Xamgibtopia was a small nation, known for its Ottifants, Bananas, Origami and Opium. Also they loved Cricket and Baseball. For people not familiar to these sports this seems legit. The truce is, that in its long history of beeing conquered, another nation brought baseball, long after Cricket was established, to these nation.

The last conquerer was Kriegiersien, taking over after a short, devastating war, uniting Xamgibtopien in the region Ghandi. As the Xamgibtopien Baseballteams are much better, the players for the World Baseball Classics Team of Kriegiersien are consisting mainly of Xamgibtopiens. This is the second time this team competes.

As many Baseball places were bombed in Xamgibtopia, a new Stadium was build for the World Baseball Classics 26, in Schoenwetter, the capital of Kriegiersien itself. Now it is done.

For the 27th WBC, Ko-oren needs a way to deal with its sudden and newfound status as top team. Fifth in the world was not something anyone on the team, the staff or in the stadium thought to be possible. The Greenblues went into WBC 26 as the 17th team of the world that hoped to make the WBC proper and maybe advance one or two rounds. For some reason, the story did not end after one or two rounds, but all the way to the end (not the final though, but the 3rd place playoff). Eventually the team ended up losing the last 5 out of 6 games in fourth place, but it was the first time a Ko-orenite national team finished so far in an official tournament, and the biggest tournament in the sport. Anyway, a group of 30-40 year olds is still the flagship of our nation, and now they are back for the sixth time at a World Baseball Classic. This edition is held in Maklohi Vai and Saintland, and on the way there, we need to deal with Imota, Kinzar, The Sovan Antithesis and Aardenland, in that order. Here is a little writeup of the tournament and our opponents.

Maklohi Vai and Saintland
Maklohi Vai is in Atlantian Oceania, together with us. They are further away from us than nations in other regions, however: while we are in the northwest, Maklohi Vai is in the far southeast of the region. Our nations are pretty similar however: islands in the corner of Atlantian Oceania, founded by seafarers (though Ko-oren was found about 5000 years earlier), both grew out into compassionate, cultured and pacifist nations. The national baseball teams have never met each other, but the national football teams have: two victories for the Greenblues during the qualification for World Cup 62, a win and a loss during the World Cup 63 qualifying campaign, and a draw and a win in the most recent World Cup playoffs.

Saintland is in World Changers, a small region far away. Another nation somewhat like Ko-oren: isolated during most of their time, developed a very own culture and the majority of the population is religious. Our national baseball teams actually do have a shared history: two games, played during WBC 25, both ended in a win for the Greenblues. Since then, Ko-oren and Saintland have repeatedly met each other during international tournaments, and most recently the Beach Cup had Ko-oren visit Saintland.

We're lucky to have these two nations in charge of the World Baseball Classic: a tournament that Ko-oren takes so seriously, and has been so successful at. Two nations a lot like ours, though still separated by a lot of ocean (which even plays a large role on the flags of both us and Maklohi Vai, for instance).

Imota
Imota is the first (and the fifth) opponent on the way to WBC 27. Provided we actually make it there. Imota should not be the biggest problem on the road there as they are currently unranked. Judging from their roster, they are taking this very seriously and all the big names from their league are in the national team roster, and we are not just talking about the players here. The coaching staff might even be larger than the Ko-orenite coaching staff! The names of their players resemble the nicknames of our players somewhat: finally we have a Japanese team against us. Still there are no players that share names, but then again our players' nicknames have been taken from Japanese history (not Imota's). Little more is known about the team, not even our BCCC headquarters could help us with more information on their clubs, let alone players.

Kinzar
This team is probably going to be the major problem. Ranked 14th, they are the best team from Pot 2. So finally when we have fought our way into Pot 1, we come across the best challenging team (wait for it, we also have the best team from Pot 3 in our group). We have never played them before, and as of now they have even not disclosed any information. Hopefully we know more about them before our match (on days 2 and 6), because a lack of information can be deadly against teams like this.

The Sovan Antithesis
The second unranked team in our group. Like Kinzar, we have never played them nor do they have any information available on their team. We will be back with more information.

Aardenland
The 32nd ranked nation of the world, Aardenland is the best team of Pot 3. With this position, they probably hope to upset the Pot 2 team for a place in the World Baseball Classic. To their misfortune, they have to upset the best of all teams in Pot 2. For the rest, Aardenland plays in a stadium twice as big as ours, and has a dedicated team designed to make it difficult for us and Kinzar. Good luck to them, and we'll see each other on the last day of qualifying, halfway and at the end.
Should problems arise for them, they'll just get Hayri Kleingeld on the pitch to switch things around, but just for minor issues. Just type that into Google Translate from Dutch to English to see what I mean.

Wait! Why are we using this roster?!

So the nation of Milchama is quite confused after a terrible WBC 26 why the same roster is still completely in tact for WBC 27. Milchamian Baseball Federation President Elvis Glork said, "Well 27 has traditionally been a lucky number for the Warriors as we made our first World Cup in WC 27 and more importantly we really can't be bothered to come up with new names as we have no time for such things." While the first reason is weird, I really have no idea what he's talking about with the second reason. Whatever, the point is that new manager James Merter has a bunch of hacks, has beens, and generally awful baseball players to deal with. Especially because of Milchama's drop in the world rankings due to the piss poor performance of the same players, Merter really has his work cut out for him. Luckily, since he's the best Milchamian third baseman of all time, as well as one of the best people ever he should be fine. I'm sure the Milchama Warriors will retain some semblance of decency. They might even make a semi-finals, though I doubt it. Who knows? Let's just look on the bright side and hope for the best.

