Svengarda SuperLiga

After a messy period of fractured regional football, the boffins at the top of the SFA have pulled together a 10-team SuperLiga and a 12-team GrandeLiga beneath it. The 10 teams will be taken from the three regional champions and the rest of the teams have been sold to the highest bidder. The teams have been dispersed amongst the major towns and cities in the country, with two in the Capital city Helsingborgs and two in the city of Helsirn. Each team carriers a roster of 19 players, with the availability of up to 4 Foreign players if they can sign them. The season will be a double round-robin with each team playing home-and-away. The relegation-promotion system is 2 up 2 down, with the second GrandeLiga promotion spot being decided by play-off.

SuperLiga Season 1 Preview

From the murky depths of the Regional Football League, which reigned supreme over a 3-year dark age of Svenga football, which confidentially coincided with the highest point in Svenga National Football, with the team reaching the World Cup. After the team reached the World Cup a second time, the SFA pulled their finger out and got stuff sorted. That sorted stuff is now the reformed SuperLiga, complete with 7 Franchise teams, sold to the highest bidder, combined with the three previous Regional Champions.

The favourites for the season are most probably HJK Helsirn. Boosted by national team players Hakan Lager, captain Georg Raske and reserve keeper Vanja Albertsen. They also posses U21 hot-prospect Emil Heikki who has been banging goals in in the U20 Leagues. HJK will face stern opposition from FK Arula, who although have lost the services of Kari Steffansson, still have Pal Lorsen, Reko Saari, Torleif Olhouser, Serko Jansen and recent Felixian signing, the midfielder Andrej Dusan. There pace off the ball with be a key for them, but other than the superstars aformentioned, the remaining 6 have under 30 domestic caps between them. Potential contenders might also appear in the form of FK65 Helsingborgs & Royale Helsirn.

Down the bottom, it has to be the Regional Champions who will struggle: little money, local players and facilities a cut below the new franchise teams. Out of the three, the islanders Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika will probably the strongest, but it is all up in the air at the moment.

5 Players to Watch:

1. Serko Jansen (FK Arula)

Has always been second best behind Truls Waaserson in the national side, and will be looking to make a serious impact in the SuperLiga. Expect goals from this man.

2. Emil Heikki (HJK Helsirn)

Probably the fastest player in the league, he possesses a blistering turn of pace and a lethal shot. This should be his breakthrough year, combining the emergence of the SuperLiga & the U21 World Cup in Starblaydia.

3. Andrej Dusan (FK Arula)

The Felixian midfielder topped the assist charts back home, and FK Arula will be hoping he can provide the same for Serko & Co.

4. Canamazán Fajú (FK Etelärannikolla)

An electric and deadly striker from Charruterra, he has spent the last three years knocking around Academies and Regional Football, but signed up instantly with FK Etelärannikolla. Candidate for Golden Boot Award.

5. Kiki Bergman (Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika)

Another U21 prospect is Kiki, following in the footsteps of Kari Steffansson. She has played hard in Regional Football, helping Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika to the Kurrika Region Title and thus gaining them entry to the SuperLiga. Kiki is a nimble wing back, an expert at distribution but also no pushover in defence.

Golden Boot, Ruotsalainen Award (assists) & Golden Glove tallies

Top Scorers

1. Serko Jansen: 6 (FK Arula)
2=. Emil Heikki: 5 (HJK Helsirn)
2=. Canamazán Fajú: 5 (FK Etelärannikolla)
3=. Hakan Lager: 4 (FK Arula)
3=. Jinni Nurma: 4 (MTK)

Top Assisters

1. Loreen Steffanssen: 6 (SKA Royale Helsirn)
2. Andrej Dusan: 5 (FK Arula)
3=. Aatu Jokela: 4 (MTK)
3=. Jazeps Vang: 4 (FK Etelärannikolla)
5. Mikael Gunnarsson (Kallstorm Union)

Most Clean Sheets
1. Jarmo Jakinen: 5 (MTK)
2= Vena Lakssonen: 3 (SKA Royale Helsirn)
2= Tanya Nikula: 3 (FK65 Helsingborgs)

