Valeria and Constantine had deployed on the outskirts of Cape Town, but close enough to see Gilberts mech with optics zoomed in. They had deployed together as a fire and support team, with Valeria having her Sturmgewehr Assault rifle out and Constantine lining up all the aiming reicules for his Beam Rifle.

"Val and Con at LZ, ready for orders." said Valeria into the comm, Constantine just answered affirmative with a comm click.

William walked up to the deck of the transport ship and gazed out at the city before him. The huge ports, the sandy beach, and the bustling urban jungle. But the most prominent feature was the giant wall which enclosed the city on land. nicknames Die Groot Muur, it was a colossal 50 meter high wall which towered which wrapped around the city only stopping at its shores. It was wide enough to drive two tanks side by side and still have enough room to march a platoon. Every 50 meters there was a command post, every 25 meters a gun emplacement. This is what kept Cape Town safe from the zombies.

William smiled widely. He was home, but not for long. Only for this mission. William got off the transport and got into his VALK Jagter. He activated the VALK and started walking towards the city. He turned on his comm so everyone could here. "They built the wall higher. When I was here last it was about half the size it currently is," he said, "Anyways, good luck everyone. And welcome to my home."

Monfrox wrote:However, Charlotte and Allison were sent out to the South African Gama HQ about ten klicks Northwest of Cape Town. The two arrived to quite the beehive of activity, as the base was still trying to stall the PRoteus forces from reaching Cape Town until the Valkyries were in position. "Okay....so where's the commander here...we'd better start getting ready." Allison said as she walked in and went about finding a locker room of sorts.

Gustav had hopped aboard the transport as they left the Gama base that the VALK pilots called home. He had no intent of being left behind on this one; certainly not when there was valuable data to gather in the field. Maybe he could scavenge a few downed Proteus units after the VALKs had finished with them and pull some pilot data off of the ruined machines.

The armored man walked behind Allison and Charlotte, his onboard AI already analyzing and recording the flow of chaos around them. Accessing the base's data-frame using the Gama codes and encryptions, he downloaded the base's schematics and pulled up an overlay on his HUD. "There are command points here, here, and here," he said, pointing to a few larger structures on the base, not including the hangars. "Those are possible points of command. Also possible targets for the Proteus forces should they arrive here. I'm sure they're already aware of this, but it might be a good idea to remind them."

Anna hadn't even time to request a new VALK, the next mission briefing started too soon. She listened to the spiel, usual. Proteus launching a chemwep attack on someplace or the other. It was always all over the news, and quite the dire threat to Humanity. She sat through the briefing, and, once dismissed, headed out to prepare her VALK for combat. It was the same old routine, slipping out of her jacket, making sure her hair was tied up to avoid snagging on anything, and then sliding into the ever-familiar cockpit of her VALK. She initiated the interface software, and in a flash of light seen by her only, her conscious was transferred out of her body and into the VALK.

It mentally grinned, finally back in the saddle, with the much more fragile body kept safely within. Anna ran through the regular checks, and then quickly went to board their transport to Cape Town.

Allison was busy trying to figure out which way the two of them were supposed to go. Much of the base personnel were fast-walking to and from rooms. Many bits and pieces of conversations floated around, but it all hinted at the same thing. Proteus was on the way, and they were getting ready for quite a brawl. "Sooooo....." Allison started. The silence of the conversations followed by boot heels clicking together caught her attention. A woman was walking down the hall towards the two, followed eagerly by some of the uniformed soldiers. "First and Second squads will wait in the hangar just outside the runway." "Yes ma'am." Two of the four soldiers immediately turned around. The woman handed off a piece or paper to the third. "Here's the pilot's flight plans for the operation." "Thank you, ma'am." Three down, one to go. The woman stopped in front of the two Valkyries and faced the lone man. "Make sure the mechanics have checked the helos and that they are fueled up. I don't want a repeat of last night's excursion." "Of course ma'am." The soldier hit the floor off with his heels as the woman turned to see Allison and Charlotte. "You must be my 'liaison officers'." She said.

"If you want to call us that." Charlotte replied. "I don't really know why HQ sent only two people, but by all means if its killing Proteus I'm glad to lend a hand."

"Glad to hear it." The woman replied. "My name is Melissa. I'm the base commander for Gama's African detachment." She had quite an unusual smile about her.

"It's a pleasure." Charlotte said.

