The Indios were back; but not to the point that they are really back to contention. The expectations were reset; just as the nation they were representing. Torn by the attack by their near-neighbors (Ingla Terra, now CTEd), which they helped during the Great Tsunami. Sad to see many people lying to the ground, with most of the baseball players' lives not spared.

The Indios were absent during WBC 34 and 35 after a horrible start to their campaign at WBC 33, with archives of multiple executions from the government of the host nation of that tournament adding insult to injury. They made a three game rally after still propping up the bottom of the standings at the end of Matchday 7, but it still wasn't enough to for them to advance.

But amongst the dark, there were two people key to the return of the Indios to the multiverse's biggest baseball tournament: Dhaeyvid and Dominick. They held a three-month bootcamp to those who wanted to participate in the WBC, which inspired other people to do so (clubs forming for the new TRBLiga season, and basketball tryouts for the new Angas team (Angas Barangay 3.0)

This will be the first time that the Indios play a series of matches against same opponents. The opponents they have in the group are also capable of winning games themselves:

The Indios open up their campaign against the Ponies, who should give them a tough challenge given they play on the road for the first series. Then they go to Acidica, in which a sweep can be expected. They host Cosumar and then travel to Nassau-Hessen for their toughest assignments - which could also determine their fate in the group. They round up the first half of their campaign against Ethane, ranked 27th in the world. The Indios will then have a break before hosting a back-to-back series against their first two opponents before visiting Atlantian Oceania for another meeting with Cosumar. They close out their campaign hosting Nassau-Hessen and then on the road at Ethane for the final series.

They just hope they can have the Spirit of WBC 29 into them as they start their probably long journey back to greatness.

BASE CORPS HOPING TO MAKE UP FOR LAST EDITION

As you may or may not know, the Base Corps, Drawkland's national baseball team, made an honestly horrible appearance at their debut international tournament, the World Baseball Classic 35, winning only 2 games out of over 2 dozen. That same squad of PBL all-stars is returning to the multiversal stage of the WBC, in edition 36. Both the players, staff, and fans are dearly hoping that the base corps will make a slightly more fitting show, even though their group this edition is arguably much more difficult. Who are we playing this year? Let's see:

Next to the names are the team ranks. That's right, Drawkland is heading up against two top 10 teams, and arguably the worst nightmares for baseball teams playing them. Frenline Delpha is known for baseball, and the infamous Gregoryisgodistan is one of the most influential nations in baseball altogether. Worse still, the Base Corps is the worst ranked team in their group - going simply by rank and past performance, the only team Drawkland is expected to beat is Anglatia, a new, unproven team.

Will Drawkland be the designated punching bag for their group in WBC 36, or will they finally prove themselves and/or throw in a big upset, advancing to the playoffs? Only time will tell. Here's a preview for the team that Drawkland will face in the first series:

TEAM: Anglatia (UR), in Anglatia

While Anglatia is still an unproven team, it's well expected that they'll put up a fight. They're new on the sports plane, but many players from most of their teams in several sports came from Armeia, a notable sports nation. It's expected that they're going to put up a bit of a fight for Drawkland. Only fate can tell what this will bring.

Previews for other teams will be presented as they come along. Good luck to the Base Corps, maybe this time they'll finally get a bit of glory on the international stage.

Manager: Matthew Patterson
Matthew Patterson as manager of this team has brought the team much success. After a really decent run in the IBS X,
which saw the nation get knocked out late in the tournament in a close game against The Sword Bloke, he went into
the WBC 35, also hoping for a decent run, inspired by teams such as Schiltzberg. Even though the team did not make
it out of the groups, due to losing the tiebreaker game against Jeckland, the national team was knocked out. However,
it was still seen as a successful tournament for a first time for the team, and with the national team, which remains
unchanged from the IBS X and WBC 35, now ranked 27th in the world, the hope is there that the team can go further
than last time, and bring fame and success to the nation. Whatever happens here though, Matthew Patterson is unlikely
to go, as he has built up his popularity to an extent where almost everyone likes him, and it would take more than 1
poor tournament for people to begin to question his position for the most part.

The McTidley arena is the new baseball arena recently commissioned after the IBS X by the government, as they felt even though not many baseball games take place in Ethane, that we ought to have a baseball arena in Ethane for those times when we would be playing home matches. The McTidley arena is named after the teacher who tried to set up a baseball league in the humorous reality tv show, ''But it's Baseball'', which ran from 2003-2005, and attracted an average of 10 million viewers an episode in it's first 2 series. This stadium can hold around 13,500 spectators, and is currently operated by the EBA (Ethane Baseball Association).

Summary of Group & Chances

A very interesting group for the national team of Ethane to be going into this cycle, a group that the nation does have a chance to progress out of. Facing Cosumar in the first series will be the biggest hurdle to get over, and not necessarily a must-win game, which is good to not have the pressure on against the highest ranked side in the group. Ethane will also be playing them again in series 6, and while a win would be good against them, and give greater hope for progression, it is not needed overall. Series 2, the national team will be facing the 10th ranked Nassau-Hessen team. It would be good for the team to get some victories off against this team, either in the second series or the seventh series, as it would boost confidence and help with the nation's standing in the group. Series 3 and 8 the nation team is facing Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acidica. Now, as this team is unranked, we should be able to beat them by a decent margin, but the worry here is that conflict between the 2 sides will happen due to tensions between the countries. Series 4, and 9, the national baseball team faces the 18th ranked Equestrian States. They are the closest matched team in the group to Ethane, and getting in some solid wins against them will be necessary in order to progress. It is completely possible for Ethane to win, it will just require some work to get there. Finally, to round off the group in series 5 and 10, the nation will be playing against The Royal Barangay. They are ranked 65th in the world, and while we don't expect this game to be a walkover as such, it shouldn't be too hard to rack up victories against them.

