As the second Gaelic Football World Cup nears ever closer. Our team has been named. The sport isn't the most popular in our nation. But there are players out there. In small-time leagues, there are players. And the best selection has been picked. Or the best quality that could be picked. Anyway. This article isn't really going anywhere. So I may as well get the team that has been picked. Up on the site.

Coaching Staff
Head Coach - Mario Firk - aged 45 -
Assistant Coach - Tezlijan Esner - aged 38 -
Attacking Coach - Tyro Hjik - aged 39 -
Defensive Coach - Firgo Rukalic - aged 42 -

Roster
(Number - Position - Name - Age - Height -)
#1 - Goalkeeper - Rikka Tyruk - aged 22 - 6ft 3ins -
#2 - Right Corner Back - Yurij Kalevic - aged 25 - 5ft 11ins -
#3 - Full Back - Mario Murijk - aged 28 - 6ft 4ins -
#4 - Left Corner Back - Robert Nokac - aged 19 - 6ft 2ins -
#5 - Right Half Back - Karim Agnuao - aged 28 - 5ft 10ins -
#6 - Centre Half Back - Harij Vuckic - aged 23 - 6ft 10ins -
#7 - Left Half Back - Garzan Kuk - aged 18 - 5ft 4ins -
#8 - Midfielder - Dario Semik - aged 20 - 5ft 7ins -
#9 - Midfielder - Sami Jusik - aged 19 - 5ft 9ins -
#10 - Right Half Forward - Jasno Anvi - aged 18 - 6ft 1in -
#11 - Centre Half Forward - Mirko Marescci - aged 22 - 6ft 11ins -
#12 - Left Half Forward - Erik Kaslim - aged 25 - 6ft 3ins -
#13 - Right Corner Forward - Najo Fleesi - aged 27 - 6ft 10ins -
#14 - Full Forward - Vinkenza Garaj - aged 17 - 5ft 8ins -
#15 - Left Corner Forward - Harij Jasil - aged 22 - 6ft 3ins -

Substitutes
#16 - Substitute - Tomas Rozicki - aged 20 - 6ft 4ins -
#17 - Substitute - Darij Masilevic - aged 27 - 6ft 3ins -
#18 - Substitute - Viktor Krumzik - aged 26 - 6ft 3ins -
#19 - Substitute - Garij Gozn - aged 18 - 5ft 9ins -
#20 - Substitute - Fernando Forz - aged 19 - 5ft 10ins -

There is some controversy among the Mytanar GAA Community, relating to the young side that has been picked by coach, Mario Firk. Especially our Full Forward, Vinkenza Garaj, who at the age of 17. Is playing in one of the most important positions on the pitch. Also, the relative lack of height in our side could be a problem. With speed seemingly taking importance over height and strength. Another concern that has been raised, is the one about substitutes not being put in specific positions. But players that are very versatile, this could be a problem if one of the positions isn't covered properly, and players are playing out of position, or playing for too long - and losing stamina.

Our group, looks like a tough one, with The Babbage Islands, Saugeais and Unitopolis all drawn with us. All of these teams will pose a hard challenge for us, but a win in the first game versus, Unitopolis. Could push us into a good position. All of our group games will be played at the Rebellion Ground in Corcaigh, which has a capacity of 32,000. If we win our group, we will play the group D runners-up (if we are runners-up in our group, we will play the Group D winners). Which is one of Ganjapolis, Swartaz, Al-Mumtaz or Silver Beach. And we will play at either, The Rebellion Ground (if we win the group..so we should be familiar with the ground by then - if we win the group), or the Tailteann Grounds with a capacity of 28,000.

We could do well in this tournament, it is one we could win. Possibly. With a bit of luck, and the performance of their lives (by the players)...we could go all the way to the James Connolly Stadium, in Beningrad, with 150,000 fans watching us.

