What's the best way to rate teams from different divisions for a cup competition in xkoranate? All my divisions are ranked from 0.000 to 1.000 yet when two teams meet from different divisions I would like the team in the higher division to be rated higher. I'm not sure if bonuses for each division would be enough to ensure a team rated 0.100 is rated slightly higher than a team in the division below rated 0.900

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think bonuses for each division would work if you set the percentage right. Might take some tweaking to figure out the best number.
Otherwise, you could do what I do and apply a multiplier to the rank based on division (but then your teams won't necessarily be rated 0.000 to 1.000)

I'd suggest experimenting until you get the kind of result you want, really.

What sort of multiplier do you add? I was thinking of making the top division 3.xxx, the next division 2.xxx, following division 1.xxx for example, but I worry the gulf between the top and bottom divisions will be too great (in a 5-tier pyramid at least).

In a 5-tier system, you'd be looking at a 0-5 scale if you did that, so each division's point would be equivalent to 0.2 points on a 0-1 scale. That's not actually that bad. If you take a look at the current rankings for the World Cup, I'm ranked 18th and my ranking is roughly equivalent to 0.5 on a 0-1 scale. The #40 ranking is currently roughly equivalent to a .34 on a 0-1 scale and there are nearly 400 teams currently in the rankings. The gap between #1 and #3 would be good enough for the #49 ranking. A 5th division team's ranking being equivalent to somewhere between 0 and 0.2 on the 0-1 scale while a 1st division team's ranking is somewhere between 0.8-1 on the same scale seems about right.

Again, it depends what you're after.
I personally use 7/5/2.5/1.25/1, but I experimented and tweaked those numbers over a few seasons until I got the balance I wanted (which is deliberately skewed toward the top two divisions).

If you're concerned about there being a massive gulf... your system shouldn't really have that problem, as Saintland points out. And it's probably a lot easier to manage than something like mine. Heh.

Personally, as far as cup competitions go, I rank all teams in the same league the same to simulate Cup Magic (TM). So up until this season, there's been four tiers of the Nepharim Premiership; with max rank 100, the teams in those leagues have been given 100/60/30/0, which has worked well for me - you still get a fair amount of heroic underdogs. Not to mention the time it saves compared to updating every club's rankings twice.

I ended up building my own bonus system in excel and then using those numbers in the skill section of xkoronate. I've been considering making it available for others to use as well, if any one is interested.

The build is designed to generate skills based on past performance up to six seasons, and can also handle RP bonuses for cups, etc. If anyone is interested, tg me, and I'll see what I can do about getting it to you.

I do this. Based it on UEFA coefficients at first, but changed it later to better match my intentions.
It's kind of convoluted the way I do it though, so I was working on a way to simplify and automate the process as much as possible before offering it out, haha.

Thank you for the input everyone. I think I've figured out my own system that means teams have a league and cup rating but it will require a bit more tinkering. If the gulf is too great from best to worst in a division then scores are a bit skewed to thrashings, yet if I even it up the table is a bit too close for "realism" (ie. teams getting relegated with 60+ points etc. in a 46 game season)

On xkoranate the "NSFS 3" method of scoring baseball also allows you to include innings which the NSFS 3 java program doesn't do. Am I missing something here or is that by design? As I like the way of running cup competitions in NSFS 3 but prefer the innings scores of xkoranate.

NSFS3 does produce inning-by-inning scores internally; it just doesn’t have a way to display them. xkoranate does.

Not really a question, more of a bug that might be too hard to fix but should be mentioned anyway. In the "NSFS 3" baseball in xkoranate games that go into extra innings don't ever have walk-off finishes. For example look at the following game:

Nyhamn Royals                    0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0  0  1
Conneaut Centurions 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 11 12


Conneaut should have won the game as soon as the first run crossed the plate in the 20th inning (unless it was a 2, 3 or 4-run home run of course). But piling on 10 more runs seems a bit over the top. Is there a way I can change the code in the xml file to limit teams to a maximum of 4 runs in the bottom of a frame during extra innings?

This is a known bug. But I don't get your fix--a team can score more than four runs in the bottom of a frame in extra innings if the away team scored four or more runs in the top of the inning.

You can always just manually edit the scoreline afterward to make it realistic. And if you're worried about it throwing off run differential tiebreakers... why are you using run differential as a baseball tiebreaker? Play a playoff game like a man!

- Somebody knows how to backup xkoranate files and if case I erase the files in the computer, how can I use the backup?

- Can you pass the NSFS 3.0.1 files to Xkoranate and use it there?

I've never tried it, but obstensibly any excel scorinator would work, either through an app that allows you to use excel spreadsheets, or via Google Drive. It's not xkoranate, but it'll get the job done.

How do people go about teams improving/declining season to season?

For example, in a division of 20 teams, I split the teams at the end of the season into three "mini" divisions of 4, 8 and 8 and then randomize the teams within each mini division for the following year. This allows teams to maintain their strength but randomize their skill enough to keep things interesting and prevent the same results every year. It also allows teams to move up and down mini divisions over time to create the history of teams rising and falling throughout the division/league system.

What does everyone else do?
