Staffing

Manager: Curtis Steeling; 41
Curtis Steeling once again is taking charge of the Ethanese National Football team for the third World Cup running, and his tenth football tournament of all kinds. Impressing in his capabilities as manager, he has commanded a team from the first World Cup, where the team finished a measly 5th in the group, to finishing second in the previous World Cup qualifiers, only missing out on qualification because of an away goal Banguela scored against the Red Kites in the playoffs of the previous qualification period, winning 2-1 at home before losing 1-0. Even though last World Cup he turned to his style of 'Explosive Football', which did help the team and has been kept as the philosophy of the Red Kites since, Steeling does have an emphasis on a strong defensive structure, evidenced by the fact that in both World Cups so far, the team has let in less than 1 goal a game, and only ever lost at home once in the two World Cups so far, to a strong Saintland team. Curtis Steeling has managed Ethane for 73 games, winning 24, drawing 18 and losing 31 of them. Steeling and Ethane have an average of 1 goal per game scored, and and an average of 1.2 goals conceded per game. However, he has not had quite such success in the Campionato Esportiva as he has the World Cup, crashing out in the group stages in both that Ethane have participated in so far. The team have had a fairly decent run into this World Cup Qualifiers though, with an away win against Unified Sunrise Islands and an away draw against Abanhfleft instilling some hope in Steeling's ability. This have somewhat been counteracted by the losses against Cosumar and Bonesea, and the much lower ranked The Great Pi, but most of these being higher ranked made these games a long stretch to win, apart from the one against The Great Pi. He will have to perform this qualifiers though, as the board like to put pressure on Steeling, and have said that following the performance last cycle, they want the team to qualify for the world cup this time around.

Assistant Manager: Gareth Barley; 42
Following the ultimatum given to him at the start of the last World Cup Qualifiers, Barley has massively improved his managing techniques and people skills, which has somewhat helped with some of the strong results the team has achieved over the past two years. The board recognised his performance, and have allowed him to stay on awhile longer to work with Barley. However, it is thought that his future is tied up with Steeling in his role, and if Steeling were to leave, it is likely Barley would also leave or be forced out.

Offensive Coach: Steven Carlsting
He has brought through the new era of 'Explosive football' in the Ethane game, with great success, and is seen as the figure guiding the style forward, evolving it to adapt to new situations. He is firmly in place after the teams performance last world cup, but if the team were to struggle in front of the goal, then he would be under pressure to leave.

Defensive Coach: Adam Hurnley
Following the recent friendlies, Hurnley will be under pressure to make the defence work in the world cup, as the team has been going through a period of sloppy defending recently. It's his job to correct it, and if not, he will lose his job.

Goalkeeper Coach: Harry Bentley
Bentley has been fairly successful in his role as goalkeeper coach, with strong performances from the goalkeepers in both previous world cups instilling some hope in the team. He probably has the firmes job of all in the staffing lineup, but still knows the board wants the best he has to give to this team.

Physio: Keith Lambeth
Medic: Kerry Hanners

The Players

Following the successful qualification campaign last World Cup cycle, which saw Ethane beat The Holy Empire, and miss out on qualifying for the World Cup only because of away goals in the playoffs against Banguela, the team are in a good place to come into this cycle and push for qualification. The team know that qualifying automatically is almost completely out of the window, with sharing a group with number 4 ranked Eura basically ending all hopes of that, but the space through the playoffs is still open for grabs, with the team having to beat out Ficiscia to reach it. The team are fully determined to reach that spot and finish off what they were oh so close to doing last cycle.

Defence

Goalkeeper: Joe Henderson; 33; Hullbury Town
Caps: 22
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Clean Sheets: 11
With good vision, Henderson rarely lapses in concentration, and is extremely focused, always paying attention to where the ball is, and what he should be doing. He does take the role of sweeper-keeper sometimes, not to the extent of some other keepers, but he will do it when there is a goal at risk, and no defenders around to help him. A tall goalkeeper, he does have good reach over the whole of his goal. However, he is not so good at one-on-one situations, and his performance on set-pieces can sometimes let him down. However, his ability to stay calm under pressure, and perform well when any penalty is given, guessing correctly most of the time, makes him in the manager's eyes, the ideal candidate for goalkeeper.

GoalKeeper: Brody Church- 28- South Saints FC
Caps: 37
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Clean Sheets: 12
At 24 years of age, he has plenty of experience to his name on the domestic league side of things, playing with South Saints FC as their first choice goalkeeper for the past 5 years, excluding the second season of the Explosive League format, which he was out for injury. He has had experience of the pressures that come with playing international football, and has shown he is capable of dealing with them, and remaining calm when the pressures are greatest, which is when his concentration is vital. He has a good work ethic, and is always concentrated on the game at hand, rather than letting his mind wander when the ball is not near. With strong reflexes, and a good dive to him, he is the perfect candidate to protect the net in Ethane's first venture into the world cup.

Goalkeeper: Nelson Delamora; 19; Briston Rovers
Caps:1
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Clean Sheets: 0
The youngest of the players on the side, Nelson is more of a prospect for the future that is being included to give him a chance in a game or two if the possibility arises. He certainly has been getting plenty of playtime when it comes to his own club. However, with other contenders for the starting position, he is unlikely to play too much in this qualifying process, and will be looking one or possibly even two cycles more before he'll be contending for the starter of main substitute spot. Young, and quick in dives, he can be a bit gullible, and occasionally falls for the most basic of tricks. He rarely comes off his line, and when he does, he often is not very effective when doing so. He has a good reach across the stretch of his goal, but remains a liability in penalties, having not fully developed the art of keeping out penalties as of yet. He is one to watch for the future, but don't expect him to make much of an impact this cycle, if he even gets that much gameplay.

Left-Back: Bruce Washington; 31; South Saints
Caps:13
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
His pace on the wing makes him a key counterpart in the defence, closing down oncoming wingers, and preventing them from crossing the ball into the box. Not quite so good with the tackling game, sometimes a bit clumsy, and not with the best style of tackle to take the ball in style, he prefers to intercept and block, which is an ideal thing for the left-back to have. He is at the peak of his career, and has the best pace he has had in a while coming into this world cup, but the question is how will he do this cycle, because he is expected to be one of the key players of the Ethanian squad, but it is whether he will be performing at the same level for the next cycle.

Left-Back: Rene Beckenhauer; 23; Briston Rovers
Caps:5
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Certainly a player not to be reckoned with, she likes to act tough on the pitch, and does appear to be this dominating figure in left-back. However, what she has in bulkiness, she loses in pace, and while young, provides more of a tackling wall then an actual pace defender. Used more when the team goes into defensive mode, she is very good at preventing crosses being whipped into the box. While not the most agile, and can be easily outskilled, her dominance tends to throw an air of superiority over the pitch, and is a very intimidating sight on the pitch for the defenders to come face to face with.

Left-Back: Cliff Driscoll; 32; Bourne River
Caps:5
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Driscoll is a very mature and intelligent player, bringing a wealth of experience to his games, and proves a useful mentor for those younger players who are not so mature and experienced. With good knowledge of the game, and experience, he knows many of the tricks in the books, and is difficult to fool on the pitch with gameplay, and is difficult to wind up and get to lash out against you. He has alright vision, and while there are players which can place themselves better for the opposition attacks, he is fine at this job, and can quickly reposition himself if he needs to, especially with his knowledge. His pace does sometimes let him down, but he has enough pace to provide a threat somewhat in attack down the wing, either supporting the left midfielder and distributing the ball to them, or whipping in crosses to the centre himself. He is not an authoritative player, and does like others to take charge, and direct the style and direction of play, not having much input in the tactics very often - not a good candidate for captain, but he is a mentor, like was said earlier, when asked, and can be someone which younger players look up to, with his calm demeanor and wealth of knowledge. He does get on well with most of the team, and tries to stay out of conflicts, and does not try to dispute the referee's calls, but when a terrible call does come up, he can sometimes get a bit infuriated. He is not the most bulky of players, and is not very intimidating, but he has an alright slide tackle, and while not the best, does get the job done.

Centre-Back: Darien Fear; 23; South Saints
Caps:43
Sub-Caps:3
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
He is seen as sturdy character. He also remains a constant feature due to his youthfulness and pace that comes with that, but also due to his demeanour at such a young age, which the selectors think will bring massive reward to the developing national team. He has also been included due to his consistency and ability to surprise, even when no one thinks there are any surprises left, which has been reinforced by recent games leading up to this World Cup. Darien Fear is not afraid to put his body on the line for games and results, sometimes to the level of getting an injury, which was seen in the previous season, when he had to miss 2 games due to an injury obtained from a bruising, but legal tackle. Sometimes, this attitude can lead to fouls though, and he has seen a few red cards in his days. He is an extremely passionate player, and puts all his emotions and energy into the game, and a result. However, while he has the best intent, and is one of the better players, he can sometimes get a little overexcitable, and make a few silly mistakes, which sometimes lead to goals which could have been prevented if he was a slightly mature player. However, with the few downsides that do sometimes create mistakes, he remains a very highly skilled player, and is a defensive masterclass, as well as an attacking aid sometimes. However, in this squad, it is likely he will be remaining back, with the move to a less defensive formation, which leaves the back open more, and will therefore challenge the defence to perform to a higher standard as pressure is placed on them to perform. It remains to be seen whether Darien Fear will be a little out of his depth or not, as at South Saints, he is used to a five-at-the-back defensive formation.

Centre-Back: Daniel Moore; 26; South Saints
Caps:13
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Seen as the more mature, older counterpart to Darien Fear at South Saints, he also proves to be the player slightly less willing to put his whole body into the tackle, and the one to prefer to stand back more, survey a scene, and position himself accordingly, intercepting and blocking, with some tackles, rather than jump into tackles, which is where Darien Fear is more experienced, making them a great partnership in defence for South Saints. Certainly more mature and more experienced that Darien Fear, he is a more of a commanding figure, who is more controlled, and looks at the overall tactics rather than individual incidents. He is more of a technical defender, and is better on the removing the ball from the back than other defenders, which suits his position as a peripheral defender. He is a very defensive defender, and does not tend to help out with attacks, rather staying back when it comes to corners, unless in the last minute or so, when the team is on full attack, and even then he stands a little way back. He has strong vision and positioning, and sees a sneaky pass coming more often than Fear, putting them as possibly the most successful partner in the league, as they compliment each other. He doesn't often close down players, and is more of an interceptor and blocker.

Centre-Back: John Campbell; 33; Cassandra City (Cosumar)
Caps:22
Sub-Caps: 0
Goals: 1
Assists: 1
He is experienced and mature, and takes a great mentor role in the squad, being one of the key leading players for younger players, such as Darien Fear, to idolise. He is losing his pace as he gets older, but he still is very switched on, and is quick off the mark, as well as holding a brutal tackle to his plethora of skills. He can be intimidating in the squad, but has a good relation with everyone on the team, which is conducive towards a working environment. However, he does not have the greatest stamina, and is sometimes only used as a defender brought on to hold on to a result towards the end of the game, or substituted off towards the end of a game. He is good with headers. Some of his tackles can be dirty, which can lead to him being sent off on occasion. He is the captain.

Centre-Back: Alan Barnes; 22; Gaelic Club (The Licentian Isles)
Caps:5
Sub-Caps:10
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Alan Barnes is a very skilled 20 year old, and is very aware in his positioning, which benefits his role - ideal for the centre of someones defence. What he lacks in pace he makes up for with his awareness, and combined with any teammates he has, does a good job at preventing too many attacks from the opposition. He can occassionally be dragged forward into the attack, and does well in this role, but this can sometimes leave the back more exposed to counters. Has good stamina and can normally last the whole 90 minutes, but is prone to certain injuries if taken down badly. Some training would likely rectify this however.

Centre-Back: Kyle Cooper; 27; Bourne River
Caps:2
Sub-Caps:1
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
Good with the head, he tends to be referred to as an all-rounder who is good in many aspects. He doesn't get involved in attacks too much, and prefers to stay in defence on corners and the like. He is fairly pacey, but can sometimes lack on the slide tackles, but has still got some decent tackles compared to many people in the league. He is very cool-headed, and likes to work in unison with the team, in one large unit. Can sometimes try to dominate in decisions however, and no matter how cool-headed and nice he seems, he can occasionally be fairly annoying, which sometimes leads to opposition players, and teammates, to retaliate.

Right-Back: Archie Holmes; 31; Bourne River
Caps:11
Sub-Caps:4
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
Holmes has proven to be an experienced, yet low-maintenance in training, he has over his footballing career, developed from a shy, lower league player who was average, to a top quality, top league defender. He has a very shy attitude to himself, which is why he tends to struggle somewhat with media interviews, although he does cope. However, he is certainly no longer shy on the pitch, and no longer shies away from big slide tackles. He is rather lean, and tall, but he is still good with slide tackles, although sometimes fouling in them. His pace also helps him develop attacks down the wing, and move up to advance and score, especially when the team is behind, and they need to push to get the levelling goal. While he may not be the best with vision - he is not always the best when positioning himself in comparison to over national team players - his willingness to get stuck into the game, his work ethic, motivation, pace, and technical skills have made him an ideal candidate on this team, and booked his place on the plane to places such as The Holy Empire, when the need for him arises.

Right-Back: Joshua Cook; 20; South Saints
Caps:11
Sub-Caps:0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
He has a sense of immaturity to the gameplay, and it has to be said that his skills and gameplay have certainly not been completely refined yet - he is still fairly raw and can be sloppy at times. However, with guiding mentors in the team that would be willing to help him become a better player, and this world cup giving him some experience, this should be, as well as a great world cup for him to come out and perform in for the team, a great learning experience for him, no matter how much he actually gets to play. He is a solid, consistent defender, and having made a mistake, tends for the most part to not repeat that mistake again. However, his inexperience does show, as he can sometimes be duped in some tricks, sometimes ones that he has not experienced used against him before in the flame league in Ethane. Not so good on the attacking front, he does tend to be used more when the team is on full defensive mode, but with training, he might be able to develop this attacking style of right-back skill as well. Not so good on the headers, he tends to press up against the corner kick taker, or not take a place in front of goal for them. He has got a good sized kick to him, and can sometimes be seen switching the sides of the pitch that the ball is on, to confuse the opposition, and open up gaps in the opposition defence, also helping on clearing the ball, and distributing.