As I'm sure you know, the wicked Anti-Patriarch Nicholas whatever (heathens don't get their chosen name) has fled your country after wreaking a great evil on it. He was a known leader of the Christian State, which terrorized your country and he may even have robbed the treasury.

Well, we in Gregoryisgodistan aren't too fond of him either. Radical Christianity is a threat to society, and the Anti-Patriarch, as far as we are concerned, is a war criminal guilty of crimes against humanity. Therefore, we desire the same thing you do - to track him down and execute him, preferably via Brownie Cutter of Death.

To that end, I submit to you a proposal, which I hope you will transmit to the appropriate authorities. In exchange for our nations working together on a joint effort to track down and execute the Anti-Patriarch, we will remove you from the Enemy List, lift all sanctions on your nation, and extend official diplomatic recognition, including an embassy in your capital. You, of course, would do the same to us in exchange for our military cooperation in tracking down a mutual enemy.

Finally, I would ask, though not demand, that upon his successful and certain capture, the Anti-Patriarch be executed via Brownie Cutter of Death and that the execution ceremony be televised live in Gregoryisgodistan. You may show the execution ceremony live on television in your nation as well, if you should so choose, and perhaps we can even cooperate to sell the TV rights to other countries. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec seems particularly fond of televising executions, so perhaps we can sell the broadcast rights to a network there as well. Should that happen, we would split the proceeds from all rights sales outside Gregoryisgodistan and Saintland, further boosting your treasury.

Amazonesta gets first ever World Baseball Classic victory with 6-1 win over Kaboomlandia as they drop 2 out of 3 at home

Amazonestans took one out of 3 at home against Kaboomlandia in their first World Baseball Classic

AMAZONIA CITY- Amazonesta was playing against the world's 21st best team, Kaboomlandia, in their first ever appearance in the World Baseball Classic. The three game series, the first of the competition, left many Amazonestans excited. Baseball is usually considered to be the nation's second most popular sport, after football, and it showed in this series. All three games sold out at Estadio Amazonia extremely quickly, as they all filled above the listed maximum seating capacity of 31,000, and all hitting the standing-room only capacity at 33,000. Even though that won't happen as not every game is Amazonesta's first game, this was a big first step in baseball for the Amazonestans.

While there were good things to take away from this series, there was also bad things to take away from this series. First of all, in Amazonesta's first ever competitive game, they got smoked on their on field by Kaboomlandia, by a score of 10-1. Kaboomlandia really took it to Amazonesta in that game, giving them a rude awakening and quite the welcome to the international baseball sporting scene. Diego Ventura, who was considered to be the ace of this team, was chased after just 2 & 2/3s innings. In that time, he threw 71 pitches, allowed 5 runs, and left the bases loaded. He had a terrible start, and the Kaboomlandians rolled to a 10-1 victory, in a game where Kaboomlandian pitcher Barry Barton scattered 5 hits across 7 & 1/3 innings for the victory.

The second game, however, was all Amazonesta. Gustavo Jardim, who as fans remember, was formerly a great pitcher domestically, had a fantastic game. He mixed his off-speed stuff well, and kept the Kaboomlandian hitters guessing the entire game. He allowed 8 hits over 6 innings, earning a quality start and the win, as well as forcing 3 double play balls, making sure to not let runners get into scoring position. The highlight of the game was, however, when third baseman César Canto went deep in the 2nd inning, sending the Amazonestan crowd into a frenzy and giving the Amazonestans the lead for the first time, as they never looked back thanks to the pitching from Jardim.

The third game was a stark contrast from the first two games. While game 1 of the series was a blowout, and the 2nd game of the series was also a blowout but in the other direction, the third game of this series was anything but. This was a close battle throughout the entirety of the game. Kaboomlandia put a 3 spot on youngster Fernando Moreira, who only lasted 5 innings, but a bottom of the 9th single from Márcio Ribeiro that scored César Canto. Amazonestan long reliver Jorge Fagundes worked 5 solid innings, but eventually caved, allowing a run in the top of the 13th.

Ultimately, what Amazonesta showed in these 3 games was fight & heart. While they did drop 2 out of 3, including the game in heartbreaking fashion. Now they must travel away from home for their first set of qualifiers, which will see the back of their rotation get some solid playing time and a chance to shine on the big stage. These don't come often, and ans always, the Amazonestans will try to leave everything on the field to climb up the group rankings and work towards a knockout stage place.

At least, that was what people said before the latest humiliation of the Abanhfleft national baseball team at the hands of some dark horse team named Coconut Isle or something like that. Now, a great deal of change has happened to the Abanhfleft Revolution, mostly because a terrorist attack has killed some members of the national team and left some more unable to play baseball anymore. This is basically a new team about to step up to the plate, and whether they're going to be more successful than the old team still remains to be seen...

