Article posted on the GruenCric website.
Deisler's reign begins with disappointing submission

Gruenberg squandered a position of incredible strength, leading Liventia by 180 runs with 10 wickets in hand to go down to a 6 wicket defeat at the Bastion Cricket Ground in Dover, starting the new Test season off on a low note. Perennial foe Daniel Quinn, whose left arm spin has always somewhat belied the Gruenberger reputation as good players of the turning ball, was responsible for running through the Gruenberger second innings, reducing them from 149-0 to 249-7, and eventually 274 all out, while a captain's innings from Max Finney led from the front to chase down 310 for the loss of just four wickets. Finney, who shared a huge opening stand with Dylan Hennessey, brought calm to a game up till then played at a frenetic pace, and John Millbank, whose 85 accompanied his first innings hundred, took things to the line as Gruenberger spinners Lemonzesty Yowoax and Salajaff Qilairana failed to find the same purchase as Quinn.

It was a match that started with a bang, Gruenberg rocketing to 372 on the first day as debutant Qilairana smashed the fastest Test century in Gruenberger history. The experienced top order pair of Pitkin Deisler and Benny Enchante feasted on some fairly wayward offerings from Liventia's seamers, but both fell short of a hundred and at 221-5 Gruenberg faced wasting the opportunity to score heavily. In came Qilairana, who danced down to smite Quinn over his head early on, setting the tone for a daring - at times overly so, dropped twice attempting ambitious slogs - and thrilling innings. Inexperience began to tell as he failed to farm the strike with Gruenberg's tail, and he finally fell LBW - one of many in a match where uneven bounce was a major factor - to Adams for 104.

Fellow debutant Ke Ke started similarly strongly, getting Hennessey in his second over, but that brought Millbank to the crease. His lustrous hundred pulled Liventia back into contention, assisted by aggressive run-a-ball half centuries from James Quinn and Ollie Kerr. Qilairana was swiftly hit out of the attack and Yowoax failed to find any first innings spin, while Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Tellflikkilflarknon had a dreadful game, with wayward bowling and no contribution with the bat. But the dependable iiPriyuff Uglaxx was accurate as ever, using the bounce well and targeting the stumps against Liventia's long tail to sweep up yet another Test five-for for Gruenberg's all time leading wicket-taker.

A third debutant, Compoundinterest Hmnff, then took his chance to shine, at first jogging in Deisler's slip stream as the captain raced to another aggressive half century, then taking over once Deisler fell sweeping. He brought up a hundred with a languid push through the covers, but was LBW to Quinn shortly thereafter. Wickets tumbled, and a late resurgence from Kahunk Uvaevaluvae and Yowoax failed to stem the bleeding as Gruenberg set an eventual target of 305, far short of what they would have hoped. That hope further dwindled as Hennessey, Finney and Millbank guided their team calmly past 200, and was extinguished altogether when another debutant, Phillippe Bérenger, stepped up to smite the winning six.

Article posted on the GruenCric website.
Thriller fades into sizzler as Vantua, the Black Capraphage of Raininess, strikes again

A see-sawing Orean Test match saw Liventia and Gruenberg swapping chances to pull off an exciting victory, before fading into damp oblivion as the rains returned to wreck the climax and leave Gruenberg 38 runs short of their target with just 1 wicket left for Liventia to take. The drawn Test assures Liventia cannot be beaten in the series and piles on the pressure for Gruenberg to win the final Test and avoid a defeat, but the hosts will have been bitterly disappointed not to have put the series away with a win at Orean.

