Flying the supersonic Bora with Jungastian Imperial
Supersonic travel is taking off in a big way. What is it like to fly on the new Bora airliner?

19 March 2013

Image
The luxurious seats aboard Jungastian Imperial
Airways' new Bora jet offer cavernous legroom

by E̊sbjus Harlan

Let me start by admitting something; I enjoy traveling for the sake of traveling. And yes, I even enjoy flying, sometimes. Sometimes is the key word here. Oftentimes it can be a bother. Or it can just be painfully dull.

There are a few airlines though that have maintained the sort of mid-century glamour that's been mythologized in such sources as the RTVL-produced TV dramedy Groussherzogliche Fliger Gesellschaft. GFG itself I can safely say is one of the best I've flown on, but another is Jungastian Imperial Airways. JIA has for some time now operated supersonic flights, although unlike GFG they have never operated them to Windstrand.

Indeed, it was rather out of the way, boarding an ordinary JIA flight to St Andrews to connect with the St Andrews to Waterford flight. Nevertheless, it would scarcely be possible for me to pass up what is billed as the best supersonic service in Maredoratica.

At the airport

Even upon arriving at Roi Jacques International Airport in St Andrews the attention to detail JIA shows is almost unnerving. Upon seeing my ticket had a connection to the supersonic "Volo Class" flight to Waterford, a sharply dressed JIA employee ushered me to the ostentatious Viceroy's Rooms lounge to wait for the flight. The wait was a scant twenty minutes, and despite this, I was treated exceptionally.

When it came time to board, me and several dozen other passengers were taken aboard the plane, through a literally red-carpeted jetway, and shown to our seats.

The aircraft

One of the reasons I was adamant to try the flight for myself was the plane in question; only recently, JIA took delivery of the Monteluci Bora.

One does not have to be an aficionado of aviation to realize the immense technological achievement the Bora represents. At nearly eighty metres long, it is perhaps the largest aircraft ever to break the speed of sound. Built from heat-resistant titanium mined and processed here in Sondstead and propelled by four engines derived from the Astore stealth plane, it cruises faster than many fighter jets, and JIA proudly boasted to me that it flies the nearly four and a half thousand kilometres between St Andrews and Waterford in only two hours and forty five minutes. Unlike it's famed predecessor, the Khamsin, it produces no more noise than an ordinary airliner even as breaks the sound barrier.

Inside, it's even harder not to be impressed. The legroom on offer in the leather seats is massive, the seats themselves feel like high end armchairs, and the entertainment system is as sophisticated as it gets.

The flight

And then finally, it was time for takeoff. We cruised smoothly into the air and accelerated to twice the speed of sound at more than eighteen thousand metres and turned southwest towards the tiny Antillean principality of Somerset. The flight was pleasant, but could never be described as uneventful in it's extravagance. A lunch of a salad and a a hot main course was on offer though the flight was barely longer than an intercity train trip, and the entertainment selection was extraordinarily broad.

Indeed, the trip largely lived up to it's billing as the best supersonic service in Maredoratica, and upon touching down in Waterford, the clock showed a trip time of 2 hours, 43 minutes — two minutes shorter than scheduled. I can honestly say I can't remember ever having taken a flight that arrived early before this. But as luxuriant as the service was, there comes a point where there can be too much of a good thing. To be honest, for very many people Jungastian Imperial is perhaps too ostentatious, too fussy even.

And then I got to the price tag. Not including the connecting flight from Windstrand even, my two-way ticket was listed at 44,995 Jungastian Libra — a whopping 113,000 Sondsteadish Krons or 19,000 International Dollars, roughly. At that price, all I can say is that I hope I can pass it off as an expense.

E̊sbjus Harlan is a travel writer and SRR contributor. His new book, Sleepless in Anzère, described by the publisher as "A daring, funny, and at times firsthand look at the true stories of the underground Hippostanian moonshine runners and the rebellious drinkers who keep them in business." is now out in English.

Mr. Harlan's ticket was not complimentary of Jungastian Imperial Airways. All opinions are the intellectual property of the author and neither belong to, nor represent the opinions of, SRR Sondstead World. This article was translated from the original Sondsteadish by the SRR staff.

Van Luxemburg on track to change neutrality policy?
Political realignment could "represent an unprecedented sea change in Maredoratic international relations"

21 March 2013

Image
Van Luxemburger MP Mathias Fassbinder introduces
his PFD party at the Nei Groussherzogliches Palast.

Luxembourg — Citing "irreversable incompatibilities" between him and the governing centre-right Liberale Demokratesche Group party, Van Luxemburger MP Mathias Fassbinder yesterday formally announced the formation of the new Partéi fir Fortschrëtt and Demokrätie, joined by fourteen other MPs from both the governing and opposition parties — with general elections just weeks away.

Fassbinder's surprise announcement earlier in the week of the new party and his withdrawal from the LDG has already shaken up Van Luxemburger politics, with the PFD's platform endorsing a foreign policy that not long ago would have been seen as radical in the country — advocating for the abolishment of the neutral foreign policy which is enshrined in the constitution of Van Luxemburg — while advocating also for a substantial increase in spending on social services and industry. Political analysts in Van Luxemburg have described Fassbinder's views as populist and hard to place on a left-right political spectrum.

Furthermore, with parliamentary elections in sight, Fassbinder's strong performance in an RTVL round table with two fellow MPs from both Fassbinder's former LDG party and the SDP, as well as the party's promise of a fresh kind of politics, have already earned the PFD a 30% showing in opinion polling — enough to net them 90 seats in the 300 seat Zweete Zëmmer if they retain it going into the elections. In this event, Fassbinder would likely end up the kingmaker even if he is unable to reach the Premiership himself. This would mean a very real chance that Van Luxemburg could abandon it's long adhered to political neutrality.

"Fassbinder in government would likely represent an unprecedented sea change in Maredoratic international relations.", said Tödrikjr Ärtemssünr, an analyst at the Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute think tank. "Van Luxemburg is already a key cultural and economic power and a diplomatic power through hosting and sponsoring the Maredoratic League. An increase in it's military influence would make Van Luxemburg undisputedly one of the top tier powers in Maredoratica alongside Akimonad, Morieux, and Prekonate."

Asttun-Aldr Sten by-election: Conservatives pick up seat
Conservative Balázs Herczeg wins close election to replace Mark Harlan

26 March 2013

Image
Balász Herczeg was delcared the winner of
the Asttun-Aldr Sten election this morning.

Windstrand — After a hard fought race which remained undecided until this morning, Conservative Party state parliamentarian Balázs Herczeg has been declared the winner of the by-election in Asttun-Aldr Sten to replace Centre Liberal MPA Mark Harlan, who was appointed ambassador to Pavonistade late last month.

Herczeg's victory bodes well for the Conservative chances in the October federal elections, and also bolster's Prime Minister Lindkwist's position on foreign policy; Herczeg supports Lindkwist's internationalist stance and has endorsed Sondsteadish Maredoratic League membership. An ethnic Magyar, he has also taken a noted hard line stance towards Prekonate, the country his parents fled from in the 1960s and which some international observers have reported is now carrying out a renewed ethnic cleansing campaign in the majority Magyar province of Szendrő.

KMF announces choices in new assembly plant search
Sondstead's largest automaker to spend Kr 16 billion building two plants; will also retool at Eskerrös

30 March 2013

Image
KMF Automobile will hire 12,000 workers in
Sondstead and in Yohannes over two years.

Twedmünster — In a press release last night, KMF Automobile, Sondstead's largest automaker, confirmed suspected plans to build a car plant in Yohannes. The company has also announced it will redevelop an existing plant in Eskerrös to assemble a new supermini and will build a new factory in Käldrweder to manufacture parts.

