Skeckoa City Daily Whig Standard: GROUPS DETERMINED FOR WBC

Postby Skeckoa » Sun Aug 21, 2016 9:18 pm

Eternal City, ILYESUM - AP - The WBC hosts Ilyesum and Frenline Delta held a draw to decide the group configuration for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The Esquequi National Selection was placed in Group 5 alongside hosts Ilyseum, #11 ranked Ethane, #1 Schiltzberg, Vangaziland, and #31 ranked Drawkland.

Pundits say that Skeckoa is smack-dab in the middle of the road in terms of prior success in the WBC tournament. Schiltzberg and Ethane top the top of most expert's predictions whileIlyesum and Vangaziland have never participated in any of the prior WBC's. People both inside Skeckoa and baseball experts outside of her borders have had doubts of whether or not Skeckoa's National Selection could achieve the record required in order to advance to the Round of 16.

"I'm not really worried of what experts say in regards to baseball" said Esquequi manager Geronimo Cruz, "We've been out here practicing and I am confident that my squad can go toe-to-toe with anyone on the planet."

Skeckoa has had a history of surprising experts when it comes to baseball whether it be for good or bad. The first two WBC tournaments where the Esquequis participated, they have been able to advance from the group stage. However, in their last appearance, they failed to advance even though they were the second-highest rank in their group.

With a largely new squad, there's no sure way to tell how this tournament will pan out for the Verdimorados.

Also released was the schedule of the Selection.

24 Aug @Schiltzberg
25 Aug v.Vangaziland
26 Aug @Ilyesum
27 Aug v.Ethane
28 Aug @Drawkland
30 Aug v.Schiltzberg

It was a black page in the history of the former nation of South Yerfilag. The National Party, recently ousted from power, had kept the Cincysians and Scantorians at bay for over ten years. Then, with the cry of "Apartheid!" on their lips, the Freedom Party made their juggernaut-like move for power, backed by the World Assembly. Led by Chairman Desmond Mobutu, a power-hungry Cincysian, the People's Freedom Army and their WA coalition forces reached Praetor's Point and forced President Armand van Dam to relinquish the presidency.
In the New South Yerfilagi Free Election, overseen by the WA, the chairman's brother, Milton Mobutu, won the presidency. In his inaugural address, he promised his fellow citizens a race-free utopia. Then, tragedy struck: an angry former National Party leader assassinated Mobutu while he was journeying to Chromatika to officially cheer on the South Yerfilag team in the 36th World Baseball Classic. Without a strong executive branch, the WA-backed government crumbled, and Nathan Inouye assumed the presidency by force, renaming the nation Zyarus, a Cincysian word for a strong shield. Under the Inouye dictatorship, a strong military was built up and used to oppress his subjects. Inouye's strong-arm rule caused several Rushmori nations to officially condemn the new Zyarian government.
With no force behind their condemning actions, however, Inouye turned on Zyarus' most-valued possession, its baseball team. Many of the players were arrested by the military and faced the firing squad after mock trials on trumped-up charges of treason. While many Zyarians resented the firing squads, Inouye's forces were much too strong for any organised resistance to form.
All was not lost, however. Some of the players and staff on the national baseball team were able to flee and train other Zyarian refugees to play the game. They travelled, with WA protection, to the World Baseball Classic, where they hope to play for the cause of their nation's liberation.

((OOC: And some players remain in hiding. Just because you see a player from WBC 36 missing here doesn't mean they were summarily executed, as you will soon see.))

The Confederate's walk into the 37th World Baseball Classic more confident than they did for the 36th edition
A great run at the Aeropag Summer Olympic Games qualifers saw the team qualify. They also fought through their pool to progress to the Quater-Finals.

The team had spent off season unifying as a team.

There first opponent will be Zyarus ranked 7th and the first team they had to beat. Winning the whole tournament was a dream. Their goal was to play well enough, pitch as if their lives depended on it and never miss an opportunity the Confederate's were in for some tough competition but they hoped to break the top 30.

Pro's: A great pitching line up. Tight outfield fielding.
Cons: Too much reliance on the DH , letting their nerves get to them where they swing for every ball.

Also among their groupings would be;
New Cape Land , Yuuzhan vong Empire and Britonisea all unranked.

And Consumar ranked which ranks 15th.

Base Corps (Third Time's a Charm???)

Postby Drawkland » Mon Aug 22, 2016 5:43 am

DRAWKLAND NATIONAL BASEBALL TEAM

Name: Base Corps
Colors: Black with Red trim
Denonym: Drawkian
3RD World Baseball Classic
Stadium: Hydrogen Cyanide Field, Drawk City
Capacity: 50,000
Image
Manager: Angus Lockie
Head Coach: Ronan Finn
Assistant Coaching Staff:
[AC] Giovanni Daly
[H] Wallace Nestor
[F] Pedro Dennadi
[P] Bryson Crispin

The Base Corps' home field has been designated as Hydrogen Cyanide Field, a ballpark housing a massive 50,000. It's nestled in the middle of Drawk City, near the Sports Quarter of the city around the Drawkland River. The field is regularly used by the Drawk City Scouts, but in the offseason it's used by the Base Corps and as a stage for events.
Drawk City being Drawkland's most massive, sprawling city of many millions, travel can get congested, but there are lots of options for travelers. For teams, buses can be used, and there are several charter/private bus companies who are welcoming visiting teams. Traveling by airship is the favorable option for those wanting to see a big slice of Drawkian culture, traveling in the city. The lower left corner of the photo seen above is actually a semi-large dock for boats, which teams can travel in if they feel like it.
Getting to the city also heralds several options. Drawk City has a space port for those from non-Sonnelian regions, and an airport for more "local" travels (say if a team went to a space port with cheaper rates and flew into Drawk City by plane). Travel by boat is possible, but it's all river travel, so the source port will have to be from somewhere else on the Drawkland River or on the coastlines.

Drawkland is quite a cultural and tourism-minded nation, so teams and fans will have much fun in the city before and after the games. A notable item is the very widespread usage of music. Not only can music be heard through the streets, but in all sports games, including baseball, pep bands are a common if not a necessary feature of every game. Playing during gameplay is accepted, so visiting teams may have to take this into account. When on the road, however, the Drawkian pep bands following the Base Corps is more polite and will only play between innings. Drum cadences are crowd favorites.

A quirk about the Drawkians is that they generally train players of the same position to achieve the same level of batting skill and technique. This way, they never have to alter the lineup, they simply sub in the new player in the same position. Therefore, the lineup is based on position and not names. If both the Starter and the Bench player of a position are out for the game, the available DH will fill both their lineup position and field position (DH's are trained for basic skill across the field in Drawkland).

The Drawkians follow a strict pitching rotation. The pitchers are listed here as Starter/Mid Relief/Set Up/Closer. Generally they will follow this order, unless the Starter or Mid Relief give high performance, in which case they will keep them in until the last inning (giving way to the closer), or even keep them in the whole game (if they're throwing a no-hitter or are close to a record). Each game has a different rotation, it goes in the below order. This works especially well this edition considering there are 3 games scorinated per matchday.

2) Foss/Donahue/Kirby/Jenkins
3) Renato/Sault/Arthurson/Roth

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my runscorers: Yes.
Choose my lineup: My lineup is as specified above. You may use that.
Follow my pitching rotation: Use the rotation of pitchers I've specified for the game.
Godmod scoring events: Yes.
RP injuries to my players: Yes, as long as it's not career-ending.
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes, as long as it's not career-ending.
Eject my players: Yes, only one per game and a duration of a game.
Godmod other events: As long as it doesn't destroy my nation or my organization, I'm fine with anything.
Use DH at home: Yes.
As far as permissions go, as long as it doesn't totally wreck me, I don't mind, and in fact, you don't even have to TG (unless you're starting some diplomatic drama or something). I like surprises.