BASE CORPS SUFFERS HUMILIATION IN WBC DEBUT SERIES

As was feared before the Base Corps headed out to the WBC, the Drawkian baseball team has put up another bad showing in their debut, losing their series 2-1 to the unranked Anglatia. As such, they are now ranked the lowest in their group.

It's unclear exactly what caused such a failure again, after all the practice and preparing that went into the preseason for the WBC. Some critics are already suggesting that Drawkians just aren't as good at baseball as other nations and they should pull out of the WBC after this edition for fear of being worse failures. Here's a recap of the games played in the series at Anglatia:

Game 1 was the worst out of the bunch, by far. After giving up 4 runs in the bottom of the second (2 RBIs from a homerun by Anglatia's Manuel Fotis, and a triple by Stefan Waltersonn who stretched it to home after an error by Drawkland's third baseman, Sean Navis), the Base Corps managed to eek out a run an inning for the next 4 out of 5 innings, but in the process, gave up 5 runs in the same space, and giving up another 3 runs in the 8th. Of course, getting 8 runs in the top of the 9th wasn't an option against Anglatia's Devon Paitl, who was still on the mound after pitching a relatively short game. The Drawkians only managed to get through their lineup 4 and a half times before being taken out by the fearsome Anglatia defense. It was a poor start to the season.

Game 2 was only marginally better. After allowing 2 runs in the bottom of the third and letting them stick, unaswered, until the 6th inning (Mike Navis batted in by a double from his brother Wes Navis), was a massive morale detractor, especially on the road. To make matters worse, the score was still at 1-2 in the bottom of the 7th, until another 3-run homer was hit off of Drawkian pitcher Isiah Kirby by the Redcaps catcher, Shamus Duffy. It just sealed the deal when the Base Corps only managed another run in the 8th before getting a run right back in the bottom. The score stuck, 2-6, for the remainder of the game (which wasn't very long after a pathetic 3-up-3-down 9th inning for the Base Corps lineup).

Game 3 was when Drawkland finally answered the monstrous Redcaps in a close game that was almost lost towards the end. It quelled a few doubts about Drawkland obtaining another winless WBC, as this single win is half of the win record last year for the Corps. In the bottom of the second, the game seemed to be taking the familiar downward turn with two base hit RBIs in a row before retiring the side (thanks to a masterful pickoff by Kole Renato to Roger Madison). A change of scenery occurred, however, when a surprise homerun by Roger Madison batted in Sean and Mike Navis to get the Drawkians in the lead, for the first time all series. The sparse Drawkian crowd went wild and the pep band played louder than usual to keep some momentum going. In the top of the 7th, a solo homer by Antonio Knight brought the Drawkians to a lead by 2, although it was answered in the bottom of the eighth by a run batted in by Anglatia's Rohan Narang. Owen Malley scored on the play, and Illias Michaelis attempted to get home, but a throw fired by Roger Madison to Wes Navis got the tag in on Michaelis, retiring the side with the Drawkians still in the lead. The 9th inning was uneventful for both sides, and the crowd went wild, at least the Drawkian part of it, at the first victory in the WBC.

NEXT SERIES: Frenline Delpha (7), in Frenline Delpha

Frenline Delpha also had a disappointing debut to the 36th WBC, despite being one of the top 10 ranked teams. So far they've scored 15 runs, while Drawkland scored 10, an average of about 5 runs to 3 per game. This makes the matchup a true toss-up, and only fate will tell how the already-diminshed Base Corps will do against the previously-fearful Anacondas. However, international relations between Frenline Delpha and Drawkland is very good, so the games will likely be exciting and lighthearted regardless of the outcome. Right now, the Base Corps is just hoping to double their win count and manage to tie last edition's results, by obtaining another single win out of the series. Good luck Base Corps, you're gonna need it.

Losthaven Walks Off in the Tenth

The best way to describe Manager Tristen Smalls after the game was livid. He had an agry stare in his eyes, and you could practically see the fumes pour our his nose. When asked about how he felt after the game, he simply answered, "We've got areas to improve." It was not a greta series for the Anacondas, as they dropped two out of three games to the heavily underdogged Losthaven, who they trounced amazingly in the group play of the last World Baseball Classic. Of course, this wasn't that tournament, and this wasn't the Anacondas' day. They came into the game tied one to one in their three game road trip to Losthaven, and they weren't anxious for another loss. After all the Anacondas are under immense pressure to win the title this year, after getting dropped by Jeckland last year.

After going one and one in their previous two games, the Anacondas were ready to defeat the Lamps when game three came around. Unfortunately, the Lamps had other plans for the results of this game. In the first inning, Lane started out the game by taking a 1-2 count before popping out to shortstop. The next batter fared better, as Dredge scorched a liner that landed just past infield, allowing him to head to first base. On the next batter, Dredge tried to get the jump on the pitcher, but Chapman, tha catcher, managed to pick him off, giving the Anaocndas their second out. On the very next pitch, Haman went down swinging, ending the inning. On the Losthaven half of the first, they went down as quickly as they came up, ending the first win no runs. However, the game would come alive in the next inning, for both teams.