World Baseball Classic 27: Preview

For the first time ever, the Kingdom of Saintland will be hosting a major international sports event. During the last World Baseball Classic, officials from Maklohi Vai approached the King's Government about co-hosting this WBC. The King's Government official that received their message forwarded it directly to King Paulus XV. The King approved the decision and secretly sent some of his most trusted officials to Maklohi Vai to plan out the bid. After nearly 2 months of negotiations, the bid was finalized and sent to the WBC Council, which selected the bid. "When officials from Maklohi Vai inquired with my Government about a joint bid for this WBC, I was surprised. Both World Baseball Classics that my National Team has competed in were solo-hosted, by the Equestrian States and Cassadaigua. While neither the Equestrian States nor Cassadaigua has ever engaged in the kinds of shenanigans that Liventia has engaged in, I still don't regard either nation as a safe place to visit. I look forward to the upcoming WBC and should be back home before the playoffs begin. I like the new 12 groups of 5 format better. There will be no convoluted tiebreakers to decide which 3rd place finishers advance to the Round of 24. Instead, the top 2 will advance and I want to put everybody on notice that I expect Petrus Tragus to, at the very least, lead the National Baseball Team to another Round of 16. Just because we are co-hosting the World Baseball Classic does not mean that the National Team should expect to take it easy and let somebody else win. I want them to win and I expect them to win. The goal is to advance to the playoffs and win the WBC on our home turf. The only way that the National Baseball Team will be leaving the Kingdom in the playoffs is if they end up facing Maklohi Vai at some point, which is a possibility. Regardless, I expect victory and will accept nothing short of victory." - King Paulus XV

The Saintland National Baseball Team will be unchanged from World Baseball Classic 26. Petrus Tragus decided to stick with the same team that took Saugeais to the limit in the Round of 16 of the last World Baseball Classic. However, he has decided to make some changes to the batting order. Tragus will once again be the leadoff man for the Sanctii and Ioannes Sentius will bat second. Lucius Maccius remains the cleanup hitter. "Iron" Lucas Maianius will bat 6th once again. Marcus Vagnius and Marcus Tragus will once again bat 8th and 9th in the order. However, 3 players will change positions in the batting order.

Matthaeus Bebius, the brother of Ioannes Bebius, will now bat 3rd in the order. Bebius has fully recovered from his injury and is currently having the best season of his career. Despite missing several weeks for the last World Baseball Classic, Bebius has already reached 30-30 this season. He is also leading the league in batting average with a .341 average. That is a full 10 points than the .331 that Petrus Tragus is currently hitting. Petrus Iulus will now bat 5th in the Sanctii order. Iulus has brought up his batting average this season and is still delivering the same combination of power and speed, with a high walk rate, that he has delivered in the past. Hitting .282 this season, Iulus is finally reaching his full potential, as his strikeout rate declines. Paulus Sittius will now bat 7th in the order. Sittius remains overweight, which has cost him his speed over the past few years, but he still finds a way to hit over .300.

However, one of the stories of the year in the Baseball League is the emergence of Marcus Tragus as a capable hitter. The younger brother of Petrus Tragus, Marcus has always been an exceptional defensive 2nd baseman. According to the World Changers Regional Scouting Bureau, which is widely regarded as one of the elite sports scouting services in the entire multiverse, Marcus Tragus is and has been an elite defensive 2nd baseman. They would know, since WCRSB reports are used by RepublicSoft to make the Real Baseball Simulator and other interactive sports simulators in the Real Simulator line. Despite this, Tragus was always a poor hitter. Last year, he had a percentages line of .246/.311/.339. However, this year, Tragus is hitting a respectable .296/.351/.408.

The maturation of Tragus leaves Lucius Maccius as the weakest hitter in the Sanctii starting lineup. Maccius is hitting .263 this season, which is better than last year. However, Maccius's value is primarily in his power and his very high walk rate. Once again, his on-base percentage is over .100 points better than his batting average. The one weak hitter on the roster is Thomas Ennius, who is slumping to a .228 batting average this season. Ennius is a catcher, who was chosen for the National Baseball Team because of his defense, so Petrus Tragus is unlikely to be concerned about his batting average.

Although Paulus Famulus threw a no-hitter in the last WBC, he will remain the third starter for the Sanctii. Ioannes Bebius, who has struggled in past WBCs, will return as Sanctii ace and will make 3 starts. Also making 3 starts for the Sanctii will be Andreas Fundanus. Although all 3 are powerful pitchers, Famulus once again has the highest strikeout rate. Famulus averages around 12 strikeouts per 9 innings this season, which is actually just slightly better than his performance last year. Ioannes Bebius has the best control of the 3 pitchers, walking just over 2 batters per 9 innings this season. Andreas Fundanus, who has the lowest strikeout rate of all 3 Sanctii starting pitchers has a strikeout rate just over 9 per 9 innings this season.

In the bullpen, the "Wild One" Josephus Oppius returns as the closer. Oppius has a high strikeout rate, but he also has problems with his control. Petrus Nonius is also a power pitcher. Lucas Rufus, Thomas Ulpius and Marcus Laelius are finesse pitchers. Laelius is actually a starter and Ulpius tends to go back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen. Alessandro Arius is a knuckleball pitcher. While his ERA is currently in the mid-3s, that is deceptive. Due to the nature of the knuckleball, Arius has had several off-nights that have artificially inflated his ERA this season.

This time around, the Sanctii were drawn into Group 2. Under the new 12 groups of 5 format, the top 2 teams from each group will advance to the playoffs. Another result of the format is that, while there will still be 10 matchdays, 2 byes will be included in the schedule for the Group Stage. Under the latest rankings, the Sanctii are ranked 27th in the world, which means that they are a 2 seed. Their first opponent in the group stage will be 43rd ranked Cowardly Pacifists. Coming into the last WBC unranked, the Cowardly Pacifists finished 4th in their group, behind New Montreal States, Western Cuba and Qazox with a 5-5 record. This implies that they may be a tough opponent.

However, Cowardly Pacifists will probably not be well received when they arrive in the Kingdom to play at Royal Park. It has come to the SP's attention that their media is spreading false and malicious rumors about our Kingdom. They are alleging that our police officers and prison guards are so negligent as to actually permit criminals to commit the grave sin of suicide under their watch. The last time we had a suicide while in police custody was 15 years ago. Before that, the last suicide in custody had occurred 11 years earlier. Further, we consider their claims regarding our justice system to be malicious libels. The right to a speedy trial is a fundamental principle of our justice system. Trials are held on a daily basis and reporters from the SP are always present at trials, by the King's request. We at the SP can assure everybody reading this that we do have a court system and trials in the Kingdom. The only exception to the right to a trial is the King's right to decree an Attainder. Attainders count as automatic convictions and there is no such thing as a secret Attainder. Technically, a trial for witchcraft would be handled by the Church of Saintland, not the King's Government, but the last trial for witchcraft was over 300 years ago. The laws remain on the books because the Bible mandates that witches must be burned at the stake. While it is believed that witchcraft was eradicated, if it is ever proven to not be eradicated, that law will be necessary.

