World Lacrosse Championships 14 - Everything Thread

Here we are again, the World Lacrosse Championships, the biggest stage there is for global lacrosse and often what is one of the best tournaments for RP quality on NS. Hopefully this continues this time around as the tournament is brought to Mytannion.

If we reach 32 teams, there will be eight groups of four with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout rounds. If we stick with 30 then we'll go with six groups of five with the top two progressing and the four teams with the best group stage records getting byes to the quarter finals. The group draw will be conducted on IRC at around 1830 GMT on #nssport tomorrow and will be posted to this thread shortly after.

Manager's Report
The most interesting aspect of this team is that I have selected two women to represent our national team as they impressed in our national tryouts, Tihana Zupan of Partisan L.C. and Mirela Kasun of RNK LC Split. Due to the relative lack of playing experience in the case of Zupan and the strength at goal of Milan Radic; both are backups on this roster. I don't expect a deep run with this team as they're unproven in international play, but there's been bigger upsets and surprises in the past World Lacrosse Championships. The bench is rather deep and can withstand some injuries to the starters without much of a loss of production. Dragic is good enough to start on some other national teams and the low attack overall is high scoring at least in test sessions against some of the Serbian Empire's top club teams. Defensively, the team is rather questionable outside of goaltender. The slogan for this Championship is "Show them we are not afraid of nothing" which is the national slogan.

Manager's Report:

Everything has gone well today. Was able to get in about 2 hours worth of practice with the team before the snow started to fall and accumulate making the surface rather unplayable as one ca. The team and myself will be flying out of Beograd's Tesla Airport tomorrow morning. Be sure to pack all the equipment and everything we will need for at least a couple weeks. Remember to show them we are not afraid of nothing. The first match is against #46 Soviet Canuckistan on December 12th. The other teams are unranked in this Group so it's a wide open experience and have a decent shot at making the group of 16. I'm just glad that our team isn't in Group E as Civil Citizenry is the world's number #1 team in this and everyone else is fighting for a distant second in that group to the group of 16. So the goal is to make the group of 16 and possibly to the quarter finals. That's where we'd run into major problems with teams in the top #25 which we have little chance of defeating at least in our debut. And as an unranked team with no true superstar, we're a serious long-shot after that point.

Mytanar National Lacrosse Team.

The #9 ranked Mytanar team will be looking to win their first World Lacrosse Championships since WLC 9 and they can't think of a better place to do it than in their home nation, as they host the 14th edition of the Championships. They've got player-manager and legend, Milo Tyrella marshaling the team and the catalyst of the WLC 9 victory will hope to lead his team to another victory here. They've certainly got their fairly high ranking for a reason and wish to back that up in this tournament.

The squad is made-up largely of Aboriginal Rushmoris and Aboriginal Cotdelapomais, the latter having moved over to Mytannion in order to gain citizenship and then to compete in the squad for this World Lacrosse Championship. The Aboriginal feel isn't anything new though, they made-up a large section of previous rosters and of course, they were the main stay in the storied Cotdelapomais side that came so close to winning championships on a few occasions.

While the nation waits for news on the 63rd annual football world cup, a bit a news has come off of the Skarakian sporting front! The Nation Skarakian Lacrosse team has been drawn in group F for the 14th World Lacrosse Championships! Along with the nations of Thatius, Licentiapacisterra, and Farfadillis, the competition to get into the later portion of the championship is bound to be fierce. Under the leadership of Amadeus Olafsen, top goal scorer in the Skarakian Lacrosse League, the Eagles are hoping to make at least through the group rounds.

"We are confident in our abilities, and hope to make some sort of impact in the sporting world." Said the coach. "We run the 23 very very well."

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2013 | LACROSSE | by Andros Benes

Cities across Mytannion are preparing for the arrival of thousands of lacrosse fans from around the world as the nation plays host to the 14th edition of the World Lacrosse Championships.

Five cities across Mytannion have been rewarded the right to host games from the tournament, with six stadiums spread across those cities including the brand new National Lacrosse Centre in the Ouverjavaa District of Esca - which will be the biggest stadium in the tournament - with a capacity of 16,000, the shiny new stadium has what is being called 'safe standing areas' as arenas across Mytannion attempt to modernise and improve the safety of standing areas compared to the terraces of old.

The new stadium is one of the pretty nondescript new stadiums, all concrete, glass and steel. It is however exceedingly modern and has excellent amenities for players that will be competing there. The national team isn't even being allowed to play there yet, the final is set to be the grand opening of the new stadium which heralds a return to the glory days of Mytanar lacrosse as it is surrounded by the (also) new National Centre of Excellence for Lacrosse, where youngsters from across the country can attend to improve their ability and try to get a team that was of the level of the team that entered WLC 9 and won it all.

The tournament has 32 nations involved, 16 will come to Mytannion for the knockout rounds and will compete in cities such as Esca, Thessia, Miago, Ebor and Istocna Obala. AP will be producing a stadium and city guide for visitors who will be travelling to support their team in this tournament.

World Lacrosse Championships 14 is set to start tonight, the first group stage matches being played across the globe, the highlights including Mytannion vs Mapletish and current world number one team Civil Citizenry competing against the lowly Grandcott Islands.

This is your first RP cut-off for the World Lacrosse Championships.