It all started when Manteis pounded a grounder that just missed the third baseman, and that allowed him to reach first safetly. The next batter, Trifort, was beaned in the leg by an errant fastball, causing a warning to be given to Worthington. With two runners on base, Jehosez stepped up to the plate and cracked a hard double into right field. The hit allowed Manteis to score, but a quick throw prevented Trifort from doing the same. On the very next pitch, Defelt grounded out, giving the Anacondas their first out of the inning. However, Hector didn't follow in his teammate's footsteps. On the third pitch, he singled to center field, the ball skipping over second base on its way to the outfield. Trifort ran into home quickly to score, giving the Anacondas the 2-0 lead. However, the Lamps weren't going down without a fight. They started off their half of the second with a srikeout, before Mendoza stepped to the plate. On a 0-2 count, the pitcher threw a pitch that hung over the plate too long, and Mendoza ripped it deep into left field, giving his team their first run of the match. They were not done with the runs, however.

In the Anacondas' half of the third inning, they got nothing done, but they still held onto their 2-1 lead. That was, until Losthaven came up to bat. Their half started with an openign single from Chapman. Then, Worthington, the pitcher, cracked a splinting double, allowing Chapman to come into home sprinting, tieing the game up at 2. Up next, Andaluz smoked a single between the first and second basemen, and the Lamps had runners on second and third. Then, Giron came up and cracked off a double to right field. It landed on the line, and Jehosez had to chase it down. Unfortunately, he didn't get the ball back into the infield until Worthington and Andaluz both came into score, giving the Lamps a 4-2 lead. Up next, Rusmussen hit a high fly ball to deep right, but it was caught on the warning track. However, it went so far into the outfield that Giron managed to reach third seconds before the throw came in. Mendoza then came up wiht a runner on third, and he drove him in when he cracked a single that skipped past the glove of the diving first baseman. That was all she wrote for that inning, but the damage was still done. The Lamps now had a 5-2 lead.

The Anacondas weren't dead at that point, but it certainly didn't look good for them. The Anaocondas managed to get some pressure on the lamps, but an inning ending double play stopped any progress they had made dead in its tracks. Before the bottom of the fourth began, the Anacondas made a pitching change, putting Scormens in for Wilfskin. After that, neither teams could get anything going for a while, until Losthaven broke the floodgates once again in the bottom of the sixth. Rasmussen started it off with a double, and Mendoza followed that with an impressive single, giving the Lamps two their next batter, Milner, went down on three pitches, giving the Lamps one out. However, Minnick would not make the same mistake. He waited for a pitch he liked, and then he drilled it, scoring both Rasmussen and Mendoza on his way to a two-RBI double. The Anacondas wouldn't have to wiat lo to answer, however.

The top of the seventh didn't start out well for the Anacondas, as their lead-off man, Defelt, grounded out to the shortstop. Luckily, Hector followed his teammate by whacking the ball deep into left field, allowing him to round all the way into a sliding triple before the throw came in to stop him in his tracks. That shook Worthington's focus, as he walked the very next batter on five pitches. With runners on the corners, Lain came up to the plate. He took the first pitch looking, as it zipped just high enough to be a strike. However, he was ready when the second pitch came along, and he ripped it over the right field fence. The ball just flew until it was caught in the stands by a fan attendign the game. With that, the Anacondas had managed to bring it back down to a two-point defecit. However, the inning wasn't over yet. The next batter gave the Anacondas their second out when he grounded out to second, but Haman wasn't prepared to let the inning slip away. He grabbed a piece of the ball and got to second with a double. Manteis followed it up with a single, putting runners on the corners for the Anacondas. With two outs, Trifort stepped up to bat. He took the first pitch looking, but Manteis had gotten a jump on the ball, and he arrive mere mili-seconds before the tag was applied, giving the team their first stolen base in international play. This rattled the pitchr, as he threw a ball that the catcher had no chance of stopping. Both runners moved up a base, and this meant that Haman scored another run for his team on a passed ball. Manteis also reached third on the errant pitch. Then, with a 1-2 count, Trifort pounced on the ball, allowing Manteis to come into score, tieing up the game at seven apiece.

The score would remain that way at the end of the ninth inning, so the game went into extra innings. In Frenline's half of the tenth, Trifort started off by doubling to left field. However, Jehosez flied out near the bleacher sin foulf territory, meanign there was one out when Defelt came up. Unfortunately, he grounded out, giving the Anacondas two outs with a runner on second. Hector wasn't ready for the innign to close, so he whacked a single, putting two runners on base. In what is probably the most bone-headed move in international Anacondas baseball history, the manager put his closer in to pitch the tenth inning. In fact, he sent him up to bat, thinking that he'd be able to drive in the runner on third. He was wrong. In just three pitches, Wiley grounded out to third, ending the Anacondas scoring hope. The nail in the coffin came with one out. Wiley had handled the first batter, deliviring a strike-out on three pitches. However, Giron would not go down so easily. He took two pitches without swinging, giving him a 1-1 count. However, Wiley gave him a pipe pitch right where Giron wnated it, and Giron caught all of the ball. As it travelled backwards, the Anacondas' players' hearts sank. It continued to fly, and after what seemed like forever, it landed over the right field wall. The Losthaven Lamps had wlaked off in extra innings, winning 8-7.

The Indios of The Royal Barangay avenged the first day defeat inflicted to the by the Equestrian States but it took extra innings for the Barangayans to put away the Ponies twice.

Despite having the advantage of playing second, the Indios failed to beat the Ponies in the first game in their series. This was after the Indios conceded four runs in the first two innings. The Indios managed to close the gap to one run, but the Ponies hang on to grab the first game. The Barangayans actually made a good start, leading 2-0 leading into the fourth inning, where the Equestrian States managed to score a run, and three innings later were able to level the game at 2-2. TRB managed to snatch victory at the bottom of the 11th after a sacrifice fly with 1 out allowed Mary Agati to timely run into the home plate and snatch the victory.

