World Cup 66 Roster Thread

Postby Audioslavia » Wed Sep 11, 2013 1:30 pm

Nations that have signed up to World Cup 66 should post their roster / squad list / available players here.

What to put:

If you're entering World Cup 66 then your nation will be playing a minimum of ten football matches over the coming weeks. Goals will be scored, defenders red-carded, star strikers confined to the physio's table by an errant outstretched leg or flying elbow, but exactly who are these people? That star striker.. does he have a name? Which club does he play for? Is he tall? Is he fast? Is he even a 'he'? Is 'he' even human? Does your team comprise of semi-sentient robot-Aardvark clones hell bent on violence? Or are you more of an orthodox humanoid 4-4-2?

This thread is where you tell us.

A standard, real-life international squad comprises of anywhere between 18 and 30 players, eleven of which will start a given game. Standard squads for the actual World Cup tournament itself are, in real life, limited to 23 players, but here on NS the general consensus is each user decides how large or small their squad is.

If the whole 'realistic' thing isn't for you, that's fine. As long as you make an effort to make your team fit with a rough narrative (asserting that your nation is comprised of eleven immortal goddesses who cannot be beaten won't be too believable if you're a lower-ranked nation, and telling us your players are all aged twelve yet are somehow ranked in the world's top ten is just as unbelievable) and you've put a bit of effort in, you'll have done things properly.

Do you have to name each and every player and coach? Down to the reserve full-back and kit-man's assistant? No. If you just want to concentrate your RPing efforts on a select two or three personnel, that's fine. List them here and tell us a little about them so that your opponent can roleplay your game without having to wildly guess at what kind of person/player your star striker is. We'd suggest at least 'naming' eleven or so players, just so your opponent has a name to throw in their rather than 'their goalie' or 'the other team's striker', but those of you who prefer to weave stories based on just a couple of characters won't be penalised for glossing over the majority of your playing staff. Again: Put a bit of effort in, give your roster post a bit of tender loving care and take into account what your opponent needs from a read of your roster, and you'll have done things properly.

What else to put in? Well your nation needs a home stadium, right? Maybe its a monolithic enormo-dome with space for seventy-thousand partizan fans and a an IMAX video-replay screen in every corner, or maybe your national team plays on a run-down college field in front of three blokes and a dog and utterly beneath the radar of an indifferent public. Maybe your nation has banned the sport entirely and you need to play accross a border? Either way, tell us a bit about the 'stadium', the city or wasteland that surrounds it, and your nation in general.

The Technical Stuff

Style Modifiers are the one and only way you can exert control over the scores your team will receive that doesn't involve any work on your part. While RPing well and/or often will raise the chances that scores will go in your favour, your style modifier will tell the world what kind of team it is you're putting out. Maybe you're ultra-cautious, defensive and stubborn, or maybe you play a devil-may-care brand of kamikaze attacking football? Or maybe, like most of us, you're somewhere in between?

Style modifiers range from -5 to 5, with -5 being ultra-defensive and 5 being ultra-attacking. 0 is average. If the scorinator decides your team is going to draw its game, a +5 modifier raise the chances that your match will finish 4-4, whereas a -5 modifier makes it more likely the match will be 0-0.

If you could put your style modifier in bold writing at the top or bottom of your roster post, that would be really helpful to us!

RP Permissions are a way to ensure your opponent doesn't take liberties with your team or nation in a way that might upset or offend you, and are entirely at your discretion. If you'd rather your opponent made absolutely no assumptions about you and your part in the game you've just played, then answer 'no' to most of the following questions. If you really don't mind and welcome others playing around with your nation, answer 'yes'. Simply copy and paste the following into your roster post, leaving either an 'N' or 'Y' after every question.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:

Choose my goalscorers Y/N
Godmod scoring events Y/N
RP injuries to my players Y/N
Godmod injuries to my players Y/N
Hand out yellow cards to my players Y/N
Hand out red cards to my players Y/N
Godmod other events Y/N

Posting a roster will earn your team a small RP bonus, as well as making it a lot easier for you and your groupmates to RP your matches.

The Crystal Empire of Equestria
National Hoofball Team - World Cup 66 Roster

Introduction
We've only just scraped the tip of this iceberg. After reaching the semifinals of the Baptism of Fire (where they were narrowly eliminated by eventual champs Welsh Cowboy) the Crystal Empire's national hoofball team is now preparing for the World Cup qualifiers. Once obscure and reclusive, the Crystal Knights have been thrust upon the international scene as perhaps the best defensive team to come out of the 53rd Baptism of Fire, earning a stunning seven clean sheets in the tournament. Likewise, the team's die-hard fans have seen their every dream exceeded by a squad which had not won a single international match until just a few short months ago.

The Crystal Knights went on a rampage against their group stage opponents, shutting each down and cruising to a pristine 5-0-0 record. Though their run came to a disappointing end in the semifinals with a shocking late goal from Welsh Cowboy relegating the Crystal Empire to the third-place playoff (which they would also lose by a slim margin), the supporters remain as loyal as always. And given the team's earlier defeats to the Equestrian States by a 10-0 combined margin, they're more than willing to endure a semifinal loss.

But regardless of the Crystal Empire's shortcomings, expectations have risen. Struggles are certainly to be expected, but at the same time, fans don't want to see the team flop out in every match. With two players on the team (Amberlocks and Arctic Lily) earning the honor of a spot on the Baptism of Fire XI, and others drawing international attention, there is a standard that must now be upheld. The management has also made public their intention to qualify for the Cup of Harmony, and will be gunning for an invitation throughout the World Cup qualifiers. Some might find flaw in aiming low, but realistically there's no way for the Crystal Knights to qualify for the Finals without a fair number of upsets over top-ranked opponents. Still, the Crystal Empire isn't a team that opponents should take lightly, being the second highest-ranked team debuting in this tournament.

Can the Crystal Knights live up to the reasonable expectations set before them? Or will they return to their losing ways from before the Baptism of Fire? These questions and many more will surely be answered in the coming months.

Team Strategy

Image

In many ways, the style of hoofball played by the Crystal Empire is similar to that of the Equestrian States, being based on speed, endurance, and the natural advantages of equine athletes. However, there are a couple of key differences between the two teams' approaches. First, the Crystal Empire is more defensive than their Equestrian counterparts, using a slightly-modified 4-4-2 formation and relying on the midfielders to provide additional defensive support if needed. This conservative strategy allows the Crystal Knights to better weather the early all-out attacks that have felled the Ponies in the past, leaving them rested and capable of staging second half surges similar to those utilized by the Equestrian States.

Furthermore, the Crystal Empire lacks the species diversity that the Equestrian States is so well known for, being over 98% inhabited by crystal ponies. While they may lack some of the natural advantages held by other sapient equines, the crystal ponies should still not be taken lightly by humanoid players. Like other ponies, crystal ponies are generally shorter than their humanoid opponents but make up for it with impressive jumping abilities (though not nearly as awe-inspiring as those of the pegasai). Finally, while sapient equines rarely "play dirty", crystal ponies take clean play to a whole new level with their wholehearted devotion to the elegance and beauty of the game.

Home Stadium
Image
Imperial Arena

Location: Crystopolis
Capacity: 69,740
Tenants: Crystopolis City

Located adjacent to the towering Crystal Palace, Imperial Arena was constructed shortly after the Crystal Empire reappeared to the north of Magical Equestria as a part of the nation's bid to host the Equestria Games. In the decade or so since the games were held, many other sports competitions have taken place in the Empire's largest stadium and several prominent local hoofball clubs have also taken up residence.

A multipurpose indoor venue, Imperial Arena's main field is encircled by a track, somewhat limiting the seating of supporters, though additional accommodations will be added to reduce the distance separating the fans from the field. Additionally, it should be noted that pickaxes, hammers, chisels, and other tools brought into the Crystal Empire will be confiscated and checked upon entry to the nation as stealing chunks of the Empire's predominantly crystal architecture is generally frowned upon by the local authorities.

RP Permissions
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my goalscorers: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes - Only that the player was injured and how they were injured, I will determine actual severity
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes - Same restrictions as above apply
Hand out yellow cards to my players: No
Hand out red cards to my players: No
Godmod other events: Yes - TG me first to clear it, since there are some things that shouldn't be done, or should be otherwise limited
Other Notes: TG me if you have any questions regarding my RPs, requests for more information on the Crystal Empire, or requests for exemptions from my RP restrictions. Opponents of the Crystal Empire may also want to consider looking at the roster of the Equestrian States for further information on how equines play hoofball (what sapient ponies call what internationally is known as football or soccer).

APOX WORLD CUP 66 ROSTER

Manager: Dravid Scott, Aged 41
Assistant Manager: Alex Fordham, Aged 28
Style: -1.8

Spiel: Well, he's had a slightly rocky start to life as the national team manager, with a 1-1-1 record in the two international friendlies and unofficial tour match against Felix to warm up for this shorter qualification campaign. He'll be hoping to do a bit better than that, as ending manager with a 4-4-4 record or thereabouts will not see Apox qualify for the finals, which is something the nation has got used to in recent years. Unsurprisingly, there are no changes to the squad from the Felix unofficial friendly, with Matthias Sindelar still named captain. Dravid Scott, your country awaits.

Notes

Saintland has a very rough style of play and very few fouls in our national league, so don't hesitate to card Sanctii players, especially if Saintland loses. In the Sanctii version of the 4-2-1-3 formation, the outside backs also function as outside midfielders. Prince Andreas is the twin brother of Prince Josephus, the goalie and captain for the Saintland ice & field hockey team and younger brother of Prince Petrus, quarterback and captain for Saintland's gridiron team. He is the team captain and also functions as the team's playmaker. Ioannes and Nicolaus Poenius are brothers, as are Silvester and Paulus Flaccus, Stephanus and Philippus Vagionius, Petrus and Isaacus Barrius and Petrus and Marcus Jucundius. Andreas Inventius is the brother of Pius Inventius, Saintland's flagbearer at the VIII Winter Olympics. Inventius is a defensive-minded midfielder. Georgius Catiotus is married to Martha Catiotus (maiden name: Pudentilla), the winning figure skater from Saintland, who won the gold medal at the VIII Winter Olympics. Stephanus Vagionius is not an especially fast player, but he is very tall and he is an exceptional finisher. Philippus Vagionius is faster than his brother and just as good at finishing. Herakles Karoki, an Acedonian national who was recently granted Sanctii citizenship, is the star striker and an all-around dominant player. Karoki led the Saintland-Acedonia Unified Team to an Olympic gold medal at the Games of the VIII Olympiad, with a dominant performance. The Poenius brothers both have world-class speed. When Saintland attacks, typically Prince Andreas has possession of the ball and the Vagionius brothers, the center midfielders and the outside backs all try to get open inside the box, but 1 or 2 of them will usually be left back to defend (never Stephanus Vagionius), except when the situation calls for an aggressive attack. Prince Andreas takes free kicks, corners and throw-ins. Karoki will handle penalties. When I have started RPing a match report, I will update my factbook to reflect what happened in the match. I will likely be saving full match report RPs for special occasions from now on.