Right-Back: George Smith; 31; Bourne River
Caps:2
Sub-Caps:1
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
A strong right-back, Smith certainly has got brains in his play. He is a very technical player, and good at positioning himself, so he is a good interceptor and a good blocker. Not so good on the tackles, his pace helps him in that respect. Good also on aiding attacks, he is seen as more of an attacking player for a time in which the team is attempting to quickly recover. Highly respected in the team, and in the nation, and doesn't retaliate easily to provocation.

Midfield

Central-Defensive Midfielder: Alex Brown; 22; Bourne River
Caps:0
Sub-Caps:2
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
A very defensively minded player as a defensive midfielder, the position he has taken is seen more as a connecting role to the attackers from the defence, but still retaining a very defensive style of play, in order to make up for the one defensive player they have lost due to the new formation under the ''Explosive'' style of football now adopted by the team, a phrase coined in the media ever since the new formation was tried out in some friendlies leading up to the last world cup. Brown is seen as a controller of the game, sitting in the back of the midfield. He has good vision and maturity for such a young player, and can get a good overview of the game, making him ideal with his decent long and short passing to play the role of a distributor. He does occasionally help attack, but this is rare, because he likes to play a lot closer to his own goal than some other players in this position may like to play. He has some good technical skills to get round players, although he is not amazingly brilliant in this department. Not quite so good on set pieces however, and tends to position himself wrong on these, or make a bad mistake. He can sometimes be brilliant, but when he is in an off-day every once in awhile, the whole team suffers, because of his important role in the team. He has an alright stamina, but sometimes cannot make it to the end of the game when he is starting, so is substituted off in the second half at some point. He has a calm demeanour, but when pestered lots, he can sometimes retaliate, due to his inexperience in dealing with the brutish nature of international football. However, it is unlikely his retaliatory behaviour would make headlines (apart from possibly in Ethane) or get him sent off the pitch. It would probably more likely get a yellow card.

Central-Defensive Midfielder: Gerald Coleman; 24; Hullbury Town
Caps:1
Sub-Caps:0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
He gets the job done well, and therefore deserves a spot on this team. He also can help out in attack sometimes, and takes a much more aggressive role in this position, often pushing forward more than other players would in this position, and therefore better for when the team is trying to level with little time to spare, when the team is on full attack.

Central-Defensive Midfielder: Merlin Midgley; 29; South Saints
Caps:32
Sub-Caps:0
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
Described by some as a 'warrior', many have said he is fully deserving of this position, but other people argue that it was just him being the coach's cousin that helped him get into the squad. Nevertheless, he does have some valuable skills that this team could use. He is a very balanced player, and does not prioritise offence or defence while in this position, preferring to play in between. He is less skilled in passing, and is more of a dribbler, meaning he can take move into the large gap in his team in the middle of the pitch, and work in that space. He can see good runs, and makes the move to aid them as well, making him an extremely beneficial, though controversial, and arguably not quite so good as other player could have been, member of this team.

Left Midfielder: Grady Stevens; 26; Loconstead United
Caps:1
Sub-Caps:4
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
He is seen as a fundamental threat to any team with his crosses, and certainly one that they would need to stifle. Stevens is a very fast player, one of the fastest in the league for matter of fact, which helps him with his deadly runs on the wing. Where he falls down is defence, which is something that he is certainly not quite so good at, struggling with interceptions and tackles. However, with good vision, and decent long passes, as well as short, he gets an overview of the game, and can sometimes control play from the left wing, distributing the ball across the whole range of the pitch. While he certainly won't help out much in defence, the hope with him, and his pace and possessive style of play that he likes to take, and his ability to knock in decent crosses, he proves an excellent candidate for the role of LM in the team, and is expected to live up to his name on this team as the player who has the most assists to their name in the past season.

Left Midfielder: Kevyn Stidolph; 27; Mansestra
Caps:51
Sub-Caps:7
Goals: 2
Assists: 17
Not the fastest of wingers, he can sometimes be caught out by faster players, but his technical skills when with the ball can help him with his attacks, and he can outdo players and trick them. He also has some defensive skills as well, providing a backup of sorts for the defenders if they do get overwhelmed in the new, less defensive system that the team now follows. He also has the skill of having great awareness and vision, which allows him to spot the perfect run and either deliver the ball to his running teammates feet to take it further, or to whip the ball into the box, and give either the perfect kick or header to his teammate, in order to increase the likelihood of a win.

Centre Midfielder: Jack Potter; 32; Letson Town
Caps:1
Sub-Caps:1
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
Potter doesn't appear good in the stats, but when you actually see him play, he works wonders in midfield. Balancing attack and defence perfectly, he provides a post which keeps the team in a uniform structure. He is good on awareness and vision, and is always where he needs to be, and with the ability to distribute the ball around the pitch, is a perfect choice for this team. However, due to the formation of the team, there is no centre-midfield position naturally, so he will only be used when the team is in full attack mode, and going all out for a draw. Potter will provide more of a power substitute in order to save a match, rather than a starter that will dictate the whole game.

Centre Midfielder: Russell Johnson; 28; Mansestra
Caps:1
Sub-Caps:10
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Much like the other selected centre-midfielder, he is a very dynamic player, with great vision, so that he can distribute the ball to other players. However, with more of an attacking tint to his play than others, he can occasionally provide a deadly attack, to aid the rest of his team. Due to his position, he is seen more as an attacking super-sub, but it may be seen that he is included in one or two of the games this world cup, just not necessarily as a starter. With an occasionally foul attitude however, he does not stand well to provocation, and can retaliate, although as with all retaliations from Ethanians (for the most part), these are normally just a few harsh words rather than any actual action against the imposing player.

Right Midfielder: Edward Williamson; 34; Letson Town
Caps:20
Sub-Caps:1
Goals: 0
Assists: 8
An experienced right-winger, what he brings to the team is not so much pace to his play, but more knowledge of where and how to play best, as well as a wealth of technical skills, which can frustrate opposition players. HHe doesn't have the cleanest of crosses, his consistency, and knowledge of the game, has given him a direct role in this team. He doesn't have the cleanest of crosses, hence why the team prefers to play crosses from the left, but he is good at spotting runs, and can make decent through balls for strikers, which don't always register as assists.it remains to be seen whether Williamson, who has failed to impress in recent friendlies, is able to perform in this team with the limited players in midfield - something he is not used to either as a member of Letson Town, or in recent friendlies in the world cup, and is something he has not adapted to yet.

Right Midfielder: Branden Veresoto; 22; Old Sarum
Caps:4
Sub-Caps:13
Goals: 0
Assists: 3
Veresoto provides a very dangerous attacking threat to anyone who tries to face him down. Not quite so adept in crossing the ball, or assisting in goals, he is definitely not one to look out for if you want a team goal, as he is not great with working with other people on the pitch. Seen as very hostile to teammates and opposition alike, quite often getting into fights on the pitch, which can often result in cards, he is easily infuriated, and refuses to work within the rules, which is something that has made his inclusion in this team extremely controversial, especially after his track record.

Offence

Striker: Dewayne Boivin; 32; Doherty (Red Blackiland)
Caps:56
Sub-Caps:9
Goals: 31
Assists: 1
Having performed astounding well in the final season of the amateur Ethanian football league, saving his team from relegation to finish 15th out of 20th, 15 points above the relegation zone, when they were predicted to finish dead last in the league, he was quickly picked up on by the national team manager, Curtis Steeling, who rapidly gave him a starting role on the national Ethanian team for the Baptism of Fire - a controversial move which proved to work out well for the team. Having had plenty of experience in the lower leagues of the football pyramid in Ethane, he has a solid experience base of which to base his attacks upon, and fulfil the role of lead Ethanian striker that he seems to have acclaimed through his performances in the Baptism of Fire and the World Cup. He has the ability to deliver the goods when needed, and perform well when the pressure was at its highest level - a difficult feat for any player of any calibre. He transferred away to Doherty at the end of the first 'official' season of Ethanian football at professional level, where he has now stayed, and become a decent member of their squad, scoring goals when needed. With a strong final touch, he is good at connecting with crosses and finishing shots, with a good accuracy percentage and goal to shot ratio. One of his main downfalls, however, is his speed, which, with his age, means that he cannot rush around the defenders to get a clear shot on goal, and more and more now, relies on other players to deliver the ball to him and bring it up the pitch, where he tends to sit, ready for any counter attack that may materialise, rather than helping out with the defence, where he would not prove much use to the team. It remains to be seen how much he will actually get to play in this cycle, or in the future, as the manager moves towards the younger strikers as Boivin starts to grow old, and it also remains to be seen whether Boivin can adapt to the new, less defensive system, where he is part of a triad at the strikers end of the pitch, rather than all on his own, or with only one other striker.

Striker: Thomas Peone; 30; Merseyshore City
Caps:7
Sub-Caps:8
Goals: 3
Assists: 0
Thomas Peone is a talented, and experienced player, who is at the optimum of his career. Peone has proven to be a capable and deadly force in front of goal, and able to find the net many a time from his shots. He is very much like Boivin in his play style, as he is a much slower player. He does not have extreme place like some strikers do, and is more suited to a possessive style of play, and occasional counters - much like the new 'explosive style' as the media have coined it, that the team follows. While Peone may not be so good with headers, as he struggles to get enough power, or direction on the ball to pose an aerial threat, the threat he supplies with long shots, and volleys off crosses, makes him plenty a deadly enough threat to be included on the national team for this world cup.

Striker: Jose Morgan; 29; Mansestra
Caps:9
Sub-Caps:0
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Not quite as prolific as his fellow striker, he has still made a somewhat strong impression on the team, with not only his ability to score, but his unselfishness. Jose Morgan could be described as more of a pace striker than an expert finisher, zipping in between defenders, and using technical skills to get a shot on goal, rather than finishing with prowess. He is one to get the job done. His heading is also a lot stronger than that of most of the other strikers in the team, providing a dangerous aerial threat on corners, crosses and the like. He is a very cooperative player, and places the glory of the team above his own glory, not hogging the ball. He is not great on long shots however, and does have some flaws when forced to play out slightly wider, sometimes driving too far to the wing, which can damage the efforts of the team. However, all in all he is a strong striker, and well deserving of his place on the national team.

Striker: Julian Harrington; 30; Birdingstone United
Caps:11
Sub-Caps:2
Goals: 1
Assists: 0
He is certainly a threat in front of goal, and his determination makes sure he never stops fighting for a goal, no matter how desperate or easy the situation is in a specific game. He is quite a confrontational player, and can sometimes get up in players faces, in order to put them off and intimidate them. However, when a foul is miscalled, he can be respectful, and correct the ref some of the time. He is of an average speed in terms of pace, and is not that technical in his play, so somewhat relies on the ball being delivered to him, but he is a large threat when he has the ball in front of goal.

Striker: Julian West; 25; Cardnid Town
Caps:1
Sub-Caps:1
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Talented in finishing prowess, he is an expert at the chip shot, and is often first in the line when playing to take penalties. Mostly cool-headed, he does not tend to lash out when provoked. Also with some beneficial talents that help in defence, he is an all-rounder striker that helps with determination and passion wherever on the pitch he is needed. He is fairly pacey, and can zip around the pitch relatively quickly, which makes up for his lack of technical talent.

Striker: Yvonne Merry; 28; Osgarl
Caps:0
Sub-Caps:2
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
She is certainly a threat on goal, and can take long or short shots from anywhere. While she does not have the pace that some other players can manage, she does have a finesse to her play that only a few players manage. She has proven herself to be a team player as well, putting team over personal prestige, through her willingness to pass to someone else for an easier shot than take one herself.

Striker: Samuel Mitchell; 19; Mansestra
Caps:15
Sub-Caps:2
Goals: 6
Assists: 0
Mitchell is a natural star, and is great with the press. With his youth comes great pace, which brings him the ability to zip round opposition players, to get the best shot on goal. While his finesse and technical ability when with and without the ball is certainly not fully developed yet, he has the passion, determination and ability to get the job done, which speaks testaments to the great player that Mitchell is. However, this also speaks about the greatness yet to come from this player when he is trained up and reaches his optimum playing capability, and while he may not prove to be the best at this tournament, as he may get overshadowed by other Ethanian players, and therefore may get less playing time, and he may fizzle out from the pressure that is put on players at that level, as well as his immaturity in his play (although he is a highly respectable and calm figure on the pitch), his goal from this will be to pick up a bit of experience, get some decent training in, develop his abilities, and prepare for the star that he could potentially become in the future.

Striker: Wilmer Jaurequi; 19; Urrheddiao (Chromatika)
Caps:16
Sub-Caps:18
Goals: 4
Assists: 0
Taking the last spot in the squad comes Jaurequi, another future star to look out for. He has some pace, but is a very raw, inexperienced, and undeveloped player, who will be looking more into the future for increased involvement in the national team, as he will be overshadowed in preference of other, more experienced players at this world cup. He does not have the best temper however, and may be involved in a controversy or two when he plays (imagine a young Wayne Rooney).

Tactics

Ethanian football has changed direction recently. No longer will the team be following the ultra-defensive style of football used by Curtis Steeling in the last cycle, but will instead be adopting a new style, still slightly tinted by a defensive formation, coined by the media as 'explosive football'. 'Explosive Football' is the culmination of an increased supply pool of strikers, and a rather poor roster of teams with defensive capabilities sufficient enough to be included in this team.

It is a policy which now includes 4 players at the back, rather than 5. A more possessive style of football is played, with a focus still on defence, but the team has more of a policy of keeping the ball than before, passing it around the back. The team will have sudden (explosive) bursts of attacks, where they will advance quickly on the opposition in phases, and get a load of shots at once, overloading the defence of the opposition team, before referring back to their original, more defensive format. Counter-attacks are also used occasionally as a viable form of attack when out of possession and when being rapidly attacked when the chance arises, but the team is a much more possessive, pass around the team, slowly work their way to a goal style of play.