After 2 extremely underwhelming showings the last 2 editions (the current all-time record is 13-39), they're looking to make a name for themselves ... or at least, live down the reputation from the last 2 years as the designated group punching bag. As the Drawkian year is long, the same squad from last edition is returning, hopefully to clear their names.

The New Jarwelian Baseball team landed this morning In Frenline Delpha for the World Baseball Classic. The players will all aim to at least make It past the first round In their first World Baseball Classic but with Elite Fielding and great pitching they just could make It all the way. The team Is filled with males and females with a female at each position. The best player on the team many have said will be Tony Aserton the ace who went 21-2 last year. The best female player many said without a doubt It was Mia Tyson who at 19 Is one of the youngest on the team. On the offense they aren't a real hard power team but the can surely hit the ball but If you are looking for home runs you might wan't to watch out for Samuel Houan, Alexander Wek, and Shima Wong.

Notes

The players on this team previously competed, in other sports (volleyball, field hockey, basketball and weightlifting), at the Games of the VIII Olympiad and at the (abandoned) third West Guiana Softball tournament. These are, however, their real names as the group now openly identifies themselves following their legalization as a political party within the West Sanctii electoral system.

Feminisvs Sanctvsterra has competed in international sports events before, winning several medals at the Games of the VIII Olympiad and competing in the 11th Handball World Cup. However, they have had their greatest success in the World Korfball Classic, where they have won 2 out of 4 WKCs, with a third place in their only other attempt. In World Cup 67, they almost qualified for the World Cup, despite having little to no experience in competitive soccer before they entered that World Cup, after the official Saintland National Team boycotted qualifying over the results of a host vote. Due to the circumstances under which members of the organization have lived, the Feministvs Sanctvsterra Baseball Team has remarkably high levels of team chemistry. They lived their lives on the run from the authorities for several years, so members of Feministvs Sanctvsterra are deeply loyal to one another and to their organization. This loyalty translates into team-oriented play, with an emphasis on pitching, defense and small ball. They previously participated in WBCs 29 and 30, with middling records in both tournaments. In WBC 34, they returned after a long absence and reached the Round of 16 where they were eliminated by the Bat Slaves of Gregoryisgodistan. In WBC 35, they would manage a third place finish, the best to that point for any Sanctii team in the WBC.

Feministvs Sanctvsterra is now part of the ruling coalition in West Saintland along with the pro-reform moderates of Futurum. Due to the political turmoil in Saintland, Feministvs Sanctvsterra has elected to leave this team unchanged, delaying the introduction of a mixed gender team for at least one more cycle.

Although the Feministvs Sanctsterra Baseball Team does not include any male players, the idea that Feministvs Sanctvsterra is all female is a common misconception. Around 10 percent of the group's membership is male, mostly comprised of brothers of the group's members.

The Serbian Empire's ballpark

Many baseball stadiums in Serbian lands are temporary, usually built in association football stadiums or even in one case, on a race track infield for auto racing. The stadium in question that would be used is built at NAVAK, a race track outside of the village of Subotiste. The capacity is quite small, but the big thing is access to grass. ABANHFLEFT REVOLUTION
Abanhfleft men's national baseball team

Hope springs eternal, as the quote says. At least, that was what people said before the latest humiliation of the Abanhfleft national baseball team at the hands of some dark horse team named Coconut Isle or something like that. Now, a great deal of change has happened to the Abanhfleft Revolution, mostly because a terrorist attack has killed some members of the national team and left some more unable to play baseball anymore. This is basically a new team about to step up to the plate, and whether they're going to be more successful than the old team still remains to be seen...

Name of nation: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic

LLAMANEAN WBC37 ROSTER

Things aren’t going so well for Alex Cameron. After a strong semifinal finish at his first Classic at the helm, the team was somehow upset by the underdog Great Pond in the Round of Sixteen four years later. And although they muscled past hosts Chromatika the next Classic, a five-game series defeat to old rivals Nova Anglicana had to have stung for the administration, who had once seen their team won three Classics in a sixteen-year period.

Although he’s been given a two-year extension to cover this Classic, a poor performance could cost the popular ex-Ruby Falls manager his job. Can the Tigers, led by a number of new faces, deliver?

JERSEYS! "Home" "Away"

The Tigers continue to use the popular blue-and-gold jerseys as their default style. The newest addition features three-colored trim and changed numbering. They’ll likely wear the home jersey the majority of the time in the knockout stages, if they make it.

At WBC34, the rarely-used away jerseys were green-and-white. Attempting to make more of a statement when the team actually wore the alternates, the new aways are designed to make a statement, with light blue lettering on a black shirt and sharp orange-white trim. This remains the official alternate uniform for WBC36.

INFIELDERS
Sofia RASMUSSEN, #05, 25, C, R/R
2024 season: .365/.420/.523, 20 HR, 77 RBI, 5 SB
Blair EVERETT, #45, 30, DH-OF-1B, R/R
2024 season: .253/.339/.500, 31 HR, 100 RBI, 0 SB
Hector RINALDI, #13, 20, MIF-CF, R/R
2024 season: .275/.343/.407, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 19 SB
Stefan DANILO, #07, 32, SS-3B, S/R
2024 season: .325/.380/.499, 24 HR, 75 RBI, 10 SB
James HAO, #11, 22, 3B, S/R
2024 season: .353/.390/.429, 1 HR, 30 RBI, 26 SB

Sofia Rasmussen, one of the team’s leaders, took the nation by storm the year she was drafted, immediately earning a call-up to the majors and hitting over .400 in her first month. She’s still defensively brilliant and an expert contact hitter who has grown into a bit of power. Should be one of the team’s stars. Everett, known for her intensive usage of video, is a one-dimensional power hitter who should be competent at first base. Hector Rinaldi, brother of Kyirnson midfielder Stefan, only played sixty games last season after spending the other ninety-six a hotly-coveted prospect in the highest level of the minors, but still managed to make a huge impact - if he’d played the whole season while stealing bases at the rate he did, he would have nearly stolen fifty bases. At shortstop his arm means he’s just okay, but at second-base he’s one of the best in the world. Stefan Danilo, a mainstay of the team, has doubles power to all fields, and, although his speed is waning, once led the league in triples. Should be okay at shortstop, if not spectacular. James Hao is exceptionally fast and a strong defender - he’s a bit of a slap-hitter though, and wilts against high heat, although he’s very good at recognizing offspeed pitches.

Defensively, this setup could use some work (it’d be improved by throwing in Polanco and Fiers for Everett and Danilo), but offensively, it should be extremely dangerous, with a potent mix of speed and power, and three hitters with an average above .325.