"Very well, if you two would be so kind as to follow me then I'll give you a quick rundown of the mission ahead."

Charlotte followed behind Melissa. Thinking more about her own plan of action for when things hit the fan in a few minutes and she was out in the battle.

Allison stepped lively next to Charlotte as she was led. "This mission is simple. Should be no problem for two characters of your statures. We will deploy two squads of soldiers to reinforce the Cape Town security forces around the main gates. This is where we'll expect the spearhead. You two will each command your own squad of about roughly 12 troopers each. Keep Proteus out and your head on your shoulders, and this will be nothing more than a cakewalk. Questions?"

"I got one." Charlotte asked, a grin spreading across her face. "Where's the best building for me to set up shop?" She said gesturing for the railgun rifle she picked up from the armory at HQ.

"That's quite a hefty piece you have there...I'd imagine some of the skyscrapers are still standing, but not sure if you can spot the distance from them. Your best chance is finding your way up some of the other buildings near the gate. I'm sure the city has employed snipers as well, so you may find an already prepared roost." Melissa replied.

"Good enough for me." Charlotte said. The commanding of a squad would be new to her but she figured a single squad should be easy enough. Especially if she had a view of the field from a distance.
"Right, well you two should go off and get ready. Meet me in the hangar in no more than twenty minutes." Melissa said.

Charlotte headed off for the locker room to change. She was comfortable wearing nearly anything on a mission but given how many weapons she had there had to be someway to carry ammo for all of them. She opened a small duffel bag she brought and pulled out a vest with mag pouches of varied sizes, as well as a couple leg holsters and a backpack to hold whatever wouldn't fit into the pouches. She went about putting all of them on and putting a magazine into each pouch. In total she had the rifle, two Super Vs, a side arm, a knife and enough ammo that would get half her squad through the day.
Feeling content that she was ready she headed toward the hangar and waited for the commander to return.

Allison headed behind Charlotte and off into one of the other locker rooms. She put her pack down and pulled out her various implements that she got from the beach trip, as well as her combat clothes. She took her day clothes off and slipped on a black tank top and a pair of black fatigue pants that had been cut short of the knees. She put her boots on before strapping on her kneepads and elbowpads. She slipped on her armored Kevlar fingerless gloves and then dipped her three fingers into the black face paint. She made four thick diagonal black lines across her face before she put it up and put her pack on. He donned a utility belt and some web gear that had pouches for the various magazines. One her way back, she stopped by the base armory and picked up some frag grenades before walking into the hangar with her MG21E hanging down in front of her. "Well you two certainly look like you're ready for war." Melissa stated. "Meet your squads. Fisher, you'll lead Coyote 2. Turner, you'll be in charge of Outlaw 1. If there are no further questions, then off to the helos you go." Outside, the helos looked like regular UH-60 Blackhawks.

Charlotte walked to the helo, and rested her rifle on her shoulder. Her squad showed up shortly after. Each of them seemed to take a split second pause when they realized that the woman before them was their squad leader for the day. She looked like she had enough firepower to defend the city herself. "Alright load up. I realize I'm a pretty face, but don't think you can slack off. I don't do liabilities so if you don't maintain yourself out there, I'll drop you like the Proteus soldiers you're fighting against."

Outlaw 1's helo was the first to start up. "Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is Cliff "Elvis" Wolcott, I'll be your pilot this afternoon. Federal regulations designate this a "non-smoking" Black Hawk helicopter. For those of you who have the "Cape Town Frequent Flyer" program, you'll be earning a hundred free credits this afternoon, and as always, the air sickness bags are located in the seat-back, in front of you." It was only minutes before the helos took off from the base and headed inland. The trip took them along the coast. "That's a nice beach down there." One of Coyote 2's troopers said over the radio. "How's the water?" The pilot looked over. "Yeah, it's nice and warm...and it's loaded with sharks."

At this time, the helos made their approach, dropped off their customers, and egressed back to base. And not a moment too soon. On the horizon, Proteus forces had gathered and were pushing fast for Cape Town after the other Gama forces had been ordered to stop stalling and pull back to regroup. "Lock and load!" Allison shouted as she slid in a belt from the MG21E's box mag and pulled the the bolt. The brawl was about to start.