Stadium

King Edward IV Stadium
Image

The stadium is situated in New Sarum, the capital of Ethane. It can hold 60,000 people in the setup as shown above, and will be used for all home games. The stadium can be accessed for fans from shuttle buses from the airport, and locations around the city. Plenty of accommodation has been set aside for travelling fans, and will be able to be enquired about on line in the lead up to games, and at the airport upon arrival.

INTRODUCTION

When Russ Reucassel picked up the mic at Union Park for his initiation speech and said that change was coming, he apparently meant it. Henry Coyle's WC75Q campaign squad in entirety (minus one) is six feet under and completely out of the picture. The news came as a major shock for the Free Union, who were expecting to see the likes of Axel Aubry, Max Fawden, and maybe even Titus Blackett or Saul Vesper just once more before they hung up their boots for the last time - but an aging Sebastian Nielsen is the lone relic of Acronius' AK75 campaign. The fiery, combative attacking spirit from which Acronius had made a name for itself was replaced by a calmer, reserved mentality, the exact type of play Acronius had never wielded in their history. The typical lineup with Blackett at its helm and Massali or Nielsen at its base was replaced with a bunch of kids who haven't even gone through puberty yet, and three-quarters of the bench are remnants of Acronius' U-18 squad 12 years ago. With the Blue Boys' starting eleven now reduced to an average age of 19 years old, most of Acronius discreetly or indiscreetly want the new Nepharan manager to leave as quickly as he had come. As that obviously won't be happening, the faith of the nation, no matter how reluctant of begrudging, will have to stand behind Reucassel as a group of unproven teenagers toss their hats in the ring to become the first Acronians to qualify for the World Cup.

STARTING ELEVEN

GK - Sebastian NIELSEN • #1 • 33 years old • Image New Llama Stars • CAPTAIN
An athletic yet efficient and reliable goalkeeper, Nielsen is known in particular for his positional sense, acrobatic saves, and shot-stopping abilities; however, despite his reputation propelling him to the status of first-choice goalkeeper for the Free Union, he has also been heavily criticized for his inconsistency in goal. In his prime, Nielsen was recognised for being quick to rush off his line and at getting to ground, and for his handling, aerial ability, and command of the area, as well as his reliable distribution, footwork, and ball skills, which occasionally led him to take on defenders in his youth. Despite the loss of some of his power, explosiveness, speed and mobility in recent years, he has continued to excel at the highest level due to the consistency of his performances, as well as his positioning, decision-making, and his ability to read the game and organise his defense. In addition to his goalkeeping abilities, Nielsen has been singled out for his leadership, and has been described as "a key dressing room personality", leading to his appointment as team captain following the departure of Titus Blackett. He has been described as "an agile, strong, and commanding shot-stopper, who is hugely experienced at the highest level" and "an accomplished and well respected keeper" with "an excellent positional sense, courage, charisma, power, and class." Nielsen has also been praised for his athleticism, his acrobatic dives, and his quick reflexes, despite being a large, imposing keeper; however, he is an ineffective penalty-stopper.

LB - Paul ALTHUSSE • #13 • 18 years old • Image Olympic East
Althusse is a strong player who excels in the air, making him a goal threat on set-pieces, and he is usually a competent, albeit aggressive tackler. He is gifted with pace, good technical ability, as well as good distribution, passing, and crossing ability. A physically strong and tenacious defender, he is known for his aggressive challenges and for his violent behaviour on the pitch, an element of his playing style that has been widely criticized. Althusse has been described as having a good work ethic and the ability to carry the ball and retain possession for the team. He has been praised for having a good passing range. This aspect of his game has shown improvement since his debut season, when he began to favor simpler passes over more ambitious ones, and his relatively high pass completion rate can be attributed to this change. Althusse's passes have often proved to be crucial; in the past he has led the way in his team's assists. Early in his career, Althusse mainly played a offensive role, leading to a number of assists, and even goals. As his career has progressed, he has begun to incorporate a more defensive approach to his play, with his role shifting to being mainly based on tackling and tracking back to shield the defence, before the 18 year old eventually abandoned the midfield and cemented his spot in the back line. His violent playing style lead him to set the record for the most red cards received by a single player in one Union League One season, earning himself 8 in 29 games for Force Olloix before he transferred to Olympic East.

CB - Pierre PAULOIS • #3 • 17 years old • Image Force Olloix
Paulois is a large, consistent, and physically strong player, known for his powerful tackling and strength in the air, as well as his ability to read the game and intercept loose balls. A technically gifted and tactically versatile central defender, he is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder. At 1.95 m (6 ft 4 in) and, Paulois is commanding in the air but he is also sound in defending on the ground. He often uses his strength to shrug opponents off the ball and his standing tackling ability to win balls. Despite his strength and power, he is regarded as a clean player, as he is rarely booked. Paulois is known for his concentration, strength, anticipation, positioning and aerial ability, which made him particularly adept at defending crosses or scoring with his head from set-pieces, partially due to his height. He showed himself as a dynamic, consistent, and tenacious defender throughout his blooming career, and also excels as a man marker and at performing tackles. Despite being a defender, Paulois is noted for his technical ability and distribution, and occasionally, for his finishing prowess, and strength with his head. In addition to his technical and physical ability, Paulois also possesses an excellent positional sense and an acute tactical ability to read the game, and he excels at tightly marking opposing players, as well as at preventing and anticipating attacking plays. He is also an accurate and tenacious tackler. Excellent in the air, Paulois is also unusually quick for a centreback.

CB - Louis MAÇON • #4 • 17 years old • Image Force Olloix
Maçon is an extremely dominant, consistent, athletic, and attentive footballer. As a defender, he is known for his strength, pace, stamina and his outstanding physical, tactical, and technical attributes, as well as his ability to read the game, his heavy marking of opponents, and his aggressive tackling. A powerful and versatile player, Maçon is a natural centre-back who is equally competent offensively as he is defensively, and can play on either flank, often alternating between playing as a right-back or as a centre-back, and was even deployed in midfield on occasion. He has remained a dynamic, consistent, and tenacious defender throughout his short career, and also excels in the man-to-man marking system and at making tackles. Although he predominantly excels as a centreback, due to his ability to read the game, he was also deployed as a right or left sided fullback on occasion, in particular under Force Olloix coach Pierre Leroi during the latter half of his debut season. Maçon is known for his concentration, strength, anticipation, positioning and aerial ability, which made him particularly adept at defending crosses, or scoring with his head from set-pieces, aided by is relatively large build, even for a defender. Maçon began his career as a left-back, but made his name as an aggressive, physical, and hard-tackling centre back, with a penchant for scoring headers from set-pieces, due to his aerial prowess and strength. A versatile defender, he is capable of playing both in a three or four-man defence.

RB - Dimitri PÉGUY • #5 • 16 years old • Image Force Olloix
Péguy began his youth career as a right offensive winger, but was later moved back into mid-field and thereafter the defensive line, where he became a tactically intelligent and versatile player, who was efficient anywhere in midfield or in defense. Although capable of playing anywhere along the backline, he primarily excelled on either flank, where he combined his defensive attributes and his ability to read the game with his excellent vision, technique, and ball distribution skills, even able to start attacking plays on occasion. Péguy has been recognized as a complete defender by his peers and critics. He has been described as a consistent defender, with flaws few and far between, as well as someone who can lead a defensive line despite his irregularly young age. Péguy is heralded as one of the fastest defenders in Acronian football, and has been described as a strong defender with good aerial ability. He combines these physical gifts with a phenomenal tactical intelligence and knowledge of the game, as well as an excellent positional sense. Thanks to his abilities, he excels at reading and anticipating plays and is excellent at closing down opposing players in possession of the ball. Hailed as the forefront of the new breed of defenders — composed in possession, able to create chances for his team from the back — Péguy is a defender who has been nationally praised after just one season in professional Acronian football.

CDM - Marin TRÉSOR • #6 • 18 years old • Image Emerald City Harmony
A complete, consistent, hardworking and versatile midfielder, Trésor is regarded as one of the best holding midfielders of his emerging generation, and is effective both creatively and defensively. Gifted with good technique, excellent vision, and varied passing range, he excels in the deep-lying playmaking role, where he can best use his accurate long passing ability to create goal scoring chances for team-mates; he also possesses a powerful and accurate shot from distance, and he is an effective set-piece and penalty kick taker. Due to his height, positioning, and physical characteristics, Marin Trésor is also effective in the air, often contributing with headed goals from set pieces when advancing into more offensive positions. In addition to his creative attributes, he is also capable of excelling as a defensive midfielder due to his strength and powerful physique, combined with his tenacity, tactical intelligence, aggressive tackling and his ability to read the game. These attributes, in addition to his pace, strength, pressing ability, and stamina, allow him to effectively link the defense, the midfield, and as a result, the attack. Though playable to a certain extent further up front, Trésor found the bulk of his quick success in Force Olloix's defensive line - his standout performance with Olloix's defense in his debut season resulted in the team conceding a mere thirteen goals in 30 Acronian Legends League games. The achievement prompted former manager Henry Coyle to single him out as a potential future captain of the national team.

LM - Antoine LE KERVELEC • #7 • 19 years old • Image Rosaria United
Le Kervelec is a quick, tricky and talented winger who is also capable of playing as a more central attacking midfielder or on either side of the pitch, although he is predominantly a right-footed player. In recent years, he has even been deployed to great effect as a central midfielder, in particular under Louis Jeandidier's tenure with Azemont Champions FC. Le Kervelec is an agile, creative and highly technical player who possesses excellent dribbling skills and ball control, as well as great pace, stamina and acceleration, attributes which allow him to beat players easily in one-on-one situations. He is also gifted with excellent vision, passing and crossing ability, which allow him to function effectively as a playmaker and as an assist provider, although he is also capable of scoring goals himself. Despite not being physically imposing, he is also a very hard-working player, and further improved on the defensive aspect of his game throughout his youth career. Playing on the left also allows Le Kervelec to use his "bursts of acceleration and weaving runs" to effectively cut inside, which gives him the options of either shooting or delivering a decisive pass. Inside Acronius, Le Kervelec is well known for his blistering pace, with Azemont Champions FC defender and fellow international Rémi Lefebvre declaring that "you would need a pistol to stop him." In addition to his speed, Le Kervelec also possesses good balance, movement and technique.

RM - Jérôme PASTEUR • #8 • 17 years old • Image AFC Defense
A quick, diminutive, and mobile winger, who is also powerful, creative, and technically gifted, Pasteur's style of play is characterized by explosive acceleration, agility, and pace on the ball, as well as excellent dribbling skills, most notably his use of trickery and feints such as the elastico, in order to confuse and beat defenders, making him a dangerous offensive threat. A versatile player, he is also capable of playing in several positions, and has also been deployed as a forward, in midfield, or as an attacking midfielder behind the strikers. A fast, agile, hard-working, and technically gifted player, he primarily plays as as an attacking midfielder or a winger, and his high stamina, vision, and creativity enables him to link-up play between the deeper midfielders and the forwards, and create goalscoring chances. Pasteur is a talented right footed winger, who is usually deployed on the right in a 4–4–2 or in a 4–1–2–1-2 formation. Although his preferred role is on the right flank, he is capable of playing in any offensive position on either side of the pitch, or even through the centre; he has often operated in a more creative role, as an attacking midfielder or supporting forward, due to his passing, vision, ball control, and dribbling ability, which allow him to beat opponents, create chances, and provide assists for team-mates. A hardworking player, he is known for his creativity, agility, balance, vision, speed, and technical ability. He is also capable of scoring goals himself, and is an accurate set-piece taker.

CAM - Ryan CHIMNEYS • #16 • 18 years old • Image Lionsgate National FC
A technically and creatively gifted player, Chimneys is a versatile attacking midfielder who primarily plays in a playmaking role, and can additionally play on either the left or right flank. Gifted with good composure on the ball as well as disciplined decision making and passing, Chimneys is an agile player who tends to roam around the opponents' defense looking for an intelligent and creative pass or through ball. He has great attacking play both on and off the ball, and also has substantial attacking positioning which allows him to have one of the best eyes for goal. Perhaps his best qualities are his agility, pace, creativity, positioning during attack and the ability to pick out a key pass. He also possesses outstanding pace and is more than capable of attacking and scoring goals himself. Chimneys primarily plays as either an attacking midfielder or a winger and was once credited as being "possibly the outstanding talent in Acronian youth football". Under former manager Louis Jeandidier at Azemont Champions FC, Chimneys often played in the latter role in the team's 4–3–3 formation and regularly switched flanks because he could use both feet and also because of his aptitude in passing and crossing. Two of Chimneys' most common exemplary traits are his pace and technical ability, which have been described as "astonishing" and "mesmerizing", respectively. Chimneys' pace coupled with his finishing and inability to be dispossessed easily led his former manager Henry Coyle to dub him 'the Machine'.

LF - Joe DI SCAMPI • #9 • 20 years old • Image Cannich
A creative forward who usually functions as an assist provider in his team, di Scampi is capable of playing anywhere along or behind the front-line, on either flank or through the centre of the pitch; in addition to his usual role, he is able to act as an advanced playmaker, and has also been deployed as a striker, as a false-9, or even as a winger on occasion. di Scampi has been described as a player who is "skillful and intelligent on the ball" who possesses "excellent vision and also impresses with his eye for goal". His best technical qualities are his trapping skills, control, dribbling, crossing ability, and passing accuracy; although naturally right-footed, he can also strike well with both feet. In addition to his skills and technique, di Scampi also possesses considerable upper-body strength and balance, which aid him in defending the ball with his back to goal, and allow him to retain possession in tight spaces, while his technical ability and acceleration enable him to beat defenders in one on one situations, or when dribbling at speed. A quick, strong and versatile player, di Scampi is a well-rounded forward who has been deployed as a main striker, as a winger, in a supporting role, or even as an attacking midfielder, due to his ability to link-up with midfielders, and either score or create goals. A creative and technically gifted striker, he is also known for his dribbling skills, mobility, and pace on the ball, as well as his ability to make attacking runs towards goal from deeper positions.

