His Royal Majesty, Yitzchak ben Benyamin ben Yehudah, as decreed by the Almighty, King of Judeans, Lord of Jerusalem and All Israel and Syria, Defender of the Temple, welcomes knights from across the known world to the Holy City of Jerusalem to participate in this competition of arms. Of the five and forty (45) who have arrived to participate in the Joust, only two and thirty (32) will participate in the main tournament. That this might be facilitated, King Yitzchak has declared that the main tournament shall be preceded by a group stage.

For each bout, the jousters shall ride a number of tilts against one another. If a jouster shall break his lance upon his opponent, he shall be granted one lance. If he shall break his lance upon his opponent’s helm he shall be granted two lances. If he should unhorse his opponent he shall be granted three lances. Whichever jouster has the most lances at the end of the bout shall win the bout. If jousters have like numbers of lances then the jouster who has unhorsed his opponent more times shall win the bout. If each jouster shall have like numbers of lances and unhorsings, then the bout shall end in a draw.

For the group stage, the jousters shall be divided into groups of four and each jouster shall test himself against each of the others within his the group. Such tests shall be to three tilts. The winner of a bout shall be awarded three flags, a draw shall award each participant a single flag and a jouster who unhorses his opponent shall be awarded a single flag. Within each group, the two jousters who have the most flags will be entered into the main tournament and of those remaining they shall also be entered into the main tournament until all spots have been filled by order of flags. If there is need to break a tie, the order of precedence for such breakings shall be total lances, then total unhorsed opponents, fewest times unhorsed, then head-to-head lances, head-to-head unhorsing, and finally to the one who has been judged by the King’s physicians to be least injured. If jousters are found in all other ways to be equal and only a part of them shall be entered into the main tournament, then lots shall be drawn to find those jousters who shall advance.

The jouster of highest social status (or at least the one that the King’s protocolists has determined to the best of their ability to be of the highest status) from each realm will not need to enter the group stage but will instead begin their jousting in the main tournament.

For the main tournament, jousters will draw lots to determine who will face one another in bouts of five tilts unless one of the jousters is unhorsed. If at the end of a bout there would be a draw, then the jousters will be obliged to make additional passes until such time as one will have the advantage of the other. The winners of each bout will then draw new lots to determine their next bout and this shall continue until there remains one jouster who shall be declared the Joust Champion and be awarded the prize of a one cubit by half-cubit by half-cubit golden trophy of a crowned rampant lion gripping in his raised right paw a sword and in his lowered left paw a harp.

The scorinator for the joust is the Medieval Europe Jousting Scorinator (v0.2.0) developed by myself. This scorinator will output overall scores for each bout as well as the results of individual tilts, if the jousters have been unhorsed and the amount of injury they have received. Injuries will stack on top each other and will reduce your jouster’s chances of performing well. To combat this, making quality RP and often will allow you to increase your jouster’s chances. RP will be judged on the criteria of quantity, quality and interaction with other players. Your RP bonus for each day will be a sum of the bonus accumulated prior to the most recent cut off and the bonus accumulated since the last cutoff multiplied by a daily RP multiple. Injury penalties will also accumulate, though at the end of each matchday the injury penalty will be reduced by one (1) to a minimum of zero (0). RP bonus will be applied to all your jousters while injury penalties will only affect the injured jouster.

Cutoffs will occur every other day between 21:00-24:00 UTC-7 (04:00-07:00 UTC).

INFORMATION

Postby House of Judah » Mon Jul 18, 2016 9:01 pm

General Information

The Kingdom of Judea is a medieval realm in the Holy Land ruled by the Jewish king Yitzchak ben Benyamin ben Yehudah, the patriarch of the House of Judah. The Kingdom is a hereditary absolute theocratic monarchy where many of the laws are from the Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible. In his wisdom King Yitzchak has ordered that members of other faiths will have the right of safe conduct, but such only protects them from duties and abuses for their faith and does not exempt them from the law and can still be held to account for crimes they commit. Although laws concerning religious practice do not apply to non-Jews, other laws, such as the forbiddance of inducing a Jew to apostasy, do and are rigorously applied.