The second opponent for the Sanctii will be the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, a game that will be held in Quebec. The Quebecois are ranked 54th in the world. Entering the last WBC, they were 58th in the world. They went 2-8 and somehow still gained 4 spots in the rankings. As of this writing, they are the only team competiing in Group 2 that has not yet announced their roster. The 3rd opponent for the Sanctii will be Darmen, who will be visiting the Sanctii. Darmen came into the last WBC ranked 2nd in the world, after winning WBC 25. They failed to defend their title, finishing 3rd in their group with a 6-4 record and being eliminated from the WBC in the Group Stage after losing both of their games against Thatius. Darmen will be hoping to bounce back in this WBC. After a bye, the Sanctii will visit North Franklin. North Franklin is an unranked newcomer in this WBC. The WCRSB knows very little about them, so they are definitely the wild card of this group. As usual, the schedule will be the same in the second half of the Group Stage, but with the home and away teams reversed.

This isn't exactly a very difficult group on paper for the Sanctii. All 4 of their opponents failed to make the playoffs last time. Meanwhile, the Sanctii advanced to the Round of 16 last time. For the first time ever in a major international tournament, the Sanctii are favorites to advance past the group stage. The story of WBC 26 was a story of redemption. In the first co-hosted WBC since WBC 16, the Sanctii will not be sneaking up on anybody. Although the new world #1 Zwangzug, fellow host Maklohi Vai and defending champions New Montreal States are likely the pre-tournament favorites to win this WBC, the Sanctii have to be regarded as a dark horse to win the entire thing. With the WBC being held on home turf this time, King Paulus XV will likely consider any failure to make the playoffs to be even worse than the team's disastrous performance in WBC 25 under disgraced former captain Petrus Arminus, who is currently serving a lengthy prison term for fornicating in a public restroom with a prostitute. Petrus Tragus led the team to the playoffs last time. If he does not do so once again, he will likely be replaced as captain for WBC 28.

Les Royales Roster and Information for World Baseball Classic 27, Hosted by Maklohi Vai and Saintland

We're back. Now the third ranked team in the world, 'We're back', was all Victor Santana had to say at the press conference following the National Team Selection camp. That would have to be the motto of Les Royales this WBC, who look to avenge their finals defeat 1 year ago to win the big title. No longer can we say that these boys lack championship experience (Copa Rushmori de Beisbol), or going deep in the playoffs (Game 6, 17 innings ring a bell?). Now, the boys of summer from across the world are back to play for this very championship, the World Baseball Classic.

Batting Order

This roster did not change much. 2 new faces are around, but in theory, only 1 of them is really 'new'. Francis Boullion, the former star for St-Simeon, and WBC 23-24 Player returns to the team, this time as batting coach. Alain Thompson, manager of Riviere St-Denis Rangers, comes to the club as pitching coach. This is a team with chemistry, experience, skill and youth. And really, really snazzy uniforms. Let's look at who Les Royales will face in the Group Stage of this tournament!

Group 8
#40 Skeckoa
#29 Estope
UR Myeeria
#3 Sicoutimont
UR New Texaco

If this tournament goes how it has the past 2 tournaments for us, we'll go 4 in a row, then drop 1, win 2, drop 1, and finish 2nd in the group. That might not happen this time. Manager Maurice Sorotane must plan on winning the group, but he'll face a tough challenge from Estope and the others to do that. He can't count on defeating everyone twice, and might look towards a split with high ranked side Estope or another good squad. Here is the schedule, with home stadium listed, as well as probable pitcher:

MD1-Sicoutimont vs Myeeria, @ Field PowerEternite, Fidel Sanchez
MD2-Bye
MD3-New Texaco vs Sicoutimont, Carlos Santa Maria
MD4-Sicoutimont vs Skeckoa, @ Field PowerEternite, Javier Perreois
MD5-Estope vs Sicoutimont, Yves Canton
MD6-Myeeria vs Sicoutimont, Trent Davis
MD7-Bye
MD8-Sicoutimont vs New Texaco, @ Field PowerEternite, Fidel Sanchez
MD9-Skeckoa vs Sicoutimont, Javier Perreios
MD10-Sicoutimont vs Estope, @ Field PowerEternite, Yves Canton

What's with the mix-up in the pitching order? That's just speculation, but we believe that it might be best to send Canton to the mound against the team he's 2-0 against, including an 11-0 perfect shut-out and 11-7 victory. The bye will help ace Fidel Sanchez to rest for his games, and will also ready him for the playoffs should Sicoutimont reach them. Tune back here to see full WBC27 coverage, from Radio-720 Baseball!

<Koyro> (Democratic Koyro) NSG senate is a glaring example of why no one in NSG should ever have a position of authority
The Emerald Dawn wrote:"Considering Officer Krupke was patently idiotic to charge these young men in the first place, we're dropping the charges in the interest of not wasting any more of the Judiciary's time with farcical charges brought by officers who require more training on basic legal principles."

The Search for a Nickname: Part I

The alarm went off much too early for Devon Clarke's liking. He rolled over in bed and saw that it was only 5:30. Why he had to wake up so early was still unknown to him; all he knew was that his teammate, closer Mark Flynn, had called a team meeting at 6:00 that morning, well before practice was to begin. He had not explained what was important enough to warrant such a ridiculously timed meeting, but Devon didn't dare miss it. He'd missed a team meeting a few weeks ago, and the next morning, he'd woken up to a face covered with a shaving cream pie, courtesy of Mark.

After taking a shower and slipping on a "Welsh Cowboy Baseball" T-shirt and some team practice shorts, Devon ventured out into the team hotel hallway. He was leaving at just the same time as catcher Bradley Lakeland, and so they stumbled sleepily into the elevator together, joining two older ladies who giggled slightly at the sight of the two, hair not brushed and eyes half closed. Once the elevator reached the first floor, the pair were glad to be free of the elders, who were probably going to play bingo or something, thought Devon.