The expansion comes as the company has seen demand, especially fast-growing sales outside Maredoratica, outstrip it's present capability to supply vehicles, and will nearly double their output of passenger cars from about 600,000 to over 1,100,000, along with creating, the company estimates, more than 12,000 jobs — only a quarter of which will be in Sondstead.

That fact has only somewhat tempered the enthusiasm with which the news was greeted in Eskerrös and Käldrweder however; at their truck cab plant in Eskerrös which will be retooled, KMF laid off 150 workers in January after sluggish commercial vehicle sales — all of whom the company has invited to return this coming winter when production for the company's upcoming supermini will start, in addition to offering about 1,200 new positions at the plant by next spring and another 2,000 in Käldrweder.

"My father worked at the Eskerrös plant until 1991, putting cars together, until they moved the production back to Twedmünster", said Alarikjr Märtenssünr, a city councillor. "For decades, our city's been being de-industrialised and sold off to Erusea or Prekonate. But now we're seeing a factory come back and a company hiring 1,400 people. It's great for Eskerrös."

The notable omission, of course, is ViZion — where KMF's importer reportedly gave a high estimate of selling three million KMFs a year. Following the terrorist attacks on Amaria three weeks ago, ViZion's foreign trade has plummeted, which company insiders suggest forced KMF's hand in choosing Yohannes for their extraregional production centre.

New Governor takes office in troubled Saint Eustace
Diplomat E̊ugje̊n Jösefssünr tasked with cleaning up corruption in Sondstead's farthest flung outpost

31 March 2013

Image
E̊ugje̊n Jösefssünr took office as Governor
of the Sondsteadish Antilles today.

Orangjste̊dr — Diplomat E̊ugje̊n Jösefssünr has officially taken office as Governor of the Sondsteadish Antilles, replacing Kermit Börkwist, who resigned following his indictment on corruption charges, including allegations of ties to organized crime, two weeks ago.

Jösefssünr, a nine-year veteran of the Foreign Ministry who two months ago was charge d'affairs at the besieged Sondsteadish embassy in Koshelev, Kamchastkia, is the first outsider in many years to be appointed Governor of the Sondsteadish island territory off the coast of Septimania. While the territory has had substantial autonomy for over three decades, the federally appointed Governor maintains some executive power, but by an understanding with the federal government, the Governor was a local who took a backseat to the President of the territory's council.

Over the past decade investigations have revealed endemic corruption in the territorial government, and it was on a platform of tackling corruption and drug trafficking as well as a new kind of politics in general that Council President Orlando Meade's Progressive Party won a plurality in the 2009 and 2011 council elections. While the PP is supportive of the political status quo, it was only reluctantly that Meade was able to give his blessing to the appointment of a Governor from mainland Sondstead.

"You have to understand the relationship Saint Eustace has with the rest of Sondstead", Meade said in an SRR interview, "For two centuries we were a colony, with no democratic governance at all. Now that we have autonomy, people feel a lot more positively about Sondstead, but going backwards to less autonomy is something that no one wants."

Upon being sworn in, Jösefssünr pledged that his role was "to observe and support, not to interfere" and that he was "incredibly supportive" of Meade. However, skepticism remained evident.

"We don't want people coming in and telling us what to do", said Godfrey Goodman, a local activist. "Nobody wants that! We don't want anymore corruption, but it's something we need to be able to fix ourselves."

Ervenik declares "total war" after Ostrian incursions
Cities of Kachmaz and Salyan reported under attack by Ostrian artillery and bombers

5 April 2013

Valpovo, Ervenik — Speaking to citizens in an emergency address early this morning local time, the President of Ervenik, Ferdinand Stankovic, confirmed reports of Ostrian incursions into his country's territory previously rumoured by Ostrian users of social media networks, and proclaimed that he declared "total war" against "every man, woman and child" in Ostrian territory.

Fierce fighting is reported in and around the boarder cities of Kachmaz and Salyan, where the Ostrian surprise attack began around midnight, but information, especially on the Erveno side, has proved hard to come by, with Erveno state media reporting that most phone lines, which remain the main lines of communication in much of Ervenik, have been cut during the attack.

Ervenik, a socialist state in southwestern Alisna and ranked one of the poorer and less free countries in Maredoratica, has a long history of ideological and territorial disputes with it's larger northeastern neighbor, but it is unknown what the precise cassus belli was for this new round of hostilities and the world is still waiting for an official statement from the Ostrian government.

The Sondsteadish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has now upgraded their travel advisory for Ervenik and is warning against any and all travel to the country, while a new travel advisory has been issued for Ostria warning against most non-essential travel including all travel to the southwestern region of the country; it is the most serious Ostria travel warning issued by Sondstead since Erich Gebhardt became Premier in 2003 and normalized relations with Sondstead.

NOTE: This post refers to events which have since been retconned. It remains here for historical reference.

Van Luxemburg election winner pursuing coalition with Fassbinder
Alessandro Lurani in talks with leader of breakaway of PFD

19 April 2013

Image
Alessandro Lurani's LDG unexpectedly
took the most seats in Van Luxemburg
general elections over the weekend.

Luxembourg — Following an election that left the country's political scene dramatically altered, Van Luxemburger MP Alessandro Lurani's incumbent Liberalen Demokratesche Group, which took a slim plurality of the seats in the Zweete Zëmmer, has begun talks with breakaway populist Mathias Fassbinder's Partéi fir Fortschrëtt and Demokrätie.

The 14 April elections resulted in the established LDG of retiring Premier Nicolas Hirtz and the upstart PFD, founded late last month by former LDG MP Mathias Fassbinder, dominating the results, receiving 98 and 94 seats in Zweete Zëmmer, respectively. The results are seen as a major shakeup not just in national politics but regionwide — Fassbinder has aggresively supported a repeal of Van Luxemburg's constitutionally enshrined neutrality laws and has forced the LDG to the right on foreign policy — and even has some wondering what it could mean for the foreign policy agenda of Sondstead.

"There will need to be a referendum if neutrality is to be repealed.", said Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute analyst Tödrikjr Ärtemssünr, "But that referendum will happen; Fassbinder will make it part of the price of the coalition and Lurani will agree to it. Whether or not it passes is an open question, but there is a very real possibility it will."

On the potential implications for Prime Minister Lindkwist's internationalist foreign policy, Ärtemssünr laid out two possibilities; "It depends largely on how this impacts the Maredoratic League, as it is an open secret Lindkwist is aiming for membership and Van Luxemburg is a leading part of the League. Public opinion has shifted in recent years to no longer seeing membership as potentially antagonistic to Prekonate or as the first step in ending neutrality — and indeed ending neutrality is no longer as unpopular as it was either. But, if a Lurani-Fassbinder government pushes for a more interventionist League, neutralists might rally against membership again."

A different view was presented by MPA Balázs Herczeg in an interview with SRR Rädio1. "I think this shows that people are starting to believe we can't try to hold an increasingly connected world away from ourselves.", he stated when asked about his thoughts on the election results. "I think it provides an example for the Prime Minister to follow and I hope it will make it possible to deal with global threats more productively. In particular I hope we can eventually recognize various rogue states as present threats to be isolated, not potential threats we can isolate ourselves from through absolute neutrality."

While talks have been ongoing since Monday, a spokesman for Lurani stated on television following the conclusion of today's meeting between the two party leaders that negotiations have been productive and that a deal may be struck as early as this weekend.

Theme park hopes to bring world's tourists to northern Sondstead
Westbergshüs Parque Maredoratique in Cheruskerland opens record thrill ride in quest for international visitors

20 April 2013

Image
Riders prepare to set out on the "Canhui" roller coaster,
named for a sea serpent of ancient Sericanese myth.

He̊rstun bi Westberg, Cheruskerland — When lined up against exotic, warm weather destinations like the Antilles, Saint-Lô, Sétif, or Vienne, the gritty Mid Esker City may not jump out as a world class tourist magnet, even with the draw of Twedmünster's museums and historic cathedral. But with summertime soon to be upon us, Cheruskerland's Westbergshüs Parque Maredoratique hopes it has something new that will put the region on the map.

