New Montreal States Reformed Expos Roster
Manager: Lionel Dayton
Home games are played WITH the DH

+2 mod; there's still more good hitting than good pitching in this group

Winning the 26th WBC turned the Reformed Expos into national heroes after years of being second bananas to the National and Montréalais Leagues. Longsuffering manager Lionel Dayton has been overwhelmed by top prospects and established stars looking for a spot on the roster, a change of pace from the days when teams would routinely discourage their best players from suiting up for the national team. Superstars and blue-chip prospects that would have been handed roster spots on a silver platter for previous classics are at home on their couches, and Dayton has brought back a roster that is even more loaded than its' predecessors, at least on paper. That said, the most important lesson learned from the Reformed Expos' signal triumph in the last WBC is that anyone can win, as long as they catch a few breaks and have a well-stocked bullpen.

Injuries, age, and some tough decisions by Dayton have lead to a fairly high amount of turnover from the roster that won it all three years ago. Some familiar faces remain, though: Ephraim Zimbalist, Jr., who parlayed his MVP performance for the Reformed Expos (and a dominant season right afterwards) into 115 million oz. from the Moncton Sands Griffins. Jean-Charles St-Anton, Greg Hoagland and Greg George also return from the WBC 26 starting lineup. Roland Tessier, who was batting .400 as late as mid-August of last season before finishing at .374, and Clayton McMurdo-Labonté's back-to-back 42 HR seasons highlight the new additions to the lineup.

The pitching staff has undergone a more through overhaul, with Ken McDougall - who came through in the clutch against Milchama, Western Cuba and in the finals against Sicoutimont. Lon Bentwell and Nabil Mansour are both established aces, while 21-year-old blue-chipper André Cormier routinely hits 98 on the radar gun but still has a few control problems to shake out. A completely new bullpen, meanwhile, is headed by beanpole-thin Patrice Pommier, whose shock of ginger hair, thrash-metal intro and thousands of freckles have left impressions on just about every batter of note in the Montréalais League.

WBC27 Group One Preview!

Postby Super-Llamaland » Sat Aug 17, 2013 1:03 pm

#34 Cyborg Holland
UR Alitaba
#20 Super-Llamaland
#9 Equestrian States
UR New Edom

This year, we were fifth in Pot 2. Pot 2 supermacy, here we come!

Breaking Down Each and Every Team:

Equestrian States
Every Tiger fan remembers when Equestrian States took the Tigers down in two games to advance to the Round of Sixteen. Oh, the suffering! But this year, we have an easy chance at revenge. Can the Tigers win the group stage? As of today, it's the Equestrian States' Group to Lose.
Super-Llamaland
Second behind new #1 Zwangzug last year and ahead of #18 Allinlia on the final day. The Tigers aren't too different from last year, and the playoffs beckon!
Cyborg Holland

Remember WBC23, when the upstart Tigers routed Cyborg Holland 13-5 on the final day to clinch third place in a group of six? Well, now the Tigers find themselves in the same group as the C.H squad.

New Edom

Altiaba

The two unranked teams in the group. Both have their share of star players, but they have an uphill climb rank-wise that can only be negated by RP'ing and Luck.

WBC 27 MD 1 Preview
Southwick vs The Fair Republic

A novice on the WBC scene, the Candlemakers will lead off WBC 27 versus 50th-ranked The Fair Republic. Pitching for Southwick in the game will be Woodrow Paul, the twenty-four year old southpaw from the capital city. Paul is the only five-pitch player on the Southwick staff and he uses all five of those pitches on the mound. Paul is mostly a groundball pitcher, relying heavily on his 12-to-6 curveball, sinker, and two-seam fastball. He hits about 97 mph on his two-seamer and 93 mph on his sinker. In addition, he possesses a screwball that is very difficult for lefties to hit. And, he uses his changeup as a change-of-pace pitch. Paul will be a strong force in the mound for this game.

Manager Ernest Grant has not released the starting lineup yet, but we have a pretty good idea of what we will see. We expect Curtis Chandler to bat leadoff and play in center field. Chandler is a fast hitter who can hit for average, but has very little power in his bat. He is an above-average fielder, but has some trouble with his arm. James Gordon will bat second. A better fielder than hitter, Gordon is still good at putting the bat on the ball. He is also an expert bunter and is able to move Chandler ahead on the basepaths. Batting third is rightfielder Alan Williams. The best pure hitter on the team, Williams also has a very good eye and walks a lot. Not scared to get hit, he crowds the plate and is able to hit the outside pitch to the opposite field. Williams is a pretty good fielder, but is sometimes replaced late in games by Noah Harvey.

Batting cleanup will be Adrian Clark, the first baseman. Clark is a very good fielder and has the most power on the team. He sometimes struggles with strikeouts and if he gets into a slump, he can get stuck there for a long time. However, he can be counted on for clutch hits and can hit the ball a long way. Following him is left fielder Andres Campbell. Speedy, Campbell is close to a four-tool player. He has some power and can get his bat on the ball. He is a very good fielder, as are most players on the team. Batting after Campbell is third baseman Darin Curry. The son of a local politician, Curry is very intelligent and even-tempered. He has some power and is a pretty good power, but his real prowess is in the field. Curry's range stretches from the foul line to the hole and he has been known to throw runners out from shallow left field. Because of this, he is able to play very deep on the infield.

