Sometimes it seemed like a different lifetime that Leif Blomgren had been living in Elvabyen, looking forward to going to college on a hockey scholarship in the fall, going to metal concerts almost every weekend and missing his parents in Greysolon. It was hard to believe he was the same person who had reported to the Blue Cygnets' training camp for the World Junior Hockey Championships, the same person who had been so surprised to get the letter from his coach asking him to try out. Sometimes he still woke expecting to be playing school boy hockey, like the past year had all been just a dream.

But if it had been a dream, or a fantasy, then there were definitely parts where he would have liked to wake up. The gruesome deaths of the Patistani players still haunted him, as did the heavy weight of fear in Coach Schved's eyes as she'd watched the news and translated the Guayabalian to them and the quiet pride with which Gregory had congratulated his enemy crushers. Leif had heard dozens of heavy metal singers claim to be "Satan's spawn" or "the true face of evil", but there was no doubt in his mind that he saw the real thing whenever Gregory was on-screen.

There had also been triumphs, though, things he would have been disappointed to wake up from. He remembered the feeling when the buzzer had sounded in the final game against Sicoutimont, how he'd felt almost numb as he'd hustled to the bench, how it had taken a minute to sink in, and the surge of elation that had overtaken him when it finally did. The Blue Swans had lined up in their jerseys at the airport to greet them, standing beneath a banner that read "Verdensmestere"-"World Champions." Now Leif had a jersey identical to theirs, except for the small Patistani flag that he insisted on wearing on his left breast.

Then there was his whirlwind ride to the major juniors in Quebec. When he'd met the scout in San Jose Guayabal, he'd thought it was just a cursory, touch-base kind of thing in case any of them did something really spectacular to earn a spot in the juniors. Then the call had come that he was projected as a first-round pick, and he'd wondered whether it was a scam, something to lure out his money in hopes of playing professional hockey. He'd gone, though, taken the twenty-four-hours-plus flight to Esquarium to sit in a convention center in Montreal (or was it Quebec City?) and shake the hand of the coach that picked him. He hadn't even been paying attention when his name was called first overall; it hadn't even occurred to him that going first was a possibility. He'd taken a picture with the coach of the Kenora Thunderwolves, and it still hadn't sunk in.

The Ice Falcons

Head Coach: Ignacio Pervia
Assistant Coach: Markus Obnik
Trainer: Mo'a Ni-tum

(# - Pos - Name - Age)
Forward Line 1
#57 LW Rudrick Hoer (23)
#01 C Aaran Ashby (32)
#34 RW Wilhelm von Üshter (35)

A little unusual for the primary line, these three specialize in pesterance and convoluted strategies. They run a quick, high-passing game meant to confuse and confound their foes and slip the puck by the goalie rather than power it through.

Forward Line 2
#25 LW Karl Woflshtag (31)
#05 C Gunter Ingelhommen (37)
#93 RW Albert Jair (22)

The complete opposite of the first line, Karl, Gunter and Albert run a slow and deliberate pressure game. Keep the puck on the other side of the court and kill time with passive possession until a gap arises, then bash through said gap and slam the puck at the goal with all possible force.

Forward Line 3
#11 LW Kyle Bosche (38)
#00 C Constantine Volproppos (41)
#76 RW Hank Boone (40)

What some may call a line of fossils, we call a line of experience. Though none of the players are as sprite and lithe as they were in their youth, they know hockey inside and out. The name of the game here is exploiting younger, inexperienced opponents, leading them into traps and forcing them into gambits any seasoned player would avoid in an instant. Bosche is still a star despite his age, and can still score with the best of them.

Forward Line 4
#16 LW Frederik Daecher (18)
#07 C Heinrick Klein (21)
#03 RW Ci-ga Iwa'oa (19)

A strictly backup line drawn from Falconwhereveryouare's youth hockey leagues. Defensively-minded, as they mostly just eat minutes to give the other lines a breather. Ci-ga does have a penchant for dramatic late-game goals, though.

Defensive Pair 1
#65 LD Franz McClain (34)
#56 RD Josiah Adler (27)

Solid defenders who rarely cross to the other half of the ice; their job is to get the puck to the forward line as quick as possible then set up for possible enemy counters.

Defensive Pair 2
#45 LD Drew Schott (39)
#54 RD Damian Jones (32)

Strong, burly guys who can really intimidate others. Work in tandem with FL2 and FL3 to really wear down opponents.

Defensive Pair 3
#78 LD Payne Aldrich (36)
#87 RD Turis von Guelch (34)

Just a pair of regulars. Do their job, not much else.

Goalies
#04 Jeremy Scherzer (32)
#08 Claude Moerest (35)
#12 Ignacio Valentine (26)

Scherzer is the starter, an average goalie; Moerest is another average goalie, used to give Scherzer a rest; and Valentine is a slightly below average goalie but can attack effectively when pulled out of the net.

BRIEF BIO

There is no major professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, but there is a minor league and a strong university tradition in the sport. The Ibex are pulled from a mix of the two, but most of the stronger players come from Burgunden University or the Ciavno Jackals, the top minor league hockey team. Not initially aggressive by nature during matches, the Alpen players will only take so much goading before they fight back with a vengeance, as is the nature of most Neu Engollians.

Notes

Prince Josephus is a younger brother of the King of Saintland. He is also the younger brother of Prince Ioannes and the twin brother of Prince Andreas. Line #1 is the scoring line and the one that handles power plays and penalty kills. Clovius is the 2-time reigning league MVP in Saintland. The Trebatius brothers, Doessenius brothers and Murrius brothers are the brother combinations on this team. In ice hockey, as in every team sport, the style of play in Saintland's national league is very physical and many things that are considered fouls in international play aren't fouls in Saintland. Sanctii defensemen are very likely to get into fights at the slightest provocation, if their team is losing or if they are facing a rival and/or somebody they really don't like. This team won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics, but only won 2 out of 10 games at the 21st World Cup of Hockey, where they were plagued by injuries and the distraction of also competing in field hockey and lacrosse. After WCoH 21, most of the players on the team began playing domestically in Quebec. This led to a successful 22nd WCoH which saw them finish second in a tough group, at the expense of Qazox.