At 70 metres high, reaching speeds of 130 kilometres per hour, and with a track stretching for one and a third kilometres, the new "Canhui" roller coaster — the park's sixth — is, according to the park's owner, Morieux-based Groupe ALISA, the largest, fastest thrill ride anywhere on the continent of Alisna. The Kr 160 million ($27.4 million) ride, designed by Hasek-Schmidt GmbH of Brünisried, opened today to praise from visitors and enthusiasts.

"It's definitely in my top twenty, maybe even top ten, of most fun I've ridden", said Bob Comstock, a self-described "thrill junkie" from Akimonad who has ridden more than 500 roller coasters. "That first hill is just brilliant. The only complaint I have is that it's pretty short in terms of track length, yeah."

The opening drew big crowds, helped by unseasonably warm weather — temperatures in Westberg broke 20°C in mid afternoon — with the park's manager boasting it was "filled to capacity; more than 15,000 visitors from at least a dozen countries."

Though Parque Maradoratique has long been a popular destination for Sondsteaders, it faces an uphill climb to attract international tourists; isolated from most of Maredoratica and with a harsh climate that precludes opening the park year round, it has made do mostly with local business. Between a continuing cross promotion with the low-cost airline Rjub and an investment totaling nearly Kr 200 million in it's new roller coaster and in in new amenities, though, both the park and the region are optimistic 2013 will be their breakout year.

"There really isn't much knowledge about just how much the Mid Esker region has to offer." said Westberg Mayor Markus Örl. "The Royal Museum of Transportation and the cathedral in Twedmünster, the universities and thriving art scene, Parque Maredoratique. It's not just rusting factories like people think."

IFL: HK Bankjstedr-Bünden wins Sondsteadish championship
HK Bankjstedr-Bünden defeats the Windstrand Lynxes, wins tenth lifetime championship

27 April 2013

22-year old centre Alexei Kamenev scored the
first goal of the game for Bankjstedr-Bünden.

Nörtkjeäben — In a dramatic game that saw the two teams evenly matched until the third period, HK Bankjstedr-Bünden managed to pull off a late-game breakaway against Eastern Division champions the Windstrand Lynxes that ultimately netted them the Ishögiy FürstLigä's Royal Cup and the team's tenth lifetime Sondsteadish championship since 1925.

The first two periods were intense for both teams, with Bankjstedr-Bünden goaltender Jen-Erikjr Winter and the Lynxes' goaltender Pierre Poulard blocking no less than forty-seven shots between them. It was only in the third period that Bankjstedr-Bünden centre Alexei Kamenev managed to score a goal.

"It was very long, and I started to get impatient.", the Milogradian-born player told reporters following the game. "I was thinking 'will someone ever score?', and then I just saw the opening and took it.". 2012–2013 was only the second professional season for the 22-year old Kamenev. A second opening soon came, and veteran left winger Mihäel Äleksänder scored a second goal for Bankjstedr-Bünden, with the game ending 2–0 in their favour.

"It was incredible," Äleksänder told reporters, "Out of the blue we clinched the championship in two shots. It felt like God's Providence."

Having won their tenth lifetime Royal Cup, Bankjstedr-Bünden is only the third team to have been Sondsteadish champions ten times, following IHK Windstrand and Mägimaa HK. It was also the team's first championship since the 2005–2006 season.

Agriculture Minister's whaling comments spark controversy
Doctor claims Ingjessünr "does not sufficiently understand the science involved in food safety"

30 April 2013

Image
Comments on whaling made by Wiktorja
Ingjessünr Monday sparked fierce debate.

Sündsgeät — Following comments made by Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Wiktorja Ingjessünr at an appearance in Renmark, a running controversy over the ethics and health implications of the whale hunt in eastern Sondstead has been reignited.

"The whale hunt is vital to the livelihood of many people who live in small towns on the east coast.", Ingjessünr said. "It is also entirely sustainable and actually produces less greenhouse gases than raising cattle for beef. In fact it would be wise to raise the catch quota, which has been at about 500 for many years, to reflect the size of the whale population, and to export whale meat to countries which have poor food security and nutrition."

Ingjessünr went on to express doubts that the risk of poisoning from high levels of mercury in the flesh and blubber of marine mammals is at the level scientific studies have suggested, contradicting a renewed recommendation issued by the Ministry for Health and Social Welfare last week warning that consumption of whale meat be limited to no more than one serving a month and that young children and pregnant women should refrain from consuming it all, as well as drawing concern from health experts.

"It definitely concerns me that the Agriculture Minister does not sufficiently understand the science involved in food safety.", said Peder Älleshölm, a brain surgeon and health advisor to the environmental group Green Sondstead. "It has been definitively demonstrated that there are dangerous levels of mercury in the blubber, flesh, and particularly organs of cetaceans. Studies have also shown that their is an unusually high occurrence of Parkinson's disease in many communities on the east coast. There is a clear and worrying correlation."

The Minke Whale and Pilot Whale (actually a large species of dolphin) have been hunted around the northeastern Maredoratic for thousands of years. In Sondstead, the Minke Whale catch is largely commercial and presently limited by law to 564 animals a year, set when commercial whaling resumed in 1992. Conversely the Pilot Whale catch remains largely a community matter, with most of the nearly 2,000 animals taken annually being driven ashore by local fishermen and distributed among the community.

In the debate over whaling, both sides have argued environmental data supports their case. The opposition to whaling has also centered on ethical concerns over the methods used to kill the whales (shot with explosive-charge harpoons in the case of the Minke Whale, driven ashore by boats and killed by quickly cutting the spinal cord with a specialized "whale knife" in the case of the pilot whale) and cetacean intelligence, while supporters have characterized opposition by international environmental groups as a form of cultural imperialism.

Correction — While the article as published suggests the Minke Whale and Pilot Whale are the only cetaceans caught for human consumption in Sondstead, the indigenous Nen people of northeastern Sondstead are also permitted to hunt the Finback Whale and Narwhal in limited numbers.

Foreign Minister: "Cabinet is in agreement on the Maredoratic League"
Ascension talks begin Monday; Membership vote could be held as early as this month

3 May 2013

Asteriopol — Minister for Foreign Affairs Märten Änderssünr today has confirmed reports that the Lindkwist cabinet is proceeding with Maredoratic League membership and will commence preliminary ascension negotiations on Monday, with a vote in the Federal Diet to approve membership possible as early as late this month.

"After carefully studying the potential impact of membership on Sondstead's economic and foreign policies over the past year and after informal discussions with other Maredoratic heads of government and state, the choice has been made to pursue membership.", Änderssünr said at a press conference. "Cabinet is in agreement on the Maredoratic League.".

While a vote in favour in the People's Assembly is not assured due to the potential misgivings of some within the Centre Liberals and Socialist Labour, among others, many analysts agreed that membership is likely to pass.

"The Conservatives are largely in favour, and the leadership will definitely whip the vote.", said Tödrikjr Ärtemssünr at the Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute, a leading expert on Maredoratic affairs. "The KDA also leans toward favouring membership, and the SAP is split. Besides the minor parties, the main obstacle would be the Centre Liberals, but the Foreign Minister's statement suggests the party leadership was convinced to support a yes vote.".

The larger obstacle then may be popular opinion; a non-binding referendum held in 1997 rejected Maredoratic League ascension by a more than ten-point margin, despite support (albeit somewhat cautiously) from both Prime Minister Fritssunr and the Leader of the Opposition Emil Ülrikjr. In his memoir, Fritssunr later stated that "There was a notion among a lot of people in office at the time that people supported neutrality mainly to avoid being dragged into a war with Prekonate. The referendum disabused us of that.".