Seventh in the lineup is Marcos Holloway, the shortstop. Holloway is a fast slap hitter who can get the ball into the outfield. He can also beat out infield singles and is a good bunter. Holloway steals a lot of bases and can bat leadoff if Chandler is struggling or out of the lineup. He too is a very good fielder. Eighth is Alex Hill. Normally, Marty Dunn would be the catcher, but as Toucans starter Buck Natters is a left-hander, Hill will play in Dunn's place. Hill is a better hitter than Dunn, but is a weak fielder and pitchers sometimes get frustrated with him. If Southwick takes the lead, he will be replaced by Dunn quickly. Batting ninth, as Southwick is the home team, Paul is a pretty weak hitter. He can be counted on for a sacrifice bunt and the occasional single, but he strikes out a lot. Jared French and Ronnie Gomez will be the main pinch-hitters on the Southwick bench.

The Candlemakers and the Toucans are very similar teams. Both teams are built on "small ball". The Fair Republic is led by captain/catcher Bucky Eskers and rightfielder Henry Brando. Paul will have to be careful when pitching to the middle of the TFR lineup especially, as Wilson, Brando, and Payton can all hurt you with the longball. TFR pitcher Buck Natters is a twenty-five year old southpaw. Teams were hard-pressed to score runs against him in the FRBL last year (25-2 with a 2.45 ERA), so it will be interesting to see how the inexperienced Candlemaker lineup fares against him.

Player to Watch: Alan Williams, RF

Image
Player card with a picture of Williams from his college days.

The best pure hitter in the Candlemaker lineup, Williams is our player to watch for the MD1 game vs The Fair Republic Toucans. In the tune-up game versus the Southwick U-21 team, Williams was the player of the game for the Candlemakers, going 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Williams also had one walk, displaying his notoriously good eye. Williams rarely strikes out and has very good bat speed. Like Southwick players are taught, he has a very level swing that is capable of stroking line drives to all sides of the field. Williams is also famous for crowding the plate, something that often results in him being hit by pitches. He is very durable though, and rarely misses games due to injuries. He has good speed for a right fielder and a pretty good arm. As he is only twenty-two years old, expect to see him in the Southwick lineup for some time forward.

Prediction: Southwick wins, 3-1.

New Wolfopolis Wolfpack - National Baseball Team
Acronym: NW
Style Modifier: -1
Captain: Katsunori Matsuoka

New Wolfopolis is proud to send a team to its first international baseball event. Obviously there will be some struggles, but the Wolfpack is a young, hungry team that is eager to set a foundation upon which they will grow in the future. The shining star of the team is captain Katsunori Matsuoka, the speedy centerfielder who excelled in his first two years in the Association of New Wolfopolis Baseball (ANWB). He will do whatever it takes to win, and he consistently hits for an average of at least .300. He is also a defensive sensation, committing just two errors in his entire professional career. The other major force in the Wolfpack lineup is leftfielder Andre Harding. Harding has had over 100 RBI for the past three seasons, and is also a threat on the basepaths. His defense is solid, but he has a tendency to get lazy. The Wolfpack also has a stellar rotation, led by right-hander Allen Marsh. He can consistently get his fastball at 95+ mph. He also has a nasty slider he uses as his "out-pitch", comparable only to Carlos Marmol's slider. With the combination of these two pitches, Marsh has kept his WHIP under 1.2. Next in the rotation is southpaw Leo Jacobson. Jacobson's fastball is of average speed, at about 92 mph, but his curveball fools righties and lefties alike. Jacobson can either be lights-out for the whole game/start, or he can start off well, but have one bad inning. His temper also sometimes gets the best of him, and may purposely hit a batter without reasoning. Closer Gabriel Hansen was not expecting to make the national team at all a few years back. He was not very good, blowing saves left and right, getting traded or cut or demoted. He struggled to keep a job in the big leagues. But last year, he came out of nowhere and converted 43/45 save opportunities and has continued to be stellar this year, earning a spot on the national team. The major difference between Hansen of old and the current Hansen is his newly-developed two-seam fastball, which batters just cannot figure out. Groups, Schedules, and Pots announced
Nagisa Furude, IPBL News

Earlier today, World Baseball Classic 27 co-host Saintland announced the groups, schedules, and pots for this tournament. As expected, Imota was listed as unranked, and was place in Pot 5, the lowest pot. Imota shares Group 5 with Ko-oren (ranked #5), Kinzar (#14), Aardenland (#32), and The Sovan Antithesis (unranked).

Team manager Ken Urofuchi, while modest about Imota's chances of victory, reiterated his view that the point of entering the WBC was not to win the tournament, but to give Imotan players a chance to experience a new level of competition.

“Imota’s paucity of contact with the outside world has enabled Imotan baseball to develop along unique lines,” he said in an interview, “but at the same time, I feel that the sport has stagnated, and that Imota’s players aren’t living up to their full potential. WBC 27 is only the first of Imotan baseball’s steps into a wider world.”