William arrived at Die Groot Muur's base. He looked up the height of the great wall. "50 meters is easy enough," he said, "And light is still shining." He flipped a switch which turned on the thrusters on his wings, elevating his mech a bit. He then flipped another switch which turned on his feet thrusters. He planted his feet on the wall and started skating straight up the wall. He was going incredibly fast, speeding up the length of the wall. He reached the top and thrusted himself upwards, launching himself into the air. He could see the whole area from here.. He landed on the top of the wall with a thud, causing some cracking where he landed. Nothing serious to the wall.

He flipped off his thrusters and surveyed the area. On the wall were plenty of personnel, but not enough to fend off an attack of this scale. Even with such massive defenses, William doubted it would hold out from a full scale Proteus invasion. Some looked shock, some looked scared, and some looked confident. Immediately in front of the wall was a cleared area filled with mines and other traps. A couple hundred feet was the ruins of the outer city, which lay uninhabited since the attack 6 years ago. Outer yonder was the old walls, which lay crumbled from damage. And beyond that was the plains and hills, which the Proteus were approaching from.

"Incoming Proteus. Holy shit there are tons of them," he said. He brought up his rail gun sniper and took a prone position. His Cuttlefish Camouflage made his VALK light grey and concrete textured. He looked down his scope and trained them on a hefty Proteus VALK. He fired, sending a HEIAP shot through it. It crumpled and fell to the ground, exploding into a fiery mess. "One down, god knows how many more," he said.

Gilbert heard William's transmission and instantly realized it was time to move. "Let's go people. This cities safety is out top priority so lets do what we came here to do. Stop Proteus." He said. The Guardian's system announcement chimed in as the Valk prepared to join the fight. "Main system: Engaging Combat Mode." He took a ready stance and the Guardian shot skyward and out towards the edge of the city, and beyond the wall. He brought it to a hover above the destroyed outskirts of the city and locked onto one of the Valks in the distance. A missile shot forward toward it, splitting into four smaller ones mid flight and hitting the Valk from all sides destroying it.

A grin showed across Charlotte's face when she heard that proteus was moving in. "Take up defensive positions!" She ordered to her unit.
"And you ma'am?" One of the soldiers asked.
"I've got a plan of my own." She said pulling out the compact railgun. She loaded in a magazine and a battery power supply and headed to the top of the highest nearby building. After setting up shop she scanned around and found an armored truck within the enemies ranks. "Will you walk into my parlour?" She said to herself with a smirk. The gun whirred progressively louder over the course of a second and then with a crack the gun fired and the truck exploded in a large fireball.

Gregory made a visual on the attacking force. "No kidding, I'm going to try something. I think you guys should shield your eyes for a few seconds, It's about to get very bright out." OK activate mortar system. A barrel sprouted out of his mechs back. locking on to one of the enemy VALK's in front of the Select round, BFL, fire He barely even heard the sound as the 155mm projectile launched. Closing his eyes he still felt a slight pain as a wave of red filtered in. But for the unsuspected enemy it was shear hell. The BFL (Bright Fucking Light) was officially known as the M840 stun bomb and was basically a far larger version of the flashbang grenade. Gregory could almost imagine what that pilot went through. Maybe he saw the 15lb object before it exploded five feet from him, showering him with glass, oil, and hydraulic fluid as the shock wave shattered his cockpit and burst the lines in his VALK. It probably also knocked him out, which was a good thing as the 10 lbs of magnesium powder went off momentarily creating a second sunrise in Cape Town blinding anyone looking in its direction. This same explosion set the the oil on fire causing the machine to turn into an oven and cooking off its ammo.

By this time, much of the Proteus forces were practically knocking on Cape Town's door. The VALK forces estimate upward of 30 to 40 easy. A convoy of APCs, APVs, and Troop Transport trucks were heading on the way, carrying Proteus 'missionary' forces that numbered well about the hundreds. For the religious organization itself, this was nothing more than a small force, but they seemed intent on taking Cape Town this time. The enemy VALKs spread themselves out and began to engage the Valkyries, trying to tie them up and sometimes ganging up with two or three on one to give cover to the ground troops that were about to be deployed to the front gates.

"Just another battle." The feminine, yet metallic voice rang through the systems.

Anna, or, the VALK that housed her consciousness, and her body, took up its position on the front lines. Being a smaller VALK, she could concentrate on taking out the smaller enemies, while she figured the larger Proteus units would go for her last, due to her size, and (From the outside) diminutive weapons. They held quite the punch however, and she picked off a few small vehicles, before focusing in on a closing-in enemy VALK, firing into its legs with the dual cannons on her arms, peppering the canopy with deadly nail-rounds from the twin auto-cannons on the "Shoulders"

Shells littered not the ground behind her, thanks to the weapon's design, shaving off a tiny projectile block of metal to fire off at extreme velocities. She could fire without stopping for an hour, but in real battle, where one wouldn't be shooting that long, ammo usually always held out the entire battle.