James Quinn, John Millbank and Ollie Kerr continued their strong form with the bat for Liventia. Quinn (108) and Kerr (80) put them in a strong position on day 1, scoring at more than 4 an over. There was also a maiden half century for youngster Philippe Bérenger, while Sean Finney frustrated Pitkin Deisler further, scoring an unbeaten 50 as part of an 80 run final wicket stand that stretched the score past 400. In response, Compoundinterest Hmnff flapped hopelessly against a sharp Matt Geach short ball to produce a simple catch on his first delivery. Ruttup Izaizakanorb silenced his doubters with an accomplished century at 3, and Ettexinor Broimbles's 59 was his first international score of note, but Gruenberg were bowled out some 52 runs short on first innings, Geach taking 3-54.

Needing to set a target, Liventia struck a curiously measured tone in their second innings, but there was little to criticize in John Millbank's majestic 171, his second century of the series. More culpable were the first innings stars, Bérenger and Kerr, whose plodding strike rates held up Max Finney's declaration. Rain also began to interfere as Vantua's sinister non-goat-enabled footfalls began to be heard around the ground; the declaration finally came to set a target of 375, generous on a generally good batting surface, with a little more than a day to play. Jonathan Adams's spicy opening spell soon all but wrote off any chance of the runs being chased down.

On day 5, Azzawozzawoowizzbitz Telliflikkiflarknon, under pressure after poor performances with bat and ball to date, finally struck a half century, but his aggressive style wasn't suited to blocking out for a draw and he swept Daniel Quinn straight to Bérenger on the midwicket boundary. That left the increasingly impressive Salajaff Qilairana as the only recognized batsman: averaging almost 80 in Test cricket in his young career, he carried on his good form with a daring 87 before taking on a risky single to substitute Duncan Lewis, who had been dropped for the highly promising spinner Francis Kennedy. Lewis threw down the stumps, but Gruenberg's tail managed to block out until the rains came once more.

Drawn

It was a dominant performance from the Barunian batsmen in the first test against Tobiasia, with the first 5 batsmen all posting half-centuries in the first innings. Christian Long and Jon Doveson opened the batting and set about frustrating the Tobiasian bowlers, moving the score past 100 before Long was trapped in front. Long then batted through with Price, who showed he is capable of more than just T20 slogging with a well-paced 50 to see out the first day. The pair pushed the score beyond 200 on day 2, before Doveson departed, courtesy of a sharp return catch from the Tobiasian spinner. Price was joined by Gilhaus, who set about adding his own half-century while Price posted a well-deserved test hundred down the other end. Gilhaus then edged behind, the third wicket to fall with the team at a notable 333. Simon Bailey then came to the crease and built another great partnership to see out the end of day 2. Day 3 started with some luck for Tobiasia, finally taking the wicket of Price, caught in the deep after making an excellent 173. Having been on 87 overnight, Bailey set about getting his hundred, which he brought up with a boundary to trigger a declaration from Doveson.

Price then added a 2nd century in the 2nd innings, making 112 not out as Barunia set a total of 250 for just 3 lost, with Long chipping in with 61. Doveson fell cheaply for 19, while Chris Gilhaus fell just short of another half-century, making 48. The loss of his wicket saw Doveson end the innings in an attempt to finish off the Tobiasian batsmen, but there simply was not enough time, especially as a late shower meant that the 5th day ended early, the Barunians able to only get 15 overs at the Tobiasian batsmen before the umpires called it quits.

Following the 1–1 home series draw against Gruenberg, Liventia's CBA have announced the following 16-man squad to tour Wray. Garland Goudreau joins the squad as main wicketkeeper; Max Finney will play solely as a batsman (and as reserve wicky) in this series. James Quinn – holder of the Liventian Test record score of 287*, also against Wray, is expected to open alongside Finney, with Dylan Hennessey dropping further down the batting order. There is also a surprise recall for 31-year-old all-rounder Leo Cartwright, although he is expected to be a backup option.

