Games of the V Olympiad - signup/OOC thread

Important glorious shining sun of benificence announcements section

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE "WE SIGN UP" or "ROSTER TO COME" type posts which are devoid of any actual sign-up. They serve no purpose other than to take up space and will do you no good anyway. You also should not edit in your sign-up into an existing post as chances are I will miss it.

0712 UTC, 12 July
Signups are now even more closed than they were before. The (IC) opening ceremony will take place on 12 July, and Day 1 of scorination will be 13 July. Please use this thread for OOC now. Thank you for your cooperation. Oh yes, and I was able to accommodate the late entries too, so it's your lucky day fellas.

0242 UTC, 10 July
As you will know if you're keeping up with this thread, I'm behind on the entries and 12 or 13 July is more likely as the start date. This hasn't been helped by people not adhering to the specified format given in the example below, by the way - one egregious example which I'm still working on now departed so far from the format that it has almost doubled the time I needed to process it. Also, there have been several entries for an event called "Women's 25m rapid fire pistol" which isn't being held. In real life this is part of the "Women's 25m pistol" event, and that's how it will be for these Olympics. Those entries have been disregarded in all cases.

2354 UTC, 2 July
Please see this post regarding demonstration sports. We'll have rugby sevens and maybe netball.

0224 UTC, 26 June
Alright now, the opening ceremonies will be, tentatively, held on 9 July with day 1 of scorination being 10 July. I will open the RP thread next week and the schedule will be posted there. This is UNCONFIRMED; in the event that you lot decide to flood me with 500-entry signups on the 5th, it will have to be delayed ;)

0519 UTC, 7 June
I have specifically said to put skill modifiers in round brackets for a reason - it allows me to simplify the process of processing signups by using the find and replace tool. Please use the bloody things. I'm sorry if my tone is rather annoyed, but I have specifically stated this and several other things in the instructions - bolded, even - and was clearly a fool to believe everyone would read them; even if the text was too dense for you, there's a very clear example signup provided as well.

Also, it's just a minor fun little thing, but if your nation has a different name in French (for instance, Germany is Allemagne in French), please do make a note to that effect. ICly, the march-in will be done by alphabetical order of teams' French names, with Kelssek, as host nation, coming last.

0139 UTC, 6 June
You must name relay teams, doubles teams, etc. It's only the team sports (like football, water polo, field hockey, handball, etc.) that don't require all competitors to be named. If you've got a badminton doubles entry or a 4x100m relay where you've put in "roster to come" or the like, it has been and will be disregarded.
_____

Welcome to the signup thread for the Games of the V Olympiad. We in Outineau are glad you could make it, même des impérialiste anglais barbares. If you're new to sports roleplaying, this should be of some help.

How to sign up
Firstly, a definition that will help with one potential source of confusion: you're going to hear me refer to "entries". Each entry is an athlete or a team which is competing in an event. One runner competing in the 100m, 200m and 400m counts as three entries. A squad of 14 water polo players is one entry. 4 people in a relay team is one entry. The actual number of athletes doesn't matter for the purposes of signing up, it's entries we're dealing with.

Copy and paste the events list below. The numbers appearing next to each event is the maximum number of competitors each national Olympic committee may enter in the event. Put in the names of your athletes and a skill modifier for them within the range of 0 to 1, where 0 is the least skill and 1 the most. Please do not use modifiers with more than 2 decimal places. Entries without a skill modifier will be given 0.5 by default. You must have a name for every entry, except for team sports like water polo or football where it says (1 team) or the like; for those you do not need to name everyone on your team, but posting a team roster in the roster thread will help you and others RP. You do need to name competitors for doubles, relay events, or anything where you see something like [x teams of y]. You may specify a three-letter nation code in your signup; one will be chosen for you if you don't. Omit any events for which you are not entering athletes. Please make sure you disable smilies when you post! If you type in (0.8) with smilies on, I see a guy with sunglasses instead.

If you change anything after posting your sign-up, please make a new post for the changes. Try to keep this to a minimum if you must do it at all.

Example
Please try to keep to this format as much as possible, since it makes the tedious process of scorinator input easier. Please put the skill modifier in round brackets (they look like the ones around these words and are usually shift-9 and shift-0 respectively) as it will make things easier for me. This example has 9 entries.

Limits
The average of all skill modifiers in your delegation must not be more than 0.5. That is, if you have 100 entries, you have 50 points to distribute over your entire delegation. Going over the average will prompt reductions to your skill modifiers, which might lead to some mystery and suspense as to who will underperform... but it also annoys me and that is not advisable.