RF - David PASCALE • #10 • 16 years old • Image Stade Défense
Pascale is a creative, energetic forward who combines technical skill with strength and physicality, while also excelling in the air despite his lack of height. He is a versatile attacker, capable of playing anywhere along the front line: although his preferred role is as a striker, he has also been used as a supporting forward, or even as a winger. A prolific goalscorer, Pascale is a powerful striker of the ball and an accurate finisher, who is capable of scoring goals both inside and outside the penalty area, as well as from volleys. In addition to his offensive attributes, he has been praised for his work-rate and stamina by players, managers and the media, and is highly regarded for his dedication and willingness to press opponents when possession has been lost in order to win back the ball and start attacking plays. Pascale made debut in Acronian professional football in the Acronian League Two with Stade Défense, pioneering the failing team to the top spot in the league and clinching promotion to the Acronian League One. A quick, modern, and versatile left-footed forward, with an eye for goal, Pascale has been described as a "team player", and is capable of occupying several offensive positions in or behind the main attacking line, due to his technical skills, ability to drop deep and link-up play between the forwards and midfielders, or score many goals with both feet as well as his head: he has been deployed as a main striker, in a central role as an attacking midfielder, or as a winger, on either flank.

FORMATION & TACTICS

Image
Playing in a brand new 4-4-2 diamond formation wide, the revamped Acronian squad has since incorporated a larger defensive element to their game plan, with Force Olloix's (former - now minus Althusse) entire defense promising to add some chemistry in the back line. With the hulking Pierre Paulois-Louis Maçon duo to shield Sebastian Nielsen and hold the centre strong, fullbacks Paul Althusse and Dimitri Péguy possess the pace to be able to mount offensives and to perform overlapping runs with Antoine Le Kervelec on the left and Jérôme Pasteur on the right respectively. A promising central defensive midfielder in the form of Marin Trésor could be considered the core of the lineup - functioning as a secondary playmaker, first-choice free kick taker, a backup offensive option, as well as dropping back and occupying a sweeper role when needed. On his day, Antoine Le Kervelec can be next-to-unbeatable along the wing, with thunderous pace and tremendous dribbling ability to storm him down the left flank. Opposite the half-circle, Jérôme Pasteur plays a less in-your-face game, but is more than capable of downing a defender or two and scoring goals himself. Ryan Chimneys functions as the lineup's main playmaker and assist-provider alongside Joe di Scampi - and although one is a central attacking midfielder and the latter is a second striker, both have dead eyes on goal should target-man and traditional number 10-style striker David Pascale not get to the net first. Despite first glances, the formation holds true to the Blue Boys' traditional offensive playing style, while striking a balance with a solid back four aided by a central defensive midfielder. Play can be equally distributed along both flanks as well as the centre - and total football tactics play an intrinsic role in holding the team together.

The Ouadaian National Football Team

The Ouadaian National Football Team was founded in 1967, shortly after Ouadai gained independence from France. The sport of football had been introduced by French colonialists, and one of the marks they left on the region was an abiding love for the game. Since at least the 1950s, football has been the most popular sport in Ouadai, although the nation never produced a noteworthy player during the colonial years.

It was only after independence that the first formal football leagues and associations began to form. The first organized clubs began to form. In 1967, the Ouadaian Ministry of Culture financed the creation of Ouadai's first domestic football league, the National League (commonly called League 1) was founded. Shortly after this, and in anticipation of the 1970 World Cup, the Ministry of Culture agreed to finance a National Football Team made up of members from the newly-created National League. The team had no luck at qualifying for the 1970 or 1974 World Cups, and was de-funded after that, being relegated to a mere sideshow in international football (although domestic football leagues continued to thrive).

It was only in 1998, when football enthusiast and member of the Ouadaian Royal Family, Ali ibin Umar Al-Karim, purchased the ailing Kolak-Abéché FC, that the Ouadaian National Football Team was revived. For the last 20+ years, the team has been the pet project of Ali ibin Umar Al-Karim, and has participated in several dozen international friendlies, but relatively few ranked matches. The team did try, again unsuccessfully, to qualify for the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups.

In preparation for the upcoming Baptism of Fire, Ali ibin Umar Al-Karim hired a French citizen, Julien Marechal, as Head Coach in an attempt to infuse more outside expertise into the team. Julien Marechal was a former assistant coach of AS Lyon-Duchère from 2011-2016. He has been given broad leeway to choose his own team members from among Ouadai's domestic teams, and to develop the team as he sees fit.

Mattijanan Roster and Information for World Cup 76

The Story So Far

After a shocking qualifying campaign that saw Mattijana win just one match and fail to progress to the finals, Mattijanan football experienced a significant revamp with a turnover of both management and players. Matej Ljubanik, previously of FK Burges was appointed as the first full-time national coach following the dissapointment with a variety of staff joining him from The top Mattijanan teams. The change in staff has naturally brought a change of style with the high-energy attacking style dropped and a more skillful, but conservative approach taken in posession, a punchy counter-attack and more shape defensively preferred.
The change has bought results with a better run in the Campionata Esportiva in the regime's infancy and much fewer goals conceded than ever before. There is still work to do however, and this world cup cycle poses the first real test of a competitive and settled Mattijanan side. The objective for the team this year is to qualify for the finals.

Recent Results:

Mattijana 2-0 Ethane (Neutral venue in Tumbra)
Mattijana 2-2 Fhulghamous Peninsula (Neutral venue in Tumbra)
Tumbra 2-1 Mattijana (Away in Tumbra)

Team Info

Style Modifier= -1
Team Colours: Green and yellow
Away kit: Navy and Black
National Association: MattijanaFusbalBand (MFB)

Head Coach: Matej Ljubanik
After a succesful, but not scintillating playing career, Ljubanik started his management career with mid-table division 2 side, Savaflug, who had recently lost Max Juremchuk to division 1 side Revinka. He lead the side to an unexpected 3rd in the table, just short of a promotion place, but acheived his goal of promotion the following year at which point there was speculation of him making a move to FK Petrovijanka or to Puljanka. Out of loyalty, he remained at Savaflug for a season, ensuring they retained their top flight status with a 14th/20th finish, before making the move to FK Petrovijanka.
After a slow start, Ljubanik began to make progress with his style of football and managed to lead his side to fifth in the championship with the promise of more progresss the following year. That duly arrived with an incredible start to the season giving way to a consistent run of points that ended with a comfortable championship victory.
Another decent run at the start of his third season with the club saw Petrovijanka sitting in second place in the championship behind FK Burges. At that point, the national side began to show interest and Ljubanik made the commitment that was wanted by everyone apart from the supporters of Petrovijanka.

Ljubanik has a calm style of football with passing play encouraged and a punchy counter attacking system. Defensively, he likes to see meticulous organisation and clear defensive shape, something that was somewhat lacking under the previous coaching team.

Assistant Manager: Dominik Samikov (FK Burges)

The assistant manager at Championship leaders FK Burges hails from the North-East of Mattijana and began his career at Dinamo Legisaw, another division 2 side before then moving as one of the tactical staff to FK Burges, where he has since worked his way up the pecking order to assistant manager. He has an excellant tactical mind as well as good player welfare skills and helps out Ljubanik in both management areas. He has so far proved himself to be a capable aid.

Head Scout: Marcel Kuzbacher

Marcel Kuzbacher is a seasoned scout, mainly plying his trade for the famed Puljanka Academy. He has links with numerous players in the Mattijanan squad as well as the under-21 side and makes up the 3-man selection panel alongside Samikov and Ljubanik.

Fitness Coordinator: Jelena Neumanič

Jelena Neumanič is responsible for the diet and fitness of the squad, freeing up the main management team to think about tactical matters. She has a solid repetoire of exercises and is well-known for getting on player's backs if they don't keep up with their expected effort levels.

Psychologist: Samira Kazmir

Samira Kazmir is an experienced sports psychologist who has done work for both the summer and winter Olympic teams, the Mattijanan ITT side and the MRT motor racing team. She is responsible for the mental welfare of players, stretching from the collective mindset to more personal issues for each individual in the squad and may have a tough task on her hands if this tournament turns out like the last.

The Medical Team:

Head Doctor: Dr Charlotte Smitič
Assistant Doctor: Dr Mattias Buranov
Physio: Martina Laramazič
Physio: Mika Glasnić

The Players:

GK-Matej Handanović-#1

The 27 year old Mattijanan number 1 plays under Matej Ljubanik at FK Petrovijanka and has been a solid, if unspectacular option between the sticks for most of his career. He has good handling skills and makes few mistakes, but could be replaced if he fails to make the spectacular stops expected of him.

LB-Helena Neumann-#2

The Burges Player is a regular in the championship leading side and will provide a good defensive option with the occasional run forward to help out the wingers. Barring any injuries or unlikely suspensions, she will play all of Mattijana's matches,

CB-Edvard Crajasović-#3

The towering centre back is a regular for a Revinka side currently sitting fifth in the division 1 tabke. His height gives him a significant advantage when defending ariel balls and presents a threat at ser-pieces. However, he can be clumsy when faced with skillful runners and does rely on a more quick-footed defensive partner in order to be successful.

CB-Katija Burnisevič-#4

Another Burges Player, Burnisevič is a potential answer to Crajasović's clumsiness and is a quick, skillful and sure-footed player capable of taking the fight to those attempting to run through. She is a dedicated player, happy to chase any lost cause until the ball crosses the line. Her lack of physical strength may be her weakness however and she could be a potential target for more powerful strikers.

RB-Dominik Illisević-#5

An up and coming full-back for Puljanka, Illisević is a punchy and pacey player with outstanding fitness and good crossing ability. His defensive technique is the biggest question mark, but if he can have a solid match at the back, he will undoubtably be a danger coming forward.

LM-Sophia Velezia-#6

A mazy winger with less raw pace, but the ability to turn any defender into a messy knot, Velezia is a constant challenge to keep quiet on her day and normally gets through at some point if she hits top form. Her mercurial nature is her biggest and arguably only weakness, but Mattijana will be well-placed if she can get it together.

CM-Marko Hojbjerg-#7

Another young midfielder at just 23, Hojbjerg is a playmaker with good awareness and passing ability and is the perfect fit for Ljubanik's technical brand of football. Useful for connecting the more attacking players ahead of him, he is also integral in providing the start or the killer pass in a counter-attack. When no forward options are available, he's not afraid to hit one and occasionally finds the back of the net from improbable ranges.

CM-Jago Adrianov-#8

Adrianov is the typical midfield enforcer with a hard tackle and a driving run on him which can terrorise both attackers and other midfielders. He's also not afraid to hit one from range with varying success. He is probably the most likely player to pick up cards however, so could be a potential liability.

RM-Jessika Struna-#9

A pacey winger who's preferred play is to make a run and then a cross, the 24 year old Struna is a dynamic and different part of the Mattijanan team. She normally plays for Revinka, but has been tipped for a move to Burges or Rapid Petrovijanka.

FW-Mathilde Lekarisa-#10

A fairly fresh face in the side, Rapid Petrovijanka's 25 year old forward is a lethal finisher with a left foot that makes up for a lack of power with high precision. She enjoys running onto through balls and cutting inside to curl shots into the far corners of the goal. She is expected to play well having scored 5 goals in her last 4 games for Rapid.

FW-Andreas Weiss-#11

The 27 year old Burges Striker has been a fixture in the Mattijanan team for a while now and has matched his performances for the national side with consistent scoring form for FK Burges. He is a poacher with the ability to be in the right place at the right time for any pull-back into the box. Also a good header of the ball, Weiss will be an intimidating target for high crosses if the Mattijanan plan-B is needed.

The Bench:

GK-Lucija Handanovic-#12-Age 24-FK Revinka
RB-Kevin Krychowiak-#13-Age 20-Matbirjke
CB-Marcel Hausmayer-#14-Age 30-FK Antalja
CM-Katarina Jakupovic-#15-Age 21-Sparta Snezn
RW-Sofiane Bisrali-#16-Age 20-FK Shalkar
CDM-Sezer Julianov-#17-Age 32-Rapid Petrovijanka
ST-Daniella Alaba-#18-Age 24-Puljanka

The Reserves:

GK-Martin Vaskaric-#19-Age 20-FK Antalja
LB-Lara Ljunavic-#20-Age 26-FK Revinka
CAM-Mattias Hoffman-#21-Age 23-Rapid Petrovijanka
FW-Katja Tauskas-#22-Age 22-Matbirjke

Welcome to Mattijana!

Mattijana is a huge safe nation with a significant, but proportionate population. It spans a fairly large range of climates with the far north a colder area, the central region temperate, the south Mediteranean and the South-East semi-desert. Petrovijanka, the setting for this competition, is located almost exactly in the centre of the country at 214-232 metres above sea level. It has summer highs of around 28°C and lows of -5°C in the winter. There is a high level of sunshine for most of the year with precipitation mostly snowfall in the winter months.

Culturally, Mattijana can also be divided into six regions. The West of the country is largely Germanic whilst the centre North is a mix of Slavic and Germanic cultures, centred around Mattijana's second city, Burges. The North and East are mainly Eastern European (closest to Polish irl) whilst the Centre (where Petrovijanka is situated) and the South are Slavic (similar to the Slovenian and Croatian cultures). There is an Arabic community in the South-East.
All Mattijanans speak the official language, Mattijanan. However, due to this not being spoken anywhere else in the World, English and German are well-spoken throughout the country whilst Arabic is taken on by the most intelligent students (in addition to English and German) as well as by those in the South-East.
There is no official religion in Mattijana due to this mix of cultures. Islam is popular in the South-East and parts of the South whilst some in the East follow the Mattijanan Orthodox church. Most people hold no religious belief, but believe in the universal philosophy of being kind, welcoming and helpful to others. Even in religious communities, it is these principals that are most talked of with religious figures used to preach them.
Due to the mix/match nature of Mattijanan cultures, religions are also a little mixed up. This is the reason that most muslim women do not wear headscarves.