The last game of the series proved to be an exciting one, with the score at 5-4 heading into the top of the ninth. However, the Ponies managed to snatch a run to keep their hopes of the win alive. At the bottom of the 10th however, Jerald Ricafort managed to hit a 3-run homer for the Barangayans to clinch the series 2-1. There was a three way tie at the top as Ethane and Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acidica won their respective series 2-1. The Indios face the latter in a bid to wrestle solo top. - ABP

Tigers Take Two of Three, But Bullpen A Concern

The offense is off to a solid start, led by Stefan Danilo and his batting line of 7-for-12 (.583) with two home runs and two stolen bases, and the starting pitching has been solid: Justin Zheng pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out twelve and walking just two in his first start as a Tiger, Angeline Romero threw eight shutout innings (albeit allowing five hits and walking six to her six strikeouts), and even the unheralded James Rhodiere, the long reliever who was given a surprise start when Kyle Hogan was out with a blister, held his own with one earned run in six and two-thirds, while allowing just three hits and no walks. The starters, overall, posted an ERA of 0.38.

But the relief pitching has been horrendous. To show you exactly how, we've clipped the ninth inning of game two and the seventh-through-ninth innings of game three.

GAME TWO
Top Ninth, Tigers Ahead 2-0, Li to face Weirawa, Nailros, Qyia (2-3-4)

Right. So the Tigers are on the brink of winning their second consecutive game to start this Classic, which of course would be very good. Angeline Romero is out after eight innings - the Derriersville lefty wasn't particularly overpowering, but she was more than good enough to throw eight shutout innings.

Come to think of it though, if that sixth inning goes any differently her final line would probably look a lot closer to 5.2 IP/3 ER than 8 IP/0 ER, and she's gotten some lucky breaks (as well as, with the eleven allowed baserunners, very good sequencing). Still, eight shutout innings is very good. Not a single Tigers starter has given up a run.

Weirawa steps in the box, takes two high fastballs, and steps out again. He gets back in, only to almost get plunked in the shoulder by a third fastball. Li isn't off to a very good start, and his velocity (94-95 mph) is a little bit low. Troubling.

And he's done it. Li tries to come back with a curveball, but Weirawa lays off, the pitch is low by about an inch, and the Tigers have conceded the infamous leadoff walk. Only bad things will happen from here. Nailros steps in to bat.

Nailros has some pop in her bat, and you don't want somebody with poor command facing someone like that. Weirawa is a decent base-runner, so this could go pretty badly.

It does. Li's first-pitch curveball is badly hung and Nailros pounds it down the line. The Tigers are lucky that it one-hops the wall, preventing Weirawa from scoring. Highly doubt Ericsson could've thrown Weirawa out at the plate if that ricochets off the wall.
CHR 0 - 2 SLL, Top Ninth, no outs, men on second and third, 0-0, Valentin to Qyia
Hanna Valentin is a very good reliever, but I have reservations. If Qyia can catch onto her slurve, which is okay but not great, she'll knock in a few runs. If she only gets two-seam fastballs, though, she might be able to put a good swing on one. Really depends on how Valentin is pitching today. Better than Adam Li, I hope.

She cleverly drops a late-breaking slurve onto the inside corner, but although Qyia won't bite, neither will the referee. She comes back with two hard fastballs (97 and 96) - Qyia takes the first for a strike and taps the second meekly foul. Valentin makes the mistake of returning to her slurve - Qyia, though, is off-balance and grounds out weakly to first. Unfortunately, a run scores.
CHR 1 - 2 SLL, Top Ninth, one out, man on second, 0-0, Vasquez to Tlamo
The Tigers are in a pickle, and it's the legendary Troy Vasquez, arguably the greatest reliever in Llamanean history, who will step in to face Tlamo, who is pretty good. We'll get out of this.

Nya Tlamo has other plans. While Vasquez's first pitch is a 98-mph fastball in on the hands, Tlamo somehow bloops a single into right, scoring a run. Tie game.
CHR 2 - 2 SLL, Top Ninth, one out, man on first, 0-0, Vasquez to Plotts

A frustrated Troy Vasquez hits second baseman Plotts with a wild fastball. This is bad. This is very bad. Cameron will stick with his best reliever, though.

Pierre Ettienne is one of the weakest hitters on the Anomalies. Vasquez has no trouble getting to 0-2 with well-placed cutters. He tries to fool the right-fielder with a changeup, but Ettienne fouls it off. He nearly strikes the man out on a 97-mph fastball down the middle, but Ettienne barely gets to it, fouling that pitch off too. He takes a cutter inside for a ball, then fouls off another pair of fastballs.

Vasquez comes back with a low-and-inside fastball - Ettienne, just trying to make contact, connects perfectly. The ball flies 375 feet over the left-field fence, and Chromatika leads five to two.

Troy Vasquez looks like he wants to kill himself. He leaves for James Rhodiere. The Tigers have given up.

James Rhodiere hits Aliera-Magnusson with the first pitch. We might as well go home now.