Goalies

Tyson Richards- #1- 29
Nick DeJesus- #2- 27
Eric Matthews- #4- 17 Michael Kerraway- #4- 34

RECAP: It's been a long four years, but Tyson and Nick are still one and two and fairly young. For Michael Kerraway, this could be his last hurrah...as third-string goalie. Remember four years ago? Well, now Richards is the top goalie in Oceanside, DeJesus is probably next up, and aging Kerraway may not get much of a hurrah.

Defense

Left Back- Lee Matthewson- #66- 29 Will Luteno- #49- 25
Center Back- Cliff Palmer- #9- 27
Center Back- Ryan Jefferson- #13- 29
Right Back- Alejandro Mujica- #5- 31
Backup- Shawn Campbell- #10- 29
Backup- Jack Miller- #21- 29 Gordon Newmann- #6- 25
Backup- Joe Evans- #12- 23 Tod Beck- #98- 42

RECAP: New manager (whoops! spoiler!) Arismendy Luteno decided not to tinker with the aging defense too much, besides the obvious mistake of replacing team favorite Lee Matthewson with his own son, and the introduction of a forty-two year old in Tod Beck and young Gordon Newmann, apparently oblivious to the fact Super-Llamaland considers "6" unlucky.

MIDFIELDERS

Left-Chris May- #33- 38 Jared Mullin- #40- 25
Center- Chris Chapman- #22- 27
Attacking- CAPTAIN Trevor Duncan- #17- 29
Right- ASSISTANT CAPTAIN John Oliver- #30-35 Xavier Plaltona- #30- 26
Backup- Jared Mullin - #40- 25 Brad Lee- #80- 24
Backup- Robby Greene- #27- 27
Backup- James McGee- #0- 30 Eurgha Menghadallosillyagko- #0- 24

RECAP: Old man Oliver is smacked off the national squad, probably angering the players. Newbie Xavier Plaltona is an interesting choice, while Jared Mullin to replace injured Chris May was a no-brainer. It's an interesting note that when introducing their new twenty-four year old backup midfielder, the team wrote: "Our new midfielder, Eurgha Mengha...yagko, number zero, should provide depth at midfielder." That's new.

STRIKERS

Left- ASSISTANT CAPTAIN Evan Powell- #36- 28
Right- ASSISTANT CAPTAIN Bobby Crosby- #43- 25
Backup- Luis Alcanatra- #14- 26
Backup- Johnny Rushmore- #15- 26

RECAP: Uh oh. New manager Arismendy Luteno is having falling-outs with every striker. And the B team doesn't have the greatest striker depth. And Luteno is seriously considering booting two assistant captains off the team till the end of his horrifying regime. Why I don't like Luteno, reason #460.

STAFF

Manager- Arismendy Luteno- Age 47
Coach- Lee "Wizard" Hayes- Age 59
Coach- James Harp- Age 56
Coach- Bryce Brink- Age 54
Trainer- Jeremiah Haxaw- Age 55

I guess the world was tiring quickly of Bryan Ferguson. Arismendy Luteno installed Jeremiah Haxaw (Haxaw is pronounced "hacksaw". For a team trainer?") and then Bryce Brink to replace favorite David Russell. Brink disapproved of Ron Day's techniques, and Luteno alienated his fans forever by canning Day, the beloved coach, and replacing him with a family friend, Mr. James "I can't coach" Harp. Three down, one to go. But Luteno wouldn't seriously consider firing Lee Hayes, would he?

Style: +3
Formation: Luteno was forced into the 4-4-2 by Lee Hayes and his strikers instead of his favorite, an odd 3-6-1. If Lee Hayes is gone, the team is finished.

The States' squad is still of a high from placing in the quarterfinals of the latest Campionato Esportiva coming into the World Cup Qualifying. The team is cementing their spot in Esportivan soccer, but they still have to make their mark on the international stage. With this team's manager getting his job saved by their recent success, the players and citizens are looking forward to their first world cup qualifying that they expect to be competitive in.
In a recent poll, most citizens say they hope to be paired in a group with a fellow Esportivan nation, with most saying they want friendly rival Albaie, or Apox, who beat the States in the quarterfinals of the CE.
Most expect to finish somewhere around the middle of their qualifying group, being competitive, but not qualifying.

NEW SIDEBURN
Preferred Formation:
4-4-1-1
Secondary Formation: 3-5-2
Style Modifier: 0
Playstyle: Low on possession, but high on pressure, with fast play and short passing. Generally reliant on a stereotypical 'big guy/fast guy' strike partnership. Very physical, quite pacy.
Kit Supplier: Kirola
Nickname: The Cormorants

Despite having failed to defend their Campionato Esportiva, 332 saw an inspiring performance from a very average-looking U-21 side under Darryl Boyden. It's restored some of Ramsey's faith in youth. While veterans like Portia Thrift, Lucia Oakwood and Gerhard Thunder still dominate the side, it's time for the likes of Brandon, Crowley and Belfast to be properly blooded. The squad itself has the most players in foreign clubs ever picked; eleven players forming a narrow minority, but with the national league stronger than ever their talents can't be underestimated. The Cormorants will consider themselves dark horses; failing entry to the World Cup itself, they'll settle for a solid shot at the Cup of Harmony.

New Sideburn's home stadium, the Farham Arena, fits 120,000 (40,000 standing); situated in central Sabrefell, it's a major landmark of the city, and while it belongs to no club it hosts cup finals and national matches. Named after Joan Farham, the first professional female player in the New Sideburn leagues, it has a museum that's free to enter outside of match hours... but in those precious matches, it becomes sacred ground.

Overall Record
54 wins - 11 draws - 18 losses
154 scored - 97 conceded

Honours
Champions of the 51st Baptism of Fire, Campionato Esportiva VI and Market Cup VI.

First Team
ImageImage
4-4-1-1 used most commonly; 3-5-2 used whenever necessary to control midfield at the cost of the wings, will probably only be started with against a significantly stronger team with a five-man midfield.

My opponent MAY
Choose my goalscorers (Oakwood takes penalties, corners and direct free-kicks)
RP injuries to my players (maximum one, and I'll determine the exact severity)
Hand out yellow and red cards to my players (maximum one red, cautions within reason)

My opponent MAY NOT

Godmod injuries
Godmod other events

Penalty Order (First 10)
1. Lucia Oakwood
2. Darren Parrett
3. Michael Brandon
4. Dale Brightley
5. Cathy Stokes
6. Gerhard Thunder
7. Anna Shrike
8. Barry Kearney
9. Gareth Crowley
10. James Yorke

Gethin RAMSEY - 57
Manager

Gethin Ramsey is so old-school he's practically jurassic. Moreover, he'd take that as a compliment. He's been here since before NSB even joined the WCC, guiding them to trophy after trophy, and generally overcoming doubts and fears by shouting and strongarming his fractious band into submission. He's a legendary figure for the country, however, and the combination of fear, awe and respect he inspires in his lads has inspired them to many feats of glory and strength.

Escher SPEARE - 40
Assistant Manager

Unbelievably, Speare's belief in 'safermetrics' as the new hope of football has dimmed somewhat with time, as morale, emotion and sheer luck throw constant spanners in her arithmetic. She still believes they can provide a measure of insight, however. Moreover, she's a superb administrator, and one of the very few people capable of holding their own in an argument with Gethin Ramsey.

Evan PARDEW - 43
Chaplain

Ramsey has, allegedly for morale, taken along a veritable entourage. The more cynical among the squad (pretty much all of them) believe this is just an elaborate excuse to bring along his wife. The most surprising addition is that of a chaplain for the squad, which seems more than a little out of place given just how lapsed most Sideburnese Catholics are... but Pardew seems to ring with a genuine belief in his cause. Who knows? It just might pay off.
1 - Portia THRIFT (vc) - 37 - Riverside (SAU)
71 caps, 26 clean sheets

Thrift's expertise lies in her positioning and handling; she doesn't have the reflexes she used to, but she's still got what it takes to be the last line of defence for the team. The veteran 37-year old has been a rock in defence since New Sideburn's Baptism of Fire, and has stated her ambition is to lead the side into the World Cup.

12 - Kieron RIORDAN - 27 - Wrexton FC (APX)
Uncapped

One of the new generation of Sideburnese players to try their luck abroad, Riordan's set his hopes high; ten years younger than Portia Thrift, he hopes to become her successor. Riordan's distribution is outstanding, his acrobatics remarkable and his unflappable attitude makes him stern under pressure.

20 - Paolo CREWE - 31 - Maximum City
1 cap, 1 clean sheet

A loyalist to the old league, Crewe's made it extremely clear where his loyalties lie. He truly believes in the Premiership's strength, and is the backbone of a powerful Maximum City squad. His reliability and composure are his primary assets.
2 - Anna SHRIKE - 28 - Mâ Âlâmëómë (FFD)
Right-back
75 caps, 2 goals

While age is doing no favours to an already unfit player, Shrike's still the go-to right wingback for the squad. While she has been criticised for having little defensive nous, nobody can doubt her sheer ability to bring the ball forward and threaten the opposition.

3 - James YORKE - 24 - Sabrefell Moths
Centre-back
38 caps, 0 goals

Young and talented, Yorke's arrival in the squad was a surprise when it first occurred; now he seems a fixture of the team. Yorke is level-headed and will rarely give away fouls, and has remarkable tactical attentiveness; he'll never be caught off-guard, and will rarely be left without a plan of action.

4 - Cathy STOKES - 25 - AFC Treason
Left-back
49 caps, 1 goal

Part of a record-beating Treason squad that made it further than any Sideburnese club had gone before, it's no surprise to see Stokes retain her foothold in the national side. She's possessed of near-infinite stamina and has a workrate to match, never giving up even on seemingly lost causes.

5 - Rook HARM - 37 - Egloskerry (APX)
Centre-back
62 caps, 1 goal

Rook 'National Fucking Treasure' Harm was a nightclub bouncer in his youth and has become only more violent since. While he loosened up four years ago with the aid of therapy, reckless tackling and giving away three penalties in one cycle lead to Gethin Ramsey swearing a highly publicised oath never to select Rook Harm again. He has broken this twice. But when it comes down to it, sometimes you just need a hard man in the back of your line, and they don't come much harder than Harm.

17 - Hadrian BELFAST - 21 - Sabrefell Athletic
Centre-back
Uncapped

Belfast has trained under the wing of Lukas Strongnesse himself, and aims to be Athletic's next truly great centre-back. With the kind of pace and talent he has, it's no surprise Ramsey and Speare have plans for him; the young 21-year old is set to start in defence.

19 - James SLEET - 23 - AC Tallin (VAL)
Right-back
Uncapped

Young, lean and handsome, the platinum blond 'Snowy' Sleet is another of the new breed; young, quick and playing abroad. A graduate of the much-acclaimed Eastflood academy, Sleet's still developing his attacking play but shuts down wingers with ease; a complementary figure to the wild Anna Shrike. Also of note, Sleet is the first male full-back to be selected for a full NSB WCC squad.