Neil TRABAJEN, #59, 18, C, R/R
2024 season: .279/.325/.388, 6 HR, 45 RBI, 3 SB
Maddie POLANCO, #23, 32, 1B, L/L
2024 season: .297/.425/.483, 19 HR, 72 RBI, 17 SB
Xander FIERS, #09, 31, SS, R/R
2024 season: .299/.350/.428, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 26 SB
Marcus WRIGHT, #24, 20, UTIL, S/R
2024 season, .287/.354/.437, 14 HR, 67 RBI, 12 SB
Adam DONALD, #33, 25, UTIL, L/R
2024 season: .312/.378/.475, 15 HR, 72 RBI, 10 SB

The reserve corps are strong as well, although Cameron’s decision to only take two catchers could backfire. It’ll likely mean that Trabajen, son of Michael Trabajen, former starting catcher, will get little playing time. Maddie Polanco and Xander Fiers are both veterans whose skills have somewhat deteriorated - still, their defensive prowess means they’re likely to get some playing time. Meanwhile, the versatile Marcus Wright, collegiate player of the year at shortstop, will get a chance to shine in a more varied role, while Zobrist-esque Adam Donald finally makes a long-awaited debut to a team that loves versatility.

OUTFIELDERS

Tanya ERICSSON, #26, 29, L/CF, R/R
2024 season: .278/.325/.527, 38 HR, 127 RBI, 26 SB
Gudjon FRANDSEN, #28, 18, OF, R/R
2024 season: .296/.340/.398, 9 HR, 52 RBI, 45 SB
Owen DUFFY, #35, 33, C/RF, L/R
2024 season: .253/.350/.427, 15 HR, 67 RBI, 13 SB

Owen Duffy has been a mainstay of the “New Era” since its beginning, known for his spectacular defense in right field defined by strong instincts and a cannon for a right arm. At the plate, he’s passable - will hit doubles the other way, but not much else, making him easily shifted. Gudjon Frandsen, one of two exciting new outfield talents, is exceptionally quick, which translates to base-stealing mastery and very good range. He’s still unpolished, though, making as many errors as he does spectacular catches, and having been caught stealing thirteen times last season. In left field, Tanya Ericsson has always been a scrappy player despite her statline and paycheck - a childhood playing on the streets in southern Super-Llamaland has hardened her into a fierce competitor. Also, she’s one of the best hitters on this team, which certainly helps.

Lucien RUSSO, #32, 19, OF, S/R
2024 season: .254/.310/.411, 16 HR, 65 RBI, 29 SB
Tobias WAGNER, #30, 36, COF/1B/DH, R/R
2024 season: .236/.350/.502, 33 HR, 74 RBI, 8 SB

Lucien Russo is the other young outfield talent brought on. While he does have issues making contact and translating his raw power into game power, he’s still a good base-stealer and defender, and there’s a lot of potential (both physically and emotionally). Tobias Wagner, though, could be the end result - although he briefly played for the national team, his high strikeout tallies and inability to properly harness his speed hurt him in his prime, although he’s cleared everything up now and seems injury-free for the first time in a year.

PITCHERS
note: the Tigers will experiment with starting rotations, likely playing all five for the first fifteen matches, but switch to a four-person rotation (possibly demoting Burr to long relief) after the halfway point of the group stage.

Justin ZHENG, #13, 27, R
2024 season: 20-6, 2.29 ERA, 241 IP, 229 K/57 BB
Zheng is both a fireballer and a dedicated student of the game. A former reliever who has now led the league in innings pitched for three of the past five seasons, he throws a mid-nineties fastball with movement and complements it with a number of decent breaking pitches - curveball, changeup - as well as his legendary slicing 93-mph shuuto, dubbed longdexuanzhuan by fans of his hometown Nandaozhou Sharks.

Angeline ROMERO, #40, 29, L
2024 season: 13-2, 2.07 ERA, 118 IP, 101 K/27 BB
A five-pitch pitcher with three dominant offerings and impeccable command who goes for pitch efficiency over brute force. Her fastball isn’t that good, flat and topping out at ninety. Her cutter and splitter, both mid-80s, though, will ensure a parade of whiffs and weak contact with their vicious late movement.

Brittany WICTORSSON, #28, 25, R
2024 season: 18-10, 3.08 ERA, 198 IP, 180 K/65 BB

Not your usual sinkerballer - Wictorsson throws two sinkers - the first is a fairly typical offering that can induce ground-balls, the second...not so much. Wictorsson’s second sinker, which looks nearly identical to her first, tends to move sharply downwards and slightly inwards (to same-handed hitters). She also features a decent changeup, which is used mostly to mix things up and keep hitters guessing, and throws her pitches in the low-nineties.

Jason LOVE, #46, 23, R
2024 season: 12-6, 3.25 ERA, 102 IP, 154 K/35 BB

Usually, players who spent three years in the minor leagues and then only threw 100 decent innings their first season don’t get called onto the national team. But then again, these players tend not to also strike out 1.5 batters per inning. Love’s pitches, objectively, aren’t particularly strong, although he has a decent arsenal of low-nineties fastball, two-seamer, curveball, changeup. Instead, the pitcher is just deceptive, with late-breaking pitches and similar arm slots, and his pitches are different enough to make it work at a domestic level.

Jacob BURR, #47, 25, L
2024 season: 17-8, 2.96 ERA, 175 IP, 182 K/63 BB

Burr has managed to establish himself as one of the leading lights of City of Dinschria’s rotation in a short period of time. While most would point to his tall frame, muscular physique, and mid-to-high-nineties fastball as causes for this, he would point to his seemingly-unimpressive curveball. The combination of a 11-to-3 curve and the fastball, which has a lot of spin, has managed to fool hitters effectively, and he backs the combination up with a decent enough sinker.

A note: these are their recommended roles, but most of these are elite Llamanean relievers and can fill other roles pretty well. In the Llamanean baseball leagues, roles tend to be flexible. The closer usually isn't the best pitcher - that'd be the fireman. Think Dellin Betances or 2014 Wade Davis - not the closer, but better than them. Specialty pitches are marked with an asterisk. The Middle Long reliever will usually be relied on in 5+ out situations (e.g. a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning or something).

Long: Jordan MARTEL, #57, 26, R - fastball, cutter, changeup
LOOGY: Brad CARSTEN, #56, 29, L - two-seam fastball*, slurve
Middle Long: Michael JI, #54, 32, R - fastball, slider, curveball
Middle: Jason ERICSSON, #39, 25, R - fastball, curve
Middle: Henrik LONG, #48, 27, L - fastball, cutter*
Middle: Hanna VALENTIN, #43, 31, L - two-seam fastball*, slurve
Middle: Adam LI, #29, 34, R - fastball, curveball*
Closer: Han RHODERICK, #58, 36, R - fastball, slider******
Fireman: Troy VASQUEZ, #50, 33, R - fastball, shuuto***, cutter***, changeup

Yes, Alex Cameron, Tigers superstar throughout six-classics and all-time home runs leader, is the manager. After his playing days ended, retiring after the Tigers' championship run to WBC 28, he took to managing quickly. Moving quickly up the minor-league ladder, he soon secured jobs at Ruby Falls, and after guiding the team to decency when they only deserved mediocrity, was fired after a disastrous start to his seventh season, the team going 13-29 to start things off on the wrong foot. After that, he joined his old team, Apple Valley, for a few decent years before new club South Falls, in anticipation of their creation, hired him to take the team's young players to the next level - and he's delivered, leading the team all the way to the finals of the President's Cup. With sidekick and dugout legend Mueller at his side, he’ll need to deliver this Classic.

The others are all some of the best coaches around the nation - leaders and innovators, every last one, in their own way. Special notice was given to clubhouse chemistry. Only a few minor changes have been made - Michael Wang enters for the retiring bullpen coach, while Bryce Flowers replaces Castor Inriquez both as national team hitting coach and Wheathampton hitting coach.