Line-up for 1st Test vs Liventia
TM Parker Bayside Oval

1. TJP Sutcliffe
2. JWO Colt
3. SLM Sterne*
4. GPRJ Mitchell
5. JGN Jackson
6. JMA Keillher
7. JS Stacey +
8. MJP Perry
9. JS Storm
10. BR Matthews
11. SG Aguando

TM Parker Bayside Stadium, for Liventia's information, is a spinner's wicket, crumbling early and proving unpredictable throughout the tail end of the test match. Batting is tough - though talented players will find ways to deal with the significant spin and variable bounce and discover that the pitch will provide plenty of opportunities for run-scoring. Owing to its location on a promontory jutting out into the Hollander Sea, and the open design of the stadium, means that field temperatures can be remarkably chilly - often dipping as low as 10 degrees celsius, especially now in early summer.

Massive apologies for missing my last scorination slot and thanks a lot to Liventia for stepping in. I had a few personal problems the same day and, if I'm honest, completely forgot to do it. It's all alright now though, so I'll try and knock up an RP in the very near future.

Sutcliffe, Aguando secure vintage win over Liventia

Blue-chip performances from Shane Aguando and debutant Tom Sutcliffe secured a 6-wicket victory for Wray over old nemesis Liventia on Day 5 of the 1st Test at the TM Parker Bayside Stadium in Nelson's Bay. After skittling Liventia on the afternoon of Day 1, Wray took control through centuries from Tom Sutcliffe and Jamie Jackson, and 50s from Simon Sterne, Glenn Mitchell and Jason Keillher. Liventia fought their best to stay in the game with dynamic and gallant performances James Quinn and Dylan Hennessey, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Green Caps from chasing down the 101-run target to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

The two captains were presented with a classic Nelson's Bay scene when they arrived at the TM Parker Bayside Stadium on the opening day of perhaps the most anticipated test series of Wray's history: it was grey, with a threat of rain, cold and windy. The pitch was tacky and starched and look conducive to spin. Simon Sterne announced he made just one alteration to the side which thrashed Eastfield Lodge in their last test: Ed McCaughey, reluctantly, was dropped in favour of debutant Tom Sutcliffe. There was much excitement around the 20 year Central Districts batsman, who has been tipped as one of the best young talents to emerge from Wray in recent memory. He received warm applause when he was given his cap by coach Shepard, as the 23,000 capacity crowd began to filter into the ground. There was, of course, the usual bite in the crowd which came with every Wray-Liventia fixture - several posters in the crowd read along the lines of 'Wray rules, OK' and 'You're Finney-shed!', a play on the name of Liventia's stoic captain, Max Finney, who had tormented Wray in the past with his astute batting and run-scoring prowess. Warming up next to the Shore Stand, Liventia were greeted with a handful of cheeky remarks from some of the more exuberant members of the green-and-white fanbase, but nothing devolving into insulting or demeaning.

Sterne and Finney tossed up, and the home captain called correctly, electing to field, stating that overhead and field conditions were too good to resist a crack at Liventia first up. This was generally considered a smart idea, and was popular amongst the fans - memories were rekindled of two seasons ago when Jackson Storm had torn into the Liventian batting order and razed it for 101 all out in Orean. It was Storm again who was handed the new ball, three slips in place, and immediately he was greeted by prodigious swing and good carry to Stacey behind the stumps as James Quinn left the first delivery. Quinn got off the mark rather streakily, pushing hard at an outswinging delivery, and the ball took the edge and ran for four past a diving Jackson Colt at third slip. Blake Matthews started from the other hand, pushing the ball fuller to try and extract the early-morning movement, but his lines were a bit off early on, and Quinn got his first proper shot in, flaying the left-armer through extra-cover for a sumptuous boundary. He was awry in his first spell, and was taken out of the attack for Jason Keillher, and with immediate results. Keillher sent down an 88mph short-ball, which hurried Quinn into a rash pull shot. Jonathan Perry was stationed virtually perfectly for the shot, and he caught it with ease. Wray had their first breakthrough - with Keillher suitably pumped - with just 25 runs on the board.