OOC: The following is Gregoryisgodistani propaganda. As you might recall, we claim to have killed King Paulus XV back in December, at which point he was allegedly replaced by his twin brother, also named Paulus. Now King Paulus really is dead by assassination.

Sanctii Government finally admits death of King Paulus XV

The Sanctii government has finally acknowledged that King Paulus XV has been assassinated. The government will still not admit that he was killed by the Gregoryisgodistani army, but at least they are admitting he is dead. Furthermore, to make the Sanctii citizens believe their propaganda, the government staged a false flag operation whereby King Paulus XV's identical twin brother, who is also named Paulus, was assassinated at the World Bowl. Of course, this twin is claiming to be the legitimate Paulus. So now everyone in Sanctii finally believes their king is dead, but by a lone gunman, not a Gregoryisgodistani death squad.

With the government now acknowledging the death of King Paulus XV, his son Petrus will ascend to the throne. Petrus is best known in Gregoryisgodistan for being the basis for his namesake on the hit reality show Real Husbands of Saintland, which shows the true brutality of Sanctii husbands and how it is legal for them to beat and even kill their wives. (OOC: Like all reality shows, this one is not remotely realistic.) In any case, Petrus will soon be officially crowned King of Saintland.

According to an infinitely wise statement from Lord Almighty Gregory, "It is good that the Sanctii government is finally acknowledging the assassination of King Paulus XV. However, it is a shame, that his identical twin brother, an innocent man, had to be killed in a false flag operation to accomplish this. The government could simply have admitted that our death squad killed King Paulus during the raid that freed the activist group Vindicta Progressvm from their prison school. (OOC: This never happened.) I call upon the new King Petrus to disestablish the Church of Saintland and instruct all Sanctii citizens to join the Church of Gregoryisgodistan. I am quite sure the latter will never happen. However, I have at least some hope that one day, the Church of Saintland will be abolished and Sanctii citizens will be free to practice any religion they choose, including the one true religion, the Church of Gregoryisgodistan. I am the Lord your God!"

Gregoryisgodistan has a historically poor relationship with Saintland, nearly devolving into war a few times. In a few days, the national hockey team will travel to Saintland for the World Cup of Hockey. Team captains have stated that they will observe the rituals of the Church of Gregoryisgodistan while there, even if it causes them to be executed.

Furthermore, the team will attempt to import boxed DVD sets of Season 1 of Real Husbands of Saintland and sell them on the black market there. "We are not afraid of the Sanctii government," said an unnamed member of the team. "We must distribute this entirely truthful and highly realistic TV show to the Sanctii masses to show we are aware of their brutality and are going to put an end to it." One of the enemy crushers, who asked not to be named, stated he would crush to death any Sanctii man who he witnesses beating or otherwise abusing his wife. "I may be the Enemy Crusher, but I am now the Wife Beater Crusher as well," he said.

Meanwhile, the Gregoryisgodistani hockey team still lacks funding in spite of a strong performance in the previous World Cup of Hockey. The team will be forced to fly commercial air to Saintland, transferring three times - first in Gregory Llama Land, then in Nova Anglicana, and finally in Free Republics. The entire trip, with layovers, will take about 30 hours. The team will leave around noon today. It remains unclear whether they can get the Real Husbands of Saintland DVDs past customs. However, reportedly the team has a plan to sneak them in, but isn't saying what. (OOC: We are wrapping them in wrapping paper and pretending they are birthday presents for our coach. The coach will not be bringing in any DVD's. However, nobody knows this except us.)

History
The village emerged in the mid-eighteenth century, and was known as Guayabal by the abundance of guava. In 1770, according to Pedro Cortés y Larraz (Spanish colonizer), had a population of 593 people "without being subject to any authority."

Indeed, the mayor Mayor Jose Ortiz de la Peña actual surveyor commissioned Don Francisco Jose Vallejo to chart a plan of the new town, which was founded on November 13, 1786 as a people's Guayabal. For 1807 had a population of 1,150 inhabitants.

Independence of SJG:

The March 29, 2013, in protest of its 400 million people by the mistreatment of El Salvador, it was decided to wean and the same day, El Salvador accepted independence.

Through time, international litigation, could colonize El Salvador and then arrive to the continent of andarica in Esportiva

-Salvadorans: 20%
-British: 19%
-Russians: 17%
-Eskimos: 13%

Of which are of different religions:

-Evangelical Christian: 96%
-Catholics: 2%
-Protestants: 2%

Language
The national languages of under Article 8 of the Constitution of the Federation of San Jose Guayabal, adopted in The Honorable People's Parliament are: English, Spanish Guayabalense, Russian, and Eskimo (Most used are: English, Spanish and Guayabalian), encouraging the use of language Guayabalian in:

- All daily activities as the language of communication between citizens of the Federation.

-support their teaching in public schools, private schools and universities in the San Jose Guayabal Federation.

But the SJG citizens talk the following languages:

-Spanish: 30%
-Guayabalian: 30%
-English: 15%
-Eskimo: 13%
-Russian: 12%

But 95% of the population has at least advanced knowledge of five languages, making society a society Guayabalense polyglot, highly acculturated and interesting to interact.

Sicoutimont (14)
Qazox (8)
Frusennia (UR)

The official 23rd World Cup of Hockey group draw just was completed, and Qazox have been drawn into what appears at first to be a easy group. A group with 4 unranked teams, and three sub-35th ranked teams seems like Qazox should have at worst 7 wins of the 9 games. But the other 2 games will see clashes with Sicoutimont and Torisakia, two teams that are projected to finish 1st and 2nd (respectively) in the group by most prognosticators.