23 - Leila CORVETTE - 26 - Sabrefell Moths
Left-back
46 caps, 0 goals

Though favoured in the WC64 days, Corvette's battle for a starting spot has slowly become a losing one. Still, the chain-smoking wingback makes up for her lack of endurance with pace and intelligence, specialising in making incisive, mazy runs deep into the enemy half.
6 - Lucia OAKWOOD (c) - 33 - Crisisbless
Defensive Midfielder
82 caps, 8 goals

New Sideburn's captain, Lucia Oakwood was present for the first eighty WCC games the nation fought in. She's a resilient, intelligent holding midfielder, relentless in pursuit. Though neither speed nor strength are her forte, she has positioning bordering on the uncanny, and her off-the-ball movement its unparalleled... but more importantly than that, she's a strong personality that the rest of the squad respects.

8 - Darren PARRETT - 23 - Alouette Jonquiere (SIC)
Right Midfielder
13 caps, 1 goal

Young and skilled, Darren Parrett's erratic, jinking runs down the wing have become his trademark. He's slowly evolved into a player most comfortable with short, incisive passes snapping into the box at waist-level, but he's able to just smack the ball at Gerhard Thunder's face when he has to. Not bad with a long shot, either.

10 - Dale BRIGHTLEY - 26 - Basin Plain (UGO)
Attacking Midfielder
54 caps, 17 goals

New Sideburn's greatest talent, as his club attests to. He was signed curiously in BoF51, but since then it's started to make all too much sense; fast, tough and hard, utterly tireless and, while unselfish, knows when he just has to go for it himself. Definitely the most-improved player in the team.

11 - Cheney ROSEWOOD - 30 - Sabrefell Moths
Left Midfielder
77 caps, 14 goals

Arrogant and ruthless in attack, but strangely charismatic. Cheney Rosewood was perhaps the greatest talent of the BoF51 champions... but time has seemed to rather pass him by. Now thirty and plying his trade with a powerful but inconsistent Sabrefell Moths side, Rosewood definitely knows what he needs to do on the pitch, but can his body keep up?

13 - Michael BRANDON - 23 - Directus (EUR)
Central Midfielder
2 caps, 0 goals

A quiet, intensely professional man, Brandon's unusual for a Sideburnese. His introverted, calm appearance and entirely mercenary attitude to the sport belies a striking ability to create play from deep in midfield. One of the most talented players in the squad, Brandon's youth has kept him, perhaps wrongly, from the starting squad earlier... but with these remarkable club successes, there's no doubt his time has come.

14 - Olenna DAYTONA - 28 - Maximum City
Central Midfielder
Uncapped

Daytona's career never really blossomed until she moved to the Smiths, transforming a rather average midfield into one capable of holding up the centre of the pitch effectively, despite playing a 5-3-2. A straightforward holding midfielder for the most part, but she's expert at free kicks, moderate-to-long passes and distant, powerful shots.

16 - Gareth CROWLEY - 23 - Abingdon Celtic (TLI)
Left Midfielder
3 caps, 0 goals

Gareth Crowley now has a strong, internationally recognised club to back his bid for a starting place, a battle he looks to be winning. Despite his status as one of the new breed among the squad, he's very much the classic mould for a Sideburnese winger; very fast, a thunderous left foot and no pushover physically.

18 - Karelline CHARMWELL - 28 - Sabrefell Athletic
Attacking Midfielder
32 caps, 7 goals

Amidst the call-ups of players like Crowley, Brandon and Riordan, it bucks the trend, but is perhaps not unexpected, for Karelline Charmwell, a BoF51 veteran playing for an NSFA club, to make the team. But Charmwell was with an Athletic club that won the double this year, a title that means significantly more than ever now that New Sideburn's UICA rank is damn respectable nowadays. Charmwell's unselfish, perhaps to a fault, but her ability to create chances for others more suited to finish them is remarkable.

22 - Catheline HARPER - 25 - Maximum Rovers
Right Midfielder
Uncapped

Harper came seemingly out of nowhere to arrive unheralded in 331... and single-handedly dragged the Maximum Rovers to their greatest-ever finish. While the club did merely average this season, she's still the shining light of the squad, thanks to tireless stamina and an admirable workrate both in attack and defence... some have suggested she might be closer to a right-back than Shrike.
7 - Gerhard THUNDER - 31 - Astograth University (ASG)
Striker
75 caps, 36 goals

New Sideburn's top scorer, bearer of the number 7 since the Baptism of Fire, target man extraordinaire and all-around Big Lad. 6'6", 211 lbs and three Iron Boots to his name, Thunder's a towering presence on the penalty area, and intimidating for any defender to deal with; moreover, he's skilled with the ball and strong with his head and his feet - he's excellent defensively, too, putting pressure on defenders in possession. The complete straightforward target man.

9 - Barry KEARNEY - 31 - Royalwich (SAU)
Striker
36 caps, 17 goals

Age has not dulled Kearney's raw pace in the slightest; still a fast, physical centre-forward, good all-round but with little tactical nous. While not a natural goal-poacher, he excels at rushing into the path of the ball and smashing it at the goalmouth with significant power.

15 - Tara LOCKDOWN - 28 - AFC Treason
Striker
10 caps, 3 goals

Lockdown's never really been able to get into the national first team, but she's certainly got what it takes; her club performances prove that, including an Iron Boot in 331. Treason's offensive presence owes much to her ball control and strength, a physicality belying her rangy, youthful frame. Notable for her short, blue-sprayed hair; few people remember her natural colour. We believe it to be sandy blonde.

21 - Rook CATHAR - 21 - Sabrefell Moths
Striker
Uncapped

Another U-21 player, Cathar was a leading presence in that team, and has already muscled his way to prominence in a fractious and confused Sabrefell Moths squad. He finds himself in the strange position of here being in the same squad as the man he was groomed specifically to replace; Moths legend Gerhard Thunder.

1 - Portia Thrift (Riverside, SAU)
12 - Kieron Riordan (Wrexton FC, APX)
20 - Paolo Crewe (Maximum City)

DEFENDERS
2 - Anna Shrike (Mâ Âlâmëómë, FFD)
3 - James Yorke (Sabrefell Moths)
4 - Cathy Stokes (AFC Treason)
5 - Rook Harm (Egloskerry, APX)
17 - Hadrian Belfast (Sabrefell Athletic)
19 - James Sleet (AC Tallin, VAL)
23 - Leila Corvette (Sabrefell Moths)

MIDFIELDERS
6 - Lucia Oakwood (Crisisbless)
8 - Darren Parrett (Alouette Jonquiere, SIC)
10 - Dale Brightley (Basin Plain, UGO)
11 - Cheney Rosewood (Sabrefell Moths)

14 - Olenna Daytona (Maximum City)
16 - Gareth Crowley (Abingdon Celtic, TLI)
18 - Karelline Charmwell (Sabrefell Athletic)

Original nation behind Nephara. New Sideburn now symbolises an ideal, rather than a nation.

Coming off their recent third-place finish in the eight-team Jeremy Jaffacake Jamboree, including a draw with host and top-ranked Audioslavia and a win over other host and not-so-top-ranked The Inevitable Syndicate, the Falcons are hoping to bring their plethora of talent (many NT players already being stars all around the world for their domestic clubs) to fruition and earn a ticket (back) to Audioslavia. Or to The Inevitable Syndicate, we suppose. But hopefully not the latter; they're surrounded by all sorts of unfavorable neighbors, who know neither the concept of personal space nor national sovereignty.

Nickname: The Falcons
Manager: David Radic, former assistant-manager of Audioslavia
Formation: 3-4-2-1
Style: +0.5 (Though, for RP Purposes, can show shades of their old +2.5)

Notes

The Federation of Free Republics (FFR) is a federation of Republics with a weak national government (the "Federation Government") that has numerous checks and balances. The Republics, each of which has its own government, are relatively independent, although they are subject to the Federation Constitution and its numerous restrictions on what government can do. Most important among them is the cap on taxation, which makes it unconstitutional for government (meaning all governments in the FFR) to take more than 10% combined of anybody's income in taxes, effectively limiting the government. They are the nearest neighbor to Saintland, although that tiny island nation is over a thousand miles to the north of the northern-most Republic's northern border, and most Republicans actually tend to consider progressives worse than religious fanatics, even if both ideologies are considered extreme and contrary to Republicanism. This is the same team the FFR sent to last year's Di Bradini Cup and also to last year's World Cup and Cup of Harmony. The players on this team would not be considered the best players in the FFR or even the best U-21 players in the FFR. Republican athletes tend to have massive egos and they aren't interested in playing for their country. This team was the idea of Rule Theriault, a failed former manager who had led a team that was expected to contend for the league title to relegation. Theriault failed as manager at Petrograd United because the veteran players on that team, with their giant egos, did not respect their manager or his approach to the game. Theriault clashed with players because he emphasizes a team-first style of play and an intense practice schedule. To rebuild his reputation, he decided to work with younger players that would take instruction and was able to get a number of talented young players, even if most of the country's top prospects turned him down. This team made it to the finals of the Di Bradini Cup last year, before falling short against the Equestrian States. Despite requests from a number of professional players to be chosen for the national side, Theriault chose not to make any changes to his squad for the Baptism of Fire to avoid any risk of weakening team chemistry. Despite finishing 17th at the BoF and failing to qualify for the World Cup, Theriault once again chose not to make any changes to his side for the Cup of Harmony. The team would lose their first 2 matches at the CoH to New Sideburn and Filopines before picking up upsets against Jeru FC and Falcus. There are no large differences in ability between the individual players on this team. Backups can see playing time and Theriault will probably bench his starters if he feels the game is meaningless. Bolton is the team's best player, but he isn't much better than the other strikers. The Free Republics returned to the DBC and won all 7 of their matches, becoming the Di Bradini Cup champions. Assistant Manager Massimiliano Abdullahi was not at this year's DBC, as he coached the National Beach Soccer Team, a team composed entirely of U-15 players, in the Beach Cup. The U-15 side went 4-6 in the Beach Cup and went on to be eliminated after the group stage of the U-15 World Cup.

In case you are wondering, Nova Hellstrom no longer recaps this team's matches. She was re-assigned by Sporting World after writing an article about how adbots are great when she was supposed to write a match recap of a World Cup qualifier during last year's World Cup. Sporting World has yet to hire a replacement.

Manager: Spencer Cooney, 58 years old. First time managing the national team. He brings a style change to Silverian soccer, trying to buck the trend of the last World Cup Qualifying failures that Silver Beach has had. Manager Cooney has brought a style of speed, encouraging his players to play the ball up the wings to his speedy wingers and cross it in, which helps when the starting central striker is 6'6, and his backup Steadman is 6'3, and they are both over 200 pounds. The strikers and wingers are the main goalscorers, though the midfielders sometimes score a rebound or free kick goal here and there.

Striker Coach: Jacob Jenkins, 41 years old, former captain of the national team
Midfield Coach: Devon Long, 47 years old.
Defender Coach: Joseph Givens, 43 years old, former defender on the national team.

After finishing third in the recent Under-15 World Cup, in which they emphatically trashed current World Cup Winners Wight 5-0 in the third place play-off, hopes are high for another performance much like that one. The Rampant Walrus finished sixth in their World Cup Qualifying Group last time round, but then it was their debut performance. Of the successful U-15 squad, only one has made it into Norrie Stewart's 25 strong World Cup team - Doran Milosevici, the stalwart centre-back now of Blau-Weiss Pallstadt in Buyan, will be hoping to make a difference.