It was 5:58 when they arrived in the banquet room which had served as team headquarters for the last few days. They were among the last to arrive; only starter Ethan Chalmers and backup outfielder Neil Harper came in later. At 6:00 precisely, Mark Flynn walked up to the stage and surveyed the room.

"Good morning, team. How's it going?"

He received a mixture of groans and mumbled "good mornings". His face turned up slightly into a subtle smile, his eyes flickering with the joy of inflicting so much pain and discomfort on his teammates.

"Anyway, team, as you know, we leave tomorrow for Zwangzug, the number one team in the world. It's going to be a tough game. We all know that. Especially considering it's our first game ever. But that's not why we're all here."

Just then, the banquet room door opened and in walked pitching coach Bradley Vernard, who was in his late sixties and walked with a limp. He looked around at the players and then stumbled to the back of the room, where he took a seat and reclined. Mark snapped his fingers to get the attention of the team again.

"As I was saying, we all know how tough a WBC this is going to be. I don't think we expect to go all the way. If we make the playoffs, that would be awesome. But I think that there's something we can come away from this tournament with: a nickname."

The room exploded in laughter. Devon Clarke almost fell out of his chair, he struggled to breathe between laughs. Franklin Anderson, the only southpaw in the starting rotation called out to Mark: "Why are we really missing sleep?"

Mark raised his hands: "You can't laugh yet, guys. Think about it. New Montreal States, #4 in the world, is the Reformed Expos. #9 Equestrian States, the pony country, is the Phoenixes. #2 Milchama, the Warriors. And of course, Zwangzug, who we will of course be playing, and is the best team in the world, is the Zebras. These teams all have nicknames."

Franklin made another snide comment from his seat: "But we're not a top-10 team, are we now, Markie?" His teammates enjoyed another long laugh.

"Sangti is only 37th in the world, and they're the Indios. What I'm saying, is that we need a nickname. It would help us identify ourselves. And plus, we could get cooler shirts, caps, and jerseys. You know we like those."

"So all I'm asking you to do is over the next few days, begin thinking about what makes our team unique. Our attributes, our characteristics, you know what I'm talking about. Just keep thinking about it. That's all I'm asking."

Just then, manager Karl Schelner walked in.

"Hey! You guys are supposed to be either sleeping or eating! Let's get to it!"

The New Texaco Oilers play their first game against Estope, a team ranked #29 in the World Rankings and the weakest of the second seeds in the terms of ranking power. That being said, they are strong on pitching and defense and don't yield many runs. Clay Bubela will be pitching for the Oilers against Estope's Eric Almanza in what should be a pitcher's duel. Why is New Texaco called the Oilers? Well, there is a lot of oil in the land of New Texaco to the point our currency is the oil drum. In reality, it's a coin based currency redeemable for barrels of oil with the gold-plated oil drum coin currently worth $107 per 1 oil drum coin. A silver colored oil drum coin is worth $1.07, but that being said the currency is redeemable for oil and explains the name of the team as well.

REFORMED EXPOS BEGIN TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST SANGTI AND A PACK OF CIPHERS

Small groups, short qualifiers will leave little margin for error

VALDEMONT - The Reformed Expos' WBC title defense has gotten underway in earnest as manager Lionel Dayton announced the final roster for WBC 26, and began a weeklong mini-camp in Valdemont leading up to the home opener against newcomers Ukrainya at the Grand Stade. Although bookkeepers and sportswriters alike have les Expos as overwhelming favorites to advance, the gap between world-class teams and bottom-dwellers is smaller in baseball than in any other sport known to man (and elves, and horses, and gelatinous cubes, and so on and so forth.) Qualification is only eight games long, and a protracted slump - or, really, any kind of slump at all - will put an early end to the Reformed Expos' chance of keeping the 'States at the pinnacle of international baseball.

Our highly trained team of professional scouts temporarily turned freelance writers toured the training camps of the four other nations in Group 6. Here are their reports:

UR Kingdom of Costa Luna
UR Ukrainya

Part of the WBC's raison d'être is to bring the glories of baseball to parts of the multiverse where "baseball" is something that enlisted men kick around when their officers aren't looking. On behalf of the New Montreal States, we'd like to welcome these two new entrants to the World Baseball Classic. Your first-ever tournament will be some tough sledding, to be sure. But you can't predict baseball, and if your starting pitchers' lucky underwear really is as effective as he thinks it is, you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife controlling a game against a team that, on paper, ought to have driven your team into the dirt and your manager into the bottle. And before your fans can ask themselves "well, how did we get here?" you'll have pulled the kind of once-in-a-lifetime upset that marks your nation as a band of up-and-comers with a bright future ahead of them.

We really hope you'll do this against Sangti or the Serbian Empire, though. Getting four wins against these two nations will be essential to the Reformed Expos's chances of advancing out of the group stage. A loss to either of these teams ought to leave Lionel Dayton and his team saying to themselves: "My God, what have we done?"

#37 Sangti

Los Indios are possibly the most underrated side in the tournament, and their #37 ranking is the second most confusing result thrown out by the system. (The first, of course, is the idea that Milchama and Sicoutimont are somehow ranked ahead of us, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.)

Although they were swept by the Reformed Expos during a best-of-three play-in round during WBC 26, they showed strong form during qualification, surviving a tough group highlighted by Milchama and Ko-oren, who went on to the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Anyway, these guys will probably squeak by The Serbian Empire for a playoff spot, and maybe get the respect they're due from the powers that be in this game.

#28 The Serbian Empire

These guys haven't even released a full roster yet - anxiety problems? Clever tactic? Perhaps their team is mainly composed of androids who are programmed to focus entirely on baseball to the exclusion of all else, including self-awareness and individualism.

On the other hand, they made it to the playoffs in WBC 26, knocking off Thatius before falling short against Milchama. And the last team to enter the WBC ranked #28 won the whole thing, so these guys might just be dangerous after all.

All things considered, the Reformed Expos should advance, unless the demons of small sample size doom them to what would be a truly embarrassing early exit.