Here is the schedule:
MD1 (2/6) - Frusennia
MD2 (2/7) - Jeckland
MD3 (2/8) - New North Aqmuland
MD4 (2/9) - Swibia
MD5 (2/10) - TORISAKIA
MD6 (2/11) - Levivania
MD7 (2/12) - The Royal Barangay
MD8 (2/13) - SICOUTIMONT
MD9 (2/14) - Perlasilangan

The 2 capitalized games are the featured live games on QOX, and the other 7 will be shown live on QOX Sports, the new home of Qazoxian International Hockey and Basketball.

Havl and Quebec, but Not All That Bad

The Nova Anglicana Lions have been drawn into group 6 for the 23rd World Cup of Hockey. Their schedule is as follows:

MD1 (2/6) - #44 Nova Anglicana vs #1 Havl
MD2 (2/7) - #96 Lzherusskia vs Nova Anglicana
MD3 (2/8) - Nova Anglicana vs #21 Svengarda
MD4 (2/9) - UR San Jose Guayabal vs Nova Anglicana
MD5 (2/10) - Nova Anglicana vs UR Yttribia
MD6 (2/11) - #10 Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs Nova Anglicana
MD7 (2/12) - Nova Anglicana vs UR Maineiacs
MD8 (2/13) - Nova Anglicana vs #36 Quakmybush
MD9 (2/14) - UR Hicana vs Nova Anglicana,

Unlike last schedule, which was double round-robin and front-loaded with easy teams, this slate of games will be single round-robin and more balanced. The single round-robin format means that the Lions cannot drop points against weaker teams, as there will be no opportunity to make it up. The Lions don't start easy, either, as they take on world #1 and three-time consecutive champions Havl in their first match. It will be imperative for the Lions not to be intimidated, nor to let their performance in that game affect their performance in their next matches. #96 Lzherusskia is second, a game the Lions must win. A draw against #21 Svengarda, who appear to have a bit of a thinner roster, would be a good result. The Lions could then get on a bit of a roll with two unrankeds in San Jose Guayabal and Yttribia. These two Esportivan nations are new to hockey, but familiar to the Lions from football and junior hockey. The next test and really, the only other certain defeat in the group (besides Havl) comes in the form of #10 Quebec. The Ice Knights are formidable opponents, finishing third in WCoH 22. Maineiacs, Quakmybush, and Hicana should be prime candidates for Lions wins, though Quakmybush certainly won't go down without a fight. If all goes well, the Lions could finish 6-1-2 (W-D-L) for 19 points. Whether that would be enough to advance (and in what fashion) remains to be seen. The hosts, Saintland, have, as in their other tournaments, elected to use an unorthodox format, in the form of an "Aussie Style" playoff which places teams that qualify in two brackets, one single elimination and the other double, with the winners of the brackets meeting in the finals. Damn the systems, it's full speed ahead for the Lions in World Cup of Hockey 23!

Anditon Wolverines ready for WCoH 23
Jill Orton -- SAINTLAND

In preparation for the championship that the Anditon populous simply calls "the Big Cup" group draws have been announced for the initial competition for the World Cup of Hockey 23 - hosted by Saintland. The hosts are employing a unique playoff bracket that could play to the currently unranked Wolverines advantage. Landing in Group 3, the Wolverines have one of the more unique draws of all of the groups presented. Their group includes host country Saintland (26 ranked), Ko-oren (ranked 33), Estope (ranked 22) and the highest ranked in the group Equestrian States (ranked 13). These four countries have all participated in one even or another against various teams or athletes from Anditia including a defeat of the Anditon Wolves by the Ko-oren Greenblues during the most recent World Bowl. In addition to the "known" countries in the group, there are 5 additional countries in Group 3 that Anditia has not faced previously - these include Howdeellow (their competition in the first match of group play), Kinzar, Westbridge, Florgania and Sel Appa (ranked 57).
We expect that the Wolverines will excel in their nation's second national sport and should be able to make a decent showing during the group play with at least a few wins against some of the other teams in the group. We expect the Wolverines to make it to the playoffs as a double-play-in team.

Roster
Forwards Unit 1
Position-Name-Number-
RW-Jean-Pierre Dandenault-#17
C-Maurice Rolloton-#28
LW-Jean-Luc Desjardins-#9
-Desjardins is the best player on the team, and is complimented nicely by Dandenault and Rolloton, 2 great passers with a scoring touch to them as well.

Forwards Unit 2
RW-Gaspard Richard-#12
C-Lucien Beliveau-#44
LW-Alex Savard-#22
-Savard, a natural centre, decided to take the role of Left Wing to play on the national team, and he'll fit great with Richard and Beliveau.

Forwards Unit 3
RW-Alexandre St. Laurier-#19
C-Guillaume Lalond-#23
LW-Guy Labaie-#36
-The grinder line of this national team. They aren't the type coach Nillonier will put when down 3-0 with a few minutes left, however, they'd be the type to go out and have a hard-hitting shift to inspire the team and their fans. St. Laurier is also a bit of an agitator.

Forwards Unit 4
RW-Charles Sarulon-#27
C-Etienne Beaucoup-#14
LW-Mark McCluskey-#72
-The 4th line. Not the most skilled players, or not the toughest. These three are definitely not equal to the sum of their parts alone, but together they have impressed in previous tournaments.

Extra Forwards
RW-Hugo Tremblay-#54
RW-Guy Trottier-#66
C-Jean Bouvet-#49
LW-Hugo Armada-#70

Defence Unit 1
RD-Seamus Sinclair-#2
LD-Loic Lenouvre-#6
-The best defenders we've got, Sinclair and Lenouvre are big and tough (6'5 and 6'4 respectively) and can throw around opposing forwards. They bow down in height, however, to....