Practice Field, City of Bloodbenderopolis, Frenline Delpha

"Throw me a slider Steve, I need to get better at hitting them! Closers always get me on those"

The tall bulky man, easily sitting in at his team doctor recorded six and a half feet and with massive slabs between his equally tan broad shoulders, his messy blonde hair capped off his somewhat blocky face, and Brandon Lyr, the rising catcher star in the amateur leagues back home, called out to the relief pitcher throwing for batting practice today, the aging Stephen Pearce. Normally, a pitching machine would be used, but Jacob Alder decided his team could stand to throw some batting practices, get their arms in shape since the leagues had been in the off-season for a few weeks now; he wanted to rid off any complacency.

As Brandon sized up the plate, Stephen staring him down for a moment then launching into his windup, pretty close to a standard one taught at academy's except he released just a little lower then most, the dropping slider coming in high and going down as the seventy two miles per hour velocity guided it down and almost past Brandon, except he caught it with the upper bulk of his bat, flinging it down the first base foul line, earning him a smile from himself, and a nod from Stephen.

Over by the hometeam dugout on the practice field, Jacob leaned against the fence, watching his team complete various drills, his under staff coaches guiding them through the motions and loudly calling them out when improperly conducted. Leaning on his shoulder next to him, occasinally digging into the dirt idly with his cleats was his 'man inside the house' as some called them; he wasn't as tall as Brandon, just two inches shy of six feet, and he was developing a little bit of a gut underneath the midnight blue uniforms with gold stripes around the shoulders, but the name emblazoned on the back identified him as the perennial Tony Russell, one of the household names of the three amateur leagues in the kingdom and one of the most consistent batters in the last decade. He had spent eleven years with the same team, earning himself hundreds of hits, RBIs, and doubles which he was very good at hitting, only to be traded four seasons ago for some "younger blood". He didn't let the dishonor effect him, his first season away from home he hit a career high hits, and steals, and beat his former team. Twice.

His selection by Jacob wasn't just for his skill; he was also picked because he was good at playing nice with his team-mates, he was known around the league for being a locker room force, and besides Jacob hoping his contact hitting would rub off on the power hitters, he also hoped he'd help unite the team. The four leagues back home already did inter-connected stats and games, but even then, the teams were still disconnected and while a pro league had been in the talks for years, it wasn't quite a reality and the boys would have to learn to play together, which is why he was here now, talking to Jacob on a number of things. "What do you think of Lyr?"

"Good kid, he'll go far. But MacKey is still the better rounded catcher, especially behind the plate, he has a way of catching those balls exactly where they need to be. Lyr could learn a few things from him in this classic though. Besides, Morgan will only throw to MacKey, they're teammates back home, and that kid has God's Left Arm."

"Hmph. I'm going to need your help to guide double plays, Lewis and you are good at them but Eaves's team back home prefers for outfield popouts, so we're gonna run extra drills with you three, I need ya'll in sync, I'll be using a number of infield shifts."

"Mhmm, you're gonna want to have Cecil warmed to go; Wright forgets how old he is and still goes for those camera catches, if he isn't careful he could hurt himself."

"Indeed, in fact I want you to go over some clean, simple catching with them later tomorrow, you did a stint in LF a few years back and did decent."

"Who we playing first?"

"Another un-ranked team, I'm gonna start out Clarke, no need to use Morgan first, but Clarke is still great and will send a message. You're going to be in the clean-up slot, we're gonna try and get guys on base and then you come in with RBI. If you're hitting too light, I'll put Lyr in, so he can blast it."

"Well, better get out there then and practice up, can't remember how to swing by just jawing with you."

Staff:

Manager: Matthew Patterson
Matthew Patterson as manager of this team has brought the team much success. After a really decent run in the IBS X,
which saw the nation get knocked out late in the tournament in a close game against The Sword Bloke, he went into
the WBC 35, also hoping for a decent run, inspired by teams such as Schiltzberg. The team unfortunately lost in a tiebreaker game, but the tournament was heralded as a success for Ethane, and for the manager, considering it was their first time in the World Baseball Classic. A very successful World Baseball Classic 36 for Ethane, saw them skyrocket up the rankings, a testament of the manager's qualities. He should also have a good tournament here as well, but considering he has not made a single change to the lineup in three editions, pressure will be on him soon because of this.

Assistant Manager: Barrie Herbertson
First Base Coach: Darrel Summer
Third Base Coach: Clyde Hatheway
Batting Coach: Morgan Paul
Pitching Coach: Bradley Donaldson

Schedule:

Match Day One: Vangaziland (UR) vs Ethane (11)
Match Day Two: Ethane (11) vs Ilyseum (UR, Hosts)
Match Day Three: Drawkland (31) vs Ethane (11)
Match Day Four: Skeckoa (66) vs Ethane (11)
Match Day Five: Ethane (11) vs Schiltzberg (1)
Match Days Six to Ten: Same as MD1-5 with home and away teams reversed
Match Days Eleven to Thirty: Schedule as above repeated.

Summary of Group & Chances

Ethane are the second strongest team in the group on paper, giving hope to the chances of Ethane. Games against the likes of Skeckoa and Vangaziland are considered to be easier games in the context of the group, and on paper, they should easily be beaten by us. The game against Drawkland will bring some difficulties, but they are still a lesser team on paper, so overall, it is hoped we would beat them. An interesting bag in the group with the host, Ilyseum, in the group, which will leave questions on whether they will have the home advantage, but with them being a new team to the sport, they shouldn't pose too much of a challenge. The main threat in the group has to be Schiltzberg, top ranked baseball nation, and this will be where Ethane falls down. However, we should be able to slide in second place in the group, hopefully, and therefore progress to the latter stages of the tournament. The question is, how far can Ethane go?

All New Tournament, Yet No Change
James Halworn - Sports Commentator

It is time for a new World Baseball Classic, a tournament in Ethane which everyone loves to watch, but no one understands.

Ethane have been preparing hard for this tournament, as it seems to be the sport Ethane fares the best in. The breakthrough tournament for Ethane last edition has propelled the national team up the rankings, opening the game up for them to challenge for some higher places. Ethane are well set to do this, with extra funding for the team throughout the last two years, developing the baseball national team.

One thing that mystifies everyone though is the fact there have been no personnel changes in the team. The question is: why are the national baseball players the same ones that were welcomed home with a hero's welcome after that first baseball tournament, the IBS X, amateurs at the time, that have now competed in two baseball classics, going at it again? Wouldn't some of them be getting old? Aren't there new, youthful players, more skilled, and an asset for the future, that can be called upon to play for the national team?

The answer to that one is no. To all those who thought that I was about to start being highly critical of the selection team and the manager, you can leave. Its not their fault. It isn't their fault that baseball in Ethane is still massively underfunded? It isn't their fault most schools don't offer baseball, and therefore many kids don't know or understand the sport. It isn't their fault that a systemic fault in the heart of the baseball system in Ethane will destroy the future of the sport if something isn't done about it.

When they first competed, there were loud cries for a professional baseball league, and for baseball to be taught in schools, adopted into a sport that Ethane does. The people wanted it. They fell in love with the sport. That was short-lived though. The government never did anything about it, and the baseball advocates slowly dwindled away, giving up on the future of baseball in Ethane. Only a few remained, but a few is never enough to get the government to fund a sport in its whole entirety. There always is a flurry of support for baseball around major tournaments, but it dies down quickly.

This is a warning. If we don't do something soon to bolster baseball in Ethane, to get some form of league running, and training in place, Ethane's place in future tournaments internationally will be in jeopardy. The tea, won't have the players, or the funding in place to compete. This is not a warning to be taken lightly. Baseball will die in Ethane if something isn't done about it, and quickly. We must act. All those who want baseball must get out, campaign for the government to help fund it.