The Gaelic Football World Cup is truly a special event. For a few precious weeks, inter-club rivalries are forgotten and players work together for the good of the team. Even the bitter rivalry between Loch Garman and Dubh Linn players is forgotten, as all players put on the green and black stripes of the Unitopolis Gaelic Football team. Unitopolis finished third in the first Gaelic Football World Cup, but we'll have to work especially hard if we want to achieve that kind of success this time around. We're in a tough group, with Mytannion, Saugeais, The Babbage Islands but at least we avoided the current champions Cosumar. The current president of the International Gaelic Football Association, Seamus Murtagh, will be in Sorthern Northland for the duration of the competition and he has complimented the facilities of the country. "Everything is brilliant, it really is." He told us earlier, "Obviously I've only been in my hotel and to the shopping centre, but based on that everything is fantastic." When asked about the claims that stadiums were still under construction, he merely laughed and replied cryptically, "People are always convinced that what happens isn't due to happen but that's why people aren't always right, because you never know if what happened, happened on time and sometimes you don't know if it ever happened at all." Whatever the above statement actually means is unknown but he seems to be refuting the claims. Anyway, the Daily Crest will be right here in Sorthern Northland for the whole tournament.

Beningrad Morning Star

Sorthern Northland ready for World Cup organisers insist

Sorthern Northland's preparations to host the second Gaelic Football World Cup have been beset by number of problems. Rumours have recently been circulating questioning the safety of a number of venues to be used during the competitions whilst organisers have been forced to admit that a number of access routes including railways, walkways and roads leading to the stadiums have had to undergo a series of emergency repairs to be ready for use.

With kick-off fast approaching the man charged with leading the organising committee for the event, Stiofán Ó Fionnachta, dismissed rumours of any further problems and insisted that the nation was fully ready to host the event.

“It's fine. The stadiums are ready, all other necessary facilities are ready, we're ready” Ó Fuinnachta insisted, adding, “There's always a bit of a panic in the run up to any events, and whilst there were a few last minute problems they've all been solved and we can now look to a very exciting tournament. Now it is time for talk to be of officialdom and to be about and from the players.”

Amongst those players is Sorthern Northland forward Ciarán Ó Branagáin who is set to lead the Sorthern squad on home soil as captain.

Speaking during a pre-tournament press conference Ó Branagáin claimed to be looking forward to the tournaments opening game against An Blascaod Mór, commenting “I'm sure I speak for the whole squad when I say we can't wait. For me playing in such an event and on home soil, it's going to be the most memorable moment of my career I think, hopefully we can use it to our advantage and build upon our Cotswold Trophy win in the compromise rules and create something special.”

Ó Branagáin also said he wasn't worried about reports of a disused chalk mine under the car park of one of the venues collapsing saying “The organisers and the SGGA [Sorthern Gaelic Games Association] have told me it's nothing to worry about and I don't think they'd try and hide something like that”.

Unitopolis ot their World Cup campaign off to a good start yesterday with a hard-earned draw against Mytannion. Despite some concerns about his fitness, 25 year old Paul Phelan started at right forward after he missed training yesterday with a calf strain. There was no injury worries for Josh Kirwan's Mytannion counterpart Mario Firk, who took a gamble by starting 17 year old Vinkenza Garaj at full-forward. Firk came under pressure from the Mytannion media for selecting the teenager but his gamble looked to have paid off as the 17 year old coolly lobbed the ball over the bar for the match's first point. Unitopolis took just three minutes to respond in kind, with Alain De Burca smashing the ball over from the tightest of angles. Once both teams had gotten their first point on the board the match really opened. Unitopolis were playing fluent, free-flowing football which, while beautiful to watch, left them vulnerable at the back. It was a vulnerability that Mytannion exploited, scoring a goal through Najo Fleesi, who managed to break through the Unitopolitan defence to smash home a goal. When Garaj scored another point the gap was extended to 4 points. Unitopolis went some way to tightening that gap after 16 minutes as veteran forward Diarmuid Flynn picked up the ball on the 45-metre line before exchanging passes with his Youghal City team-mate Conal Keanen before hammering home a goal. Unitopolis equalised on the 20 minute mark and then went one point ahead, both scores courtesy of Paul Phelan.