Remember the only time the Classic was co-hosted before?
By Rachel Sharper, Concord Heights Times

There are a couple similarities between the upcoming Classic and a classic that is dear to the heart of Cassadagans. The upcoming Classic, the 27th, will be only the second time that the competition is co-hosted by two nations. Like that past time, one of them, Saintland, is a young nation (to the baseball world) that has made an immediate impression on the sporting world with arrogant players, not just in baseball, but in all sports. The other, Maklohi Vai, is a more respected and trusted nation, for all. Like last time, World Baseball Classic 16, Cassadaigua hopes to win the championship when all is said and done. Unfortunately, this is where the similarities end.

Leading up to WBC 16, Cassadaigua was among the top nations in the world. That is not anywhere close to being the case this time, and the realistic goals for the team will likely top off at “maybe advancing to the second round of the playoffs”. The Dagans are ranked somewhere in the 40's right now. In WBC 16, there were hardly 40-teams in the rankings, to begin with. This is, of course, a testament to the rise of the World Baseball Classic, and as we also get ready for a couple other major competitions to begin pretty soon, the Classic gets more and more difficult to win, and puts a better distinction on what we were able to do in the past. There are great memories of WBC 16 here, and that’s a good thing, because it will be a while before we get close to doing what we did there, again.

The competition being co-hosted by Saintland is very interesting, given the deep mutual [strike]hatred[/stride] distrust between the cultural lifestyles of our nations. If you ask around the locker room, most players will likely tell you that they are very motivated to advance to Saintland for the playoffs, while Queen Cassie and members of the Royal Government would probably prefer a boycott of going there and preference to go to Maklohi Vai instead. Cassadagans know Maklohi Vai pretty well lately from college competitions as Dagan schools have gone to that nation in hockey and basketball and have had respectable if not championship-winning performances. The team would be treated well there, and not have to worry about any redemption from Saintland fans for our treatment of their players in the last Classic, but you just have the feeling that the players themselves would love to bring it on!

It’s going to be a tough road to make the playoffs. Hopefully the Cassadagan media is up to the challenge!

Oh, and the players too.

Wolfpack Gears up for WBC
by Marc Baker, International Sports Correspondent, Lupinia Times

The New Wolfopolis Wolfpack is getting ready for their first-ever international baseball tournament, World Baseball Classic 27. They were put into a group which includes 3 top-50 teams, #13 Free South Califas, #22 Vaugania, and #43 Cassadaigua, and an unranked team, Hardwinter. The Wolfpack is also unranked, (expected since this is their first WBC), so advancing past group play will be a challenge. Their first game will be on Wednesday, August 21st at Hardwinter. Righthander Allen Marsh will be the starter for the Wolfpack.

"I'm excited for the game," says Marsh. "I don't know much about the Hardwinter squad, but they are not to be taken lightly. This is definitely the most challenging point in my career so far, but it'll be fun."

"Our team is young," comments manager Javier Best, "but they know what they're doing. I have faith in them. Allen will pitch well, as he always does. He's fired up. Katsu [team captain Katsunori Matsuoka] has looked great in practice and couldn't be more ready for Wednesday. His leadership will shine this month, and who knows where it may take us."

You can watch Wednesday's game, along with all Wolfpack games in the WBC, on NWSN. Pregame starts 30 minutes prior to first pitch.

Serbian Empire Team Denies Being Cyphers and Group Play Projections

The incomplete roster is still an issue of the toilet smashing incident awhile back. That was when the team went on a massive losing streak at the end of the Group Play stage in the WBC 25 tournament. Since then, the manager has kept the player identities as secret as possible thanks to Imperial Serbian tabloids loving such dramatic incidents from the national sporting teams. These "unnamed" players are players who played in WBC 25, rakija is still banned from the clubhouse as the popular alcoholic beverage had a large role in the shameful vandalism incident a couple tournaments ago, and there is no robots in sight. In a few more tournaments, we might be able to put the incident behind us and return to a fully named roster.

That being said now we move on to the Group 6 predictions

1. New Montreal States, as the top seed in the rankings and the best team in the group it is safe to say they can produce 5 wins at minimum and possibly win all the games in group play.

2. (tie) Sangti and the Serbian Empire, both of these teams are rather close in ranking (#37 and #28) to the point that game play against the new entries and New Montreal States might determine who advances and who does not. Both teams can be counted on to be at able to win at least 3 games and possibly 6 or 7 games in group play.

4. Costa Luna, they have some talent in other tournaments and are a dark horse to possibly make it into the playoffs if one of the three above fall into a prolonged slump. 2 wins at minimum and possibly 5 wins. 5 wins might be enough to advance into the next round if they keep it close against the likes of New Montreal States, Sangti, and the Serbian Empire with blow outs against Ukrainya.

5. Ukrainya, they'll be lucky to win three games in this tournament. The inevitable cellar dweller of this group or so I expect.

"Dammit, Garcia!"

Nova Anglicana manager Graig Lowman looked on as pitching coach Charley Battaglia stepped up to the young righthander Justin Garcia. The catcher, Josh Heckman, rose in concern and walked over as well.

"You're flying open! You've got a great arm, kid, but it's not what's doing the work! It's all about torque! Your hips. Don't get ahead of yourself and try to sling it in there. Stay balanced, stay closed and that fastball of yours will be jumping."

The instruction had been for the pitcher, but Lowman's eyes were trained on the catcher as he squatted down. The kid was a natural talent, but could he really trust his staff to a young catcher like that? Charley called all the pitches right now. Lowman preferred letting his catchers call the game, but Heckman wasn't ready and he wasn't about to give the pitchers free rein.

He turned his eyes to home plate, where backup catcher Raleigh Hightower stepped into one and lined it off the wall in right. He had toyed with the idea of starting Hightower over Heckman for stability's sake, but had quickly scrapped it. Every young player needed confidence, but especially reserved, sensitive kids like Heckman. It wouldn't do him any good to be sitting on the bench.

Elsewhere, Novak, Fletcher, and Cunningham were flipping four balls at once to each other and ragging on each other when somebody dropped one. Now there were some players who didn't lack confidence. He only hoped their youth wouldn't show on the world stage. The Minister of Sport had made it very clear to him:

"I understand this is our first appearance at such a high-profile event. Nonetheless, failure or lack of effort will not be tolerated. You've got to snatch a couple wins to keep the people's spirits up. It'll be up to you to control the youngsters and manage the veterans."

