I. Background

Postby Helladria » Sat Mar 19, 2011 2:41 pm

The Helladrians are an old people whose origins as a civilization date back to a time before their historical records. The current Helladrian records only begin about 200 years after the rise of Emperor Svenge Barnet dår Valkyrjur, who united the Helladrian nation, and overthrew the Svartic tyrants. United into a new federation, the Helladrians began expanding more than 300 years ago. As they expanded, they ran up against two other societies. As they expanded north, they came across the Ashrians, whom they incorporated with ease. The Helladrians wanted to expand, and the Ashrians wanted the protection of the expanding power, so long as they wouldn’t have to give up their way of life. When the Helladrians expanded to the west, they encountered the Bessarian nomads, who quickly proceeded to attack Helladric outposts. Over a period of 100 years, Helladria eventually conquered and incorporated the Bessarian lands. Over the last century and a half, the Bessarians have gradually integrated into Helladric society, but still have nationalistic holdouts.

Once a complete autocracy, Helladria today has a well established tradition of liberal democratic governance, split between a president, a parliament, and a constitutional court. Helladria still has an involved monarchy, well cherished by the citizenry, perhaps because of their philosophy of holding freedom more dear than democracy. Helladria's Parliament is a bicameral legislature with a successful multiparty system, perennially dominated by either the Liberal Party or an opposing coalition. Helladria openly accepts immigration from other nations without the use of a quota system, and a new generation of Bessarians are more integrated into the Helladrian culture than ever before. Helladria is also remarkable for its long established culture of complete gender egalitarianism and gender non-consciousness, despite its skewed sex ratio at birth. The Helladrian language is also completely devoid of gender specific terminology. Emperor Svenge is the monarch of the country, and perhaps the greatest mystery. The Emperor ages and dies the same as any other person, but for hundreds of years is alleged to have been reborn over and again. His clear recollection of previous lives and historical records suggesting actual body jumping lead the Helladrian people to consider the Emperor nearly divine, and a vindication of their mystical religion.

II. History and Culture

Postby Helladria » Sat Mar 19, 2011 2:42 pm

Early Civilization
The people who make up the Helladrian ethnic group today trace their ancestry to the people of the Helladrian coastal plains. The first evidence of civilization starts in the 22th century BCE, in Kalmythene on the Cartonic coast. Within a millennium, civilizations began to arise along the Helladric Gulf coast in Anethis and then the Tolanan coast in Agyri. The earliest bronze tools attributed to Helladrian design appeared on the Cartonic coast around 20000 BCE. Concurrently, additional civilizations began to spring up in Mykacea, Corsyd, Thaemos, Thecimine, and Rhumos.

Bronze Age Empires
By the 17th century BCE, most of Helladria's major contemporary cities had been founded, including Stasigos, Chacilon, Myletos, Erichae, Smarika, and its first major landlocked cities of Saleiyon and Teidromes. Furthermore, the polis of Kalmythene had already founded the Cartonic Empire, named by archaeologists for the adjacent ocean. Based upon record transcripts dutifully recreated after the fall of the Svartic tyrants circa 800 CE, the Cartonic Empire is believed to have encompassed the entire south Helladrian coast, and influenced the independent poleis of Stasigos and especially Teidromes, though it was unable to expand further west than Thecimine because of the Bessarian pastoralists. The Cartonic Empire was well known for being a matriarchal nation, with women occupying most positions of power both in the home and in public, though men experienced a large degree of freedom with rights almost on parity with women. The economy of the Cartonic Empire was characterized by craftsmanship and trade, with contact all along the Helladrian coast and with the peoples of the future Ali-Zebu and Zoltabi nations.

At the turn of the 16th century BCE, a rival empire grew from the polis of Agyri, widely considered the First Tolanan Empire. In addition to its capital, it controlled Mykacea and Smarika, founded the city of Bazene, and influenced Anethis until its defection. The First Tolanan Empire controlled the East coast, and like the Cartonic Empire trade was a major source of technology and revenue. However, all known foreign markets existed on the other side of the Cartonic Empire, and before long, competition became heated between the two Helladrian empires. This came to a head in 1543 BCE when the Cartonic Empire refused passage for Tolanan ships that refused to pay for using their sea lanes. The war was mostly confined to the sea, though the battles of Agyri, Rhumos, and Myletos were exceptions, and in the case of Rhumos, the victorious Tolanan Empire razed the city to the ground, and took command of the ruined port. Originally, the two empires diverged somewhat in their views of the roles of men and women in society, one being somewhat matriarchal, and the other being somewhat patriarchal. During the Tolanan War however, the Thecimenians, who fielded an all-female army, fought at the front lines of the Cartonic forces, and during the battles of Agyri and Rhumos became radicalized against anything Tolanan. When they finally won the battle of Myletos, after losing their earlier battles, they captured and tortured any Tolanan forces that surrendered, which in turn made the peoples of the Tolanan Empire view the Cartonic Empire as being controlled by a mad gynecocracy, and contributed to centuries of cultural animosity between the northeast and southwest Helladrians.

Warfare between rival empires and poleis raged and characterized nearly the whole duration of this era. Several of the more notable empires that rose and fell during this period include the Cartonic Empire, the First and Second Tolanan Empires, the Anethi Empire, and the League of Corsyd, formed in 1071 BCE, and which ushered in a period of relative peace and prosperity by formally limiting the power that any polis or alliance of poleis could hold.

The Iron Age and the League of Corsyd.

VI. Economy

The Helladric Empire is traditionally a continental power with a modest trading heritage, excepting for the Ashrian minority. Even so, liberal economic policies mixed with mild protectionism have produced a formula that allowed the Helladrians to rapidly industrialize. In 2005 Helladria experienced their first trade deficit in 47 years, and the Helladrian Ducat (symbol: Đ ) has almost reached a 1:1 parity between exchange rates and real value. The Helladric Empire has a nation-wide flat marginal income tax rate applicable to the earnings of households above and beyond the poverty line that never exceeds 10%, they institute a 1% corporate income tax rate, and a 10% off-shoring tariff.

VIII. Transnational Issues

Postby Helladria » Wed Jul 06, 2011 3:39 am

Helladria has a mutual defense pact with the Ali-Zebu Union against the Sultanate of Zoltab; Suffers from occasional raids from the northern territory of Svarbald with barbarians using fast attack craft and small arms against coastal towns.