Phelan was almost mocking the critics who doubted his fitness and he played a key part in Unitopolis' second goal. A long pass by Thomas Olde found Phelan lurking just outside the line and his quick handpass to Jason O'Connell allowed the Ballymurray forward to shoot quickly and bury the ball in the Mytannion net. With the score 2-3 to 1-2 Unitopolis looked to be in cruise control, however sloppy defending allowed Sami Jusik and massive (6' 11'') Mirko Marescci to put two points each over the bar and bring the scores level for half-time. Unitopolis came out fihtin in the second half and who else but Conal Keanen scored the very first point with a risky shot from nearly 50 yards out. However after ten minutes of pressure all they had to show for it was one point from Harry Cahill.

Karl Basville and Michael Brennan were working together superbly to prevent the Mytannion forwards getting sight of goal, although that didn't stop them from taking a few pot-shots from distance, most notably a swerving 45 yard effort from Jasno Anvi. The score was 2-5 to 1-10 as we entered the final fifteen minutes, with both teams desperate for a win and both teams looking capable of it. Suddenly, in the 57th minute, a clearance from Karl Basville found Conal Keanen, who skilfully turned defender Robert Nokac before slottin the ball into the corner of the net to make it 3-5 to 1-10 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Mytannion grabbed two points back, from 25 year old Erik Kaslim and Najo Fleesi, but Unitopolis still looked in control. They looked even more in control two minutes later, when Jason O'Connell scored his twentieth international goal to make it 4-5 to 1-12 with seven minutes to play. Then, without warning, it all fell apart for Josh Kirwan's side. Najo Fleesi popped up to score another point. Jason Anvi scored another long-distance point to even things up, and finally Vinkenza Garaj smashed the ball over from ten yards out to put Mytannion in front. On the sidelines, Josh Kirwan was furious and his anger must have spurred the players on, as the ever-reliable Paul Phelan scored a point in the last-minute to earn Unitopolis a point. Exciting stuff from Unitopolis, but they'll need to tighten the defence up if they want to progress much further in this tournament.

Unitopolis 4-6 (18) - 1-15 (18) Mytannion

6 points - Jason O'Connell (2-0), Najo Fleesi (1-3)
4 points - Vinkenza Garaj (0-4)
3 points - Diarmuid Flynn (1-0), Conal Keanen (1-0), Paul Phelan (0-3), Sami Jusik (0-3)
2 points - Jasno Anvi (0-2), Mirko Marescci (0-2)
1 point - Alain De Burca (0-1), Harry Cahill (0-1), Erik Kaslim (0-1)

Saugeais scores more over the top, wins game

In a truly heated battle, Saugeais defeated The Babbage Islands by a score of 18-13. But the interesting thing is this: none of points on either side were into the net. All were placed over the top. Manager Steven Jameson said after the match, "We tried for shots on goal, but their keeper was just to good, so at half time I told them to just keep scoring over the top and see if we'll win. Fortunately, we did." Looks like Saugeais will be attempt the old "point a minute" style that was common in old time American football matches.

