(ooc: reviving some characters from a now-defunct league RP)

"Tell me something of Paradystopia, Kharamhan"

Kharamhan vol'de Rastred'alzabasz presented a sardonic grin. Silently, he was straining at the ropes which bound him, trying to gain some purchase about the wrists. His captor was pacing back and forth, lost in his supposed diabolical genius or something like that. Kharamhan had no interest in empathising right now, he had to escape.

"Ahh Paradystopia! Such an unblemished land. Ripe for picking. All it needs is a little prod in the right direction. I trust that fool Dultsabjr sent you? Doesn't want anyone encroaching upon his sleazy monopoly, eh?"

Kharamhan laughed to himself and received a powerful left hook to the abdomen which stole his breath.

"Talk! Dammit!"

This was always the irritating part of the process. Kharamhan was mute and trying to relay this to a potential assailant whilst bound to a chair is hardly easy. He washed the spit around his mouth. There was a slight taste of blood and one of his premolars on the right hand side felt tender and a little wobbly. Great. Good job being on Tarquihn Dultsabjr's payroll allowed an adequate amount of health insurance for his line of work. He spat onto the floor and with a foot wrote the word 'mute' in the bloody spittle. This time it was a right hook to the abdomen accompanied with a anguished cry from his captor.

"What use are you to me if you won't talk?"

Kharamhan shrugged, or did his best to emulate a shrug whilst tightly bound. From a nearby table, adorned with various pseudo-surgical implements, a long scalpel was chosen. Moonlight from a grime-smeared skylight glinted off the blade.

"Maybe you just need persuading?"

Kharamhan sniggered. He thought the bad guys must love him. Endless monologue oppurtunities. No amount of torture would 'persuade' him into speech. It's just such a shame he couldn't express this accurately as it would certainly cut down on the typical megalomaniacal tendency of allowing Kharamhan ample time to plan an escape whilst they massaged their ego with all the 'I'm so great, I caught you', 'You cannot expect to capture me' and 'Let me tell you my plan in great detail before you die'. The shadowy figure approached and held the knife close to Kharamhan's face.

"One final chance to talk before you die."

'You're meant to tell me your plan first, fool' thought Kharamhan 'didn't you go to super-villian college?' And then with a great effort, He thrust his weight backwards. The chair toppled backwards allowing Kharamhan to strike his captor with a boot square between their legs. They howled and stumbled. As the chair struck the floor, the force of the blow slackened the ropes for a split second. Just enough time for Kharamhan to get an arm free. His assailant was on all-fours, cursing loudly and crawling towards the table.

"You will die Kharamhan! You will fucking die by my hands!"

The captor clambered up to the table and grasped a rather vicious looking bonesaw. With a scream, they twisted and hurled it in the direction of the chair. There was a clattering as the saw bounced upon the wooden shards and slid away along the concrete floor of the dark warehouse. The mute had vanished. Painfully finding their feet. The assailant looked around the room. Silence. Not even a shadow twitched in the dark corners. He drew a gun from an chest holster and stood motionless for several seconds, then he fired berzerkly and arbitrarily about the large open room. Bullets ricocheted about in the gloom, creating brief flashes. No Kharamhan. He ceased firing and gruffly kicked the remains of the chair that had once restrained his foe.

Kharamhan was currently bounding north across the Commune (Geographical aid). He just had to get over the river and into Nhmadia. His 'business trip' hadn't been as successful as hoped and it would be a long time before he could return to Rhekia. At least now he knew who he was up against and with the World cup just around the corner, time was of the essence.

It was a gloomy wet day on the Pzetrovlaskian training ground.

World Cup 64 Groups announced, Darmeni All Greens confident that they can finally get through

Coming off of a Copa Rushmori XIII title in which Darmen defeated Sargossa 4-2 in the final, the All Greens are riding a wave of enthusiasm and confidence. After eight tries, Captain Tor Tong Lee is confident that the ninth will be successful. "We've got a good bunch together here, and I think we have what it takes to get to where we want to go." Manager William St. John de la Ware, who won the Copa in his debut as All Greens Manager, will now make his debut as their Manager in the World Cup Qualifiers.

"I'm excited for the chance to lead Darmen to glory. Hopefully we can improve on our past performances in these qualifiers, and carry over the good form we had in the Copa, and finally qualify."

Darmen will kick off the campaign with a home friendly against Ko-oren as part of the Seventh Darmen Exhibition Series. It will be the tenth meeting between the two teams. Darmen will start the true campaign towards qualification on the road against Islo Aiz ens Islo Dorne, an island nation from Esportiva. It will be the first meeting between the two teams, but their low rank and a less than perfect Baptism of Fire campaign makes them easy prey for Darmen.

Then comes the first leg of the Battle of the Westlands. Valladares will be welcomed (maybe not so nicely, but welcomed nonetheless) by 86,000 screaming fans in the Borg El Beat. The two teams have faced only once before, a 4-2 victory to Valladares on the first matchday of the 49th Cup of Harmony. "It's quite funny actually," said Tor Tong Lee, "They're our neighbors to the east, and we've only played them once, yet our neighbors to the northwest, Carmadin, have been played against twelve times."

With Valladares being ranked twelfth in the multiverse, it should be a hard match, and it'll be followed up with a road trip to Farfadillis, ranked 23rd in the multiverse. Darmen has faced Farfadillis four times in the past, and has won all four match ups. "We're looking forward to meeting them again," commented Darmeni forward Bryan Faulkner, "they present us with a nice oppritunity to score lots of goals, even if they are ranked quite a bit ahead of us."

Following the match with Farfadillis, the All Greens will return home for an easy match against Deadmans, who they have faced twice before, both wins. Then the All Greens will take off for a long road trip, first to fellow Rushmori nation Birolika, and then to Warkus. Both matches will be first meetings for the All Greens against them. Both teams are ranked in the lower 100's, and Darmen will not be able to take them likely. "Birolika and Warkus have very decent teams, and I don't want to see us take them lightly," said de la Ware. He continued, "We need to come out strong, and score quickly. Get ahead, and then attack again. And again, and again. Only then can we defend comfortably."

The final three matches of the first half of the qualifying campaign are fairly easy. A home match against unranked Altiplane, then away to 75th ranked 19th Century Beards, and finally a home match against East Shippensburg, ranked 210th. Darmen has an all-time record of 1-0-0 against 19th Century Beards, and 2-0-0 against East Shippensburg, and has never played against Altiplane. Darmen's biggest test in the last three games before the break will come against 19th Century Beards.

The second half of the qualifying campaign will see home and away reversed. The three other friendlies that are apart of the Darmen Exhibition Series have not been filled, and the DSF is still looking for opponents. In addition, the DSF has invited AOCAF champions Audioslavia and Campionato Esportiva champions Apox to compete in a triangular tournament among the three regional champions. Most details have not yet been released, but we do know that the competition will be rather low key, and that it will be called the Lyons Cup.

Overall, Darmen's chances to qualify look fairly good. The only question really is who will finish second and get the playoff spot, with Valladare looking like locks for the top spot in the group. Will it be Darmen or Farfadillis? Or will 19th Century Beards or Birolika steal the show?

World Cup 64 Qualifying Preview

(Saintland Press) Following a disgraceful display of crooked refereeing in the Baptism of Fire, the Sanctii were eliminated from the tournament by New Sideburn. Multiple times, Sanctii players were called offside when they were onside and multiple times, New Sideburn scored goals when they were offside. Now it is time for World Cup Qualifying to begin and, fortunately for our arch-rivals New Sideburn, we did not draw them in our group. Instead, we were drawn into Group 2 while the team that stole the Baptism of Fire championship from us is drawn into Group 15. "I still want to get my revenge for the cowardly and vicious attack against me by the captain of the New Sideburn team, but that has to wait for now. It is now time for us to qualify for the World Cup. Our road to claiming our rightful place as the best soccer team in the world begins fittingly with a visit to the reigning World Cup champions. I believe and every player on this team believes that it is the Will of God that we will defeat Audioslavia and then they can crown us the Unofficial World Champions." - Prince Andreas

Yes, a confident National Team from the Kingdom of Saintland will travel to Audioslavia to face the defending World Champions in their qualifying opener. Despite being the reigning World Champions, Audioslavia is ranked just 5th in the world. The Sanctii will host 57th ranked Krytenia in our home opener. The remainder of the schedule consists of a visit to 100th ranked Backyard Sports, a home match against 37th ranked Kinitaria, a visit to 334th ranked Spagbovia, another home match against 122nd ranked Kishrael, a visit to unranked Zwangzug, hosting 166th ranked Queer Poco el Mono Ara and finally a visit to 78th ranked Soviet Canuckistan. Then, the Sanctii will play the same 9 teams a second time with the home and away teams reversed. In total, the 226th ranked Sanctii will play 18 matches. That makes this the longest round-robin round that any Saintland National Team has ever competed in.