Manager
Vamariiel Falavir (F) ~
Age: 1093
Falvir's contributions to Vanorian football and the rise of Ibini FC under her management have landed her the spot as the manager of the national team. She becomes the first Vyintanese to ever hold the office and to many is seen that anything is possible for anyone residing within the commonwealth. Tactically, she prefers a possessive game with probing from wingers and the midfielders, which suits the player strengths of Valanora, with a history of superb attacking midfielders. Her appointments brings a lot of excitement back to Vanorian football and could be a major cultural moment for the entire commonwealth.

Assistant Manager
Polennoion Mitheththor
Age: 1507
Polennoion is an odd choice to be Falavir's right hand man, considering that his squads have never done more than what is expected of them. Granted that being the manager of AC Valanari has never been an easy challenge for him, but there were other options with a better pedigree to choose from. One thing going for him is that Valanari sides have always been tough to break down and a hard team to beat, fighting for points till the last whistle. Perhaps this discipline and desire is what has won him the job over more qualified options.

Keeper

Draugwë Nororon, Mar Sara FC
Age - 797
Sex - M
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 188 lbs
While not the long term replacement for Dart, Nororon provides a solid keeper in net. Big and confident in net, Nororon is pure shot blocker with a great command of his box.

Defenders

2 Vanacauion Haelinde, Raynor City United
Age - 677
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 168 lbs
A versatile defender who is quick for his size and good with his feet. Can be an attacking threat not only on set piece situations but also deliver good through balls and crosses when he does venture forth.

3 Aearost Tinueme, Raynor City United
Age - 604
Sex - M
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 166 lbs
With the failures of the backline the past few editions, the new managerial staff decided that pairing Haelinde with his club teammate on the national team seemed the best idea. Tinueme unlike Haelinde is a stay at home centerback, looking to disrupt opponents play with a combination of pace, strength and solid positioning. He is a manger's dream of a centerback.

4 Berdhiion Narbrinsyr, Wexax United
Age - 809
Sex - M
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 162 lbs
Narbinsry is a bit of a hybrid defender, capable of playing on the wing or in the middle or even as a pinch midfielder if the time calls for it. Not particularly strong in the air, but an exceptional work rate and pace gets him the nod in the refashioned backline over his competitors.

Midfield

21 Espy va Drake, Yuba United (Paripana)
Age: 743
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 159 lbs
After becoming a folklore hero for the lower class of the world, va Drake has made himself one of the living legends of the game after help leading the side to a title in World Cup 53. He has traveled far and wide while plying his trade, donning kits for no less than four countries clubs, and finally returned him when he signed with United before last season. Seen as the driving force in the middle of the park alongside Hawk, it is up to the opposition to try and figure out how to deal with the brilliance the winger and his other attackers have rather than them to create magic.

6 Aintôrthea Durosa, Royal Rumiatzi (Astograth)
Age - 752
Sex - F
Height: 5"10"
Weight: 144 lbs
Durosa is one of those players that can play just about any position, as her skill set is vast and adequate in multiple areas. She has done exceptionally well in her CMSC seasons, nabbing goals and assists with regularity and continued with her transfer to the Cafundeu league yet to be seen how the shift to Astograth will effect her game however. Her good knowledge of va Drake's typical playing patterns has made the two to be a devastating pair for the opposition to contain.

14 Laborious Hawk, Urbizania Wanderers (Astograth)
Age - 707
Sex -M
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 213 lbs
Words do not even begin to define his talent, his talent defines words. He was awarded one of the spots that the Vanorians have in the World Cup Hall of Fame, with it being very well deserved, as he has and continues to earn everything he has been given every single day.

8 Rochenion Falaval, Club ESF
Age - 752
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 177 lbs
The achor at Club ESF for over a decade now, Falaval looks to succeed where Neltanta struggled. Not nearly the same attacking threat as Neltanta, Falaval is more of a creative holding midfielder. Not remarkedably quick, Falaval is better a keeping solid positioning.

7 Faeron Soldarian, Raynor City United
Age - 621
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 163 lbs
Soldarian continues to live in the shadow of more well known players both on the national team and with his club. Despite this, Soldarian is seen by all on the squad as the emotional leader and the linchpin the in the middle that allows the more attacking minded midfielders being allowed to play their game.

Strikers

9 Allandren Fresco, Ibini FC
Age - 496
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 167 lbs
Fresco will once again have to learn to play off a new strike partner with Gwaval finally being given the opportunity. By now Fresco is a known commodity, strong in the air with a pretty decent shot, the vision to create when asked upon. With Gwaval playing a more poacher role, look for Fresco to link up the play or hold the possession in the attacking third more often.

10 Medtôrwen Gwaval, Club ESF ~
Age - 749
Sex - F
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 147 lbs
Gwaval is a speedy striker who has the uncanny ability to turn up at the right place at the right time. She is a real poacher of goals and despite sometimes disappearing for large portions of the match, can turn it on for a moment a brilliance that rescue results for her side.

Subs

The human members of the team play as, well, humans. Using feet, head, etc. I don't need to explain this to you.

The pteronurian players play 'football' a little differently. Generally, a pteronurian player will use their head more than any other part of their body especially for dribbling and then their tail for more powerful passes and shots. Due to the nature of this style of play, helmets have been allocated to minimise injuries. The pteronurians wear no other kit as, as they put it, they are not as prudish as their human counterparts. They will probably never use their paws. Despite being capable of standing and walking bipedally, they rarely do and scamper around in a way akin to a ferret.

The Lymryk Isles play a quick, short passing game. Working their way towards the opponents goal with slow build-up play, occasionally interspersed with a long ball counter-attack. The pteronurians being surprisingly nippy on land when they choose to be. From corners or other such set-pieces, expect crosses at difficult heights for humans. As your defender (assuming they're human ... ) tries to decide whether to head the ball or get their leg up high, a springing pteronurian will have probably already bounded through and headed goal-ward.

Also, do not be alarmed should you find a semi-chewed fish outside your changing room, or find yourself being presented one. This is a gesture of friendship and goodwill amongst pteronurians. However, feel free to freak out should one of our human players exhibit this behaviour.

Feel free to TG me with any queries regarding the strange and wonderful inhabitants of the Lymryk Isles.

RP Permissions and other titbits:
No deaths or serious injuries please without at least a TG first. Anything else is fair game.

Home Stadium:
The Lymryk Isles home stadium is the FSA in Aflyannafleeinnaflu, The stadium is a modest affair with a ridiculous name. First, a little history about the city. Aflyannafleeinnaflu's origins were that of a humans-only city, populated by the humans who opposed the Homo-Ptero Equality Act of Tuesday (date and time are an ambiguous affair in the Lymryks. Beyond what day of the week it is, few people care about specifics). One of the cultural exports they brought with them was sport and the city quickly grew to the country's sporting capital. This only served to encourage young otters seeking a career in this field. Many of them braved the outright racism to compete alongside the best sportsmen and women in the Lymryks, to prove themselves or outperform their human counterparts. This competitive air only further fueled the sporting scene and soon the 'humans-only' city was beginning to be swamped by aspiring otters. In a feeble attempt to dissuade more refugees, the city was renamed to, the outrageous,
Aflyannafleeinnafluwertrappedohwotcudthaydoosedtheflylettusfleesedthefleelettusflysothayfluthruaflorintheflu.

This is still the city's official name as unfortunately for the humans, the otters loved the new quirky name much better than the old name of Shyton. Quickly, the sheer nightmare this action created was realised but the name stuck. Today, it is commonly abbreviated to Aflyannafleeinnaflu but some places keep the full version. Usually places that had paid a small fortune on sign printing, such as the FSA, or to give it it's proper name,
Football Stadium of Aflyannafleeinnafluwertrappedohwotcudthaydoosedtheflylettusfleesedthefleelettusflysothayfluthruaflorintheflu

The ground seats a modest 2,500 with standing room for another c.2,000. If you're planning to bring a large group of fans to any games in here, expect a moderate degree of chaos.

No much surprises here, as almost all of the starters, save for Joed Pasamonte, were included in the last Cup of Harmony in Cassadaigua and the Equestrian States. Let your creativity run, except for some restrictions:
NO career ending injuries/deaths
NO red cards exceeding 2 cards greater than your team
NO yellow cards exceeding 4 cards greater than your team
Other matters, go crazy.

OTHER NOTES (NOTE: This is strictly IC.)
Fans. Football hooliganism is partly a problem in Sangti. With riots recently reported in the matches against German Spanish Empire and The Sovan Antithesis, the FA Sangti is trying to find a way to reduce hooliganism by staging national team matches only at the El Dictator. Also, fans will treat the fans of the following nations with hostility, some for having a rivalry and some because they eliminated Sangti in any circumstance (and sometimes in non-football sports): German Spanish Empire, Gaveo, Felix, Aels, The Sovan Antithesis, Sondstead, Jeruselem, Saintland, The Licentian Isles. However level of security on matches with any of these nations will be raised to ensure the safety of visiting fans.

Weather. Tropical storms have been occurring at Southern Sangti, but not at the northern and central areas. So if you are a pony nation, do not fret. Ciudad Sangti is located at the center of the nation.

Transportation. Charter flights to Ciudad Sangti will be accepted if it is reserved two weeks before Sangti's home matches against the concerned nation. The nation uses Imelda Marcos International Airport in Zalesgon, northwest of the capital to accommodate international flights, and its runways can accommodate even the largest aircraft, so no worries for nations going to Sangti.

Accommodation. Hotels are available in Ciudad Sangti. Ranging from 10 to 10000 Sangs (NS$ 8 to 8000), one can book reservations in a hotel of his choice. The visiting team will be accommodated free of charge in Hotelier Sangti, the area's number one hotel, with expenses paid by the FAS.

Laws. There are some laws that restrict foreigners' movements inside Sangti. Any foreigner attacking a Sangtian will be deported back to his/her country three days after investigations end. If fans of the opposing side have been adjudged to initiate an attack in a riot, then the FAS reserves the right to ban fans from entering Sangtian territory. Other laws must also be observed.

After the Manggugubat of Alitaba entered the Baptism of Fire Tournament in Astograth and United Gordonopia where they were eliminated in the Round of 16, they will try to qualify for the World Cup 66. They will be spearheaded by Ovid Tisang, former manager of Gabelona in the LFS Primera Liga. After losing the first three matches of the Copa Rushmori, Alitaba beat Olastor 2-0 and then defeated Karditan 2-1 to place 20th in the Casaran stage of the tournament, although that was not enough to progress to the round of 16. However, they made the Round of 16 of the Market Cup, where they lost to Saugeais B team in extra time.

Style Modifier: -4.41
Tisang, aged 54, will employ a squad that is rich in containing its opponents. They will make defense a top priority. They may field a 4-4-2, switching to a defensive 4-5-1 formation, with Hinagpis as solo striker.

