Mountainasia Gives Ceni Hard Time, Hosts Prevail

Ceni Stats Leaders
Pts: Ace Stargazer (22)
Rebs: Orion Darkstar (10)
Asts: Neil Halcyon (11)
PRat: Neil Halcyon (8.5)
Ceni was made to work in its first ever IBC outing - with Mountainasia, a fellow unranked team, giving the hosts a big scare in the first matchday of the International Basketball Champions. Despite a late fourth quarter surge, the hosts were able to move forward in the game, earning their first win in the sport. They next face second-seeded Saint Kanye (and highest-ranked second seed) on the second matchday in what should be a quite tough match for the hosts and debutants.

The first quarter was fairly close, with only a three-point shot by Neil Halcyon enough to maintain Ceni's lead over the unranked team. Mountainasia, their players wearing jerseys without names on them (for some crazy reason) and a computer glitch meaning that one couldn't see the players' names all too well, mounted an aggressive game, with a great number of personal and technical fouls giving Ceni lots of free points off free throws.

That strategy seemed to work for them, though, as it produced results against a bit nervous Cenian defense, with manager Lauren Vox hoping that a switch from nervous center Benjamin Espinoza to the more experienced Orion Darkstar would help a bit on the defensive end. That it did, and the Cenian defense began to pick up a bit, as the offense sprung forward in the second quarter to extend Ceni's lead in the game to eight points.

Despite the excellent shooting performance of Ace Stargazer, who led scoring with twenty-two points, the unnamed players on the Mountainasia team mounted a capable defense, led by their captain, who started off with a zone defense to double team Stargazer and prevent him from scoring as much. Originally this did not have much effect as the Cenian team was able to simply keep moving forward with the offense using a classic form of the wheel offense to keep the ball rotating around.

Mountainasia thought it might regain the advantage in the third quarter of the game, using its height as an advantage, and they quickly built up a lead of sixteen points to ten by the first half of the third quarter. However, Ceni, despite their shortness, had the advantage in the wheel offense and their quickness was able to stymy Mountainasia in order to come back from the deficit and win the period, extending the lead.

Vox made the decision to rest key starters in the fourth half as point guard Neil Halcyon was replaced by Kiana Ke'Sandrhan. Although she played competently, she was no match for the best-rated player for Ceni on the court, who notched the most assists as well and was crucial for his positioning and three-point shots. However, Obran Camasau and Ashur El-Amin both did well, scoring six points apiece.

The defense in the third quarter seemed just good enough to stop Mountainasia from winning, as the unranked side decided to use their tallest players to further get the advantage on the Cenian team as they grabbed a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter to give them a better chance at making the game go forward, however the points gap was too large to surpass.

Ceni learned several things from the match. It had to run up the offense whenever it could. It had to be resolute at the defense. And it had to make substitutions with a clear eye for how things would go in the end. All of those lessons will be useful lessons when playing Saint Kanye as well as the other nations in Ceni''s group. There will be a lot of pressure on Ceni to perform well as the hosts, with the growing numbers of fans now clamoring to get a piece of the action and support their home team.

Enzo DiDomenico : 6 Days, 6 Movies - Week 3, August

Enzo DiDomenico

Good day to all of you. It has been about a month since the last 6 Days, 6 Movies article was up. It was mostly because of personal reasons, specifically need to take a break from working on my doctorate thesis in film, as some may have already heard, and also to find good movies to watch. Fortunately when I came back there were enough interesting movies on theatres to watch. With that being said, here are my takes on them. Enjoy!

Monday. The Necromancer
Directed by : Alexandre Dawkins
Produced by : Storm Charland, Mikael Asperup
Written by : Michel Desplats
Starring : Cal Barry (Eric Leblanc), Laurent Giroux-Turbide (Diablo), Nicole Turbide-Bergeron (Dr. Waller), Yekaterina Seo (Adelaide Kim), Ik Hyun Oh (Luke Svichensky)
Description : Sworn to provide and protect the balance between the living and the dead, the Necromancer Corps has existed for millenia. Its first recruit in 20 years, Eric Leblanc (Cal Barry), is the first human to join in over a century. With greater matters in focus, the Necromancers rarely care about the humans, who have always caused troubles in attempting to break through the barriers between those two worlds, thus giving them no respect. But Eric, a muscular, talented and well stoned son of a Moodang (Note: Korean term of a shaman / priest), may be the Corps' only hope when the deadly foe called Diablo threatens to amalgamate the world for good.
Review : As you probably all know, I am a huge fan of the Necromancer comic book series. Growing up as a child in Longeuil I read all about the series and how the barriers that we, as mortal beings experience, are being preserved while giving some leeway for those who desire it. So it was no surprise that I really looked forward to it. Unfortunately, it betrayed high expectations; Noisy, overproduced and with visually-assaulting graphics and barely-existing plot, The Necromancer turned out to be a waste of money and butchering of a rich, 50-year strong comics mythology. To say the least, I was very disappointed with director Dawkins after producing artistically controversial yet memorable movies in "Mutually Assured Childhood Destruction", "Estenian Incest" and "l'Atheisme/Atheism".

Tuesday. Inhwa
Directed by : Lawrence Cho
Produced by : Michaela Siwira, Sam Denison-Ramodien
Written by : Samantha Turner
Starring : Dong Hwa Park (William Beaudin-Chang), Mi Hwa Yoon (Dong Yoon Ha), Amanda Tyrell (Elisabeth Clarry), Maurice Rosewood (Geronimo S. Starblanket), Kendrick Chang (Joo Min Park)
Description : Lawrence Cho, the 2020 Archie Prize Winning-director, is back with a thriller, starring Dong Hwa Park and Mi Hwa Yoon. It is based on the actual events that took place in Jeonnam Inhwa Institute for the hearing-impaired, where deaf students of various ages were victimised by faculty members and outsiders over the mid-1980s. Mr. Beaudin-Chang, the newly appointed teacher, finds out about this and decides to fight for children's rights and expose the crimes with a human rights lawyer Dong Yoon Ha and undercover journalist Elisabeth Clarry. They soon discovers that the school's administration, faculty and even the police, prosecutors and Catholic church is covering up the crime, using bribes and lies to get their way into it. This leads to a very light sentence of only a year on initial proceedings. Vowing to stop this, the protagonists decide to file for IBI (Imperial Bureau of Investigation) investigation and the 2nd filing of the suit, to end the movie.
Review : I'm sure all of you have heard enough about how this movie and how it'll land at least 9 nominations on Archie Awards this February so I'll not talk about its excellent quality, style nor the actors' delivery. Instead, I'll talk about how effective this movie was, as a social expose. For those who know the Quebecois state, the nation's harsh stances on several crimes- sex crimes and interruption to proper investigation not the only ones being exposed on this movie- were possible and ultimately resulted by cases like that of Inhwa back in 1980s. The fight for the lost children of Inhwa Institute led to the IBI-led investigation with then-Crown Prince Pierre Henri in charge and eventual conviction of 48 animals. Out of them, 39 were tortured and executed, while the other 9 were castrated and branded, before being sent to lifetime confinement. Adding to that 3 generations of public servants involved in the case were fired and purged. It was not a small case at all. By taking up this magnanimous task of filming what has happened back hen, the author examined the state of our society, the values of what is right, and what we need to address the way Inhwa did. Bravo.

Wednesday. 49 / 51
Directed by : Bridget Yu Weon Kang
Produced by : Eduardo Choe-Guerrero, Cedric Kang
Written by : Enrico Sanvido
Starring : Jean-Jacques Gitnai (Pierre Latendresse), Adhemar Bergeron (Jean-Marc Latendresse), Lauren Ainslie (Katrina Bourcier), Carla Alonso (Carmen Seo), Alex Dmitridis (Marko Jurkic)
Description : If there were Capps and Montys in War of Great Montreal, there were the Latendresse brothers! Suave, charming and volatile, Pierre Latendresse and his degenerate brother Jean-Marc start to leave their mark on the Quebec City underworld in the 1960s. Using violence and business tactics to get what they want, the brothers orchestrate murders and clubs while running nightclubs and other forms of business. With Detectives Seo on their heels, the brothers continue their rise to the power and notoriety.
Review : Bridget Yu Weon Kang's one of the more likable directors in this century and he came back with another movie to prove his worth as a rising director in Quebecois film industry. The movie was very well done in artistic side of things from filming to character portrayals, while the plot was solid with very few holes- though it had few places where it could've improved. One thing I did not like about the film was its lackluster soundtrack though that could've been because of most other movies on this week's list here had at least very good soundtracks. Good job to Ms. Kang and hope she'll produce entertaining movies for many years.

