The Cornellian Empire Recruitment Thread

Postby New Edom » Tue May 06, 2014 3:35 am

The region of The Cornellian Empire is looking for new players to join us. We are a dynamic Modern Tech region devoted to good roleplaying.

What we are looking for:

1. Good writing. You don’t have to have been on NS forever, but being able to provide a good example of writing with correct English grammar is important.

2. Good roleplaying. An understanding of how to write solely one’s own nation’s perspective without writing the responses or action’s of another’s, having a good understanding of the difference between IC and OOC is important.

3. Nations that are Modern Tech, with a real world size population, willing to work on their economy and fit into the region’s history and political life.

4. The Cornellian Empire collapsed in the 1860s. Your nation should have become part of it no later than in the early 18th Century, and left it no earlier than the late 1850s. The Cornellian Empire existed roughly from the fifteenth century AD to the early 20th Century where its remnants finally collapsed into several independent rump states.

5. Work on the region is an ongoing group project. Developing regional history, economics, bilateral relations between countries and questionnaires that help flesh things out are in our regional forum. You would need to participate in this.

6. Populations should be no more than 200 million, but we'd prefer for you to ask first. We prefer on average that populations should be roughly 5-50 million for highly developed nations, and perhaps smaller to larger for less developed nations.

7. Petroleum states are limited in number on purpose. Currently there are two active player petroleum states. We may be open to a few more, please ask first.

8. Please ask about nukes and bio warfare and the like before stating them. We generally discourage this.

9. No alternative nations.

Application

Nation Full Name: The Democratic States of Shalum

Head of State: President Tyler Holland, Imperator of the Sixteen Tribes of Shalum

Head of Government: Dominae Henry Phelps

Economic Style: Free Market Capitalist

Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy legally. Absolute Monarchy/Military Dictatorship in Practice.

Population: 94,000,000

Brief Description of Nation currently: Currently, Shalum is in a good state, economically. Shalum boasts a rather large workforce, most of whom are driven individuals, their drive instilled in their youth and mandatory time in the military. Currently, Shalum's main exports are various types of military equipment produced in the East; and various food types, grown in the West.

Socially, Shalum is a liberal nation, who believes strongly that everyone deserves great amounts of civil rights. In Shalum, same-sex marriages are legal, along with adoptions by same sex couples. Abortions is legal as well, to the discontent of the more conservative parties. A large part of Shalumite culture is military service, which is required by all able bodied men and women for four years.

Military Factbook (Under Revamp at current moment)

Preferred Geography/Climate (Regional Map Here: Shalum is located north the equator, but it has a humid subtropical climate which allows for warm summers and cold winters. Shalum is located on the ocean, the north and western part of the country relying on ports to support the local economy. Aragon, the capital of Shalum, is located on the Northern coast of Shalum; and is known to receive snow every few years, if not more often.

The 'spine' of Shalum, is a long mountain range, which overlooks the plains far below. The mountains in question, named the Merkit mountains, divide the Eastern and Western part of Shalum. The western part of Shalum relies heavily on industry such as factories to support the local economy, while the Eastern part is predominantly agrarian.

The Cornellian Empire once spanned the region, providing law and order. Following a great war over the succession to the Empire that divided it as different factions fought to control the succession, it collapsed into disunity. One-hundred and fifty years later, the old structures are gone, with some nations clinging to old traditions along with their independence while others have become entirely independent. How did your country become part of the Empire, what was the rule of the Empire over your nation like, and how did your nation leave the Empire?

In the late 17th Century, the sixteen tribes of Shalum were united under one clan, the clan of Holland. Prior to unification, Shalum had been plagued by a civil war between the tribes of the East, and the tribes of the West. With the war over, the Shalumite armies disbanded, returning to their homes. The civil war had ravaged the land of Shalum, and it would take years to rebuild. Unfortunately, this weakness made Shalum appear as an easy target for the Cornellian Empire.

The Cornellian/Shalumite war was a short one, lasting only a month. While the Shalumite people were good soldiers, willing to die for their homeland, they were not in position to hold out against a foreign force of Cornellian size. By the mid 17th century, Shalum had completely surrendered to the Cornellians.