Defence Unit 2
RD-Julio Archambaul-#3
LD-Elso Kekkonen-#7
-These guys. Archambault stands at 6'11, the tallest Sicoutian player ever, and Kekkonen at 6'8. Kekkonen has impressed playing in the Quebec league, and now, at 19 years of age, looks to continue his success from the last WCoH into this tournament.

Defence Unit 3
RD-Archibald Laurentine-#4
LD-Yves Lapierre-#5
-The smaller, but not less skilled of the defence, Lapierre and Laurentine can play the game better than most on this Sicoutian team, and the puck-moving skills they possess will be of great help in the tougher games.

Extra Defenders
RD-Rick Rover-#60
RD-Martin St-Telesphore-#40
LD-Arnold St-Laurent-#49
LD-Lucas Girard-#79
LD-Leonard Rampart-#33

Goalies
G1-Etienne Bouchard-#1
G2-Louis Lefay-#31
G3-Lucas Giguere-#41
-Bouchard will start most games, with Lefay his back-up. Lucas Giguere will only start if one of the goalies gets injured and cannot play.

Group 2
Torisakia (5)
Levivania (40)
The Royal Barangay (35)
Sicoutimont (14)
Qazox (8)
Frusennia (UR)
Jeckland (UR)
New North Aqmuland (UR)
Swibia (UR)
Perlasilangan (63)

Schedule
(Arenas to be edited in)
MD1: Sicoutimont vs Jeckland, @ Progress Stadium, St. Ioannes, Saintland
MD2: New North Aqmuland vs Sicoutimont, @ Apostolic Arena, St. Paulus, Saintland
MD3: Sicoutimont vs Swibia, @ Apostolic Arena, St. Paulus, Saintland
MD4: Torisakia vs Sicoutimont, @ Progress Stadium, St. Ioannes, Saintland
MD5: Sicoutimont vs Levivania, @ Via Damascus Stadium Rink 2, St. Paulus, Saintland
MD6: The Royal Barangay vs Sicoutimont, @ Civitate Dei Arena, St. Augustinius, Saintland
MD7: Sicoutimont vs Perlasilangan, @ Royal Stadium Rink 2, St. Petrus, Saintland
MD8: Sicoutimont vs Qazox, @ Civitate Dei Arena, St. Augustinius, Saintland
MD9: Frusennia vs Sicoutimont, @ Via Damascus Stadium Rink 2, St. Paulus, Saintland

So, will this team be able to go farther than any other Sicoutian hockey team? We certainly hope so. This team has the talent to reach the Play-Off Rounds, and it will be tough to beat high-skilled teams like Qazox and Torisakia. But, we believe this team can reach the play-offs. We'll have more from the 23rd World Cup of Hockey in Saintland.

Nassau Hessen Eagles Ice Hockey Team

Image

Last Years Results:

Group 8 eventually did turn out to be a pain for the Eagles, with only one win, less that ten goals scored, and a last second last place finish, the Red and Purple will surely hunger for much more. The Hessians are looking to use their little experience to their advantage against many other unranked teams. The boys maintain their expected style level of -1 according to national regulations. The team remained mostly the same roster wise. The Eagles will also be participating in the upcoming Olympics.

TEAM CASSADAIGUA
WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY 23

Coach: Julie O’Connell, 48, 1st WcoH

Julie makes her debut as the woman behind the bench for the national team, but has plenty of experience as player, being a regular fixture as the center on the third line. As a player, she excelled as a defensive forward, winning faceoffs, and a penalty killer, and was awarded with the “A” for most of her international career, and once served as the captain. The nation hopes that she can lead our team to more respectability in hockey, because right now Dagans find the “29th” spot in the rankings to be unacceptable.

(Mixing & Matching of lines can occur at any time. These pairs are the most common lines)

Line 1:

LW: #19- Tara Mercier (24), (6'1" 190)
C: #15- Chelsea Paquette (29), (5'8", 172)
RW: #11- Hannah Tremblay (Captain) (28), (5'9" 184)

Paquette and Tremblay have played on the same line before, but it was the second line in the last World Cup of Hockey. Each have fantastic speed, and can make plays. Tara Mercier has never been in the starting lineup before, so this is seen as somewhat of a gamble by O’Connell, but her style of play in being a finisher makes her seem to be the ideal complimentary player for Paquette and Tremblay. This is Hannah Tremblay’s first time being captain.

Line 2:

LW: #12- Adrienne Martel (30) (6'1", 194)
C: #9- Nicole Lepage (29), (5'11, 183)
RW: #17- Courtney Goulet (25), (6'3", 215)

Martel is a sniper who played on the top line in the last Cup, but ineffective play saw her stock value drop. While some wondered if she would even be part of the team this year, she has continued to play extremely well at home, and has earned another chance. Nicole Lepage possesses a lot of all-around skill and moved on the depth chart. Goulet makes her first appearance into the starting lineup, and possess a very hard slapshot, and does not back down from physical play.

Line 3:

LW: #20- Caitlyn Lafontaine (29) (6'4" 223)
C: #8- Jessica Shaw (Alternate Captain) (27) (6'3" 216)

RW: #18- Brianne MacNeill (23), (6'4", 218)

The checking line returns two of its three regulars from the last cup, that being Lafontaine and Shaw. Jessica Shaw is a younger version of the head coach, and for the first time is rewarded with an “A” on her jersey. MacNeill enters the starting lineup for the first time, but should fit extremely well here.

Line 4:

LW: #23- Justin Rivers (22), (6'1", 182)
C: #27- Kristen Carver (23), (6'2", 197)
RW: #22- Melanie Foster (22), (6'0", 190)

O’Connell steps away from the goon-ish fourth line, and instead opts for a line of younger offensively skilled players who may not be completely well-rounded yet. That ton of potential makes them an intriguing addition to the team, and all three are making their international debut.