Manager Urofuchi was also asked about his decision to not include any of Imota’s female players on the national team. Female players make up just under 2% of Imota Professional Baseball players.

“Imota’s female players have made great gains since Usami Tsukino first took the field ten years ago,” he said, fondly remembering the former Archers reserve outfielder. “However, at this point in time, the best players in the sport are still men. But make no mistake: by the time WBC 28 rolls around, there will be a few women worthy of representing Imota in international baseball.”

Imota’s first game will be at home against Ko-oren, on Tuesday, August 20.

NOVA ANGLICANA TO PARTICIPATE IN WBC 27

Allen Talos, Londinium Courier

The Ministry of Sport announced today that the long-awaited first entry of Nova Anglicana into any major world sporting event ever would be in the 27th edition of the World Baseball Classic. When asked about Nova Anglicana's sporting debut, famously gruff manager Graig Lowman gave a veritable sermon by his standards: "We're excited and grateful to receive this honor. Our squad is tough, and hopefully we can advance. Good night and God bless."

The Lions have played several warmup games in preparation for this monumental event. They defeated the NABL All-Star squad, such as it was, 7-2 behind seven strong innings from Elmer Sutton. They also took 5 of 6 from various MiLB squads in the northeastern United States, showing the Lions' ability to compete on the world stage. (OOC: Nova Anglican baseball media stand in awe of the level of play in the United States. 5 of 6 against AA and AAA squads is nothing to brag about, but a good result.)

However, they will face a tough road, as they were drawn into Pool #7. They will face the co-hosts of WBC 27, Maklohi Vai, in their very first game. Ranked #6 in the world, the Lumai have a venerable history and will be an extremely difficult matchup. It will be up to ace Elmer Sutton to keep the team and the game under control. The Lions will receive a much-needed day off following their first game, and then will square off against world #15 Karditan, a tough test for young Felix Murphy, especially on the road. They then receive a bit of a break when they take on fellow unranked opponent Super Bwitain at home and then travel to face Kerblaekistan, ranked a mere 49th in the world. (OOC: [sarcasm][/sarcasm]) The second half of the schedule will feature flipped home/away sites. The 5-man rotation that Lowman is using will only afford Kip Fischer and Justin Garcia one start apiece, but I speculate that he wants to avoid wasting Sutton by throwing him for 2 turns against powerhouse Maklohi Vai. This will also allow Murphy to receive a cushy matchup against Super Bwitain.

This Lions team will lean heavily on its veteran bullpen and will look for offense from NABL MVP Roman Jennings and home-run king Kareem Al-Aniz. They are young up the middle, as the keystone combo of Chris Fletcher and Jarrod Novak have just 4 combined seasons of major-league experience. Elmer Sutton is a true ace at the top of the rotation, and Felix Murphy is the best young pitcher in the game, but Justin Garcia is an upside play right now, and Noah Hawkins and Kip Fischer are low-ceiling guys who won't record a lot of punchouts. Don't expect dominance from the starting rotation, and the bullpen may have to bail them out of more sticky situations than Lowman would like.

For this maiden voyage, a record of 3-5 would have to be taken as a great success and the best case scenario, as Maklohi Vai and Karditan are baseball giants and will almost certainly take both games. If the Lions could steal one from Kerblaekistan and sweep New Bwitain, they would be well on their way to establishing themselves on the international baseball scene. The important thing for this first team is to keep their composure and fight to the bitter end. We Nova Anglicans applaud the hard-fought loser nearly as much as we do the well-deserving winner, and as long as these Lions show maximum effort, we cannot ask for anything more. Stay tuned, Nova Anglican baseball fans; the Lions' roar is about to be heard on the world stage for the very first time.

Nickname: Lions
Acronym: NA
Style Modifier (if necessary): Not sure, lean towards aggressive, though, some real power in the lineup, but fairly balanced

Home Stadium: Archbishop Stadium in the Capital of Londinium (30,000)

Starting Rotation (order as given)
LHP #38 Elmer Sutton, 35 - veteran headlines rotation, fastball/changeup/screwball mostly
RHP #17 Felix Murphy, 24 - young up-and-comer, nearly unhittable slurve
LHP #44 Noah Hawkins, 28 - fastball tops out at 88, but makes up for it with tough cutter, slider, change, and curve
RHP #56 Kip Fischer, 30 - Fischer a power sinkerballer who pounds the zone, average secondary pitches
RHP #27 Justin Garcia, 25 - electric fastball comes in 4 and 2-seam varieties, along with developing slider, but struggles with command