However, public opinion has shifted since 1997, with many no longer seeing non-involvement as necessary. Recent polling suggests that a majority of Sondsteadish adults now view Maredoratic membership positively and that nearly two thirds view membership either positively or neutrally.

At the press conference, Änderssünr indicated that if a referendum is held it will be concurrent with general elections this October.

Loft Sündstedr inks new aircraft order
Largest Sondsteadish airline to buy 40 jets, add destinations; order is the company's largest ever

3 May 2013

Image
Loft Sündstedr will purchase 40 new jets in a
deal valued at more than Kr 29 billion.

Windstrand — Sondstead's largest airline, Loft Sündstedr, today announced an order for 40 new jetliners and plans to add new Alisnan and extra-Maredoratic destinations to it's route network in response to toughening competition from low-cost airlines such as Rjub.com and JetVL.

The order, which is the single largest in the company's seventy-year history, will include 20 jets plus 5 options from each of KMF Systems and Van Luxemburg based Monteluci Aeronautica e Difesa. The deal, which includes KMF PM33 and Monteluci A200-600XL, A360-200, and A360-300 aircraft, is valued at $5.02 billion, or more than 29 billion krone̊n. The deal also represents the first order for KMF's upcoming 100-seat "PM33" jetliner; as the launch customer, insiders indicate Loft Sündstedr received a sharp discount over the aircraft's $45~50 million target price.

The order comes as Loft Sündstedr, traditionally the dominant player in Sondstead's air travel sector, has come under intense competition from low-cost competitors, chiefly Rjub.com, which has undercut it while also offering at times better service in the domestic market with larger, more comfortable aircraft. With the announcement earlier today that Sondstead may join the Maredoratic League and concurrently likely sign the Martigues Agreement to eliminate customs barriers with other regional countries, the airline may soon also be under renewed fire from international low-cost carriers JetVL and uneasyJet and from KLG Royal Braunswabian Airlines, which already operates to several destinations in Sondstead from their hubs in Brunswick-Swabia.

"Increasingly there is a trend towards deregulating the industry and removing barriers to foreign carriers operating domestic services outside their own country or services between two countries foreign too them.", said Helmut Däumler, an aviation industry analyst in Mannheim. "This is part of the scope of various Maredoratic League agreements on international transport and will likely be a sticking point in ascension negotiations.".

Loft Sündstedr has in recent years been pushed by stockholders to increase ties with other airlines and to cut costs; the Sondsteadish government has even considered selling most of it's remaining minority stake in the company to another airline, with suggested suitors including KLG as well as Sericana Oriental plc, the parent company of Loft Sündstedr partner Ruccolian Airlines. Along with the announcement of the order, Loft Sündstedr also announced cost cutting measures, including closing it's lounge in Saint-Lô and charging for sandwiches, salads, and soups on shorter flights.

NOTE: The second news story in the post has since been partially retconned. The original version is preserved below;

Dinsmark turning towards the Pact of Steel?
Dinsmarker Presidential candidate Vidkun Gunnarsen advocates membership in Ostrian-lead fascist alliance

5 May 2013

Image
Vidkun Gunnarsen, a leading Dinsmarker Presidential candidate
and Right Party leader, has advocated Pact of Steel ascension.

Aslo — With Presidential elections in the country now less than a month away, the leader of Dinsmark's Høyre Party has made a surprising statement for the traditionally Braunswabian aligned country — seemingly advocating his country join the Ostrian-lead Pact of Steel.

"Dinsmark should join its Savonian brothers and sisters in the war.", Vidkun Gunnarsen said, in a statement suggesting the country align itself with the Ostrian ally. Gunnarsen's statement was supported by most of Dinsmark's right wing parties, who have united behind his Presidential bid in the past months.

The statement comes as Dinsmark is still reeling from a mass shooting at a concert committed by Hendrik Larssen, a vocal member of the Dinsmarker Communist Party, which left 49 dead and dozens more injured. The attack prompted a rise in the polls for the centre right after concerns were raised the incumbent President Jens Halvaarsen is not doing enough to keep crime under control, with many centre right MPs pressing Halvaarsen to seek the death penalty against Larssen. However, while Halvaarsen's lead has diminished, he is still the favourite in the elections to be held later this month.

Dinsmark joining the Pact of Steel would likely chill Dinsmarker-Sondsteadish relations, particularly with the present Sondsteadish government favouring a less neutral foreign policy and increased ties with Brunswick-Swabia and the Maredoratic League. In the event of Dinsmark acceding to the pact, Foreign Minister Märten Änderssünr stated that trade restrictions could be on the table.

"Human rights have been a guiding light in this government's foreign policy.", Änderssünr said. "While we desire good relations with Ostria, we continue to have reservations about the country's human rights record and have restricted the sale of certain types of military technology to them due to this. I would not rule out restrictions to other countries if we have similar concerns in those particular cases. However, it is something that in this case is preposterous to discuss at this time.".

Dinsmark presently operates F/A-9 Lannerfalcon jets, produced in Sondstead by KMF Systems, spare parts for which would likely fall under an arms export restriction. The equivalent KL-9 Länerfälk operated by the Royal Sondsteadish Air Force itself uses Dinsmark produced systems.

Ground broken on new high-speed rail line
200 km/h railway will greatly cut travel times to Hedenstedr; critics question sustainability of city's growth

7 May 2013

Image
The new railway to Hedenstedr is scheduled to open in late 2017.

Hedenstedr — Transportation Minister Rolfr Storstrand and Sitonland Minister-President Erikjä Sage̊r today broke ground on the 136 kilometre, Kr 13.55 ($2.32) billion InterStedr 4 high-speed railway line between Rive and Hedenstedr, expected to decrease travel times between the two cities by two thirds and nearly cut travel times to Windstrand in half.

The controversial project was approved in last year's High Speed Rail Act and will connect Rive and Windstrand to what Statistics Sondstead has described as the fastest growing city in Sondstead; In 1958, Hedenstedr had just 33,000 people and an economy mainly based on supporting the fishing and sheep farming industries. In 2008, the population had more than doubled to nearly 82,000 as the it went from the small cathedral city for eastern Sitonland to "Sondstead's Oil Capital". At present rates of growth, it will have 100,000 residents by the end of the decade.

The growth however, is heavily tied to the oil industry, leading many analysts to question it's long term sustainability, and in turn the wisdom of spending more than 13 billion krone̊n to link a city that presently has a metropolitan area of only some 150,000. The lifetime of the Northeastern Maredoratic Basin oil fields — shared between Sondstead as well as Jungastia, Morieux, Prekonate, Satafia, Vertou, and Whiskeasy — is a matter of dispute, with the most conservative estimates being three or four decades at current production all the way to industry studies claiming the fields will remain productive for two centuries or more.

"You can't build a thirteen and a half billion krone̊n railway because you have faith the traffic will be there.", said Shadow Minister for Transportation E̊sbjus Bage̊r. "Even though the gains look dramatic, 101 minutes cut off the trip from Rive, that is more than two million krone̊n spent for every second saved, even assuming the final cost doesn't go over budget, which it absolutely will. And it is all to connect what is frankly, a rather small and out of the way city. For a government that says it is in favour of fiscal restraint, this is an oversight.".

The government, however, has defended investment in transportation infrastructure for Hedenstedr as necessary.

"When you look at the twenty largest Sondsteadish cities, no other has as little transport facilities as Hedenstedr does.", said Storstrand, Bage̊r's Conservative counterpart, last month. "Rail travel takes two and a half hours from Rive and the route is highly circuitous and can not run electric trains. The airport's runway is too small for passenger jets to take off with sufficient fuel. Action was required and in terms of capacity and environmental impact, the railway plan was the best option despite it's high cost.".

The railway is planned to open in late 2017. Travel times will be 47 minutes from Rive and 2 hours 35 minutes from Windstrand, competitive with air travel when check-in times and travel from city centres to airports are factored in.