Attitudes to drink and sex are fairly liberal whilst there is good gender, sexual and racial equality. Social mobility is also good and the rich earn only twice as much as the poorest.

The government follows mildly socialist policies meaning the tax rate is fairly high, but schools, hospitals and other public services are all well-funded and reasonably-priced. Taxes on large businesses are higher than on small ones. The government building is the MattiStaja, which is situated on Staja square in the centre of Petrovijanka. All six regions have their own smaller congresses however. Politicians are generally appreciated and although public decisions are limited to elections and important political decisions where the main population is the most affected, most citizens feel well represented due to the numerous meeting and discussion opportunities with their local politician.
All parties follow a similar philosophy, but mainly disagree on where to fund the most. The MattijanaLeušaBuro is the current elected party, but other popular parties are the ViroBuro (who generally promote the needs of the environment) and the NašinalBuro (who promote funding for employment opportunities). Despite this attitude, unemployment benefits are actually quite low in order to encourage people to be hard-working.

Transport
Transport around Petrovijanka is excellent due to good funding and staff dedicated to customer service. The nearest International Airport, Petrovijanka International, is situated to the North of the city and is a 20 minute train shuttle from the city centre. The airport is modern and very well equipped and has its own train station. For the duration of the championships, the shuttle service into the city will be free.
Inside the city, there is a very good tram service with the main station just off Staja square. This is where all 5 lines terminate. The Western line is the one that serves the TierZentra.

The centre of Mattijana is fully pedestrianised, but are large car-parks that can be used for a small fee around the city perimeter. Cycling is a popular way to get around the city, but is difficult around the Staja Square area due to the multitude of people.

If you wish to see a little more of the country, express train links are available to Matbirjke, Revinka and Puljanka whilst internal flights can be taken from Petrovijanka to Revinka and the coastal towns on the West coast.

Burges has modern infrastructure with good tram links around the city and an International airport 15 miles West of the city centre. There is a shuttle link from the airport to the main station in Burges which will be free for the week surrounding each match at the Stadijo Nasinal. The city is more modern in general, so only the central area is pedestrianised, but there are numerous safe cycle paths and while it is easier to navigate Burges by car than Petrovijanka, we strongly discourage foreign supporters to bring their car with them. It takes around five minutes to reach the Stadijo Nasinal, which has it's own tram station, from the ZentaPlas terminal in the city centre.

Around Petrovijanka
Virtually in the dead centre of Mattijana, Petrovijanka was founded in 1450 and is centred around a large island (now called the PetroviOtok) in the middle of the Sava Petrov river. Staja square, the geographical and spiritual centre of the city, is in the middle of that island with the East river and West river (OstSava and VestaSava) surrounding the island. The city has since spread out on the mainland, but retains much of its impression and beauty a long way from the centre.

Petrovijanka is an architecturally stunning city with many buildings dating back to the 1700s and a good 2km radius before the buildings become more modern.
The city centre is based around Staja Square and then spreads out in circular streets from there. The main sights are the MattiStaja itself, the NašinalMusej (the national Mattijanan museum) the KatarinaTurn (a large nineteenth centry tower made of sandstone and steel which offers outstanding views of the city and its surrounding area) and the PetrovKera, an ornamental triple layered footbridge over the West River with an art exhibition on the top floor, a market on the middle floor and restaurants and cafes on the bottom floor.
Puljanka is the main music and theatre city in Mattijana. It is easily accessible by train and is roughly 1.5 hours by this means, however, concerts and plays are regularly put on in the NašinalTheatre in Petrovijanka and are incredibly high quality.

Around Burges
Located in the Centre-North of Mattijana, Burges was founded in around 1620 and is widely regarded as Mattijana's second city as well as the main business city.
Burges is in general a more modern city than Petrovijanka, but still has a charming old town on the South side of the Sava Juliana river which flows from West to East just North of the city centre. The main sights are the ZentaNordMusej, the museum for the city and centre-north region, the BurgeGrad, a seventeenth century castle and palace, the NordesParke, a large park, public gardens and promenade complex by the river and the KatarinaKirche, the second biggest cathedral in Mattijana with an ascendable dome and bell tower.

The Venues

Stadijo Dinamov
The Stadijo Dinamov in Petrovijanka is the second biggest football stadium in Mattijana and is one of the five stadiums that share the hosting honours for international matches. It is used on a weekly basis by FK Petrovijanka, Matej Ljubanik's old club, having built by them in 1940 and upgraded twice in 1972 and 2001. The capacity is 60,000.
The stadium is found on the East side of the PetroviOtok, near to the Stadijo Kolmetzov, one of Mattijana's international cricket grounds.

Stadijo Nasinal-Burges
Image

The Stadijo Nasinal is Mattijana's largest multi-purpose sports stadium with retractable grass and astroturf surfaces to cater for cater for Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Football matches. There is a capacity of 90,000. The Stadium was built in 1985 and heavily upgraded just 2 years ago in preparation for the Cricket T20 World Cup. It is situated on the South bank of the Juliana river, just next to the water and just East of the NordesParke.

KRYTENIA 2238 WORLD CUP SQUAD
Modifier: +3

THE MANAGEMENT TEAM

Manager – Dario NAVAS, Age 51
Rami Niblick's former assistant manager. He's a little more defensive than his predecessor, which is like saying that black is a little darker than hex colour #111111.

Assistant Manager – Cordell TATE, Age 53
Goalkeeping Coach – Michael VERDETTI, Age 59
Defensive Coach – Steven PRIMROSE, Age 54
Offensive Coach – Mark YAKIMOV, Age 57
Physiotherapist – Jessica NELSON, Age 53

THE SQUAD

Image
Devon WILLIAMS
Age: 24
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Emberton Reds

Six-foot-seven, seventeen stone, and as agile as a cat. If he wasn't a goalkeeper, he could get a job in acting as "Scary Black Man #3".

Image
Marcus LYONS
Age: 29
Position: Right-back
Club: Bradwell Saints

Energetic defender with a keen eye for a pass.

Image
Mitchell MITCHELL
Age: 33
Position: Left-back
Club: Ashton Olympic

The man with possibly the most unimaginative parents ever, "Mitchy Mitch" is a force to be reckoned with in the tackle.

Image
Rob ADAMS
Age: 30
Position: Centre-back
Club: Mercia Bromham

Cultured centre-half who feels most comfortable in a pressing game.

Image
Alfie XOUSA
Age: 34
Position: Centre-back
Club: Avidia United

Combining intelligence with pace, Xousa has matured into the thinking man's centre-back.

Image
Mark RANKINE
Age: 33
Position: Central midfield
Club: Stanton Town

Looked to be heading for the scrapheap before Stanton took a chance on him; he's repaid that faith with a string of high-class performances in the engine-room.

Image
VALRAUNCION
Age: Elf
Position: Forward
Club: Telecontarë (STB)

Ah, the infamous elf. Valrauncion is, at least for now, the only Krytenian international who can lay claim to a World Cup winners' medal. He made a home for himself in Ousevale over the years, and when Starblaydia withdrew from international football at the end of World Cup 57, the KFA made a cheeky request to naturalise the striker and offer him a place in the cyan. To their astonishment, he accepted. Now back where it all began for his club, the Cyan Army still knows that he may be a cock, but he's OUR cock.

Image
Marco ANGELO
CAPTAIN
Age: 36
Position: Right midfield
Club: Emberton Reds

Maturing like a fine Chablis, Angelo has lost only a little pace, and crosses beautifully. The one downside is that he no longer has Ronnie van Rijn to aim at; the upside is that Alex Sampson has developed in a similar vein. Also, Valrauncion.

Image
Alexander SAMPSON
Age: 32
Position: Forward
Club: Ousevale Borough

Ronnie van Who of Where? Alex Sampson is banging them in for club and country, and we couldn't be happier.

Image
Armando ORTEGA
Age: 30
Position: Attacking midfield/forward
Club: Avidia United

Where to begin? Plays like the ball is glued to his feat, is completely fearless against defences...and he's just about at the peak of his powers. Expect fireworks. And Exocets. Maybe the odd ICBM.

Image
Adrian ANUZZI
Age: 34
Position: Left midfield
Club: Emberton Reds

May never completely fulfil his tag as the "new Kiefer Lloyd". Captaining the Under-21s added some strings to his bow though.

Image
Jaime VERDANO
Age: 23
Position: Central midfield
Club: Avidia United

Slick passer of the ball with slicked-back hair and a smooth style. One for the future.

Image
Marcus BAILEY
Age: 33
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Mercia Bromham

Excellent all-round talent; unfortunately for him, seems doomed to the role of second choice stopper for the national team.

Image
Neil DONNER
Age: 32
Position: Right midfield
Club: Ashton Olympic

One of the best players to come out of the Mother Bear City in years (Mitchell Mitchell was signed from Ousevale Juniors, so he doesn't count.) Loves to make full-backs work.

Image
Damiano MORENO
Age: 23
Position: Right-back
Club: Avidia United

Burst on the scene in the latter half of Liga Calania Season XV. Bags of pace.

Image
Scott PERSHING
Age: 33
Position: Central midfield
Club: Caledon Simpson

A late bloomer who's been turning heads. Has the unfortunate job of being Ortega's understudy.

Image
Leo FLORES
Age: 27
Position: Forward
Club: Avidia United

Flores is, *ahem*, blossoming nicely as a striker.

Image
David HOLZMANN
Age: 33
Position: Forward
Club: Royal Emberton

Clinical in the box, but could do with improving his workrate off the ball.

Image
Stephen ROSSI
Age: 26
Position: Centre-back
Club: Stanton Town

No-nonsense, hard-tackling central defender.

Image
Michael COKER
Age: 35
Position: Centre-back
Club: Leston Town

Ah, Leston, the City of Industry. No surprises, then, that Coker is a hard-working engine in the back line.

Image
Peter ALEXANDERSSON
Age: 28
Position: Left midfield
Club: Royal Emberton

Excellent crosser of the ball; not the fastest, if we're honest.

Image
Owain MORGAN
Age: 25
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: New Cefn Albion

Lists former national team hero Arian as his inspiration. Gets plenty of shot-stopping practice as Albion keeper.

Image
John MARSHALL
Age: 31
Position: Left-back
Club: Ousevale Borough

A rough diamond, tends to be too happy in bombing forward and exposing the defence. Good skills on the ball, though.

LIKELY STARTERS
Williams
Lyons - Xousa – Adams – Mitchell
Angelo (c) - Verdano - Anuzzi
Ortega
Valrauncion – Sampson

The Euran Football Association’s 76th World Cup Qualifying Squad

Manager: Steve Thompson (57, Eura)

All time Euran record appearance holder Steve Thompson, with 301 caps to his name and 75 goals, was made Euran manager amidst much fanfare ahead of the 20th Copa Rushmori and qualifying section for the 71st World Cup. By beating Tom Benedict, several other former Eura internationals and international candidates to the post, Steve had set himself up with the tough task of helping Eura recover from three consecutive poor performances at World Cup finals. Eura seemed to gain more defensive stability and ruthlessness under Louis Watson in his short spell as Thompson's predecessor, but while they dispatched of the minnows easily they underperformed badly against the higher seeds, and then fell apart in the group stage. Only a deserved draw with Valanora salvaged any pride as the respected but not highly rated Watson bowed out of international management. However Thompson turned things around with a surprisingly good performance at the 20th Copa Rushmori, though once again they came up just short of finally winning it - Eura continues to be perhaps the biggest underachiever in the tournament. His Eura side made it to the final before falling to an unlucky defeat in extra time against Sargossa by the score of 2-1, despite a headed goal from Craig Gilbert.

Many questioned whether or not this form would translate into the World Cup, and Thompson's side proved the doubters wrong. Their initial qualifying charge included a number of good wins including victories over Semarland and Mangolana, interrupted only by a frustrating draw in neighbouring Szavoda. However a loss away to the top seeds Royal Kingdom of Quebec, followed by draws against Semarland and Sandwich Territories, temporarily derailed Eura's qualification hopes. Thankfully Thompson turned it around, and powered on by veteran Skorji Oslograd's goals, they qualified. At the World Cup itself Eura finally broke their chain of group stage embarrassments, beating co-hosts Yttribia and the ever potent Farfadillis; their last game was an ignominious defeat to Star United States but they made it into the next round anyway. In the Round of 16 Eura encountered their qualifying rivals Royal Kingdom of Quebec and proved to be their bane once again, beating them 2-1, before beating Turori in an absolute thriller on penalties. However Eura's surprise advancement into the later stages was ended in the semi-finals by Rushmori rivals Pasarga, the goals of Brigham's Dominik Mauer sinking the Euran's despite Skorji Oslograd's 100th international goal. Eura's performance in the 21st Copa Rushmori was less admirable as they stumbled through the group stage before an undeserved quarter final exit to Taeshan.

The next cycle was met by more outstanding football and more heartbreak while Brigham were having that season at home. Eura blitzed their way to their third World Cup final, living up to the hype that followed the last cycle. They were particularly potent in having the most dangerous goalscoring record of any team, especially given Ashtree's age and Campbell's rawness being the only options up front, and went on a remarkable run of form that culminated in a famous 5-0 semi-final drubbing of Vilita. However Eura's newest nemesis Pasarga stood in the way again and defeated them at the final hurdle in a tight contest, and then knocked Eura out of the Copa Rushmori in the later stages on penalties after Eura had started impressively, and had won a 5-3 thriller against rivals Sameba. After these close misses, Eura were wondering what they have to do to win an international tournament again. Despite this it had been a good time for Eura, at 2nd in the world - their highest ranking - and it is hard to argue that, on paper at least, only Pasarga had claim to be better. However there remained some lurking doubts; Eura's previous two finals produced the same issues of key players about to pass their peak and major changes to the starting lineup, and were followed by a quarter final exit and then several years of mediocrity.