If it was a good start for Wray, it was to get better very shortly. Shane Aguando was brought into the attack in the 10th over, and he too struck immediately, when Philippe Bérenger, the 21 year old steered a delivery which spun more than expected straight into the hands of Perry, again, at leg slip. The crowd, already loud, exploded into raucous cheers as Aguando was engulfed by his team-mates. Liventia were in trouble at 26/2, and Wray were scenting blood. Aguando was bowling the best he'd ever done, extracting variable bounce and lively turn from the first-day surface, causing Liventia's batsmen all sorts of trouble. He thought he had Dylan Hennessey pinned LBW, even convincing Sterne to opt for a review at the beginning of the 12th over, but the EagleEye system confirmed the umpire's suspicion, that it was snaking down leg. He didn't, however, have to wait long for his next breakthrough. Three balls later, and after being dispatched for a pulled four through square-leg, Aguando tossed up a delivery slower outside off-stump, and Finney, eager to impose himself, came down the wicket. He was beaten in the flight, and tried to reign his stroke in, but instead it was an awkward little push back to the bowler, who gathered the ball easily to his left. Aguando fell to the turf and hurled the ball into the air as once again he was swarmed - the 27 with the magic arm was doing it again, two wickets in two overs to leave Liventia reeling at 39/3. Aguando was on a roll, completley foxing all-rounder Ollie Kerr for the entire of the 15th over, getting the No. 5 to play-and-miss at two successive googlies, before breaking out the straighter delivery, which Kerr meekly poked at, and the edge was pouched by Jackson Colt at 2nd slip. A mixture of conditions and supreme bowling from Aguando was making life very difficult for Liventia's batsmen, as they continued to falter at 47/4.

Jackson Storm came back on for Jason Keillher, and saw the first ball of his new spell whizz past the outside edge of Dylan Hennessey. Second ball, the experienced left-hander punched Storm through cover-point for a smooth boundary. But Storm was never one to miss out on a wicket-fest, as he cranked it up to Hennessey, who could do little more than direct the 93mph good-length delivery onto the base of his middle-stump. Storm was visibly pumped up, roaring his approval before jumping and punching the air. 47/5. Garland Goudreau and Duncan Lewis stemmed the bleeding for seven overs, before Lewis was coaxed into pressing forward to an Aguando googly, which nicked the edge and flew to Colt at second slip. Lunch was taken with Liventia shattered at 72/6. Goudreau, the keeper, had put up some resistance, earning a pair of boundaries off Matthews and Aguando, but he had not received support from the rest of the line-up.

Shortly after lunch, Aguando claimed his fifth wicket of the day, and Wray's seventh - he threw out a big-spinner chinaman delivery outside off-stump, and Matt Geach played inside it, but the ball spun sharply to clip the top of off-stump. Aguando had taken his five-wicket haul for just 25 runs. Daniel Quinn marred his figures somewhat, cracking away a monstrous slog-sweep for six, followed by a bunted four through midwicket, but he would become Aguando's sixth victim as he tried to force it away through point, but instead got a feathered edge which was gathered well by Stacey.

Jason Keillher returned to mop up the tail, having Sean Finney caught behind for 9, before sending down a 91.6mph ball on middle stump which Jonathan Adams backed away from and tried to swing away, only to see his stumps rearranged. Liventia had fallen to 109 all out, Shane Aguando taking 6/49. The spinner walked off the TM pitch to rapturous applause from an already suitably inebriated Nelson's Bay crowd. Brief words were exchanged between Keillher, Jackson and the departing Liventian batsmen, but the umpires stepped in and the situation was diffused.

Nothing now remains of Wray's first ever opening partnership - Mark Hudson and Ed McCaughey - with the turgid right-hand being finally dispatched after prolonged mediocre form, and replaced in the line-up by the effusively talented Tom Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe, in reality, was more of a middle-order batsman - he bats four for Central Districts, and has been pigeonholed as a future number 3 to replace Simon Sterne, but he would make his first appearance with a green cap as an opener, facing up to the swing of Jonathan Adams midway through the afternoon session.

