I'd say you're right. Found a picture of her (at least, I think it's her) taken from astern. One turret aft, so presumably there's two forward.

Odd, I could have sworn her class were built with five and were reduced to four when their guns were re-bored.

Cavours and Duilios were built with twins firing over triples fore and aft with another triple midships; midships turret was removed during refit in the 30s.
Littorio was built with two triples forward and one triple aft.

Yes, you're right. The picture I found of the Duilio has two aft turrets. The Y turret, no idea what the Italians call the rear most guns, was obscured by several life boats.

Pretty sure it was just called skip bombing, but I'm not sure the Swordfish was capable of doing it.

And maybe I exaggerated a little. But it's good you're taking care of grammatical business.

I'm almost positive it wasn't.
EDIT: According to the wiki, the first time it was ever even used successfully was in 1942.

Wow, "caddishness" is a word, apparently.

Sabres In The Night, Part V

As the drone of multiple engines on dozens of planes reverberated around him, Charlie wondered just how he came to be sitting in a lone Beaufighter in the midst of a German bomber stream.

Yes, that was it.

Orders had come down from Command for a 'Special Mission', seems somebody had looked at his record and noticed that he'd been assigned to 319 Squadron and that apparently he was currently the only pilot of that squadron still in the British Isles. Lucky him.

He'd barely half remembered the mission briefing, worryingly there was only him and Rankin who was actually present which set alarm bells ringing in his head. Seems the French Resistance that reported one of the German top brass was visiting northern France, though it appeared this one was fairly clever. The German commander had opted to travel by air to avoid Resistance ambushes and even then he travelled by night, meaning Fighter Command simply couldn't send over a flight of Spitfires as a welcoming party. No, the operation had to be done by night and that was were Charlie came in.

Truth be told the plan was relatively simple, link up with a German bomber heading back across the Channel to France in order to avoid being detected by any radar the Germans may or may not have. Then fly along a track, much like the typical night fighter sorties he'd been flying for the past few weeks, waiting for the Resistance to radio a codeword when the target was airborne. After that it was a simple case of using the Beaufighter's radar to track down the German transport and shoot it out of the sky.

Though Charlie was wary of the fact that anything could go wrong with the plan.

Much to his surprise they had had a lucky ride thus far, joining up with a stream of German bombers prove to be extremely easy and when challenged Rankin simply flashed out a message on an Aldis lamp that supposedly said 'Radio Out'. Charlie did wonder where Rankin had managed to get hold of the German codes, though the answer he got was that a code book was recovered from a crashed German bomber. Regardless the trick seemed to work for the time being, certainly the Germans appeared to become more and more relaxed as the waters of the Channel appeared far below. But Charlie couldn't help but feel like a fox in a chicken coop, especially when the 'chickens' surrounded him with dozens of machine guns.

After a while the bombers changed formation and altered their course, Rankin confirmed that the planes were starting their descent to land at their airbases. Resisting the temptation to open up with the Beaufighter's heavy armaments, Charlie simply nodded and then turned onto the new heading that Rankin gave him after he'd checked their position. Charlie then settled down for a long flight as Rankin listened intently on the radio for the magic codeword, they'd been told at the briefing that they were to wait for up to a couple of hours before turning back to Blightly and chances were that the Resistance would miss their appointment.

It was maybe an hour and a half before a single word was transmitted on the frequency that'd been told to listen to; 'Bonaparte' spoken by a feminine French accent. A moment later Rankin confirmed it as the codeword, their target was airborne. Charlie rolled the Beaufighter onto the new heading given to him by Rankin, though he keep an eye out for German fighters in case Jerry started getting a little wary of the lone aircraft. Minutes stretched by as Charlie anxiously kept watch on the night sky before Rankin reported a radar contact, rolling the Beaufighter round Charlie spotted a lone tri-engine German transport. Charlie lined up the Beaufighter and then opened with all ten of the aircraft's guns as he got in range, the transport crumbled under the punishment it received and went down in a fireball with a heavy trail of smoke.

With the mission accomplished Charlie opened the throttle and gunned the engines as he pulled the plane into a turning climb as German flak started firing at them. Just as it seemed they got clear the Beaufighter jolted hard and Charlie felt the controls go slack, the oil pressure dials in front of him were spinning down as flames burst out of the port engine. There were more impacts and Charlie saw tracer overshooting from above them, they had been pounced by a German fighter!

"Hang onto something!" Charlie yelled over his shoulder as he wrestled with the controls. "We're ruddy crashing!"

As the French countryside rushed to meet them Rankin yelled something back, though Charlie only half-heard it before the Beaufighter ploughed into the field and everything went black...

a brighter future for a better life: part 2 of 3

Postby The balkens » Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:41 am

(Dover, England. 2 weeks after the events in Berlin.)
Michael unlocked the door into his home in Dover. It was rather nice for a man of his pay grade.
"Victoria? You home?"
He called out. After a moment he concluded that she must be out with friends, it was Friday after all.
Looking to unwind and cool down his emotions, Michael poured himself a glass of whiskey. Beside where the bottle was often placed was a photo of Excalibur squadron taken in '40.
He picked up the frame, rubbing the glass with his thumb and thought back to the good ol days.
Before joining MI6, before that fateful day in 1945, how he was forced to make decisions that would still hang in his mind.
The door opened and Michael reached for his pistol as muscle memory did this.
"Michael! I didn't expect you home."
It was Victoria, Michael’s wife of 13 years. He met her after a falling out with Alexis.
"How was Berlin?"
She asked, putting her arms around his neck.
"It was fine. Glad to be home though."
Victoria was a pretty thing, long blond hair and blue eyes and a nice figure to wrap it all up. Of course, Michael loved her not because of that. But her way of doing things, slow paced and relaxed.
"Where are the boys?"
Michael wondered about Matt and Robert.
"They’re at a friend’s house for the weekend."
The two kissed and Michael put his arms around her waist.
"Remember when we met in that bar? How you looked at me?"
Michael lamented what was supposed to be a one-night-stand.
"How could I forget? It was 1940 and I think you were the one that couldn't stop looking at me..."
She chuckled.

(Many hours later.....)A phone rang at Michael’s side of the bed. He angrily picked it up.
"WHAT?!"
"Ah....agent Zilorski, the director wants to debrief you on your most recent assignment."
Michael sighed annoyingly.
"Can it wait?"
"Well yes bu-"
Michael slammed the phone on its hook, it made a loud clang.
(The following morning)
Michael found himself alone in his side of the bed; Victoria was downstairs, making breakfast.
He got dressed in his black suit, black undershirt and red tie. Michael sped down the stairs in a hurry, even though it was his day off.
He snuck up on Victoria while she was busy, this surprised her. She let out a gasp of excitement.
“You shouldn’t do that!” she said jokingly.
Michael kissed the back of her neck and caressed her hips.
“The first day that I’m back and I can’t touch you?” Michael whispered in her ear rather seductively.
“Aw, you’re just like a thirsty dog.” Victoria said slyly……

done.

Just a pointer, you seem to have trouble staying on the same lines and with similar formatting. For example, I would format the story as so:

It just makes it a tad jarring to read when it's done as you do it.

like so, and transition.
Unless I directly countered it or something.