Rhodiere's second pitch of the night is tapped neatly to Polanco at first, and the Tigers effortlessly turn two. Inning over. But it's too late - the opponents nearly bat around, score five, three on a home run from one of their worst hitters, and take a commanding lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Last game, a bullpen meltdown lost us the game. Now that Rhodiere has delivered a very good performance, we need to make sure this game is 100% locked down.
CHR 1 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, none out, nobody on, 0-0, Szennes to Moras
Szennes flits about the zone - slider in, fastball out, fastball in, fastball out, slider in - but Moras manages to put a decent swing on the second slider, lining it sharply up the middle - Xander Fiers, for all of his defensive wizardry, can only stand and watch the ball roll into Fernandez's glove.
CHR 1 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, none out, man on first, 0-0, Szennes to Weirawa
Szennes throws three hard fastballs at the bottom of the zone - maybe it was in the scouting report? If so, the report is wrong - not only because Weirawa is an okay hitter low in the zone, but also because he lines the last fastball into left. Uh oh.
CHR 1 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, none out, men on first and second, 0-0, Szennes to Nailros
Szennes throws a devastating slider, then another, and watches Nailros whiff on both. The second pitch, though, gets away from Sofia Rasmussen, and Moras tries to advance to third. He makes it, not because the ball rolled particularly far, but because Rasmussen's throw was way off target.

Szennes tries to come back with another low fastball. Nailros only barely makes contact, and the Tigers turn two, but it's not enough to keep Moras from scoring. Oh well.

Szennes' first pitch is a dominant slider that Qyia only barely gets to, trickling it down the third base line - but Stefan Danilo boots the ball, then pulls Polanco off the bag with a poor throw. Qyia reaches on the error, continuing Szennes' run of death by a thousand paper cuts - single, single, passed ball, double play, error.
CHR 2 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, two outs, man on first, 0-0, Szennes to Tlamos
Tlamos bloops Szennes' first pitch down the left field line, but a defensive shift leads to literally nobody being there - Tlamos has a very softly-hit double. Qyia makes it to third, and Szennes is taken out for Ryan O'Reilly.

Ryan O'Reilly's sinker is dribbled down the first-base line - but, contrary to young Rasmussen's expectations, the ball isn't foul, and Plotts hustles out a single. Rasmussen is furious with herself, and another run trickles in.
CHR 3 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, two outs, men on first and third, 0-0, O'Reilly to Ettiene
It's yesterday's hero Pierre Ettiene who steps up to bat. O'Reilly throws five sinkers on the lower half of the strike zone, but can't get Ettiene to bite, and the result is a walk.
CHR 3 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, two outs, bases loaded, 0-0, Knutsen to Aliera-Magnusson
Justin Knutsen's first pitch, a "knut", is smashed down the left-field line for a two-run double. The Tigers have done it again.
CHR 5 - 6 SLL, Top Eighth, two outs, men on second and third, 0-0, Knutsen to Ni
Knutsen gets Ni to pop out, and the inning ends, but not before Chromatika can bat around and narrow the deficit immensely. Including yesterday, six relievers have either given up a run or allowed an earned run, out of seven - James Rhodiere and Annalise Saucedo are the only ones not guilty.

CHR 6 - 6 SLL, Bot Ninth, no outs, man on first, 0-0, Ni to Higgs-Novak
And, with Weirawa's solo shot in the top half of the inning, James Rhodiere - the long reliever who started today - is the only Llamanean reliever not to give up a run in some way. Michael Higgs-Novak digs in, with pinch-runner Eckert standing on first.

Ni's first pitch, a fastball, is whacked down the left-field line and over the wall. The Tigers win a nail-biter to take the series, but they'll need a lot more bullpen help if they want to go far this classic.

GONE - PART 1.5

The always packed out stadium had an even bigger attendance than capacity, with standing room opened up to allow for 75,000 to watch the Sungri Foxes take on the Underfell Storm in game number six of the Championship Series of the Imperial Baseball Association. The Storm's starting pitching rotation was made entirely of established aces and young studs who would have long futures in the league, and on the mound right now was Arianne Venczel, one of the few female players in the league to become very successful and the only pitcher on the team who could throw a knuckleball. At bat was Rohan Narang, a hitter with decent power and a .320 batting average.

Arianne started her pitch, and Rohan expected a knuckleball and didn't swing. The fastball went straight down the middle of the strike zone for his second strike, and the count was two and two. The Foxes were still down 2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, with one out, after an Underfell home run in the seventh. They needed to get a win here, or the Storm would win the series on the road, but with Venczel only giving up two runs in the game and still going strong with thirteen strikeouts, the task at hand was quite daunting.

Rohan stepped out of the batter's box momentarily to catch his breath, before stepping back in and getting into his batting stance. Arianne went into her next pitch and hurled a splitter at him, and even though the coaches wanted him to avoid swinging at any pitches that could strike him out, his instincts told him to go for it and he swung at it as hard as he could, making contact and driving the pitch deep into left field. He hadn't heard it at the time, but ever since he heard it afterwards, the radio call was stuck in his head; 'Venczel throws a slider down the middle, Rohan strikes it deep towards left field, it's going back, back, back, it's at the warning track, Bystrom is chasing, AND HE WON'T GET IT IN TIME BECAUSE THIS BALL IS GOOOOOOOOOOOOONE! THE SCORE IS NOW TIED AT THREE, AND THIS PLACE IS GOING CRAZY!"