The Cornellian rule of Shalum was surprisingly fair, considering the resistance that many Shalumites put up initially. The Cornellians left the Holland family in power, however it was mostly for the masses sake, leaving the Holland's with little power. Both Shalumite conclaves were disbanded, but the titles were kept by the nobleman. What remained of the Shalumite army was assimilated into the Cornellian legions. Along with this, a mandatory conscription of all Shalumite males was put into place. While the Cornellians were strict, it appeared that Shalum was clear of conflict, bound for a golden age.

By the late 19th Century, Shalum had not only recovered from their civil war, but had exponential growth take place. Internally, the local economy had boomed, as farmers sold their good across the empire. On the social level, a deep trust of the Cornellian empire had been formed, causing many Shalumites to go above and beyond the call of duty in the name of the Cornellian empire. By the late 19th century, Shalum had earned dominion status.

However, by the early 20th century, dissent had grown nationwide. Shalumites who had once openly supported the empire, now sneered at it's mentioning. Rumors of Shalumite deserters ran rampant, as Shalumite citizen, in service to the Empire, took their gear and left. Political movements, focused on leaving the Empire sprang up nationwide, some peaceful, some not, as citizens called valiantly to leave the Empire. In the early 30s the catalyizer that would cause Shalum to leave the Empire happened.

In an attempt to quell the revolutions, the Cornellian Empire deployed forces to put down any revolutions. They succeeded at first, until a Cornellian commander ordered the mass execution of the citizens of Fonterra. The citizens, many ex-soldiers, put up a valiant fight, slaying many Cornellians. In the end, the town was decimated, and left barren as an example, however none mentioned the losses that the Cornellians took. In 1945, Andrew Holland officially split Shalum from the weakening Empire, and created a military force to repel any force that the Cornellians. Small skirmishes happened nationwide, but by 1950, Shalum was in the clear, free of Cornellian oppression.

My vote is yes--I've been rping with him and have enjoyed the experience. His characters seem clearly thought out and he writes well. He was willing to change his population and military sizes, and is open minded about historical matters. However I'd like input from others and thoughts from them.

Aye!

It is worth mentioning that the linked map is out of date and many of the nations present in it are no longer in the Region. Your new population seems reasonable, as does your historical summary for Shalum's involvement in the Cornellian Empire.

Seems good to me, nothing out of place and the nation is intriguing. If he's open minded about those things then I'm all for it. Vote is yes.

Only sticking point is history stuff. The Cornellian Empire completely collapsed in 1868, there was no semblance of the Cornellian Empire left by 1945. That means instead Shalum would probably be fighting the Late Roman Empire, its rump state. You would have to ask the player in charge of the Late Roman Empire if he would have dominions in the sense that you mean, as well. The timing of the uprising is good though, because in 1945 the Late Roman Empire would be still recovering from the Great War and preoccupied somewhat with the Ceti Civil War.

Other than that, [STAMP OF APPROVAL]

Well my opinion is that immigration laws are too loose and sentences for criminals aren't harsh enough.

Oh you meant you wanted my opinion on this? Right, that makes more sense.

Ryan pretty much summed up my view but I (even though I'm fairly new myself) all things considered hereby vote [AYE]

I think we're in agreement; some tweaking needed, but welcome!

Application

Nation Full Name : The State of Rinen; alternatively Rin'en, Rien or Ri'en; 凛恩国 (all listed variants considered official, Ri'en variant widely used)

Head of State : Council of Ri'en comprising 17 clan elders, led by Chihara Kotori of the Chihara clan (note - all Ri'en names given with family/surname first, given name last)

Head of Government : As above.

Economic Style : Mixed.

Government Type : Variant of tribal democracy (semi-direct democracy) including elements of kritarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy and absolutism.

