The guy never should have been admitted to a church, anyroad. He's hardly a model Christian.

I'm not denying that he was and still is an effective champion for human rights. But these quotes were common knowledge in RSA during the mid to late '80s:
"When justice prevails over injustice, as in Zimbabwe, that shows that the Kingdom [of Christ] has already arrived." - Published in a statement to ECUNews, at the height of Mugabe's Matabeleland atrocities
"Maybe HE [Jesus] was an illegitimate child." - 24/10/1980, Cape Times
"I thank God that I am black. At the last judgment whites will have much to answer for." - Argus, 1984
"Every Christian must be a revolutionary. Jesus was a revolutionary." - Rapport, 20/4/1986
"The West can go to Hell." - 23/7/1986, Cape Times

This is another point. Left-wingers are perfectly happy to allow Priests expressing left-wing and socially liberal views to offer opinions, but when it comes to conservative Priests its 'Oh noes, religion stays out of politics, secular state111!

Quotes cherrypicked from statements he made during the height of apartheid, when he and people who looked like him were subject to legalized, institutionalized discrimination against them, and revolution often seemed the only option in the face of Botha and his predecessors. Good job with the character assassination.

Racism doesn't excuse the fact that he called another one of Africa's more suppressed nations "The Kingdom" of Heaven, never mind that between 1981 and 1987 Robert Mugabe butchered more people in Zimbabwe than the South African security forces under three decades of apartheid. Nor does it explain why he saw it fit to imply that Christ was illegitimate. What, pray, does that have to do with Botha or the Nats, either? "The West can go to Hell"....if we're discussing a man of the cloth here, he just declared that he wanted over 900,000,000 people to be indiscriminately condemned for eternity.
I see your point, but I'm not attempting character assassination (lest I post that picture of him giving a speech in front of a Soviet hammer-and-sickle). I'm merely pointing out why I don't consider him a faithful Christian.