The season so far has thrown up some interesting talking points: MTK, outsiders originally, sit pretty at the top of the SuperLiga table, with a generally good all-round team performance. Their 12 goals, although smaller in comparison to FK Arula or FK Etelärannikolla, have come from all over the field, and Jarmo Jakinen has been a rock between the sticks, conceding just 5 in 9 games. He might be pushing for that national team spot on these performances. They sit two points ahead of FK Arula, who've been scoring over 2 goals a game, led mainly by Serko Jansen, with six goals, assisted by Felixian Andrej Dusan with 5 assists. Midfielder Hakan Lager has chipped in with a useful four, including a brace in the comeback win against MTK in Matchday 5 at the MTKArena.

One point behind Arula are SKA Royale Helsirn, driven mainly by the ever-present Loreen Steffansson, who's 6 assists have been invaluable to the team. Keeper Vena Lakssonen, has kept three clean sheets to be tied second in the Golden Glove standings. HJK Helsirn have been somewhat off the pace this season so far, 6 points off leaders MTK. Emil Heikki has been doing the heavy work up front, scoring 5, but otherwise, the big names have been either under-performing or sidelined with injury, and the team will be looking to turn it around in the second half.

Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika & Lapua State FK unsurprisingly sit in the relegation spots. The gulf between the franchises and the Regional Sides has been evident, especially in defence. Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika have shipped 17 goals, including 4 against FK Arula at home. They have, however, recorded a shock away victory against HJK Helsirn in Matchday 8.

FK Arula secured the maiden SuperLiga title on Matchday 16, winning at home against SKA Royale Helsirn and watching MTK go down 1-0 to HJK Helsirn. Arula went unbeaten for the second half of season and lost only two games in the entire season, in MDs 6 & 7, topping the table with 40 points from 18 games. Serko Jansen was the main man upfront, topping the Golden Boot charts with 12 strikes. He netted the season's only hat-trick when he scored 3 in Arula's 4-0 away win at Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika. Players from Arula took home both the Ruotsalainen Award (for Assists) & The Golden Glove award, with Felixian Andrej Dusan assisting 10 times and national team keeper Pal Lorsen keeping an astonishing 8 clean sheets. Arula were fantastic all-round, and well worthy of their Champions Cup spot.

Runners-Up MTK will be disappointed that they let their 1st half advantage slip. They just had to keep winning, and although they won 3 out of their 4 second half games, a loss to Arula led to 3 straight defeats and the loss of a title challenge. Jinni Nurma tried his best to keep them in it, but he couldn't provide for a team that was slowly grinding to a halt, even with 9 goals. Pre-season favourites HJK Helsirn joined Loreen Steffansson's SKA Royale Helsirn for the other two Globe Cup spots. Valkeavuoren SK recovered from a poor opening half to the season to finish a respectable 5th, with Ren Danielsen pushing to replace Rihards Ruotsalainen in the national team with 5 goals and 8 assists. FK65 managed to draw over half of their games, so despite losing just four games, the second best record in the league, they only managed to finish 6th.

This season we will say goodbye to two of the three Regional champions: Jalkapalloklubi Kurrika & Lapua State FK, who just couldn't bridge the skill gap, finishing both with 18 points.

The game of the season went to Matchday 10's fixture between FK65 Helsingborgs & MTK, which finished at 3 a-piece. Jinni Nurma opened the scoring for MTK on 11 minutes, before National Team defender Saar Bjornsen headed powerfully low past Jarmo Jakinen from a corner to equalise. FK65 then took the lead through a sensational strike from midfielder Sohna Nylund, who took the ball sweetly on the half-volley from 20 yards and smashed it low past Jakinen.

MTK came back in the second half through Larten Paavilen, who's jinking run through the FK65 defence ended with a curling shot from a tight angle to bring the game back to 2-2.

FK65 striker Anton Toivonen thought he'd won the game when he bundled home a cross on 89 minutes, but 4 minutes into injury team, Aatu Jokela's tall ball forward was misjudged by the FK65 defence, allowing Paavilen to sneak through and round Tanya Nikula and roll it into the net for an enthralling finish.