D Pair 1:

LD: #3- Danielle Gagnon (29) (6'0", 188)
RD: #4- Travis Curry (Alternate Captain) (30), (5'10", 180)

Gagnon is an offensively minded defense, who will often join the rush and serve as a great PP quarterback. Curry is the opposite, and can be best described as a stay at home type. He gets the “A” on his jersey for the first time.

D Pair 2:

LD: #7- Kelsey Petersen (23) (6'2" 203)
RD: #6- Sarah Mason (31) (6'3", 201)

The young Petersen has turned a lot of heads in Cassadaigua and is rewarded with her first appearance on the national team. She is well rounded, and will join the offensive rush at times, though not as aggressively as Gagnon. Mason is like Curry, and prefers to stay back.

D Pair 3:

LD: #5- Nick Boudreau (30), (6'4", 227)
RD: #2- Jacques Allard (29), (6'5, 233)

Each are punishing hitters, though defensively responsible. Despite his age, this is Allard’s international debut.

Goaltenders:
Starter: #35- Rachel McGrath (27) (6'2", 195)
Backup: #33- Katrina Trottier (22) (6'5", 220)

McGrath was the third stringer goalie on the last roster, and gets called up to the starting spot as coach O’Connell shakes things up. Rachel is just entering her prime, and that has shown at home, winning the Melanie Roy award (best goalie) the last two seasons. Trottier is a young goalie making a huge impression in Cassadaigua, and is someone to look out for in the future.

Specialty Teams:
PP Unit 1: Mercier-Paquette-Tremblay; Gagnon-Peterson
PP Unit 2: Martel-Lepage-Goulet; Mason- Allard
PK Unit 1: Lafontaine-Shaw; Curry-Mason
PK Unit 2: Martel-MacNeill; Boudreau-Allard

Also with team (usually announced as scratches before a game)
G- #31- Jennifer Nilsson (24) international debut
D- #42- Justin Cairns (28)
D- #44- Emma Graves (26)

Amid Tragedy, the Tournament Goes On,
by Rachel Sharper, Concord Heights Times

As Cassadaigua celebrated their 20-19 win over West Guiana in World Bowl 22 to win that championship, benefitting from a missed extra point, tragedy struck the nation of Saintland. Though the game took place in the Free Republics, King Paulus XV of Saintland and was at the game watching from a private suite. It would have been interesting to hear his reaction to our nation win a championship in a sport that still too many think is a game only for men, but due to the actions of one person (or maybe a group of people), the king is no longer with us. Prince Petrus takes over and is now the new king, King Petrus XX, but still many are wondering how such a crime could have occurred, and feared if the tournament would still go on in Saintland. King Petrus XX, himself a superstar athlete, is doing a great job trying to bring his nation together through a most difficult time, not only for the nation, but for himself, to have lost his father in such a manner. He has declared that the tournament will go on, and that is the best thing. Sometimes it is sport that can be the best healer of emotional pain like this, even if it is just a temporary fix.

A statement by Queen Cassie certainly sums up the thoughts of our nation the best:

“People of Saintland, please know that myself and the people of Cassadaigua are truly in a state of sorrow concerning the loss of King Paulus XXV, and we express our sincere condolences over this incomprehensible tragedy. While there are many things that our nations disagree on, you have our true support right now. We hope that soon the shooter will be captured and brought to justice, and that anyone who my have assisted the shooter also be apprehended, and if there is any way we can be of assistance, please let us know. For King Petrus, I understand how difficult this is for you to inherit the crown in this manner. Your father had all of my contact information, and if you ever need to reach me about something, please do so at anytime.”

The World Cup of Hockey, will go on in spite of all this. So for the Cassadagan national team, the question becomes how can the national team rise up from its stunning spot in the rankings, a mere 29th. Unlike other sports, which can use the absence as an excuse, hockey really can’t, as our national program was on the decline even before that. Once again, the roster had received a face lift, starting at the top with Julie O’Connell, a woman who played in eight World Cups of Hockey, known for being an outstanding defensive forward and penalty killer. Julie excelled at the little things, and will do her best to instill that philosophy in the national team. Looking at the roster, you can see a lot of changes being planned, even if some of the names remain the same. You have people in different spots on the depth chart, and more of an emphasis on the all-around type of player over people who specialize in certain aspects of the game. One of the largest changes is Rachel McGrath will be between the pipes, after having served as a 3rd string goalie in the last World Cup. “Rachel has earned this over the last two years with her play at home.” said O’Connell, and the numbers certainly back that up.

If you wish to see the team play live, you can of course watch the games on TV or online, but if you want to be there in person, you need to head to Saintland, as all games will be played there. With so many games being played, it is expected that you should be able to get tickets. If you do choose to go, please put aside any feelings you have about their national culture and realize that they are a nation in mourning. King Petrus XX has rightfully declared that “any disrespect for the memory of my father will NOT be tolerated”. Don’t expect to be bailed out by our government either if you get in trouble, as Queen Cassie stated, “Any Cassadagan fan who goes to Saintland and is disrespectful for their state of mourning will be handled by the government of Saintland, only. Do not expect us to come to your aid. You must act appropriately.” Cassadaigua will be in group 1, and highlights of the group stage, which is a single round robin, feature Valanora, and Vilita & Turori. It’s a difficult group that drew a couple of potential tricky unranked squads, as well.

Let the puck drop!
The Mashers are ready, well as ready as they can be with the limited time they have had together. They haven’t even played an organized game as a team yet so this first game will be interesting to say the least. The team is a collection of the best HHL players, but without many of them playing together we’re not sure what will happen. Now this doesn’t mean that none of the players have played together, Coach Howe has the lines set up so some players are going to be on the ice with teammates, which we see as a good thing, while some of the others are composed of the best match up he could think of. They lines might even change after they get some ice time under their helmets, but we’ll have to see how things play out. Our plan for you, our hopeful loyal followers, is that before each match we will bring you a preview of that match along with some comments from Coach Howe and we will also highlight one of the lines for the Mashers. They may not be in that particular order but they will be included each time.