We mustn't let baseball dwindle off into a memory again, as it has many times before. Its time we got something proper going. Lets work together, and ride on the coattails of this World Baseball Classic to get a baseball league in Ethane, and secure funding for the sport from the government. If we don't do it now, I fear it will be too late for baseball.

The big sports in Vangaziland were basketball, lacrosse and futsal in that order. The most talented athletes played in those leagues. Other sports like gridiron and baseball were seen more as recreational or maybe academic sports. There were pro leagues for most sports though.

The Vannish Baseball Organization was the top pro baseball league in Vangaziland. Along with the Vannish Sports Commission, the VBO has decided to enter a team into the World Baseball Classic. This represents an investment in baseball. A new youth league has also been started to help find new talent and develop baseball for the future.

A national rec league has also been started up. The idea is to try to pull random athletes in that may play something else, but aren't good enough to go pro in other sports. Maybe they can develop a baseball game instead. The program is still in it's infancy, but a few players are being scouted.

The goal is to strengthen the Vannish baseball program over the next few years. In the mean time, Vangaziland has assembled the best players from the VBO to compete against the best of the multiverse.

"It's going to be a rough season", said Coach Don Haverly, the man in charge of the Vannish Royals. "But these players will get experience they can take back to the pros. They are also excited to compete amongst each other. The attitude has been good in practice."

The Coach also spoke on his opponents.

"We are facing a really tough group", he said. "We expect them to thrash us. But we'll keep fighting. Maybe our team can come together and beat the odds. But our goal is to build for the future."

Vangaziland did have some talent. Their top pitchers were all training with Juan Manuel Sanchez, a foreign pitching coach.

"Each pitcher has their attributes", Sanchez told reporters before Game 1. "We're developing each one's arsenal of pitches. We're also working on the basics, like building a good fastball. I think some of our guys will bring the heat this year."

Sanchez was brought in to help develop the Vannish pitchers. He was born in South America, but has been a Vannish citizen for 5 years. He coaches baseball at Blue Coast University.

One of his top talents is Del Bjornberg. The 6'4 pitcher will look to push his fastball. He also has a curveball that might catch some batters off guard. He is pitching first in the rotation and will look to test himself against international competition for the first time.

Khris Olaf is going to be one of the most relied upon relievers. He has a few pitches in his arsenal and stays calm under pressure.

On the fielding side, the Vangazi will look to Chuck Endo to make big plays at SS. It's a tall order, as some of these teams will crush the ball in his direction. The outfield will also have to be on their toes.

Pete Kelderssen is bating lead-off. The second-baseman likes to run. Vannish fans are wondering if he'll play the bases more conservatively on this big stage. "I'm excited for the future of Vannish baseball", Kelderssen said. "Maybe the day will come when baseball tops futsal in Vangaziland."

The Royals look ahead to game 1 and their first World Baseball Classic.

Cosumar National Baseball Team
WBC 37 - Ilyseum & Frenline Delpha

Roster and Information

Basic Team Information

Nation - The Fiefdom of Cosumar
Demonym - Cosumarite
Region - Atlantian Oceania
Official Colors - Royal Blue, White, Navy, Silver
Domestic League - Professional Baseball League of Cosumar ("PBL")
History - This is Cosumar's 22nd WBC. Though the Dragons are experienced at this competition, they have never been particularly successful. Our WBC 36 ranking of 6th was our highest ever, but has decreased sharply (to 15th) following a lackluster showing.
Style Modifier - -2.5

Stadia

Primary Stadium - Orangi Field (Indoor, Capacity 55.000)

Sponsored by Cosumar's most popular carbonated beverage "Orangi Flavored Sodas", Orangi Field is an enormous indoor baseball complex in west-coast hub Crawford. In pleasant weather, the dome's roof will be open, welcoming that beloved sunny-day baseball game feel. However, in the event of precipitation, the roof can be closed as seen below. Orangi Field was constructed prior to Cosumar's WBC 18 campaign. It has been selected to once again serve as the Dragons' primary home field for the 37th World Baseball Classic. It is next-door to the similarly-named Orangi Stadium, a soccer stadium that houses Crawford City FC.

Image

Secondary Stadium - Royal Park (Outdoor, Capacity 41.000)

Royal Park is a beautiful old-fashioned field that serves as the home field for our most famous domestic team, the Ramusok Royals. Although not as high-tech as Orangi Field, Royal Park is legendary because of its rich history. It is known as Royal Park not just because of the team name of its tennant, but also because it is just right down the road from the Royal Palace. King James II himself is often sighted here for games. From the natural green grass to the cheap food, 59-year-old Royal Park offers the classic ballgame experience. Decades worth of tradition and amazing moments of Cosumarite baseball. It will serve as an alternate to Orangi Field in case of emergency, and our FIRST home game is always played here due to tradition.

Uniform

Image

The uniform of Cosumar Baseball, as is tradition, consists of a navy shirt with silver sleeves and pants. The hat is also navy, with a silver C in the center. The socks are silver with a blue stripe. The number will go in the top right corner of the front of the shirt and in the center on the back. The player's last name will be placed on the back, arched over the number.

Coaching Staff

Manager - Toby MacHart

This will be MacHart's fifth WBC in charge, after replacing 87-year-old longtime manager Don Clintson for WBC 32. MacHart, 67, is twenty years younger than Clinton, but still offers a bevy of experience in the game and could be nearing the finale of his career as well. He was a PBL superstar as a player until a knee injury cut short his legacy at age 29. After a few failed comebacks were stalled by nagging knee issues, MacHart decided to go into coaching since he couldn't play anymore. At 32, he became the youngest PBL manager in history with expansion team Olask Bulldogs. After a long and successful tenure at Olask, he departed to become a baseball broadcast specialist for CSBN for many years. He made his grand return to coaching to assist Clintson in WBC 31 as an assistant. Clintson's stroke just before WBC 32 thrusted MacHart into his first managerial position in over a decade, but he thrived right away. The players love him and draw from his energy and confidence.

First Base Coach - Rodney Bellums

Bellums was a college star and a former #1 draft pick. After a few seasons in the PBL it was clear he was a huge bust, not cut out for the big leagues. After being downgraded to the minor leagues and disappointing even at that level, Bellums bitterly decided he was done with baseball. He tried an assortment of projects including starting businesses but none were successful. After many years he decided to go back to the game he loved - but this time as a coach. He started out with small positions for small teams but eventually worked his way up to become to First Base Coach of the National Team. 61 years old.

Third Base Coach - Louis Copenhaver

Copenhaver is much different than his fellow coaches. He was never really much of a baseball player. He just loved to watch his hometown team - the Ramusok Royals. His enthusiasm for the Royals earned him the spot of "Bat Boy" at age 13. He stuck with the job for 5 or 6 years and was mentored in the finer points of the game by Don Clintson himself. When their opening for Base Running Coach came up a few years later, Copenhaver was persistent and gave them no choice but to hire him. He continued to move up in the organization. After ten years as the Royals' third base coach (the position he still holds for the NT), he filled the vacancy that opened up for Manager just last season. Who better to carry the legacy of Clintson than his protégée Copenhaver? Despite never playing the game, Copenhaver has earned the respect of players and coaches with his brilliant baseball mind and friendly demeanor. He is currently 45 years old.