Rohan remembered standing at the plate and watching as the ball went over the wall, before flipping his bat behind him and making his run around the plates to home base. He remembered high fiving everyone in the dugout, before throwing his helmet to the fans in the stands. If only the Foxes could have won that game, instead of losing 5-3 in fourteen innings...


The day the Foxes nearly forced a game seven and had a chance to win a championship was the best and worst day in Foxes history, and nobody knew that better than Xavier Leandros, the manager of the team. He was reminded of that day as he watched his team practice at training camp, and he watched one of his pitchers throw a slider that was hit deep by the wall. They were wrapping up training for the day, and then they were going to head to Territory Nine for some training matches against college teams there. "Alright boys, let's wrap it up. I have a surprise for you all, and that is that we're heading to Rozada, Territory Nine. We're going to stay there after flying into Arija, to use this trip to both relax before the season and to play some smaller teams to get in practice before the preseason officially starts."

All of the team except for the two players who had been called up to the national team would be going on this trip, and as they finished their training, they boarded buses to take them to the airport to fly to Territory Nine. Xavier boarded last, sitting down near the front with the rest of the staff, and he checked his phone to find a text from the general manager of the team; 'You sure you want to take this trip? The news says that the Patrikfjordhur volcano is set to erupt. It might catch your flight.'

Xavier sighed and sent back a reply; 'It'll be fine... If there's trouble, they'll turn the flight around and give us a refund.'

'Alright... Stay safe and look at the news before you get on the plane.'

SCHILTZBERG OFF TO QUICK START!

Schiltzberg got on the board sweeping its first three-game series of this World Baseball Classic. The baseball world is not surprised to see the defending champs dominating the dojo as usual. Sports commentator Joe Withridge said of the team, "They just have to keep going. They have to keep on the streak that they have been on since last season. And, of course, that will be hard, and it will be hard for the team to live up to its expectations, but I think they will do well." This brings up the idea of expectations, and Schiltzberg certainly has high expectations for this season, but that is not always necessarily a good thing. There have been several teams in the past that have been expected to go far and then have collapsed, including the Schiltzberg themselves just two years ago, when they were knocked out prematurely, getting swept in the first round after winning the previous tournament.

"We definitely have some fans that are hard to please," said William McKey jokingly after pitching game one to an 11-1 complete game victory, "but then it is great when you get to please them. They are such a rowdy and crazy crowd, and they bring a certain energy to the game. I am just afraid of what will happen if we disappoint them. That is why we have to try our best to make it as far as we can this season." McKey says it jokingly, but there is a lot of truth in what he is saying. Every team is bound to lose at some point, and the longer the winning streak, the harder it is to accept a loss. Chances are, though, Schiltzberg will live up to the high expectations.

Schiltzberg now goes into the next series with a 3-0 record, but they are still in second place, because Jeckland also is undefeated and has a better runs differential. The next series will be critical for Schiltzberg, as it will hopefully give them an early lead over the other teams in the division, especially Jeckland. Schiltzberg has done everything it could to succeed, and its players are in as good of shape as ever, so they are bound to do well.

Anacondas Drop Third Game, Fall to Last in Group

You could hera the anger and disappointment hang off of Manager Tristen Smalls' voice after the game when he addressed the media. "We didn't show up to play, we failed to capitalize on our oppurtunities, and we got outplayed. We need to focus on finishing these things out before our next series, and I'm frankly to irked that we lost to continue this conversation." This comes on the heel of the Anacondas third game against Drawkland. The Aancondas had won their firts and lost their second, given them an overall record of 2-3. If they could win this game, they would have a .500 record, and they'd be in better shape when it came to later down the line. However, it was not to be. In a low-scoring, high-hitting game, the Anacondas would drop four runs to the Base Corps to lose 4-2, putting them in the group's cellar.

Boh teams got a runner on in the first inning, with Navis singling after his teammate struck out, and Lain doubled to start his team's half of the inning. However, both opportunities fizzled out as quickly as they came, leaving a runner stranded for each team. Turnhill was blazing the second inning, strking out the first batter before causing the second batter that inning to ground out straight ot the second baseman on a 2-2 count. The inning came to an end soon after when Arlington popped up to Turnhill. The Anacondas half went a little bit differently, as the first batter up for the Anacondas reached first base after the throw to first from the third baseman came up short, allowing Trifort to make it to first safetly. However, the next batter hit into a fielder's choice, and the other two struck out and then flew out. The inning came to an end without another whisper.

The top third is when a team finally got on the board, and that was the Drum Corps. McCalister started off the inning with a hard ground ball that split the first and second baseman. After gaining a 3-1 count, Turnhill threw a little too close to Renato, and he advanced to first. With two men on, Knight stepped up to the plate and cracked a liner over the first baseman's outstretched glove. Even though the ball was stopped by the right fielder, McCalister came in from second to score the first run of the game. However, the Drum Corps didn't get anything else that inning, and the Anacondas came up to bat. With one out, Lain doubled in an impressive fashion, but he was left stranded as the next two players went down quickly.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Anacondas managed to load up the bases, but it went nowhere. Drawkland brought in a new pitcher, Sault, and the first batter he faced doubled to right field. The throw made it to the base a spilt second before Lin did, but he slid under the tage and was pronounced sfae by the umpire. The next batter saw three balls and a strike before the fifth pitch landed in the dirt, granting him a free pass to first. Next, Jehosez caught a pitch on the bottom left corner and cracked it towards the left field line. It slid just under the first baseman. This loaded the bases, and the Anacondas had a golden oppurtunity to take the lead when Defelt struck out looking on an offspeed pitch. Then, Hector hit a ball that seemed like it could go the distance, but it curved foul and fell short. Unfortunately, it didn't go into the stands, either, and the left fielder got under, recording the second out. Turnhill then came up, but she hit it directly towards the second baseman, who tagged the base and recorded the final out that inning, ending the Anacondas' hope for a run. Drawkland wouldn't waste their oppurtunity, though.