He snorted. Those bureaucrats didn't know the first thing about managing a club. The players would play their game and he'd handle 'em the way he wanted to.

********Interlude***********

In his hotel room, Graig Lowman pored over the scouting reports. His stomach twinged and he reached for the almost-empty bottle of Smith's Antacid Tablets. "Just one and you're right as rain!" it promised. He sighed. The task before his club seemed impossible. Play host to world #6 Maklohi Vai in your first ever WBC game. There would be 30,000 screaming fans out there, all expecting the impossible. Whatever illusions the public were under, Lowman was not. How could his home-grown team from a small country with no sports history defeat the powerhouse Lumai, especially tangling with a tough lefty in Moi and a legendary slugger in Mae'ao, who had an incomprehensible 102 WBC home runs?

He bowed his head. He'd never been one for religion, even though the rest of the country was nuts about it. The baseball gods had always been enough for him, but there was no harm in hedging your bets.

"Hey God, it's me, Graig. I know I haven't read my Bible as much as you think I should, but there's one story I do remember. David and Goliath. A little kid beating a giant. Lord, that's what we're up against tomorrow. So, if you could see fit to have Elmer throw little sling stones out there tomorrow, and give Josh some confidence, and dammit--oh, sorry, sir, I mean, don't have Novak make any bonehead plays trying to throw out a runner from the outfield, that'd be great. I'll stop in to church on Sunday, I promise. Heck, I'll even give my bonus money to charity if we make the round of 24. Anyway, I hope you're listening. Amen."

He clicked off the light. With God's help or without it, they were in for a tough day tomorrow.

Group 10 Preview

Group 10

UR Britonisea
#25 The Sova Empire
UR Gregoryisgodistan
#10 Western Cuba
#39 West Guiana

The Sova Empire goes into it's 3rd Classic as the 2nd seed in their group, 25th overall. This team had so much growth in WBC's 25 and 26, and now a totally new team is representing the Empire. They show great potential, but can they keep up the meteoric rise from the last 2 Classics? Our team of newbies experts thinks they can. Let's take a look at the individual teams, top down.

Britonsea
This nation is virtually unheard of in the sporting world, as this is their first WBC. No rank, and also no roster with group play starting tomorrow. Most likely, they will eke out a win or 2, but will be the expected bottom-feeders of the group.

The Sova Empire
Last WBC, they featured in group 1, and out of nowhere stunned Yesopalitha and Michael VII to win the group and advance. A sweep by eventual 2nd place team Sicoutimont in the Round of 16 stifled further advancement. If a lower ranked TSE can take out the formerly 6th ranked Yesopalitha, then maybe they can take the group this time too. 8-0 is unrealistic, but 5-3 or 6-2 is almost expected.

Gregoryisgodistan
This nation will be exciting to watch. While they have no rank in the WBC, they have won the most recent International Baseball Slam over group-mates The Sova Empire. They are a passionate team, not unlike TSE from WBC25. TSE struggled and got several upsets as an unranked team. Gregoryisgodistan can do the same. Depending on the strength of West Cuba and Guiana, they might qualify, but they would need help.

Western Cuba
This team has been in collapse mode ever since winning WBC24. They were first ranked by a long ways for a long time, and have been in freefall for the past 2 tournaments. THRILLEDGE has had the same fate against TSE (high ranked team in freefall utterly collapsing). They are rosterless with MD1 coming shortly. Still, expect experience to hold over the unranked teams. 3-5 wins is likely.

West Guiana
Ladies and gentlemen, the wild card of the group. Reasonable ranking, but no roster. They might be upset by Gregoryisgodistan or maybe even Britonsea if they aren't terribly active. They could be a .500 team, or they could do great things. Again, 3-5 wins is likely.

Final table predictions:

1. The Sova Empire, 6-2
2. Gregoryisgodistan, 5-3
3. Western Cuba, 4-4
4. West Guiana, 4-4
5. Britonsea, 1-7

Now, TSE's schedule and expected results:

1. @ West Guiana
W 5-4
2. Britonsea
W 7-2
3. @ Gregoryisgodistan
L 1-2 (12 innings)
4. Western Cuba
L 0-6
5. West Guiana
W 8-3
6. @Britonsea
W 10-1
7. Gregoryisgodistan
W 3-1
8. @Western Cuba
W 5-2

Allinlia Prepares for 4th WBC

Last season's surprising playoff underdogs confident as they prepare to face off against Taeshan and the rest of Group 9

Still pumped from their amazing success in the playoffs at Cassadaigua last WBC cycle, the Allinlian team roster remains mostly unchanged except for a newfound bit of swagger as they find themselves #18 in the WBC rankings and are widely considered a favorite to make the playoffs and predicted to finish 2nd or 1st in their group, a position that Allinlia has never found themselves in before. There certainly is alot of hype surronding this team, both internationally and domestically as evidenced by the team selecting the massive Triton Stadium in the capital city of Pargo to host the team's home matches this season as interest in the team has shot up after their quarterfinal finish and a venue with greater capacity was needed.

Group 9 is considered by Allinlian news networks to be a rather weak group, at least compared to the "group of death" they found themselves in last WBC, here is our breakdown of the teams that will be battling it out in group 9, in order of their pre-group stage international rankings:

#12 Taeshan

Taeshan has been a WBC staple for years now. They won it all before but that was awhile ago, while Taeshan always seems to be among the elite of the competition, the last few years have seen somewhat lackluster efforts from what was once one of the very best teams, with last season being particularly mediocre though they did manage to make the playoffs again, something that they have consistently managed like clockwork. It will be interesting to see how they fare in a group devoid of any other team with an elite WBC pedigree but with a couple dangerous up and comers who could wallop the proud veterans if they find themselves trying to get away with coasting until the playoffs once more.

#18 Allinlia

The Allinlians have always been boastful but they have also always struggled in the group stage of the WBC, leading many to think that the empire was just full of hot air. International opinion of Allinlia seems to be changing after the last WBC. They finished a paltry 6-4 in an extremely competitive group but made noise in the playoffs as they knocked out powerhouse teams Free South Califas and Karditan before eventually making the quarterfinals where they fell to this WBC's #1 ranked team, Zwangzug. Allinlia is seen as a favorite to get out of this group alive but they will have their hands full when dealing with Taeshan, a top-tier team they have never played before but seems to be moving downward while Allinlia is moving up. Their upcoming match against the #12 team could speak volumes as to whether Allinlia is indeed all hype and no substance this WBC.