Thursday. Drawkman: Rise of Cthulhu
Directed by : Ross McKean-Jarvis
Produced by : Marion Bordelais, Bridget Yu Weon Kang
Written by : Henri Harelimana-Bizeau
Starring : Yoon Jong Kim (Drawkman), Viktor Matsuev (Molchanov), Jerome Kweon Brassard (Cthulhu), Anita Cherniak (Cliff Spark), Bon Gu Yi (Adolphe Rundblad), Francois-Luc Champagne (Dr. Freeze)
Plot : The Vrubel Expanded Universe is back with its second of 3 Drawkman films, once again to directed by 45-year old Ross McKean-Jarvis. The fate of humanity is at stake when somewhere off the shores of San Llera, a mysterious creature wakes up from the hundred-year long sleep. The thousand-year old Cthulhu is not like any creature- its ability to dominate ground and underwater realms, as well as causing insanity on any human beings who sees him, is unheard of. As the fate of Multiverse hangs in thread, the Drawkman (Yoon Jong Kim) is forced to have the rest of Arkhamites to assemble to stop the ancient alien deity vowing to end the World for once and all.
Review : Well after the ultimate disappointment that was The Necromancer 3 days ago, I felt very worried about watching this movie. Fortunately it did not disappoint. The eye-popping, powerful sequel provided the same old cast of superheroes, with some additions and an even awesomer foe in Cthulhu. It's like August 15 Fireworks (Editor's Note : August 15 is the Quebec Day for those who don't know) or for younger audience, electronic music festivals in some southern playgrounds. Unfortunately, it could've improved had the movie not been overstuffed with such visual elements and little bit understuffed on plots and substance. I mean, tell us more about the background of Cthulhu and how it ended up on San Llera in first place! Otherwise it was good and no-nonsense.

Friday. А кто будет петь, если все будут спать? (Trans. 'Who will sing if everybody falls asleep?")
Directed by : Alexander Stahov
Produced by : Ilya Stahov, Marielle Billington
Written by : Rupert Kenney-Bothwick, Maria Lyssova
Starring : Bon Gu Yi (Sergei Kim), Viktor Matsuev (Alexander Lysenko), Rodney Wilson (Vassily Tikhomirnov), Ryan Desjardins (Cedric Billington-Buchanan), Mikhail Lyssov (Kiril Ezhov), Maria Lyssova (Adelaida Ezhova)
Description : The legendary Novopetrogradian-Schottic director is back with the latest film to set on screen, as he pays homage to his friends and native homeland under communist rule in 1980s. The movie talks of the life of legendary rocker Sergei Kim, who in spite of his untimely death almost a quarter of a century ago, remains a legend and golden standard of what stands as Novopetrogradian rock. From his childhood days in Kirov National Arts Academy to the formation, rise and success of the band "Samidzat", until the very tragic and unforeseen death in 1990, the film addresses story of not only his life, but also the era of Perestroika, and its artists and culture.
Review : Nothing much to say on this film. A true artistic masterpiece with great plot, accuracy to detail and of course great music. Excellent job by Stahov. Wish it came up on more theatres, but at least the ones screening it were packed af.

Saturday. Xi vs. Kylx - Death of Justice
Directed by : Zach Ruwart
Produced by : William Shin, Lucie McKendrick
Written by : Pest Manson-Julien
Starring : Xi Foureleven (Xi), Jean-Jacques Rioux (Kylx), Jeremiah Dea (Rex Hunter), Yoon Mi Kim (Martha Laine), Feliks Arturovic (Reggie Sonier), Ariane Martineau (Marine-Holly Tremblay / Scarlet Storm)
Description: Zach Ruwart, the so-called nutjob of the Quebecois cinema world, is back with the second Vance Universe Series film, with something even bigger and more With the appearance of a superhero, the one who possesses unverified abilities similar to a god, the people across the Multiverse fear for their lives. The merciless vigilant of Gotham, Xi decides to collide and challenge the so-called messiah of Metropolis named Kylx. While the whole world argues on what type of hero we needs on this world, as they fight, the very new danger arises into the world...
Review: This movie's hard to say much about it. Its visual effects were impeccable and all three superheros involved looked brilliant. A special shout out to everybody on cast for doing their best on role. They came in right time, did actions very well and clearly had different direction from the past few movies with the superheroes to their like. The same could not be said for the incoherence in plot, however, as the film was barely watchable in one setting. They made sense when in fragments, but not as an overall piece. The lack of proper explanation to some themes and evident plot holes didn't help as well.

Kirishima wins opening match of IBC 20 in style. Highest scoring team on Day 1

Kirishima 103–59 Bonapartium
@ Whitehaven International Arena
32|27|26|18 | 103 | Kirishima
14|10|20|15 | 59 | Bonapartium

Last night was a huge win for the Lightspeed as they took on the team from Bonapartium. Kirishima no longer happy to just compete is trying take advantage of various opportunities to become a powerhouse. Now one of the most important thing to do when trying to establish dominance is to make a statement as early as possible.

The first half was stifling for the opposition as the Lightspeed were active on D contesting shots and getting into the passing lanes. Which they incorporated in their fast paced transition game. Yuna Akashi bent on remaining the scoring ace of the team came out to a hot start in the first quarter but the star of the story was Kyou Tsukishima who drilled back to back threes in Quarter 1 to set the tone. Kirishima set that pace early and never let the opposition back in. Final Score 103-59. After the game Coach Riko Aida had some words.

We wanted to start slow and make sure that we play proper. We have a few new pieces and I want to make sure they fit well in my system. Tsukishima is a natural but she needs time to get use to set plays. The Plan is to go deep in this edition, nothing less.

Patria Poble Pupusas vs Marano Flood, an oral history

Recently, in the San League Basketball playoffs, the nation watched an incredible series between Patria Poble Pupusas and Marano Flood in the Divison Patrian finals. Here is an oral history of the events:

Part 1: Prelude

Plutarco Ramires, Marano Flood Owner - Nobody expected us to do very well coming into the season, not even our fans. I mean, besides Antoni, we kind of had a band of misfits. But we came through, Amir [Marano Flood coach} did a great job with our boys; they really developed a terrific chemistry. And we found ourselves in the playoffs, as the third seed.

Jan Viktorio, Broadcaster - I was surprised as anyone that the Flood reached the playoffs. But the more I watched them towards the end of the season, the more I saw how dangerous they could be. They had Ferra at the point - he is just a hound defensively - they had Mayor, they had some shooting with d'Eern and Romero, of course Pin-Pin at center. They were never a bad team.

Amir Rolado, Marano Flood Head Coach - We were starting to play really well together, everything was kind of coming together right at playoff time.

Viktorio - Of course, the Pupusas were an elite team. They had Atualo Vela, probably the best player in the country right now... they finished with the best record in the league and rightfully so. They were an elite team.

Marco Vas, Patria Poble Pupusas Guard - Coming into the playoffs, we were on cloud nine. We were playing some great basketball, it was a load of fun.

Teo Pinoch ("Pin-Pin"), Marano Flood Center - In the first round, we were drawn against Pioneras d'Frontera, a really good team. We were the three seed I think. Anyways, game 1, I had some struggles. I mean, missing my first nine shots type of struggles. But short-term memory, you know? I blocked a guy, did my finger wag, my confidence was back. I went back down the court, made a layup. After that, I barely remember what happened, but I started to play well.

Lleo el-Sisi, Pioneras d'Frontera Head Coach - All of a sudden, Pinoch starts going off. He was my biggest worry heading into the series because we had no one to match his length, but I was happy because we'd contained him so far. We weren't containing him anymore.

Viktorio - Pinoch started to play like Ganchana in his prime, that good. Pioneras played a really good game, they would win 95% of the time, but not that day.

Pinoch - We're up 1-0, great. Next up, we play game two, they punch us in the mouth, win by 7. Game 3, I come back.

Viktorio - Meanwhile, Patria Poble is dominating, they've won their first two games by double digits, Vela is scoring 30 a game, all the stuff you'd expect.

El-Sisi - In the end, I was right. Pinoch played terrifically in the series, he was our downfall. Our guys played 100%, but Teo - a guy I have a lot respect for - he played 1000%.

Pinoch - I had this thing going on, it wasn't quite every other game, but I would have a game where I was unstoppable, then an off day, then two more when I play really well. Game 3, Game 4 I played to the best of my ability. Can't count the rebounds in those games, we win those two. I'm off in game 5, they pull it to 3-2, but then I'm back on and we win the series. (Laughing) Most players will be like 'oh, it was a team effort, I couldn't of done with without the guys around me.' Not me. I carried us those games.

Rolado - Ya, that's Teo. But he's right, not to invalidate the terrific performances from the rest of the team, but Teo took us on his back in that series.

Fidel Murillo, Marano Flood Guard (Played 0 minutes during the playoffs) - I couldn't care less about my playing time. We were in the conference finals!

Vas - We dominated Sud-est Summit, we we're confident as could be. Marano was the team next up.