Finally, at the 73rd World Cup, all doubts were erased as Thompson cemented himself as a legend as both a player and coach for Eura by winning the World Cup, making Eura the first country from Rushmore to do it twice. An exceptional squad with an exceptional manager swept away a qualifying group of intermediate difficulty with a 100% record, a first for the Euran national team, before kicking off the World Cup with a memorable 7-3 thrashing of Free Republics. Confident victories against Ceni, Cosumar and Apox followed before a rather overconfident Farfadillis who had just shocked Osarius 5-1, were swept away 6-1 by Kris Campbell and company. After Eura's normal time win streak was ended by a draw against underdogs San Jose Guayabal, which ended with Eura winning a drawn out penalty shootout for the first time in a while, they were set up for a tantalising final clash with Pasarga. Eura, despite their fantastic record, were considered slight underdogs against Pasarga due to the perceived mental barrier Eura had developed against the side from northern Rushmore. Thompson and his team were finally rewarded though for their efforts with a tight but deserved victory over the Pasargan's, after a spectacular campaign including particularly exceptional performances from the likes of Craig Sinclair, Kris Campbell, Craig Gilbert and John Spartan. They followed this up by finally winning the Copa Rushmori, beating Taeshan in New Gelderland.

Unfortunately, Eura failed to defend either of these titles. They were as brilliant as usual on their way to the World Cup but their now ageing defence looked frail, and was exposed against Pasarga in that sensational 6-5 win, as well as in several high scoring victories and draws in qualifying. It all came apart against Nephara, who they had beaten 4-3 in the group stage, by the same margin but in reverse. Then at the Copa, Eura were advancing comfortably on home turf before an inexplicable defeat by the same margin to Polaskaan, which many blamed on an incorrect decision to send off Frank Ainsworth, and two of the visitors goals being from offside positions. It was an anti-climactic and extremely disappointing end to that tournament for Eura and has led to big changes in the Euran squad. It is a Euran team that, on the bright side, is now ranked number one in the international rankings for the first time ever. The challenge for Steve Thompson now is to replace the ageing generation that has taken Eura to heights it has never reached before, with only Kris Campbell, Joel Sutton and Frank Ainsworth remaining young from that group - Waller, Chuchilli and Rogers has retired, while Spartan, Watson, Gilbert, Blackthorn and even Sinclair cannot be around forever. Thankfully Eura have some excellent young stars.

Unfortunately, a poor performance struck at the 75th tournament, ending the good run - out at the group stage in embarrasing fashion. Or normally it would be. But the terrible crime committed against Eura by Sameba overwhelmed any thoughts of how we are doing in the football, and led to the Euran FA rearranging the scheduling so that Season 30 would start earlier, continuing the one season per World Cup schedule when they had hoped to abandon it. Oakstone have moved stadium due to pressures on their city. This has left the Euran team, who almost sleepwalked through the Copa straight after the World Cup, in a state of disarray for a short time. Now they have it back together again, and some players have taken this moment to retire from international football - namely Gareth Blackthorn, Ben Prince, Joe Caffin, Gavin Madison and Mark Rogers. Craig Gilbert was apparently persuaded to continue only due to an emotional intervention by Steve Thompson. The show must go on, and some new blood must show their worth, even in appalling circumstances.

Assistant Manager: Matt Boyce (57, Eura)

Boyce was a surprise appointment as Thompson’s assistant, having been out of coaching roles for a couple of years. However he has plenty of experience at various clubs and the national team before that and his appointment has been responded to positively. He has played a pivotal role in maintaining Eura’s improvements at the back, while his bubbly personality and reputation as a leader make him a valuable asset in the dressing room. He has been a key ingredient in Thompson's success, and has proven a lot less of a competitor, and more like an assistant, than Dimitri Campbell was to Ben Randall.

Barunia's National Football Team

Everything you ever wanted to know about Barunian Football History

The Suns continue to retain a core group of players for World Cup 76, with only a few new faces entering the squad. These include Hawks defender Adam Donaldson, who was the standout for his club last season; Mountainners goalkeeper Patrick Smith, who let through just 25 goals in 30 games, and Hannah Miller, who helped Newland FC to win the Premier League. Miller crosses between an attacking midfielder and central forward role, drawing comparisons with legendary Suns player Yohan Marris, who made such a role his own.

Of the returning players, ageing veteran Paul Bainbridge will lead the team from between the posts, while the defence is anchored by veterans Akio Sweet and Felix "the Bull" Benitez, who is playing better then ever since he moved from the Nightjars to the Eagles. The rest of the defence is also solid, with three of the Premier League's best players, including the Premier League's most valuable defender, Liesel McClelland, and defensive midfielders Cole and Kyrow. On the attack, Kass Berry will team up with Cartwright and Miller to provide the impetus, and it will be up to the three returning forwards to finish the job. Lisa "pocket rocket" Collins-Holzknecht might be the best of the three, but Bailey and O'Donnell are equally capable, with the latter responsible for 30 of Newland's 75 goals last season.

Head Coach: Joric Ruskin
Joric Ruskin played just seven international games in his footballing career, but he is still regarded as a legend in Barunian Sports. The Sun's captain during his career, Joric led them to the quarter-finals of the Baptism of Fire. In the Sun's inaugural World Cup campaign, Joric played just one game before departing the team suddenly. It later transpired that he had left to join the Socialist army in the civil war. His career as both a footballer and solider came to an abrupt end when he lost his legs in a grenade attack. Now confined to a wheelchair, the former defender for the Marion Hawks has found a new career as a football coach. His first campaign as coach saw him guide the team to their first world cup qualification (WC67), before following it up immediately with a second. While his job was in danger after the rocky campaigns of 69 and 70, a 2nd place finish in Cup of Harmony 62 saw him gain a reprieve, which he seized with both hands by returning the Suns to the World Cup in 71.
NB: As is typical of football teams in Barunia, the Suns do not have a manager. The Coach is responsible for managing the team.

Stadiums
Sun Stadium (National Stadium of Barunia), Porthaven - Capacity: 95,000
Ground will host: Osarius, Mercedini
Sun Stadium was built on the site of the old United Stadium, however it is not a renovation but a completely new building. Located in the national capital of Porthaven, Havenia state, the stadium was designed to be the home stadium of the Suns. This is evident in the seat patterning, which represents a yellow sun in a blue sky, and the golden "sunburst" roof. The stadium is multi-purpose too, creating a vibrant sports hub for the capital. During the World Cup, a party atmosphere will descend on the grounds around the stadium, as the national stadium will host the biggest match-ups of the tournament.

Memorial Stadium - Capacity: 100,000
Ground will host: Erathore, Boring Paradise
It's been a long time coming for this upgrade to the Marion Hawk's home stadium. Originally intended to be named in honour of Hawks legend and national coach Joric Ruskin, the stadium name was changed at Ruskin's suggestion to honour all those who fought in the civil war. Memorial stadium is located in Edwardton, the capital of Marion state, and is shared by both the Marion Hawks and Edwardton Eagles, which has led to the nickname "The Birdcage". One of the newest stadiums in Barunia, Memorial stadium was built by Kytlerian company BNW Varin and features a retractable roof, 90,000 seats plus terraces, plenty of room for foreign media and large movable screens at the back of the top tier.
Image

Sam Garcia Field (Northport Sports Complex) - Capacity: 43,000
Ground will host: 95X, The New North African Republic
Located in the city of Northport-San Baptise in the Northern Islands, this ground is the sacred heart of Barunian football. Located near the place where people first came to Barunia, San Baptiste island is considered the place where football began in this country. It's a ground known for firsts, hosting all home matches during the Suns inaugural World Cup campaign (due to it being the only safe ground during the civil war) and is the home of the San Baptiste Sea Lions, the first Barunian Football League championship team. Named in memory of former Sea Lions and Suns goalkeeper Sam Garcia, who died in a ferry crash that claimed hundreds of lives.

THE HOLY EMPIRE WC76 SQUAD

While the nation took a long break from WCs 8 through 24, the Holy Empire is proud to be the only active nation to have participated in WC 1.

Though it pretends not to be, the nation is equally proud to have won 4 World Cup titles

Squad:

The Holy Empire will be represented by a single entity:

The Fog-Thing of Antiquity

The Fog-Thing of Antiquity is an immortal god-like sentient creature made out of a fog-like substance.

Such is his power that he can divide himself into 11 more solid sub-entities, but these remain connected more or less insubstantially to the central fog mind; they are in essence vaguely humanoid pseudopods that remain part of the fog-thing.

Playing against the fog thing will be a damp and grey experience since his presence will encompass the entire field, even if the 11 sub-entities are the only ones that can control the ball.

The fog-thing is entirely impervious to any known form of harm.

Coaches:

The team coach remains World Cup Hall of Fame legend Juan Tzimisces

The assistant coach is Starblaydi World Cup Hall of Fame legend Simeone Di Bradini

How on earth they're going to coach an immortal god-like fog creature is, however, anyone's guess

Style Modifiers / formation

Frosty football is attacking football. The Holy Empire always plays a 3-5-2 formation using overlapping wingers that turns into 3-3-4 on the counterattack; the fog thing has taken this much on board.

[OOC'ly, for the purposes of scorination, the team uses the maximum attacking style modifier permitted by each cup's hosts.]

Kit
The team will - somehow - wear famous Imperial Gold and Red, as worn by the Holy Empire since WC1...

It's not, however, clear how a fog-thing wears a kit. Maybe the fog takes on the necessary colours?

(home top, away bottom)
Image
Image

OOC'ly, the kits were designed by Red Blackiland, and the crest by Audioslavia - and I'm entirely grateful; I'm very happy for RB and Audio to take OOC credit. IC'ly, HEFA deny the Mundies had anything to do with it.

Stadium
The Holy Empire plays its home matches in the bejewelled, platinum-domed, and purple stone-walled Imperial Hippodrome, the oldest World Cup venue still in use, and one of the most famous - and impressive - stadiums in the multiverse.

RP instructions:
Have fun; but don't kill anyone, and don't try and launch attacks on the Dreamed Realm - largely because you can't.

You can try and harm the fog-thing if that's in keeping with your RP style, but you will be wholly unsuccessful; feel free to RP that lack of success.

If you prefer a more realistic RP style, and OOC'ly dislike the fog-thing, then my recommendation is that you simply RP that it was a very foggy MD, and it was difficult to see the opposition; other creative solutions are of course welcome. But don't feel forced to acknowledge the fog-thing if it simply doesn't fit your style.

Some basic Dreamed Realm RP rules:
Remember that the Dreamed Realm lies entirely outside of Ordinary Reality, and is utterly impervious to harm from what we charmingly call 'mundies'.

Some points to remember about travel to, and playing in, the Dreamed Realm:

1) We control the nature of reality in the Dreamed Realm; reality and time are malleable within the Realm. This isn't used to cheat - all normal rules of football are strenuously followed - but it does have two major side effects:
A) Any injuries to either team in Imperial home matches are immediately healed.
B) No violent or riotous behaviour by visiting fans will be tolerated, unless permission is received in advance (please file applications for violent rioting in triplicate). Any such behaviour undertaken without appropriate permission will find those responsible immediately transported back to Ordinary Reality.

2) Direct travel from ordinary physical reality to the Dreamed Realm is impossible. Some 72 hours before your away qualifier in the Empire, a team of Archregimancy monks will arrive in your home stadium and construct a portal to the Dreamed Realm. You may then use this to travel to the Empire at your convenience.
Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια?

SEMARLAND NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM, OFFICIAL WORLD CUP 76 SQUAD

NATIONAL STADIUM - Natunolstadion, Jansberg, 86,000

ImageImageImage
Home - Goalkeeper - Away

Kits kindly manufactured by VUCTI Kits

STAFF:
Manager: Azarai Robinson (OSR), 54
The successor to Andreas Jansen, many believed the SFA pulled off quite a coup with the former Osarius full back and national team manager Azarai Robinson being named the new Semarland manager. The 54 year old won two of his three AOCAFs and the SFA are hoping he can translate that form and his experience into a solid World Cup campaign - with perhaps, this being the tournament where the Semars advance the group stage. Like predecessor Jansen in the previous World Cup, Robinson has named a pool of 42 players and has made some strong additions to his coaching team. The likes of Reiss Ryerson, Roque Urbina and Francesco Barzagalione all have Osarius national team experience and most of the coaches have been involved in coaching one way or another at an elite level. One thing is clear though - this is a new era, and Semarland fans are excited to see what the Osarian can bring.

Assistant manager: Reiss Ryerson (OSR), 71
71 years old with the voice of a megaphone, former Osarius centre-back Reiss Ryerson was named as Azarai Robinson's assistant which again, was quite a shock to Semar fans. Despite his age he is still more than able to play a big part in Robinson's backroom team. As well as that he is a very confident man, which could prove unnerving for opposition teams. Robinson did well to convince him to join him again, as Ryerson was a target of many domestic clubs to become their new manager. Whether Ryerson will ever get that chance is unknown, but what's for certain is that he will give his all in using his experience to assist Semarland as they look to do better than before this World Cup.

First team coaches: Yohan Martinsson, 47 and Jermaine Latibeaudiere, 34
47 year old Yohan Martinsson was appointed first team coach at the 63rd Cup of Harmony to replace the outgoing Sven Niemstad. Initially, he was working alongside Mako Albrechtsen, retained from the previous backroom staff but after his departure for a couple of months he was the sole general coach in Andreas Jansen's team. Experienced for his age, for the past twenty-two years Martinsson has been working as a coach with excellent all-round abilities. Hi assistant is 34 year old former Krsthaven midfielder Jermaine Latibeaudiere. A good friend of previous manager Andreas Jansen, Latibeaudiere, or "Lats" as he as affectionately known as by the players, was a central midfielder in his playing days. At 17 he unfortunately suffered a serious injury and had to retire four years later but spent eight years working as Krsthaven's first team coach. He has been a member of the Semar coaching team since World Cup 74, and has been retained by Azarai Robinson with Martinsson.