Population 17,725,000 (January 2014 census)

Brief Description of Nation currently (at least one paragraph)

In the throes of teething pains. Ri'en was largely isolationist due to its vast distance from large population centres/Cornellian trading ports, and was essentially locked in the Middle Ages until the 1980s, when the first modern Cornellian (any applicable Cornellian nation) ship made its way to the Ri'en port of Shangava, forced to make for land after being embroiled in a severe storm, eventually stumbling upon Ri'en due to a miscommunication between the ship's officers. Exposed to the outside world for only the second time (see below for details on the Cornellian annexation of Ri'en), the natives of Ri'en - having a strong nationalistic streak in them due to their years of isolation - put up fierce resistance against the external influences, which perceived as 'unclean and unholy'.

As a result, Ri'en was slow to modernise/industrialise despite the influx of Cornellian traders - and by extension, their tech - into the country. Almost three decades after Ri'en first came into contact with modern Cornellia (notwithstanding a brief occupation and annexation by the Cornellian Empire in the past, circa 1860), it is still lagging behind the rest of the known world in terms of just about everything, ranging from technology to HDI. Ri'en has large amounts of naturally occurring mineral resources and agricultural products (coal, buckwheat, rare-earth elements, copper, even several gold mines, to name but a few), but its agricultural economy has not evolved to the extent that it is able to make full use of its treasures.

Preferred Geography/Climate (Regional Map Here (note: our map is not set in stone; locations are negotiable with our mapmaker)

Freezing cold. Ri'en has prodigious snowfall, and the climate affects the country to such an extent that the entire Ri'en economy relies on it. Think Hokkaido, only with more severe weather. The winters are long and cold, while the summers are, correspondingly, short and only moderately warm; temperatures do not exceed 15 degrees Celsius even in the summer. Average temperature over a calendar year is around 5.5 degrees Celsius, precipitation peaking in the winter months (November - February). For geography, large snow-covered plains around a central mountain range of moderate height (around 3000m for its highest point). Ri'en spans a large area for a nation consisting of several scattered island chains.

Cornellian navigators/explorers first discovered the cold nation of Ri'en in the 1840s, when a trading ship was shipwrecked off the coast of Nagaryu and its crew subsequently rescued by Ri'en fishermen. The discovery of Ri'en was followed by an initial expedition to its lands, when the Cornellians attempted to impose their rule over Ri'en through the use of military force. Their ships were dashed to pieces on the rocks as a great storm coincided with their arrival in Ri'en waters, but a second expedition sent almost five years later met with calm weather and managed to make land, and subsequently peacefully annexed Ri'en through a serious of deviously-designed treaties created with the intention of tricking the clans of Ri'en into signing away their independence and sovereignty (a la British rule over Malaya). As the Cornellian Empire headed towards collapse, the Cornellian forces in the comparatively peaceful Ri'en were swiftly evacuated to deal with more pressing problems elsewhere, and the Ri'en took the opportunity to rise up against the few thousand Cornellian troops left behind and retake their land from the foreign invaders. The Ri'en rebels succeeded in regaining the entirety of Ri'en from the scattered Cornellian troops and closed shop once again, barring any and all foreign trade in the interests of self-defence.

Note - In the interests of transparency, it should be noted that this nation is an alt of Mizuyuki (Aurora). Should Ri'en be granted entry into the region, you have my word that there will be no bias/prejudice on Ri'en's part due to any Mizuyuki-jin involvement in Cornellia, nor will Ri'en be used to augment Mizuyuki's forces/economy/trade etc or provide a base for Mizuyuki-jin operations of any sort in Cornellia. In short, the two nations will be kept totally apart aside from what constitutes reasonable and logical bilateral interaction. Feel free to ask any questions.

I personally have three issues with this one. The first is relatively minor: the history. It goes against what our region would prefer, which is entry into the Empire no later than the 18th Century. Entry in the 1840s would literally mean no presence of the Empire in a meaningful way.

Second, supposing that they are either up north or way down south, what would prevent other ambitious nations from more ruthlessly conquering the place?

Third: I think you are a very good player, ad I respect your integrity, but we have had issues with puppet nations in the past, simply because the players in question tend to favour their main country to rp with an tend to neglect the one in the region. So I'd be concerned about how much roleplaying you intend to do with this nation. We expect at least one posting a week, and ideally consistent work to help flesh out the region from your nation's point of view in cooperation with the others.