To be continued...

International Basketball Championships XX

Abaja goes 2-0 after 75-68 victory

- By Willis Segoso & Benedict Mufüssa

New Gelderland, a team who had lost to Cosumar 65-81, has received another loss to the Abaja Lions. With the Lions on with their second victory, head coach Yuhan Anekwé had other words to say tonight. "Well, I have to say, our defense so far has been pretty tight. Our offense is starting to click. However, there is still room for improvement. We must keep pressing and pressing so that we can win more games. We are already off to a good start, but that doesn't mean to start slacking." During the first quarter, Pápá Mouyre (SF) started lighting it up. So did Jacob Nessal (SG) and Armani Welch (PG). They were making many shots, and the three of them caused many disruptions on defense. Armani Welch (PG) got a rebound and passed it up to Jacob Nessal for an and-one play. After that, Joseph Olu (C) got back to back blocks on a New Gelderland SF. Jola Nicholson (PF) and Náná Mdamnbe (PF) also got some blocks. After just the first quarter, the Lions had a total of 5 blocks on the New Gelderland squad. In the second quarter, pretty much the same happened. Calvin Anelé (SG), who had a quiet night this game, started off the quarter with a three point shot to put Abaja up 21-18. Then Pápá Mouyre (SF) got a steal, and took it to the house. The New Gelderland Center then responded with an and-one dunk, after Jacob Nessal (SG) tried to wrap him up to slow him down, but that didn't work. A few plays later, A New Gelderland PG stripped Armani Welch (PG) who did a windmill jam on the other end of the court. With 5 minutes left in the quarter, Joseph Olu (C) had a putback dunk after a Vincent Osu miss. The New Gelderland SG drove into the basket for an and-one play. Náná Mdamnbe (PF) then got another block, and slammed it in on a Calvin Anelé assist. The half soon ended, and the Abaja Lions had a total of 6 blocks in the first half.

At halftime, reporters were talking about the swatting defense of Abaja, getting 6 blocks and forcing 5 turnovers, though they had 4 themselves. The Lions led New Gelderland 41-33. In the third quarter, however, it was all about New Gelderland. In the third quarter alone, they scored 22 points, and only giving up 11. New Gelderland had a total of 4 dunks in the third quarter, and forced 3 turnovers. The Lions had some trouble shooting, and Jacob Nessal (SG) was only 1/4 from the field in the third quarter. A New Gelderland SG blocked a potential dunk by Pápá Mouyre, then the Center rebounded it and passed it up to his point guard for the finish. Head coach Yuhan Anekwé wasn't so pleased with the performance in the third quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Abaja was losing to New Gelderland 52-55. However, in the fourth quarter, the Lions started to turn thing up, scoring 23 points and only giving up 13. It was this play that made all the Lions fans jump from their seats. In the game, and at home. After a monstrous block by Jola Nicholson, he got the rebound, and passed it up to Pápá Mouyre. There was this one New Gelderland SG that he had to beat. As the SG tried to block his shot, Mouyre posterized him, which caused the poor guy to fly back 5 or 6 feet. It was also an and-one play. The Lions fans had their hands on their heads, they were in disbelief. Pápá Mouyre had a monstrous game, but boy, that was nasty. With 4 minutes left in the game, the Lions defense came back. Jacob Nessal (SG) got a steal and ran it down the court. He did a euro-step to get past a New Gelderland SF and scored for 2. Abaja was now up 68-60 with just 3 minutes left. New Gelderland tried to get a comeback going, but their shots wouldn't fall consistently. With 22 seconds left, Abaja lead 73-68. Many believed the game was already done. A New Gelderland SG missed a three points shot with 18 seconds left. They fouled Damian Marakwo (SG) who made both of his free throws. New Gelderland tried to make one last shot, but they missed it as well. Abaja's next opponent is New Edom, who lost to Banija 65-81. This could be another victory for the Abajans, as New Edom is 0-2. Abaja finished off with 7 blocks and 7 steals in the game.

Hectic. Tense. Anxious.

These are words that would describe the Vangaziland Royals' style of play in their game against Valladares.

"There was an electric buzz out there", Hectare Yulssen told reporters after the game. "It was an extreme pressure, one we had to fight. We had to reign in our anxiety and slow down the tempo."

This was a game that seemed like it could have gone either way. The Royals started hot and led the first run. Handsen heated up quickly and Knucks added a few from the post. Valladares hit a few key shots and took the lead for awhile.

This was why several of the players and even the coach saw this as such a tense game.

"It felt like we were going to lose this one, even back in the third quarter", said coach Tomasson. "But our guys showed they can fight nerves, rust, stage fright... And we showed we could fight against a talented team.

Valladares is ranked 12th for IBC 20.

The Royals retook the lead early in the fourth quarter. Assistant coach Kate Foyelson stepped up and did what she is becoming known for. Once again she helped the Royals secure a victory with her late game playbook.

"It's something we've been working on since she got here", Yulssen said. "I'm becoming more comfortable running her plays. The others are getting familiar with it."

The plays are designed to control the clock and create space usually off of screens. When you get the ball to someone like Ironwrought, Manny Battle or Fulborg, there is a good chance they may drive through the paint. Then that person could pass out to a shooter like Sokol or Handsen if they don't have the easy two. There was also always the chance to reset up top to Overson or Yulssen at point. The offense was very fluid and left room for many options.

Chris Ironwrought led scoring with 21 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He seems to be fitting right into the starting lineup. Yulssen contributed 8 assists and 2 steals. Knucks had a decent start with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Tom Gravu went 0-4 and just couldn't seem to find anything.

Sarah Overson pitched in 8 points and 6 assists. "It was really a team game", she told reporters. "We pass a lot, that's our style."

Frank Hurcle came off the bench at center and added 11 points and 3 blocks. His defensive presence in the post may have slowed down Valladares just enough to let the Royals sneak by with the win.

"I don't mind my new role coming off the bench", Hurcle said before the game. "I'm still useful out there."

THE KARDASHIA KIBITZER

IBC 20: SURGE SURVIVE HOSTS, GO 2-0

by Ray Wright

Image

CENIAL - The St. Kanye Surge national basketball team entered the second game of the 20th International Basketball Championships group stages against the hosts Ceni Snakes, hoping to display the same intensity as they did when they disposed of the Fluvique Golden Boys, 96-66, yesterday. The Snakes themselves wanted to put up a good show for the home crowd, riding high on a 85-78 victory over Mountainasia. But various errors from both sides meant lowered scoring production; the Cenians only scored 61 today. The Kanyeans scored 62, reserve center Lester Smith being the one to bail them out in a wild finish.

The first quarter ended a decent 21-17 in favor of the Kanyeans, who were wearing their black alternates for this game. But the second quarter was, to paraphrase St. Kanye's assistant coach Bernard Foley, a "stinker", with the Surge and Snakes both shooting below 30%, making just a dozen points apiece, and combining for eleven turnovers (six for the Snakes, five for the Surge).

The poor performance of the Surge continued into the third quarter, with sharpshooters James Blackwell and Frederic Trichet missing many easy shots and being a combined 5-for-15 in field goals. Meanwhile, Ace Stargazer and Wes Jarik of the Snakes put on a show, accounting for 14 of the hosts' 18 points in this quarter, enabling them to snatch the lead, 46-47 off a Jarik three with 0:25 remaining.

Fresh legs entered the court for both teams in the fourth. 7'3" Surge giant Jason Morrigan made two straight dunks, forcing a foul on one. College standout Philip Lomax of the Snakes made a four-point play, a three from beyond the line coupled with a foul from Darrell Gatson. The two teams were neck-and-neck, tied at 59 with five seconds remaining, when Cenian Javier Aiza beat two Kanyean defenders for a layup to put his team ahead. Out of timeouts, the Surge quickly ran the ball to the other end of the court, with Blackwell throwing up a desperation three from almost halfcourt. It hit the rim and missed. The mostly Cenian crowd at Cenial Pavilion started to cheer, but abruptly stopped.

Blackwell was fouled by Stargazer while shooting.

Blackwell missed the first of his three free throws. A faint cheer came out from the crowd. He calmly sank his second, cutting the lead to one, 60-61. The Kanyean co-captain appeared to pause for a moment, likely to concentrate, before launching the third free throw. It bounced off the rim and out, and just as the home crowd were about to rise from their seats, up jumped Lester Smith, beating the Cenian rebounders, flicking the ball into the rim as time expired. This time, it was the 1,265 Kanyeans' turn to celebrate. Smith ran across the court screaming and pounding his chest like a gorilla.