Bullpen
LHP #26 Clark Boone, 33 - sixth starter/long man, throws consistent strikes and keeps his composure
RHP #21 Al Fowler, 40 - epitome of steadiness, has recorded at least 25 S in each of past 8 seasons
LHP #14 Kyle Pauley, 24 - potential setup man, can get lefties and righties with fastball/curve/changeup
RHP #32 André Leclerc, 26 - Quebecois throws a tough frisbee slider from a sidearm slot, death to righties
RHP #37 Bill McCaffrey, 34 - big 12-6 curve is his main weapon, impeccable control
RHP #43 Royal Barbour, 28 - touches 95 with the fastball, great stuff but can lose it if he doesn't get the calls
LHP #50 Ellis Rhodes, 29 - LOOGY (Left-handed One Out Guy) has tricky 2-seam, circle change, bad platoon splits
RHP #41 Eduardo “Eddy” Cavazos, 35 - jovial closer features a tough splitter, slider, comp with Jose Valverde (in his prime)
RHP #23 Trent Burkhardt, 23 - wild card of the staff, has been known to hit triple digits, but the next one could be at your head (by accident)

C #2 Josh Heckman (R/R), 24 - Heckman has great instincts behind the plate and is a tough man to strike out, still working on calling the game/handling the staff
C #18 Raleigh Hightower (L/R), 31 - Hightower, while not a great hitter, has a little pop, but his main value comes from his blocking skills and strong arm
C #29 Shad Burdette (R/R), 39 - veteran catcher knows everything there is to know about the game, dangerous in a pinch-hit spot, but unlikely to get the start

1B #22 Kareem Al-Aniz (L/R), 27 - this Sunni Muslim takes Fridays off to attend prayers, (OOC: My Friday opponent, please RP this so that the time of the game does not conflict with noon prayers) big black man with a big black beard and big black bat, mashes HRs, including a league-record 501-ft bomb
CI #34 Philip “Phil” Carter (R/R), 28 - this converted 1B now plays 3B, features defensive versatility with a strong arm and good glove, gap-to-gap power rather than long-ball power
3B #3 Brice Napier (R/R), 29 - Napier has a serious strikeout problem, but if he gets a hold of one, look out
2B #5 Chris Fletcher (S/R), 25 - Fletcher is a 15/15 guy with great range at 2B, not very patient though
SS #6 Jarrod Novak (R/R), 24 - a great honor for this young man after just two seasons at the major league level, 20/20 guy with good arm and great range, future MVP?
MI #7 Reid McClendon (L/R), 33 - veteran here more for lefty bat and defensive skills than for being a star, solid all-around player, but nothing special

OF #16 Martín Torres (S/R), 29 - Torres is a speed merchant and a defensive whiz, .300 hitter but no power, aggressive on basepaths
OF #45 Guy Bélanger (L/R), 35 - Bélanger contributes a little bit of everything, decent power, good arm, corner outfield defender, good pinch-hitter/defensive replacement
OF #13 Teddy Cunningham (R/L), 22 - Cunningham can play any OF position and play it well, below-average arm, hit tool still in development, good speed
OF #19 Roman Jennings (R/R), 30 - most recent MVP of NABL, Jennings had .906 OPS, 30/15 guy with .320 average, if he has a weakness, it's the high fastball, but he just might get on top of it
OF #24 Austin Reeves (R/R), 32 - Reeves has an absolute cannon in RF, mitigates poor speed with good routes, average power, but has a good K/BB ration

Graig Lowman #60 (Manager)

Dante Woodward #1 (Hitting Coach)

Charley Battaglia #47 (Pitching Coach)

Claude Corbett #9 (1st Base Coach)

Freddy Snider #8 (3rd Base Coach)

Marcellus Maloney #15 (Bench Coach)

Sandpipers Baseball Report

August 17th - City of Phrytton, M.F.C.P.

SPECIAL PREVIEW EDITION

World Baseball Classic 27 will soon begin, and the Sandpipers of Cowardly Pacifists are gearing up for another foray into the world's preeminent international baseball competition. The Sandpipers will be looking to improve on last Classic's effort, in which they finished 5-5 in the Group Stage and just missed a playoff berth.

Despite the less-than-stellar finish, by all measures the Sandpipers had a very successful first Classic. Finishing with a .500 record is no easy task for an unranked squad. The team's best moment came in MD4, when the lowly Sandpipers beat New Montreal States 8-7. NMS would go on to win the Classic, which (looking back) makes the victory all the sweeter. Another notable event from WBC 26 was the Sandpiper's 5-1 victory over the highly-competitive gang from Qazox; and who could forget the 9-4 licking the Sandpipers put on the Priory of St Luc in MFCP's very first international game.

Of course, WBC 26 had its low points as well. The worst, undoubtedly, came in MD 8. At the time the Sandpipers had a winning record and were in the hunt for a playoff spot. Sadly, CP pitcher Seth Soto had a bad start: giving up 3 runs in the first and 2 runs in the second. The Sandpipers never could catch up, ultimately losing the match 5-7. "That one hurt," Sandpiper's Manager Ian Wagner would recall, "All at once we lost a match to a team we had whooped earlier and saw our hopes of making the WBC 26 play-offs vanish. It was a quiet plane ride home, that's for sure."

That's all in the past and this year things will be different, said right-fielder Harvey Oliver: "We've only gotten better since last year. We're a faster team now; a leaner team. There's some new guys who are looking really sharp and keeping the rest of us sharp. We're going to make the play-offs this year, just you wait!"