Manager: Morten Rasmussen, 58
Record in Charge: P 66, W 53, D 7, L 6, GF 116, GA 40, GD +76, WP 80%
He nearly did it. He so nearly did it. And then he did it. No, not that it. The other it. Yeah, that. With the Terns stagnating and fresh blood needed, former FC Axel Heiburg boss Morten Rasmussen took over at the helm of the Terns, and after building on solid foundations he did what no other Terns manager has done and reached the World Cup final. What's more, he did so having gone unbeaten in qualifying and in the finals themselves. He came so close, with the Terns being beaten by Wight *spits* and a rather inspired Israel Falcon in the final - coming so close to an entirely unbeaten tournament but claiming the coveted title of number one ranked team in the Multiverse as they did so. They'd have preferred the trophy, mind.

Rasmussen then had the duty of picking the Terns up and dusting them off, giving them the time and space to build their confidence and casually winning the Copa Rushmori for a record third time in the process; even beating Sargossa *spits* in the final, which was fun. With a keen eye for developing young talent and playing attractive football inherited from his time at Axel Heiburg with the excellent Haapa-Mechelin academy backing him up, it is no surprise to see Rasmussen continue to build youngsters into his side and mix them up neatly with experience. Having never lost a game in qualifying yet, Rasmussen will likely set his side up cautiously at first as he defends that enviable record, despite the wealth of attacking talent he has at his disposal - not least amongst which is Polarian and Jan Mayen football legend Alexsandr van Sorensen, who will be retiring from international football at the end of this cycle in whatever circumstances that may be for the Terns. Hopes are cautiously high however that they will send him out in style, with the quiet belief around the camp being that this twenty-three is capable of going one better than last time around, giving Rasmussen, van Sorensen, and the people of the Federation what they really want - the World Cup trophy.

Assistant Manager: Steffan Pekarik, 46
Steffan Pekarik is a player who knows what it takes to succeed. Holding 141 caps for the Terns and appearing for East Franz Athletic and KagPaz club Urajbina, he later joined Axel Heiburg and was their first ever title lifting captain in his last ever season of professional playing, all under Morten Rasmussen's guidance. He then went straight into the coaching set-up at the Argonauts and was the assistant manager by the time Jorgen Hauge lifted the title three seasons later. Upon Rasmussen's job offer at the Terns, Pekarik was swiftly whisked across as well, and it is thought that the inspirational and dynamic former left-back with the talent for man-management is being trained and prepared for a crack at a big management job himself in the future.

PLAYERS:
#1 - GK - Iulian Kirilaunen - Age 24 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls Image - 26 Caps
Kirilaunen was handed the number one jersey at Surtsey a while ago now, repaying the confidence shown in him almost immediately by producing some outstanding performances to help the Gulls exceed all expectations. Twenty-six years old is very young for a goalkeeper who appears to represent his national team as the number one with as much calmness and authority as he does, but you tend to forget this during the match as your eyes are instead drawn to his constantly good positioning and organisation of his back four. Despite his closest rival for the number one jersey winning the Champions' Cup, Iulian still holds onto it. There's a good reason for this, and his speed off his line when acting as a sweeper-keeper will no doubt save the day on the rare occasions the speedy and mobile but admittedly ageing defence in front of him gets caught flat-footed.

#2 - DR - Dima Petersen - Age 33 -Image Ituraitz FC (ASG) Image - 77 Caps, 3 Assists, 2 Goals
Rasmussen originally raised a few eyebrows amongst his fellow coaches by re-calling Ituraitz defender Petersen, but he had made a pledge to choose players based on form rather than reputation, and so Petersen came back. Hesjedal replaced the Ituraitz captain when he voluntarily retired from international football, but his barnstorming run captaining Ituraitz to international trophy after international trophy combined with Hesjedal's shaky performance at the Copa means Rasmussen begged Dima to return. He certainly proved why he is so admired at the last World Cup, and so this classy right-back and natural leader will return to strut his stuff for the national team, possibly for the last time.

#3 - DC - Julius Oyen-Spekke - Age 33 -Image East Franz Athletic Image - 131 Caps, 8 Assists, 7 Goals
Quietly putting in match-winning performances isn't easy in the Federation League, where every move is scrutinised and caught on camera, but playing for a club outside the big four helped. Oyen-Spekke is a defender upon whose shoulders many hopes rested when his promotion to the starting XI was once seen as something of a risk, however daft that may sound now. He hasn't looked back since, and following disappointing results in the league for Resolute Storm he moved for big money to East Franz Athletic and has been one of the best defenders in the country ever since. His agility and ability in the air is almost unmatched even at thirty-three, and for sheer athleticism he'll be hard to beat even in his advancing years. With the retirement of Torre Urfstadt, Oyen-Spekke is now the experienced head in this defence, and he'll be called upon to lead by example. Has neither confirmed nor denied that he will retire from international football at the end of this cycle.

#4 - David Wien - Age 28 - Image Jan Mayen Islanders Image - 45 Caps, 1 Assist, 3 Goals
Thanks to Jan Mayen Islanders' partnership with Liventian team Caernville Seahawks, Wien had already accumulated a significant amount of first team experience by the time he broke into the Jan Mayen first team; experience that also set him up well as he moved from the u-21s side into the full international side and then the starting line-up. His leadership and positional knowledge is already at an advanced stage, and his popularity with the other players in the side is noticeable to all. Pencilled in by some in the media as a possible future captain of both club and country, he walks the fine line between being popular and being a leader like an expert, something he exhibited to great effect as Jan Mayen unexpectedly lifted the last Divisjon One title.

#5 - DL - Kohev Küngas-Vaga - Age 28 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 110 Caps, 20 Assists, 10 Goals - VICE-CAPTAIN
Impressed as the u-21s captain despite going out in the group stages of the DBC under his watch, this defender is well known and trusted by the management team and he will almost certainly take the armband next cycle in the absence of Alexsandr van Sorensen. Kohev is a combative and battling left-back, though he is a talented centre back and defensive midfielder as well, and this enthusiasm and adaptability is something that Rasmussen will be able to make good use of. Moving to the first team as a result of Edvar Folke's previous hamstring tear, his athleticism was called upon to offer support and attacks from down the left side, and he later ousted the now internationally-retired SK defender from the starting XI entirely. One of the youngest players to ever move past a hundred caps for his country, he found the final defeat to Wight *spits* particularly hard to take and he will be working hard to try and lift the trophy this time around as one of the most impressive members of a quality and highly experienced back four.

#6 -DMC - Eyvindur Sudesval - Age 32 -Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 87 Caps, 4 Assists, 6 Goals
Another fan-favourite who has captained the u-21s in the past, Sudesval came to the senior side with a wealth of experience already in his back pocket, and his performances at defensive midfielder have more than held up to the absence of Jorgen Hauge since. Confident in his own abilities, he lets his football do the talking, and this quiet individual can often be seen practising alone if left to his own devices. Strong in the air and full of vitality, his fitness levels are astonishing: he is able to run end to end for 120 minutes if needed to, which therefore makes him a perfect player for the Pythagorean system. Boasts a powerful thunderbolt of a shot as well as the ability to control and dictate a match, which is exactly what he did as SK won the Champions' Cup in Farfadillis. He's a pro all-round defensive midfielder, which is exactly why SK brought him back from Saugeais in an effort to fix their lack of weight in the middle of the park in the first place. A late bloomer, perhaps, and another of the older players over whose international futures lie question marks, but what a bloom.

#7 - MC - Jean-Eric Villeneuve - Age 27 - Image Northbrook Diamonds FK Image - 71 Caps, 30 Assists, 10 Goals
Moving back to Northbrook from Cap Nordique in Cotdelapoms, Villeneuve is a creative attacking midfielder in the same mould as Lepka and Demarchelier and, like the latter, he hails from the Rochefroides community of Ellismare. Fluent in five languages, he is incredibly intelligent as far as footballers go, and his range of passing and vision on the pitch is evidence of this. Not the fastest player to have ever hit the turf, he lets the football do all the hard work for him, which can lead to his apparent lack of effort being an easy target for disgruntled fans is results aren't going so well. Fortunately, with Jean-Eric in the side, this is rarely the case, and with the help of Rasmussen and Pekarik's encouragement, even the pace and athleticism is still improving. Also, how is he still only twenty-seven? He's at the height of his game right now, and that's potentially terrifying for the opposition.

#8 - MC - Marten Cornelius - Age 31 - Image FC Axel Heiburg Image - 85 Caps, 38 Assists, 11 Goals
Cornelius came into the squad having been an inspiring presence for the u-21s in the past, and some impressive game-changing performances for Axel Heiburg underlined his quality as a key member of their Champions' Cup title-winning side. Two assists in his first five caps for the Terns gave glimpses of a fine midfielder with excellent vision, and he's only gone on to underline that promise since. Despite playing a more attacking role for Axel Heiburg, we see him here in the traditionally 'box-to-box' slot in the Pythagorean midfield plan. His inspirational midfield performance against Yuba United in the final of the Champions' Cup, pinging passes left right and centre as the Silver-Blues had no answer to his output, showed us that he's perhaps the closest thing we've got to Alexsandr van Sorensen's driving midfield creativity, and as one of the experienced senior members of this side now, he will be needed to provide some leadership as well as support for the ageing van Sorensen.

#9 - ST - Gustaf Kolehmainen - Age 26 - Image FC1. Surtsey Island Gulls Image - 29 Caps, 3 Assists, 16 Goals
With a vicious right boot and a desire to succeed, Gustaf Kolehmainen is perhaps the player upon whom Surtsey have built their recent success. Has scored sixteen goals for the Terns so far, and has been widely lauded for his performances in which he has utilised his broad range of talents, fitting into whatever formation he is required to do so. He can lead the line, he can support it, he can poach, he can hit screamers, he's strong, he's fast, he's two footed, he's strong in the air; he's the perfect all round striker, and he's solely focused on scoring more for the Terns. He was the inspirational presence up front time after time as the Terns won the Copa Rushmori again, and Rasmussen will be relying on the enigmatic Kolehmainen to repeat that dynamism in yet another World Cup qualifying campaign.

#10 - TQ - Alexsandr van Sorensen - Age 37 - Image Jan Mayen Islanders Image - 249 Caps, 107 Assists, 102 Goals - CAPTAIN
Shining light of the side Alexsandr is now just turning thirty-seven, and at his best he can still be devastatingly untouchable. Played a vital role for Jan Mayen before his move to Cafundéu where he played for Petardos S/A and CR Submiria, and is now back home inspiring the Ospreys to an unlikely Divisjon One title and Champions' Cup semi-final appearance, where they lost to long-time domestic rivals SK Franz Josef City. And all this after making waves with Valladar club AS Bezieres in the Super League, winning the Cygnus Cup three times in the process. Suffers from rare brain condition synaesthesia, meaning his senses get muddled up in his head, but manages to not let this affect his attractive attacking play - indeed if anything it appears to help him. Having played as a midfielder for Petardos S/A, Joachim Schwartz made full use of this natural tendency of Alexsandr's to drift backwards, and placed upon his shoulders the crucially important role of trequartista in his tactical scheme - taking up the pivotal role behind the strikers in the 'attacking triangle', and acting as a midfielder when the side has to defend. An all-time legend already, he is without a doubt the Terns' key player at this tournament and indeed he probably will be until such time as he finally retires from international football at the end of this cycle. He has already sewn the seeds of his future as well by being part of the coaching staff that saw the Jan Mayen Ospreys youth academy win the UICA Youth Cup. The Terns however have already shown that they can win without him in their record-breaking third Copa Rushmori victory, so there will definitely be life post-Van Sorensen. Just, it won't be quite the same.