"Yes! Two down, three to go", Trichet said, referring to the number of groupmates they still have to face. Trichet was the second-highest Kanyean scorer, with ten points; Blackwell led with thirteen. Stargazer had 16 points in the losing effort for the Snakes. They face the also perfect Silvacometopia tomorrow; the Surge will face winless Mountainasia. "Never getting cocky", said Kanyean head coach Paulie Brewster. "We're 2-0, they're 0-2, doesn't matter. Anything can and will happen. One thing's for sure. We won't be putting up another stinker tomorrow."

Electrumites off to a rocky start

As many pundits expected, after just two matches, the Electrumites are feeling the pressure. It's no surprise why they are feeling the pressure: A new team, a new coach, a vast amount of inexperience and big shoes to fill has created the perfect storm as the Electrumites faltered against The Sword Bloke, a team that was supposed to disappear off the face off the earth, 65-77. The team's bitter disappointment was evident in Paula Hobson's second press conference -- markedly different from her first press conference over their victory against United Vietussia, where despite the warnings from Coach Hobson that "the team had yet to prove, and that their real test will be against the other, more experienced nations," the media ignored them until today. Paula Hobson was more snappy and terse than usual in today's press conference, but thats agiven because of the circumstances.

Here is a transcript of Paula's press conference:

Gerry Bund: Gerry Bund, C7. Paula, I want to bring you back to the last press conference where you were confiden--

Paula Hobson: I wasn't confident. I told you that they still had a lot to prove.

Gerry Bund: Right. Anyways, what do you think was the main reason why you lost today, and what was the difference between that and when you won against United Vietussia?

Paula Hobson: Okay. We lost because we missed some key shots, and we were just blocked too many times. Overall it was a poor performance and I expected more from the team. The difference? Well, the other team was more experienced. I wouldn't say we're terrible, just that we need to improve a lot more. It's a learning curve.

Gilbert Halliday: Halliday, Centralis Herald. Paula, you say learning curve, but the team has expectations to fill. Is it too little too late?

Paula Hobson: Not at all. They've had experience last IBC, and they made it to the Round of 16, so I'm expecting them to do so again. Let us not forget our debut team who needed to learn the ropes when they made it all the way to the Final. It can be done, and if the team's on board, it will be done.

Gilbert Halliday: Follow up, who was the MVP on the Electrumite side?

Paula Hobson: I liked the way Erickson was moving around, really controls the ball very well, which is crucial in motion, setting up those screens and making sure Greiner has the opportunity to score. I might promote him, but I need to give Bowen a chance to prove himself as well.

Natalie Leia: Natalie Leia, Prescott Tribune. You seem to be unsure about yourself a lot, given what you've just said in the past few minutes and the last press conference. Are you really ready to coach?

Paula Hobson: I am. Don't you remember I coached last edition as well?

Natalie Leia: That was unofficial.

Paula Hobson: I'm confident in my ability. I've coached for many seasons domestically. I've been under the helm of Warren Jefferson. Trust me. That's enough questions for now. Now we'll open questions to Ms. Greiner...

As you have read above, Paula Hobson is really feeling the heat. If the team does not shape up soon, then there will be consequences, and some are saying that another coach will be drafted from the NSCAA should Hobson not do the team justice in putting them through to the next round.

6 Bendicion 2 0 2 127 163 −36 0

OVERVIEW
If you remember quite a bit ago (which isn't that long), Drawkland first emerged, blinking, into the harsh sunlight of international sporting. And the International Basketball Championships 19, in Valladares, was the place that we fell into mediocrity. Or fair suckage. Whatever you'd like to call it.
Anyhow, the IBC is back for the historic 20th edition, this time held in Ceni. The question still stands whether Drawkland will make the fellow group members on a run for their money, or if Drawkland will actually make a splash in non-collegiate basketball. And that question will be a relatively tough one to answer. On one hand, we have a revitalized and hungry Drawkian team back on the courts, out in New Oxford, Ceni. On the other hand, they'll have to face the likes of Valanora, Abanhfleft, and Rennidan (they've already had to face Kaboomlandia). And unfortunately, they only have one go at each before the series launches to the playoffs.
In a situation of a single round robin group stage, you pretty much have to go undefeated to have a clear shot at making it through, even on a Top-2 advancing basis. And after two days of play, Drawkland's Net Corps is sitting at a mediocre-as-always 1-1 record.
Shocking.
So here's what you've missed, if you haven't been paying any attention over the past couple days (IT'S ON CHANNEL 2, PEOPLE):

vs KABOOMLANDIA
Drawkland had to face the powerful Kaboomlandia in their debut matchup. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. They're dead. Which is both correct and incorrect.
The match started unpredictably: Gerald Madison, the Drawkian center, lost the tip-off to Jorge Carpenter, who's only a shocking 5 inches shorter than Madison. Some fans had remarked that Carpenter almost looked like a Drawkian wearing the wrong jersey when he trotted onto the court. This gave the Kaboomlandian "Phoenixes" the advantage going into the start, going for a quick drive and scoring on a neat layup tossed in by Darren James. Brian Campbell grabbed a quick rebound and came in to score himself. And all that back-and-forth continued for pretty much the whole match, until a certain point early in the 3rd quarter.
It started when a ref called a foul on Clara Vandertrump, a Drawkian Forward. Apparently she'd fouled Phil Jenkins of the Phoenixes, when many Drawkian fans testified that she didn't and the ref was calling bullshit. Regardless, with Kaboomlandia at an already-dangerous 53-51 lead, the 2 nailed foul shots by Jenkins brought a 4-point gap into the laps of the Net Corps. And for the rest of the match, the Phoenixes simply matched the Net Corps point by point, eventually ending off with an 84-79 loss for the Drawkians.

vs BENEDICION
Now, we all know based on the recent World Bowl events that rankings count for nothing against good teams, but when the Net Corps headed down to play Benedicion, it well-expected that it'd be a blowout in our favor.
While blowout isn't the most accurate, we did have a bit of reverse situation in the game against Kaboomlandia. The tipoff was won by Madison (the older one), and Autumn Trallen scored a 3 right off the bat, to the delight of many Drawkian fans. The game would seem close to a bland analyst or to someone just reading by stats, but in reality it was anything but. The atmosphere was purely Drawkian, and the Net Corps' Pep Band drowned a lot of the Benedician cheers and excitement. The Drawkian hype simply swallowed the arena, and it's a true shock that Drawkland didn't just up and destroy the Benedician team. Some fans swear it was out of courtesy.

PREDICTIONS
Regardless, it would've been courteous to our placement in the group if we'd scored another goal or two, because currently Drawkland sits in 4th, with a -1 point differential, and behind Valanora, with the same record but a +16 PD. If Drawkland ever expects to get a playoff seeding, they'll have to kick it into high gear in the next 4 days. With the known badass Rennidan team coming up next and the current group heads Abanhfleft coming up after that, the challenge will be huge to overcome by the Net Corps.

Good luck to them! They're definitely gonna need it.

FAN WRITING FEATURE
Written by Jerod Harvis

So the Net Corps is back in Rushmore, this time a bit further east, in Ceni. There's been a lot happening there, amirite? Let's hope we don't suck. But lemme tell you about what happened to me in the game with the Kaboomers, as I call 'em.

So you know all the Drawkian have to generally fill in the stadium back-to-front, as we don't want to "inconvenience" the other team's fans by blocking their view even when sitting down. The stadium was packed, so we couldn't shimmy forward a few rows, so me and buddies were bumping up against the back wall of this college gymnasium.

So we were already salty. Then Kaboomlandia goes and wins the damn game, and so we're even more salty. We're leaving the gym, going out the back entrance because it was faster to get to our hotel that way, and then suddenly we run into some Kaboomlandians going that same way. My buddy Jim is already loose from drinking, and so when one of the Kaboomer fans hurls a chiding remark at us, Jim goes off his rocker and punches the guy. It became an all-out brawl between our groups, and the Cenian police had to get involved.

But you should've seen the look on that Kaboomlandian's face a second before Jim's fist knocked his jaw loose.

EDITOR'S NOTE: We'll be adding small fan stories to the bottom of most articles for IBC 20.

THE KARDASHIA KIBITZER

IBC 20 SPECIAL: SURGE TRIVIA ROUNDUP

by the Kibitzer Research Department

Impress chicks (or dudes, depending on your preference) at the sports bar with these interesting tidbits about your national basketball team.