The Free State of Donegal
An tSaorstáit Dhún na nGall

Head of State
President Michael Masterson

Head of Government
Taoiseach Padraig McLaughlin

Economic Style
The country protects its domestic industries via way of trade tariffs. Bilateral trade agreements secure Donegal with export and import partners. Some monopolies exist in the primary and tertiary industries, semi-state bodies operate many services from post and mail, energy generation and supply, food distribution etc.

Government Type
The Free State is governed by a multi-party parliament, which must operate within the rulings of the Constitution. The Senate is the upper house, which oversees the House of Representatives, the lower house. The government has extensive powers to bring in and enforce new laws and bills. Open elections are held every four years for parliament.

Population
As of 2013; 322,275

Brief Description of Nation currently (at least one paragraph)
The Free State of Donegal is a small and isolated nation, fortified in its geographical location by a ring of mountains and high cliffs. Economically, the nation boasts strong industries in the harnessing, refining and sale of wind energy, natural gas and peat moss. Services are also a large industry, with the countries largest and capital town, Letterkenny, acting as the financial hub of the country.

Secondary elements to the economy are the engineering and agricultural industries. Mid-sized engineering firms are scattered all throughout the country - they specialize in high quality batch production metal works. The agricultural industry focuses on livestock, mainly cattle and beef. Wool from Donegali sheep farms is used to fuel the textile industry.

Preferred Geography/Climate (Regional Map Here (note: our map is not set in stone; locations are negotiable with our mapmaker) This is the shape of the country, around 5,000 km squared

Generally I'm interested in this app, but I'd like to know a few things:

1. Why the isolation? I don't mean physically, but why economically/diplomatically?

2. Do you have any roleplaying examples, and what kind of role do you see your country playing in the region?

Also, my apologies to everyone but the map in the OP was wrong--I don't know how it happened but an older url got linked.

The above is the correct map, and the OP has been corrected.

Generally speaking I have the same concerns as Edom, mostly regarding the activity of puppets. I think geographical isolation and harsh climate could offer a potential reason for why Rien was colonized so late by the Empire, especially if located in the far north.
Strategy is the art of creating power.

In Regards to Rinen,

I'm just going to take a shot in the dark here and assume (based on the use of Characters) that this is an Asian themed nation in which case putting it anywhere where it would not be my neighbor strikes me as extremely odd. I mean look at them, be they Chinese, Japanese, or another Far East inspired nation they still make perfect sense to be securely in Hostillia's historic sphere of influence. If they had at some point been either a part of the Divine Empire or alternatively under the sway of the Middle Kingdom, we could have easily claimed them as our own during the days of the Cornellian Empire- after all, Constantinople accepted Hostillian control of Shangmai, Ming Shamo, Rouka-Sol, and Ma Guo, why would Rinen have been significantly different?

If they were part of the Divine Empire rather than the Cornellian Empire their history makes a lot more sense. They would have been a part of the Cornellian Empire by extension of Hostillia's client-state relationship with the Cornellians, but they would not have had to encounter Cornellian soldiers in any significant quantity. Heaven knows Hostillia is technologically backwards with the limited fruits of modernization all found in the Capital province Tian Tang so their technology would likewise make sense, as most of the Divine Empire would have been at comparable tech levels; Rinen could have- much like Rouka-Sol, essentially said "see ya" during the Third Warring States Period and have continued their way of life uninterrupted until the 1980's or so and boom everything stays believable and in line with regional history. As for the climate, it's cool down here- I mean we're as far south as you can really get- I got the impression of an island nation in which case they could be even further south, but if that's not the case, even at our border they could experience some cool weather. Besides, how can we justify putting them far North? French, Germans, and... Asians? That would be a weird map.

As for the puppet issue, I'm mostly meh. From what I've seen with puppets they are either fairly active (like TECT) or they literally get on the map and then never do anything again, which essentially only requires us to remove them from the map, in the event of inactivity we have the power to both contact their main nation, and if we followed the path outlined above the only person who would be greatly effected (from a history-editing perspective) by a sudden withdrawal from the region would be myself since most people could use the same outline for Hostillia for Rinen, as a member of the Han sphere of influence. Besides, you people don't understand- I am dying to have some actual people in this region- there's too many of you damn foreign barbarians!

