Fair dues, IIRC you have one advantage over me in that you're younger than me(?).

Okay first off, wtf does IIRC mean? I never understood that.

And second, I'll be twenty in two months.

If I Remember Correctly.

I'll be 29 in five months, even though I can apply for apprenticeships most companies will tend to go for a under 24 year old simply because they'll get funded for doing so. If I was 5 years younger then there is a ton of training schemes I can get on, at present to improve my job prospects it's either learn to drive or join the military...the latter of which has an ever shorter window of opportunity.

Yeah, given the budget cuts, I'm probably going to have to go completely civilian, instead of doing ROTC like I was leaning towards doing.

I'm off to Uni for UOTC, Special Constabulary and a degree in Policing and Criminal Investigation. Hopefully this will lead to Detective-Constable (or above) and an Army Reserve Commission.

I was just going to get a double major in Aerospace Engineering and Astrophysics. I figure, its something that really interests me, and the Air Force will almost certainly have some sort of need for somebody with a degree in one of those fields, so I can serve my country at the same time.

Lacking anything close to A Levels I'm looking as going in as an enlistedman, maybe getting a commission later on like my uncle did.

Looking at either Supplier, Driver or Mover.

Yeah...had a "damn I feel old" moment at the bus stop earlier when I realized all the pre-teens there were born when I left school.

Plod is the law - your QC's cannot save you now. He is to Toytown what Gene Hunt is to Manchester (and also London). His cries of

Judge Dredd goes out in full armour, with a infeasibly large handgun and is backed up by all sorts of technologically advanced kit. Ergo, he is a pansy and unworthy of being called the law.

Plod faces the scum of Toytown with no more than his helmet, a notebook and No. 1 Dress Uniform. Plod does not need all of high tech kit. He is not a pansy. Plod is the law.

Except the B-52.

Face it, BUFF is probably going to outlive the B-1, B-2, and the unmanned bomber meant to replace all three of them.

And when it does, it'll celebrate with a drink of jet fuel served by that other Boeing that just won't die, the KC-135.

In Troubled Hours - Part I - Cropdusting, Close Call

Postby Gibberan » Wed Feb 26, 2014 5:54 pm

1st February, 1937
Carter & Carter Produce Farm
Bullfrog, North Dakota, USA
Image

"Son, make sure to..."

The voice of Edmond Leach Carter, known to people all over Bullfrog as 'the farm owner from Indiana', 'that man who makes the produce', and to young, 19 year-old Andrew Carter, Jr as simply 'Dad', was drowned out by the loud hum of the water-cooled 435 horsepower Curtiss D-12 engine, which rattled inside the canvas exterior of the antiquated Stearman C-2 biplane.

Young Carter hopped in the cockpit, yelling a quick "All right!" to his father, who was watching by the hangar door. Andrew hadn't actually heard what his father had said, but assumed it had been some safety precaution, possibly related to the snow-covered runway on which he was now about to take off on. Andrew was unfazed by his father's warnings; he said them every time he took off on a routine cropdusting mission, and every time, he came back without a hitch.

And it wasn't like there was anything to be worried about, even. Despite the snowy runway (which, in itself, was only a shoddy gravel road which had been enlargened when they got the biplane), there was nothing wrong with the plane, nothing wrong with the runway, and nothing wrong with Andrew's piloting abilities. Everything was fine.

And that was exactly the problem. There was nothing to be worried about. Andrew wanted more than just spraying insecticides on a much-familiar field, on a much-familiar farm, on the much-familiar outskirts of a much-familiar town, in a state that he had ventured outside of only once.

And that was where Spain was supposed to come in.

He had been toying around with this idea for months, but he was finally convinced that he wanted to go to Spain. Franco had been oppressing the people over there long enough, and it was time for him to take a stand. He was going to go join the International Brigades, fight against the fascists. He was now thinking deeply. Maybe join the Lincoln Battalion of American volunteers...or, no. Yankee Squadron.

Yes, Yankee Squadron was it. He wanted to fly something besides a Stearman for a change, to get a taste of battle. To fight against the Nationalists and the Italians and the Germans. This was going to be something big. He had studied the teachings of Billy Mitchell and he knew the next war would be won or lost in the air. And he wanted to be part of their victory.

He pulled back on the stick, gently but firmly, as he always did when taking off from the field. Suddenly, something went wrong.

After the incident, investigators said some snow had been thrown up by Carter's rapid approach (which he hadn't been paying attention to) and gotten caught in the engine. Carter says it was a revelation.

The plane wouldn't go up. Carter's thought's stopped as he instinctively attempted to gain control of the plane, now wobbling unstably. He looked up, and his expression turned into a face of horror as the end of the runway approach. Before he knew it, the plane had nearly flipped over completely and had collided with the toolshed located at the end of the runway and the beginning of the cornfield.

His memory went blank. The next thing Andrew remembered was being lifted away by his father and mother from the smoke. He had a large gash on his forehead, and his face was covered in soot. He stared deeply into his parent's eyes, and almost gave a weak smile.

"Mom, Dad.....I want to go to Spain."