Accommodation

The King has invited a number of those who have made the journey to Jerusalem to lodge within King David’s Citadel, the fortress-palace at the western gate of the city from where King Yitzchak rules, though some will have to find other lodgings. Christians are welcome to stay at the Hospital of Saint James in Jerusalem, a shelter for pilgrims maintained by the Order of Christian Guardians of Nazareth (the Nazorean Guard), a brotherhood of Christian knights who serve the King of Judeans and protect Christian pilgrims and holy sites on his behalf. Others may find lodging in one of the cities many taverns, or as a renter in a local family’s home or, if they are of so ill a disposition that no man will welcome him, in a stable. The King has made provision for silver to be paid on behalf of any participant in the Joust whose lodging will require payment.

Those invited to King David’s Citadel:
Cassius Alberg, Duke of Joudton (COS)

Things to do in Jerusalem

The Golden City of Jerusalem is holy to Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths and is home to many holy sites. Many Jews who make the pilgrimage to the city make sure to offer sacrifices to God at the Temple. For Christians, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre stands at the end of the Via Dolorosa. Across the Temple Mount there is a raised path that Muslim pilgrims may walk upon such that they might view the Well of Souls without setting foot upon the holy ground of the Temple.

For those of a more intellectual bend, the King has made available his extensive library which contains works of Plato, Aristotle, the Geonim, Al-Kindi and many others. Also present are the king’s many chess boards and small trinkets designed to test the users wits and dexterity.

There are many taverns in Jerusalem where one may take to drink if they so inclined. And if a person’s tastes are for even less wholesome activities, there of course the gambling houses and brothels. Though many of those places are of obvious ill repute, it is said the Bounty of Eden has hosted and served many of the realms notables, even some members of the royal house. Be warned that even the more civilized of these houses keep meticulous track of the debts owed them and do not treat kindly with those who fail to pay.

A DEMONSTRATION

Postby House of Judah » Mon Jul 18, 2016 9:02 pm

The King’s tournament was set to begin within days, but already the festival was growing in intensity and the masses were already calling for the games to begin. To help placate them the King had selected several of his knights to participate in demonstration jousts prior to the tournament.

Among those selected were Sir Arnau de Jordà, the master of the Yafo chapter of the Nazorean Guard, and Sir Gavriel ben Eyal of the King’s personal bodyguard. Both were seasoned warriors in their own rights. Sir Gavriel had served in then Prince Yitzchak’s army during the campaign through Transjordan which secured the rich and fertile lands on the eastern bank of the Jordan river for the kingdom and had, for a time at least, ended the attempts by the Abbasid Caliph to once again wrest control of Yerushalayim and Eretz Yisrael from the heirs of King David. Sir Arnau had most recently marched with Prince Ari, King Yitzchak’s second son, when led the armies of the kingdom to lay siege upon the Alan barbarians at Aleppo.

The two riders aligned themselves at opposing ends of the list. Sir Gavriel lifted his black shield which bore the copper ox head pierced through the neck by an arrow that he had adopted years ago when the late King Benyamin had granted him his estate and copper mine in the Arabah. Sir Arnau’s presented a quartering of his own family’s arms, blue with a white cross pattée, and the arms of the Yafo chapter of the Nazorean Gaurd, itself a quartering of the sword and scallop on red of the arms of Saint James and the golden lighthouse on blue of Yafo.

The ram’s horn blew and the two servants who stood in the middle of the list dropped their banners before running from the list lest they be trampled by horses. Both men reared the mounts before commencing their charge across the ground of the old Roman hippodrome.

The two horses drew close. The jousters lowered their lances. In a moment they would hit.

Arnau de Jordà UNHORSED Gavriel ben Eyal, Gavriel ben Eyal WAS INJURED (4), Arnau de Jordà WAS INJURED (1)

The lances of both riders shattered and a great ring was heard as both men whipped backwards from a blow to the helm. They each reached the far end of the list and their squires came forward to calm the horses and see to their masters. Sir Gavriel removed his helm to show a bruise. A small thing. An injury not worthy of mention. Sir Arnau was not so unharmed when his helm was removed. A small smattering of blood where his helm had impacted his head and cut it. Sir Arnau’s squire reached up to him a cloth which the knight took up and used to clear the blood. A Nazorean physician came and looked at the cut.

“You’ve had worse, my lord, and kept fighting Alan bastards. I see no reason you cannot tilt again.”

“Even if you did see such I would tilt again. It is my way.”

Again the two riders made ready, lifted their shields, spurred their horses, lowered their lances and hit their opponent. Again Sir Arnau’s helmet rung as Sir Gavriel’s lance shattered on it, but this time Sir Arnau’s lance did not just crack upon his opponents helm but indeed did knock Sir Gavriel from his mount. Sir Gavriel’s squire and a physician rushed to the downed man. They helped him to sit and remove his helm.