Same issues as Edom on Rinen. Dea, even Ceti was colonized by the 18th century, and it is an entire ocean away. If Rinen was colonized in the 1840s, the Empire collapses only 20 years later. Furthermore, the Cornellian Empire was supposed to be in serious decline by the 1840s, not expanding. The date of 1840 is, after all, just a number. I would think it could easily be pushed back to the dates in the OP ("Your nation should have become part of it no later than in the early 18th Century, and left it no earlier than the late 1850s.").
In-character name of the nation is "Adiron," because I like the name better.

1 - I want the country to have a distinct mindset, culture and personality. The region that I am modelling this nation after was quite isolated in real life, so I am trying to remain close to that.

2 - I have a few examples that I may be able to put down in a little while. The role I see this country fulfilling is a small economically powerful nation that may have been a past important trading post. Now it produces luxury and precision goods and plays host to a large tourist industry. Its military, while small, is highly professional and perhaps trained and funded by a larger trading partner and ally.

A question; could I have a nation in it, that's a mainly island-based nation, with a population of 106,045 (modern-day) and the population is mainly
Afro-Caribbean, English, Irish and German people?

I will not create a puppet for this application; in the interests of transparency my main nation is playing as this (I did, and do use puppets, but have largely abandoned the practice)

Anyway, here's my application:

Code: Select all
Application

Nation Full Name Astholm; Elmapahari (Elm mountain in Hindi) is the official name of the nation.

Head of State HM Elizabeth

Head of Government Governor [currently holding election]; reports to Astholm Prime Minister, Iain Donaldson

Economic Style Capitalist

Government Type Dependent territory of Astholm; Astholm is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy with devolved legislatures

Population 106,045

Brief Description of Nation currently (at least one paragraph)
This nation is now a territory of Astholm, as of the 1900s. Ethnically, it is fairly diverse, with English, Irish, French, Finnish, Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Nigerian, Jamaican, Afro-Caribbean, Mexican and Danish individuals living within the nation. This is due to multiple waves of immigration since the early 1900s; English, French, Nigerian and Indian were the earliest immigrant groups.

Economically, tourism is the nation's main industry; its other two industries are production of timber and marble, and automobiles also contribute heavily to it, with production here too, for export within the region.

Same-sex marriage has no legal standing within Elmapahari, and foreign same-sex marriages have no legal recognition. LGBT rights are good but same-sex marriage is a legal grey area. Conscription is prohibited, for human rights reason, and the nation is liberal.

Importing automobiles is a fairly easy - but expensive - process, and foreign cars are commonly seen on the streets.

Roads are designed based around those of Astholm; in any case, they are inspired by [url=

Nudism is a criminal offence, except under defined circumstances which are:
1) Medical facilities
2) Sauna

You can and will be fined up to £2,500 for committing a public order offence, per statute law in 1991.

Preferred Geography/Climate (Regional Map Here (note: our map is not set in stone; locations are negotiable with our mapmaker)
The two halves of the land between Morskova

The Cornellian Empire once spanned the region, providing law and order. How did your country become part of the Empire, what was the rule of the Empire over your nation like, and how did your nation leave the Empire?
In the mid-1800s, their economy was not going well, and the government of the day found the Empire was not of benefit to the nation. They left as soon as the empire fell, and tried seeking out foreign collaboration, but it did not go to plan until 1849. As of 1851 they officially became de facto independent, and decided to slowly cultivate a relationship with Astholm as of 1851. The government of the day saw Astholm people as "cultured, refined and setting an example for what a state should be".
Astholmish (British) sailors first visited the island in 1826, when it was under the domain of the Empire. It took a good 25 years before the nation developed a relationship with Astholm. Officially the government of the day saw their culture as interesting from 1845 onwards.

Surprisingly, no revolutions took place over this, the populace were quite accepting of being independent, although there were riots over corn prices, and wheat prices, much like the Corn Law Riots in England. Riots similar to the Swing Riots and Rebecca Riots took place.