Looking over the teams roster and line selection it was tough to choose which one to cover in this, our first edition covering the World Cup of Hockey, but we went with line 1, also known as the Gold Line, as that seemed like a logical place to start. Coach Howe informed us that this line will often be paired with the Pairing 2, so we’ll cover them as well.

Line Highlights - Gold Line
#95 Rostislav Nikodim Yakovlev – Yokovlev a 19 year old hailing from Zorg will be the right wing for the Gold Line. He is a powerful skater and very quick with the stick. He is said to have the hardest slap shot out of all of the team members, although it’s his writster that leaves goalies plucking pucks from the webbing. His wrist shot is so quick that there is even a blur to his stick when looking at it in slow motion. The only drawback to this winger is his passing, not that he is a bad passer he simple doesn’t look up to see if a defender is blocking the path to his teammates. As for rating this right winger, we both put him at third on the squad and the youngster has some room for improvement.

# 99 Mathias Olov Normansson – Normansson a 24 year old from Glacier will be on the left wing for the Gold Line. He is fast, lightning fast on the ice which can sometimes get him in trouble as he is notorious for being off sides, he also tends to over skate the puck when he’s at full speed. The thing we like about Normansson is his passing, he’s a precision passer and can sail a puck through two or three defenders without it being touched. We actually saw in one of his league games that he deliberately bounced the puck off of an opponent right into the path of a teammate just because he only had one hand on the stick and couldn’t back pass, it was rather impressive to see. He should make for a good compliment to Yokovlev on this line. We both ranked him as the number two right wing on this squad.

#10 Drahomir Robert Hustovi – Hustovi a 23 year old from Glacier is our Center for the Gold Line. He actually grew up in the same school district as Normansson but the two have never played together as Hustovi opted to play for a youth club team rather than the schools program and now the two are on rival teams in the HHL. He is a balanced player, but one of the best that is good at almost everything. His passing is almost perfect and rarely misses his target, his shooting is great possibly even exceptional. Griffinsmith was actually at the Players Challenge this past year and saw Hustovi go 25/25 on the target goal challenge. Yes that was impressive with the closest competitor at that event only hitting 17/25 targets. He is also the team captain and will be the leader on this line. Griffinsmith has Hustovi as the number one center, while I Orpheus has him as the number two center on the team.

Likely Defensive Pairing with the Gold Line
# 12 Emmanuel Marin Girard – Girard a 22 year old from Nortal will likely be the left defender for this pairing as he is much better on that side of the ice. He is a hitter as he likes to push the limits when it comes to boarding and charging, and if the refs are off their game expect some huge hits from him. As for other skills he is a mediocre defender, with his strength being his physical stature. His passing is okay and don’t expect him to shoot much even if an opening presents its self. Both of us see Girard as the sixth overall defender for the Mashers.

#08 Emeric Michael Masson – Masson is from Rainiernugget and can play on either side of the ice. He is a very balanced defender that is great at shot blocking. In a single game this past HHL season he blocked twelve of the opposition’s shots, rather nice for his goalie for sure. He is a moderate passer and can shoot from range at times. He will defiantly balance this duo out. Orpheus sees him as the second best defender, while I Griffinsmith see him as the third best overall defender on the team.

With this five on the ice at the same time we expect a balanced attack that will likely look to get the puck up to Hustovi for his distribution. We feel most shots from this group will come from Yokovlev and his amazing wrist shot, but don’t be surprised if Hustovi puts in a few for them as well.

Howe’s Howl
Well I’ve assembled a team; some excellent talent from HopNation will be representing the Mashers on the ice for this World Cup of Hockey. I’ve played a lot of hockey in my day, coached a good chunk as well, but I’m not sure what to expect here. We’re up against some of the best in the world, from looking over the group we have four un-ranked teams and we fully expect to win those matchups. Then we’ve got five top fifty nations, two of which are in the top ten. I think we can possibly get a couple wins there as well, but will be happy with a draw. Then there is just one other team who is outside the top fifty with a ranking, which we should get a win there as well. I don’t necessarily see us making it past the group stage, but a top 5 finish in the group is within reach. I wish our first match would have been against one of the other un-ranked sides but you get what you get I suppose. We’ll be up against Valanora, the number three ranked team, so it will be a tough match and I’m hoping to gauge were we are at after this one sounds the final horn. What I’m looking for is good play and for us to keep it close, I don’t need us to go out and get a bunch of penalties and put ourselves in penalty kill situations. Don’t get me wrong I have full faith in our penalty kill but would much rather keep it even on the ice or even with us on the power play. Well, we’ll see what happens I suppose.

Match Preview – Game 1 vs. Valanora (3)
This game will be played at Royal Park and will be the first game of the day at that venue so the ice should be good, not that they don’t have good Zambonies but playing first at a venue is preferred if you ask us. The opponent will be very good in the Mashers first outing at WCoH23 as they hold the current world rank of third. They are a skilled side and will rely on their face paced style of play to try and out class the Mashers. We don’t expect many penalties if any in this game as both teams seem to have very few if any players that are considered penalty hogs. Though if there are any, they will likely be against the Mashers since they have less experience and the Valanora side is known for playing clean. The Calcuttas are no slouch when it comes to winning either, as they have three WCoH Championships under their belts and are looking for their fourth. The Calcuttas are led by team captain and left wing Imenein Lithloth on their first line, also on that line is vice-captain and right wing Laerbelidon Taltauré. The next player to take note of is on line two for Valanora, it is the other vice-captain and center Voronthal Falasumé. These are by no means the only players to consider when looking at the Calcuttas roster, but figured we’d wait until a game has been played to weigh in on any of the others. The Mashers on the other hand are captained by Robert Knutsen who is the center on the Black Line, he is assisted by Emeric Michael Masson who we covered earlier. We think starting goalie Lucas Pierre Faucheux will be tested often, but will do a great job in this first game. In the end we see the score ending in favor of the Calcuttas with the Mashers at least getting one.