The Sandpipers will play their first game against Saintland on August 20. That match figures to be a tough WBC opener as the Sandpipers will play away against a formidable opponent. Check out the Sandpiper's full schedule and a preview of Group 8 opponents below:

NEXT MATCH @ Saintland
Sandpipers Starting Pitcher: Julio Leonard
Saintland's Starting Pitcher: Ioannes Bebius

PREVIEW OF OPPONENTS

1. Darmen (ranked 7th) - A devout, conservative group with a sterling reputation for work-ethic, in recent memory it's hard to recall a Darmeni baseball team that didn't dominate the majority of its competitors. Darmen has slipped a bit since WBC 26, where they were ranked as the #2 team in the world. Still in the top ten, and coming-off a disappointing WBC 26 in which they failed to make the play-offs, most expect Darmen to be out for blood against their Group 2 competitors. Darmen's use of a DH at home will be particularly frustrating for teams like the Sandpipers who eschew the rule. They are pre-season favorites to win the group.

2. Saintland (ranked 27th) - Twenty spots south of Darmen in the rankings, Saintland has made huge strides since being ranked 69th at the beginning of WBC 26. No doubt their trip to the round of 16 (in which they were narrowly edged by Saugeais 2 games to 1) had something to do with their rapid ascension. Though a baseball powerhouse, the internal governance of Saintland leaves a lot to be desired. In response to reports that Saintland's authoritarian government regularly "disappears" political dissidents - and the well-known stories of alleged criminals "committing suicide" while in Saintland police custody - many in the Majestic Freeholds are calling for a boycott against Saintland games.

3. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec (ranked 54th) - The Expos of RKQ were dismal in WBC 26: the team finished dead last in their group with a 2-8 record and a -21 run differential. Still, as a testament to their resilience, the team is back and has improved enough to move up 4 places in the rankings. It's unlikely this group will finish in the basement again. The Expos boast a fine home stadium in beautiful RKQ; a land said to be almost as beautiful as the Majestic Freeholds. The Sandpipers should feel like they are home-away-from-home when playing in the RKQ.

4. North Franklin (unranked) - New to the international baseball scene, the unranked Wasps of North Franklin will have their work cut out for them against the tough competition in Group 2. Early scouting reports suggest that this team can handle it: the Wasps have earned nothing but praise from international baseball observers. In an interesting move, North Franklin will field a 5 pitcher rotation: meaning two Wasps pitchers, Nick Satasive and Christian Gell, will only pitch a single match in the group stage. Here's hoping they are at their best when their number is called, or it might be back to the domestic leagues next year!

Gregoryisgodistan's Sports Ministry announced this evening that the home games against The Sova Empire and Western Cuba will be played at National Stadium, while the home games against Britonisea and West Guiana will be played at the smaller Baseball Stadium.

Gregoryisgodistan has experience facing Sova Empire outside the WBC, having defeated them in the final of International Baseball Slam II, 3 games to 1. Western Cuba is the 10th best team in the world. This is why these two teams were selected to play at the larger stadium.

The Zwangzug Zebras!

Numbers after the teams denote their first tournament: this is mostly for personal record keeping. RPers have free rein, though I'd ask you to justify any departures from the given lineup or "rotation".

The Zebras are a defensively-minded team overall, eschewing many power hitters in favor of patience at the plate. Pitchers, likewise, tend more towards finesse than speed. There is no DH used at our home stadium, the Worm Hole (located in Spenson).

Manager: Eileen Janvier. (Logrove Dolphins) Slow to hook players, and also tends not to platoon--she will, however, be much more favorable to a player riding a hot streak. The manager of the runner-up WBC 25 team.

Zebra policy abandons the traditional idea of a bullpen. Instead, all twelve Zebras pitchers are starters on their professional teams (though they'll also come off the bench to work relief here). They'll start the group stage games in order; no set rules as to who comes in when, feel free to make it up if you're RPing before me (but probably not the starter for either the previous or following game).

Pitchers:
#15, Cynthia Roddis, R/R, Arlington Aurora, 25
#18, Peter Butel-Tiand, L/L, Logrove Dolphins, 24
#96, Ndidi McGronoss, L/L, FTC Monkeys, 27

Group 8 Predictions

#3 Sicoutimont
Sicoutimont is the run away favorite to win Group 8 and advance to the playoffs. They have been very consistant in the World Baseball Classic and, in their four yeard of participation, they have yet to have a losing record in group play. In last year's WBC 26, Sicoutimont was in the same group as Estope. Against Estope they won both games, 11-0 at Estope and then 11-7 in Sicoutimont. They ended group play going 8-2 and finishing 2nd in the group due to overall run diferential. From there, their season really turned magical. They were able to advance all the way to the championship series before losing to New Montreal States in 6 games. With their history of success, there is no reason for them not to consider to excel, especially considering their current ranking of 3.

Past World Baseball Classics
WBC 23 - 3 Sicoutimont 10 5 5 52 51 +1
WBC 24 - 3 Sicountimont 10 7 3 74 51 +23
WBC 25 - 1 Sicoutimont 10 8 2 53 38 +15 Q
WBC 26 - 2 Sicoutimont 10 8 2 74 43 +31 Q

WBC 27 Prediction: 6-2
We expect them to win the group but still drop a couple games as they have every time competing. Expect them to lose one to Estope and another to Skeckoa. But make no mistake, they are by far the best team in this draw and will go far in this tournament, perhaps even a championship.