Val and Con

Constantine had put his VALK into a kneeling position, adjusting his aiming reticules and fired of two bursts from his Schwere Rifle, blowing off the head of a Proteus VALK and taking the legs off of another seeking to flank right. While Valeria fired bursts from her VALKS assault rifle, damaging another Proteus VALK before having to get behind the cover of a few outlying office buildings due to return fire. She swept her VALKS head around and blazed with the Vulcan Mini-guns for a full three seconds, destroying an APC and killing a dozen Proteus Infantry, but the pair was heavily outnumbered and the buildings they hid behind were being chewed away as Proteus forces ground on.

"This is Valeria, Constantine and I report three downed VALKs and at least two dozen enemy ground forces KIA's, report, heavily outnumbered, cover failing." said Valeria as she tried to keep calm under the pressure of battle, which was as unforgiving as it always was.

Gilbert was engaged in a firefight with a pair of enemy VALKs when he heard Valeria's message over the comms. Gilbert was always known to stretch himself thin to try and maintain his own fight while protecting his allies on the battlefield, however a little flag went off in his head when he realized it was her that needed assistance. The blue eye of his VALK shot a look over to her and Constantine's direction and then back to his own two minor problems in front of him. "Hang on, I'm on the way." He said. He switched his thruster direction backwards and upwards as his missiles locked on to the two VALKs. Four missiles launched from his valk's shoulder mounted launchers, each splitting into four micro missiles and drowning the two VALKs in their explosions. Throwing it into full throttle he turned and sped off to support Valeria. He launched two missiles at the closest VALK to their position and it exploded into a fireball. He landed in its place, the VALKs rifle and machine gun both leveled and pointed at separate enemies. "You rang?"

William had a Proteus VALK in his sights. He fired, sending a shot straight through the torso of the lightly armored VALK. It stopped functioning, letting its velocity carry it forward into the minefield. Several loud explosions went off in unison and the VALK was sent flying into the air 20 feet before landing in a heap of burning metal. William looked up from his sights. He had been firing at enemy targets and was starting to run out of ammo. He check his status to see he had 3 rounds left. William smiled and looked back down at his sights. "Three more VALKs and I'll-" he said before cutting himself off.

Out in the distance, a squad of Proteus VALKs were approaching a large colonial mansion. They looked like they had the intent of tearing right through it. William set down his Gauss rifle and stood up from his position. He switched on all his thrusters and leaped off the wall, hurdling at the group with incredible speed. He flipped a switch which released his VALK's sword, which popped out from its left wrist. He approached the lead VALK, a bulky and large varient. He sliced upwards, cutting straight through the VALK. It stood there for a second before it fell into two pieces and explode. The other two VALKs were shocked to see their leader taken out so easily and started firing at William. But William was already gone as he had turned on his stealth camouflage when he landed and dashed to the side. A second later, a sword lunged straight through one of the VALKs, destroying its engine. The other one fired at it but ended up firing at its ally, finishing the VALK. William brought his VALK behind the last enemy and delivered a finishing strike to its torso, cleaving straight into the engine and fuel tank. He took his blade out of the VALK, letting it fall and explode. He turned off his camouflage.

He walked his VALK over to the colonial mansion. It was grand in size and surprisingly undamaged. After all the years of abandonment and devastation, it was quite shocking to see this building in one piece. William stared through the VALK's visor at the mansion with a deep yearning look. He had half a mind to get out of his VALK and enter the place. With some effort, he took his gaze away from the mansion. "I can't go out now. Cape Town needs me," he said. He turned his back to the mansion. "Later, definitely later," he said, "Right now, I gotta stop this attack." He them walked off to face the enemy.

Valeria sent Gilbert a quick thanks as Proteus rounds hit her position, causing her to roll her VALK rather abruptly behind another building. Constantine fired again, taking an arm and shoulder from the VALK that had fired on Valeria. They were getting close and it was getting harder to get kill shots like it was at a distance, he'd have to take quicker shots but with less punching power.

