoes or such things may be laughed at by the natives.

Transliterated: Te uomeva di ome hokueri ewhuei.

Ah, it is a thing of beauty.

Explanation: There are two words for god in Tavan: Omenuetilin, which means ruler on high and which is used only for the tavan god, and there is ome, which means any other god, existent or not, that is not their own. Assuming you mean the Judeo-Christian God, this would fall under the second category, although a tavan would never willingly glorify any other god but his own.

"For Science and Progress!"

Please note, when the motto says Science as well as says Progress, it is referring to the concepts of these things as.....gods, the closest word we could find. As living things that are all powerful and define one's existence.

Explanation: The collective form of "your" is used, as we felt it the most fitting of the sentiment. Additionally, "life" is changed from the stem "to live", and could be interpreted loosely as "way of life" or "lifestyle" depending on the context.

Image
Transliterated: Hokau te be kida te svehina.

Explanation: Given that we are an alien race, "person" is used instead of "man", and assuming you mean the shape of a man's face in the moon, it is more appropriate in Tavan to use "on top of". Literally translated this says "We are the person on top of the moon."

Our motto is "We are the Strogg. Prepare to become one of us"
The Tavan Race wrote:

As an environmentally bankrupt nation and one built exclusively for war, this species appears to undermine their own purpose for living. As their technology is sufficiently advanced to be a threat to us, and as our most powerful weaponry is biological and would likely not work very well on them, this species scares us to no end. It is likely we would attack this nation on sight, and until they act somewhat drastically to convince us of their good intentions, we are quite paranoid about the Strogg.[/quote]

Image
Transliterated: Idi Neseki u Treyuefele!

Explanation: This motto faces a significant error in that the Tavan language has no word for Progress in the sense of advancing society. The used term means artificial evolution, or the use of technology to better one's evolutionary stance. However it carries no connotation of benefiting the species in question and might even be viewed as "cheating" by some.

Explanation: This one is a perfect demonstration of our language's complexity and beauty. What this really says is something like, "Our strength that comes from our large numbers, it shall darken the atmosphere of all planets." Trust me when I say that it sounds better in Tavan.

Explanation: Our language has no word for throne, and indeed no concept of what it symbolizes, so we picked the next best thing, which was caveka, or fortress. It symbolizes power and influence along with defense, so it is quite fitting. Also, one cannot use a present participle on its own, so the first word translates to "we are defending".

Image
Transliteration: Omenukone hokueri vulesi.

Explanation: Our word for fascism is something like "total and absolute control" and carries connotations of rot and stagnation. Therefore this motto is almost an oxymoron in that fascism is depicted as dead and decaying, while life obviously is not. Furthermore it is not appropriate to call a concept word any adjective other than what directly describes it, and so the term "alive" is not really technically correct.