In this timespan, the Government was in transition, being individual, but slowly adopting Astholmish practises.

The nation decided to go with the Astholmish(British) in 1851, and found their governmental structure interesting (a government study of the era declared Astholm as "a nation with values we seek to uphold"), and quite happily accepted an offer to become a territory in the mid-1900s, officially declared one as of 1901, then officially becoming a part of Astholm in 1962 - however, it was September 1961 that they officially joined the United Kingdom of Astholm and were not a dependent territory

In the years leading up to 1961, they were autonomous and independent, preferring to maintain links with Astholm, although opinions varied as to whether they should join or not. A poll conducted in April 1961 saw massive support for joining The United Kingdom of Astholm. The population considered being under Astholm rule as good, and bringing their nation's standard of living up to a decent level.

They are now a dependent territory of The United Kingdom of Astholm, and classed as Astholm citizens for the purpose of government and immigration.

I have multiple puppets here; only a select few are used to represent the continent of Astholm; others used represent Westholme, and do not artificially boost my nation's statistics.Previously i used puppets with nation names that did not identify as Astholm (e.g. Australis Australia; now all new puppets use ASTHLM, NORTHLM, SOUTHLM, WESTHLM (HLM denoting The Holmes.
NOTE: Other uses of Astholm here have a different continuity and refer to work created by the user Astholm, not the nation

Okay, let's go point-by-point.

New Edom wrote: -snip-

1840 is just a date I arbitrarily selected for the purposes of Ri'en's app - I would have no problem should a change be needed. It is, after all, just a number, and I'm confident that we can work out any complications over the date of Ri'en's entry into the Cornellian Empire relatively easily. I'm more than willing to make the necessary adjustments.

Second - I thought of going with the isolation and relatively harsh terrain + weather as a reason for Ri'en being left alone after the collapse of the Cornellian Empire, but after reading Hostillia's comments I'm inclined to fall in with their suggestion that Ri'en be established within the Divine Empire. I'm aware that this will require some substantial editing of the app, but again, I'm willing to work with all of you to find a reasonable compromise.

Third point. Ri'en is of course an alt, so to speak; but let me assure you that I would not have applied to join Cornellia if I were simply going to leave Ri'en festering in the region without any appreciable level of activity. In this case, I do not plan to prioritise, nor am I going to favour one nation over the other; should Ri'en be accepted, you have my word that I will endeavour to remain active within the region and to honour my roleplaying commitments to the best of my ability. A one-post-per-week requirement sounds fair enough.

Deadora wrote: -snip-

As mentioned above, I believe that Hostillia's alternative would make more sense over the reasons you and I provided for Ri'en's late colonisation by the Cornellian Empire. In my opinion, both are viable - Hostillia's perhaps more so - but for roleplaying reasons I would prefer to have Ri'en be established within the Divine Empire. Not that I plan to remove the harsh terrain and climate - they're ingrained in Ri'en's national identity to such an extent that I could never justify making any alterations.

Hostillia wrote: -snip-

I can confirm that Ri'en is indeed intended to be a nation based on the amalgamation of several East Asian cultures - the ones I had in mind being Han, Japanese and Korean. Again, as I've said, I'm perfectly willing to fall in line with what you've suggested - it certainly makes more sense than what I currently have on the table. Re - Ri'en geography, what I had in mind is an island chain centred around a large, isolated island either to the far south or far north, but I can work with a location on the Hostillian border.

Hittanryan wrote:I would think it could easily be pushed back to the dates in the OP ("Your nation should have become part of it no later than in the early 18th Century, and left it no earlier than the late 1850s.").

This. Any date ranging from the late 17th century to the late 18th century would be acceptable to me, so there's plenty of wriggle room.

A few questions:
1. Would you accept dispute of Astholm's claim in the past or even politically in the present by Cornellian nations?
2. Are you particular about the dates or do you mind changing some of them?
3. So you would in theory be p,aging this as an independent nation for practical purposes, or is it an extension of Astholm'?