#11 - ST - Felix Saarinen - Age 31 - Image East Franz Athletic Image - 76 Caps, 5 Assists, 42 Goals
With a series of hugely impressive performances in the Federation League, Saarinen's partnership up front with Kvitchenko saw the Polarian duo become one of the most feared partnerships in the league. He is fast and nimble, and yet is able to command a lone striker position if necessary, and Kvitchenko's international retirement has allowed his team-mate a continued shot in the starting line-up just as he is hitting his peak condition. A tall and dangerous figure in the box, his resilient pace late on will torment tired legs, and this will surely see him make an impact as he aims to improve his impressive goal ratio yet again. He was the outstanding goalscorer for the Terns at the last World Cup, and although he was overshadowed slightly by the explosive pursuits of Kolehmainen at the Copa Rushmori it will be interesting to see how he reacts to his Surtsene strike-partner being up front with him once again.

#12 - GK - Artemiusz Korzhanenko - Age 28 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 40 Caps
Known for his strong performances whilst with the u-21s, Korzhanenko is nigh on unbeatable when running out for the ball in the box. He also has a great record in penalty shoot outs, and you never know when that might come in handy. Whilst he has lost the number one jersey to Kirilaunen over the course of the last cycle and a half, Korzhanenko is the consummate professional, and you won't see him causing a fuss from the bench. A great calming presence to have in the locker room, and now a Champions' Cup winner too.

#13 - GK - Alexis Sand - Age 26 - Image Iturributa United (ITB) Image - 5 Caps
Just as he was making his breakthrough at Red Star, Alexis Sand was whisked away by former Severny hero and now Iturributa United manager Petter Bielsen to make his name on the Goose Coast. With a decent stretch and a firm punch, he'll do well when defending set pieces in the box, and his reflexes are second to none. There have been some concerns raised over his tendency to stay on his line when a sweeper-keeper approach might be more appropriate, but he is young for a goalkeeper, yet and it is not difficult to see why he has been snapped up by the Iturributan giants.

#14 - AMC - Linus Bosnjakovic - Age 25 - Image Olympique de Fontvielle (VLD) Image - 24 Caps, 4 Assists, 4 Goals
Moving back to RSK after a season spent on loan at Solovetsky Monastery re-energised this former striker, and, since it emerged he now prefers to operate behind the main strikers he has had his services purchased by Olympique de Fontvielle. He can spread the balls around at will, and he brings a one-touch one-two kind of speed and urgency around the box that the Terns aren't normally used to seeing. He'll certainly be a useful tool in Rasmussen's box of tricks, and he hasn't forgotten his striking instincts, either - just watch out for his fizzing shots given the time on the ball. He had an outstanding start to his Terns career with two assists and a goal in five matches, and he'll be determined to oust Zeljeznicar from the pecking order after losing out on the starting place to him during the last Copa.

#15 - DL - Fabian Vaaraniemi - Age 25 - Image FC1. Bjarnarey Flotilla Image - 27 Caps, 3 Assists, 1 Goal
A hugely impressive series of performances in Divisjon One has seen this fleet of foot left back from the Flotilla get another chance on the bench for the Terns. Lightning fast and with a hefty amount of momentum given the chance to run, he will be hard to stop late on in games should he come on. Finally got his first goal with another of his trademark stinging free kicks, and when faced with an intensely defensive opponent, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rasmussen move Kungas-Vaga to defensive midfield and have Vaaraniemi on the pitch just to utilise his dead ball skills when near the opposition box. Intensely loyal to the Flotilla despite undoubtedly having the quality to strut his stuff for a CC-qualifying team, he is a noble player with a strong sense of fair play and absolutely deserves his affectionate nickname of 'Sir Fabian'.

#16 - DR - Moses Luc Bjerregaard - Age 18 - Image RSK Longyearbyen Town Image - 6 Caps, 4 Assists
At eighteen years of age, Bjerregaard is the youngest player to get a call-up to the Terns squad since Alexsandr van Sorensen, and it's not hard to see why. Lightning fast, fearless, with a wicked control of a dead ball, and the willingness to run at players, Bjerregaard has all the credentials required to be a fine right winger. However, when you add a tough tackle, the ability to read the game, and a keen positional sense into the equation, it's easy to see why Bjerregaard can make such a devastating wing-back. Hence, he is perfect for Rasmussen's formation. His stamina and strength in the air still leave something to be desired, but he's still young, and coming off the back of some stunning performances at the Copa (including a sudden start in the final thanks to Hesjedal's unfortunate injury) he is carrying a lot of momentum, and an awful lot of buzz. An exciting prospect.

#17 - DMC - Eikr Lillehammer - Age 25 - Image SK Aasiaat Harbour Image - 26 Caps, 1 Goal
Eikr Lillehammer was never even in contention for an u-21s berth in his youth, and indeed he was let go by the Northbrook Academy without much fanfare and picked up by AFK Hans Island Pioneers. Performances there lead SK Aasiaat Harbour to purchase his services a few seasons ago, and by the end of his first year there he’d very much played his way into being one of the first names on the team sheet. With a battling mentality and a new-found confidence, Eikr is flying, and Rasmussen had an easy decision when it came to deciding who was going to replace Sudesval in the Copa's starting line-up. The one that got away for Northbrook, definitely, and a potential captain himself.

#18 - ST - Vasek Frederiksen - Age 23 - Image Dinamo Esca (MYT) Image - 5 Caps, 1 Assist, 1 Goal
One of the seven uncapped players in the Copa Rushmori squad, Vasek Frederiksen did enough on the way to the final of that tournament to convince Rasmussen that it is he and not Axel Heiburg striker Torsten Wolff who deserved the spot in the World Cup squad. He's enjoying the warm glow of a Mytanar tan these days having moved to Esca from Torshavn, and is now showing the benefits of experiencing the highly competitive Mytanar top flight. Tall and lanky, he's surprisingly good with his touch for a big man, and his gangly presence often belies his deadliness in the box. Has a focused and naturally solitary demeanour that can come across as anti-social and aggressive, but on the pitch this frequently counts as a good thing, and you can bet he is focused solely on scoring for the Terns.

#19 - MC - Jorgen Kirvesniemi - Age 26 - Image Fontvielle Impact (VLD) Image - 38 Caps, 4 Assists, 3 Goals
Appearing regularly in the top flight for Rapid Jan Mayen and then later in Divisjon Two, his signing by Red Star Severny was seen another step in the young midfielder's development; not to mention being a decision that brought him to the attentions of first van der Riise, then Rasmussen, and then the Valladar giants of Fontvielle Impact. He has it all in his locker, and can twist and turn out of danger or provide a battling block as necessary. He can inspire and rifle in assists, or he can sit back and dictate play. Unwilling to let him become a positional expert, the coaches are keen to let him add to his arsenal of overall talents. Could be a world-great in the future if he gets a run at the first team - another Hansen or Bielsen in the making - so this is the time for him to crack on and really make a name for himself.

#20 - AMC - Alexis Zeljeznicar - Age 24 - Image Ituraitz FC (ASG) Image - 20 Caps, 3 Assists, 3 Goals
After starting out for South Factory courtesy of their Polarian connections, Zeljeznicar was snapped up by the famous Ituraitz FC when South Factory were relegated. Like Bosnjakovic and of similar age, he is also a former striker that has since retreated to a more supporting role, reminiscent of another certain Tern at this tournament that you may have heard of. Pacy, aggressive, a handful in the box for both sets of players, and wickedly talented, if he could only stop basing his lifestyle of Timo Skye's he could be very good indeed, though his critics will continue to argue that he doesn't get enough assists.

#21 - MC - Svenbjorn Einarsson - Age 24 - Image Mâ Âlâmëómë (FFD) Image - 4 Caps, 1 Assist
Red Star are making a habit of producing impressive midfielders recently, and their management will be frustrated that Einarsson is another one that they've allowed to slip away through their fingers - in Svenbjorn's case, to Farfadillis, where his experience has seen him drop the "defensive" prefix from his job title and start adding goals and assists (not to mention player awards) to his game. Strong and acutely accurate with his passing, Einarsson is included as a near enough direct replacement for either Cornelius or Villeneuve should either get injured. Having impressed at the Copa, it is likely we will see plenty of Einarsson before the tournament is over, and his youthful energy and willingness to chase any seemingly lost cause could change a game late on.

#22 - DC - Morten Salo - Age 25 - Image Echegoyan FC (ASG) Image - 4 Caps
Blunt, abrasive, and aggressive; Salo is anything but the life and soul of a party. Not that this matters in central defence, of course, and whilst he will be the first to admit his fondness for hoofing the ball out of danger as soon as possible, this can sometimes be the appropriate response. With a sly elbow here and there, Salo is the master of getting away with little fouls when the officials aren't looking, and he can often be seen arguing on the pitch with his teammates, opposition strikers, the match officials, and even his own management team. He only does this because he has the team's best interests at heart however, and he is a keen team player; always being relied upon to give his all for his team, something his new teammates at Echegoyan no doubt appreciate. You want him with you rather than against you, that's for sure.

#23 - DC - Vladimir Lucic - Age 26 - Image SK Franz Josef City Image - 12 Caps
This tall defender isn’t shy when it comes to making a tackle, and his readiness to go to ground and expertly take out both ball and player in a legal way has saved many a goal in the past. He is able to risk the offside trap more than usual thanks mainly to his sheer pace in a straight line, and this will come in useful if he comes on to help tired legs in the rest of the defence. Imperious in the air, and takes his spot in the World Cup squad after winning the Copa Rushmori and the Champions' Cup in consecutive years, his roles in which helped him oust Nordenberg from the twenty-three. So he now has a point to prove as well as having acquired a taste for winning trophies...

TACTICS: "The Pythagorean" 2-3-3-2
The Polarian game is fast, quick, and physical. They won't give you a second on the ball to think, and they won't hold back in the tackle. In the centre of the park they will play a possession based midfield game of triangles, though a defence splitting pass could come at any moment towards the fast and direct attack. Rasmussen plays a narrow and heavily modified diamond formation dubbed the Pythagorean by the sporting press. It is reliant upon two key triangular sets of players that transcend the normal "rows" of player in conventional formation layouts. Oyen-Spekke, Wien, and Sudesval will act as the defensive triangle, and van Sorensen, Saarinen, and Koleh-Mainen will counter at the other end as the offensive triangle. Sudesval and van Sorensen's roles in this scheme are absolutely crucial, as their job is to support and unlock the other two players in their respective triangles, providing outlets and creativity in abundance. Villeneuve and Cornelius are part of a compact and creative midfield that will supply steel or style whenever the situation demands it, as well as partnering up with their respective full backs to form a kind of "bumper" that sweeps the flanks in attack or folds in to protect the penalty area in defence. Fitness of all players will therefore be key to the success of this plan; not just the constant positional changing demanded of Sudesval and van Sorensen, but the athleticism of Petersen and Küngas-Vaga in particular will also be tested to the limit as their roles require frequent attacking. It's not quite a 4-3-3, it's not quite a 4-1-2-1-2, and it's not quite a W-M... its the Pythagorean.