About Ilyseum

Ilyseum is a nation in the Realm of the Gods, an alternate reality where gods are real, electricity does not exist and magical powers exist. Ilyseum is the name given to the Ilysee Republic, which is centered around the Eternal Capital of Ilysea. Ilysea is a massive city, one of the largest in the Realm of the Gods, built on a dozen hills and home to over a million.

Baseball is one of the sports that survived almost completely intact in the Realm of the Gods. While Ilysee baseball uniforms have grown to resemble the uniforms of the Ilysee legions rather than conventional baseball uniforms and the Ilysee style of play gradually reverted back to a style of play focused around small ball rather than power hitting. Ilysee batters tend to play aggressive, trying to make contact whenever possible, Ilysee baserunners try to steal bases when possible, Ilysee starting pitchers are expected to throw complete games on a regular basis and Ilysee managers do not hesitate to call for hit and run plays, sacrifice bunts or squeeze plays. The designated hitter rule was unheard of in Ilyseum prior to contact with the Other Reality and is not used by the Ilysee team even when their opponent is at home and is using a designated hitter.

World Baseball Classic 37: Frenline Delpha and Ilyseum

For your cut-off this tournament, I will be introducing you to a new, better version of the ABCs you all know and love. May I present you, the Al-phabet. Each day, I will have a Weird Al song linked with my cut-off. The catch being that the songs will be alphabetically listed, so today, we begin with A. And for that, I present Amish Paradise.

Skeckoa City Daily Whig: Skeckoa Baseball Turmulous Start

Postby Skeckoa » Thu Aug 25, 2016 5:37 am

ETERNAL CITY, Ilyesum - AP - Skeckoa got off to a rough start in the WBC after dropping 2 of their first three games of group play. The first game in particular was a heartbreaking 5-3 against Schlitzberg. The lost occurred despite the fact that Skeckoa held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the eight.

"It was a tough break for our bullpen, those are games that we should be winning" said Manager Geronimo Cruz after the game. Starting pitcher Andres Carter went 7.1IP with 2ER,3BB,7H,6K before being pulled with runners on first and second in the fateful eight inning.

"I had it all working today, I feel good to start another game real soon" the Ace said after the game.

The relative pitchers duel came to an abrupt stop after Schlitzberg put six consecutive men on base in the eight before finally hitting into a rally-killing double play. This game showed a lot of promise for the #66 ranked Skeckoa. They were able to go toe-to-toe against the #1 ranked team in the world and did so impressively.

The second game of the triple-header heeded better results as Sleckoa trounced the untangled Vangaziland 5-2 in a convincing victory lead by the pitching effort of Willard Portis in his WBC debut. Portis, who is on a short leash for pitch count due to prior elbow issues, clocked in 6 innings of work with only a two run home run in the third inning counted against him.

For the Verdimorados, Beltre, Santos, and Metelinoma'teht all had RBI's.

Skeckoa FedNat Beisbol Newsletter: Meeting the Natives

Postby Skeckoa » Thu Aug 25, 2016 6:04 am

This WBC the Skeckoa national selection will include the likes of Ko'kung Etrokeh'pesh, K'Kotin Metilonoma'tëht, and Pokairon Peterfem'keu. These three men, besides the weight of the pressure of the tournament, are also carrying the indigenous population of Skeckoa on their shoulders.

"We're ambassadors, there's no other way of putting it lightly" said Pokairon through a translator. The community has given us so much, this is our chance to show the rest of Skeckoa how much we matter and that we are an integral part of their country.

Pokairon has more than anyone embraced the role of ambassador and has used his relative fame to shed light on issues affecting indigenous Esquequis. His work has included bring baseball and school equipment to schools in the remote areas of the country to ensure that indigenous Esquequis can get good education and so that they can learn Spanish in order to help them integrate economically into the populace. In addition to his work in charity he has also provided support to the controversial Esquequi Indiginous Party (Pakatxú Eskekik'khan).

On the other end of the spectrum within the party Pitcher Ko'kung Etrokeh'pesh has family ties to militant arm of the party and has been suspected of police of numerous crimes connected to the guerilla group. Though he has never been convicted or found guilty of any crime, he remains under suspicion and is one of thee most controversial public figures in the Indiginous community. Regardless, he still carries the Esquequi flag with him at all times alongside the flag of the party and is a vocal supporter of his people's advancement. "Whatever it takes to get us justice, whatever it takes to get prosperity" he said in an interview following one of his court trials.

The final native Esquequi K'Kotin Metilonoma'tëht is not as vocal as the first two about his origins. He is best known for being a fun loving dugout prankster. "I'm happy, I like making people smile, that's my motto. If I can pass on positive energy from me to you, I've done my job. Well one of them, for my other job I have to learn how to hit a rock with a stick".

Three different ambassadors from the Indiginous community, they have been the head of a major uptick of baseball players coming from Skeckoa's most impoverished regions. Many natives play in the LPBE and many more are in the pipelines in their way up. These three represent the finest baseball players that that pipeline has to offer.

From "DIE SPORTMAGAZINE 98
1 WIN AND 2 LOST: BUT GOOD PERFORMANCE

At first seem, it a "disaster" we have lost the first two match, and win the last, we can't pass the turn? Probably not, but Alinghi is a first time what partecipate and in Alinghi actually is not so popular sport.

The first mat, we had lost for a only one point, and the result are revealed only at last, at 9th inning. 8-9 for the W. Saintland, worst against Anglatia, we ad lost 0-4.

A match against Gregoryisgodstan is very hansome surpire, at the begin of the match the national's teams are a parity 1-0, 0-0, 0-2 at the first tree innigs, after the our team do the boorst di a fantastic 3-1, and dominate the 6th n 7th inning. The mathc ended with a wonderful 8-4 for the our Republic

SCHILTZBERG DOING WELL THUS FAR

Schiltzberg returns with enormous expectations, having won back-to-back WBCs and three of the last four titles, but the team only continues to excite. William McKey is the National Baseball League of Schiltzberg's reigning Pitcher of the Year award winner, finishing the season with a 25-6 record, 210 strikeouts, 75 walks, with a 0.96 WHIP and 2.01 ERA over the course of 296.2 innings pitched. The NBLS has a longer season than most major baseball leagues, with 180 games in a season, and so McKey started 37 of the games for his team, the New Schiltzbierg Grand Dukes, putting up 35 quality starts, 16 complete games, and six complete game shutouts, recording an unbelievable season that is the best of his career thus far. McKey's Grand Dukes had an amazing season, putting up a top 119-41 record, which won them the division championship. They then went on a roll to sweep the Western Conference Championship Series three games to none, and then win the season series four games to one. McKey pitched three playoff games, and won them all as complete games, giving up just four total earned runs.

Now coming to the World Baseball Classic, just seven weeks after the Season Series ended, it seemed obvious that McKey would be the number one pitcher in the rotation. Manager Robert Evans had different plans though, favoring the ace of his own team back home (the Hamilton Hawks) David Toups, who is very inferior to McKey statistically. Either way, McKey is a part of a great team and will have a great opportunity to excel, as always, in this World Baseball Classic. Schiltzberg will play all of the preliminary rounds at the very pitcher-friendly ballpark, known as Olympia Coliseum, which should only help McKey and his fellow pitchers. The problem will be that the opposing pitchers will also be benefited by this factor, and it may lead to Schiltzberg's pitching dominance being evened out to some degree.