If you could plan your first ball in international cricket, you probably wouldn't do it like Sutcliffe did. It was a relatively innocuous delivery, 86mph, shaping away from the right-hander, but he thrust his bat nervously and the ball nicked the edge low. It didn't carry to 2nd slip, instead bouncing a foot short, and Sutcliffe gave a sheepish smile to his opening partner Colt. It would be a valuable reprieve for Sutcliffe and Wray, as the 20-year old immediately began to look at ease at the crease. In the third over, he crunched a drive through extra-cover off Adams, and the next over, he whipped an inswinging yorker off his toes for four from Matt Geach, demonstrating exceptional timing.

At the other end, Jackson Colt would take on the mantle as the senior opener, and had the chance to silence the questions over Wray's opening partnership, but his was a confused innings, taking a tortuous 46 balls for four lone runs before he edged tamely to Matt Geach at third slip off Sean Finney. Simon Sterne survived a scare early in his innings, when on 7, he was surprised by a lifter from Geach and fended at it - the ball spooned up off the glove and narrowly evaded the grasp of Hennessey at second slip. Liventia would regret those early near-misses as Sutcliffe and Sterne would navigate the evening session to lead Wray to 103-1 at the close, Sutcliffe bringing up his maiden test match fifty which a steered two behind point in the penultimate over. Wray had virtually eliminated Liventia's meagre lead by the close of play, and were looking to establish their hold over the game.

The morning greeted Wray with sunshine and much more positive batting conditions. Sutcliffe took immediate advantage, swivelling to crack a pull through square leg off Matt Geach, before coming down the field and chipping over mid-on off Daniel Quinn for a boundary. Sutcliffe demonstrated immense dexterity and precision with the bat, which brought to mind memories of a young Simon Sterne. In examining his technique, pundits were always quick to point the technical purity of his style, a hundred individual moving parts all moving in unison to produce sublime cricketing strokes. He rattled through the 60s, 70s, 80s crossing into the 90s with a thrashed cut through backward point off Ollie Kerr. Sterne passed his own 50, at a much more sedate pace, but again looking in imperious touch. Sutcliffe went to his inaugural test match hundred - presumably the first of many, with another classy punch down the ground to four. Telling photos were published in the papers the following morning, with Sutcliffe standing with arms aloft, drenched in sunlight, with Simon Sterne stood meekly in the background. Sutcliffe had dominated the partnership, accounting for 116 runs of the 170 in total - Sterne had sat back and allowed his protege to take centre stage.

Sutcliffe was eventually dismissed shortly after lunch, for 141, a fantastic diving catch at cover from Beranger as he drove perhaps the first loose shot of his innings. He left the pitch to another bout of huge applause. Had we just witnessed the birth of a legend? And if Liventia were hoping for any respite, Glenn Mitchell came to the crease and batted with purpose again, adding 77 with Sterne before the captain was dismissed 2 runs short of an 8th test century, pinned in front by the laborious Jonathan Adams.

Wray's other golden boy, Jamie Jackson, who'd scored a century in the last test against Eastfield Lodge, looked in equally good touch, dishing out some punishment to Adams and Geach. The evening session saw Jackson motor past fifty, whilst Mitchell was dismissed for 66, given out on review after an Adams delivery hurried him. The umpire had adjudged it to be bat-then-pad, but Liventia thought otherwise, and indeed, the decision was overturned. Day 2 ended with Wray cruising on 376/4.