  • Head Coach Paulie Brewster has such bad eyesight without his glasses that he once accidentally kissed goodbye his long-haired teenage son instead of his wife. Sean Brewster cut his hair short after the incident.
  • Assistant coach Bernard Foley has a twin brother, Bertrand, who owns several gas stations in the capital.
  • Marc Stevens, together with a childhood friend, won 10,000 Coinyes as participants of a kiddie "Amazing Race"-style TV show when they were seven.
  • Cedric Philips won't eat shrimp, because his grandmother told him in his youth that his animal spirit is in the form of a shrimp.
  • Jason Morrigan's first love wasn't basketball. He was a member of the middle school brass band before he was recruited to the team because of his height.
  • The night before a game, Mikael Larsson always sleeps wearing earphones playing reggae. Any reggae will do, he says.
  • Darrell Gatson played the first half-a-year of his college career wearing a jersey with "GASTON" on it. It was only fixed after the former benchwarmer filled in for an injured starter, dropped 50, and got noticed.
  • Darren Overton wears jersey number 22. He chose the number in high school because his favorite book is Catch-22.
  • Adrian Page is the only Surge player without an aunt. His father is an only child, and his mother has only one sibling, who's a priest.
  • Billy Forrest owns a couple of poodles named Bonnie and Clyde. He's the one who grooms the two when he's at home; his girlfriend, professional photographer Alena McLannister, takes care of them when he's away.
  • Frederic Trichet led his high school basketball team to a district championship in his senior year, on his mother's birthday. He graduated as the valedictorian two months later, on his father's birthday.
  • Bryan Warner's childhood room and bed were both circular. He liked the shape so much that he had his room and bed built circular again, in his new home.
  • James Blackwell's mother's favorite fruit is the peach, so she named him after the main character of "James and the Giant Peach".
  • Lester Smith buys or makes a cup of coffee after every game. He doesn't add cream or sugar if his team loses, which he says is to signify the bitterness of the loss.

Maybe it was the fact that, in a country where further education is still a luxury good, Afonso Drago has a bachelor degree in his back pocket made him O Professore but we might suppose his hairstyle, a courageous attempt by a united front of curls to defy the laws of gravity whilst pointing in all directions at once, did the trick. All had their eyes peeled on him as he seemed completely captivated by thought, stroking his chin.

”I think...”

Twelve heads moving forward, refusing to let him leave their field of attention.

”... if it would happen, we would of course need to win our other games and the Holy Philippines need to either beat both The Sword Bloke and Electrum, or just one of them with the other one dropping out against one of the other unrankeds.”
”That’s not that unlikely,” Zizu interrupted, trying to gather some hope.
”And we would have to beat The Sword Bloke by at least eleven points, or more if we get whipped by Electrum.”

Calm hazes and an almost sensible sentiment of acceptance that his IBC was nearly over. Beating Electrum, the opponent they would face in a handful of minutes seemingly out of reach.

”Oh for f’s sake,” Joao Vicente, the sole one not giving in to the general atmosphere, ”The Sword Bloke did it and so can we! Electrum is doubting, unsure with their new headcoach. They’re hesitating and we can push them under.”

Usually, this would amount to some ‘yeah’s’, not always as heartfelt but just to support their main man. But tonight...

”We even messed upon against the Philippines. Well, we...” Rui Dekotele sneered.

The silence in the dressing room amassed a painful edge.

”Not even the balls.” Joao muttered.
”What?!” was the reply from his younger teammate.
”Not even the fucking balls to speak your mind,” Joao got off his chest.

A lot of things happened at once. Both proverbial cornerstones of Os Bestas rose, their fists waving to one another. If it weren’t for colleagues keeping them around, those paws would’ve found something to land on.

”I dare you, mothafucker,” Joao screamed, ”I double-dare you to hit me!”

The punch had almost found a target if it weren’t for Luis Radeba entering the room. The manager could see his team, the collective meant to beat one of the most reputed sides on the world, piled up like a bunch of wild dogs and realised that tonight would be a difficult one.

Iljik Bei cried out with satisfaction and relief as the match ended, the crowd visibly showing its approval, now significantly larger than in the last match, many waving the yymean flag, with its red, white and green colours covering rows of seats. The different players grouped around their trainer, in celebration, as many spectators broke into song, although of questionable quality, but definitely with passion.

The match had been an uphill battle for the yymeans, with Purple Rabbits putting itself in the lead early, leaving Yymea with a steep result to recover after the first quarter, which it didn't manage to rebound in the second. In the third quarter, however, the yymean team began to score more frequently, putting itself in the lead, as the crowd, which had been rather disappointed during the rest of the match, became progressively more excited.

In the last quarter Yymea was firmly in the lead, and continued scoring, but the opposing team managed to pick itself back up, and pose a threat to the yymean team. After a few tense minutes, the yymeans banished all doubts regarding the result after the final second of the clock passed by.

Iljik Bei congratulated the players, but warned them about their mediocre performance at the start of the match. Still, he was very satisfied with his team, and got rather carried away in the bus back to the hotel, both in the way there, with the yymeans that had come to see the match, and inside the bus itself, in which nobody could stay still in their respective seats.

Once they reached the hotel and had calmed down, Iljik Bei reflected on the ammount of pressure they would have in the next match. The yymean media had once again given a lot of attention to the match, and the yymean public was now actively following the news regarding the basketball competition. If they lost the next match, they would most likely face backlash. He decided not to worry about it, and sleep.

A three-point play with two point seven second left by Peter Rasmussen lifted The Leaping Frogs to an emphatic 75-74 win over Beaverriver in Game 2 of the Group Stage of the Twentieth International Basketball Championships. It was a phenomenal effort by Rasmussen, who had twenty-eight of the team's seventy-five points in a concerted effort after a twenty-one point showing in Game One. Martin Beauchanon contributed twelve points and thirteen assists in another double-double performance for The Leaping Frogs.

Beaverriver seemed to figure out Chromatika's full-court press, and was figuring out how to score on it in droves, leading 18-16 after a quarter and 36-33 at half. It was then that Rasmussen took over, taking over the game from the low post and scoring sixteen of his points in the second half; he also had three steals. With Beauchanon and Rasmussen leading the way, The Leaping Frogs are making an impact this early part of the Group Stages. Fellow undefeated Saintland will be the next opponent for The Leaping Frogs. Handle them, and qualification seems to be in sight.

Frenline Delpha 84, Yesopalitha 63 - Flames look lost against Anacondas
Code: Select all
21 23 21 19 | 84 FRENLINE DELPHA
15 14 15 19 | 63 YESOPALITHA

A young Flames squad looked utterly lost against the Anacondas of Frenline Delpha, falling behind early and never recovering in a twenty-one point defeat in Game Two of the Group Stage. Freddy Alberts had seven blocks and severely disjointed the Flames' effort, who also committed twelve turnovers. Victoria Andersen led the Flames with eighteen points and nine rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the cohesion simply wasn't there at all.

"Very disappointing results today," admitted Coach Dickinson, "I expect more out of my players and today's effort was abysmal. We lost the boards by over fifteen rebounds and committed way too many turnovers. All this against a team that we needed to win against if we wanted any chance of proceeding onward."

When asked about what she would be looking for in the next game, Dickinson stated, "I just want us to have a clean game like the one we had against Valladares. Yes, we lost that game, too, but we played our kind of basketball and made Valladares work for it. That's not how we played against Frenline, and it definitely showed."

Yesopalitha will try to salvage the group stage, starting with Katawohan.

Valanora Times
Dragons Take Flight

The national team in basketball has once again been thrown into the fray of the International Basketball Championship, this being the twentieth edition the tournament. The Dragons come into the competition far from being a favorite of the tournament or even their group as they are a middling second seed. It is an unusual position for a Vanorian national team with the sporting history that our nation has and yet it is the position of the team as they play in the tournament, having had their first two games inside the group already. Unfortunately the matchup against the group's top seed has already transpired in the second game of the group and Abanhfleft showed exactly why the Dragons are lacking that same stature as the national teams of the nation do in other sports.

That being said, the Dragons did win their first game fairly handidly, which goes to show that there is a base there for the braintrust and the VSC to work on. While the Dragons may not be contenders in this edition of the tournament, even if they do manage to advance out of their group, that is not to make it seem as if they will never be contenders. When the Marauders first entered the footballing community, it took over a decade of attempts and persistent effort before they had become talented and respected enough for those in the international community to consider them a true threat in their groups both in Qualifying and in the Finals. With this being just the third tournament in a row that the Dragons have entered, it might even be fair to say that they are ahead of schedule in terms of development and stature in the basketballing community, when compared to the other sports.

If the Dragons are going to make an impact this tournament it will be because of their free flowing and hot shooting guards who are the backbone of the team. With most elves not growing taller than six foot three, the Dragons are almost always going to be at a disadvantage when trying to play inside the paint. Thus the basketballing culture in Valanora has had a heavy emphasis on guard play and as a result, the backcourt for the Dragons are quite the ballhandlers as well as able to score with the best of them. While the size advantage may make them vulnerable on the defensive side of the equation, the offense is as free flowing and a thing of beauty as you will get in the game. So it will ultimately be whether or not that backcourt can score enough to overcome the defense deficiencies or not.