3 km outside of Cape Town, South Africa
Miroslav lay back in his valk, sleeping lightly as always, when a loud boom and a crash shook the machine. He sprung to his feet and peered out the view port infront of him lay a city, on all other sides lay slum. Taking control of his valk, he began to advance into into the city.

Radioactive

As the enemies advanced on Valeria, Constantine, and his position, Gilbert retreated to a safe area behind a large grouping of abandoned highrises. To the outsider it looked more like he was abandoning his friends to die, but he just needed a moment to think. Once there he took a second to focus before directing his attention to his radar, giving steady display of the invading mass of enemies. There were obviously enough to overwhelm their position if left as they were. He closed "his" eyes, given that his neural link made his VALK's cameras his source of vision he couldn't really call them his. He was trying to come up with an idea of what to do that would stop their advance. But given what his VALK had to work with he only saw one option.

With a series of loud mechanical klunks a shell shot out from the side of his rifle as the supply of readied ammo replenished. He opened his eyes trying to mentally prepare for his next course of action. It was risky and reckless, just the way he liked it. He drew in a gasp of air, and released. Not bothering to start out full throttle he took off into a VALKs typical heavy sprint around the buildings into the open street. He raised both guns and fired into the crowd, not scoring a kill but he frenzied a couple after hitting a vital spot and disrupting the mech's sensors.

Using a building as a spring board he jumped from it and launched a pair of missiles into the crowd, two of the VALKs exploded showering the rest with dirt and debris. He had an idea of how to prevent them from being overrun and if it was going to work it had to be done now. Still in the air from the jump he landed on a building and ran from one to another toward the crowd at the edge of town. Continuing his hail of supressive fire he peppered the group until he had made his way to the frontlines by Valeria and Constantine. "I've got an idea, but you're not gonna like it." Gilbert said. Without waiting for a response he advanced and jumped for the hole in the enemies formation from the two valks he destroyed.

He landed there, diverted power to the thrusters and with a second jump he sped past the enemy just over top the VALKs' heads. They all turned around to follow him as he passed. Well I've got their attention. He thought. That's a good thing. He sped past the back of their formation and skidded to a stop about a hundred yards away from them. Due to the size and speed of the VALK, a large cloud of dirt was left around his valk before it finally settled to the ground. Just as he stood back up and took a look around a large group of hostiles had turned to follow him.

"Alright, well I managed to take some of them off your back for a while." Gilbert said. He knew that Valeria was most likely going to kill him for jumping into the line of fire, but it needed to be done. He raised both weapons again and changed his comm channel to the external speakers. "Com'ere ya outta date tin cans! Let's dance!" At that the bullets began to fly and Gilbert darted back and forth across the area. His mobility really was his saving grace. He could change directions so quickly that the enemy couldn't keep a lock on him. In total he scored about 5 kills before he realized that what he was doing wasn't going to cut it. While he wasn't getting hit, just using his rifles was taking too long. Time to bring out the big guns.

His VALK's systems gave him the green light. The system unequipped the rifle in the right hand, replacing it with a device about the size of the mech's forearm. The air around his right arm shimmered for a moment and then there was a crack of thunder. An energy lance came to life, shooting from the end of the device and extending far enough to scorch a hole through the sand.

"Shinso Lance activated." The system responded. He overclocked the boosters and shot straight into the ranks of the enemy VALKs. As he broke through the other side there was a clear line of enemies that had a 5 meter wide hole through them as they crumpled to the ground and exploded. It wasn't necessarily the most efficient weapon but it was probably the most effective weapon any of his VALKs had. Stopping long enough only to change directions, his VALK exploded off of its right foot and flew through another column of enemies. They met a similar fate as he slowed and turned for the rest of the group. "There, now that's much better." he said with a smug grin.

Shepherd of Fire
Gregory had moved to the abandoned remnants of a church out side of the wall. Approaching were 4 light mechs with a group of 2 medium and a heavy VALK guarding a group of APC's, probably a spearhead looking for a gap in the defenses. Gregory Backed his Valk, named Duch Szabla or Ghost Sabre, behind what remained of the back wall.

The First scout had just swept the building when Sabre struck, grabbing the Mech by its right arm and throwing it into the back wall. Activating the sword in its left arm Gregory swiftly cut the arm off at the shoulder and proceeded to use it as a weapon striking the Valk across its from as it turned to bring its left side gun to bare. the arm crushed the canopy creating an opening that he stuck his rotary cannon in finishing the pilot off with a point blank burst. This attracted the attention of two of the other scouts, which entered the church substantially weakening the front wall. Gregory backed over the wall and opened his chest rocket launcher firing to missile on the structure collapsing the bell tower on the two mech's with a loud clang.