Realistically, what would be a successful World Cup qualification run for the Sanctii? Finishing in the top half of our qualifying group. There isn't that big a difference in class between #100 and #300. Most of the teams ranked around 100 or below are just like the kind of teams the National Team faced in the Baptism of Fire. They aren't very good and they aren't ever going to make a serious run at qualifying for a World Cup. The only reason they're ranked higher than us is because they've played more international games. They aren't actually better. Audioslavia, Krytenia and Kinitaria are not going to be easy competition. Only the top 2 teams from their group qualify, but the scouts from the Cup of Harmony will be watching and will be offering invites to the best teams that don't qualify for the World Cup. Although we want to qualify for the World Cup, it is more realistic to set our sights on the Cup of Harmony.

The Royal Networks will be carrying World Cup qualifying games over the coming weeks. The SP can confirm that every Saintland qualifier will be televised, even if the Sanctii are eliminated from World Cup contention by that point. We can also confirm that the opener against Audioslavia will be broadcast live on Royal One. We do not know for certain how many qualification matches will be broadcast, as the Royal Networks also have the rights to broadcast the upcoming Baptism of Iron and World Bowl. There will probably be many arguments in the Kingdom, as soccer fans and gridiron fans will both want to cheer on the National Teams and follow the tournaments. Rest assured that every World Cup qualifier will be available on the Royal Networks channel on Sanctustube for live viewing anywhere in the world.

Following the defeat to New Sideburn, the entire Saintland team left United Gordonopia and returned home. The sole exception was Prince Andreas, who had been so impressed with the complimentary Titan "simulator" every player on his team had received that he decided to stay for a few days and attend the local video game show that was taking place around that time.

He had already gotten permission from his father, King Paulus XV, to start a company, with the full financial backing of the King's Government, that would sell "simulators" in the Kingdom of Saintland. At the show, the Prince learned that the "simulator" was actually a video game console and he took a look at several consoles. The Prince was impressed by what he saw. The computer technology that apparently ran these boxes could produce interactive movies that appeared life-like. Then, the Prince discovered that handheld consoles existed. He knew immediately that a handheld would be ideal for the market in the Kingdom of Saintland. Most households in the Kingdom of Saintland had just 1 TV and 1 computer, but a couple having a dozen children was not uncommon. A home console would probably be used primarily by housewives, but everybody would have plenty of time to play a handheld.

The Prince left Gordonopia before the show ended. His presence at that show had somehow not been noticed by any local media outlets and he had kept his interaction to a minimum. He had a World Cup to qualify for and he had watched on TV as his country drew defending World Cup Champions Audioslavia for their opening match. He took the very next flight back to Saintland.

Upon returning home, he was not welcomed by huge crowds as his older brother Petrus had been when he prematurely ended his World Tour to train the gridiron team. Prince Andreas resented the fact that his older brother would be King some day and he resented the fact that Prince Petrus was the biggest celebrity in Saintland and a hero to the youth of the nation. Instead, Prince Andreas, arguably the greatest soccer player in the world, walked the streets of St. Petrus in relative anonymity as he headed for his family's Royal Palace. Upon entering the Palace, he immediately made his way to speak to his father.

Prince Andreas - Father, I have returned.

King Paulus XV - Welcome home. Tell me, how did your research about the simulators go?

Prince Andreas - I found out some very important information. I will be looking to hire some foreigners to help me get my company started. We're going to be making our own handheld simulator with lifelike graphics. We'll be releasing it with simulations of all the major sports available on Day 1.

King Paulus XV - I'm glad to hear that.

Prince Andreas - I'm also considering releasing a simulation to teach about the Bible.

King Paulus XV - Why would that be necessary?

Prince Andreas - The only way this project will be successful is if we sell to foreign markets. If we can spread the True Faith to some unbelieving foreigners, we will be doing the Lord's Work.

King Paulus XV - I see. It seems like you know what you're doing with this project.

Prince Andreas - I don't want the SP to report anything about it just yet. My company will make an announcement when we are closer to ready.

King Paulus - I'll make sure this project stays a secret. Right now, you need to focus on the World Cup. Alessandro Seius has stepped up recently during your absence, but you need to help your team prepare. Anything short of a Cup of Harmony bid would be completely unacceptable.

Prince Andreas - Understood. I will refocus on soccer and we will show our talent to the world.

Prince Andreas left the Palace and rejoined his teammates. He didn't say anything about his new business to them, but he did pull Georgius Catiotus aside and began to talk to him away from the others.

Prince Andreas - Georgius, I am starting a new business with my father's backing. I know you are a computer programmer by profession, so I wanted to offer you a chance to work for me.

Georgius Catiotus - I appreciate the offer. Like the rest of us, I am currently on leave from my job and I will be marrying Martha after these soccer tournaments are over. I'll consider your offer.

Prince Andreas - That's all I ask for. I'm sorry I can't provide you with any more details at this time.

Georgius Catiotus - I understand. Your project needs to be kept confidential. Whatever it is, you don't want the press talking about it prematurely.

When this conversation was over, the team returned to practicing. They still had 3 more hours of practice to go and then they were going to the nearest Royal Library for a lengthy film study session on Sanctustube. The Sanctii needed to watch all the footage of Audioslavia that they could. They still had 24 hours until their flight would leave the airport and they would spend their time preparing to face the best. Before their flight, their final stop was the local Cathedral, as they prayed to God for his assistance in defeating Audioslavia. They would likely need God to leave Audioslavia with a positive result...

"So the draw was announced last night."

"Oh yeah who we gonna play. I heard we were a third seed, best chance we have had to qualify since, well we qualified."

"Well we got at least one Rushmore foe in Saugeais."

"Well that will be a fun set of games."

Yeah. There have been mumblings that they don't see us as a threat to their qualification chances out of the two spot. We will most likely be their biggest competition."

"Who else we got."

"The top seed is The Sylvanaes Queendom."

"Well we can chalk up two losses there, they are a force to be reckoned with."

"Yeah, easily top dogs."

"Yeah, are new youngsters really don't instil hope in me off the bench so after our starters and a few subs we may have depth issues, so we may just end up with some problems. Anyways who else we got."

"The most recognizable low seeds are Eastfield Lodge, Earo and Westros."

"Looks like a fun group, won't be easy, but if everything was easy there would not be a point."

"Yeah well i hope we qualify again finally."

"Word."

“ . . . were rounded up after the incident. Interrogations are on-going.”

“And Jarque?”

“As yet there’s been no sign. We are moving towards the theory that he’s fled the country. Or that he’s dead.”

“He’s not dead until I see a body. And State Intelligence, do you concur?”

“We do sir. Every trail is cold. He may have been gone for months.”

“Perfect.” Gregorio Emparán clenched his fist in frustration. “Alert all our overseas assets. That is their top priority. I want that bastard found and brought to me.”

The Sargossan president glared at the collection of uniformed and suited men sat before him. Whereas his predecessor had preferred the comfort of his plush office for most official business Emparán favoured the situation room that lay deep below the Presidential Palace. A large, horseshoe shaped table dominated the centre of the room. Around it monitors displayed a plethora of data, all controlled from a control station in the next room.

“Fear not gentlemen.” Emparán managed a smile. “We’re nearly there. I have one more thing on the agenda.” He pushed a button and a very familiar stretch of water and land appeared on one of the larger screens.

“Külmsaar. Polkhan to be exact. Site of a massive Polarian construction effort. A project that has serious economic implications and represents a flagrant affront to our national sovereignty. Not only are they trying to muscle in our shipping influence they have also chosen an island that is ours by right for the location of their new super hub. Gentlemen, I am sick and tired of the Polarians and their thinly veiled contempt. Time and again they have openly thumbed their noses at us and time and again we have let it go. But not this time. This time a line in the sand will be drawn. This time, they will suffer. . .”