#29 Estope
Estope shocked the world in their first World Baseball Classic and advanced to the Round of 20 as an unranked. This seemed to be the start of something big for Estope but ever since then they have fallen flat. Following their breakout showing, Estope started WBC 25 0-5. Following a coaching change in which Nicholas Carr was named the new manager, Estope finished group play 5-5 and in third place. Everything seemed back to normal and it appeared that the next season would be back to the good days where Estope was winning. Not so fast. Estope once again started 0-4 and finished with a losing record at 4-6. This placed them at 4th in the group and was once again a huge disappointment. But this tournament should be a good one for Estope. However given recent struggles, this tournament could go either way for Estope.

Past World Baseball Classics
WBC 24 - 2 Estope 10 6 4 53 64 -9 Q
WBC 25 - 3 Estope 10 5 5 37 35 +2
WBC 26 - 4 Estope 10 4 6 44 56 −12

WBC 27 Prediction: 6-2
With smaller groups and a favorable draw Estope should have an easier time advancing than in the past. Sicoutimont will be a tough opponent but the rest should be manageable for Estope. Expect at least one loss to Sicoutimont and probably another surprise loss along the way. Estope has a real shot of making the playoffs and maybe even a spot in the the round of 16.

#40 Skeckoa
Like Estope, Skeckoa made waves in their first World Baseball Classic advancing past the group stage with just a 5-5 record. However last Classic they finished last in their group with a paltry 3-7 record. They come into the tournament with very little momentum but have a lot of potential.

Past World Baseball Classics
2 Skeckoa 10 5 5 47 55 -8 Q
6 Skeckoa 10 3 7 28 50 −22

WBC 27 Prediction: 4-4
They should do well but not quite good enough to advance. They seem most likely to pull a few upsets but are also vulnerable to get upset. We predict that they will split every series and miss the playoffs.

UR New Texaco
Not much is known about these newcomers and so not much is expected of them. However, as we very well know, unranked teams can surprise and make the playoffs. Of the two unranked teams, New Texaco strikes us as the most likely to advance.
WBC 27 Prediction: 3-5
That being said we still don't expect much from them. An upset of Skeckoa and a sweep of Myeeria are the only wins that we predict. This team has potential but not enough experience to move on.

UR Myeeria
Another newcomer who is looking to build a reputable baseball team.
WBC 27 Prediction: 1-7
We aren't expecting much from Myeeria. They should win at least one game but not much more. However considering they are new, they are a wild card and could win more games than anyone could predict.

Qazox WBC XXVII PREVIEW:

As the Wolves seek to stop the recent decade long slump, the usual homes of the national team are being renovated, (Pheonix and National Stadiums); so for the first time Qazox will play in more than two stadiums in the group stage.

Parque Isla de Cràneos, Cuidad de Iguana (Capacity: 39,126)
Image

Crane's Island Park in Cuidad de Iguana is the smallest stadium in Qazox, but located in the most baseball-crazy city in the country's; expect the crowd to be loud when Milchama visits.

Burrito King Field, Las Vitas (Capacity: 49,000)
Image

A most unsual stadium in that 40,000 seats are on the grass berms along the right and left field lines and past the fences, Sakurakoku will have to deal with an old-school stadium field.

Eric Reisen Field, Bruxen. (Capacity: 41,025)
Image

Eric Reisen Field is one of the newer stadiums, and as such is the least broken in. Lymantatia will likely have trouble adjusting to the sea breezes which can switch direction almost instantaneously.

Hammond Stadium, New Bruxen (Capacity: 54,321)
Image

Levivania will hopely enjoy the New Bruxen Hotel and Casino complex more than playing in Hammond Stadium with its infamous oppressive heat index in the 110s nights.

The Wild Kards

Yes, there are intelligent ponies on this team. If you are interested in finding out more information on how they physically play baseball, TG me and I'll explain. They will never 'cheat', however; and make a note of that. 'Cheat'ing being a pegasus straight up flying to a fly ball, or a unicorn using magic to alter the ball's path after it's been hit or thrown.

As a general rule of thumb, this team is prone to errors and usually relies on a high strikeout rate. Our starters usually don't mind pitch counts in the 110s or 120s, but that can go by quickly, so we aren't afraid to use our powerhouse of a bullpen. Most of the pitchers are fine with the bat, as well. At least they're not throwaway outs, and often times help their own cause if they come up with runners on base.