Day 3 was yet again dominated by Wray's batsman, Jackson converting another promising start into a big-time century, whilst Jason Keillher batted with composure for a nice fifty, with a modest two boundaries. Liventia saw excitement very early in the day, as Ollie Kerr shot one past Keillher's outside edge, and were adamant he had edged it. They reviewed the decision, but the umpires decision stood, despite potential sound being picked up by Edg-O. Liventia were disgruntled, but they received no let up as Jackson and Keillher methodically added up runs. Jackson passed 100 with a single through midwicket, and cut loose afterwards, slamming Daniel Quinn way back over mid-on for six, and taking slog-sweeping the leg-spin of Duncan Lewis deep away into the stands at midwicket. Wray eventually declared shortly after lunch, when Jason Keillher pressed a ball wide of mid-on for a single to bring up his 14th test match fifty - the same number as Ed McCaughey - with Wray's total on 514/4, leading by a gargantuan 405 runs.

Liventia decided that stoic defence would get them no where, not with Aguando spinning it square, and Quinn and Finney came out firing, regularly using their feet against the quicker bowlers. They succeeded in throwing Blake Matthews off his length, and the young left-armer took a good deal of tap, walloped for 17 runs in his 6th over. He was quickly pulled from the attack, but even Aguando could do little to stem the tide. Finney reverse-swept the spinner twice in an over, once for four and the other for a couple - the unorthodox approach from Liventia's openers sent Sterne and co. scrambling for solutions in the field. The field was pushed back to stop the boundaries, and Liventia took advantage by milking singles. They had the hundred up in 18 overs, and were pressing on to 150 when Wray finally struck, to the audible relief of the crowd. Aguando fired in a quicker one, flat on Finney's legs, but he went for the premeditated sweep anyway. The delivery beat the shot and rapped him low in front, and the umpire gave him out. Such was Liventia's momentum, that Finney spent a review, but it was confirmed to be clipping leg-stump, and he was on his way. James Quinn continued to dash away - he bunted Jason Keillher back over his head for a one-bounce for and thrashed Jonathan Perry through midwicket as soon as he dropped short. Philippe Beranger was the new batsman, but he couldn't take advantage of the situation, hitting the sole boundary before Blake Matthews was brought back in, and despite being hit for consecutive boundaries by Quinn, managed to slip a yorker under the 21-year old's bat and knock out his leg-stump.

Quinn was joined at the crease by Dylan Hennessey, and the two continued Liventia's rampage. Striking at a very healthy 80.00, Quinn passed one hundred, allowing Liventia to cruise past 200 and into the 250s. At 50 overs, Liventia had recorded an epic 273 runs, a decent score in a limited overs fixture, rattling along at almost 5 and a half an over. Quinn departed the ball after drinks, going for a bombastic cut through the off-side, which he only managed to top-edge through to Stacey behind the stumps, who took the catch tumbling backwards. Ollie Kerr joined Hennessey at the crease and put on 127 runs in 20 overs, all of Wray's bowlers taking an equal amount of damage. Sterne had thrown the field backwards, with four men on the rope and no slips. Ollie Kerr rattled to a 50 ball 48, with five boundaries, before he shovelled a full delivery from Keillher straight into the hands of Sterne at midwicket. Garland Goudreau came in and gave up any pretences of reserve, slogging Shane Aguando first ball for four, before pulling Keillher to backward square. Aguando would have his revenge shortly though, as he tossed a ball up a bit higher to Goudreau, who eagerly rushed down the wicket and drove the spinner high into the air, when it dropped into the hands of Jamie Jackson at long-on.

Duncan Lewis was the next man in, and he'd clearly been listening to Goudreau, as he opted to unfurl a sizeable slog-sweep against Aguando first ball. It struck many as a slightly odd decision - Liventia had managed to scrape out a lead, of 40 runs, and some application by the lower order could have put some pressure on Wray. But instead, he swung blindly, missed the ball completely and saw it crash into his middle stump.