EDIT: I specifically mention the line to Hedenstedr isn't electrified and yet I use a station image with clearly visible catenary. Durp.

KMF Systems angling to sell fighter jets to Van Luxemburg
Potential deal "Most important ever for the Sondsteadish defence industry"; planes arrive in Sint Annabeek for trials

10 May 2013

Image
A KMF KL-9 Länerfälk jet of the RSoAF idles during the 2012
Bürnbrügjh Constitution Day Airshow.

Sint Annabeek —Two test aircraft were delivered for testing to the flight school of the Van Luxemburger Marine at Valkenberg Air Base, Sint Annabeek by KMF Systems today as the Sondsteadish aerospace and defence company attempts to sell the government and military of Van Luxemburg more than fifty of the high-tech KL-9 "Länerfälk" jet.

Van Luxemburg is considering purchasing a modified version of the jet used by the Royal Sondsteadish Air Force to serve on it's Arvaglio and Weiningen aircraft carriers in a deal possibly as large as 80 aircraft valued at a total of some $5.36 billion (Kr 31.3 billion) rather than purchase the stealthy but much more expensive domestic Monteluci Astore fighter. KMF has put a special emphasis on the sale; Van Luxemburg, the second largest producer of aircraft in Maredoratica after Erusea, is not traditionally an export market for other regional aerospace companies such as KMF and Aquileian/Somerseter Pearl Aerospace.

"Between the potential size of the order, which would be our largest ever export of a military aircraft, and Van Luxemburg considering our product over domestic alternatives, this sale would be very important for us.", said KMF Systems CEO Turmund Lindharlan. "If it goes through, I think it would be the most important ever for the Sondsteadish defence industry.".

Naval military aviation has been a major issue in terms of defence policy in Van Luxemburg over the past two decades; the ZMS Weiningen was plagued by delays and cost overruns and it's accompanying aircraft have also ran into problems. A modified version of the Monteluci Tifone jet proved too heavy to carry a useful load and became the subject of an acrimonious legal battle, while the Monteluci Astore, with a price tag of $145 million in 2003 was too expensive for the Marine to justify to parliament. In October 2011, KMF, Monteluci Aeronautica, and the Marine announced Van Luxemburg had taken an option for 50 KL-9 aircraft.

The two prototype aircraft, including both single seat and two seat versions, will be trialled by KMF and Van Luxemburger test pilots beginning next week, with tests including simulated aircraft carrier takeoffs and landings. If ordered, the initial aircraft will be built by KMF in Westberg with up to 50 more being assembled by Monteluci in Venezia.

Landmark deal in Esquarium to normalize Luzicya-Namor relations
Relations reestablished after six decades of conflict between two regional superpowers

12 May 2013

Image
Following a deal to normalize relations, four additional
border crossings between Luzicya and Namor will open.

Namo — In an unexpected turn of events today, Luzicyan and Namorese parliamentarians voted in favour of normalizing relations between their countries, which have been locked in an ideological conflict for the past sixty-three years.

While the normalization resolutions, which were passed by each country's legislature and signed by Luzicyan President Breuvi Shjoraski and Namorese President Alicia Wolf today, represent a major step forward in a peace process in Esquarium, significant obstacles remain, mostly due to continued Namorese jurisdiction over the regions of Upper Zokoria and West Chorea (which Luzicya claims belong to the sovereign states of Chorea and Zokoria, respectively) and of the ethnically mixed region they call Oteki (referred to officially as Txotai) which was, between 1966 and 1970, an independent republic backed by Luzicya.

Both Presidents, while cautiously supporting the normalization, traded jabs in the press as it went through; Shjoraski proclaimed of the bill "as I sign it, I must state that their continued occupation over Upper Zokoria, West Chorea and Oteki shall not be tolerated.", and Wolf fired back, tempering her enthusiasm by proclaiming "the Luziycan government does [sic] provide for its own general welfare, and is still intruding into our internal affairs and acting like a bunch of consumerist wage drones".

Nevertheless, the deal will result in the Luzicyan government ceasing to recognize the exiled government of the Republic of Namor which they had previously supported, as well as allow portions of the border wall separating the countries to be destroyed and replaced by four designated points of entry between Luzicya and Namor. The Luzicyan government will also provide grants to companies willing to invest in Namor.

"This is a monumental step in establishing peace in the Esquarian region.", said Söfja Cheung, the Sondsteadish ambassador to Namor when asked for comment via satellite. "With the level of tensions between the two countries, any step would have been a good step, and it is heartening to see the first step towards peace be such a substantive one.".

Kle̊mssunr to retire as party leader and MPA
Centre Liberal Party leader will not seek nomination at August party conference

4 June 2013

Image
Deputy PM, Interior Minister, and CLP leader Rübert Kle̊ms-
-sunr today announced his intention not to seek reelection.

Asteriopol — Speaking with reporters, Centre Liberal Party leader Rübert Kle̊mssunr confirmed earlier reports that he would not seek renomination as his party's head at the upcoming party congress scheduled for 16 through 18 August and will also not seek reelection as Member of People's Assembly for Fürteck in the October federal elections.

The 24-year veteran of the People's Assembly and party leader since 2004 celebrated his 58th birthday last month, and took care to make clear that his retirement from politics was motivated by personal concerns and had no connection to his role in ushering through Organisation for Economic Advancement membership in March and the beginning of formal Sondsteadish negotiations to join the Maredoratic League last month.

"Is 58 still young?", Kle̊mssunr asked, rhetorically quizzing reporters. "I don't feel young anymore. I served for a long time and I greatly enjoyed and valued the opportunity to represent my community, but can I stay forever? I don't think I can. This isn't about poll numbers.".

Kle̊mssunr's popularity among some in the party base took a hit after he threw his support behind internationalist measures in support of the Lindkwist cabinet, in which he serves as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Interior. When asked about his experience in the Lindkwist cabinet, he defended the decisions as "not a threat to neutrality" and stressed that he and his party had pushed hard for a referendum to be scheduled on Maredoratic League membership, which was ultimately made a part of the agreement approved by parliament last week.

"It's not fair at all to call Kle̊mssunr a sellout", said fellow CLP parliamentary Hugo Bisjop, a backbencher. "A bigger part of his legacy than helping get negotiations through to join the Maredoratic League, something I personal do not think we should do, is that he was a great help in making sure that we at least have a vote on it. Some of those people who are pushing this wanted to get it down our throat before we could say if we wanted it not not."

Kle̊mssunr's decision not to seek renomination leaves the convention, barely more than two months away, open, with early speculation suggesting Defence Minister Elfred Wirt, CLP Senate leader Kärina Lumière et Karlsburh, and Agricultural Minister Wiktorja Ingjessünr as potential candidates.

Both Kle̊mssunr's staff and the Prime Minister's Office confirmed that Kle̊mssunr is expected to hold his cabinet positions until after October's federal elections.

BoF 52: National team snags early victory
Sondstead beats Carrizal 1–0 with second half goal from Markussunr

5 June 2013

Image
Team captain Tom Markussunr won the first match
with a highly professional, well-placed 2nd half goal.

Rexitova, Kinitaria — After a hard fought game, the Sondsteadish national football team won their debut Baptism of Fire match one to nothing against the United States of Carrizal at the Arena "Spartak" in Rexitova, Kinitaria.

The game started with cautious defensive moves on both sides but the two teams quickly found their respective rhythms by the middle of the first half, with the Carizzal team going on the offensive and the Sondsteadish defence, especially the team's wunderkind defender László Agócs, holding up admirably.

However, E̊sbjus Hwitrländer tripped at 19 minutes in and suffered an injury; while he attempted to return to the field after several minutes resting, he fell again at 35 minutes in and was replaced by Jöhännes Muharukua, with doctors diagnosing the 35-year old player with a high ankle sprain exacerbated by his decision to return to the field and gave him unfortunate news; his recovery is expected to take three months at least, putting him out of commission for the rest of the Baptism of Fire and also for the World Cup even if the Sondsteadish team is able to qualify.