#50 The Fair Republic

The Toucans have done nothing but struggle and struggle mightily since they entered the WBC two cycles ago. This season, unfortunately, does not look to be much different, at least if early scouting is to be relied on. (as it rarely is) Though not considered much of a threat to Taeshan or Allinlia by media experts, this could be the perfect time for a resurgence from the Fair Republic, with 2 untested unranked teams, an Allinlian team that has never dominated any group it was in, and a Taeshan team that could be on the decline, this group draw represents the best chance the Toucans have ever had for some respectability, they will be looking to surprise people this cycle.

(unranked) Southwick

You never know what to expect from the unranked squads, but early reports indicate that Southwick may be the new team to watch, reports surrounding this team are very positive and they are looking good according to the scouts. The team seems professional and extremely dedicated. Despite being unranked the team seems fully prepared for the rigors of a WBC campaign. Southwick is looking like an early contender for best new team and may just be a darkhorse to steal a playoff spot away from the veterans should teams choose to underestimate them.

(unranked) Tarrigan

the other unranked team, it is very difficult for our experts to predict just how well or poorly Tarrigan will do, though our crew does not seem to be as excited about them as they are about Southwick, Tarrigan looks pretty dang good coming in (for an unranked team). We will just have to wait and see how they do but with a little luck they might find themselves ahead of Southwick and maybe The Fair Republic as well. The playoffs, however, could be a long shot.

Our Prediction (sure to be proven wrong):

1. Taeshan 6-2
2. Allinlia 6-2
3. Southwick 3-5
4. Fair Republic 2-6
5. Tarrigan 2-6

Joe McKenzie stared at an empty lineup card on his spartan table in his spartan office. A signed picture of the mighty Jeanne Castor-Markos hung on the wall. On his desk lay a bottle of gatorade, a laptop, and the lineup card. McKenzie kept in touch with advanced statistics, although in his core he was a simple baseball man who still believed in bunting to move the runners over.
McKenzie gave up trying to get that stats edge. There was nothing wrong with a lineup of Bradley, Danks, Cameron, Mills, and company. He just wished he could call up a few more guys from the U-21 team without the world nagging about it. The din of the phone was bad enough when he brought up obvious talent Trevor Matthews. If he tried to bring up Drew Gilson or Jack Marquez, lesser but still great talents, he'd be ridiculed. After all, the current core of the team wasn't really old yet.
It was hopeless. He walked outside.
McKenzie used to pitch, so his natural first stop was the practice mounds. Four pitchers threw at a time. Starting catcher Bryant Moreno, backup and DH Keith Dawson, and bullpen catchers Don George and Jack Aaron caught them.

The current pitchers were ex-Drew Gilson Leo Davis, the 23-year-old "Kid with the Golden Arm"; newly converted starter Rick Jackson, and middle relievers Aaron Raymond and Evan Daye.

"Nice job, Davis. Don't go for triples yet." Davis had suffered a recent arm injury that ticked down his fastballs to 95 from 97. His cutters dropped to 91, a speed some pitchers desired on their fastballs.

A few U-21 and B-Team guys watched. Some threw.

McKenzie watched the wild David Mendello throw. Mendello had thrown eight innings with the team and walked nine. But his stuff was electric. But the guy didn't even miss consistently.

Mendello threw a pair in the dirt. Sliders, 86, nasty.

McKenzie trained his eyes on the radar gun. 95, nice.

Chris Evans had walked out of the room.
"Joe!"
THWOCK!
And so, Chris Evans was forced into the slot of manager with McKenzie in ER.

New Edom, officially known as the Allied States of New Edom, is a nation that was once part of the Cornellian Empire. For the last 15 years it has struggled with civil war for territorial, religious and political reasons. A number of different cultures are blended together within it which have till recently been dominated entirely by the Semitic Baran people.

New Edom is a very religious nation, overwhelmingly Christian, with two predominant churches having influence over the government and laws: the New Edomite Apostolic Church and the End Times Church.

The official languages are English and Baran, (a Semitic language related to Hebrew) German, Dawarf, Elwe and Haranese (a sub-dialect of Baran) as well as a variety of indigenous languages from Dahamy and Dengali are also spoken. The general ethnicities are Middle Eastern, Anglo-Saxon, Gaelic, and African.

Casual nudity and body painting are common in the Allied States, for reasons that are religious as well as cultural.

It is also known as being one of the few nations in the world with a surviving population of Miocene Epoch mammals and birds such as Terror Birds, also known as Griffons in New Edom.

Fineberg, National Capital
Ethnarch: Jacob Onam (Mayor)
Population: 2 million
Location: Southeast central coast, East Bara Province
Basic Description: Fineberg is a fairly affluent city, crime is low and it is beautiful with a warm climate and wide boulevards, lots of parks, cares, theater, and a splendid zoo with exotic animals seen in few other places in the world outside of Inutoland. It is a city known for handsome golf courses, a nearby resort and casino, and a certain discreet sense of decadence. A large section of the city is industrial ports as well. While it was the focus of part of the 2nd New Edomite Civil War a year ago, it is fully rebuilt.

The National Olympic Stadium

Is a multi purpose concrete and steel construction which is used for soccer and for track and field events as well as baseball. It holds up to 80,000 people, and has concession stands which serve such tasty foods as falafel or chicken sandwiches, roasted nuts, potato chips, stuffed vine leaves, cookies, popcorn, soft drinks, fizzy water and bottled water.

There is also a restaurant with a glass viewing panel where first class guests can dine on lobster, steak, grilled swordfish and other dainties while watching the game. Large television screens at four points of the compass enable fans to see all angles of the game.

This even will be the first international event played in the stadium, originally built in hopes of an Olympic bid during the reign of King Mark the First.

Maritime Field, Seaddle, Karditan
Alitaba vs Cassadaigua, Northwestern Final, Copa Rushmori de Beisbol
Cassadigua leads series 1-0.