“My vision spins before me.”

“You’ve been concussed, sir. No more jousting for you today. My orders.”

“You would order your lord?”

“Yes sir. Much as an ass will order the farmer to bed when the sun has gone down but the farmer has not the sense to rest for the next day’s exertions.”

“Ha! An ass indeed. Come, Itamar. Help me stand. Yerushalayim must see me stand.” The squire helped Sir Gavriel to rise and the people of Yerushalayim cheered to his recovery as he made his way off the ground of the hippodrome.

Preview: Meet the Jousters

Postby Drawkland » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:59 pm

By decree of the Drawkionels, the Noble Kingdom of Drawkland shall enter the "Judean Royal Joust," an international event the likes of which have never been seen. 5 jousters of exceptional skill and quality have been selected by the Drawkionels themselves to compete for Drawkland's glory. If you've not heard of these icons in your lifetime, then here we've assembled small snippets for your reading pleasure.

Image
NAME: CALLAGARD
Place of Origin: Bellator, Callagardet
Occupation: Drawkionel
Group: None
Bio: Born as an adoptive daughter of the ruling family of Bellator, Callagard became the Queen of Bellator by what some say is a fluke, and others say is fate. Regardless what the few existing pundits proclaim, Callagard was one of the driving forces in uniting the Drawkian lands, and thus she rules as Drawkionel over her new territory. Recent lore has it that when the Drawkionels discovered this competition, they decided to enter one of their own, and thus Callagard, from her skill with horses and related competitions, was selected to be entered. While not having competed recently, it is well expected that the Drawkionel will live up to her expectations and represent the Kingdom well as a whole. Special access to King David's Citadel, the palace of Judah, has been granted to her, as well as bypassing the group stage of the tournament.
Her coat of arms, as shown to the left, represents the Family Animal of Callagard's ancestors, the Stag, arranged in their traditional red and black flair. This is the traditional family crest of the Royal Bellatoran Family, which Callagard has appropriated to be hers. The difference is in the crest shape (traditionally it was circular).

Image
NAME: LORD ROY IV
Place of Origin: Raikennax, Callagardet
Occupation: City Lord
Group: ו (Vav)
Bio: Raised as a son of Lord Roy III of Raikennax, Roy IV is, quite visibly, the fourth Roy in the Raikennax lineage. For those who do not keep up with Central Drawkian City Politics, this also means he is the 4th male to rule the Western Callagardet city in many generations, so far back that we lost count and burned our abacuses (or is it abaci? If only we had some method in which we could search for such things) for heresy. He has certainly proved himself a worthy Lord, however, being equally as ruthless and strategizing as the dozens of women and trio of men before him. As far as this competition goes, he too has jousted with much success before, and has been granted an invitation to King David's Citadel. He is the highest-ranked Drawkian to be kept in the group stage, being drawn in Group Vav, alongside Denasil of Yesopalitha, Fedor Artemy Seshtyorkin of "TGOD," and Sir An of Jolie of Sasil Hangug.
His coat of arms is the one held by the Roys of Raikennax, and represents valor, wealth, loyalty, and many other cliche-type adjectives you'd imagine a haughty modern ruler to use when describing himself or his vision of the lands in his ownership.

Image
NAME: GORDARKEL
Place of Origin: Oweton, Iarocavet
Occupation: Professional Jouster
Group: ה (He)
Bio: From a small town, maybe even a village, more accurately a hamlet, really, was born a child, who would become a man. Specifically, the man who would dominate the Jousting scene in his nation against many expectations. And his name was Gordarkel. If you haven't heard, Gordarkel was the winner of the two most recent Drawkian Empirical Jousts, the national tournament of jousters in Drawkland. And of course, he was the obvious first choice to be selected to participate in the Judean Royal Joust. Unfortunately, he is not being given any special treatment, but he has admitted he doesn't mind much. He's been placed in Group He, competing with Sir Man of Thislistiscrap of Sasil Hangug (what a strange realm), Sir Poik Deni of Jarwel, and Aloys de Narbonnes of hosts Judah.
The coat of arms is the one his city itself created for itself, as a tribute to the sometimes green seas and the crescent moon, to which there used to be a cult dedicated. Gordarkel declined an offer for a custom crest.