The second half got off to a roaring start, but not necessarily a favourable one for Sondstead; at 51 minutes, midfielder Szelim Nagy was booked for what the referee judged to have been faking a foul, and responded by making a "Fityisz" (also known as "Fig sign") at the referee. The game continued for several minutes before the referee was informed of the offensive connotations of the sign in Erusean culture (Nagy being an ethnic Erusean), which was judged to have constituted an obscene gesture and lead to Nagy being given a red card and replaced by Osgar Sarman.

The back and forth continued nearly to the 70 minute mark with no scoring, until a well placed shot by the team's captain and longtime midfield star Tom Markussunr at 68 minutes made it past the Carrizal defence. The Sondsteadish team switched to the offensive and hit back, but Kalju Rummo committed a foul at 83 minutes and gave Carizzal an easy chance to equalize the score at the last minute in the penalty kick. Goalkeeper Adam Edelwülfssünr made an unexpected save and the disheartened Carizzal team had no time to recover, with the game reaching full time with the score still one point in Sondstead's favour.

The finish thrilled Sondsteadish fans and left Sondstead at a respectable twenty-second out of fifty-eight in the Casaran standings. The team's enthusiasm for the victory was somewhat dampened by news that Sondstead had been matched up with Neu Engollon for their second game; Neu Engollon defeated their first opponent, Joshulia, four to nothing and was ranked first in the Casaran standings.

BoF 52: Dissappointment in the air for Sondstead at Litora
High spirits dashed as team handed a clean sheet by Neu Engollon

6 June 2013

Image
Mihäel Hömmel reacts to the goal scored by Neu Engollon's Brenz.

Litora, Kinitaria — In their second game of the Baptism of Fire tournament, the Sondsteadish team and it's fans entered with high hopes but left humbled after a two to nil loss against Neu Engollon.

The team entered with morale being slightly worse for wear with veteran defender E̊sbjus Hwitrländer suffering a cup-ending sprain ankle in the first game of the tournament for Sondstead and unsubstantiated rumours swirling before the game that Hwitrländer was on the verge of announcing his retirement from football following the injury, as well as embarrassment caused by midfielder Szelim Nagy's already infamous "Twitter meltdown". With both players out, the game began with Durante Abandonato and Kristjan E̊sbjussunr substituting for them, respectively.

At only 6 minutes in, Neu Engollon's captain Joachim Brenz scored the first goal of the game with a powerful shot despite a valiant effort by László Agócs and Äster Bage̊r-Lusjanssunr to block him. Neu Engollon continued to play a highly aggressive game which the Sondsteadish defence managed to hold off despite it's ferocity for the rest of the first half.

The game resumed with Neu Engollon continuing their offensive. However, their aggressiveness backfired somewhat at 57 minutes in when Neu Engollon's wunderkind striker Erich Siebach tripped Sondstead's Jen Weäldrberg, with the referee granting Sondstead a free kick. Coach Tomas Rum chose to substitute in Gamal Karimi in place of Weäldrberg, and gave Karimi the free kick. Karimi made a strong curling shot, but one which proved to be off target by several centimetres, striking the side of the net.

The Sondsteadish team returned to the field further demoralized, and despite a continued strong Sondsteadish defence Siebach scored Neu Engollon's second goal of the game at 70 minutes in, leaving Sondstead scrambling to catch up in the last twenty minutes. Sondstead went on the offensive in the last minutes, but desperation seemed to set in, with the Sondsteadish plays growing frantic and team making several unfortunate slip-ups, with the game reaching full time at two to nil having seen no further change in the score.

"We might have got a little cocky after our first match", said defender Durante Abandonato. "We though 'if we do well against Neu Engollon, we can do well against anyone.'. But we didn't pull it off. It's something that happens. If we can pick back up, we still have a chance to get into the knockout stage.".

Following the disheartening results and with flights to catch north to Legalese, the Sondsteadish team and fans filtered out quickly. Sondstead's first matchup in Legalese will be Europa Brittania, a middling team, with the Green and Red side holding 22nd in the Casaran rankings. To make it into the knockout stage of the tournament Sondstead will need to improve their ranking to 16th at the minimum.

BoF 52: Odds improving for Sondstead after strong victory
2–0 victory over Chiata; fans and team in high spirits, expect Sondstead to make the championship stage

9 June 2013

Jen Weäldrberg celebrates after scoring the first goal of the night.

Legalese — With last night's clean sheet victory over Chiata, Sondstead has now broken into the top ten in the Casaran rankings, and after two strong victories hopes are running high for Sondstead to advance past the Casaran stage of the tournament.

With the team once again adopting a more offence-oriented 4-3-3 formation with Mark Rikjardssunr filling in for E̊sbjus Hwitrländer and Jöhän Winter substituting for Mihäel Hömmel on the midfield, the game started off with a strong Sondsteadish offence, but one which smashed up against Chiata's defensive focus and 5-3-2 formation. It took nearly half an hour of back and forth before Jen Weäldrberg scored at 22 minutes in, after which Chiata subbed in Nate Seal for defender Keo Yales. As he did the night before, Agócs got into the zone quickly and stole the show on defence, despite several close calls from Chiata forwards Sammy Swade and Joe Ringer-Toso.

Just before halftime, Sondstead scored a second goal at 39 minutes courtesy of Karl Sude̊rman, entering halftime at what would ultimately be the game's final score of two nil. As they had the night before, the team came back out in their traditional 4-4-2 diamond formation, with Kalju Rummo returning to the bench and Möhmet Dale̊r being brought out onto the midfield, while Chiata benched Ringer-Toso in favour of Rick Vickerson. The focus for Sondstead switched to holding on to the lead in the second half.

The Sondsteadish defence remained strong, with Agócs, Eskola, and Rikjardssunr continuing to work like clockwork. Äster Bage̊r-Lusjanssunr, however, suffered a broken nose from headbutt gone awry at 62 minutes and was replaced by Durante Abandonato. Following the resumption of play, Gamal Karimi fouled Chiata midfielder Kay Granger at 64 minutes, with the referee granting Chiata direct free kick which was taken by Swade. Adam Edelwülfssünr however was able to just barely block the ball, keeping the score at two nil. The back and forth continued straight up to full time, with a valiant attempt by Swade to score almost reaching it's mark at 89 minutes, finishing the game with a dramatic but ultimately unsuccessful flourish.

Tonight Sondstead will face the German-Spanish Empire in the final matchday of the Casaran stage of the tournament. The German-Spanish team is ranked eighth, immediately ahead of Sondstead, and the game's outcome could determine which team advances past the Casaran stage.

World Cup 65: Sondstead opens qualifiers with draw in Quebec
1–1 draw in away game against Royal Kingdom of Quebec; Karimi scores dramatic goal

20 June 2013

St. John's, Royal Kingdom of Quebec — With the kickoff of the qualifying round of the 65th World Cup, Sondstead played the Royal Kingdom of Quebec's "Grim Reapers" to a draw last night in Montreal.

Against the extraordinarily offence-oriented team, Sondstead started the match in their characteristic 4-4-2 diamond, eschewing the 4-3-3 starting formation which won them a strong finish against several teams in the Baptism of Fire. Against the constant Quebecois offence, the Sondsteadish team started out doubling down on their defence, and fortunately it held up well, with star defender László Agócs keeping his cool throughout as usual. The aggressive Quebecois play however quickly payed off, with the team's captain, Thunderbolt Han, scoring the first goal of the game at 15 minutes in, prompting the Sondsteadish team to move their midfielders into a more defensive posture to hold off the assault.

Despite cold and rainy weather in St. John's, both teams, hailing from cold-weather countries, performed well even as the pitch became bogged down in mud. However, the mud slowed the Quebecois team's lightning offence later in the game. While the Sondsteadish team was also affected, the slower pace gave them a measure of breathing room entering the second half.