THE KARDASHIA KIBITZER

COLLEGE KIDS TO REPRESENT ST. KANYE IN OBSCURE SPORT CONTEST

by Claude Harlan

CLAXTON CITY - A group of students from Claxton University held a concert on the school grounds for the sixth time in three months, playing a mixture of cover and original songs. An estimated about 850 people bought tickets for two Coinyes each. When asked what the student band was saving for, guitarist Albert Kelly, 23, had this to say: "We're gonna fly to Drawkland. Or Savalen, whatever. Wherever the next 7ball championship will be. We've already formed a team, signed up online, now we're just waiting for the venue."

For those who are asking just what the devil is 7ball, it's a sport that originated in the land of giants, Drawkland. According to the official rulebook, it's like basketball, except each team has 4 goals and it's in a square grass court. The "7" in the sport's name comes from the number of members, the number of points to win a set, and the number of sets to win a match. 7ball has become a cult hit here in Claxton U since some students saw a video online of the sport's first international championship, held in its origin country.

"No uniforms were specified except the helmets and cups, so we decided to wear business suits and rollerskates to every match", said the band's vocalist, 21-year-old Dylan Deschanel. Steve Owens, 23, who served as security during his pals' concert, added: "It's our first time, so we're just playing to have fun, get a little fame, maybe get 7ball known outside CU". When asked why Deschanel was listed as team captain in their entry, Owens said, "We, uh, just drew straws, really." As for the lack of media coverage due to the country not recognizing the sport, film student Bryce Goldeen, 24, who plays as a reserve, has it under control. "I brought my video camera and my best reporter impression."

Incredible, don't you think, the way in which they play,
Not allowing the opposition to get their own way,
The team is in unison, always fighting for the win,
Even when they think about their losses before, the team that has-been,
Rallying behind their captain, they won't let a loss go by,
Never will the sun set on basketball, never will the end be nigh,
Attacking the other team's hoop, scoring 2 points a shot,
Trying their hardest to leave the other team to rot,
Improving every time they play, getting better every time,
Owning the court more and more, trying to find another rhyme,
Nationally they are heroes, but internationally they are small but
Always trying to find that win, so one day they may stand tall,
Little did they know that they had a strong team to this day.

Bonapartium was no challenge for them, that team they just passed,
Against Mapletish they found no challenge, them they just outclassed,
Starting against the Royal Kingdom of Quebec a win that will internationally write their name,
Killing metaphorically all their team, Ethane can beat them at their game,
Ethane will find no difficulty in Flardania, the victory will be theirs,
Time to play Aji No Moto, they will try to give them a chance, play fair,
By and by, the team should destroy all who oppose the might of Ethane,
Always looking for that win, trying to find the win that gives them fame,
Looking for the win that will make them famous much like Saint Kanye,
Luckily having chance on their side, the other teams better not get in the way.

Ceni is the place at which Ethane will win and will progress
Hardly trying against easy teams, but hard ones provide a test,
Another time which the Ethanese players lose will not come to pass,
My mother can play better than the other teams, which are just a farce,
Pining for a victory in any degree in an international tournament
Interested in basketball only to win, the best team Ethane has sent,
Otherwise known as the team will win, no one will get in their way,
Nothing can stand in their way, here at Ceni, it is their day,
Saint Kanye, Saintland, San Llera may in the playoffs try to prevent,
Hilarious, the Ethanians think, you cannot beat this team that we have sent,
In the playoffs, Ceni, Cosumar, Abanhfleft, Ko-oren, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Saintland, Vangaziland, and Electrum may try to beat
Putting Ethane out the tournament, but that is a crazy tournament when they are still trying to stand on their feet,
Sure there may be challenges, San Llera won't let us go, but every foe, they cannot win as we will win, all of them we'll happily greet.

2, the number of wins the team has achieved so far,
0, the amount of losses that the team has had, or will have this tournament.

Ashur El-Amin loved to go to some of the gardens in Cenial whenever he had an off day from basketball or working at his family's restaurant. Although it was only a twenty-minute train ride away from New Oxford, it seemed an eternity to Ashur, as he had lots of ties to New Oxford - family and university being the most prominent. Yet it seemed like sometimes, the gardens were the best way to get away from it all, and sometimes he needed to get away from it all. Of course, now that he was in Cenial for the International Basketball Championships, that commute wouldn't be so long, but the gardens were still a place to rest and relax and take a nice, soothing walk around to calm his jittery nerves.

He had a lot to think about while taking his walk. The Cenian national team was doing alright in the IBC, but definitely a good start from a team that had never played all together and pretty good for a team on their debut in the international competition. A small victory over unranked Mountainaisa and then a tough defeat - by all of one point - to second seeded Saint Kanye in the second round. It was a tough fight from the Cenians, but ultimately - it seemed - their lack of scoring prowess would end up holding them back in further international competition. Aside from Ceni's problems, there were some other problems with some of the more higher ranked sides in the tournament, the case of the Electrumites and the Banguelans in point, falling to lower-ranked teams, while the Ko-orenites' loss, as number one nation, to an unranked side must have been especially disappointing. But at least all these sides could make up for their losses and still move on to the next round.

Aside from the issues with basketball, Ashur also was dealing with some issues of a more personal nature - he was having a bit of a crisis of conscience about his participation in the family restaurant business. Sure, he had studied to become a restaurant manager at the University of New Oxford, and he enjoyed the work - interacting with customers and smelling the smells of his family's restaurant - the kebabs, the kubideh, the hummus, the homemade bread - all of it was very nostalgic and close to the heart, and he loved being around it, but... Basketball was important too. He felt passionate about basketball, and was on the verge of deciding to spend the next ten years playing in CeniHoops and for the Cenian national team. After all, the restaurant would still be there, right? And his parents could live for another ten years and manage the place before handing it off to him...

TBC.

THE KARDASHIA KIBITZER

IBC 20: LATE RUN PROPELS SURGE TO 3-0, TOP OF GROUP

by Claude Harlan

Image

CENIAL - As the 20th International Basketball Championships group stages reaches its halfway mark, the St. Kanye Surge topped winless Mountainasia, 78-69. Frederic Trichet led the charge for the purple-clad Surge with 20 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. James Blackwell added 13 points, a rebound and an assist, while Cedric Philips had eleven points, six assists and two steals. With the win, the Surge remains the only unbeaten team in Group 1 with a 3-0 record. Silvacometopia, the only other unbeaten team in the group before today's matchups, were downed by host Ceni, 80-66.

The Mountainasians proved to be a tough opponent for the Kanyeans; the lead see-sawed for most of the game, with neither team leading by more than five (halftime saw a 38-all tie). That was, until only 2:54 remained in the fourth quarter. Philips stripped the ball from the Mountainasian shooting guard who was looking to tie the score, which was 67-65 in favor of the Surge. He then ran and waited for Trichet, who drained a quick three to increase their lead to five. On the next possession, Darren Overton stole the ball from the opposing small forward, and made a layup to add even more to the margin.

"This is exactly what we wanted, to go 3-0, but we still can't take it easy. Silvacometopia and Volcanoc are next [respectively], and they're both at 2-1. I don't want either of them to tie our record and get either of the top two spots via winner-over-the-other", Surge head coach Paulie Brewster told reporters that evening. Assistant coach Bernard Foley had to praise their opponents, though. "The Mountainasians showed a lot of moxie for a newbie team", he said. "But of course we had to counter that determination to go David and Goliath on us with our own determination to further our goal to do better than [third place] last year. And while we had to scrape for the win, the good performance on both ends of the court just proved that this game wasn't a stinker like yesterday." 1,431 happy Kanyeans left Cenial Pavilion tonight.

International Basketball Championships XX

Abaja goes 3-0 after a 98-71 rout

- By Samuel Defono & Goni Emike

Abaja 98 - 71 New Edom

The Abaja Lions have won their third straight game in the tournament going 3-0 and are currently #1 in their group though they are still tied with Cosumar, a team who they will be facing off against tomorrow. "We are doing good, and we are getting better and better each game. Does this mean we should get comfortable when we have a tough team we will be facing off tomorrow? No of course not. Cosumar is a very active team and if we make any mistake, we WILL pay for it. Let's get our heads in the game and win another one and go 4-0!" Says head coach Yuhan Anekwe. Abaja has also only given up 197 points. They are looking to continue that. In the first quarter, the Lions were already on a hot start. Jacob Nessal (SG) and Armani Welch (PG) led the way in the first quarter. Jacob Nessal (SG) had a total of 9 points in just the first quarter alone, including a three pointer. Calvin Anelé (SG) had a hot night at the three point line, going 6/10 for three's and 8/15 FG. Joseph Olu (C) and Jola Nicholson (PF) were both huge disruptions on defense tonight. In the first quarter alone, Jola Nicholson (PF) got 2 blocks and Joseph Olu (C) got 1. At the end of the first, the Lions were up 25-17. In the second quarter, Abaja started blowing out the gates. Armani Welch (PG) and Joseph Olu (C) made a dangerous combination. Armani got a total of 15 assists this game. Many of them were to Joseph Olu. Náná Mdamnbe (PF) also started making things happen. He got 2 steals in the first half, and helped out a lot on defense overall. With 5 minutes left in the half, Abaja had lead New Edom by a score of 42-34. It only got worse from there. Calvin Anelé (SG) had gotten a steal and took it home for a 2 point score. After that, Pápá Mouyre (SF) blocked a New Edom PG, got the rebound, passed it up to Armani Welch (PG), then Welch lobbed it to Pápá Mouyre for a big slam. New Edom fans had a pretty sloppy look on their faces from the second quarter to the end of the game. With 2 minutes left in the half, a New Edom guard knocked the ball out of Jacob Nessal's hands, and tried to take it the other way, however, Nessal went back and fouled him to prevent an easy 2 points. The New Edom guard went to the free throw line and made both. With a minute left in the half, Abaja lead 51-35. Abaja wasn't able to score a single point in the last minute of the half, but they were still up double digits. At halftime the Lions lead 51-37.

