The Surabaya class is a group of ultra large crude oil tankers designed by Royal Beaufort Shipwrights Guild. The lead ship of her class is a capable 380 metres long (LOA) vessel for oil companies for its ability of transporting their crude, unrefined oils to their next business destinations in a relatively safe, fuel-efficient, structurally reliable, and ergonomically sound platform.

Alternative role

Vessels of the Surabaya Class can also be used as floating, storage and off-loading (FPSO) ships for hydrocarbons processing and oil storage by offshore oil and gas companies. Though used by, and chartered mainly by oil companies, Her Majesty's Government of the four countries has recently commissioned a number of the vessels to be designated as governmental/state crude oil transporters as well as FPSO logistics ships. Other alternative roles are the ability of the ships to be converted to act as bulk ore or minerals' transportation vessels, or a combination of ore-mineral-oil logistics ships. The Surabaya-class of vessels can also be converted to store and transport natural gas or any other form of raw materials or resources.

Design background

Tankers of this class are some of the most commonly seen throughout Yohannes' vast sphere of influence, and network of commerce, traveling to and fro hundreds of nations around the world, delivering their loads to Yohannesian commercial and engineering operation overseas. For the last sixty years, the average size of succeeding tankers have grown to far surpass its previous classes, from an average deadweight tonnage of 16,500 in the 1950s, to the present generation of ultra large carriers - with deadweight tonnage averaging at 450,000 to 500,000 in capacity. Marine engineers and shipwrights of RBSG, however, have opted to conservatively and cautiously follow the ultra large carrier concept, sacrificing size for a superior structural stability for the ship, realistically constructed, with dependable overall performance.

Environmental protection

The Surabaya Class' double-hull configuration - without the presence of interior steel support due to its unique construction - reduce the risk of oil spills in minor impact setting, and although it provide more safety and less risk than that of double bottoms vessels, the configuration still does not protect against major, high-impact collisions or groundings. Furthermore, its double-hull setting meant that vessels of the Surabaya class are less stable in comparison to other single hulled tankers. This configuration furthermore provide vessels of the class an estimated 30% stronger bottom structural protection, without much hindering deadweight or storage capacity.

Risk mitigation

To reduce the risk of explosions or fires onboard the Surabaya Class, the vessel is designed with its noble gas system. It prevents the burning of hydrocarbon oil vapours inside her possible ten (lowest recommended) to fifteen (highest recommended) tanks, reducing the risk of explosions or fires onboard the Surabaya Class. The system introduced noble gas into the mixture of already existing hydrocarbon vapours and air, increasing the lower limit of flammability, and thus reducing the risk of ignition in the process.

Storage capacity

Although the Wiremu-class of container ships are longer, the Surabaya class of tankers are still bigger in terms of deadweight tonnage, allowing prospective owners to carry up to 3 million barrels of crude oil per trip through 20,000 nautical miles' worth of journey, at a stabilised cruising speed of 16 knots.

Possible setback

Due to her size, it is not recommended - nor considered as effective - for operators of the vessel to operate tankers of the class near coastal or inland waterways. Furthermore, her size meant that the Surabaya Class can realistically enter only a few international major ports while fully loaded. She can be anchored near coastal areas, from where her load can be transported through interconnected off-shore platforms as well as anchored buoy and by further supporting vessels. It is from here that her load can finally be transported to the closest port or any other nearby destination.

WA regulation

Alternative direct lightering operation and cargo hoses methods may be used instead, and RBSG tankers are designed to follow the multi regionally recommended oil transportation and storage best practices as set by the World Assembly.

Fuel consumption

With an estimated total fuel consumption of 320 to 340 tonnes per day from its four Weilmfontein low-speed diesel-powered engines - delivering 36 mW @ 75 rpm - the cost of operating the vessel of this class can range from ten thousand to fifteen thousand universal standard dollars daily for her operators and owners. Tankers of the Surabaya class are some of the most cost-effective method of oil transportation as of the present day, with a research made in 2008 showing a meagre transportation cost of only one cent to three cents by universal standard dollars' currency conversion, as put per gallon.