A figure in the heavily braided uniform of a general cut off his leader with a raised hand. “My president, I knew you would came around to this way of thinking eventually. Which is way we have been working on a little something for just this moment.”

He lifted a phone from the desk top. “Corporal, we’re going to need access to the Central Command Defense Protocols.” He paused as an unseen technician in the control room followed his instructions. “Initiate Northern Fire.”

The map of Külmsaar was replaced by a larger image depicting both the Sargossan and Polarian archipelagos. Dozens of dotted lines started to erupt from sites all across the Sargossan islands. A number seem to emanate from the surrounding waters. They crept inexorably towards the scattered northern chain of cold rock that made up the Polar Islandstates. As each one impacted it became a large disc of light on the screen. Until the entirety of the PIS, from Torshavn to St Paul was lost behind an eerie yellow glow.

“One strike. Total victory.” The general sat back down, a smug grin on his face.

Emparán had left his seat and approached the big screen, his face bathed in a sickly yellow light. “This is your suggestion?” He turned to the general. “A nuclear holocaust?”

“Yes sir.”

“And you offer it so casually.” The president shook his head. “Get out.”

“I . . . excuse me?”

“Get. Out. I admire courage. I admire aggression. But this is just madness. This is not a game. We’re not actually the villains in some Candelariasian spy film.”

“But . . .”

“If I’m forced to repeat myself again I will have you killed. Understood?”

The general left his seat and slunk quietly away as Emparán turned back to the assembled hierarchy. “We seem to have an empty chair. Fortunately I have someone to fill it.” He pushed a button In front of him. “Show him in.”

A door in the far wall opened and in walked a non-descript man in an equally non-descript suit.

“Ah, Jandro. Welcome.” Emparán beckoned him in. “Take the general’s seat, he won’t be needing it. Gentlemen, most of you won’t know Alejandro Ereros. He is currently attached to the Interior Ministry, although his responsibilities are somewhat more . . . fluid. And he’s going to tell us how the Polarians are going to be the architects of their own downfall.”

Royales Defeat Schmeigelland

It was a sunny day in Pierre Beach, and it was even sunnier for Les Royales, who kept their suprisingly good qualifing friendly record up. 4-2 would be the final score in favour of the Fleur-de-lis, defeating Schmeigelland. The game began uneventful, with some chances coming both ways until the 31st minute, when Girard Giroux put Les Royales on the board. Gajka Jahgv would even the score in the 39th minute, before his teammate Colin Chammi scored a 46th minute goal to end the 1st half with Schmeigelland leading. Giroux, Allonts and Savard would not let that stay the scoreline, with Allonts scoring in the 49th minute, Savard the 54th, and Neal Kent would add to the scoreline in the 74th minute to make the score 4-2.

Kinzar
Rikatan
Yelvoldia
Yesopalitha
Sicoutimont
Basque Socialist States
New Sideburn
Maklohi Vai

That's the way the cards fell Sunday, as the Violet et Bleu were drawn into Group 15 for World Cup qualifing. Yesopalitha are the highest seed, and will be tough to defeat. Northern Sunrise Islands are behind Les Royales, but are still a challenge. Kinzar come out of a successful Baptism of Fire with a decent rank, Rikatan are the lowest ranked team in the group, while Yelvodia come out of pot 6 with a decent 7.06 KPB ranking. Jeruselem are the next difficult team in the group, the second highest seed, and then there's Les Royales. The 3rd highest team in the group, the days look to be moving away from the 5-0 defeat by Camwood in our first World Cup and more into the range of 4-2 defeats like the one we saw today over Schmeigelland. Still, there's a lot to be done. Basque Socialist States come into the World Cup with a small rank, and then there's BoF champ New Sideburn. That game at Stade St-Pierre ought to be packed with people waiting to see the next generation of sporting heroes. Maklohi Vai were the last team drawn into Group 15, and a rematch of the Des Monts Ila Vai Cup will certainly be heated, that's for sure. A full schedule of Team Sicoutimont's games is below, with home stadium listed.

MD16: Basque Socialist States vs Sicoutimont
MD17: Sicoutimont vs Jeruselem, @SportCity, Pierre Beach
MD18: Maklohi Vai vs Sicoutimont

The schedule looks tough. As we correctly predicted last time around, Sicoutimont needed points in its last 3 games. Apox, Kinitaria and Bears Armed all stood in the way, and Les Royales arrive at World Cup 64 having never made the finals. #jounalisticintergrity right there, so suck it, The St-Simeon Observer! But anyways, the last half is full of home games, which is good if Les Royales need to hold a 2 or 3 point lead like they did last time around. The final 3 games are definently less difficult, but the final 2 hold the biggest challenge. Although they aren't the 2 highest seed, Jerselem are the second highest seed, and Maklohi Vai and Sicoutimont are very even, as the DMIVC showed. Most other games should be a win or draw, emphasis on the should, except the games with Yesopalitha, which are likely to be losses. For the financial guru in us, the biggest ticket draws should be: MD9, Sicoutimont vs Maklohi Vai @ SportCity,
MD14: Sicoutimont vs Yesopalitha, @ SportCity, and MD17, Sicoutimont vs Jeruselem, @ SportCity. These are predicted to be the highest selling games, featuring the 4 highest ranked teams in the group. Due to the late-spring scheduling of these qualifiers, tropical storm season should not be in effect, unless you happen to be Jeruselem: late-spring/early-summer "Spuspers" as they are known locally could bring a torential downpour to the area. Due to the failure last time of rescheduling games, which lead to the postponement of the Sicoutimont-Bears Armed game due to this weather, the game will be moved to Stade St-Pierre if a "Spusper" approaches. Next time at The Lac-Drouin Times, we'll look at Sicoutimont's friendlies with Slembana and Khytenna, and look at the opening game against Northern Sunrise Islands, then start our first player bio.

Mytanar fixture list and stadiums announced.
TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2016 | FOOTBALL | by Ondřej Klepáček

Image
Newly expanded Arka Park announced as one of nine stadia playing host to games in WC64 qualifying.

The nine stadiums announced today will be very pleased with the choice of the Mytanar FA as they will play host to potentially lucrative World Cup qualifying games at some point during the World Cup 64 qualifying session.

Stadiums ranging from the northern tundra in Ebor and Snezhnaya to the south west in Prizren. Interestingly enough, this time around there will be no stadia in Nasto with a game, a somewhat controversial decision by the Mytanar FA and one which will fuel Nastan calls of discrimination against them. Then again, no stadium in the south east of the country was given the nod although that could be for different reasons. Simply that there isn't a stadium down there that can cater to the needs of the MFA here, in capacity anyway.

Arka Park, Snezhnaya will be the most pleased with the result though, they get to host international football at their newly renovated and expanded stadium and that's not all they have planned, with further expansions already being discussed, pending Arka's success (or lack thereof), in the Top League, they have to be able to fund the expansion after all. It will be a good atmosphere up on the North Coast though, with the fans there being some of the best in Mytannion certainly. Expect the Nordkurve to have some sort of display to celebrate the momentous occasion, when they host Hyskigland.

They won't have nearly as much fun as the fans in Esca though, who have two games. One at Kotrba Park and one at Radnika, the national stadium. The latter will play host to our Rushmori rivals down the home stretch during qualifying. By then, we'll probably know just how qualifying is panning out for us and whereabouts we stand in the group - although we could have games which potentially decide the group in games against Apox and Western Cuba after that game, so a win over a fellow Rushmori team (and therefore rival), could be pivotal in our qualifying run and could be a true catalyst towards getting out of this group by winning the group.

Some of the stadium groups may not be too happy with the team they are hosting, but given the appetite for football in Mytannion that probably won't play a factor in fans flocking to games. It would probably be prudent for the MFA to organise a few high profile friendlies too, both financially but also to get the team into full fitness, ready to play games against top opposition, even if this group is nowhere near as difficult as it could have been. Sure there are difficult games against The Inevitable Syndicate, Apox and Western Cuba, but something like 12 points from them games would be good enough to run away with this group, providing Mytannion do not slip up to inferior opposition. It should be our full expectation to manage nearly 36 points from games against Lacus Magni, Silar, Hyskigland, German American States, Nethertopia and Tyrants. The team certainly has the quality to do that.

