Backlash to Mormons in Western New York

Postby German American States » Sat Oct 19, 2013 7:55 am

So, every summer in a town in Western New York named Palmyra there is a festival/pageant called the Hill Cumorah Pageant. This commemorates the birth of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Palmyra is the town where Joseph Smith started the religion, and was kicked out and moved to Utah, where a good deal of Mormons reside today. I live 10 miles or so from this town, and every year around this time people flock from all over the world to Palmyra to watch the pageant and celebrate Mormon culture. Another group of people who flock there are Evangelical Christians who protest the religion saying it is wrong. They come from all over Western and Central New York to protest, and this usually garners a bunch of media attention.
Source

There also has been backlash from the Mormon policies of trying to make the town a holy site. They have been doing this since the 1900s, but it has increased since the Pageant was started and the Mormon temple was built in Palmyra.
Source
There have also been rumors from other congregations in the town that the Mormons are trying to aggressively convert members and try to purge other religions from the town.

Personally, I think its fine for them to celebrate their religion, but I am a little against the rumors of them trying to convert members and buy up land in the town.

So, NSG, what do you think about the Mormon's(and Evangelicals) attitude in the area?

Rumors shouldn't really be taken into account unless they can be realistically verified.

I've been looking for a source on it, but its more a local argument.

Secretly tape the confrontations with the Mormons, hand it to the police. I am sure there are laws about forcefully trying to convert people to a religion.

The land aspect, if they have the money and the people are willing to sell then I see no issue.

its good for local business to have all those Mormon pilgrims come by every year.

there is no problem with anyone buying any land that is for sale. there is no problem in the US with evangelizing. those who complain are whiners who don't want Mormons to succeed.

Unless of course they're just trying for their own personal Colorado City.

I for one wouldn't. I think Mormonism is one of the most destructive brands of Abrahamic religions.

But then I hate Evangelicals even more and I'm one of the most religionist posters in NSG so...

The only solution is to take up arms either they or we shall die tis day, but at the end of tis day things will be decided.

It is more of a protest to a protest branch of Christianity so it hardly qualifies as a separate religion.

Solution: Make the town stop existing. Preferably with high-yield explosives on the day of the festival.

The virulent aspects I see in Christianity tend to be very often shared with Islam, sometimes shared with Judaism and as far as my experience goes also with the smaller ones (that I tend to see as an in-between of Judaism and Islam in progressivism and attitudes).

Anyway, my point is that I see Mormons as crentes (the Evangelicals are the "masters" of all crentedom themselves :p ). Catholic, Spiritist, non-Christian and irreligious Brazilian intolerance to crentes is somewhat similar to inter-ethnic hatred.

Call it the symbolic annual re-enactment of the original driving them out of town and keep both sides happy.

Why not have a shootout at Carthage jail or collapse of the Nauvoo financial market instead?

Why would I bother?

The same why my hometown shouldn't be a shrine of Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Mormons, Scientologists, über-traditionalist Nazi-like Roman Catholics, any kind of Islam or whatever freakish cult, shameless sham and/or extremely reactionary and primitivist interpretation of religious texts and tradition you find out there.

When it comes to people who openly promote and support either Paulinist (as Bluth puts it) or Mohammedan Shari'a, the worse they are, the better for me.

Perhaps this a good time to remind you that you've recently lost a nation for serial breaches of the rules; you're not off to a good start here with your new nation.

For the thousandth time already, my genuine belief as to a perfectly good and optimal solution to the problem is not trolling. Get off your anti-genocide high horse already, will you?

1) The underlined is untrue.

2) Reacting to a moderator warning by openly admitting that you're advocating genocide against a group represented in NSG, and telling the moderator to "get off his anti-genocide high horse" isn't a good idea.

So people who fought for gay marriage in California are whiners.