The Sondsteadish team reentered the pitch having benched a tired out Jen Weäldrberg in favour of Gamal Karimi, and attempted a slightly more offensive strategy in a rush to equalize the score. This resulted in an error on the part of Kalju Rummo, who was judged to have committed an offside offence after playing the ball, granting an indirect free kick to the Quebecois side. Young Quebecois forward Hong Chun Joo however kicked the ball into his own side's goal due to the strong winds on the pitch, granting Sondstead a corner kick. Gamal Karimi took the corner at 61 minutes in and kicked the ball with all his might. The strong winds again affected the course of the game, and the ball sailed straight into the Quebecois goal from 110 metres.

The wind continued to make play highly unpredictable, dashing prospects of additional goals for Kalju Rummo at 70 minutes, Riley Johnson at 74 minutes, and Osgar Sarman's last minute attempt at 86 minutes, and the game concluded with the score still at an even 1-1, to the disappointment of many fans on both sides of the stadium.

Tonight Sondstead will play another qualifier, hosting international football newcomer Narsora in Windstrand.

World Cup 65: Second victory for Sondstead in Aquitayne
1–0 victory on third matchday; team's first female player gets a chance to play

22 June 2013

Windstrand — Following up a victory over Narsora two nights ago, the Sondsteadish team snagged a second win over Aquitayne.

The team's manager Tomas Rum for the third time in a row chose to start with a 4-4-2 diamond formation for the home game in Windstrand. The starting lineup was slightly changed from the ordinary, with Lars Kronbe̊re̊r filling in for Õspjuus Eskola on defence and Arjus Henrikjrssünr filling in for Osgar Sarman on the midfield. As the Narsora team was, the Aquitayne team was something of an enigma before the game, and the Sondsteadish team started out cautiously.

By KPB rankings, Sondstead entered the game as, on paper, the superior team. However, the Sondsteadish defence fought off two early close shots by Aquitayne at 12 minutes and 20 minutes, before Jen Weäldrberg scored at 25 minutes. However, a second goal by Kalju Rummo at 34 minutes was invalidated as an offside offence, with Aquitayne being granted an indirect free kick. The Sondsteadish defence held up for the remainder of the first half despite this.

After halftime, Kalju Rummo was benched. In a historic moment, Tomas Rum substituted Katie Ästerssünr, the team's first female player, for Kalju Rummo on offence and went with a more offence-oriented strategy in the second half, hoping for a stronger victory than the slight disappointment against Narsora. While the Sondsteadish offence and midfield played well, Aquitayne doubled down on defence in a last ditch effort to block any additional Sondsteadish goals. Both teams came close to scoring additional goals, including Ästerssünr coming within centimetres of scoring a second goal for Sondstead at 72 minutes in, but ultimately the game reached full time still at one nil.

Sondstead, playing away, will face Sangti in the city of Baoyam this evening.

World Cup 65: Tough match ends in Sondsteadish disappointment
Sondstead loses against The Sovan Antithesis 3–2 in Bankstead

24 June 2013

Bankstead — Returning home, Sondstead faced The Sovan Antithesis last night in the World Cup qualifiers hoping to recover after a loss against Sangti, only to face disappointment despite a strong, fast-paced match.

The game kicked off with Sondstead in their typical 4-4-2 diamond formation and lineup against the offence-skewed Sovan Antithesis team, which immediately launched into a series of furious attacks, with the forward "71013" (the names of the Sovan players have not been published) scoring a goal at just 6 minutes in. Their lack of defence however allowed Sondstead to quickly equalize the score, with Jen Weäldrberg doing so at 17 minutes in. The Sondsteadish defence soon adjusted to the lightning speed of the Sovan players and kept every Sovan shot out for the remainder of the first half. Sondstead even managed to pull ahead, with Kalju Rummo scoring a second goal at 39 minutes.

After halftime, Sondstead struggled to keep up with the Sovans, with "43903" and "83303" scoring in quick succession at 57 and 61 minutes, first equalizing and then pulling ahead as the game headed into the final half hour. Despite a valiant defence on the part of the Sondsteadish team which succeeded in blocking nearly a dozen Sovan shots, the pace gave Sondstead no time to both defend and push ahead, and the team was itself unable to score an equalizing goal, although Karl Sude̊rman came heartbreakingly close at 81 minutes, and the game reached full time still at three to two in favour of the Sovans.

Every further team Sondstead will face until the mid-qualifing break day is now ranked well above Sondstead in the KPB tables, starting with 18th ranked in the world Wight tomorrow away.

World Cup 65: Fans and team "humiliated" by loss
2–0 loss against Saintland sparks protests, rioting in Windstrand; "Our mutual disgust was palpable"

28 June 2013

Image
City police stand watch in Eästerkjirkjh
during one of the worst instances of
hooliganism in recent decades.

Windstrand — Facing Saintland at Eästerkjirkjh Stadium, Sondstead suffered a clean sheet loss, turning protests against Saintland's totalitarian government into uncharacteristic rioting, described as among the worst instances of hooliganism in the recent history of Sondsteadish football.

Before the game even began, the visiting team faced protests from the locals expressing solidarity with the banned human rights organizations Feministus Sanctusterra and Vindicta Progressum. Thousands of football fans and protestors held placards along the route between Nörditser airport and the team's hotel, with some female protestors chose to go topless in protest of the country's subjugation of women. The size of the protests were deemed to make a federal police escort necessary, although the federal government stressed it's support for the protestors' right to make their opinions known.

"In a free country there are no rights more sacrosanct than free speech, and we have every intention of allowing peaceful protest to continue.", said interior minister Rübert Kle̊mssunr "Furthermore I personally sympathize with much of what is being expressed, a view which I believe the government shares. However, these protests must remain peaceful and non-disruptive.".

The Sondsteadish team appeared to support the protests itself on the pitch, with the entire team donning pink armbands in sympathy and with Katie Ästerssünr — the team's first female player — filling in for Jen Weäldrberg in the team's 4-3-3 formation. Karl E̊nokssunr filled in for Adam Edelwülfssünr as keeper and Möhmet Dale̊r filled in for Karl Sude̊rman on the midfield. Sondstead started with an offence-focused strategy against the more defensive Saintland team.

Quickly though, it became apparent that Sondstead was outclassed by Saintland, with Saintlander forward Stephanus Vagionius scoring at 16 minutes in, despite playing in a more defence-heavy 5-3-1-1 formation. Afterwards, Sondstead scrambled to hold off Saintland; a well-placed shot from Tom Markussunr at 30 minutes set up Ästerssünr for a crucial possible goal opportunity, but was judged to have been an offside offence, granting a corner kick to Saintland, which was taken by Prince Andreas, passing to Nicolaus Poenius. E̊nokssunr barely managed to block Poenius's shot.

From then on, Sondstead was left disorganized and scrambling to hold off an aggressive offence from Saintland. Following halftime, the Sondsteadish team returned to the pitch in a 4-4-2 formation, with Kalju Rummo returning to the bench in favour of midfielder Arjus Henrikjrssünr. From the start, Saintland went on the offensive with Sondstead attempting to hang on. Soon after the beginning of the second Poenius scored a second goal (and Andreas scored an assist) at 56 minutes in, leaving Sondstead unlikely to be able to catch up. Despite Sondstead managing to narrowly hold off Saintland for the rest of the second half, they were unable to score a single goal of their own, ending the game with a clean sheet loss.

"We were humiliated.", said Katie Ästerssünr in a post game interview. "Teams like Karditan or Wight I could've lost to and still respected them, but as a woman, I have very little respect for Saintland. If any.".

Even before the Sondstead fans exited the stadium, the atmosphere had turned uglier, with some fans chanting mocking slogans describing Iulietta Perquitienus (best known as a singer for Cantus Virginum, a girl group extremely popular in Saintland) as "frigid" and "self-hating".