Olympia Coliseum was not built specifically for baseball, and as a result, it is somewhat unfit to be played in, as the first three games of this competition have seemed to be a completely different sport. Schiltzberg has a strong pitching staff, but they also have a very powerful lineup at the plate, and this is weakened by the enormity of the ballpark, which has made the longball a much lesser factor. In the first three games, Schiltzberg has actually beaten out more inside-the-park home runs than out of the stadium home runs, as it is seemingly easier just to drop the ball into one of the enormous outfield gaps to the point that it is nearly impossible for the outfielder to make any sort of play on the ball. Manager Robert Evans commented on the stadium, "It is really just too big. Like way, way, way too big. Back home, those distances of the outfield walls are literally out of regulation, and that stadium would be deemed unfit to play in. We played a game out there today, but it wasn't like any other game I have ever seen. It wasn't baseball. It is amazing to me that the World Baseball Classic allowed such a stadium to be used in such a large international competition."

As far as the actual games, Schiltzberg did well. They have won all three of the games up to this point. The first game, against Skeckoa, was a pitchers duel until the very end when it was broken up. David Toups had a strong first five innings, giving up just one run in those five innings on a walk that was followed by a triple in the top of the second inning. The game got away from him in the sixth when he walked another, and then the next batter hit a ball into the enormous gap in left field. By the time Chris Vrooman had even gotten to the ball, the batter was already more than halfway to third. That batter went on to get an inside-the-park home run, and Vrooman's throw to the plate was not even close to getting him out, but there was no error on the play, because the scorekeeper ruled that Vrooman had no chance of throwing him out to begin with. Schiltzberg scored their first run of WBC 37 when Ducky Fitzhugh and Chris Vrooman both hit the corners of the stadium and got back-to-back triples. Vrooman got the RBI. The team was nearly silent offensively until the eighth, when their offense exploded and they continued to hit the enormous gaps of the stadium. The first at bat of the inning was a strikeout and then the next two batters of the inning were walked by the fatiguing pitcher, who was then taken out of the game. The top of the order then came up for Schiltzberg, and Mark Daly hit a double to left-center that scored two runs and tied the game. Then Ducky Fitzhugh once again hit the left field corner, and he made it around to score an inside-the-park home run, completing the cycle, after hitting a single in the first, a triple in the fourth, a double in the sixth, and now a home run in the eighth. This marked the first time that a Schiltzberger had hit an inside-the-park home run in the World Baseball Classic and also the first time that any Schiltzberger had hit for the cycle. Chris Vrooman was hit by a pitch and Francis Thom reached on an error by the shortstop, but then Manual Villegaus grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Schiltzberg took its first win of the tournament after the first of many crazy games.

William McKey started his first game of the season against Drawkland, and he went all nine innings, giving up just two runs on four hits, one of which was an inside-the-park home run in the fourth. The other run was scored on back-to-back doubles in the second inning, where a runner was able to score and tie the game at that point. Schiltzberg's Mark Daly led off their half of the first with a 407 foot home run over the left field fence, marking the first orthodox home run Schiltzberg had made up until that point. Schiltzberg got three hits then in the second inning, two singles and then a two-out triple, which scored both of the other baserunners. Then in the sixth inning, Chris Vrooman led off with a double, and then was knocked in on a triple by Francis Thom, who scored on a sacrifice fly from Manual Villegaus. Thomas Saiz then doubled with one out, and Bob Rutledge hit a deep shot to left field that would have been over the wall in any NBLS stadium, but not here. Speedy Bobby got all the way home though, just beating the tag at the plate for the second inside-the-park home run in Schiltzberg's WBC history... The inning then ended after back-to-back strikeouts, and Schiltzberg went on to win the game 7-2.

Henry Price was the starter of the third game, against Vangaziland, and this game was a hitters match. Vangaziland struck first with an over-the-fence home run (427 feet) over the left field wall in the second inning, and then another that went to right-center in the fourth (462 feet). Schiltzberg slugged their way through their half of the third, as Bob Rutledge and Wayne Knox both singled and were knocked in by Mark Daly who tripled, and then Daly was also knock in on a sacrifice fly by Ducky Fitzhugh. Price gave up a single, a double, a triple, and then a home run (in that order) to start out the sixth inning, which gave Vangaziland the unusual achievement of collectively hitting for the natural cycle all in one inning without getting an out, which has never been recorded to have been done in all of the history of professional baseball. Price was then removed from the game after having given up those four runs in the sixth, and the two runs in the innings before that. The big inning did not give up Schiltzberg's lead though, because they had also had an even bigger inning the previous half inning. Francis Thom was hit by a pitch, then Manual Villegaus hit a home run to dead center that just barely cleared the wall (446 feet). Thomas Saiz doubled, and then was knocked in by a triple from Bob Rutledge for the third run of the inning. Wayne Knox then hit the ball into the left field corner, and was marked with an RBI double, but he came around to score on a double error on the outfielder, as he dropped the ball after he initially picked it up, and then he made an errant throw to third base that allowed Knox to score. Price then struck out for the first out of the inning, and then Mark Daly and Ducky Fitzhugh hit back-to-back doubles, and Daly scored. The six-run inning made it so that Schiltzberg has now had a big inning of four runs or more in every one of their first three games, and their rallies have been a major key to their success thus far. Vangaziland tried to bounce back and nearly did, hitting a home run in the seventh, and then rallying in the ninth with a two-out triple that was followed by an RBI double. The next batter was struck out though, and Schiltzberg won its third straight, stranding the tying run in scoring position.

Ilyseum - A Place Like None Other
James Halworn - Sports Commentator

There are not many places like Ilyseum. When you first think about Ilyseum, and its place in 'the realm of gods', you do wonder what kind of place it would be. It actually feels a bit scary thinking about it. What kind of 'gods' are these? Are they all-powerful, destructive 'gods', or do they protect people. Up front, with the rise of Ilysea, it does immediately appear to the basic onlooker that they are destructive 'gods'.

What you need to do is look at the history. If you look at their history, you see the reason why the 'realm of gods' has humans in was because they were brought there by the 'gods' to stop them from going completely extinct. When you look at this, going there does seem to be a lot less scary. These 'gods' aren't oppressors, they are protectors, and you are by all means welcome there. Very much so, as I found out when I arrived.

When you arrive in Ilysea, your jaw will drop. The place is remarkable as you enter. They don't let up on grandeur, although that is what you would expect from Gods. Looking around, you could see gold, silver, and other beautiful gems. The place was beautiful. The architecture was outstanding, different from other places. The place was bustling, but not an uncomfortable bustling, crowded in.

The best was yet to come though. You see, this place is like the normal world, where you and me come from. There are no trains, buses and cars, no guns and bullets. This place is not like that. This place is a hark back to the olden days, much like the Greek and Roman empires everyone used to learn about in school.

The fact of the matter is, they still need a way to travel round. They do this by horses. Riding a horse is certainly not one to miss if you do visit. It is the best way to travel, and although it is a bit slower than more conventional ways, the thrill of it is exalting. No pollution, just the fresh, mild air blowing against your face as the beast in front of you neighs, trotting along, its hooves hitting on the floor one at a time, slowly moving along the road.

I feel privileged to say the least, being able to be here, because they don't commonly open it up to humans. If you do get the chance to visit, for the sports, or else, make sure to take a look around. The place is beautiful, and one sight everyone should see. I am lucky in that I will be here for this tournament, and the Olympia Games, so I have time to see more, and I must advise you, come join me. It's amazing.

The gods are with them

What a start to the World Baseball Classic 37 it has been. With thirty games, this is going to be no short run, but everyone knows Ethane is in for a good chance, and is anticipating this.