Speciality coaches: David Ustari (OSR), 58 (Goalkeeping), Martin Datheim, 49 (Goalkeeping, part-time), Miguel Rios (OSR), 56 (Defensive), Raquade Wilson-Martin, 35 (Defensive, part-time), Gilverto Cuellar (OSR), 53 (Technical), Francesco Villa (OSR), 66 (Technical), Roque Urbina (OSR), 55 (Attacking), Francesco Barzaglione (OSR), 63 (Attacking)
Robinson has brought in four new speciality coaches plus kept on previous goalkeeping coach Martin Datheim on a part-time basis, alongide former U19 defensive coach Raquade Wilson-Martin. Former Hastmead Diamante goalkeeper Ustari is a close friend of Robinson, who represented Oarius twice at the 6th Summer Olympics and World Cup 58. Although he didn't have as much international experience as Martin Datheim, Ustari was a terrific shot stopper in his playing days and both goalkeepers will be of great benefit for the Semar goalkeepers. As he is employed on a part-time basis, Datheim will only coach the team during the World Cup qualifiers. Former Firewood City right back Rios was previously employed as a scout for the Osarian national team but will provide excellent coaching to the team's full backs. Raquade Wilson-Martin has had brief top flight experience but has had some terrific work with Semar youngsters, helping nurture the likes of Amani Chimbonda before.

Technically, they will be assisted by former Hastmead Diamante winger Gilberto Cuellar, a player renowned for his supreme first touch, as well as former Hastmead attacking midfielder Francesco Villa - the oldest member of the coaching team aged 66. Offensive wise, some fans were said to be disappointed that Robinson wasn't able to persuade Rene Wilson-Ouaddou to work with them but they are very lucky to have Roque Urbina. A talented winger in his playing career, he will provide a great tutor for the likes of upcoming wingers Dequane Saint Etienne and Tre Mukondo. In terms of strikers, former Firewood City striker Franceso Barzaglione will work primarly with the strikers. Barzaglione didn't have as much as national team experience as Urbina but was still a talented striker whose experience again will be useful for the set of Semarland strikers called up by Robinson. Former attacking coach Jerome Taylor is currently considering the offer of working on a part time basis during qualifying like Raquade Wilson-Martin, but has currently rejoined the FC Kolberg setup.

Tactical coaches: Yohannas Rasmussen, 41 and Jamal Martinsson, 36
41 year old Yohannas Rasmussen is a more familiar name to most, having covered for Johan Nikkelsen in World Cup 73 who took paternal leave. Statistically, Rasmussen did a better job having taken over during the second half of qualifying and ensuring Semarland got to the finals. He will be assisted by 36 year old Jamal Martinsson - who, the SFA admitted was not the original candidate for a second tactical coach after Kangemark Sport's Marcus Haider rejected the role. There is no doubt that Martinsson is a tactical genius though, having worked with Krsthaven's U21s before working with FC Kolberg's first team. The duo will be looking to adapt to the style of play Robinson & Ryerson are expected to use - which is most likely to be the famous "Osarian 4-3-3."

Fitness coaches: Rasmus Karlsen, 47 (Lead), Sylvester Mackay (OSR), 39 (Fitness), Onyekachi Echemandu (OSR), 38 (Strength & Conditioning)
Physiotherapists: Dr. Lars Mikkelsen-Schone, 48 (Head), Mats Borg, 50, Segun Akinola, 31, Dr. Ysabel Miranda (OSR), 48
Doctors: Dr. Stefan Tramsø, 55 (Head), Dr. Åke Ulfsson, 47, Dr. Algernon Irvine (OSR), 52, Dr. Kelechi Chukwueze (DSM), 33
Psychologists: Erika Larsen, 32, Devontae Mikael Newells, 23, Karin Ejiofor (OSR), 37
47 year old Rasmus Karlsen is a long serving member of the Semarland coaching staff, having worked way back with Henrik Jensen but his experience led to him being retained by Andreas Jansen and now by Azarai Robinson. Jacob Denmark and Karmelo Ashton-Brown have both moved on so Osarian duo Sylvester Mackay and Onyekachi Echemandu both replace them. However, the rest of the physiotherapists and doctors have remained under contract (again, with most of them being around since the Henrik Jensen era) but are boosted by the arrivals of Osarian duo Ysabel Miranda (physio) and Algernon Irvine (doctor), plus Dutch Semar Kelechi Chukwueze, with the Kemsterdam University graduate arriving after working with the Dutch Semar national team for the last four years. Three new psychologists have been brought in too, with those being Semar duo Erika Larsen and Devontae Mikael Newells, plus Osarian Karin Ejiofor.

Other staff:
Performance analysts: Tobias Mikkelsen, 36 (Lead), Rashaan Jackson (OSR), 30, Clement Monaghan (OSR), 33 and Blaise Jacobsen, 29
Head scout: Karl Sorensen, 48
International scouts: Mikkel Pedersen, 43, Soren Nathanielsen, 49, Clarck Mbala, 31, Matthias Strentsberg, 35
Domestic scouts: Yoann Livimbi, 36, Mark Eriksen, 35, Deon Kentwick-Browne, 25 and Johan Martinsen, 47

PLAYERS:
GOALKEEPERS:
#1 - GK - Marco Valbuena - Age 31 - CSKA Quebec (QUE) - 53 caps
#12 - GK - Blaise N'Zonzi - Age 31 - Utica United (OSR) - 41 caps
#22 - GK - Marc Lindholm - Age 25 - Alianza FC (SJG) - 18 caps
Azarai Robinson has only named a total of three goalkeepers for the qualification campaign, with the likes of Kojo Boakye-Yiadom, Nathan Musendo, Devane Marylebone and Martin Valbuena all left out after strong seasons with their clubs. Valbuena is the likely first choice but not for long as 25 year old Marc Lindholm looks to knock him off the number one spot. It's fair to say Lindholm has developed late - at least by national team standards, with Valbuena and N'Zonzi keeping him from getting number one. All three goalkeepers have had solid season and it is likely that Robinson will rotate the three, but should likely settle for CSKA Quebec custodian Marco Valbuena as his first choice.

DEFENDERS:
#2 - DR - Nathaniel Oseni - Age 26 - CSKA Quebec (QUE) - 41 caps, 1 goals
#3 - DL - Matur Eiriksson - Age 31 - St John's Arsenal (QUE) - 130 caps, 6 goals
#4 - DC - Martell Chalobah - Age 26 - CA Paulinthal (PAS) - 47 caps, 3 goals

#19 - DR - Johan Huxley - Age 25 - Galatica (PAS) - 25 caps, 1 goal
#21 - DL - Djair Claro-Hunt - Age 21 - Hastmead Diamante (OSR) - 6 caps
#29 - DC - Devane Annan - Age 27 - FC Nuholm - 2 caps
#35 - DC - Valentin Hummel - Age 32 - Eikborg Club - 18 caps
#36 - DC - Filip Solberg - Age 30 - Duke of the North (PAS) - 2 caps
#37 - DL - Christian Parr - Age 25 - AS Bezieres (VLD) - 20 caps
#38 - DR - Lars Britsen - Age 25 - Race Point (TSA) - 19 caps
Twelve defenders named - three defensive partnerships for the qualification campaign. The undoubted first choice will be full backs Matur Eiriksson (joint vice captain) and Nathaniel Oseni who play their club football in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec with Martell Chalobah and Jakob Lunds in the centre. However, the "new wave" of Djair Claro-Hunt and Amani Chimbonda are joined by the slightly more experienced duo of Devane Annan and Johan Huxley. Finally, Robinson has chosen Christian Parr and Lars Bristen as third choice full backs, opting for Claro-Hunt and Huxley as second choices instead, whilst the more older duo of centre-backs Valentin Hummel and Filip Solberg are included in the squad after good seasons with their clubs again.

MIDFIELDERS:
#6 - DMC - Marcel Labonne - Age 30 - AFC Treason (NPH) - 67 caps, 8 goals
#7 - ML - Dequane Saint Etienne - Age 23 - Firewood City (OSR) - 31 caps, 8 goals
#8 - MC - Tunji Tunde - Age 27 - Eastal Lunar (VIL) - 74 caps, 12 goals
#11 - MR - Tremaine Mukondo - Age 24 - Firewood City (OSR) - 25 caps, 3 goals

#15 - AMC - Marc Strand - Age 26 - Telecontarë (STB) - 39 caps, 22 goals
#17 - ML - Marcel Mbonne - Age 22 - Krsthaven - 8 caps
#20 - MR - Diego Snow - Age 30 - La Nueva Avenida (FFD) - 69 caps, 8 goals
#23 - MC - Kwame Cole - Age 25 - Cassandra City (COS) - 17 caps, 1 goal
#25 - MC - Lasse Pedersen - Age 29 - Raynor City United (VAL) - 18 caps
#26 - AMC - Rene Claro-Hunt - Age 23 - Hastmead Diamante (OSR) - 21 caps, 9 goals
#28 - MC - Christian Lovenkrands - Age 22 - Handon United (SCH) - Uncapped
#30 - MC - Ikassai Donnell - Age 19 - Kangemark Sport - Uncapped
#31 - DMC - Emmanuel Sambu - Age 24 - Trothwands Evolution (OSR) - 32 caps, 4 goals
#32 - MC - Marcel Thorbourne - Age 23 - FC Nuholm - 7 caps
#33 - AMC - Devonte House - Age 19 - Kangemark Sport - Uncapped
#34 - MC - Ntumba Addai - Age 23 - Eikborg Club - 7 caps
#40 - DMC - Jahmal Sammut - Age 19 - Kangemark Sport - Uncapped
#41 - ML - Dominick M'Bia - Age 24 - Hastmead Diamante (OSR) - 8 caps, 1 goal
#42 - MR - Danny Boateng - Age 20 - Sporting Saint Adrensburg - Uncapped
A highly large amount of midfielders are named in the squad, with several players being "promoted" with more important squad numbers. Most noticeably, Tunji Tunde takes the #8 shirt from the retired Demba Cisse with Tunji Adebayo taking his previous #14. Dequane Saint Etienne and Tre Mukondo are the new #7 and #11, whilst Diego Snow is demoted to #20 with Marcel Mbonne now #17. Defensive midfielder Emmanuel Sambu is still #31 but is arguably the best alternative to Marcel Labonne. Sambu is a terrific player of course, and will face competition from Marcel Thorbourne, Ntumba Addai and new addition Jahmal Sammut, who earns his first callup after a solid couple of seasons with Kangemark teammates Ikassai Donnell and Devonte House. The two other new faces are former FC Jansberg scholar Christian Lovenkrands, who has been one of Handon United's best players in recent seasons, and Sporting Saint Adrensburg winger Danny Boateng who takes the place of FC Nuholm's Nathaniel Mavila from the World Cup 75 qualifying squad.

STRIKERS:
#9 - ST - Jakob Lindesfarne - Age 33 - Ulsa (EUR) - 57 caps, 39 goals
#10 - ST - Kwame Nelson - Age 23 - FC Jansberg - 23 caps, 28 goals
#16 - ST - Isaac Nketiah - Age 24 - Handon United (SCH) - 25 caps, 16 goals
#18 - ST - Serge Mavididi - Age 24 - Handon United (SCH) - 25 caps, 16 goals
#24 - ST - Demba Traore - Age 25 - Port Sebastian (SCH) - 8 caps, 3 goals
#27 - ST - Reiss Claro-Hunt - Age 23 - Hastmead Diamante (OSR) - 21 caps, 20 goals
#39 - ST - Yannick Simeone - Age 30 - La Nueva Avenida (FFD) - 72 caps, 29 goals
The experienced Jakob Lindesfarne remains #9 for now, despite Reiss Claro-Hunt quickly pushing up through the ranks. The "next Marc Lygaard" Kwame Nelson will likely be the first choice striker regardless though, ably backed up by duo Isaac Nketiah and Serge Mavididi who are on their way out of Handon United. Demba Traore is rewarded for his terrific club form with a place, whilst the injury prone yet still effective Yannick Simeone also gains a place. Robinson was clearly a fan of the former Molsbik Arkjet striker, with Andre Smith-Brown, Kofi Boakye-Yiadom, Seyi Oshoffa and Lasse Hummel all overlooked in favour of the tall frontman.

Since I won twice I figure I'm obligated to post this

The Isles of Avon are a small, irrelevant island chain nation in Eastern Rushmore off the coast of Terranea, south of Ceni. Drawkland wished to have territory in Rushmore, and given that Ceni had influence over Avon, "gifted" The territory to them.

Soon after, the Federation of Avonian Soccer was formed, and a league bloomed. The FAS League merged with Cenileague the next cycle to create I-League, which was surprisingly competitive between the Avonian rookies and the Cenian vets.

The 11 best players in the league that could fill a needed position were talked to and were put on the National Team for a last-second entry by FAS to the Baptism of Fire and World Cup (which has seemed to flop). Dean Regis, who managed Northampton, the first winners of the the Avonian League, was selected due to his success.

That's about it. Without a kit supplier at the moment, Avon wears T-shirts they ordered from a local custom T-shirt business. Hey, at least they got it with their names on the back. And numbered, 0-11 as shown on the above roster (including the manager). Shorts and socks were bought at a local sports supply shop.
A pleasant, quiet archipelago. Scenic views, quaint cities, clean beaches, plays football sometimes.
Puppet of Drawkland. Neighbors to Ceni. Located in southeast Rushmore.
Co-hosts of Copa Rushmori 41. Domestic league: Federation of Avonian Soccer.