Using the dust as cover he circled around to the APC's betting that their escorts would rush to the church. finding them unguarded he quickly took care of all but one with his cannon and sword as he closed on the last one he saw one of the medium's raise its gun at him. Lifting up the APC as a shield he was thrown back by the explosion. Gregory grabbed the rear axle of the vehicle throwing it at the mech to keep it from firing again. Grabbing the front portion of the APC he charged the VALK hit it over the head with it before pining the VALK to the ground. He proceeded to rip the right arm off coating him in oil before plunging the sword into the VALK's head.

Before charging the three remaining VALK's Gregory took stock. Ammo and fuel were still good with only a slight hydraulic problem in the right shoulder due to the near miss. that could be fixed later. As he ran he fired two AP rounds at the group that separated into 8 projectiles in free-fall. He closed line the last scout before sliding on his knees. he jammed his sword in the mediums left knee before unloading the 30mm cannon on that spot. As he slide out o the group he fired two more missiles at the heavies right knee. before any could responded the rain of 8 shaped charges hit them destroying the three and ending the fight. Covered in oil he made his way over to Valeria, Constantine, and Gilbert. "Did I miss all the fun over here?" he said examining the smoking pile of mech's.

Slaughter
"Who the hell put this girl in charge?" "You're kidding, right? She's our squad leader?" "She's only a kid, though!" "Can't be more than 18, 19 tops." "Bet she doesn't even know how to use that thing." "Maybe the commander finally lost it?" "I'd rather be in that other woman's squad. She looked like she could handle herself." "Looked pretty good, too." "This one's alright, but she's not very talkative." "I think she's scared. Not used to playing outside her toy, you know?"

Allison heard, yet did not acknowledge, her squads banter about their doubt in her abilities. She watched as most of the battle took place out in the distance, but the trucks and APCs that made it to the gate were offloading troops. Troops that began setting charges on the gates, ready to blow it. While they did, the other Proteus VALKs were still giving the Valkyries hell. They were still pressing hard on them.

Allison brought out her MG and put her hand to her communicator. "Coyote 2 Actual to Outlaw 1, take five over." She said. She looked to the squad behind her. "You boys might want to get down." The squad just slunk back 25 meters behind cover as Allison just walked away from the gate. The belt in the MG21E was ready, and her box magazines were good to go. Her face paint showed the true attitude of a warrior. She shot a look up to Charlotte's roost, wondering if she was looking at her. There was the faintest, faintest hint of a small smirk that lasted for only about a second or two tops before the gate, which was about 15 meters away, suddenly exploded. Dust covered the area for a few seconds. The squad watched on as Proteus troops entered in. They aimed at Allison, as she was the only one immediately visible. The faint smirk was gone now, and she steeled herself.

Allison swiftly spun around, and brought the MG up to her hip. She grabbed the side foregrip and pulled the trigger. The MG roared as bullets were sent flying to Proteus troops. They fired back, but under the hail of rounds, were just blind-firing while trying not to get hit. Allison walked forward a little as the MG dropped man after man while it recoiled. She kept control and kept it steady on her hip as it rocked and spat bullets. Proteus troops were finding it tough to get accurate shots in under all the suppressing fire, and her squad didn't even think to help her. They were completely awestruck as this teenage girl, who looked like she was playing pretend soldier, was killing the soldiers with ease. She dropped the magazine and started running to the side as she dodged fire and put the next box of rounds in. Before opening up again, she pulled the belt though and racked the bolt to chamber a new round.

The other squad, which remained pretty much unscathed as of now, began to focus fire on Allison. She reacted by sprinting across the open ground faster than they could bring their guns around. Bullets kicked up dirt around her as they missed. She jumped up to a building's wall and sprung her feet off it. The troops tried to follow up, but many were reloading. She took advantage of that and sprayed into their ranks, dropping a good number of them to the ground. One even took a round between his eyes. She landed a few feet from them and sprinted back around to focus on the previous squad that was trying to recover from the beating they just were given. They too tried to follow Allison as she ran and keep her in her sights, but she was too fast for them.