Mytannion will look to do a whole sight better than last time around, qualifying through the play-offs and then following that up with a highly disappointing performance in the Group Stage in the World Cup proper. The team has a bit more maturity about it now, and has the 25 man squad rather than the 23 to choose from, which could prove crucial in keeping team fitness levels high enough. It's expected new manager, Brian McDermott, will employ a fairly free rotation policy, moving players in and out of the team as it is required. He certainly won't be scared to blood uncapped players in the squad, with him already planning to use Obad, Sharov and Haugen in the first game of the tournament. It may seem a bit of an 'under strength' side, but these players have a lot of quality and will be expected to beat the visitors with ease.

Starting eleven to play Lacus Magni: de Zooijt - Fridrich, Berozhserkovsky, Obad, Adkvissen - Voronin, Sharov, Zaplatic, Oiskha - v Tuhinju, Haugen. Five changes from what the consensus starting eleven is, but still a team with high levels of quality and one that should beat Lacus Magni well. Expect a good win, but fans will certainly be out for blood if the team does not manage to win, even with the changes, McDermott will be blamed straight away.

MD Game Stadium
W1: Mytannion vs Lacus Magni. Oluja Stadion (30,000), Ebor.

Pre-World Cup Powersith Report

PSSN

International Rank: 109

The Powersith National Team practiced in the newly expanded Imperial National Stadium, which now seats 100,000. Though we all were disappointed by their early elimination in the qualifying stages of World Cup 63, fans here in Powersith have high hopes for World Cup 64 or LXIV. Every staff and team member from World Cup 63, is still on. This time, Powersith was drawn into Group 8, where the nations are very powerful. It features:
Hutt River
Powersith
Nekoni
Lalo Limahina
Karditan
Taeshan
Kaledor
The Sova Empire
Barunia
Republic of Egpty.

It will be hard predicting games because, well they are all good teams, hard to choose! The Powersith National Team now ranks 109th in the World.

Pre-World Cup Interviews
Interview with National Team Manager William Thomasson.
Q: How do you feel about this World Cup?

A: I feel great, and so does the squad. We have experience on what to expect in this tournament. We can't underestimate our opponents, and we have to keep training and playing as if it is an elimination game. The leadership that the older veterans have it rubs off unto the younger players, and so now everyone is staying accountable for every single player. Players and coaches are watching re runs of past games, and opponent games to see what we can do to stop and win.

Q: How much preparation do you feel is going into this Cup?

A: There is much much preparation for this cup. I mean this is the crown jewel, the World Cup. It is everyone's dream to be in it. So like I said, players and coaches are watching game film to prepare for their opponents. They stay in long nights in the gym, and the training grounds. They will do whatever it takes to win.

Q: With the Catholic States Regional Cup coming up, do you think it would distract the players from the World Cup?

A: Of course not, the Regional Cup won't even happen during the World Cup? Why would we think about it now? We just need to focus on the here and the now.

***
Interview with Goalkeeper David de Phillips

Q: You are 38 years old, do you feel age is going to be a factor?

A: At times, yes. To be honest though, I don't feel 38. I am still in my prime. I still do my clutch saves, don't know why you should ask that.

Q: With your senior leadership, how do you feel with everyone working together?

A: It's awesome that everyone is looking out for each other. we are like one big family. We invite each other out and our families to watch movies, games, or just dinner. I feel that we have a lot of chemistry going heading into this Cup. We are gelling.

***

There will be more interviews coming your way tommorow! There will be some early predictions as well! The National Team prepares for its first game on Thursday at home versus Kaledor.

Postby Nenets Autonomous Okrug » Tue Mar 26, 2013 5:12 pm

Focus on: N'enay Nenyts, Zamboni Operator Third Class & President of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug Football Federation

While the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug had been in Liventia for the Baptism of Fire, the home front had been hard at work preparing for the World Cup qualifiers.

No one, obviously, expected to qualify. But then, no one had expected such a satisfying run at the Baptism of Fire. The National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (there must be an easier way to say that) had clawed its way to the championship match without conceding a goal. Of course, in five group matches they’d scored only 8, half of them in a single match; and they scored only three in three playoff wins. Only in the final, against New Sideburn, had the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug conceded its first goal.
If only they could score their way out of a paper bag, they might have impressed more.

Still, the (increasingly awkwardly named) National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug came home to a hero’s welcome. Runner-up in a championship was not a bad entry into international footballing.

Now, though, the competition was tougher.

Much, much tougher.

The first challenge at home had been tough, too: to construct a national stadium. After extensive hard work by Penny Construction (owned by Cooper Penny, defender for the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug), an old ice rink in the capital city, Nar’yan-Mar, was finally ready.

Yes, it might be slippery when wet (which as the ice melted from a long winter’s night above the arctic circle, was often). Yes, it smelled faintly of walrus. Yes, the roof groaned under a weight of heavy snow. But it was ready.

N’enay was proud. She’d overseen the construction and parlayed a minor role as Zamboni operator into a successful gamble into the world of international footballing. Nyaryana Ngyrm (Red North) Stadium, Dedicated to Sirte the Bear, was finally ready.

N’enay smiled. She was pretty happy with the name Nyaryana Ngyrm (Red North) Stadium, Dedicated to Sirte the Bear. It had a nice ring to it. The Nenets were not afraid of long names. There was plenty of time between November, when the sun set, and March when it rose again, for slow conversations. Perhaps that’s why no one had tried to think of a nickname for the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

Nensport preview: Group 13
With your host Evgeny Nen.

13? Unlucky for some, but maybe lucky for the unlikely footballers who make up the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug!

The National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug is set to open its World Cup campaign by hosting a real contender. Here in Nar’yan-Mar for the inauguration of the Nyaryana Ngyrm (Red North) Stadium, Dedicated to Sirte the Bear:
Kulverint!

We know little of this country, save that it is a genuine World Cup contender: it actually played in World Cup 63! Kulverint has not published a roster, but then, they didn’t publish one in the World Cup either. The visit will be a complete surprise, then. Let’s hope the boys and/or girls from Kulverint can handle the cold! It will be chilly: I don’t think they have finished insulating Nyaryana Ngyrm (Red North) Stadium, Dedicated to Sirte the Bear. It could get windy in there!

Kulverint is now ranked 32d in the world. They exited the last Cup after a loss to Valanora, the Best Team Ever to Play Football. And it looks like there will be another chance for them to face Valanora this time: they’ve been drawn in Group 13.

That’s right my fellow Nenets: the Best Team Ever to Play Football will be in our group! With a line-up that promises offensive sparks, no one will expect the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug to manage another of their trademark scoreless draws. But it’s exciting just to know they are coming!

With the two Group 13 sides that made the last World Cup almost certainly the only ones with a chance to qualify this time, the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug has its best chances against some of the middle-ranked teams. Akbarabad (ranked 44), Anollasia (74), and The Islands of Qutar (99) are likely out of reach. But the National Footballing Squad of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug has earned a world ranking: 189. Perhaps that gives them a shot against higher-ranked New Ecopia (113), former greats and recent Baptism of Fire participant Dance 2 Revolution (268) and low-ranked Zomni (295) and Jugarus (337).

Of course, the Nenets will need to score more than once in a mauve moon if they’re to manage even that. A defensive wall is a great thing: but as the Nenets learned in United Gordonopia, they’ll need to get some goals of their own if they are to pose any threat to anyone.
And of course, the new stadium will have to remain standing. No guarantees there either!
Runner-up, Baptism of Fire 51

THE HAIR DRYER

What does it do?
A hair dryer may look like a small musket, and indeed it is meant to be held in the hand similar to a musket, but the only thing these devices spit out is hot air. Acquan tech-priests haven't yet figured out the alchemy contained within or what sacrifices have to be made to the Machine Gods in order to get it to do this, but the general idea is that you plug this app into the wall supplies, and it will create hot air from an internal generator, and then spit it out in the direction you are pointing it. There are many variants, but most will offer a chance to control the temperature through some way or other, and almost all are created with the intention of being used to help dry hair after it has been dampened by forces external or by choice.

Are they common?
Highly, though not in public places. Any hotel rooms you may be able to afford will likely keep a small and underpowered one in the room somewhere.

What should I do if I am offered one?
This is unlikely. Hair dryers are not typically passed form person to person in the street, and indeed there is an incredibly limited black market in most countries for the very top end designer models only. Re-sale is rare, and most simply replace any broken models, a highly unusual situation unthinkable to Acquan tech-priests.