Image
NAME: HEATHALJER
Place of Origin: Sadeg, Iarocavet
Occupation: Soldier
Group: ב (Bet)
Bio: A noted military scholar of Iarocav of late, Heathaljer was born in outer Sadeg, in the good old lands of Iarocavet. Although he was born into a poor family on the outskirts of town, the young boy aspired to be a knight and fight for Drawkland, which had been at war during his infancy and finally united once he began observing the world around him. Of course, it was a struggle for him to be accepted into the army, but he eventually succeeded. He trained his hardest, and became very proficient in jousting, merely by accident. This talent caught the eye of Supreme Drawkionel Iarocav, and so Heathaljer became somewhat of Iarocav's prodigy in the next few years, which is why he made the shortlist to Judah. He's been drawn into Group Bet, competiting against the likes of Sir Buttkiss of Dreamland of Sasil Hangug, Tarahal of Yesopalitha, and Sir Harold Uinl of Jarwel.
His coat of arms is simple, as he designed it himself when Iarocav knighted him. He wanted a single symbol that meant bravery, sacrifice, and purity, hence the red lion on a plain white background.

Image
NAME: NOAH of the NORTH
Place of Origin: ???, Iarocavet
Occupation: Hermit
Group: ז (Zayin)
Bio: Finally in our list comes the relative unknown to both us and the other jousters and supporters, Noah of the North. Noah is allegedly a hermit who lives out in the northern reaches of Iarocavet, having very little communication with people at all, except to trade for items he needs. On rare occasions, however, he shows a massive skill on horseback and with lance, and has swept the few tournaments he has entered. Rumor has it Iarocav himself met the man in the northern pine forests and jousted him in the wilderness. Nobody knows who won, and good luck getting Noah to talk.
When Noah was informed by the administrating body of the Judean Royal Joust that it was highly suggested, nigh mandatory that he submit a coat of arms, and that all of his fellow Drawkians had submitted theirs, he improvised. Instead of asking for someone to help or to go to a nearby smith or artist, he simply ripped the paper out of the messenger's hand, turned it on its backside, and drew the "crest" you see on the left using some mud at his feet. As you can see, it's his name, misspelled, in old Drawkish, along with an upward arrow, which is assumed to mean "North," and for some reason, the number 7, as it's shown in the oldest of ruins and texts. What this means, nobody knows. Likely that he did not wish to submit a crest.

Distributed via horseback and the swiftest messengers, on a one-per-town scroll basis.

From the ledgers of the Chronicler of Jerusalem

Ari ben Yitzchak ben Yehudah
Born at Jerusalem
Holds titles of Prince of Judeans and Marshal of Judea
Ari is King Yitzchak’s second son. Having three sons, King Yitzchak divided their focuses. Benyamin, as heir to kingdom, was made a politician. Eliezer, being the most dutiful, was given to his grandfather, the Kohen Gadol, to be tutored in the ways of the Kohanim. Ari, as the largest of his brothers, was raised to be a warrior. He has gone on many campaigns in his father’s service, including the pacification of Syria, the vassalization of Cyprus and most recently in campaign against the Alans. Last year King Yitzchak organized a jousting competition in honor of his birthday which drew challengers from Persia and the distant Norse lands, a fierce competition where Ari managed to claim victory and be named champion. Because of his social status, as well as his history as champion, Ari will bypass the group stage of the joust and proceed directly to the main tournament.

Aloys de Narbonnes
Born at Sea
Holds title of Captain of Nazoreans
Aloys and his sister, Aliénor, are the last remnants of a near extinct Occitan noble house. The periodic warfare with a neighboring nobleman over some ancient feud that no one could remember the start of was finally concluded when the rivals armies besieged their father’s castle. A few of their father’s most trusted men and personal cleric smuggled their mother out of the castle and spirited her away to a ship out of Montpellier. Less than a week later the cleric took ill from an infected injury and succumbed. Two days out from the ship tieing up in Ostia near Rome, their mother gave birth to twins and died in the process. The few knights who remained entrusted the babes to Bishop Daniel, a Roman Catholic priest from Jerusalem, who took them in and returned to the Holy Land with them. Though the children were raised by the Bishop as their guardian in Jerusalem, King Yitzchak eventually came to occupy the role of surrogate father to the twins. Several years ago, he proposed to King Yitzchak to enlist a body of Christian Knights into his service for the purpose of maintaining the King’s peace and protecting Christian sites in the Holy Land, an idea the King embraced and immediately led to the formation of the Nazorean Guard.