As Diego watched his team trailing 1-3 to the World Baseball Classic 26 hosts Cassadaigua at the bottom of the eighth, something came up in his mind. "If we were able to beat Saugeais and coming that far, then should we enter the Classic?" The answer came in the last two innings.

With Marcelo Anagolay pitching in the bottom of the eighth, his day was undone by errors from his teammates. After a homer by Dato at the top of first, the Mandaragat conceded two runs at the bottom of the second, fourth and fifth innings, to trail 1-3. His first set of pitches were fine, striking the Cassadaiguan batter out, but the next set proved to be too much for him. He threw a curveball to his right, only for the Cassadaiguan at bat to hit it at the sweet spot, enough to score a homer that sank Alitaba. One further run was scored at the inning, and it was suddenly 1-5.

The batters of Mandaragat had a chance to level the match with the bases loaded at the top of the ninth, and two outs, but the Cassadaiguan closer forced Mutya Amapola to strike the ball to a flyout, thus ending Alitaba's hopes of forcing Game 3. Diego had the answer: "We will enter the classic."

---

Months have passed, and Alitaba had a new manager. Diego was still there as coach, but Dato Masikhil Silabay was their new manager. Unlike the Copa squad where there were no relief pitchers, the Classic squad got five new relief pitchers, plus two starters from the squad that actually did not play because Alitaba did not reach the championship series.

As for their opponents, the squad will look to defy the odds and advance to the playoffs in Maklohi Vai and Saintland. The roadblocks? New Edom, Super-Llamaland, Cyborg Holland and the ninth ranked team in the world, Equestrian States. Of course, the teams to watch out here are the Pheonixes and the Tigers, but never count out Cyborg Holland or New Edom.

But to start the campaign right, they need to beat the Diatrymas at the National Olympic Stadium in Fineberg, New Edom. After all, it is the Mandaragat's debut in the world stage, and fans will surely flock the stadium for this one. Nothing is known yet about the Diatrymas, except a hosting bid that was turned down because of some problems with their bid. But nonetheless, this team looks tough, so for the Mandaragat, they better be prepared or they will lose ground.

Tonight, it starts.

Most of the team knew each other before hand, as they had all played with or against each other on the college circuit and had formed a friendship during tryouts. The strongest out of these of RHP Nick Shawn, LF Jared Vultan and Catcher Lin Zhouli. They were called "The Bros" for their immature antics and their close friendship with each other. They had agreed to share a hotel room, which struck fears for the players in the hotel rooms adjacent. For all of the Group Stage, I will cover their adventures during the World Baseball Classic.

Arriving Into Saintland

As they got off the plane, holding their stuff, Nick Shawn and Jared Vultan got off at the same time. They were waiting on their third part to get off the plane. Shawn and Vultan were dressed in their classiest clothes, with their bags and bats over their shoulders. Shawn had his designer shades on and was tapping his 500 NSD loafers on the ground, growing impatient. After waiting seven minutes (it felt like thirty to him), he began to get annoyed.

"Where in the hell is Lin?" He pouted, before gaining his composure. "The rest of the team is waiting!" He shouted into the plane, hoping for a response from Lin, but he was instead met with Lin patting him on the back, scaring him. His grip was a prankful one, meant to scare the hell out of Shawn, and it had work. He jumped a foot in the air before pushing him off. Vultan was laughing so hard that it seemed like he collapsed onto the floor in uproaring laughter. He recovered soon, but his laughter had not subsided until Shawn punched him lightly.

"Ok, children." Shawn said sarcastically. "We had better get a Five-Star Hotel, or else the consequences. Did anyone hear of what the manager booked?" They began to walk around, waiting for a limo or something. Lin answered "They got us the best money could buy."

"They better have." Vultan said. "We're international athletes. International athletes that have come in last place in both of our previous appearances, but still international athletes!"

In the beginning, there was The One. Then, The One started The Harvest, and the rest were born.
Names, there were none. Digits were assigned to them, ten different ones in a row, providing way more than enough possibilities that The One wouldn't have to worry about duplicates for a long time. The number 1111111111 He claimed for himself, and the rest he gave out, in no particular order, at least not any that the rest of them knew.
Odd numbers mean female, even numbers mean male... And perhaps there's an order to the madness as far as age and personality are concerned...
But ordered they all are, very submissive, very calm, almost... robotic? Is that a way to describe them? Perhaps. They just... They're alive, but they act like they just do what they are told. There is no mischievousness. There is no spark, it's almost like looking at a big gray mass slowly creeping toward you. They just...
For some reason that only The One knows, He's sent a few of them out to play sports. They will start with baseball, of which there is actually a league, there being ten teams that picked a language of the rest of the world to take a team name off of. And now, they will face the rest of the world, for whatever purpose only The One knows...
I don't even think that winning or losing is the goal. Perhaps it's the exposure of these... beings... to the rest of the world that matters after all. For, as previously stated, they have no life. They look different, but they all act the same. It's almost as if...
Are they all clones of The One? That can't be; The One is a man. How could he have made a female version...
And why is it that there are no babies in Myeeria at all? Everyone is between 17 and 40; all 2 million that make up Myeeria's population. None has died, not that they know themselves; none has been born, not that they know themselves; and the only reason they know that they are as old as they are? Because they have been told so.
Birthdays? What's that? None of them remembers when they were born. To them, they have had all the rest of each other for as long as they can remember, together. There's no need to introduce themselves to each other; everyone knows whom everyone is, everyone can distinguish between everyone else, there are no secrets.
Does this not mean that such a team should do well in sports? If their minds are all connected? Well, the problem is, spontaneity does work wonders. If there ever existed a game where technique was king, Myeeria would almost win by default. But a bit of randomness does help...
Is that what The One is wanting out of them? To explore?
Is He ready to open such a Pandora's Box?
There's more on the line than is known when Myeeria steps out on the baseball pitch for the first time. It's the beginning of something new. As one learns, the rest learns by default. The mind meld is ever present, across distance light years away.
What one learns, the others learn, and what one experiences, the others learn as well...
And at the same time, it's all being learned by The One, ever present, ever vigilant, ever active...
What does it mean to be a Myeerian?
The world is about to find out.