Shane Aguando had taken a test hat-trick before, and he became the first Wray bowler to take two. And it came from an absolute jaffer. It was a googly, with plenty of flight, drifting in on leg-stump before ripping sharply to off-stump. Matt Geach played firmly down the initial line, but didn't account for the severe turn, so the ball clipped the edge and was scooped low by Colt at slip. The crowd had been stoked back into life, but was quickly subdued by a powerful counter-attack by Hennessey - he battered boundaries all round the park in a 5 over spell which brought him 58 runs and helped him pass 150. Daniel Quinn used his feet against Jonathan Perry, dispatching him twice in two balls over deep-midwicket for six, before he found deep-square attempting the same shot. Hennessey continued to rampage, with technique now largely out of the window, but instead just swinging and hoping. It took him close to 200 - getting to 191 through a blatant outside edge off Storm to 3rd man. Sean Finney was dismissed, trapped by Storm and opting to review, more out of hope than judgement. The review system upheld the umpires decision and they were one away. They couldn't prevent Hennessey from reaching his double hundred, crunching another effortless four on the up through extra-cover to bring up 200.

Storm wrapped up the innings just after lunch on day 5, sending a delivery straight through the meagre defence of Jonathan Adams, leaving Hennessey high and dry on 213*. It was a scintillating knock, which went from strength to strength, and he was rightly applauded off by the somewhat unruly crowd, who had been expecting a comfortable innings victory. But Wray were still firmly in the driving seat - the last three days had demonstrated the demons of the first innings were more of Liventia's making. But they couldn't relax straight away, as early in their chase of 100 they lost two quick wickets: first Jackson Colt was caught LBW by a ball which deviated sharply from Jonathan Adams, and then Simon Sterne was dismissed off the same bowler through a sensational catch at short-leg by the sub Millbank.

Wray lost two more in their pursuit, Sutcliffe made 37 before he picked out deep-midwicket trying to smash Daniel Quinn out of the ground, whilst Jackson was strangled down the leg-side off Quinn, with Goudreau taking an excellent catch down low to his left. But the chase wasn't ever in doubt, really - Glenn Mitchell and Jason Keillher calmly chalked off the last remaining runs to record a 6-wicket win, and to go 1-0 up in the 4 match series.

(OOC: This is for the 2nd test. 3rd test RP to come)

Second Test against Tobiasia

Zane Adams has led Barunia to victory in the second test against Tobiasia, within first 5-wicket haul in test cricket. On a pitch that provided a good amount of turn, the Barunian leg-spinner finished with the incredible figures of 6-20 in the second innings, as Tobiasia collapsed to 154 all out, falling short of the Barunian total by an innings and 73 runs. Earlier, Ben Price and Christian Long both made centuries as they built a 307-run partnership for the 1st wicket. Jon Doveson, moved down the order, also chipped in with a useful 63, before Simon Bailey hit a quick-fire 118 not out to drive the score out to 561/4d.
If the Barunians had found the pitch easy to score on, it was a different story for their counterparts, with the Tobiasian top order torn to shreds in the first innings. Nick Jones did most of the damage with the new ball, while Taylor and McClelland also took wickets as the Tobiasians dropped to 103/4 at one stage. Only a resilient stand from the middle orders gave them a competitive total, but the introduction of spin into the attack proved fatal, as Adams took three wickets to restrict the Tobiasians to a score of 334.
Adams then had a chance to have a go at the Tobiasian top order, as Doveson elected to introduce spin early in the second innings. Adams fulfilled his captain's faith in him, decimating the top order and finishing the match with a total of 9 wickets. With this performance, Adams solidifies his position as the top spinner in this side, a fact that the previous holder of that title doesn't seem to mind. Once the nation's lead wicket-taker, Doveson was surprisingly absent from the attack for most of the test, preferring to utilise his other bowlers rather than nominate himself. While the captain did snare a wicket in each innings, he appears to be focusing more on his batting as he gets older. Unfortunately, Doveson's decision not to bowl himself is sure to give selectors a headache. Barunia have traditionally been very good at spin, but without Doveson, Adams is the only spinner in the Barunian squad.

