Your Tollan tomatoes can be patented and protected internationally by the target resolution. So can many other original works. That's significant.

As Sciongrad argued, broad classes of technology, like radio transmission, that everyone would be expected to invent sooner or later, are probably closed off. Very specific inventions, like a new breed of tomato, or a particular flavor of soft drink, can still be protected by foreign patents.

(When I referred to your FTL drive and "let's pretend the claim is real" I meant that with IDIC and all that, someone else might look at what you have and say "we're using the same drive ED is using" and they basically could, because while copying off of another player's roleplay is bad manners, we can't exactly prevent it.

I didn't mean I thought you were lying.)

OOC: No, it isn't. To argue that some nation has discovered every single thing that can ever possibly be discovered is tech wank. The WA has never acknowledged outliers in the past, I have no idea why we should start now.

"We have made several changes to the draft, and intend to submit it soon."
While she had no regrets about throwing the lever to douse her husband's mistress in molten gold, Blanche did feel a pang of conscience for the innocent bystanders whose proximity had caused them to suffer gilt by association.

Neville stares at the draft closely before looking at...whoever is representing Wallenburg this time around. Gerald? Ogenbond? He could never figure out who to address.

Neville: "We'd like to inquire about this clause:
Disappointed that this resolution seeks to impose national law beyond its jurisdiction into other nations, compelling nations to recognize the legal power of contracts made in foreign nations;

"Just to be clear, by 'contracts', are you referring to all the paperwork associated with the patent?"

AGAINST

This repeal proposal contradicts itself. It can't even make up its mind if it supports or opposes patents. It expresses its support for "legislation on the issue of patent rights and intellectual property" but then criticizes the original resolution for violating certain "economic philosophies" that deny property rights (i.e., communism). Afterwards, it claims that Foreign Patent Recognition "needlessly reduces economic freedoms and limits property rights," which is the exact opposite of what it does. We suspect that no replacement legislation is intended.

Does it need to do either? Why can't it remain neutral?
It expresses its support for "legislation on the issue of patent rights and intellectual property" but then criticizes the original resolution for violating certain "economic philosophies" that deny property rights (i.e., communism).

Relevance? That is not self-contradictory.
Afterwards, it claims that Foreign Patent Recognition "needlessly reduces economic freedoms and limits property rights," which is the exact opposite of what it does.

Untrue. The target resolution severely violates the concept of intellectual property, despite its efforts to do otherwise.
We suspect that no replacement legislation is intended.

If I recall correctly, Tinfect had something in the works. I was also considering a replacement myself, although I'm not sure where to go with it.

Crime and Punishment is a resolution that requires member states to limit capital punishment to "the gravest and most serious of offenses." Now, imagine if a nation tried to repeal that resolution by claiming simultaneously that the death penalty should be abolished because it is gravely immoral and also that Crime and Punishment is flawed because it infringes on the "ideological rights" of governments to execute their criminals for any reasons that they see fit. You'd call this proposal illogical, would you not?

Okay, come on now. A Repeal can criticize resolutions for their successes and their failures. If a Resolution intended to ban, say, freedom of speech, and somehow managed to not prohibit it if you were shouting, its all fair game, regardless of whether or not its a consistent viewpoint on behalf of the repeal.

I plan on voting for this repeal/resolution, and I have already told my region that it is up for vote next and urged them to vote FOR it. Hopefully that will help. Just wanted to publicly declare my support for this resolution. I think it should pass easily.