Manager: Ricky Ledée, 47 years old, #33

Lineup: (Batting order, position, name, age, uni #, bat/throw, info)
1. 2B Ricky Hormuz, 34, #9, R/R; Lines balls everywhere and has base stealing down to a science. Horrid with the leather. He's starting to slow with age, but his experience keeps growing, along with his ability to fool and unnerve pitchers.
2. CF Aaron Aaron, 28, #44, R/R; Above average speed, above average glove, above average power. Gives solid stats all around, though the only really remarkable thing about him is the number of doubles he hits--he's led the KBL for five straight years, right from his rookie season.
3. RF Batl Skard, 31, #5, L/L; A great contact hitter who WILL make you pay if you hang something. Often uses his height to rob would-be homeruns over National Stadium's ridiculously short right-field wall.
4. LF Gale Wind, 22, #22, R/R; A Pegasus (she doesn't fly, but can still jump higher than most people) with a cannon for a wing. Hits bombs consistently, but is decidedly average in clutch situations. She's also quite quick, which helps her cover National Stadium's expansive left field.
5. 1B Jeffery Snider, 33, #45, R/R; Would come up with any throw at first base on a team that didn't have Hormuz and Caster in the infield. Even so, he drastically helps reduce the effects of their horrid throws. Most clutch hitter on the team.
6. 3B Short Stop, 26, #68, L/L; An earth pony that darts around the field like he owns it. Snappy on the basepaths.
7. SS Starline Caster, 20, #13, R/R; A speedy and flamboyant young unicorn, Starline is equally likely to make that massively improbable game-saving play as he is to send an easy throw into the stands. He's managed to reign in his throws recently, but is still prone to the occasional horrendous error.
8. Pitcher
9. C Geoff Jones, 28, #3, R/R; Leaves runners from both teams out to dry frequently.

Bench:
C Wellman Roberts, 30, #14, R/R; Big power with a strong arm, but his blocking isn't quite up to par.
2B Roger Lozano, 18, #86, L/L; Tremendous power, no discipline. Whatsoever. Decent with the glove.
SS/3B Laura O'Neil, 30, #6, R/R; A strictly defensive replacement, which is quite important when Caster is normally manning (ponying?) short. A non-threatening slap hitter.
DH/1B Doyle Christain, 21, #17, S/R; Excellent contact, great power, amazing discipline. Slow as hell and a stooge with the glove. The perfect DH.
OF Alexi Alonso, 31, #87, L/L; Good contact, good speed, good glove.
UTIL Long-Hi Cho, 24, #1, S/R; Versatile, but unspectacular. Last resort.

In case of DH: Doyle Christain takes the DH spot, hitting sixth. Stop and Caster both move down a spot in the lineup.

Rotation:
P Casey Brant, 30, #4, R/R; Karditan's resident flamethrower. Slings a flaming fastball and slider (both hit 97 regularly; fastball can hit 101 at times) that look identical out of hand. Has a good changeup. Throws sidearm.
P Money Ball, 26, #65, L/L; A technical unicorn pitcher who specializes in deceptive breakers. Can throw anything that curves effectively and has developed a baffling upward-breaking Slurve.
P Cliff Leaper, 24, #31, L/L; The nation's foremost Pegasus pitcher. Jams righties with a hard cutter and has a dirty slider that can get batters on both sides whiffing.
P Manny D'aquisto, 21, #7, R/R; A young upstart with a bright future, he mixes a strong fastball with a broad, sweeping curve to keep hitters off-balance. He's still developing his splitter, which is just a decoy pitch at the moment. Prone to going for strikeouts and throwing too many pitches; has a tentative 90-pitch cap (which will usually last him anywhere from four to six innings).

Bullpen:
LR Scott Kasmeer, 33, #19, L/L; A metaphorical horse. Good rising heat, good change, good bite to his overhead curve.
LR Long Haul, 24, #58, R/R; A literal horse. A unicorn, to be precise. Knuckleballer. Take that as you will.
MR Hessafa Merana, 24, #96, R/R; Strikeout demon, but unreliable in pressure situations. Touches 103mph on a good day, and sometimes throws a curve in the dirt if he's bored of the fastball.
MR Firmer Delmar, 31, #27, L/L; Lefty specialist. Can work deep in an emergency. Superb sinker, good fastball, good change.
MR Miles Cagle, 25, #99, R/R; The all-around best pitcher on the team, used in high-leverage situations no matter the inning. Strong fastball, strong circle change, strong curve, strong slider, strong cutter, he throws everything and the kitchen sink(er).
MR Brad Chadford, 33, #53, R/R; Throws submarine-style. Used for a change of pace after high-velocity pitchers, having a fastball slower than Brant's change. Also packs a good sinker and a deceptive sweeping curve (looks fat coming in, suddenly it's gone).
CL Jasmine Carr, 31, #74, R/R; The second-best pitcher in the pen, she normally works low- and medium-pressure 9ths. Primarily throws a two-seamer that breaks in on righties, mixes it in with a cutter that breaks away and a slurve that harshly breaks low and away. If we're on the brink of blowing it, Cagle will come in instead (if he hasn't been used already).

Home Stadium: National Park in Neighpon. 40,000 Capacity. 415ft straight left, 430ft left-center, 435ft straight center, 370ft right-center, 290ft straight right.

EL DIARIO DEPORTIVO DEL SANGTI - BASEBALL - WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

Play ball!
Sangti drawn with defending champions in Group 6
by Rafael Sigua

Missed me?