Halftime came along... Abaja 51 - 39 New Edom. in second half, it just got worse and worse for the New Edom squad. Their head coach looked so frustrated and unhappy. The Lions scored 26 points in the third quarter and gave up 20. Jacob Nessal (SG) went coast to coast after a block. Then Armani Welch (PG) made a three of his own. After a Joseph Olu (C) rebound, Jola Nicholson (PF) made a big slam dunk. However, with 5 minutes left in the third quarter, New Edom started stepping it up just a little bit, going on a 9-3 run, after two consecutive steals by their PG and SF. They tried their best to try to comeback into this game for the people of New Edom, but Abaja was just too much. Abaja again started scoring points on a very fast pace, as they went on a 17-7 run of their own later in the third. When the third quarter ended, Abaja lead New Edom 77-59. Pretty much nothing changed. Abaja was still scoring on the same pace all throughout the game, and New Edom would struggle again at times, then create a small spark, then struggle again. New Edom's SG, however, had a big game, scoring a total of 22 points, 9 of which were in the fourth quarter alone. He had a block on Alenau Eryenu (PG) then took it back for an and-one score. He made the free throw. New Edom was still trailing 83 to 61 with 8 minutes left in the game. Náná Mdamnbe made a shot to give the Abajans a 24 point lead over New Edom. 3 minutes left in the game, Jacob Nessal (SG) makes a shot to put Abaja up 91-67. After a New Edom turnover, head coach Yuhan Anekwe made substitutions. It was almost all bench players on the court now. Mathew Ojeije (SF) made the most of it, scoring 5 points in the last 3 minutes of the game. 96-71 now. 27 seconds left. Abaja takes their last shot of the game. This time Jola Nicholson (PF) is the one that makes it. Abaja wins their third straight game 98-71, and their confidence is starting to grow, but they should be careful, Says head coach Yuhan Anekwe. "We have our toughest opponent tomorrow...We can't get too cocky over this blowout win." He says to his players in the locker room. "But keep up the good work. I like the way you guys are playing out there!" Abaja in IBC 17 only went 3-5 for the tournament, failing to make the playoffs. Now they are already 3-0 and off to a hot start. A lot of people in the comment section have been buzzing about the upcoming game against Cosumar, where Abaja will be facing another undefeated team.

"This was the second game we were worried about in the group stage", said Coach Tim Tomasson. "I told the team to go out and seize this one from the start. This was a game we needed to win."

The Royals did just that. They came out shooting hot off of a few good looks. The ball was pushed into the paint and moved around the perimeter. The offense was taking a variety of shots, opportunistically capitalizing on whatever the defense presented. When the double team closed in on someone who drove, the attacker made the extra pass to the open man.

A few solid screen plays also translated into points.

The Royals started to run away with the game about halfway into the 2nd quarter.

"We knew they could make a comeback if we gave them room. So we had to play tough", said Jon Jennsen. "We felt like we needed a big lead to stop them."

The Royals have scored more points than any other team so far this season. They have the second best point differential.

"All we are doing is running our playbook", says coach Tim Tomasson. "We got the jump tonight. A few of our players happened to be on target. If those players were cold, the score could have been reversed."

But the Royals did not have to worry about a slump tonight.

Julius Handsen led scoring with 24 points and added 3 assists and 2 steals. He was 5-7 from behind the 3-point line. 12 of his points came in the 2nd quarter and were a part of the initial run that secured the Vannish lead.

The point guards racked up assists as usual, with both Yulssen and Sarah Overson totaling 7 assists each. One of the flashiest plays was a crossover by Sarah, a cut to the left which led her around one defender, then an over-the shoulder pass. Myke Fulborg caught the pass in motion while cutting to the basket. His defender had gone to help stop Overson. Fulborg flew under the rim and threw down a reverse dunk. The two point guards contributed 15 points total.

Lonnie Knucks also had a solid performance with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Frank Hurcle was 2-6 from the field, but added 3 blocks.

"I'd love to do more offensively", Knucks said after the game. "My shot just isn't falling."

The backup center still plays a key role defensively.

"We won the group's tough games", Hectare Yulssen told reporters. "Now we have to keep the heat on. We can't underestimate any team."

When asked how far the Royals could go, Yulssen said, "That's not something we're thinking about right now. We have to take this one game at a time. We'll deal with the playoffs when we get there."

No Place For Heroes, Part Twenty-three

The Foreign Quarter
Al Jawal, Gharbambiyah

"Say that again," Gerry Anthony said. "What's going on over there again?"

"I said that the rebels, Eskalumbuye's boys, are surrounding the Foreign Quarter," Ellie Quest replied. "They're about to break the only rule that they've held sacred for all these years."

"Hold on, hold on, this doesn't make any sense," Gerry said. "Wasn't Eskalumbuye's objective only to put Sulaiman back in power and nothing else? Why would he even think of going into the quarter, anyway?"

"I think Nando's girls rescuing me and Lizzie may have something to do with it," Ellie muttered.

"Ah, Jesus Christ, there it is," Gerry muttered. "Well, there's that mystery solved. All right, Ellie, listen to me because this is what you need to do: don't ever, ever go out of the Foreign Quarter. The JTF is just a few minutes away from Al Jawal now, and there's no need to you to get caught up in the crossfire and having to be sorted out with the bad guys by the angels, is there?"

"I guess not," Ellie said. "All right, we hear you, Gerry. We'll keep still and wait it out."

"Make sure that you do," Gerry said, and then he hung up.

"What did Gerry say?" Elizabeth Glenn asked.

"The JTF's just a few minutes away from here," Ellie replied. "He told us to stand still because if we get caught in the crossfire, he doesn't have the time to sort us out with the others."

"Well, isn't he lovely?"

"What about protecting the other people in the Foreign Quarter?" Elena Suarez, one of the Filipinos who rescued Ellie and Lizzie from the clutches of Eskalumbuye's rebels, asked. "We can't just leave them to the rebels!"

"Look, Elena, Joanna, I'll be honest with you two," Ellie said. "There's little, if anything, we can do for the Foreign Quarter. All we can hope for is that the JTF gets here before the rebels decide to enter the quarter."

"And how long before that happens?" Elena continued.

"We don't know, either. We'll just have to wait and hope for the best."
When five vehicles operated by the rebels suddenly blew up, the rebels had no idea how or why the vehicles exploded. There were no enemies in sight, and they knew where exactly the mines and explosive traps had been laid out in Al Jawal, so it couldn't possibly be a case of friendly fire.

What they had failed to realize was that during the years of Abdullah Sulaiman's transitional government, the Gharbambiyan Army had received some of the most advanced military vehicles in the world as part of a reconciliation program between Gharbambiyah and the World Assembly, which included the likes of MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets, Mil Mi-24 Hind helicopter gunships, and the third-generation M1 Abrams main battle tank, one of the most advanced tanks in armored warfare's history.

One spearhead of Leopard tanks was responsible for the five rebel vehicles that had exploded mysteriously, the first kills of the Fifth Battle of Al Jawal. It was about to become the bloodiest Battle of Al Jawal ever.

"Target destroyed," the gunner of the lead Abrams in the spearhead said to his commander.

"Well done," Isaiah Cabulovowino, self-declared president of the Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Gharbambiyah and President-General of the Gharbambiyan Armed Forces, said from the commander's seat. Say whatever will be said about Cabulovowino and his plans for his position and Gharbambiyah's future, but he didn't become general of the Gharbambiyan Armed Forces by sitting behind a desk. He was like the old-school generals who were always leading their men from the front and by example.