The rounds flew by Proteus troops, and many were thinking that she was missing on purpose. However, a truck behind them lit up and turned into a fireball that engulfed another inbound squad of troops before Allison brought it home and used it to begin chewing up the cover that the missionary soldiers were hiding behind. She circled around and tore into several other men before changing directions and dropping the MG lightly on the ground. She grabbed her knife and pistol in either hand and jumped the cover. She brought the knife into the head of one such unlucky individual before firing off a pistol mag into the others, finishing yet another squad of 12.

A Proteus APC, which looked like a heavily modified version of a Russian BTR-90, drove in and trained it's cannon on Allison. It aimed and fired, but missed and Allison hopped up and out of the way. The BTRs turret was also finding it hard to track Allison, but it was doing a better job than the troops. It's 30mm rounds kicked up dust and blinded the gunner temporarily. Allison ran around and jumped up onto the APC. She shot off the latch and tossed a grenade down the hatch before kicking it down. A low thud was heard and the APC crew went dark. A slight groaning was heard as the troops that were being carried, began to disembark with shrapnel in them.

Allison slid down and put her knife to the throat of one and brought it into another's chest. Her pistol's was slide locked back, showing an empty chamber, so she spun around. In doing so, the knife she used to stab a trooper in the chest, came out and whipped at the final soldier who left the APC. Before he could react, the knife stuck right under his helmet in his head. Allison reloaded her pistol quickly. Looking at the remnants of the other squad that was down to 4 men, she fired off another pistol mag after reloading, before tossing a frag grenade at them. The resulting explosion cleaned them out.

Allison took stock of her kills. 3 squads of 12, plus the APC crew and passengers and the transport, put her at around 48 total soldiers killed, one troop truck destroyed, and one armored vehicle knocked out. She looked back and noticed that Proteus transports were coming in for a second try, and in larger force this time. She walked back and retrieved her knife and MG21E. Her squad was speechless to say the least, but it didn't last long. "Coyote 2 Actual to Outlaw 1 Actual. Let's see if you can top that, over." She said before joining her squad, using the direct use of Actual to personally challenge Charlotte. She replaced her box magazine and sat, watching the vehicles draw ever closer.

Gustav observed the chaos from above, his face stoic but his mind roaring with ecstasy. Why he had avoided the battlefield for so long, he didn't know. But now that he was here, he was going to gather some worthwhile data. No way was he going back empty handed. Standing up from his spot on a terrace, Gustav jumped down to the ground and began running toward the frontlines, vaulting over fortified Gama positions and weaving between clusters of soldiers. A few, startled, discharged their weapons at him, but fortunately for him nothing hit. He was only protected against shrapnel and some smaller caliber weapons.

Reaching the wall separating the city from the battlefield, Gustav began climbing it like the lizard he resembled; his claws sank deep into the material as he scaled the massive construct. Reaching the precipice, Gustav hopped down and rolled to absorb the impact.

It looked like he had fallen into hell. Bullets were flying all around him and explosions buffeted him with concussive force and shrapnel. A group of enemy soldiers spotted the scientist and began shooting at him, sending a veritable wall of metal shards flying toward him. Gustav jumped straight up, grabbing an overhead ledge and hauling himself over it and ran away from the city.

After several minutes of dodging enemy units and avoiding a bad case of mutilation when enemy and friendly VALKs exchanged fire, producing a storm of debris and splinters as munitions exploded and ruptured old gas lines, Gustav arrived at the remains of a Proteus VALK. He dropped down upon it, climbing over to the cockpit's entrance and keying it open with a program he had written while waiting for the battle to commence. As the cockpit opened, he tensed. But it seemed to be empty and, as he was sweeping the interior of the suit, Gustav heard the unmistakable sound of a pistol's hammer being cocked.

William continued his assault on the Proteus forces. He had his camouflage activated, making him a ghost on the battlefield. He ran up to a charging VALK and sideswiped it, tearing out its back. The top half of the VALK crumpled backwards and then fell, unable to move. William went up to the VALK and stabbed his sword through its torso, destroying the engine. It was the last VALK in that area. No enemies would be approaching from this point. He scanned for other enemies and saw an VALK in the area. It was operational, but it wasn't moving. "Best check it out," he thought.

He arrived at the area to see the VALK, the robot man, and a Proteus pointing a gun at him. "Oh shit," he thought. He ran and cut the Proteus soldier, tearing him in half. Entrails and blood were thrown everywhere. William turned towards the robot man, "Gustav, is it?" he said remembering his name, "Are you trying to hijack that VALK?"