I have not made any report on our hosting at the International Baseball slam, but I have returned just in time for the World Baseball Classic 27 in Maklohi Vai and Saintland. However, before the Indios can even travel to one of those nations, or even both, the team must undergo a qualification group stage process. Unlike previous editions, twelve groups of five will be constituted instead of ten groups of six. And what does that mean for one team? They do not get to play at a crucial last match day. And guess what?

Sangti got the short straw.

The schedule released by the organizing committees show that Sangti Indios will have a bye at matchdays five and ten, and if that would be a must win matchday, well, the Indios would be out of it already. Best thing to do? Beat all opponents that come their way. Easy task? Absolutely not, when you have the defending champions and your Round of 24 tormentor in your group.

This edition's Group 6 consists of Sangti, the defending champions New Montreal States, The Serbian Empire who are infamous for the urinal smashing incident at the 25th edition, and two unranked teams; The Kingdom of Costa Luna, champions of the first International Baseball Slam and unknowns Ukrainya. WIthout further ado, let's take a sneak peek on the teams facing Sangti in the group stages.

NEW MONTREAL STATES
Rank: 4, Last Edition: CHAMPION
After returning in the 20th edition of the Classic after their debut at the second edition, the Reformed Expos have since steadily improved, culminating to a Championship at last year's edition. Winning a tough group that included Qazox, Western Cuba and then unranked team Cowardly Pacifists, they run riot at the Indios, Kinzar, Milchama, Ko-oren, and Sicoutimont to win it all. I expect the reformed Expos to win the group and have a strong showing come playoff time.

However, as I have mentioned, this team beat the Indios, then unranked last edition. With the same lineup released by Monico Deligero, the only change perhaps in the games is that they will face different starting pitchers. Cyril Sumaoang started in Game 1 where Sangti lost 5-1 and Leevhan Mumar started Game 2, another loss, this time a scoreline of 9-5. Oh wait, seeing from the roster submitted by Deligero, it seems that these same individuals will be on the mound on the NMS games! But this is not Victoriaville in Cassadaigua. One in their home field in Parc Jarry, New Montreal and our in our very own Estadio Beisbol. I fearlessly predict a scalping at the 7th matchday, as I do not believe in de ja vu.

Prediction against Sangti: 1-1
Starting Pitchers: Cyril Sumaoang (MD2); Leevhan Mumar (MD7)

THE SERBIAN EMPIRE
Rank: 28; Last Edition: Round of 16 (eliminated by Milchama, 2-0)
Another strong opponent, famous for one of their hitters smashing a urinal in the 25th Edition. However, the Vuk are known for their hustle and hardwork. Debuting that particular edition, the next season got better for them. Second in Group 4 behind Maklohi Vai, they beat Thatius 2-1 in the Round of 24, before being swept by Milchama in the Round of 16.

Even if the Serbians will be welcomed here at matchday six, security in the urinals in Estadio Beisbol have been intensified to avoid the toilet smashing incident ever again, but the thing that Sangti must prepare for is its players. With Leevhan Mumar in the mound at the away match and Russel Lauchengco in the corresponding home match at the Estadio, expect firewroks in the opening game of the Classic. This team must be beaten if the Indios wants to repeat its feat last edition.

Prediction against Sangti: 0-2
Starting Pitchers: Leevhan Mumar (MD1); Russel Lauchengco (MD6)

KINGDOM OF COSTA LUNA
Rank: UR, Last Edition: N/A

The Kingdom of Costa Luna may be unranked, but they have minor accolades already. This nation won the first International Baseball Slam, and won third place in the second edition hosted by Sangti. However, without much of WBC experience, expect Sangti to sweep them both games. These games may be tough and therefore hard-earned then. Monico Deligero scouted the Royals during their stay at Sangti, so lucky for him, the Royals will be in a group with the Indios.

Prediction against Sangti: 0-2
Starting Pitchers: Teodoro Lalamunan (MD3), Cyril Sumaoang (MD8)

UKRAINYA
Rank: UR, Last Edition: N/A
Another unranked team. Unknown of whatabouts for this team may lead to an expected sweep by the Indios, but, who knows. They will destroy them anyway at this classic. The only known information about this nation is that the Gorillas defeated their handball team in matchday 1 of the Handball World Cup 10.

Prediction against Sangti: 0-2
Starting Pitchers: Franco Lumahan (MD4), Teodoro Lalamunan (MD9)

With the preview done, let's look back at the only preparation the Indios have done, the International Baseball Slam II.

Not a good one

The Indios had a lackluster performance at the Slam. Placed in Group A with OrigamiMaster Frogs, Sova Empire 25ers and Gregoryisgodistan Bat Slaves, the hosts were expected to blow the competition in Group A, but they only mustered a win over the Bat Slaves at Lord Almighty Gregory Baseball Stadium, and a win in an exhibition match against the Levivania Dohickeys at Estadio Beisbol.

"It was a horrible sight." Deligero said at the Indios' performance at the Slam. However, he hinted at a possible showing of true colors of the Indios in the Classic. "We would like to destroy our opponents rather to destroy videocams and spending thousands of Sangs on those cams."

The match against the Serbian Empire will be broadcast on the newly launched TiViSangti Sport 2, due to the main channel broadcasting the Orean Olympics.