The reason why the rebels couldn't see the tanks that had destroyed their vehicles was because the tanks had started firing beyond visual range. Such was the technological gap between the two sides that the army could engage their targets without even seeing them physically while the rebels could only wait for the enemy to come to them before unleashing their guerrilla tactics.

The most powerful vehicles that the rebels had in their arsenal were a few trucks and buses armed with the few autocannon captured or salvaged from government depots. They also had little ammunition for the autocannon so they had to keep themselves from letting them all loose in a single burst, but they weren't even given a chance to do that because the government's tanks had already opened fire on those vehicles. By the time the JTF arrived at the outskirts of Al Jawal, the rebels' "heavy armor" were burning hulks in the sand.

"All units, this is the President," Cabulovowino said on the intra-unit communications net. Status report."

"Warmonger Troop, standing by."

"Caliph Troop, standing by."

"Defenders of Gharbambiyah Troop, we are standing by."

"Troops, prepare to move in on my mark," Cabulovowino commanded. Seconds later, the Gharbambiyan Army's 1st Armored Division entered the city of Al Jawal, marking the start of the true battle.

The rebels had parked a bus on the avenue leading to the center of Al Jawal and popped the tires, rendering it unable to move anymore. A captured Bushmaster autocannon had been mounted in the middle of the bus to both defend it from infantry and be a nuisance to armored vehicles attempting to enter the city. There were a few bodies wearing the uniform of the Gharbambiyan Army and the distinct green armor of the World Assembly lying in front of the autocannon, along with the burning hulk of a BTR-80 armored troop carrier.

"Load HE," Cabulovowino commanded as his tank faced up against the autocannon in the bus. The impact of the 25mm bullets striking the frontal armor of the Abrams sounded like the little pings made by pellets fired from an air gun against a regular steel plate.

"Loading HE," the loader shouted back as he rammed a high-explosive round into the barrel of the Abrams' 120mm tank gun. "Loaded!" he shouted as he closed the breech.

"Target in sight," Cabulovowino said as he aimed the tank's crosshairs on the autocannon. "Fire!"

"On the way!" the tank gunner shouted as he pulled the trigger, so to speak, to fire the main gun. There was a thundering roar from the gun, followed by a massive explosion inside the bus barricade. When the smoke had cleared, there was a massive hole in the side of the bus where the autocannon had once been mounted.

"Target destroyed," the gunner called out.

"Onwards and forwards, then!" Cabulovowino said. "And don't stop for anybody even if it's me!"

Cabulovowino's Abrams moved towards the bus barricade before stopping for a moment and then, as if girding its loins, the gears began to grind, and then the tank moved forward, crushing the thin steel that was the body and chassis of the bus. Other tanks followed Cabulovowino's example and crushed the bus under their treads, leaving behind what could be accurately described as a metal pancake.

Above the city, a fleet of helicopters of various sizes flitted out and about like moths around a flame. There were a few of the big boys, the Hind gunships, ready to provide massive firepower against a designated target, but mostly, they stayed away from the city to protect themselves from possible anti-aircraft weaponry.

There were other smaller and lighter-armed helicopters flying in formation with the main body of the Joint Task Force. They were mostly UH-1 Huey transport and support helicopters, but there was one MH-6 Little Bird helicopter which was different from all the rest. It was painted all in black and had no identifying markings on its body, nothing to tell an observer to whom it owed its allegiance. But that, in itself, was a clue to which it owed its allegiance, and that was to Fernando Tarrasco's "organization".

Fernando hadn't been pleased to learn that his Alouette had been shot down while trying to recover Gerry Anthony, Gabriel de Galicia, Ellen Quest, and Elizabeth Glenn from Al Jawal following their botched rescue mission. And he was definitely not happy when Gerry had asked him for another chopper with which they could fly back out to Al Jawal to rescue Ellie and Lizzie, who had been rescued by two women working for Fernando's organization before they had been executed by Eskalumbuye's militia. But since it was for a good cause, and because it was to rescue his fellow members of the deniable operations unit, he scrounged up a Little Bird from his organization's considerable assets within Gharbambiyah.

Gerry and Gab were seated in the back of the Little Bird while Rysa Browne and Fabio Marquez had deemed themselves well enough to fly a helicopter so soon after dumping the Alouette just about a day ago. Gerry let the pilots do their thing while he watched the battle between the JTF and the rebels commence below them. He then took out his cell phone and called Ellie. "You weren't kidding when you said that hell was about to break loose here!" she said in greeting.

"And it's nice to hear from you too, Ellie," Gerry replied. "Listen, we're in a brand new chopper from Nando's organization. We've come with the JTF's air support, but don't let that bother you. We're the unmarked black Little Bird, okay? Wherever you are, get to the top or the roof and then we'll come in and pick you up. Got that?"

"Got that, Gerry," Ellie said. "But what about our Filipino friends?"

"It's a Little Bird, Ellie. I'm sorry, but we won't have enough room for them."

"Well, that sucks. For all of us."

"I'm sorry, but that's the way it is."

"All right, Ger. I understand."

"Remember, Ellie, the rooftop."

"Got that. You don't have to tell me twice."

Ellie hung up at the same time Gerry did. Then she turned to Lizzie, Elena, and Joanna, and said, "Gerry is coming in with a new chopper, and he wants us up on the roof so we can just hop in and fly away in the least time possible."

"We'll go with you," Elena said. "We'll cover the rooftop from any rebels on the other side."

"Thank you very much," Ellie said, grabbing Elena's hand. "For saving our lives back there."

"We're only doing what is morally right," Elena replied.

The four women were up on the roof just under a minute later. They looked around for signs of any other rebels on the neighboring roofs, but they saw nothing and so they just waited in the middle of the roof for the Little Bird. It arrived a few minutes later, and it made a circle around the apartment's roof before coming in for a landing. The skids had barely touched the dirt on the roof before Gerry and Gab disembarked and walked over to Ellie and Lizzie. "What are you waiting for?" Gerry asked. "Let's go!"

"Gerry! What about Elena and Joanna?" Lizzie asked, pointing at the Filipino women. Gerry looked at them and came to a decision. "All right, I guess we've got room for the two of them."

While all this was going on, Rysa happened to look out at Al Jawal's skyline, and that was probably what saved her life, and Fabio's, once again. It was just a brief glance, but that brief glance was more than enough for her to see that a rebel had made it up to the roof of a shelled-out building and was aiming a rocket or a missile at them.

"Fabio, get out!" she shouted.

"What?" Fabio Marquez asked, and then he saw the smoke trail rapidly approaching the Little Bird, and he and Rysa jumped out of their seats and ran just as the rocket or missile made a direct hit on the Little Bird.

As fire and debris from the wreckage floated down on them, Rysa muttered, "Oh, Fernando's not going to like this."

Patria Poble Pupusas vs Marano Flood, an oral history

Part 2: Game 1

Viktorio - Game 1. There'd been a lot of attention on the Cthulhu United-Llerana Cthulhu rivalry, so this series was not quite as hyped as the other one. Game 1 ratings didn't do too well.

Dionis Quoe, Patria Poble Pupusas Head Coach - We were confident, and we were ready for Marano. We knew that we were the better team, that we could beat them. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? I'm not quite sure.

Atualo Vela, Patria Poble Pupusas Forward - I had the home crowd behind me, and I was really feeling it early on in game 1. I hit some early threes if I recall correctly.

Murillo - I'm watching the game - you know, from the bench - and my good friend Atualo starts hitting everything in sight. It was a really discouraging start.

Vela - Fidel Murillo? Who is that?

Murillo - We used to play pickup together. (Laughs) Ah, good times...

Vela - I have no memory of this.

Quoe - We were feeling it in Game 1. Atualo and Marco were hitting some outside shots, we were really locking in on defense... everything seemed to be on track.

Viktorio - So Patria Poble was up, like, fifteen at the half.

Rolado - I took them into that locker room and REALLY started laying into them.

Tomas d'Eern, Marano Flood Guard/Forward - He said something to me along the lines of, "If you don't close out on three point shooters, I will take Atualo Vela's long-ass arms and shove them up your ass!" (Laughs) I closed out on shooters after that.

Viktorio - Second half starts out, Marano silences the crowd. They start to storm back. The lead's ten. Now five. Now there's a couple minutes remaining in the third quarter and it's a tie game at 62.

Quoe - I called a timeout. This couldn't continue.

Vela - We weren't about to just give up now that our lead was gone. Hell no. Last couple minutes of that quarter, Marco and I combined for maybe 4 threes, we took the lead back.

Rolado - We were surging earlier, all of a sudden we can't buy a basket. They regain their lead. Fourth quarter starts, more of the same.

Viktorio - In that game, Vela and Vas combined for, I think, 13 three pointers. It was insane.

Vas - We were back on track. Ended up winning by 20.

Viktorio - Final score, Pupusas 91, Flood 71. Patria Poble won after all.

To be continued...
