Konrad grinned as he saw Page's whole facade of callous defiance collapse with the mention of the dead partisan girl. That's a definite weakness I can exploit. You utter moron, this is why you don't get attached to your underlings. You deserve this for your stupidity, at the very least.
The interrogation went on for hours like that. Konrad demanded answers of Page to all sorts of questions - the names of his squadron members, who their commanders were, where they had been stationed, what they were planning for the future, the radio frequencies they had used, where they had fought, their equipment...

But Page didn't respond. No wisecracks, no quips, no threats, nothing. His eyes were wide and unblinking, his shaven head bent over, his face seeming to be totally fused in an expression of unrelenting horror. He didn't react in any way to Konrad's demands, his taunts, his provocations...nothing at all. Even when resorting to direct physical action (slapping, punching, kicking, etc.), he didn't react beyond hollow, tortured-sounding screams that seemed to be not coming from Page himself so much as just his body - his mind was somewhere else entirely.

On one level, this wasn't too surprising. Konrad had expected a considerable degree of resistance coming from Page in their first interrogation, and most of his questions were just red herrings, meant to judge Page's reactions for the small squad of SS doktors watching behind the one-way glass. Much of the more advanced interrogation equipment hadn't arrived yet, or had yet to be installed, and so there was little more Konrad felt comfortable doing for this session without further planning or input from the doctors. Going any farther and risking permanent damage to the prisoner was not something Konrad was prepared to do.
Nevertheless, Konrad thought to himself through the haze of his righteous anger as his fist connected with the side of Page's head, whipping it around with a resounding thump for around at least the tenth time, Konrad's latest screamed interrogative echoing around the room, This is dangerously fun...

And so, after a few hours of this, a drained and sweaty Konrad, his knuckles and wrists aching from the exertion (although Page, his face swollen and his neck and arms turning purple, looked considerably more worse for wear than he did), opened the door and motioned the stormtroopers in to remove the moribund Captain back to his cell. The prisoner had to literally be dragged out of his bindings on his chair, his arms and legs totally limp. Konrad watched them go, his lip curled, still breathing heavily from the exertion. A minute or so later, one of the doctors came in from the adjoining observation chamber behind the black glass and joined him, clipboard in hand. The doctor was a compelling-looking figure - his head swathed in thick black hair, an enthusiastic grin on his face revealing rows of perfectly white teeth and accentuating a charismatic face.

"Well, you certainly hit him where it hurt, Major. You found a weakness, but I fear it may not be too productive to exploit it further, if he's that sensitive to it."
Konrad nodded, shaking his fist slightly to lessen the pain. "He turned into a vegetable back there."
The doctor looked back at his notes. "Indeed he did. His resistance to physical and verbal abuse were nominal at the beginning, but when you mentioned that woman, he absolutely shut down. He didn't seem angry - he seemed paralyzed. Guilt, remorse, call it what you will, those are my best bets for why he shut down as he did."

Konrad kept nodding. "Right, right. That makes total sense with the circumstances of his capture, it was unambiguously his fault that she died. But Herr Doktor, how can we use this? How should we move forward?"
The doctor took out a pen and circled a few scribbled phrases on the clipped sheet. "Well, as you've seen, this prisoner is extraordinarily sensitive to that particular flaw in his psyche right now. Just a mention is enough to render him effectively catatonic and useless for any of our purposes, be they interrogation or...reorientation. Assuming he comes back to his senses, which I predict he will in a few hours to a day or so, we should continue along the interrogation axis."

A single eyebrow went up as he flipped onto a different page of notes.
"However, in the next five to seven days, you should attempt to work in the reorientation angle further, when you see an opportunity, and ramp it up day to day. Be kinder to him. Offer him clear incentives for cooperating - not that he'll take them, but he'll be tempted by them, and he'll be weaker for it in terms of his mental resistance, even if he isn't consciously aware of it. And then, begin to question him not about military information, but about him - how he got here, why he got here, how he and his friends were used up and spat out by their commanders..."

A pause, the doctor smiling. "...and how the death of his lady friend wasn't even his fault, really, or your fault - it was the fault of the pointless cause she served, and British who tricked her into giving up her life for it. All you were doing was following orders. All Page was doing was following orders. All she was doing was following orders."

He giggled slightly. "...But who were the ones giving the orders? Why? And what does he have to show for following them? By this point in the process, I think he'll have been so inured to the pain, he'll be desensitized to it - he won't shut down like he did before."
Konrad chuckled as well. "Oh, that's good. I like that."
"Me too. And once we get to that point, Major, we'll refine our game plan further, based on what's come up since. But for now, I think that'll be or battle plan. Now, I think some of the other doctors wanted to speak with you about the cases of the other three prisoners - follow me, please, we'll go and meet them..."
Konrad gestured for him to lead the way. "After you, Herr Doktor Mengele."

Mentally, despite the superficial fruitlessness of his exertions, Konrad was quite pleased by the proceedings. When he'd put this plan into place after his escape from that damned English prison camp with Gerhard, he could feel it in his bones that the plan was right - that it would lay Excalibur low. It dovetailed perfectly with the Hendaye meetings - even though Spain, the ungrateful sub-Aryan cowards that they were, refused to be drawn into the war (after all the Condor Legion had done for them!), they were still happy to bargain for German aid in the luring-out and destruction of one of the last annoying Republican partisan groups in the Northern mountains. It had been a fair deal - the Germans would arrange for the partisans to be drawn out and annihilated, never mind how, on the conditions that the Germans also lured the British there, and the Spanish both allow German fighters and soldiers to enter their airspace. It was all very convenient and chummy. And it had worked flawlessly.

And now, he had a quarter of Excalibur in his hands, and all the time and people he needed to punish them, to break them down, and to remake them in whatever way pleased him.

It didn't bother him that Page didn't give him any answers to his questions. That was beside the real crux.

Soon, Page would be telling them all he knew - and he would do it willingly.