Are they a sign of wealth?
Not usually, though there have been tales reaching the Magisterium of certain Rushmori and Atlantean economies that have got to such a point of struggling that the hair dryer is legal tender.

Can I learn how to use it?
The Magisterium advises strongly that Acquan nationals stay well away from electronic apps whilst abroad, particularly as linguistic studies of intercepted transmissions seem to suggest that apps can now be captured and used on telephones. How people get caught up and shrunk into phone lines too is yet to be discovered, but it sounds nasty and we wouldn't want any nationals to get attacked like that.

Will it hurt me?
Almost certainly. Leave them alone. In case of attack, punch them on the nose to stun them.

The underbelly of Stadii se Draggonnii Arcea vibrated as if alive under the hammering cheers and stomps of nearly two hundred thousand rabid Vegai fans. Even here, far from the pitch, the walls of concrete and steel seemed to gain a life of their own in accordance with the cacophony above as they thrummed along in unison. Even the air of the tunnel seemed to breathe with excitement as the Sea Dragons made their way from the lockers. One could hear it. One could see it. The glass that covered a poster by the locker room door that read simply “Believe” chattered endlessly in its frame. This was the moment that the Sea Dragons hoped to capture. This was the essence that they wished to bottle and pull out in times of need. This seemingly living and breathing thing was the game of football. To the players in the tunnel and the fans in the stands this was life. And it was nearing time to play.

The sounds of spikes on the tiled floor echoed like the marching strides of a thousand soldiers through the halls of the stadiums belly. And as they linked up to make the final march onto the pitch, the players from Mashiki looed more than a bit shaken at the level of the noise and the vast scope of the Stadii itself. They were no the first visitors that had grossly underestimated the sheer size of the Sea Dragons home. The Vegai fans ramped up the frenzied volume as the men and women in sky blue and yellow stepped onto the pitch and several of the Mashiki players recoiled from the sheer force of the sound.

And the match was won before it even began as the Sea Dragons cruised to an easy 5-0 win over the 66th ranked side in the world.

Euran's warm up for qualifying with comfortable win over Cassadaigua XI
Interim boss Louis Watson oversees victory in friendly

Clint Covey reports from Concord Heights, Cassadaigua

CASSADAIGUA - 2
DeSalvatore 30
Bouchard 79

EURA - 4
Kane 22
Needle 37
Dawson 60
Thomas 65

While Eura awaits it's new management pair to be announced, Louis Watson lead an inexperienced but promising team to victory against Cassadaigua 'C' as part of the matriarchal nation's comeback tour.

Kickoff was at 7pm on this warm evening in Concord Heights but Watson and the team had been out warming up all day, putting in extra preparation ahead of their first game without Ben Randall for over a decade. Exact crowd attendance was unknown, but the ground was packed out due to cheap ticket prices for this friendly match. The Cassadaigua 'C' team were sent out to try and gauge the quality of their various players after a short term exodus from international football for the host nation. To their credit they started well and had the first half chance, as Bouchard forced debutant Ulsa goalkeeper Chris Waller into a good save. The Dagan's generally had the better of the first 15 minutes but without creating anything until Reagan lifted a volley over the bar. Eura however are a clinical team and they showed their teeth with a vengeance in the 22nd minute, taking the lead with their first shot. Kieran Kane (who may well finally displace James McCroft in the upcoming qualifying campaign) latched on to Oslograd's tap down to drive the ball into the top right hand corner from the edge of the D. The Euran's were quickly taking control for the first time and Oslograd had soon rattled the post, but the Dagan's had a goal with a bit of luck on their side 8 minutes later. Broderick whipped in a corner from the left which DeSalvatore rose to head down into the bottom left hand corner, partly because she was poorly marked by Paranaya.

Yet the Euran's then pushed back and Chad Parsons soon tested Genord with a low shot that the 30 year old keeper had to keep out with a diving save. Before half time they regained the lead through Sam Needle, curling a brilliant shot in from a tight angle on the right after wrongfooting Boyce and Adamo. In the second half the Euran's completely changed the makeup of their team with substitutions, and despite Rick Connors having to make an early save from Bouchard the away side began to run away with the game. James McCroft hit the bar with a thunderous drive before Lyle Heath headed over at a corner. Tom Riley should have scored a tap in from a McCroft cross but sidefooted the ball straight at Genord. In the 60th minute Genord's resistance would be broken, as Clive Dawson scored his first international goal for a number of years with a low shot from the edge of the box. Only five minutes later the lethal Ulsa striker Sam Thomas had put the result beyond doubt, rounding the keeper to score after being put through on goal by Josh Stevenson. It was quite a reversal of fortunes, considering the respective positions of the two teams last time they met. Bouchard found herself through on goal after a fluffed clearance from Dawkins and beat Connors to give the result some respectability for the home side, but by then the game was over.

"You've got to be bloody joking."
"Oh, I'm not," said Henry, grinning. "Think of the crowds! Think of the publicity!"
"They'll fucking maim half my squad!" roared Gethin. "And we'll do the same to theirs, given half a chance!"
"Take it easy," said Henry, casually. "The Strongnesse Trophy-"
"You're seriously fucking calling it that?"
"-will be a show of international goodwill between two nations who are perceived to be strongly at odds with one another."
"You're a fucking idiot, Harry," growled Gethin.
The NSFA President only shrugged. "Maybe, but it'll keep us in profit."

"It's perverse, you know," said Jessica, when the team had been drafted out. "We've nearly actually got numbers 1 through 11."

"Whatever," said the manager, rifling through documents like a man possessed. "We've got to do this. Can't show weakness now. Too late to look back."
"Guv, we'll be playing in front of a massive home crowd."
"Almost tempted to leave Lukas off the field entirely..."
"Guv'nor!" snapped Jess. "Stop bloody moping. This isn't the only match on our plates; we've got to keep focused for 18 others. Don't burn yourself out on a bloody friendly."
Gethin shivered. New Sideburn vs. Saintland... bad blood. Very bad. Though at least it'd take some focus off the poor bastards that had splintered off to fight in korfball... who were, themselves, going against New Sideburn again tonight, and leading 2-0 in a best of five. Meanwhile, they had this to deal with...

And all this every bloody World Cup cycle? Christ, are there even enough players in the nation to replace the injuries and red cards?
The old ways were best!

Original nation behind Nephara. New Sideburn now symbolises an ideal, rather than a nation.

OOC: A two part opening RP- one for the Des Monts Ila Vai Cup just played with Sicoutimont, and then a hint as to what is coming for the first half of the cup.

The Inaugural Des Monts Ila Vai Cup

At the suggestion of the Sicoutimont FA, Maklohi Vai and Sicoutimont's national teams will now play a repeating home-and-home exhibiton series to be called the Des Monts Ila Vai Cup. The name originated deep inside the Vaian FA, and gradually rose to the top. "Des Monts" means "From the mountains" in French, a national language of Sicoutimont, and "Ila Vai" mean "To the sea" in Vaian, the de facto national language of Maklohi Vai. Together, the name means "From the mountains to the sea," a rather picturesque and overall quite jolly name that befits the nature of the cup. The first game of the first edition ended rather poorly for Maklohi Vai due to some shoddy defense. Neal Kent's 23rd minute goal was the first goal inside 20 yards by a defenseman since the last World Cup 63 qualifying campaign. Moreover, the Vaians allowed 4 goals, well over their average, and mostly played a style of defense too relaxed for the occasion. This will no doubt be a teaching moment, and maybe one of harsh words, for the coaches. The offense was not completely stifled, as Tumo Makanopalani scored in the 28th and 49th minutes to give the Vaians a chance.

After this fiasco, the Vaians headed into the second game looking for revenge and knowing they had to win by more than 2 in order to guarantee a cup victory. Runokunao Palatai scored in the 18th minute after several hard pushes by the wings. After the game, Palatai said, "We we trying to score in the first 25 minutes. Coach told us to put out an attacking effort, so that's what we did." The Sicoutimont side had many close attempts throughout the middle of the match, but never managed to put it in. Roru Lanaipoi struck on a counterattack in the 71st minute, and it appeared that the Vaians would lose based only on away goals. Therefore, they pushed harder. This, however, let the defense slide a bit, and Georges Allonts was able to get behind in the 91st minute and score, handing Sicoutimont the inaugural DMIVC based off a +1 GD. The Vaian players were unanimously congratulatory, and also commenting on how much they were looking forward to the two meetings with the Sicoutimont team during qualifying.