The team haven't let down so far either. Three games in, and Ethane has won two of them.

In the first game for the Ethanese players, they showed what they were made of and thrashed Vangaziland. Scoring one run in the second innings, the team went on to score two and four runs in the two consecutive innings. Vangaziland, not wanting to fall behind in the game, also scored a fair few home runs, one in the third innings and three in the fourth, but Ethane still had the lead. Some great pitching work from the Ethanese pitchers kept the opposition off the scoreboard again, while the striking force hit out with power, slowly but consistently building up home runs to gain a huge margin on the opposing team.

Ethane were hoping to continue with another win at Ilyseum as well, and for most of the game, they were doing fairly well. Matching the runs scored by Ilyseum in the second inning, Ethane weren't going to let them get away. Ilyseum scored one and then two home runs in the sixth and seventh inning, to go three in the lead, but the Ethanese weren't going to let it rest there, and fought back to score three runs in the eighth inning, to level the scores once again, pulling it out into a longer game. Ethane had some strong batting performances in the proceeding innings, but some strong pitching work kept them from scoring. Ethane's pitchers also played a strong game, but they couldn't hold on forever, and conceded two crucial home runs in the eleventh inning. Ethane, desperate, tried to match these runs, but alas, the home runs could not be found, and Ilyseum walked away with the victory. The gods were on their side this game.

Ethane had the third game against Drawkland, a team that they were wary of possibly causing some problems for them in this group as an underdog to the team. Ethane managed to get in with the scoring early though, keeping Drawkish points at bay, and taking the lead. Drawkland did fight back to level the score in the fourth over, scoring two home runs, their only two of the match, but in the end, this would never be enough. Solitary home runs in the all of the next three overs gave Ethane a vital lead, and it appeared the Drawkish strikers knew it was over.

In the end, it was the consistent performance of the stronger team that beat the 'inspiring underdog story' team, and the team will be hoping that this is the story of the group. That the underdogs may be inspiring, but they can't do enough to beat the stronger, more consistent teams at the top. All we have to look forward to now is my favourite game of our group, and our most challenging game series in the group. The one versus, the three time champions, back to back winners of the World Baseball Classic, and the top ranked team in baseball. Schiltzberg. Good luck guys.
Esportivan and Proud.
<drawk> If the entirety of the nation of Ethane was covered in a single cubic foot of Ethane on its surface, lighting it all on fire would cause a 5.44 megaton blast.

The Day Following Game 3
Practice Field, City of Bloodbenderopolis, Frenline Delpha

"That the best slider you got Ian?! I've seen fucking little leaguers throw better then that crap you just gave Jason, try it fucking again!"

The stout, fierce looking pitching coach was shouting from to the side of the home plate along the third base line, shouting at the relief pitcher on the mound, Ian Burch, whose face had large beads of sweat running marathons from his brow to his jawline, and he once again began his windup, made it threw and released the ball at a normal slot and the hard slider cut right down through where a batter's hitting zone would be and landed into Jason MacKey's glove with a loud snap, Bernard giving a small clap. "Alright, let's keep practicing that and see if we can get you and your fellow relievers to do that for the rest of the time in games, we lost two easy games, Frenline Delpha was a hard loss but we did good, but those are two against Southern Democratic States and New Jarwel, no excuses, we can do better. Now, let's see that curveball again."

Meanwhile, all over the rest of the field the rest of the players were being put through the paces, but the pitchers especially were being worked hard by the coaches; the loss to Southern Democratic States had been close, a blown save in truth that was chalked up to a bad breaking ball from Lewis Cohen, but then the loss to New Jarwel was disgusting, only one run against an similarly un-ranked team was embarrassing; the only player who has managed to get a hit in each game was, not surprisingly, Tony Russell. He himself was now working with the infield crew, showing them some tricks to hitting break balls, and working the count in their favor. He had noticed that they had been extremely aggressive on the first two pitches and after that, when behind in the count, swung at a lot of things they should have held on, so he was showing them how to recognize the strike zone, and not to swing at something unless it was a good 'cookie'.

Jacob Alder was sitting in the dugout, watching the practices and drills, but also pouring his eyes over statisic reports, lineup sheets, and a number of things, with his number two, bench coach Sinjin Philips, sitting next to him in a white polo and talking strategy with him "So we're gonna move Lyr into the DH slot? "

"Yes, his power is what we need, and he seems to be good on contact as well. I want the guys who aren't starting put through the paces too, if Eaves or Kirby need to be benched because Watson or Lodge are doing better, we're going to do it quick we need some solid wins fast before we have no chance."

"Clarke and the others had a really bad start, especially Donald, are we thinking some extra conditioning? Donald just did garbage those first few innings, and bullpen blew it further."

"I'm hoping that's all nerves, 'cause Alair dueled one of the best international teams in the multiverse and he gave up 3 hits and 1 run, which I'm calling pretty damn good considering he's only 22. I'm going to keep an eye on Valentine in tomorrow's game, Ko-oren is a recognized force, but I'm hoping Eaves, Kirby and the boys can combine for some power hitting early on to get it done."

" What about the other two games, Amazonesta and then SDS again?"

"I'm eager for the revenge greeting at SDS, Noah will be up again and I've already spoken to him and he's rearing for blood, him and that nasty cutter of his."

"Here's to hoping they all show up then."

"Mhm. O, I got a call from Ethan Wright, the MP for Chorley -"

"Isn't he the under-sectary for the Minister of Sports?"

"Yes, anyways, he gave me a call and said Minister Eliah Fletcher and himself are going to be here for that second SDS game and the next four games after that, wanted to talk to the team, see how we are doing, stuff like that."

Sinjin leered "Is that code for if we do good, they'll follow through on a pro league finally?"

Jacob looked up briefly, and shot Sinjin a knowing look, and Sinjin nodded and then made his way out of the dugout "Need to get these fuckers to win then eh?"

Press Conference

Postby The Fair Republic » Thu Aug 25, 2016 8:37 pm

Tony Williams walks into the media room. The Toucans stumbled out of the gate going 1-2. The Toucan pitching has imploded, allowing 21 runs in 3 games. With losses to Super-Llamaland and San Llera has put extra pressure on the Toucans to not make any mistakes against the other teams in the group. He sits down and reports start to raise their hand.

"Jack Smith, Vis Vires Times. Any Idea what is going on with the pitching?"

"Look. We only have 4 inning of crappy pitching that hurt us. Those innings are responsible for 17 out of the 21 runs scored against us. Also those innings were against two teams ranked in the top twenty. Beside that, our pitching has been fine"

"Kristin Scott, Republic Daily. Do you plan on making any lineup adjustments?"

"No. I am not going to overreact because of 2 bad games. We have a lot of baseball left and I am going to wait until I have some more results if I am going to make any lineup changes"

"Jane Rose, TFR Sports Weekly. Do you have any complaints about the umpires so far?"

"Nice Try. I'm not going to say anything that is going to cause controversy"

"Tommy Anderson, Masternville Post. Your next games are against The Greater Korean Republic, Korizland and Confederate Islands of Paputu again. All of these teams are unranked. Do you have to keep on guard for your team taking them too lightly?"

"Yes, overconfidence is always something we have to look out for. Considering how we have underperformed in the last couple of WBC's and did not qualify for WBC 36, I would say that the boys have learned their lesson a long time ago. The Toucan formula of good pitching and defense and timely hitting is still a hard combination to defeat. I look forward to staying in Frenline Delpha further and experiencing one great WBC. That is all. I will talk to you guys after the next 3 game set.
