It's a fair question, and one which is being asked more and more in recent years. The Royal Kingdom of Maltropia, Paradoxia's northernmost nation, has long been relatively inaccessible to nations outside the region, and hostile to many of those within. But with relative peace restored to northern Paradoxia in recent years, Maltropia has looked beyond her borders and across the wide waters of the Oceanus Universalis, and what it has seen is potential trade. The many deep-water ports the nation boasts are all capable of handling large amounts of cargo and open to foreign ships and trade. Any number of airports provide regular flights throughout the nation, while larger facilities link Maltropia to the rest of Paradoxia and to the world. Several motorway networks, both state- and private-owned, connect Maltropia's major cities and run overland to prosperous Northern Bigfootia and Ishgar. A number of major rail service-providers operate routes about the nation and provide transportation among ports, cities and neighbouring states.
Perhaps most relevantly, businesses in Maltropia, regardless of where they are headquartered, are not subject to any state taxation or tariffs, nor will they ever be under the current government.
Why should I invest in Maltropia?
Maltropia's economy has never been more successful than it is now, with rapid growth of its international corporations and the entry of numerous foreign businesses into the nation. Only recently did Lambda Financial and Yohannische Bundesbank, two of the world's most reputable banking institutions, open branches in the Royal Kingdom, but their arrival was marked by the opening of over 50,000 new branches between them throughout the nation. Other major financial institutions in the nation include the Lubyak's Crepusculum Investment Bank and domestically-based Príomhbanc Maltróipea.
A maritime nation, sea trade is crucial to its economy, and numerous major port facilities dot the coastline. From the major naval docks at Ardnacrusha to the eastern harbour of Aghabullogue, the Maltropian bays can shelter many thousands of ships of all sizes. Aerfort Idirnáisiúnta Chorcaí Nua (Corcaigh Nua International Airport), Maltropia's largest airport, serves over 150 million passengers annually, a number which only rises as it opens new routes following a recent major overhaul of its entire structure.
In recent years, the country has seen an influx of both steelworks and automotive firms, and now looks set to become one of the world's dominant automobile exporters.
How can I invest?
While you cannot physically invest in the government, as such an attempt would be bribery and hence utterly illegal, a number of major Maltropian firms are currently listed on major stock exchanges. One such firm is the successful Aerfort Idirnáisiúnta Chorcaí Nua (Corcaigh Nua International Airport), which sells shares on the world-renowned Yohannesische Börse AG. It recently opened its extensive facilities to international firms, and has already welcomed branches of several major global companies to its terminals and specially-constructed business park. The establishment of a base in this growing commercial centre could well boost your business' success in Maltropia and Paradoxia. Other good potential sites for establishment include Corcaigh Nua (Maltropia's capital and largest city), Sráid-bhó, and Eochaill in mainland Maltropia, or the capital of the Maltropian Islands, Argensborough. If you wish to establish one or more branches in the Royal Kingdom, please feel free to send a communique to the Ministry of Trade at this website.
As a whole, the Royal Kingdom's population totals some 6.4 billion people, of whom slightly over half live on the mainland. Much of the populace resides in major urban centres, such as Corcaigh Nua (also the nation's capital), with a population of 186 million, Sráid-bhó and Eochaill in mainland Maltropia; and Argensborough and Sturnetown-on-Railte in the Maltropian Islands. The highest population densities are found in the Islands, and in the north and west of the country. In contrast, the southeast consists largely of uninhabited bogs and moorlands, grouped into one large territorial division called An Deasóir. The "Militarised Buffer Region", or MBR, is virtually devoid of civilians, due to its proximity to both New Freedomstan and Ishgar, though the government is investigating the possibility of reopening the region's borders to development.
Topographically, most of the country is mountainous or hilly, the steepest mountains being those straddling the Nefreedian border in the south. However, the region of Eochaill consists of low plains about the River Dúisc, and as such it is considered Maltropia's breadbasket. The MBR consists of a number of plateaux and plains, marked by rivers flowing down from the mountains in the north and east. Flatlands are generally present on the coasts, rising to the high mountains in the nation's interior. The land between the mountains and the sea, however, is quite expansive, and provides ample room for a high-quality motorway and rail network and much urban development. A wide plateau on the border between Tír Luain and Tránaconnachta (two of the western counties) is the location of one of the nation's larger conurbations, that of Terestown-Westfort. These two cities both have major airports within a number of miles from their respective centres, as do most Maltropian cities. Given the high percentage of mountainous land in the nation, government policy has encouraged the construction of numerous airports and several airlines in order to avoid the difficulty of land-based travel.
The Maltropian Islands are a seismically active archipelago northwest of Paradoxia. Formed by volcanic activity on a now ancient plate margin, the Islands still experience small tremors with relative frequency. The Leerock Isles were formed within the last 3,000 years, however, as a result of a hotspot which briefly existed under the plate. This activity has not yet had any major impact on the Islands or their economy, though local building regulations require the use of earthquake-resistant designs. Due to the position of the Islands, they have served a key historical role as the main international base of the Maltropian Royal Navy, which operates out of the city of Farranree. Like all coastal Maltropian cities, Farranree boasts a wide and deep port, sheltered from most storms and capable of accommodating several thousand vessels.