Another exciting season has come for the Taeshan Purple Knights as they embark on their 25th world cup qualifying campaign, only missing two attempts since their inception during world cup 53 and 54. In this 25th attempt they now attempt to qualify for the 8th time in team history, the fourth time in a row, and the fifth time in six years. Currently ranked 11th in the world with a slight chance to move into the top ten with a solid qualifying campaign. With the groups just announced we now have a chance to get to see who the Knights victims, er i mean opponents, will be in the upcoming season and now to understand their chances at this unprecedented event in their history.

The Knights groups include some familiar names to fans of Taeshan football. The most important of which are second seed Karditan, foes of the Knights in World cup 62's group stage. Also facing the Knights, in an interesting twist of fate, is Cup of Harmony 55 co-hosts Hutt River. The biggest threats behind those two might come from Kaledor, Lalo Lamahina, and Powersith. The most likely to get defeated by the Knights in a harsh conquest are group bottom feeders The Sova Empire, Barunia, Republic of Egpty and Nekoni. The season looks fun and could very well mean the reaching of even higher heights for the Knights. Home games vs the top two will be played in the Coliseum, with the next three being invited to the Stairway to Heaven in Mt Ceabring. Barunia and Nekoni will face the Knights in Docktown Memorial Park, with the final two opponents headed to X Island to face the Knights at the metropark. An exciting season is about to begin, don't miss it.

New Stadium Plans Unveiled

Image

Today, following a massive search of a new design to replace the aging Stadii se Draggon rnii Arcea, the Aslarxii se Vegai Fuborii unveiled its chosen design for the new home of the Sea Dragons. The Ekartera’al se Fuborii Vegai (Vegai Football Cathedral) designed by renowned Vegai architect Garut Ur’heikel is heralded as a modern masterpiece of design with the actual stadium resting atop the nearly three hundred meter structure. Also included in the plans of the design is a new luxury hotel for visiting national sides and their distinguished guests and dignitaries as well as several restaurants ranging from exclusive five star establishments to fast food bars for more thrifty fans. Also rumored to be included are an indoor theme park and mall. Allegedly the basement levels will be reserved for a Sea Dragon practice facility and medical services. The entire structure is slated to be a self-sustaining green building that has already garnered acclaim from several environmental groups.

Perhaps the most anticipated part of the design is what will be the new Vegai Football Hall of Fame. This ground-level element will put the glory of Sea Dragon and domestic football in the forefront for every visitor to the Cathedral to take notice of. Former national players such as Mace Kinoz’gh and His Majesty Jonasei Ariq’alara have already agreed to donate several items including the boots the latter wore during his posterized Starblaydi goal and a golden microphone used by Mr Karaoke during an event in Polar Islandstates.

Now for some interesting information. Departing from its normal control over such things, Estrianii Raelea Vega has announced that the DSE will hold an open bidding process from nations all across the World Cup community to gain the rights to complete the construction of the project. Also up for bidding are the rights to ten restaurants, five of which will be awarded to nations from Atlantian Oceania and five to be awarded to nations from other regions. The AVF will also be searching for an automaker to provide shuttles and Hotel client transportation. Any and all bids for any of the above mentioned parts of the Cathedral project will be given equal consideration.

OOC note: all bids should be delivered via TG or RP.

Well we are in a gorgeous city in Schmiegelland. You guys may remember them as the team that beat us recently in a dramatic shootout. Since then players have been taking many hard training exercises. The plan is to strategically get the ball around their players without allowing them to have any control. This may sound hard but we all know what our players can do.

Mr. Dylan: Yes, a shaky game yesterday. From what I've heard it was almost a tie. That wasn't our best game but at the same time it wasn't our worst. Their goalie was too prepared and we will be using that for this tournament.

Mr. White: Well fans have started to arrive from both teams as it seems. Yes, as Spring Break starts, so does the crowd. What perfect timing!

screen changes to the fans
There are many fans just eager to enter the Stadium. Image I mean look the them. We have recently sent a mass message of all of our fans to meet at this city to watch the game.
screen changes back to our hosts

Mr. Dylan: let me tell you, our fans are loyal!

Mr. Brown: Yes and I expect a great game today. The Perinpan team has treated this as a major loss. We need to get our men to be more aggressive and have their soccer instincts rebuilt. Its all about those basic techniques they had learnt.

OOC: more to come if I get the chance!

Hello! I am naming Milan, and I am being goalkeeper for Holy Empire and plik-plok player for famous folk music band Sbrskj Krk Trkrj; or, as you are saying in your language, "Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland".

Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland exist for pleasuring with our music. Always we are pleasuring; pleasuring the ladies, pleasuring the gentlemen, and often even pleasuring the little children with rosy cheeks and cheeky ways.

Perhaps you already are being pleasured by us - perhaps you are knowing our famous album Tractors for Turnips! and its title track, and many hit songs like "Mother is Making Beet Soup for Supper (Again)", "Family Trees Should Have Few Branches", "When There is No Meat, We Can Always Eat Beets", "Chase Away the Strangers", "The Beet Song", and "Let Us All Work Together In Spirit of Brotherhood To Repair the Boiler in Our Town's Only Factory".

This World Cup very much are we looking forward to the playing against team of potatoes, team of bears, and team from land of Yakostan. There are being other teams in group, and pleasuring us it will be to play them too. But saddening us it is that we are not playing Pzetrovlaskia or Nenets Autonomous Okrug, who sound like fine teams (even if too many vowels are being in 'Pzetrovlaskia').

But I am here to be telling you about competition from Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland!

Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland wish to be pleasuring you! Commission them to write new famous song for your nation! After each matchday, you may suggest topic for new song by Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland!

You set theme for song, and band write song for best idea each matchday - which will also include the result of your nation's most recent match. You can suggest song as many times as you like. Song theme need not be about beets. Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland look forward to pleasuring you!

Here is short new song from Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland to celebrate World Cup, and to show you how much we can be pleasuring you:

Oh, let us all join together to sing song of celebration for World Cup!
Oh, let us all join together to sing song for New Montreal States!
Oh, let us all join together to sing song for Wight!

We do not know if they have tractors or beets in these fine lands
But they will have a World Cup.
Some say a World Cup is better than tractors or beets.
We are not so sure.
But still it will be fine occasion with much singing and dancing!
Even more singing and dancing than when cousin Vlod married my sister!
And this time we do not think the bridges will collapse afterwards.
This is because they do not build bridges
With steel made from beets.

Oh, let us all join together to sing song of celebration for World Cup!
Oh, let us all join together to sing song for New Montreal States!
Oh, let us all join together to sing song for Wight!

OOC: Yes, of course it's awful - that's rather the whole point. I'm attempting to write intentionally bad cod-Eastern European folk songs that are designed to look as if they've been badly translated into your own language.

Let Us All Rejoice in Harmonious Melodies of Glorious Motherland are also available to play concerts in your country around the qualification schedule.

Stephen Wiggens
Wiggens was worried. H'd been doing his research on the teams in his group, and he did not hold out much hope. Some big names were there, and Barunia were likely to be blown away. Wiggens did not let his team know his thoughts however. It was his job to get them to perform at their best. Wiggens knew that this World Cup was one of the first steps on Barunia's sporting journey. It would be a tough road, but the name of Barunia could one day be as respected in sporting circles as that of Audioslavia or the Babbage Isles. It just needed time, and experience earned in games like this.
Stephen was excited for the World Cup. The team was ready, the fields were prepared, and Barunia would host Hutt River in their first World Cup game.

That was on Monday. By Sunday, everything would go to hell.

Lucio David
Lucio woke on Sunday to find the nation that he knew gone. He watched the news with growing horror, as the capital was put under martial law and civil war raged across the main islands. And the new so-called President, the woman responsible for all this? Lucio's aunt, his father's sister.

The team were training on the island of San Baptiste, far to the north of the fighting. But as the team met at Northport sports complex, Lucio saw the same look on each of their faces. Shock. He felt too, the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Would Barunia still compete? What would happen to their wold cup hopes?