Valeria and Constantine moved a a fireteam, Constantine cracking off aimed shots at Proteus ground forces and VALKs, while Valeria applied supressing fire from her VALKs Sturmgewehr Assault rifle. Valeria gritted her teeth, Gilbert was being risky, but effective, she juked right dodging a round from a Proteus VALK. Adjusting her aim she mowed down a pair of APCs with soldiers surrounding them, Constantine put a beam of energy through a VALks chest plating, killing the pilot via incineration. But the fighting was fierce as small arms fire bounced off their VALK armor plating, an RPG slammed into the shin of her VALk, causing a jutter. Armor piercing, they've learned.

"Attention HQ, enemy has Armor piercing weapons in our sector, adjusting tactics accordingly. Over."

The Gama base in Africa was much different than the one in New Mexico, as Jack had learned on his first day there. Since it wasn't designed mainly for teenagers, many things were more strict, especially in the more war-torn area. That suited him fine though, the more professional atmosphere allowed him to get more work done more efficiently, though he chaffed with Melissa and the Africa base's leadership when he tried to extend his patrols in his VALK.

Jack had been rebased to South Africa after the rumours of a future Proteus attack on the city had come to light. The WARBIRD by itself wouldn't be an effective counter to an army of Proteus VALKs, but he and the soldiers of the base could hold them off if the attack came earlier than expected so that the other Valkyrie could arrive in time.

Jack rolled out of bed, tired. He had been up with a book for most of the night, though he had been thinking instead of reading for most of it. Fortunately, a lax sleeping routine was one of the things that he had carried over from the New Mexico base, much to his surprise they were more than willing to accommodate him. He put on a pair of old jeans and a blue sweater, not paying much attention to what he was wearing. He was going to the simulator.

Jack rarely practiced hand-to-hand combat or using guns, he saw no use or it and no potential in him to be good at it. He instead practiced his skills while in his VALK, as well as more cerebral skills such as math or other languages using the simulator. He spent about an hour in the simulator until he realized that sleeping in had made him skip breakfast. He quickly grabbed a few waffles from the cafeteria and munched on them while walking. He had been asked to be there for the briefing of Allison and Charlotte, to be briefed himself, but he was late.

Melissa quickly briefed him, chastised him for being late, and sent him on his way to the armoury, where he started activating the various parts of the WARBIRD. Jack exerted his connection with the VALK and the chest opened to reveal a chair with a few screens, lit with a soft blue glow. Jack hopped inside, the opening in the chest closed, and an expanse of grey wires and sensors automatically came down around Jack's head, allowing him to interface with the VALK. "This is Ensign Jack, the computer's saying everything is in working order. I'm going to head out to help my teammates and whatnot, Melissa can translate that into military jargon-ese if you can't understand me. I'm going to go ahead and launch."

Jack exited the compound inside of the WARBIRD. Freedom. He though to himself, enjoying the feeling of walking around almost as much as he had the first day he had interfaced with a VALK. The rockets on its feet slowly pushed the heavy VALK into the air, where its wings deployed and Jack skyrocketed into the clouds. As he made it into the air his VALK slowly turned forwards, and though the chest cavity stayed upright the video feed from the outside let him see the land below and the sky above him. "Way more amazing than I remember..." he muttered to himself, looking at the sky. The mood turned serious when he looked below and saw the VALKs fighting. He coasted towards them, blowing dust away from the ground below him, then cut the rockets, landing on the streets near one of the fights. He aimed his railgun and fired, causing a loud noise and causing the Proteus VALK in front of him to fall over. He had aimed too high, if he had hit the legs it would have tumbled easily but since he aimed for the chest he was lucky it hit something vital. "This is Ensign Jack." Jack said, switching his comm to that of the other Valkyrie. "Long time, no see." He said jokingly. He was silent for a second. "Right, yes, the killing part. Those APCs should be easy prey. I'd prioritize the VALKs if you can. And remember, aim for the legs."

Proteus forces were thinning out indefinitely, but the battle was only at the most, halfway done. A second wave of VALKs and ground vehicles started heading towards the walls. This time, Mobile Rocket Artillery vehicles and tanks were among them. "Valkyries. Prioritize those tanks and artillery. The ground troops will be torn to shreds and the security forces don't have any anti-tank weapons to combat them." Melissa said, watching the battle happen from the command center at the base.