You may have a maximum of 500 entries in your delegation. Entries in demonstration events do not count against the limits or the average skill modifiers.

Roster thread
Rosters for teams in team events should not be included in your signup; instead get all those rosters together and post them in the rosters thread.

Deadline
The deadline for signups or modifications to them is 23:00 UTC on Monday, 5 July 2010. That's Monday afternoon/evening in the Americas, Monday night in Europe/Africa, and Tuesday morning in East Asia and Oceania (which has always been at war with Eurasia)*. If you think it's going to be a factor, look up your timezone to see exactly what time it'll be for you. Do not expect any signups or modifications to be accepted after the deadline. I haven't decided exactly when we'll start yet, but it should either be later in that same week or the week after. Should I need to push back the start of the Games the deadline will be extended; stay tuned for updates.

Demonstration events
First off, while acknowledging that people like to see certain sports included in the Olympics, I'd like to keep them to a minimum. That said, demonstration sports proposed may be held at my discretion provided sufficient information about the sport (format, etc.) to allow me to scorinate it is provided. Sports which don't already have competitions for them on NS Sports are preferred.

* George Orwell reference. Don't mind me.

From what I can tell, it was intentional. It wasn't included in the base list and Kelssek didn't have it in his list. IIRC, the logic was that association football has a popular championship (understatement), so it didn't need inclusion in the Olympics.

Field hockey seems to have been omitted as well.

I’m also confused by the selection of flatwater canoeing events—using 200 m races for men and 500 m races for women doesn’t seem to make sense. If the intent was to use the same events as Beijing/Aeropag, the 200 m events should be 500 m.

It is included in the mandatory events list. Perhaps confusion resulted from these sports being listed as “football” and “hockey” rather than “association football” and “field hockey”?

Kelssek, I'd suggest adding something along the lines of "signing up without posting your entrants is pointless and will be ignored" owtte disclaimer to your OP.

I also think the extremely low level of RPing that The Babbage Islands's well hosted minor sports events have seen should be taken as a consideration against having many demonstration events: there doesn't seem to be the interest.

Football and (field) hockey were always meant to be included and their omission was an error, as was the use of 200m rather than 500m in the canoeing: I think I'd gotten the extended and mandatory events mixed up at that point.

Avoiding having to correct these sort of things when things go 'live' was sort of the point of me putting the events list up early, but oh well.

Demonstration events proposed by Comhairle Oilimpeach na Bhlascaoid on behalf of the Olympic Committee of Sorthern Northland

Sport: Gaelic Football
Events: Men's, Women's (both as team events)
Results: Example set of results. The first number shows the number of goals (getting the ball in the net, below the bar and between the posts of the goal frame) scored by a team, whilst the second shows the number of points (getting the ball between the posts but above the bar of the goal frame) scored, so for example in the Antrim - Kerry game where the score was 1-10 2-12 Antrim scored one goal and ten points and Kerry two goals and twelve points. One goal is equal in value to five points so a team scoring 1-5 would beat a team scoring 0-9 and a team scoring 0-11 would beat a team scoring 2-0.
Format: Either a round robin group phase followed by a knock-out format (similar to what would be used in Association Football), or a knock-out format from the start. Or if there's too small a number to make any knock-out phase not worthwhile a single round robin group phase.
Entrants per nation: One team per event per nation. Teams consist of fifteen players (a goalkeeper, two corner backs, a full back, two wing backs,a centre back, two mid fielders, two wing forwards, a centre forward, two corner forwards and a full forward) plus up to fifteen substitutes, of which five may be used.

Sport: Cesta punta
Events: Men's team, Women's team
Results: Example sets of results. The winner of a match is the first team to 35 points, losing teams average score is roughly 25 points with a range of between 15 and 33.
Format: Single elimination knockout.
Entrants per nation: Two team in each event. A team is made up of two persons, a frontcourter and a backcourter.

The Babbage Islands endorse the nomination of Gaelic football as a demonstration sport, and recommend the inclusion of korfball in the interest of promoting gender equality. Both sports have been Olympic demonstration sports in the past, both are supported in xkoranate, and neither has an established worldwide competition series. The IV Olympiad format, suitably modified for number of entrants, will be satisfactory in each case.

We will enter teams in men's and women's Gaelic football and in mixed korfball (korfball teams are mixed by definition) should they be contested.

ATTENTiON

i've just realised i'd made a small mistake in my roster in that i slightly miscalculated the style modifier. i'd just like to mention that i have changed this.

(i.c.) Unitopolis, as hosts of the Gaelic Football World Cup, fully support the inclusion of Gaelic Football.