Choose my goalscorers Y, but try to keep them in the starting 11
Godmod scoring events Y, but not too ridiculous
RP injuries to my players Y, but not to serious
Godmod injuries to my players Y, but please don't cripple them
Hand out yellow cards to my players Y, but not excessively
Hand out red cards to my players Y, but not too often
Godmod other events Y, make it funny. As you may have notice Kalumba has a wee bit of a hooligan problem so feel free to mention that

And the team:

Manager: George Davies- Resigned from the first team after a very disappointing start to the World Cup 56, which he deemed disgraceful for a team who had just won the Baptism of Fire, but has since returned to the side. Hoping to rebuild Kalumba's international reputation after a long period away from competition and a decent showing at the last few WCs. Has opted to leave a number of veterans behind for this campaign and place Kalumba's future in the exciting hands of youth.

First Team Coach: Magnus Malan- Led the team throughout the last World Cup without much success but he did record a notable victory against highly rated Newmanistan, and suffered only narrow defeats to teams in the top 25 in the world. Very defensive minded and his approach led the team to be nicknamed 'The Tortoises'.

Goalkeepers:
Ulusu Mtanda-No.1 23 year old novice, looking to make his debut this time out. Part of the Kahali Spears team which is taking the Kalumban League by storm, and holds a new clean sheet record after going 14 games unbeaten this season.
Frank Burnden-No.67 42 year old veteran keeper, useful back up option. Will not expect to start but will most probably be on the bench to cover for the outstanding 'Super Terry' Ottbourne.
Peter Franks-No.41 23 year old rookie, first selection for the team. Missed out on going to the Di Bradini cup by 2 months, so will be hoping to play a few games to secure his position as long term successor to Ottbourne. May play in less crucial group games or when Kalumba are knocked out. Still strugging to fulfill his early potentiial.

Defenders:
LB-Derek Ward, 29 year old truck driver, stupid but effective No. 12 Recently banned from driving for Drink-Driving, will be hoping to secure a place at a foreign club team to provide him with an income.
LCB-Vincent Mkure, 19 year old, member of the Kahali Spears No. 14 Built like the proverbial ox this young man has a long career ahead of him at the heart of Kalumba's defence. And such is his maturity he is already being spoken of as a future captain.
LCB-Duncan Edward, 22 year old, pretty boy, but solid at the back No. 4 Recently married with a child will his mind be fully on the World Cup?
RCB-Kaneu Daima, 22 year old, 6 foot 9, deadly in the air No. 6 Last minute inclusion ahead of the injured Von Harniggen, but his displays for Kahali this season warrant an inclusion anyway.
RCB-Norman Baker, 28 year old bank manager, great slide tackler No. 5 Castigated in the news for losing his bank a large amount of money speculating on the stock market, will try to rebuild his reputation.
RB-James Downs, 39 year old ex-rugpy prop forward, solid but no agility whatsoever No. 3 Recently dropped from his Rugby team so is looking to football for his wage.
RB-Frank Ruyten, 23 year old civil servant, very fast but poor crossing ability No. 19 Has worked on his crossing but still struggles to fulfill his promise as an attacking fullback.

Midfielders:
LM-Peter Kurtz, 25 year old full time proffesional footballer No. 21 Still struggling for form but has improved at the World Cup scoring twice and creating another couple for Kalumba.
LM-James Fish, 19 year old protege No. 9 Still a protege, retained for the first team instead of the U21s so Davies clearly intends to play him.
CM-Ollie Roberts, 24 year old model and dancing champion No. 18 First high profile homosexual in Kalumba. Has moved to Southern Cynocephali to play proffesionally and be open with his sexuality.
CM-Gabriel Danukwe, 20 year old Kahali Spears strong man No. 16 An old fashioned enforcer, Danukwe will have to watch his discipline.
CM -Laurence Kabila, 20 year old Kahali Spears creative midfielder No. 15 Picked up 23 assists this season and is seen as a major part of the future of Kalumban football.
CAM -Ben Cheeter, 23 built like an arab donkey but with the shot of an angry mule No. 27 Didn't impress at either the BoF or the last WC but still integral to the team as he links the midfield to the strikers.
CDM- Godwin Kuli, 19 year old sweeper for Kahali Spears No. 17 Despite the unfashionability of the position this young man has played it with aplomb and will hope to reproduce such form for the national side.
RM-Jameson Slutei, 23 year old and rapid No. 33 Lucky to get in the team, but an injury to Abouto left the position open and Slutei will look to make it his own.
RW-Jermaine Filks, 33 year old great crosser of the ball No. 11 Due to Abouto's excellence has yet to feature but has worked on his left sided play in hope of getting a starting position.

Strikers:
RS- Roland Grezlak, 28 year old, 6 foot strong as an ox No. 8 Came on to score many a crucial goal, will be looking for me involvment this time round.
RS- Anthony Peters, 23 year old, youngster but top scorer last season No. 99 Barely featured but did score our second goal in the BoF final. Will be looking to break into the team on a regular basis.
LS-Piet Von Kruger, 21 year old, second striker for Kahali spears No. 21 An excellent partner for Watusi, if they can recreate their club form they will be a feature for years to come in the Kalumban national team.
CF- Peterson Watusi, 17 year old, 20 goal hero for Kahali Spears No. 10 His goals have won him the place of veteran Kevin Davis, it is hoped the pressure won't overwhelm the young man.
CF- Craig Garden, 28 year old, reliable but not much skill No. 93 Another non-starter and like Malone will struggle to record a further cap to his collection of seven.

Gordonopian National Team
World Cup 66

Image
For the first time in its history, Gordonopia enters World Cup Qualifying as a top seed. With the Empire at the top of its sporting game, following a dominant performance in distance running at the recent Olympics and a runner-up finish in the Champions' Cup, pressure on the National Team to perform will be greater than ever.

Of course, the team playing today is one very different from the one that took the field back in the qualifiers for the 60th Cup; both more talented and more tempered by years on the international level. In fact, with 12 years having passed since the Empire stepped onto the world stage, and entire generation of players has come up prepared for the international game.

There is no greater statement to that than the roster itself, which lists only one player, captain Davis Roger, who participated in that first cycle. That certainly does not mean, though, that the team lacks proven talent; seven of the eleven from the successful campaign two years ago return, with a number of talented players from the GPL and abroad finding representation.

Speaking of abroad players, though, the number playing in foreign leagues has once again fallen, thanks largely to continuing powerhouse that is the GPL. After three cycles in the world's top three, and FC Deska placing second, the 'talent drain' that lead to half of the starting lineup playing for foreign clubs has been reversed; the roster contains only one player with a foreign club.

One notable first for this season is that Gordonopia's first World Cup Hall of Fame entrant will be named following this cycle. Whether it will be a player still on the roster or one from success past will be left to find out.

Starting Eleven - 4-3-1-2 Formation

Formation

Jay Neuman - Vice Captain
Probably the most unexpected choice, it is impossible to deny Neuman a starting spot, barring injury or illness. Six Golden Gloves with FC Deska and a powerful performance in every competition, ranging from the ever-dominant Northern Wall in the GPL, to the World Cup proper last year, to the final match of the 50th Champions' Cup, are a testament to Neuman's prowess. It will be a long time before this spot is filled by someone else
GK - 28 - Club: Image FC Deska - 86 Caps - 0 Goals

Oliver White
Critics prior to last cycle pointed out that White had little experience internationally to justify a place on the starting lineup, and only a couple years at the club level. Those critics turned out to be dead wrong when manager Michael Neu's gamble paid off. The retirement of Roger Steiner left a huge hole in the lineup which White adeptly filled, becoming a powerful presence in the backline, just as he had after Steiner left FC Deska for Astograth. One for the future, White is the first of several dominant Deska player in the defensive positions
LB - 23 - Club: Image FC Deska - 23 Caps - 1 Goals

Eric Franklin
Though he may be the weakest link in the back line, Franklin is a significant barrier breaker in that he is the first New Gordonopian to crack United Gordonopia's starting lineup. Strong performances for the New Gordonopian side in AOCAF, where Franklin is vice-captain, and with his club, which he has helped lead to promotion, are a testament to his abilities, as are his six caps as a substitute last cycle.
CB - 24 - Club: Image FC Kjin (New Gordonopia) - 6 Caps - 0 Goals

Rick Balmer
Michael Neu is known for big risks, but few are as big as placing an untested-20 year old in the starting eleven of the world's 16th ranked nation. If his club abilities are any indication of his potential, though, Balmer may give Oliver White a run as the best Gordonopian defender of his generation. After replacing the dud-signing of Arn Patrussen as a youth callup, Balmer proved to be the missing link that helped Basin Plain to a league double two years ago, and a ranking as the 18th best club in the world by UICA. Hopefully he will find just as much success on the world's biggest football stage.

Another new addition to the starters, Mikah Laslo joins several Deska teammates on the pitch. After several years of strong club performances, and good showings as both a sub and, later last cycle, an occasional starter, Laslo's spot was universally assumed. A unique back in that his incredible speed often finds him up front, contributing crosses and passes into the box, he is a challenge for even the quickest striker to overtake.
RB - 25 - Club: Image FC Deska - 13 Caps - 1 Goals

Albert Wagner
After an injury to Zachary Johnston last cycle, Albert Wagner was forced to step up the starting eleven. Once there, he proved to be a better choice than his predecessor, and thus a full spot in the lineup comes this time around. Wagner is perhaps the best domestic player for the formidable Teva FC side, which has derived most of its success from international signings.
LDM - 25 - Club: Image Teva FC - 10 Caps - 0 Goals

Davis Roger - Captain
The last player from the World Cup 60 qualifiers, Davis Roger's selection as captain is perhaps Neu's most controversial this cycle. In Gordonopia, Roger is perhaps both the most hated and most loved player after he became the first Gordonopian to win a Champions' Cup... as part of Polar Islandstates' SK Franz Joseph City's squad that defeated Gordonopia's own FC Deska in the final. His National Team Deska teammates, though, have rallied around Roger, defending his captaincy. As a player, his prodigious talent cannot be denied, having been a starter now for seven straight cycles.
CDM - 31 - Club: Image SK Franz Joseph City - 115 Caps - 3 Goals

Jonathon Blaine
The fourth and final Deska starter, Jonathon Blaine strikes fear into players attempting to bring balls up the wing. In his most recent GPL season, several outlets proclaimed him the best in the league at shutting down runs, and his technically skilled passing abilities allow him to turn his numerous stops into counters. After a few caps as a substitute last cycle, Blaine will finally bring his talents to the starting lineup.
RDM - 22 - Club: Image FC Deska - 4 Caps - 0 Goals

Marc Castleton
After being thrust into the starting lineup through the tragic 16/64 Bombing, Marc Castleton proved his own talents in both the Cup of Harmony and last qualification cycle. Though at the time the youngest starter, Castleton is now a World Cup veteran, who will do everything he can to return. His crossing abilities are among the best in the GPL, but he is also talented at taking shots of his own, making him an all-around offensive weapon.
AM -22 - Club: Image Union Holiday - 30 Caps - 9 Goals

Donovan Richt
When Jere Tobias unexpectedly retired from international play, a massive void was left behind. Donovan Richt turned out to be the man to fill it, giving Tolven their first NT starter. His blistering performance in both the qualifiers and the Cup Proper showed that he was ready for the top level, and his strong performances in the GPL speak to that as well. More of a poacher than his counterpart striker, the contrasting abilities of the two up front gives a duality to Gordonopia's offense.
ST - 25 - Club: Image Tolven - 7 Caps - 3 Goals

Jonathon Turner
He was the surprise last cycle, but this time around Jonathon Turner's abilities are well known; some of the best strikes to come out of the team last cycle came from his boot or head. A brilliant play creator, Turner has helped revitalize Gordonopia FC's offense, and hopefully he will continue to do the same for the National side.