Eliyyahu ben Amnon
Born at Hebron
Holds title of Master of the Temple Gate
Eliyyahu ben Amnon is the son of a Kohein and among the more zealous of Judea’s notables. Though his father had hoped that Eliyyahu would also take to the priesthood, he eventually found that Eliyyahu was far too combative to be suited to the regimens and services administered by the Kohanim. Instead, his father turned him to the path of being a religious warrior and found him service in the Temple Guard. Like many in Jerusalem, he leans heavily to the Kohanists and is one of the leading members of the conservative Zealot faction which disapproves of the King’s allowance for members of other faiths in the Holy Land. He would not have even participated in the Joust except that his father urged him to on the basis of earning glory and demonstrating God’s favor for the followers of his word.

Yael bat Yitzchak ben Yehudah
Born at Jerusalem
Holds title of Princess of Judeans
Yael is the King’s stubborn, headstrong daughter. Early on, she learned that even with her father’s indulgence she would constantly face obstacles on account of her sex. Instead she learned to work a more subtle means of controlling those around her. She started with the children of the palace servants, getting them to run errands and gather information for her. As she grew older, her network of spies grew further and further, eventually bringing her to the notice of her father’s spymaster, Barak ben Boaz, who began grooming her as his successor. She has been noted to have a quiet steel to her, and though she holds no official authority many of her father’s men obey her orders as though they were issued by one of her older brothers or her father himself. Although it was somewhat against her father’s wishes, she has signed up to participate in her father’s joust and King Yitzchak can’t bring himself to tell her to quit.

Abd Allah al Ammar
Born at Ruwaished
Holds title of Mamluk of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem
Abd Allah is one of the slave-soldiers in the Grand Mufti’s service. He was born in the Transjordan deserts and was sold into slavery at a young age. His rigorous training made him completely loyal to whoever his master is, and a decade ago that became the Grand Mufti when Abd Allah was gifted to him. He has risen high with the social ranks of Jerusalem’s Muslim community and has brought great honor to his master, who has rewarded him with two wives from the Grand Mufti’s maiden slaves. As a way to gain further honor for his master, the Grand Mufti has commanded him to enter into the joust to compete against others.

NOTE: Slight correction from previous cutoff. Although Dedric the Mighty (QAD) had received like number of lances to Jem Boerne (COS), Jem Boerne had also unhorsed Dedric the Mighty to win the match, therefore Dedric should not have received any flags for his performance. This has been corrected in this post.

The two soldiers stood their night watch at the western gate of Jerusalem, controlling entry into the city. They could see hippodrome from their post, and the joust became a natural conversation for them to carry on.

“I think the princess was hoping to perform much better than she has been,” commented Avishai.

“Don’t sell her so short,” replied Shaked. “Everyone in her group has but a single win. She might have done better, but she is not a trained warrior like Prince Ari or Captain Aloys. If she wins against William Weresing tomorrow, she enters the main tournament.”

“True enough. And it’s not like Weresing has been performing greatly in his own right. Besides, I shudder to think what would happen if Princess Yael heard us speaking of her like this.” The two guards laughed.

“Honestly, I was expecting more from Aloys. He’s the father of the sport in Judea.”

“And damn fine at it. He has only been just barely edged out by Gordarkel in this last match, and he did hit on every pass against sir man, even if the first was a glancing blow and did not break his lance.”

“Fair enough. What about the Master of the Temple Gate?” asked Shaked.

“That pious bastard? I suppose he’s doing alright, though in all honesty I wouldn’t mind if the Guayabalense prince knocked his block off,” replied Avishai.

“You would cheer for a foreign prince over one of your own?”

“For Eliyyahu ben Amnon, I’ll make an exception. I’ll root for the Abd Allah al Ammar if I must. The mamluk at least has the good grace to keep his judgements of others to himself and he’s performed better than the greater half of the jousters out there. If he is not second in his group, he will likely be of those who get entered to fill the remainder.”

“How true. Look alive, someone approaches,” Shaked warned. The two soldiers came to attention until the approaching figure revealed themselves to be Yesopalithan. Avishai opened small door and allowed them to pass into the city. He looked over at Shaked.

“There is something about these Yesopalithans that gives me an unease. Their skin is pale beyond anything I’ve ever seen.”

“More pale than the Hibernian prince we saw come through on pilgrimage?”

“Far and again. And it’s not just the paleness. There’s something… cold about them. I like it not.”

“I cannot believe that Captain Aloys was defeated,” said Sir Ector, a Nazorean of Saxon descent said.