Joric Ruskin
The team talk was long in the dressing room that day. Joric looked around the rooms, seeing the faces of his teammates. They needed someone to tell them that everything was going to be alright. They needed someone to guide them through. Joric realised with a jolt that that someone would have to be their leader, their captain. It would have to be him.

Standing up, he spoke to the room, the first thing that came into his head. "I know, all of us are feeling shocked by recent events. But we are a football team. No politics or war will change that fact. I don't know what side all of you stand on, in the war I mean, but you are all on this side when it comes to football. We shall play in this world cup, not as socialist Barunia, not as capitalist Barunia, but as the Barunia that defied the odds in the Baptism of Fire, the Barunia that held on to the death against strong opposition and came out victorious. We will play for ourselves, and for the glory of that team. We play for the Suns."

"All right," Bridget Scroves gave a thin smile, "let's go."

Brett Chrowder stood in place, grinding his cleat into the locker room floor as if digging up dust.

Scroves looked down at it. "You're going to wear out your shoe."

"These shoes look nice," he said, tapping their toes against each other. The sound was muted, as if he could already hear the fans outside, drowning them out. He couldn't. So far.

"Your socks, then," she shook her head, "come on."

Well, he wasn't as sure about the socks. "These are--new. They need breaking in."

"Do try to--well, try for a clean style of play. Regardless of the socks."

He nodded. "Yeah. I'll try."

Everything was new, it had to be. The cleats, the socks. The pants. The shirts! He'd caught sight of his own name, there on the back of the jersey, and just stared for a moment. Once the game started, he hoped, it wouldn't matter--because no matter where you turned, you couldn't read your own name on the back of a jersey. All the same. It was stiff, unusual. Maybe once they'd been broken in, gotten blown out a few times, it would be more routine, but that first game...

But for everything that felt strange about the uniform, it was at least--well--uniform, and as nervous as he felt there were nine others who hadn't just won the league and were surely just as confused about their places there and maybe just as sensitive to the energy outside, ready to be spurred onward, plus Patricia who played for Canbix too. No, it was the armband that nagged him as he rotated it around his arm, nervously.

It didn't itch, per se. Pain was something he could play through, sometimes, when he knew he would be worn out ninety minutes later anyway and it would be frustrating to miss the game. No, it just sat there.

"If you're waiting for me to boost your confidence and tell you you've earned that," said Scroves, "don't worry, you haven't."

"I--what?"

"You haven't," she shrugged, "done a fraction of what the captains did the first time around. Probably you never will."

Brett opened his mouth, found to his pleasant surprise it wasn't chattering, closed it.

"You don't have to," Scroves went on. "You have me to pick formations and lead practices and actually communicate as much to the players. You have a bunch of teammates who play here, in Zwangzug, too. And we all have a lot of fans who are going to cheer us on. You don't have to be what the captains were, before, you probably shouldn't."

"Then what's this for?" he said, thwapping the armband a little ways out from his skin with middle finger and thumb. It snapped back, stung for a moment, and then settled into place.

"Whatever you make of it."

"That doesn't exactly boost my confidence."

"No," said Scroves, tucking the clipboard under her arm, "a little nerves will be good for you. Now get out there."

So he did, speedwalking at first, and then at once wanting to freeze in place or break into a run at the roar of the crowd. Kinitaria were not the rouge-et-noirs or the Big Blues or anyone that had come to visit in between, and that didn't matter. The fans had come back. Football had come back, and under their voices Brett might have been the ball itself, pushed one way or another, caught up in the game.

Here you are. It was a long journey but finally you have arrived at Maeda Airport. You see a small blonde woman wearing all blue, holding a card with your name on it. Looks like she'll be your tour guide

Hello and welcome to the Four Panelled Empire of Dance 2 Revolution!

She smiles at you infectiously.

Let us give you a quick introduction to the history and geography of Dance 2 Revolution:

She ushers you into a small bus that is to take you to your hotel. Meanwhile she gives you a brief history of where you'll be staying for the next few days

The country was founded just before World Cup 12 by settlers from neighbouring Kaze Progressa, known as “Revolutionaries”, which is what people from Dance 2 Revolution are referred to as. Dance 2 Revolution then existed peacefully for several decades, working it's way up as a reputable footballing nation, one of the best that the continent of “The League” had to offer.

Meanwhile, disgruntled members of the community, following a dispute over the correct course of action regarding the countries national sport of Machine Dance, fled south to a then-uninhabited tropical island just off of the D2R shoreline. Generations passed and the tropical islands to the south, now officially known as The Revolutionarian Islands became a military threat to D2R. This threat was quelled thanks to the combine effort of the forces of Dance 2 Revolution and allies Kaze Progressa.

Dance 2 Revolution was soon to grow in stature hugely, as political unrest within Kaze Progressa soon led to the dissolution of the government, which was handed to D2R. And thus the three major panels of the Empire were combined: Dance 2 Revolution to the west, Kaze Progressa to the east and The Revolutionarian Islands to the south.

The northern “panel” of the Empire is a barren, walled land to the north, simply known as Evd. History knows not what happened to Evd, or why it is part of the D2R empire. It is not taught in schools, and any mention of Evd in books has been banished to the below Dead End library...

You ask about the history of football here in Dance 2 Revolution. She seems surprised and uncomfortable by your question, but reluctantly answers

Dance 2 Revolution began the road to becoming a highly successful nation in football circles. Travelling to neighbours Kaze Progressa, Dance 2 Revolution participated in the first ever Baptism of Fire tournament. Despite suffering several technical difficulties throughout the tournament, meaning the team was decimated in numbers through various transportation problems, Dance 2 Revolution won that trophy to make history, and it would not be the first time history was to be made for the Revolutionaries.

Next came a narrow exit in their first World Cup qualifiers, followed by a second final in their first ever Cup of Harmony, which ended in an embarrassing defeat to Cockbill Street, 4-0. Dance 2 Revolution continued undeterred and improved through future campaigns. Following an even more embarrassing defeat, and a long standing Revolutionarian record, to newcomers Starblaydia, D2R withdrew from the next edition of the World Cup as a protest.

This allowed the players to clear their minds, and to stew over the upset. D2R came into World Cup 17 with new found vigour, and became one of the most surprising finalists of all time, ultimately falling to a future rival in Rejistania in extra time. In World Cup 19, Dance 2 Revolution finished in the top three for the final time and in the process reached #1 in the world rankings.

Ultimately, as a golden generation of Revolutionarian players came to the end of their glistening careers, as did the success on the world stage. Dance 2 Revolution went on to win 2 further Cup of Harmonys, defeating the Elves Security Forces 3-2 (AET) on home soil, and travelling to Kura-Pelland and upsetting the hosts 2-1.

The Revolutionarian Football Association (RFA) has since refused to enter international teams into tournaments, quoting an unwillingness to again embarrass themselves and the legacy of the past Revolutionarian players, and insist that this stance will not change. This is why Dance 2 Revolution no longer participate in international football

You look at her perplexed. You ask how that can possibly still be the case when Dance 2 Revolution had recently competed in the most recent Baptism of Fire. She bursts out into what can only be described as a barrage of laughter

I just told you, Dance 2 Revolution won the *first* Baptism of Fire, teams can't participate in another, those are the rules. There was some joke article going around the internet recently about how D2R had participated in Baptism of Fire 51 and been eliminated by some stubbly team known as New Sideburn...honestly didn't think anyone had believed that garbage! BAHAHA.

She sighs and attempts to control her laughter. You stay silent for the rest of the journey and contemplate what just happened...

Mangolana Gazzette

Mangolana Returns to World Cup

The time all Mangolanians have waited for is here. Mangolana is ending their isolation and making a return to international sporting events. This begins with the 64th World Cup. With this World Cup, it marks the 10 year anniversary of Mangolana's first World Cup. Throughout the World Cup we will be looking back at Mangolana's results in past World Cups and what we can expect from them in the future.

Baptism of Fire 40 and World Cup 54 debut and Cup of Harmony 46
Mangolana was drawn into Group H of the 40th Baptism of Fire which was hosted in Kazzoria and Krytenia. Mangolana was placed with Wilfred Test, Total n Utter Inanity, Dutch Africa, and The Krieg Empire. In Mangolana's first match would be played against Dutch Africa in which Mangolana won 2-1. Mangolana would then go on to defeat Total n Utter Inanity 2-1 in another impressive win. Mangolana would go on to then defeat The Krieg Empire 2-1 and almost assuring them a spot in the Round of 16. In Mangolana's final match they would lose 2-0 to Wilfred Test. Because of Wilfred Test's crushing win of Total n Utter Inanity, Mangolana missed out on the BoF KO rounds by way of Goal differential.