Manager's Report

We pulled off the upset winning 20-15 against a ranked team, this all but assures us that we will at least be contending at the top of the Group C standings. We actually brought out some of the backups on offense and at goalkeeper as to give them experience in the competition. There was one injury to Marijo Bogusevic that appears to be minor. Tomorrow's match is against Afrinesia, the weakest team offensively in the Group C bracket. The team may be weak, but they're a threat as we don't exactly have a ranking to intimidate them with.

One for one!

The National Skarakian Lacrosse team has opened up Skarakia's grand entry into international sports with a win over the Thatius lacrosse team! With a 17-13 win over their opponents, the Eagles are currently on top of their group, by goal differential. After the teams shook hands and gave each other props for a good game, the Skarakians ran back to their locker-room and cracked open the champagne. Cheers and highfives not only took place in the locker-room, but throughout pubs across the nation as the population watched a Skarakian National team play their first game ever internationally.

Assistant Captain Jerome Wardsson summarized the team's attitude after this win. "It feels good. You know? We had the whole nation watching us, and we were able to give our people something to cheer about."

The captain, however, is a bit more focused.

"I thought we played well today." said Matthew Paul who scored 7 goals, and had 4 assists. "We went out, executed our 23 offense, and were able to win in this shootout. We need to look forward to the next game though, no time to get drunk tonight; we need to review film."

Coach Amadeus Olafsen echoed the captain's thoughts. "I agree, it feels good to get the first ever win under our belt. But we need to look to the future. Our defense needs some patchwork. There were too many missed slides today. I'm focused on fixing that."

Late fightback not enough for Hoops.
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2013 | LACROSSE | by Andros Benes

Mytannion lost their opener in the World Lacrosse Championships, falling 16-13 at home to Mapletish at Cirdom Playing Fields. A late four goal streak from Jorma Wuori was not enough as Mapletish scored two more to put the game out of reach in the final four minutes. Wuori scored six in the game as he repeatedly came off the bench to shock the away team.

Milo Tyrella marshaled his troops fairly well, the tactics machine working decently with the quick 'rush' attacks aiming to get the ball upfield quickly to try and get as many opportunities as possible. It did seem like the players were slightly ill-suited to these tactics however as only two domestic teams really play in a similar style, Origin and West Nasto.

Natanael Sannes of the Origin team was the stand out performer as he scored three and assisted in five other goals and really played in a combative way on the field, marking tightly and making several important interceptions. It wasn't enough however as Martie Gib scored eight in the game and really carried his team to their opening day victory against the host nation.

It is expected that Tyrella may bench himself for the next game and give a debut to young Veijo Suhtinen who is a pacier option who can really trouble defensemen with his speed and control when he has the ball. It is also expected that Skurdal will be given a more offensive role whilst Sannes will be told to play slightly deeper in order to spot opposition plays and point them out to his team mates.

Mytannion play Lymantatia next and will be expecting a victory as they try to recover from their opening day loss.

Manager's Report

The Serbian Empire National Team has won it's second game in a row and one of 7 undefeated teams in the Championship. The score was significantly lower than in the first game with a 13-10 win over Afrinesia. The injury to Bogusevic has been revealed to be an aggravation of turf toe and he will be out for the game against Estope. Tihana Zupan will be his replacement and has produced 3 goals off of the bench against Soviet Canuckistan and a goal today against Afrinesia. Estope has produced as many goals as allowed and is one of the stronger unranked teams overall. "Show them we are not afraid of nothing" is definitely working and explains why the team has produced this strong run so far.

Two for two!

Coming off of last night's celebrations, the team regained their focus. In a 12-9 victory over Farfadillis, the Eagles have kept their dominance over their group, but only by the skin of their noses.

Nearing the end of the game, and being down 9-6, the Eagles' defense decided to finally shore up its holes. Holding the opponents scoreless in the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, and having the offense score 6 unanswered, helped lead the Eagles to victory.

"It was a rather fine match I would say" Said captain Matthew Paul, "a classic comeback victory."

"It was really tense." said Coach Olafsen "I was getting pretty frustrated, and I threatened to pull all of my starters."

The team will be heading back to their locker room, feeling pretty confident, but the Matthew Paul assured us that they would not feel over confident.

Sannes show strikes down Lymantatia.

Natanael Sannes, 31 year old midfielder for Origin team in the MNLL greatly improved his international stock with an outstanding performance against Lymantatia. 5 goals and 5 assists from the elder statesman of the team really pushed the Hoops onto victory in this game and got the Mytanar team's campaign back on track after they lost their opening game.

A seven minute salvo from Sannes was the key as he scored three in quick succession to get Mytannion up by five going into the last few minutes of the game. A 16-11 lead really was big at this stage as Lymantatia had started to fight back and started to get a real foothold in the game as they had scored four unanswered goals before that.

Tyrella was really pleased with his captain's performances, "Natanael is key to the side, he understands the way we play and even though he was playing deeper than usual he still really contributed in the game, scoring from range and chipping in with five direct assists." The player-manager Tyrella will be out for the rest of the group stage with a slight twinge in his right hamstring. "Yeah it's a shame but it means I can focus on managing the team in the group stage."

Veijo Sutinen was also injured early on in the game against Lymantatia although the full extent of his injury isn't known yet.
