On A Wing And A Prayer, Part VI

Over the North Sea, January 1941

His coming to grief in a form of a game of Cat and Mouse with the German fighter had costed Charlie in other ways than his life. His Spitfire felt a little sluggish as he tried the controls as he put some distance between himself and the Norwegian coast, though more concerning was the engine running rough. He wasn't certain but he suspected he may have had an oil leak, but he couldn't tell from the gauges on the dashboard. It was questionable whether the Spit would carry back all the way to Blightly, but every mile it completed meant him being a step closer to home. Course he really wasn't fancying his chances of ending up in the drink, nor his chances of finding a navy ship to bale out over.

This op was turning into a real dicey-do one.

He could stay up high where the air was thinner and he could use his altitude to build up speed when needed and also to give him a bit of room to glide home, though landing was another question entirely. Flicking the switch, he dropped his undercart and saw the three red lights, signal his undercart was up and locked, go out. No greens...arse.

Three greens would've meant that his undercart was down and locked into place, but he had no way of telling if his hydraulics were out or the electrics shot. If the former was true then he was dreading the prospect of a touch bottom landing, especially only a couple of months after he'd pranged the Beaufighter over France. His only hope was that the engine held out until the Shetlands came into view.

It almost did.

Just after the Merlin engine spluttered and coughed in its death throbs, Charlie spotted a break in the ocean ahead where the waves crashed against a small rocky island. A quick check of his bearings on a map revealed that he was approaching the eastern extremities of the Shetlands, this was a huge relief but he still had to land the ruddy aircraft with a dead engine and damaged controls. Right now Charlie's main concern was his altitude, he had a very small window of which to work with if he wanted to get down in one piece. He could swing round, bleeding of some height as he used the wind to moderate his speed. It wasn't ideal and there was no chance of a second try with a dead engine, but it had to do. The thought struck him that he could simply bale out close to the airfield, but that would mean letting the Spit crash and potentially destroying the photographs he'd been sent to get.

OK Charlie, decision time... He muttered under his voice as he weighed up his options before saying, "Ah screw it."

He pushed the stick forward a notch and rolled the Spitfire to staboard before doing a lazy roll to port, thus making his approach to the runway at RAF Scatsta. Once he'd lined up on the flare path he dropped his cart and flaps as made his final approach, once again the green lights failed to light and so he kept the Spit's down further than he'd was comfortable with as he aimed for the start of the runway in case he ended up touching bottom and doing a belly landing. Just before the runway threshold he pulled back on the stick, bringing the Spit's nose back up as he braced himself for a crash landing. Much to his surprise he felt a bump as the wheels hit the runway, making the Spitfire bounce before it settled down probably. All Charlie had left now was to gently apply the brakes, making the Spitfire slow down as it rolled down the runway.

Already some of the airfield's trucks and ground crews were racing towards him as he slid back the canopy and climbed out of the cockpit, finally seeing the hits that the aircraft he taken. The fuselage was pot-marked by bullet hits and the cowling round the side of the engine was black. He had to count himself lucky that he managed to get back at all, though he also realized that the camera may had been shot to bits. Right there and then he didn't really care, he simply brushed aside Holden as he made a beeline for the mess with every intention of getting a stiff drink.

Behind him, the ground crew carefully lifted the camera out of the shot up Spitfire.