NATIONAL CRICKETER/EXCLUSIVE
Max Finney ready to give up Liventia captaincy in shock move
Jonathan Wilkinson

It's a small room that Max Finney walks into in his hotel in Albion, Wray, as he prepares for one of the biggest interviews, perhaps, of his career.

For a five-star hotel, you'd certainly be forgiven for thinking they'd have something larger than a broom cupboard for an international sporting hero to sit down for a one-on-one chat in. But that's until you remember we're in Wray, and this "hero" captains Liventia in cricket – that is to say, for many Wrayian fans, he might as well be persona non grata in the country.

Finney is now 31, and has been playing international cricket for nine years, since Liventia's international debut. Cricket wasn't even a professional sport in the country then – the first side included 10 university students, including Finney. He's been the side's captain or vice-captain in at least one form of the game the entire time. A long time for someone so young to spend maturing as a cricketer in the spotlight.

"It hasn't been easy," Finney laughs unconvincingly. He's not joking, either. Aside with all the pressures of managing one of the top teams in world cricket out on the field, he's had to sort out issues away from playing too.

"Daniel, god love him," the affable wicketkeeper begins. He's referring to Daniel Quinn, one of his closest confidants on the team who caused a stir six years ago by publicly coming out as the first high-profile LGBT sports star in the country. "He'd told the team a few years prior to that. Never an issue, of course," Finney continues.

"But then those twats at the Enquirer decide it's somehow worthy of ruining a man's life by trying to splash it on their front page as some sort of 'scandal'. A scandal? Danny was tipped off about it and we had to do that whole press conference thing. I know he was embarrassed at the whole thing. It wasn't his fault though."

And then there was Brendon du Pont. The man who, without having played for either his birth country of Liventia or his adopted home of Wray, sparked the entire rivalry between the two countries that continues to this day.

"We called him [du Pont] up as a reserve for one of the Twenty20 tournaments, I recall. Really nice lad. Didn't deserve to be the centre of attention in the whole storm, really.

"But because back then I was a selector [editor's note: Finney was included in selection panel meetings as captain, but was never officially appointed a selector by the board], I started getting lots of angry letters from Wray. The board met and told the selectors to ignore all of it and pick who we wanted.

"Easier said than done. It didn't affect anyone else, they're all coaches in Liventia and has no bearing on them. I was going out there every day playing in front of these idiots. I took the brunt of it of course. You shrug it off, it makes me play better, but of course it gets to you sometimes."

Then Finney, who announced before the Wray series he would no longer keep wicket for Liventia as he seeks to prolong his Test career, drops the bombshell.

"When I spoke to the lads to say I wouldn't be keeping anymore I also told them I'm done with the captaincy.

"This Wray series is my last as captain. I could've quit before it of course, but no. There's too much pride at stake here. These lot [Wray fans] have given me so much grief in the last few years that I want to go out by winning an away series against them. That would be the icing on the cake."

Does he expect vice-captain Matt Geach to take over?

"No, I don't think Geachy will do it. He was T20 captain for a bit but I think he's happy being a vice-captain now. It's difficult for bowlers to captain in Tests too. It's time for one of the younger ones to step up."

But this is an ageing squad that has grown up together on the international stage to make Liventia one of world cricket's powerhouses. There simply aren't that many 'younger ones' around any more.

"I'd give it to Ollie (Kerr) or Henners [Dylan Hennessey], myself. They've both been around the side for ages and are capable of doing the job. But I think Henners wouldn't agree to do it."

Once he steps down after the Wray series, Finney will have presided over 24 Test series, having won at least 15 of those with four drawn and four lost. In Liventia's Test history, he's been almost ever-present: he's only missed one series, having captained in every other one.

"We've never lost a Test series to these lot," he says with a wink. He's right, too: in two series, Liventia have won one and drawn one. "I'm not going to let that change now. I want that 16th series win."