Score Prediction – 5-2 with Calcuttas coming out on top.

Well that’s it for us today, wishing the Mashers best of luck in game one. Brew on! Brew well Hoptonians!

The groups have been set for the World Cup of Hockey. Maineiacs will be in group 6, which promises to be a tough challenge. here are the nations grouped with us:

San Jose Guayabal (UR)
Yttribia (UR)
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec (10)
Nova Anglicana (44)
Quakmybush (36)
Hicana (UR)
Havl (1)
Lzherusskia (96)
Svengarda (21)
Maineiacs (UR)

As you can see, we've been grouped with the top-ranked team in the Multiverse, Havl. Many fans here at home are dismayed to learn that Maineiacs is not ranked, but it is necessary to remember that we have not competed against other nations in several years. But neither should that be taken as an indication that our team will not be competitive. Furthermore, our early exit from the soccer World Cup has no bearing here. This is not soccer; this is hockey. OUR sport. Our team knows their sport inside and out, and stands every chance of going toe-to-toe with anything the Multiverse can dish out. While we cannot be overconfident, we also should not be viewed by opponents as a throwaway game or an easy victory.

Here is our schedule for the single round-robin group stage:

GD1: San Jose Guayabal
GD2: Hicana
GD3: Yttribia
GD4: Havl
GD5: The Royal Kingdom of Quebec
GD6: Lzherusskia
GD7: Nova Anglicana
GD8: Svengarda
GD9: Quakmybush

Tournament begins in two days. MSPN will carry all games on your vidscreen.

Gregoryisgodistan Preview of World Cup of Hockey 23

The schedule for World Cup of Hockey 23's group stage was unveiled last night. The Ice Slaves will be in Group 5 with nine other teams. All games will be played in Saintland. This alone will present an interesting challenge, as every game will have the feel of an away match in front of the Sanctii crowd. With the possible exceptions of Cassadaigua and the Equestrian States, neither of which is in group 5, no country is more disliked in Saintland than Gregoryisgodistan.

Here is a preview of the nine group stage matches.

Game 1: Arkiasis Gregoryisgodistan's first opponent is ranked 44th in the world, to the Ice Slaves' ranking of 27. Gregoryisgodistan is the favorite here, but it is a potential trap game with the Northern Sunrise Islands up next. That being said, the Ice Slaves are still probably going to pull this one off. Prediction: Win 2-0

Game 2: Vettera An unranked opponent. This should be an easy match for the Ice Slaves. Expect them to roll to victory. Prediction: Win 3-1

Game 3: Free Republics Perhaps the most heavily anticipated game in the entire group stage. Currently, Gregoryisgodistani football player Enemy Crusher Porky von Porker is in Republican prison standing trial for first degree murder. The trial is currently underway, and the prosecution has already made its case that he is guilty. Tomorrow, court-appointed attorney Bonifacio Udinese will make his case that his client is not guilty. Then, it will be time for the jury to deliberate on the verdict. It is possible that we will know before faceoff whether the brave and noble Enemy Crusher has been found guilty or not. If he is indeed found guilty before this game starts, we could see some retaliation from the Enemy Crushers on the Ice Slaves. However, King Petrus XX and his late father have both warned that antics from the Enemy Crushers will not be tolerated by the authorities. This could lead to yet another Enemy Crusher convicted of murder or attempted murder. As for the game itself, Free Republics is unranked and making its debut. We don't expect this one to be much of a contest. Prediction: Win 4-1, two attempted crushings of Republican players, coaches, and/or fans, one enemy crusher in Sanctii prison.

Game 4: Northern Sunrise Islands The Ice Slaves get set to face the second toughest team in this group in the fourth game of the group stage. It will not be an easy match. However, the Ice Slaves played fairly well against NSI in the last WCoH and this is a much better team than the last one. It will still be a big challenge. Maybe the Ice Slaves will surprise the Islanders again, but it will certainly be a close game. Prediction: Tie 1-1

Game 5: Cosumar The 63rd ranked team in the world is next up for the Ice Slaves. This in theory should be an easy matchup for the Ice Slaves, but at the very least they will be 3-1 and overconfident looking forward to the match against Darmen the next day. This match will be closer than it should be, but the Ice Slaves will pull it out. Prediction: Win 2-1

Game 6: Darmen Another tough matchup for Gregoryisgodistan, the second one in three days. Darmen is 16th in the world, and unlike NSI, this team has not been fodder to the Ice Slaves before. Gregoryisgodistan will keep it close, and the Enemy Crushers will be great in goal, but this one will just be too tough in the end. Prediction: Loss 1-0

Game 7: The United Regions Who exactly is this team? Nobody has heard of them. Gregoryisgodistan should roll right through this matchup. Easy win. Prediction: Win 4-0

Game 8: Orlana Another unranked team. As long as the Ice Slaves keep their minds focused on this game and don't think ahead to the big matchup vs. Soviet Canuckistan, they will do fine. Easy, easy win for this team. Prediction: Win 5-1

Game 9: Soviet Canuckistan Heading into this match, we expect the Ice Slaves to be 6-1-1, sitting on 19 points. Depending on what NSI and Darmen do in their other games, this one could very well decide the group. At the very least, Gregoryisgodistan should be guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16 with a win. A loss would likely put the team in third and force them to play in a playoff game to advance to the round of 16, but they should have enough points to be in the top 4 third place teams if that happens. It is possible they will wind up in second. At this point, Soviet Canuckistan looks to be the favorite, but a lot could change between now and then. Expect the team to play valiantly, but barely lose. Prediction: Loss 2-1

Our math geeks predict that there is a 0.3 percent chance these predicted results will be good enough for the Ice Slaves to win Group 5, a 21.1 percent chance that it will be good enough for second, a 75.4 percent chance that it will result in being one of the top 3 third place teams, a 0.2 percent chance that it will result in being third place but not advancing to the playoff, and less than a 0.1 percent chance, but still a chance greater than zero, of finishing fourth. It is mathematically impossible for these predictions to result in the Ice Slaves finishing fifth or lower in their group.