Home stadium: Mount Crown Stadium, Burningham (cap. 98,000 all seated)
The Firebirds' home stadium is built at the foot of the imposing Mount Crown, on the outskirts of the capital city, Burningham. Fans are known for their extremely vocal support, and the Osarian national stadium has been described as a difficult place to play. The stats support this notion, as Osarius boast a superb record there over the past two decades. The most vociferous home fans are seated in a kop-esque stand built into the mountainside, with the huge, rocky face behind them adding to the intimidation. The pitch itself is usually made shorter, but wider than most, which is likely highly unfamiliar to most visiting teams. This is deliberate, as these odd dimensions cater to the short midfield passing and counter pressing style the Firebirds employ, as well as their frequent use of width. As a result, long-ball teams will likely find it difficult to find space behind the defence, but teams making liberal use of wingers will likely flourish. In a similar vein, a high offside trap (near the half way line, for example) will likely be more difficult to pull off, due to the speed at which a transition can occur -- with forwards still onside in their own half -- and limited space between defence and midfield.

My RP Permissions are pretty chill to be honest.
Pretty much anything goes, I only ask that you let me decide the severity of any injuries you decide to RP for me, please.
Send my players off if you must -- if its a player I really didn't wanna lose for the next game, I'll RP an appeal or something.
Oh and at the risk of sounding a bit "RAWR" ... do not kill any of my players or coaching staff (unless I say go ahead via TG).
Killing fans is okay though. Go nuts with that if you like.

Most likely to...
Score a goal: Johnson, Crespo, Carbone, Laccona, Samuels, Watson (especially if its late in the game)
Create that goal: Monroe, Watson, Allen, Urso
Win a free kick: literally any attacking player ... except Carbone. He's more likely to foul someone.
Take (and score) that free kick: Ryan Watson. Dude has superpowers. No, really.
Win a penalty: Johnson, maybe Watson
Take (and score) that penalty: Ryan Watson again. Unless someone is on a hat-trick... or he's not on the pitch
Miss a penalty: Luther Bailey. He tends to go for power, you see
Come on as a late sub: Normally a winger or a central midfielder. Otherwise, any player under 20, really.
Get injured:
Score a header off a set piece: Carbone, Laccona, Constantini, Bianchi... Butler if he gets any minutes, I suppose
Score an own goal: Yeah that one is definitely Butler
Hack an opponent down: ...erm... Butler again.
Commit a professional foul: Chelsea Byrne sometimes gets the timing wrong when rushing off the line
Lose their head and get sent off: Nobody is particularly volatile, but Darik Samuels can get a bit riled up.
Wind up an opponent: Lloyd Allen, Ryan Watson
Argue with the referee: "argue" is a strong word, but Daniele Gentile has a habit of subtlely contesting decisions
"Disappear" during a match: all of the fullbacks (except Simpson) do this sometimes, as does Ryan Watson when the midfield is under pressure
"Put in a shift": Fabio Mancini, Antonio Zapata... Will Simpson doesn't stop either.
Have an elaborate goal celebration planned out: Lloyd Allen probably
Get caught stumbling out of a nightclub: While they're not afraid of the gaffer anymore, it's actually team policy to not go to clubs
Do charity work: Constantini tends to lead it, but the whole team chips in
Talk to the media: Gentile, Watson, Johnson, Constantini... sometimes they'll pick on Monroe, and he'll answer in as few words as possible
Elicit marriage proposals from fans: Julia Price is quite popular. As is Enzo Bianchi.

I have a pretty clear tactical philosophy in mind for my team so I recommend at least skim-reading the next section, or the wiki page on the "Osarian 4-3-3", if you intend to RP the match in detail. Long story short, Osarius play in a style that is something like Arsenal's invincibles -- in that it's both possession based AND counter attacking -- while lining up in a Xavi/Messi-era Barcelona type 4-3-3 formation. It is unlikely a nation ranked outside the top 15-20 in the world could outplay them in midfield or win the possession game, but they are far from invulnerable, and have been overcome by teams playing even the simplest of tactical systems at times.

The team will generally attempt to control possession rather than engage in consciously defensive play; and "parking the bus" is a cardinal sin. When out of possession, the team will generally press high up the pitch to compress the available space -- because they are largely comfortable playing the ball under pressure -- and try to win the ball back as quickly as possible, sometimes over-committing, and leaving themselves vulnerable to a swift counterattack. Generally pacy defenders help to alleviate this problem somewhat.

Against stronger opponents, expect to see a more defensive positioning manifest itself, though. Fullbacks will be less likely to bomb forward, and the team tends to be more conservative in possession, often playing backward to draw the opposition in, before launching a devastating counter attack with pace. They will also slow down when ahead later in the game, but only so they don't unnecessarily provide opportunities to lose possession and/or concede. This doesn't mean they wont take the opportunity to score if it presents itself, though...

The front line of three is often very flexible, with all three (usually) capable of playing in any of the front three roles at any given time. Most of the time, the centre forward/striker will remain the focal point of the team's central attacking, though, whether they are receiving passes or moving to make space for the wingers.

The midfield will almost always be lined up in way that the three players form a sideways arrow (minus the shaft). By this, I mean that one will sit deep, one will push forward, and one will be a box-to-box type shuttling between the two. On the occasions no specifically named attacking midfielder ("AM" in the squad list) is used, typically it is an indicator that the manager expects a tighter battle for possession in the midfield zone, and it's likely two midfielders will be box-to-box, while the third midfielder is a more defensively-inclined (possibly even a "DM") option.

If there IS an attacking midfielder on the pitch, they will operate either as a playmaker, and most passages of play will go through them... or they will push forward from midfield a lot, getting onto the end of passes in the final third, and thus scoring a fair few goals. I'll try to highlight which of the two if I feel like it really matters. Typically speaking, if none of the other two midfielders is mentioned as being outright defensive, the attacking midfielder is a "playmaker" type.

Defensively, Osarian centre-backs are typically pacy and expected to have strong aerial ability and good positional awareness. The latter part is less important if a player is particularly quick, though. Almost certainly, one of the centre backs or the goalkeeper will be good at organising the defence. In cases where there is a notable lack of organisational skill -- typically in situations lacking experience -- there is a clear knock-on effect on the rest of the team. With that in mind, don't expect starting centre backs to be among the younger or less experienced members of the team.

The fullbacks typically overlap a lot -- considering how often the wingers change sides and become "inverted" (i.e. cutting inside the defender on their stronger foot, rather than pulling wide) -- and seem to operate almost as advanced as wingbacks (or even midfielders against considerably weaker teams) a lot of the time, making the system a sort of like a 3-4-3 when Osarius attack, due to the deepest central midfielder dropping back to a position right in front of the defence, to counter against a potential playmaker "in the hole" for the opposition. This can be a potential weak point if this player is small in stature, as they will often get drawn into the backline and thus, potentially mismatched against forwards.

If you did read the spoiler above, thank you! You don't have to stick to all of that, it just fits in better with the way I intend to RP my team (when I can).

Set piece preferences (in order):
Corner kick takers: Whichever wingers/wide forwards are on the pitch
Penalty takers: Watson, Johnson, Crespo
Free kick takers: Watson, Monroe, Allen
Long free kicks: Constantini, Bianchi, Monteforte/Byrne

Something that is important to know is that football isn't entirely the number one sport in Osarius. It sort of shares that status with GraviBall, which still enjoys more widespread popularity, as well as commercial and financial interest.

Footballers in Osarius are loved if they cover a lot of ground and make tough tackles, because the combative nature of the game is what the majority of fans like most. Very passionate, are Osarian fans, you see. Sooo... basically, if you're not scoring goals or making crunching tackles, the fans generally aren't impressed. That goes for opponents too... Osarian fans always appreciate a good tackle, so they will even applaud opposition players at times (although they will boo their goals, obvs).

The complicated tactical systems used by modern Osarian teams are well-understood by the fans, and a growing football blogging community within Osarius often has in-depth tactical discussion, and regularly posters show great insight. This is thought to be the result of a general increase in coaching quality throughout the nation, which has also contributed heavily to the national team's increased degree of success in recent years.

From time to time I'll make reference to the area a player is from, and when I do, I will try to add an OOC note to explain what it means, because different regions of Osarius have almost entirely different cultures. Same goes for ethnic groups, and I'll actually explain all of this in a factbook or something eventually, I swear!

Head Coach: Serenity Lewis
When Serenity Lewis volunteered to lead Osarius at the Eagle's Cup, it's doubtful she expected to still be in charge at this point. A runners up finish in the prestigious exhibition tournament led to the OFA asking her to stay on for the AOCAF Cup... which she did, leading the team to a third place finish. Some were disappointed, hoping to see an Osarian threepeat in the regional championship, but others acknowledged the difficulty of Lewis' task. With minimal preparation, she still steered the Firebirds to the semi finals. Not too shabby. Her leadership has seldom been in question during her tenure, even when there were criticisms of national team players for "rebel sympathies" -- relating to the decision to protest the national anthem in support of people of Cobre descent; of which Lewis is one -- it was difficult to argue with Lewis' leadership of the team. When it later emerged that she had endorsed the team decision to protest as one during World Cup qualifying, many of her critics were oddly silent. Others lionised her, pointing out the strength of her character. While she still resists comparison to her father, there are more than a few tell-tale signs that Jermain had a great influence on his daughter. Her tendency to stand cross-armed, glaring at the pitch when her side is performing below expectation is straight from the Jermain Lewis school of management -- the advanced part; when he'd calmed down, of course -- as is her no-nonsense approach to her media obligations. However, her insistence on being called "head coach" rather than manager, and borderline excessive delegation of responsibility to her staff and team leadership (mostly to captain Daniele Gentile and his second-in-command Luther Bailey) are as ideologically opposed to her father as possible. When asked, Serenity responded rather cryptically, stating "[she is] the rudder, not the engine" and that she could only "point them in the right direction". This relatively hands-off management, sorry coaching style is something of a cross between that of Amandeep Sahota -- who managed the Osarius side she captained -- and her mentor at the national academy, Alain Montblanc.

Assistant Head Coach: Jordan Simpson
The one-time most expensive Osarian footballer was a fearless utility man in his playing days, known for his "crazy" streak. He has mellowed significantly in his old age, after coaching under great coaches such as Benedict Watson, Jermain Lewis and Ruben Contreras. Simpson's quietly thoughtful approach is said to mirror that of Azarai Robinson in many ways, and his insightful comments have already proven invaluable to Serenity Lewis. While not the dynamic figure he was in his younger days, Simpson still possesses a fighting spirit that belies his age, and will happily "get stuck in" with the team during training -- as best he can, anyway -- which endears him to the squad, particularly the younger players. Those old enough to remember his time at Hastmead Diamante -- even the ones who support rival teams -- do seem a little reluctant to challenge him, perhaps remembering his ferocity as a player. Not that this works out badly for him, of course. Having operated as a joint session-leader with Serenity Lewis under Robinson, Simpson has a great dynamic with his new "boss", and the two share a relationship that in many ways mirrors that of Jermain Lewis and Georgina Carsley (it should be noted that Simpson was also known as a tough-tackling left back in his younger days) though the lower degree of intensity seems to be of benefit to the players.

Coaches: Angelica Capiello (Session Leader), Toby Drummond & Aaliyah Ferguson (Attacking), Brent Steele & Harvey Decker (Defending), Maryann Walsh & Roque Acosta (Technical)
Bringing in a newly retired player to act as a session leader ahead of established coaches such as Harvey Decker might be seen as a bit of a gamble from Lewis, but she is merely doing what she feels is best for the team. Her close friendship with Capiello, combined with the latter's keen tactical insight and game-reading ability as a player suggest that there will be no problems. Decker and Steele -- formerly players and coaches at Burningham and Turic respectively -- will lead defensive training for the team, with Lewis said to be disappointed not to find additional support in this area, earmarking relative defensive fragility as the squad's biggest weakness. That said, this is the only part of Lewis' chosen coaching team that has not been questioned. While none doubt the playing prowess of Toby Drummond, several question whether he is fully ready to coach at the highest level. Even larger questions are asked of Aaliyah Ferguson, who endured a disappointing injury-riddled career as a player and sought to earn her coaching badges early. That she has over a decade of experience coaching at Arcaea County is irrelevant to critics; Arcaea County have not been top flight for some time, after all. Similarly, despite the love for double World Cup winning captain Roque Acosta, some question the wisdom of having him involved in the backroom team so soon. His presence on the touchline at times during World Cup 72 was heavily criticised, and while he now has all the requisite badges and has had a noticeably positive effect on Firewood City Stars -- who he is rumoured to be taking charge of next season, following the departure of Miguel Rios -- there are legitimate concerns that this is "too much, too young" for the former Firewood favourite. His partner in technical training, Maryann Walsh, remains one of the single most underrated central midfield players ever produced by Osarius, and critics compare her to the likes of Dhanda, Barca-Carthy and Lewis herself, and come up wondering how she came to be in such illustrious company. Those in the know will tell you, though, that Walsh has quietly been a top-level coach for some time, working with the national academy, and several top flight clubs across Osarius.

Specialist Coaches: Ruby Fletcher & Gareth Mason (Goalkeeping), Gabriele Esposito (Strength & Fitness), Tobias Holt (Strength)
Ruby Fletcher is the fourth of Lewis' coaching staff to have recently retired, but much like all the others, there is no questioning her suitability to the role. The former Osarius international had already been in a player/coach role at Callisto City -- where she helped develop her understudy and eventual replacement Chelsea Byrne, into an international level goalkeeper of note -- and can draw on over twenty years experience. She will be working alongside another former Osarius international goalkeeper in Gareth Mason, who has extensive experience as a coach also, having taken a role at the Enzo Corradini Goalkeeping Academy. Gabriele Esposito and Tobias Holt are retained from the previous backroom staff in recognition of their longstanding relationship with the OFA and national team.

Medical Staff: Dr. Chanice Ash (Team Doctor), Dr. Clara Cormega (Physiotherapist), Dr. Cerys Francis (Psychologist)
There isn't really much to say about the medical staff that hasn't been said several times before. Given that Serenity Lewis has been a part of the same backroom staff as the trio for some time now, they have a strong working relationship and saw no reason to change it. Of note is that Lewis petitioned for additional medical support ahead of the AOCAF Cup in summer, but was knocked back due to the lack of certainty surrounding her future in the role. Dr. Ash is said to have welcomed the suggestion, implying that she may feel slightly overworked.