“I hardly believe it myself,” replied Sir Arnau. “There are few finer horsemen in the kingdom that Captain Aloys. But to be struck twice in the head, I fear more for his health than his pride.”

“A fair statement, Ser. It just baffles me that Captain Aloys was out performed, especially by the like of Eliyyahu ben Amnon. He’s almost as bad an agitator against the King’s peace as Guy de Loimbard. Sir Butkiss has performed well. Hopefully he will bring some humility to the bastard.”

“Indeed,” replied Sir Arnau. “I am quite excited to see the Prince joust again. He was quite superb at the King’s birthday joust last year. I wonder how he will perform against this Gordarkel. The man has performed quite well in Group He. He may give the Prince quite the ride.”

“Well, I’ll be dropping my shekels on the Prince. Not sure if I can say the same for the Princess. She has much to learn about combat.”

“If that is true, I will certainly not say so myself.”

“True. True. What about the Moselman?”

“The Mufti certainly earned back his coin on the purchase of the mamluk. Abd Allah al Ammar is a hard man. Sir Man has performed about as well as the mamluk. It will be a joust to watch, that is for sure.”

Avishai and Sheked once more found themselves standing watch at the city gate. As was often happening throughout Jerusalem, the conversation turned to the events of the Joust.

“Prince Ari certainly gave the Drawkian what for, didn’t he,” commented Avishai.

“As predicted,” replied Sheked. “I only made five lousy shekels off the bet. None of the gambling houses would give you any better odds than two for one on the Prince.”

“Can you blame them? He was the champion last year. And see the results today. A single hit and the Drawkian fell from his horse.”

“True. The mamluk had similar results against Sir Man. Knocked him clear off his horse on the third tilt.”

“I saw both men being tended by Nazorean physicians. Their injuries seemed pretty bad.”

“I hear that Sir Buttkiss was in a similar state after being unhorsed by that bastard gate guard.”

“Hopefully the Drawk Lord will knock him flat on his pompous ass.”

“The Princess certainly got some of her own back today. Lord Büzzlemuffin took plenty of good hits. The Princess as well, but I think she has finally gained her sense of what mounted combat means. She might emerge a true force to be reckoned with against Qadda Knight.”

“Who will you put your shekels on between the Prince and the Mamluk?”

“The Prince, naturally. Good as the Mamluk is, the Prince knows more of combat than the Mamluk. It will be no contest.”

“Oh, I think it will be a contest. And it will be one to watch for certain.”

Prince Ari sat at the table of the small family room of David’s Citadel as Yael reclined on a cushion. She groaned at the soreness of her entire body.

“I always knew combat would hurt, I just always thought I could handle it better than this,” Yael complained.

“Don’t feel so bad, dear sister,” replied Ari. “You have far and away out performed even the greates optimists anticipations towards your participation in father’s joust. By the by, you did well to knock that arrogant bastard from his horse. He has certainly deserved it.”

“It felt good. Eliezer is none to pleased.”

“Our brother is too uptight, and quite wedded to the Zealot faction. Of course he wouldn’t approve.”

“How about you though? You haven’t lost even one bout in all of our father’s tournament.”

“Well,” Ari demured, “I was exempted from the group stage. And that Foo Ack Swish was no easy competitor. You are right though. I am doing well. I was suprised that Aloys did not advance. He practically invented the sport in Judea.”

“Aelinor has been tending to his wounds, and our eldest brother has been helping her with that.”

“They are practically family to us.”

“Indeed. Benyamin and Aelinor are particularly close. It is a good thing they are practically siblings or else her husband would be quite unhappy with the times they spend together.”

“I shudder to think it.”

“I can’t believe you let yourself be unhorsed,” Aloys laughed at Ari as they sat in the King’s Box. “And by a woman?”

“Yes, yes, I was unhorsed by a woman. But then, there are two women who will tilt for the title of champion. I think perhaps our opinions of women will need to change.”

“Your sister certainly has performed quite well this entire tournament. Unhorsed two opponents, including that bastard gate guard. Must say, it is a little more assertive than I am used to seeing of her.”

“Indeed. She is more the spider than the bull. She has taken to the sport quite well though. She might just become a proper warrior besides.”

“Maybe. So what happened during that joust?”

“No idea. I have never taken a hit like that before. That woman is… something else. Then again, so are all of these Yesopalithans. You speak to anyone in Jerusalem and they will tell you that they give an unease.”

“You want I should look into them? I can have my men-”

“No. If we need to, I will use my sister’s network. For now, leave them be.”

“If you say so, Ari.”