Lzherusskia Drawn Against World #1, #10 Squads
Early Reports Indicate Havl, Quebec Teams "Shaking In Their Skates"

Let's be frank - while none of the six groups are what you might call "easy", drawing the undisputed best team in international hockey is an intimidating prospect for any squad, much less the team we recently discovered are not unranked but, at #96 in the world, may as well be. Still, the fact Lzherusskia is ranked makes us an automatic favourite over four of our upcoming nine opponents so, with a little luck and some fortuitous calls, we might just emerge from this World Cup with a record over .500. Here's all the detail we could find on our opponents.

MATCHDAY ONE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC (10)
This is going to be a slugfest, plain and simple. The Ice Knights have been accused in the past of picking players primarily for their pugilistic prowess over any kind of skill or work ethic, but it's obviously a formula that's been working for them - the #10 ranking doesn't lie. It's a particular nasty game to get drawn first, because Quebec have a reputation as a very aggressive and just as notably, extremely dirty team to play, so not only are we likely going to lose, there's a distinct chance we'll also lose one of our stars in the process.
Prognostication: A lopsided defeat. With luck, it stays only a three-goal deficit.

MATCHDAY TWO: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. NOVA ANGLICANA (44)
The campaign won't get much easier here, because the Lions are an irritating little team that a) are incredibly well-disciplined, b) play good defensive hockey of the sort that Spalchik Levitisz demonstrated when they won the domestic championship a few years back and c) are vastly underranked. This is a team that should be a top-twenty side - Kermit Lea, in particular, is a sniper on a level that practically no international team anywhere would turn their nose up at - and the emphasis on discipline means that Aleksander Trapeznikov is going to have to be on the absolute top of his game to score some penalties.
Prognostication: It finishes a one-goal game, but Nova Anglicana take the lead early and don't let it go.

MATCHDAY THREE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. QUAKMYBUSH (36)
I know nobody wants to admit it, but the chances are extremely good that we start off zero-and-three. Unlike the previous two games, this is a confusing one - Quakmybush teams barely appear to care about their conduct on the ice and have been the beneficiary of some ludicrous calls from referees we can only assume were heavily bribed. Nonetheless, they were unranked just two Cups ago, and there is no reason why we can't follow their successes. Goaltender Roger Akerman is getting on in years and as we all know, when goaltenders age their reflexes are the first thing to go.
Prognostication: Refusing to lose three straight, the upset is pulled off.

MATCHDAY FOUR: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. HICANA (UR)
FINALLY. We can't comment on the intricacies of the Hicanan roster because this appears to be their first World Cup and they haven't given the rest of the world anything to work with, but the long and short of it is that we're significantly better than an unranked side, and there is no reason to expect we won't emerge from this with a victory.
Prognostication: Not a complete demolition, but the skill level makes itself known in a solid Lzher win.

MATCHDAY FIVE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. HAVL (1)
To be frank, we may as well not even bother turning up for this one and taking the forfeit loss. Havl go into this World Cup looking for an unprecedented fourth straight victory, we're just here to hope for a few wins and seriously, wouldn't it be so much easier if we simply didn't show up? We'd get some more time to recover from a tough start and not risk the players' morale getting shattered by being destroyed.
Prognostication: Defeat, and that's all I'm going to bother saying because anything else will depress me.

MATCHDAY SIX: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. MAINEIACS (UR)
We were entertained to see that officials from the Maineiacs hockey programme produced a very pissy little press release whining about how people were treating them as an automatic win. At the risk of tempting fate, we're going to do the same - they can complain all they want but, to be blunt, they don't have any serious international experience and we can hit harder than they can. Again, there is no reason to expect us to completely destroy them because they could well be better than anybody expects, but when in doubt, take the ranked team over the unranked one.
Prognostication: A one-goal win in a scrappy, nasty little game.

MATCHDAY SEVEN: LZHERUSSKIA (96) vs. SVENGARDA (21)
We're hoping that this is a technical fault or a a mistake on the part of somebody at the Svengarda office, but it appears the Ice Hawks' roster consists of twelve players. Bless you guys for your optimism, but there's a reason hockey dogma says you don't substitute goaltenders in and out of the game like you do other players.
Prognostication: If that's an accurate teamsheet, then this is our best shot at an upset. Trading goalies in and out is impossible to do quickly and robs them of any momentum they might be able to build up.

MATCHDAY EIGHT: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. SAN JOSE GUAYABAL (UR)
MATCHDAY NINE: LZHERUSSKIA (96) VS. YTTRIBIA (UR)

Thank goodness for two final games against unranked sides. With what we expect to be two wins in two, at least the team can come home with their heads held high as well as some experience of playing against the best teams in the Multiverse. SJG will probably be the sterner test of the two, playing an attacking style not a million miles from our own, but we're confident our top six is capable of matching and beating whatever "skill" players either roster can bring to bear.
Prognostication: A two- and a three-goal win and, if we're really lucky, our first shutout of the tournament.

From sportsblog.mai:

Isn't it sad when people have to resort to arrogant boasting and taunting? MSPN's little homily might have been a tad condescending to hockey fans here in Maineiacs, but how is that any of Lzherusskia's business? They think it will be a nasty little game, eh? I hope our boys give them just that. I say we use the battered bodies of their team to Zamboni the ice, then show them some REAL gloating by throwing a parade when we've beaten them. Look, I'm not usually given to patriotic BS, but this is hockey. We were fools to think we could compete in soccer, but this is our game. It's actually good to know that they aren't taking us seriously. It'll make winning all the sweeter. You read it here, folks: I predict we finish the round-robin 4-5 and beat Lzherusskia 2-0 in a game that features more ejections than goals.