"It was clear that the Saintlander fans were not enjoying Sondstead and that our fans did not like the visitors.", one spectator said of the crowed. "Our mutual disgust was palpable.".

Both the opposing team and it's fans were heckled as they exited the stadium, and angered Sondsteadish fans, numbering in the hundreds and many of them intoxicated, blocked some of the roads around the stadium, set fire to cars and buildings, and clashed with police and visiting fans, requiring a further federal police escort for the Saintland team's motorcade. Many rioters also expressed solidarity with student protestors in Brunswick-Swabia. Following rumours that the team would be escorted to Nörditser airport to leave the country early, protestors rushed to the airport, proclaiming they would not allow the team to leave and demanding Prince Andreas be tried as an accomplice to human rights abuses as a son of Saintland's ruling monarch.

Presently, the Saintland team remains in Windstrand according to the Ministry for the Interior.

Kle̊mssunr: World Cup protests "a grave disappointment"
Interior minister apologizes for conduct of Sondsteadish fans; confirms Saintland team "Safely exited the country"

29 June 2013

Image
Interior Minister Rübert Kle̊mssunr addressed Thursday's
incident of hooliganism in a press conference this morning.

Windstrand — At a press conference this morning, Minister for the Interior Rübert Kle̊mssunr expressed disappointment with the actions of the home team fans following Thursday's home match against Saintland during the World Cup qualifiers.

"The conduct shown was a grave disappointment.", Kle̊mssunr said. "It was not the conduct we condoned when we said we would not interfere with peaceful protests. I don't think there is any question of that. It is saddening to me that we did not live up to our reputation as a welcoming and hospitable country, due to a small group of anarchists and petty criminals who instigated this. I have been informed by the municipal government that over one hundred arrests have been made and that any anarchist instigators will be found and given a trial. However, I will also reiterate that the right to peacefully protest is one we hold sacrosanct and we will not infringe upon it based on the desires of a relatively insignificant, geopolitically speaking, foreign country.".

Kle̊mssunr also responded to calls from a group of protestors that Prince Andreas, a son of Saintland's ruling monarch and captain-manager of the country's national football team, be detained and put on trial.

"There is an understanding of trust between World Cup participants and there is an understanding that it is not a time for politics. It would be a breach of that to arrest a player except for criminal offences committed on Sondsteadish soil.".

The Saintland team's departure was delayed by security concerns, particularly a group of protestors who camped in the terminals at Nörditser airport. However, Kle̊mssunr confirmed that the team had left the country.

"The Saintland players and fans were able to safely exit the country. Beyond the localized rioting in parts of Windstrand City on the evening following the match, we recorded no violence against any of the guests, and visiting fans were able to leave the country normally. To avoid any further disturbance however, the visiting players were escorted by rail to Pedershefn and their jet was allowed to fly to the air base there. Afterwards the team exited the country from Pedershefn yesterday.".

Following the conference, SRR questioned Kle̊mssunr about allegations Saintland was prepared to use military force to extract the team.

"While this is not under the purview of my department, it is my opinion that those claims [made by King Paulus XV] were useless bluster; the situation was never nearly as serious as it was made out to be. It is laughable that they claimed it was a situation which warranted an international coalition against Sondstead. More believeable statements have been made by Prekonati or Milogradian propaganda agencies; it's like something out of a parody skit.".

World Cup 65: Much needed, if marginal, victory over Narsora
Playing at home, Sondstead scores another 1–0 victory over Narsora

30 June 2013

Bankstead — Playing their last game in Bankstead for this cycle's qualifiers, Sondstead failed to capitalize on an early lead, but still bagged a much desired victory, although not particularly impressive, victory.

The Sondsteadish side opened their second match against football newcomers Narsora in an offence-oriented 4-3-3 formation as expected, and went on the offensive right from the kickoff. The barrage got slightly out of hand however when Kalju Rummo fouled one of the Narsoran midfielders at 11 minutes and was sent off. Rummo seemed genuinely remorseful over the incident, and appeared to apologize to the player on the field.

Play restarted with Bart Goodman taking the field in place of Rummo, and Sondstead took a slightly more cautious tack before seemingly settling into their rhythm. Approximately a quarter of the way through the match, Tom Markussunr initiated an offensive, passing to Mihäel Hömmel. Hömmel and Karl Sude̊rman pushed forward, with Hömmel passing to Gamal Karimi, who scored the first goal of the game at 27 minutes in. Ultimately it would be the only goal of the night.

Sondstead stayed on the offensive the rest of the first half, but failed to find an opening to score. By halftime, the score remained at one to nil, and Sondstead, unusually, came back out still playing in a 4-3-3 formation. However, Mihäel Hömmel was benched in favour of more defensive midfielder Kristjan E̊sbjussunr — a more minor change than manager Tomas Rum has been choosing lately. It was apparent that the team was hoping to score a strong victory, both to pick up a more respectable standing in the tables and to assuage fans disappointed at a streak of losses and ties.

Sondstead continued it's offensive, but the Narsora team held up admirably in the face of the Sondsteadish team. The game entered a dramatic back and forth phase, and with Narsora coming uncomfortably close to equalizing the score, the team seemed to be regretting not changing their formation more substantially, but had no opportunity to make an additional substitution. The best defence for the situation proved to be a good offence, with the Sondsteadish forwards forced to stay on the offence to prevent Narsora from having an opportunity to score. Nevertheless, Sondstead failed to score another goal by full time, and the game ended at a one nil win.

Tomorrow night Sondstead plays Aquitayne away.

Van Luxemburg: Lurani reaches coalition deal with Fassbinder's PFD
LDG/PFD coalition agreement to "put Fassbinder in the driver's seat with regards to foreign policy"

4 July 2013

Luxembourg — Following two and a half months of negotiations, Liberalen Demokratesche Group leader Alessandro Lurani reached a deal yesterday with the upstart Partéi fir Fortschrëtt and Demokrätie and it's leader Mathias Fassbinder to form a coalition holding a strong majority in the Zweete Zëmmer — 192 seats out of 300 — with Fassbinder's interventionist PFD holding key foreign policy positions.

General elections in mid April had created a difficult situation in the country's parliament, with few plausible coalition options. This left Lurani's moderate LDG with no choice but to seek a deal with Fassbinder's right-populist PFD. Both parties struggled to reach an agreement, particularly with regard to foreign policy — perhaps the PFD's most radical policy is their proposal to dismantle the country's traditional and constitutionally enshrined foreign policy neutrality.

Ultimately, the agreement placed the PFD in a strong position within the government to decide foreign policy matters — Fassbinder himself was appointed Deputy Premier as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs, while PFD members where also given Ministry of Defence (Philippe Dermont) and Ministry of Economic Affairs (Hendrik-Jan de Vries). Due to Van Luxemburg's substantial foreign economic influence, the later is a fairly important position with regards to foreign policy as well as domestic economic policy. The agreement also specified that a referendum on repealing the neutrality clause will be held before the end of the month.

"Fassbinder held out and managed to get much of what him and his party wanted.", said Tödrikjr Ärtemssünr, a leading analyst at the Sondsteadish Maredoratic Institute. "He gets his referendum when he wants it. Presently his polls show 69% in favour of repealing neutrality but nobody expects that to hold, so Fassbinder wanted to expedite a referendum. He also gets several key ministries. The coalition deal will effectively put Fassbinder in the driver's seat with regards to foreign policy.".

With the new government taking office today, one of it's first actions was to grant parliamentary approval to a deal to purchase eighty F/A-9E "Lanario" fighter jets for the Van Luxemburger Marine. The Lanario airplane is an advanced technology derivative of the KL-9 currently used by the Sondsteadish armed forces and is produced by Sondsteadish KMF Systems in cooperation with Monteluci Aeronautica, their Van Luxemburger partner.