Among the goal scorers in the match were:
Josh Thompson (4: 11', 13', 34', 45')
Andy Perry (4: 22', 27', 31', 59')
Bruce McDaniels (3: 3', 7', 18')
Trent Mickelson (3: 20', 25', 40')
Padraig O'Toole (2: 43', 50')
Robert Patton (2: 37', 55')

Unitopolis got their first win of the Gaelic Football World Cup yesterday with a 1-13 to 1-11 victory over The Babbage Islands at Rebellion Stadium in Corcaigh, the second largest city in Sorthern Northland. Veteran left-back Harry Cahill broke his ankle in training on Monday and he'll miss the rest of the tournament. Starting in his place is 21 year old Cian O'Sullivan, who is the only member of the squad to ply his trade outside of Unitopolis (for Hanox's Cardinal Beattie GFC). After a good performance against Mytannion saw Unitopolis score four times, manager Josh Kirwan had emphasised the need to build up a healthy points lead before going for goals. "Obviously we want goals," he told UTN Sports, "but it's important that we remember it's only worth three points. We saw yesterday in Saugeais vs. The Babbage Islands that teams don't necessarily need goals to win games, they just need skill."

Luckily for him, skill is one thing that Kirwan's squad has in abundance. World class players such as Conal Keanen and Thomas Olde, aswell as Athletic Stanza goalkeeper Stephen Brixton make Unitopolis one of the favourites to go all the way this year. Bookmakers all over the country have the team at good odds to win the tournament and based on yesterdays performance that's a distinct possibility. Unitopolis started off brilliantly when they went 3 points up inside the first five minutes, courtesy of Jon Cook, Alain De Burca and Conal Keanen. Keanen struck again in the tenth minute, when Unitopolis went 4 points up. The mood was dampened when the Babbage Islands grabbed a goal back to narrow the gap to one point. By half-time, the score was 0-7 to 1-5, with Unitopolis trailing by a point. Within ten minutes of the restart the game had come to life, with a goal from Diarmuid Flynn, two points by Paul Phelan and a red card for midfielder Ronald McConnell for a trip on a Babbage Islands forward. The card was McConnell's first ever international card and he will be suspended for the next two games, if Unitopolis even progress that far. The Babbage Islands exploited their extra man and with ten minutes remaining Unitopolis were still trailing 1-9 to 1-11.

The final ten minutes were basically a masterclass by Conal Keanen in how to play the beautiful game. With his back to goal, 40 yards out, Keanen booted the ball over his own head for a point. Two minutes later he equalised with a little dink over the bar. Satisfied with his own performance, he selflessly handpassed it to Jason O'Connell to put over the bar and finally, with forty seconds remaining, he escaped his marker and handpassed to Paul Phelan, who smashed the ball over from 20 yards out. Unitopolis will be desperate for a win next week against Saugeauis to hopefully top the group.

Unitopolis 1-13 (16) - 1-11 (14) The Babbage Islands
4 points - Conal Keanen (0-4)
3 points - Diarmuid Flynn (1-0), Paul Phelan (0-3)
2 points - Alain De Burca (0-2), Jon Cook (0-2)
1 point - Gary Maguire (0-1), Jason McConnell (0-1)

Somehow, despite the fact that most of the country has never even heard of the sport, Cotdelapoms' Gaelic Football team are 3-0 at the World Cup of it after a resounding victory over the very Gaelic sounding An Blascaod Mór, a country we had no clue existed prior to this tournament. The Gaelic Apples are made up entirely of amateurs and have never played together, unlike our inspirational Candy Apple crosse team, many of whom had at least played organised crosse before.

There were no goals yesterday as Unitopolis defeated The Babbage Islands 0-13 to 0-1. Conal Keanen scored three times, as did Jason O'Connell and Paul Phelan to give Unitopolis the victory and earn us a place in the quarter-finals against Group D winners Ganjapolis. Should Unitopolis win this, they'll face either unbeaten Windows Vista Business or the hosts Sorthern Northland in the semi-final in our toughest match yet. But we're not there yet, and manager Josh Kirwan will have to inspire Conal and the rest of the team to play like they've never played before.

Unitopolis 0-13 (13) - 0-1 (1) Babbage Islands
3 points: Conal Keanen (0-3), Paul Phelan (0-3), Jason O'Connell (0-3)
2 points: Diarmuid Flynn (0-2)
1 point: Gary Maguire (0-1), Cian O'Sullivan (0-1)