In Mangolana's World Cup debut of World Cup 54, Mangolana was drawn into zone 21 with Powerfulbritannia, Sibirsky, The Archregimancy, Jacouba, and Great viveka. Mangolana would defeat Powerfulbritannia twice with a 3-1 and 2-0 domination effort. Mangolana would Jacouba twice with 2-0 and 2-1 wins. Mangolana would split the series with Sibirsky, losing at home 6-3 but winning on the road 4-1. Mangolana would also split the series with Great viveka losing at home 2-1 but winning on the road 3-0. Mangolana would lose both matches against The Archregimancy losing on the road 8-2 and losing at home 1-0. With Sibirsky's final matchday win over Powerfulbritannia, Sibirsky and The Archregimancy would advance into the second round of World Cup qualifying. Sibirsky would be eliminated in the next round while The Archregimancy would make it the round of 16 where they lost to Bears Armed.

Mangolana would also make their Cup of Harmony debut when they were invited to the 46th Cup of Harmony. Mangolana was drawn into Group Æ with Tretskivucia, Churchma, and Lycrabon. Mangolana would lose to Churchma 2-0 in their opening match of the Cup of Harmony. Mangolana would lose again, this time in a crushing 4-1 loss to Tretskivucia. In Mangolana's final match of the Cup of Harmony for Mangolana, they would draw Lycrabon 1-1. This match would mark the end to Mangolana's first ever World Cup cycle.

The Lonely Road (part one)

Postby Bears Armed » Wed Mar 27, 2013 11:26 am

(This sort-of continues on from my WC63 RP, despite the fact that IC that ended somewhat over a year ago. The 'lonely road' in question is one of the routes into the dmension of Gwaith, the location of Old Wight...)

The four SWS* soldiers looked at each other briefly in confusion, then returned their attention to the surrounding landscape.

"Sarge, weren't we in the ruins of Shebahr just a moment ago? This doesn't look much like Shebahr to me.." commented Trooper Jay BigBear, his team's demolitons specialist, gazing warily around the fog-shrouded glade in which they now stood.

"Nor to me, neither," aded Trooper Berron Lightning (communications specialist). "Not exactly a lot of trees in Shebahr, for one thing, and a LOT of trees here..."

"Ayyuh, I agree. Boarlets, I don't think that we're in Shebahr any longer"
their sergeant -- Jerra o Barrdenn -- replied. "Hr'rmm, one moment we're being attacked by some sort of flying monster whilst trying not to bne noticed by a bunch of human Chaos-cultists, and the next we're here... hwherever 'here' is. I wonder what happened: Magic against us worked by one of those cultists, a side-effect of some working by one of the mystics who were there on our own side, or hwhat?"

"We died"
stated Trooper Jirran Grey (medic) in a tone that brooked no disagreement. "I don't know the 'how', but I can definitely tell you that, for true."

"HWHAT?!?"

"Ayyuh. I just checked my pulse, and it isn't there. Check your own pulses, if you don't believe me."

"Urrkh!
"But this doesn't look like the Eternal Forest is supposed to, nor any other Afterlife that I might have expected, neither."
replied Lightning.

"Nevertheless," Grey pointed out, "no pulse means no life means dead: Hrright?"

"Well... ayyuh, I suppose it does.
"So, hwhat do you all hrreckon we should do next?"

If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

A single raindrop fell upon the flower below, wetting its petal before running down the stem and to the ground. Morning light glistened off the dew in a meadow of beauty. Among the flowers, clad in a simple red dress, was a young girl, who couldn't be more than twelve years of age; her figure betrayed her innocence as her blonde hair fluttered in the wind along with the sunshine reflecting off of her crystal blue eyes.

It was a beautiful day, a day of sunshine, and the young girl was determined to enjoy it. As she lay there, listening to the howling of the wind and the chirping of the birds, she could start to forget, to restructure, to reform. To start over. To remember what mattered and to prioritize what was to come.

A red-tailed hawk swooped down from the sky, searching for a prey; scanning, it found what it was looking for - a rodent trying to scurry to safety. Gaining speed, the hawk majestically snatched the rodent up with its claws and flew away to wherever its nest was, wherever its young awaited their food. The young girl took all this in, not missing a detail.

It was a picturesque perfect day. A beautiful, bedazzling day. But she knew deep in her heart - perhaps to the depths of her soul - that it would not last.
Hilary Vander Rox put the first page of her manuscript down, stopping to take a sip of her favorite tea - jasmine. Although Sir James Handel was the celebrated author of Freedom's Altar's sports circle, Hilary did her fair share of writing whenever she had the time. It took away some of the stress, some of the demand for excellence that the peoples of Yesopalitha were beginning to expect.

A fair amount of scrutiny had fallen on Hilary Vander Rox in the last couple months. First, Sir James, the man who had carried Yesopalitha from a nobody to becoming a team in the Top 10 of the world, and two straight World Cup Proper Tournaments, had been let go by the men in charge of the Yesopalithan National Team for the hero of Yesopalitha, Hilary. "HVR", as she was known adoringly by her fans, was ushered in with much pomp and circumstance; as she had bee the Captain of the team for its first forays into the World Cup, it was understood, no, expected, that she would have success leading players that she knew personally from playing with them at such a high level.

However, as is often in life, not all had gone according to plan. Three things had happened to undermine the serenity of Vander Rox taking over. The Sparks, Yesopalitha's U-21 Team, had been defeated in the Di Bradini Cup's Group Stage once more, despite the efforts of Quincy Demitrius-Adams to carry them through. This had been disappointing for the Yesopalithans, who were now understandably spoiled of success in all international football events. They could not understand how a team whose senior players ranked among the best in the world couldn't even bypass the group stage without much trouble in the premier tournament for football's up and coming youngsters.

Vader Rox herself understood. The fans were becoming more demanding. A few cycles ago, they had been just happy to see the team become relevant in the international scene. They had been jubilant when the Flames had passed through to the Proper for the first time in their history, then upset Aguazul in the Round of 16. However, they had become complacent. Now, as it happens with all people who get used to a certain quality, qualification was not a dream; no, it was expected.

The second thing that had happened to Yesopalithan football was the fact that since the professional domestic league had been destroyed, the players were now all over the multiverse playing football. In Atlantian Oceania, in Rushmore, in the obscure corners of the footballing world, there were Yesopalithans playing. This meant numerous things, both good and bad. A good result was the incorporation of all these different locations' version of football. From the strength and brutality to grace and ease, Yesopalithan were beginning to learn the differing styles of the different powerhouses of the footballing world. Also, since Yesopalitha's players were finding homes all over the globe, global knowledge of Yesopalithan footballers and Flames football in general was at an all-time high. Thankfully, the players had carried themselves with style and grace, and not made a laughingstock of their nation. A downside, though, was the lack of a cohesive schedule to maintain practices at the national level. It was hard to bring them all back together in Freedom's Altar to train. Hilary had done the best she could, but it wasn't at the level that she wanted at all.

Perhaps the event that hurt the team the most, though, was the 2-1 loss at the hands of Cassadaigua at The Sacred Heart. It had been Hilary's first game taking over as manager, and the sold out crowd had expected a win despite the fact that Cassadaigua was one of the footballing powers of the past, and thus should not have been underestimated. The game had been close, for certain, but the Flames had failed to pull out a win. The main blame fell to the fact that Jonah Calhoun was out of the country with a personal matter, putting Terrance Housen in the spotlight, but the fans had expected, no, demanded more from this squad.

HVR knew, as well as her players, that the Flames would once again be the ones with the bull's eye on their backs. Despite Yesopalitha's trying to bid with Valanora to host the next World Cup, Wight and New Montreal States had won. Now, the Flames were in another eighteen-game gauntlet for qualifying, and failure wasn't an option any longer. The fans had become used to success. It was a good thing, but it was also a stressful thing. How would her players respond to such an elevated standard? Without Sir James's cohesion, would they fall apart? Would the Hero of Yesopalithan Football be able to transition to being a manager?

All the focus has fallen on Hilary Vander Rox. How will she respond?
