Is there any interest in starting an NS Sports Discord chat? I could start one if there is.

We already have an IRC chat. I don't see the point of having two.

It looks like this has now been sorted out.

But I'll briefly repeat here my opinion from the relevant Moderation thread that I see no reason why street racing can't be in Sports.

Just curious, is there any NS soccer/futbol tournament featuring teams of older/retired players competing? (I'm talking 50+ years of age; not including immortal or longer-living entities)

There used to be. A tournament called the Senior's Cup, that had two editions some 4/5 years ago. Never took off, given that it was sort of amateurly run by newbies with little idea of what they were doing (one of them being me :p ).

I have been thinking a little about a revival/renewal of sorts recently, never really considered taking it beyond that.

How is DIscord any different than Esper? I don't see the need for two chats, but if there are differences I'm not aware of, it might be nice.

Discord is basically the new, better version of IRC. Several big regions use it these days, including TNP, KoA, and Europeia. You can PM people a lot easier than you can on IRC, logs of previous chat stick around (unlike IRC), and it'll notify you when someone tags your name, including when you're offline. Pretty much, it's just smoother.

EDIT: Oh, and Discord has voice chat, too, which is another big thing.

Yeah, it's pretty much obsoleted every other voice and IM client at once. Meanwhile, I occasionally log onto my Skype account and all I get is three guys I barely remember hacked and sending me viruses...

I'd be in favour of the move.

Yeah, I can see the benefits of switching the chat over to an IM client, though I'd ideally like to be able to turn off the voice chat.

IRCCloud can do all of those things on IRC, but it does many of them badly (for example, if you frequently PM somebody who regularly changes their nick, it can split those logs into several separate logs, making it much harder to find what somebody said).

EDIT: Looks like you are, indeed, able to disable voice in Discord. You can now add me on Discord by adding SNT-FFR#7504 and I've also created a server.

It looks like there are benefits to using discord that you don't get on esper, so I agree. While I still don't see the need for two identical chats, that doesn't seem to be the case here.

It looks like another benefit of Discord is that the server admin can easily create new channels for various topics and people can easily switch between them (or ignore ones they aren't interested in). Seems like a good way of allowing people to pick and choose what types of discussions they want to see and/or participate in. Its also possible on Discord to receive notifications for every message in a channel or even every message on the server.

A Discord server seems to be basically the equivalent of an IRC channel, btw.

Should we maybe have different channels, e.g. general discussion, WCC events, World Bowl, WCoH, IBC, WBC, domestic newswires, etc.?

Don't think you'd need a lot of different channels.
Maybe one for regular stuff and another for the usual "let's play Cards Against Humanity" shenanigans.

EDIT: Speaking of which, always wished to make a little server. :p

Agreed.

Yeah, having a "spam" channel would be good, I think.

First time posting in NS Sports, but after some deliberation, I'd like to get into it. I'm just wondering if there's a sports roleplay that is more precise to new players, I don't comprehend much regarding this type of roleplay.

The one tournament that is specifically for new players (and new puppets of existing players) is the Baptism of Fire, which is held before every World Cup for nations that are entering the World Cup for the first time. In terms of events where you'll be able to have immediate success even as a newbie, others that come to mind are the youth tournaments (which don't use ranks) and the Olympics/other multisport events (which use skill modifiers as rankings, but with rules that place each entrant on an equal playing field).

However, if you're interested in a particular sport, you're probably best off just jumping straight into that sport's major tournament since it takes time to build up a ranking and become a serious threat to win it (how long depends upon the tournament). You can get an idea of how things work by reading the current World Cup threads (that's the RP thread, but the roster thread and results thread are linked from there) or the current Cup of Harmony thread (the CoH, like most events here, uses a single thread for RPs, rosters and results called an Everything Thread) or you could just enter an event and try to imitate what everybody else is doing. The overwhelming majority of events here run very similarly, so most of the knowledge of how sports RP works that you pick up from participating in one event will also apply to other events.

Hello, I have several questions.
I was planning on having my nation hosting a dystopian "you die in the game, you die in real life" e sports tournament. What scorinator should be used? Also, how many rounds, competitors and teams should there be in an e sports tournament?

Entirely up to you, really. There are several options. IMO it's best to come up with an idea of what you want to do first, and then see how it can be done.

You could look at a real life tournament and model the format (entrants, teams etc) on that... then decide what kind of scoring system you want.
Do you want best of x rounds, winner of each round is the first to y points? If so, something like tennis or badminton might work.

Do you want best of x rounds, winner of each round is the first to y points? If so, something like tennis or badminton might work.

Should I use the xkoranite scorinator? Also how does it work?

You could probably find an option in xkoranate that would produce whatever kind of scoring system you want (with the exception of the Must-10 scoring system used in MMA and professional boxing). You can also modify the XML files for the various sports to increase/decrease scoring, increase/decrease randomness or even create scorinators for entirely new sports, but that's not something I'd recommend attempting until you're familiar with how xkoranate works.

As for using xkoranate, the main difficulty involves the interface which doesn't look like the Windows interfaces everybody's used to. The buttons at the top are (from left to right) New File, Open, Save, Save As and Table Generator. The Table Generator is mainly useful when you're doing a group stage that isn't round robin (or a tournament using Casaran or another variant of Swiss-system). To get started, just click the plus in the lower left (and ignore the section called "bonuses" which is for the Olympics) and select a sport. Then, enter your athletes/teams as "participant" (the "team" field can be left blank or used to hold trigrams or nation names). The "skill" field is the ranking+RP bonus field. The "style" field (which is only used for a few sports) is for style modifiers (which use the standard -5 to 5 scale, with negative meaning defense-oriented and positive meaning offense-oriented). The rest, I believe, is fairly self-explanatory (though keep in mind that the "table sort rules" A.K.A. tiebreakers use the soccer terminology for all sports, so in gridiron football "goals for" is actually "points scored" and in baseball "goals for" is actually "runs scored"). If you're not sure what a button does, just place your mouse over it and xkoranate will display a tooltip explaining what it does.