Coaching

Manager: Michael Neu

The GFF scored a major coup when it managed to retain Neu as manager. Perhaps most successful Gordonopian manager in history, Neu could have easily found a place at a higher ranked national side.

His first two cycles as a manager were with FC Deska, where he laid the foundation for the league's superpower by building a system which won the Regular Season in 2012 and the Gordonopia Cup in 2014. Following that success, he signed a three-cycle contract with the GFF to manage the national side, where he built the squad from a newcomer on the international stage to a semi-finalist in the 63rd World Cup.

After the 65th cycle, he was expected to move abroad, but instead the GFF announced they had agreed to a deal for one more go.

Neu is a defensive minded coach, but one who is no stranger to working with talented strikers. With the National Team, he tends to favor a 4-3-1-2 formation, with the 3 being primarily defensive midfielders. A solid defensive core was built up around several of Neu's former players from Deska, while a pair of superb strikers, Jere Tobias and Vonn Keller, became the crux of the offense. Though there have been numerous changes since he first took the helm, everyone in Gordonopia hopes that Neu can lead the team all the way.

Assistants: Thomas Cox, David Günther, Max Fleisching

Stadium and Travel Information
Empire Stadium, Gordonopia City
Capacity: 160,000
Though most Gordonopian running and football sites are viewed with a sort of reverence, only a handful are holy sites. Empire, directly adjacent to the equally sized Empire Track, is one of them. Built as one of the first major public works projects following the War of Restoration with 160,000 seats, it is the largest football venue in Gordonopia, and consistently sells out.

Though it is not the home site for any clubs, it is the home of the National Team, as well as several major competitions. The Gordonopia Cup, a post-season playoff for the best teams from the Gordonopia Premier League, sees its final game played at Empire every season. The final of the 49th UICA Champions' Cup, where Selyne City Athenians of the Northern Sunrise Islands defeated the world's all time greatest club team, Yuba United of Commerce Heights, 2-0, was held at Empire last year. It also played host to the final of the 51st Baptism of Fire four years ago, in which New Sideburn edged out Nenets Autonomous Okrug one-nil, and the recent 53rd Baptism of Fire where Welsh Cowboy defeated The Paradystopi Lymryk Isles 3-1. Above all other footballing venues in the Empire, Empire Stadium is truly a cathedral to the sport.

When traveling to Empire, one must be aware of the city itself. Gordonopia City is one of the famous Gordonopian 'megacities', with its metro area home to 214,000,000 souls, and the city-proper housing 69,000,000. Visiting teams will be given world-class practice facilities, and will be put up at the Imperial Hotel on Inn Boulevard, adjacent to Restoration Park where Empire is located.

Language

Gordonopia is, in general, a bi-lingual nation. Anyone with an understanding of English should have little trouble, as 85% of the country speaks English as a first language, and 97% speak it at a conversational level. Likewise, German speakers should also have a relatively easy time finding people to communicate with, as 8% of Gordonopia City speaks the language as their mother tongue, 30% are totally fluent, and nearly 80% have basic conversational skills. Other regional languages include Old-Gordonopian and Kjeldoran, found primarily in remote villages, while immigrant languages may be found in their respective neighborhoods.

Transportation

Such a massive city requires a colossal transportation network to function, and Gordonopia City has just that. To begin with, multiple large international airports offer several portals for incoming teams.

There is also an intricate, well-organized public transportation system, which is highly recommended for teams. Extensive subway, light rail, bus-only lanes, and commuter train lines offer excellent methods of travel for both your team and fans, and priority passes are available for visiting squads. Shuttles from the hotel to the nearby practice site and Empire will be provided.

Renting automobiles or other transportation is an option, though road traffic outside of public transport is generally a nightmare, and thus not recommended.

Accommodation and Currency

The Imperial Hotel at Restoration Park is one of a chain of state-run high-end hotels. The hotel itself offers amenities from world-class restaurants to spas. Restoration Park across the street is one of the largest open spaces in the city, constructed after the War of Restoration as a monument. The North End of the park is home to the IGC Premier Center, an exhibition hall that will be hosting the Gordonopian Electronic Gaming Show during the first home match, and may have other conventions taking place. The South End is home to the Imperial Military Museum, where the military history of Gordonopia can be found. In the West is Empire Track, a running venue just as large as Empire Stadium and dedicated to Gordonopia's other great athletic pursuit. Empire Stadium is located on the East End, with a large memorial to those who gave their lives in the War located in the center. The park itself is massive, four square miles, built by joining several former parks via neighborhoods that had been ruined during the war.

Following the War, it was decided that the currency should be changed to the Universal Standard Dollar, or USD, in order to make international transactions easier.

Leisure

When not training or playing, players will have a diverse selection of leisure activities at their fingertips, beyond Restoration Park.

Gordonopia City has a sizable, diverse nightlife scene, ranging from old bars and taverns to cutting-edge nightclubs.

If you're feeling classy, Gordonopia is world renowned for its opera, which has become the one of the popular genres of music in the country, much to the surprise of the rest of the world. In Gordonopia City, one can even find visit the beautiful Staatsoper Gordonopia and see the nation's most renowned performers.

Lovers of food will find Gordonopia to be a very diverse culinary experience, with a unique blend of English, German, and traditional cuisine found nowhere else on Earth. The most famous local dishes include Chorhash, a cut of any white fish seasoned with salt, diced and mixed with pieces of bratwurst, marinated in a spicy Tevan marinade known as Dikit, and fried, and Vadkhor, a roll with an outer texture of cornbread but an inner texture of a dinner roll, known as a zorje, and fries it golden brown. It is then covered in honey and cooked for a short duration. Sugar is sprinkled on top, and the interior is filled with a whipped cream-like filling known as Castd. International dishes such as steaks, schnitzel, hamburgers, and various chicken dishes are also popular. Visitors and players are also fortunate enough to have access to a restaurant from their home country, as any nation with an embassy in the capitol also has at least restaurant opened serving its traditional cuisine.

Additionally, all players in Gordonopia will receive a complimentary Titan game console from Gordonopian Games, as well as a copy of World Cup 66.

FOOTIE FURY

The Goats Gear Up for Another World Cup

By Jean Marc Charjan

For another year, the Goats of Neu Engollon will give it a go and try to make some headway against the mostly better heap of teams in this 66th edition of the World Cup, to be held in Audioslavia. It is hoped that some lessons have been learned from the players that have gone to overseas teams. The most recent trades sent Marco Fantinelli and Matteo Grazzani over to the Equestrian States to compete in their Association Football league and brief reports show that they have done well and really represented the Alpen spirit in the Equine lands. Coach Henau has decided to keep the structure and roster of the Goats the same for this outing, giving them a chance to win some redemption. Henau assured us that while the players are the same, the strategies have improved as the Confederacy's finest footballers bring more to the table this year, as opposed to last.
Every pub is sure to be filled with fans hoping the Goats can move on to the next stage this year.

Nation Background

A protectorate of the Auroral Technocratic Union of Mizuyuki, Kitsuneshima is a relatively new nation, having only been formed through a secession of a number of Mizuyuki's island colonies from its local administration a year previously. However, this change is said in political circles to be merely cosmetic, as the Auroral Union remains in de facto control over the entire island chain in the prefecture due to the "revolutionaries" being unable to gain international recognition as a sovereign country.

Mizuyuki's comparatively overwhelming military might cast a shadow over Kitsuneshima. Following months of negotiations between Premier Reizei Mikoto of Mizuyuki and the revolutionaries, the island chain of Kitsuneshima was officially made a protectorate of Mizuyuki, formally The Scattered Isles of Kitsuneshima, Protectorate of the Auroral Technocratic Union of Mizuyuki. However, a clause exists in the official treaty that compromises Kitsuneshima's already insignificant "independence"; Mizuyuki retains the right to revoke their protectorate status and reintegrate Kitsuneshima into their territories without notice. That being the case, however, during her opening speech at an official ceremony held at Kizuna Kyūden (絆宮殿) to recognise Kitsuneshima as a protectorate of the Auroral Union, Premier Reizei of Mizuyuki assured the leaders of Kitsuneshima that she did not have any plans to sanction such a revocation of their status as long as her party was in power in the Mizuyuki National Diet.

Soon afterwards, a puppet government of the Auroral Union was put into place; the leaders of the revolution were given nominal positions in the newly formed Kitsuneshima cabinet, which is known as The Committee of Judgment (判決委員会), Hanketsu Iinkai, (Judgment for short) while a loyalist of the Mizuyuki administration, Mikazuki Akira (三日月 明), the sister of Mizuyukian Minister of Education Mikazuki Jin (三日月 仁) was installed as the Mizuyukian High Commissioner in Kizuna. A caricature of Akira is prominently displayed on the flag of Kitsuneshima, and she is set to continue presiding over the Scattered Isles for at least the duration of Reizei's term as Premier of Mizuyuki.

Team Background

A group of ragtag professionals that originally held Mizuyukian citizenship, the members that make up Kitsuneshima's team are footballers that defected to Kitsuneshima following the Treaty of Kizuna that officially declared Kitsuneshima as a protectorate of Mizuyuki in protest of the decision. They claim that the formation of Kitsuneshima as a protectorate and not a fully independent country is unlawful, and thus chose to protest the decision by claiming Kitsunian citizenship and playing for their hatchling national team. However, since the Treaty of Kizuna holds that all citizens of Kitsuneshima are, by extension, citizens of Mizuyuki, this move was also criticised by many as ineffectual and merely a plea to garner attention.

Led by the enigmatic former Mikan Wave coach Mihashi Chiyo, the Kitsunes (or alternatively Foxes) play rather offensively, with the team's heat maps showing that they often set up camp in their opponent's half while being content to let their defence remain threadbare. Kitsuneshima may be offensively oriented, but Mihashi favours an unconventional false nine formation (akin to RL Barcelona) that does not employ a true striker. Rather, the team's attacking midfielder, usually Sakurada Sachiko, plays as the focal point of the team's attack, both from a creative and finishing standpoint.

Note that this is only a rough outline; as the manager Mihashi Chiyo is a very enigmatic and unconventional coach (we usually don't know what goes on in her mind either), so feel free to RP Kitsuneshima's tactical changes as you see fit. Anything goes, be it cramming the outfield players into the opposition box for a corner, taking off all the defensive players in a winning position, or even subbing the goalie on in place of an outfield player.