The pitcher, Sault, amnaged to get a 2-2 count, and then he whacked the ball for a hard single to right field. This was followed up with a four pitch walk to Kinght, granting the Base Corps runners on both first and second. On the first pitch, Mike Navis pounded the ball into the ourfield, granting him a single. However, the third base coach decided that Sault had a chance to score, so he pointed him home. The tag came in, but the umpire called safe, saying that Sault slid in before the tag was applied. That was all she wrotefor that inning, but Drawkland wasn't done scoring.

The very first pitch of the top of the sixth was a potato that hung over the middle of the plate far too long, and Sean Navis crushed the ball deep over the left field short wall, and the Base Corps had a three to nothing lead. It looked like Frenline Dlepha was going to be shut-out the entire game, but the eighth inning proved otherwise. The Frenline Delpha scoreless streak came to an end on the first pitch as Trifort grabbed a hold of a meaty pitch and crushed it well over the high well over in right field. As it sailed over the wall the crowd sprang to its feet and started screaming, their spirits revitalized by the homer. Jehosez didn't help the noise when he reached base on a scorching double. This brought up Defelt, who took 1-2 count and peppered the ball into right field. However, the ball landed short of the wall, and it was caught. However, Jehosez tagged up into third, providing the perfect run oppurtunity with one out. Hector took full advantage of this situation, and he grounded a single that allowed Jehosez to score standing up. The Anacondas had driven it within one. Unfortunately, Berkins grounded out on a double play to end the inning, and that was all she wrote for scoring for the Ancondas. However, Drawkland wasn't quite done.

Drawkland started off the top of the ninth with two out, from a strike-out and fly-out respectively. However, McCalister wasn't content with the score as it was, so he cracked a single to right field that landed just before the fielder got to it. The next batter, Roth, took a strike looking, and then he clobbered the ball to right field, which allowed McCalister to score all the way from first base. Knight struck out, and the Anacondas got runners on first and third in the bottom half of the ninth, but in the end, the Base Corps had defeated the Frenline Delpha Anacondas in two of their three games in Hilltop Treefort Indoor Arena. The Anacondas will be traveling to Anglatia tomorrow for a three game series against the Redcaps.

Anglatian rotation puts in work, Redcaps defeat Gregoryisgodistan 2-1 in series

The Redcaps had a good start to a tournament, winning two out of three games against their first opponents, but they did even better to win two out of three against the number two ranked team in the world, a team that they had no business beating. Emperor Colden was seen at the Bank of Ross Park in the capital for the home games, and maybe his presence was what spurred on the team to victory. While the first game ended in a victory for the Bat Slaves, and one where they scored seven runs, the second and third game were both wins for the Redcaps, and Leif Erlunder only allowed three hits in the last game. The Storm pitchers all have put in work for the team so far, with all the leaders in strikeouts being players from their rotation. Arianne Venczel leads the team in strikeouts so far with sixteen after one start and one appearance from the bullpen.

Home run power isn't something that the team is built around, but it was a factor in their most recent win. Rohan Narang, most known for his home run to force extra innings in the Championship Series back home against the Underfell Storm, hit two homers in the 4-3 home win over the Bat Slaves, striking both balls into left field for two run and solo homers in the ninth and twelfth innings respectively. For Foxes fans, it won't be a surprise, as Narang led the team in batting average last season, and also accounted for 6 WAR for the Foxes because of his home run production and baserunning skills.

After two series, Leif Erlunder is likely to move up in the rotation and Arianne Venczel may move to the bullpen because of her good performance coming off the bench. While the team has been successful so far and is in first place in Group C, Manager Brian Iyer has stated that the job is not done yet and that the team isn't done adjusting.

SCHILTZBERG STILL ON ROLL

After another great series, Schiltzberg is still leading its division with a whopping 8-1 record. Schiltzberg continues down its path of rampage, as they blow by The Sword Bloke, sweeping the series. Schiltzberg still has a ways to go before clinching anything, and the tournament is still afoot, but they have looked really good so far. Ducky Fitzhugh led the team through game one of this series with William McKey on the mound for his second appearance this tournament, and they both supported each other to a blowout victory. The Sword Bloke scored first in the second inning, but then Fitzhugh hit a grand slam in the sixth to give Schiltzberg a 6-2 lead. McKey struggled to maintain the lead, giving up four more runs, but his offense backed him up, scoring five more runs before the end of the game. The final score of game one of this series was 11-6, and it really showed Schiltzberg's untouchable offensive power and strength as a team unit to defeat a competitive team like The Sword Bloke.

Game two was a very different story, compared to game one. Schiltzberg scored first in the third inning off of a single by Mark Daly that drove in Thomas Saiz, but got only three hits and a two walks in the entire game. The Sword Bloke got five hits and three walks, but were still only able to score one run in the bottom of the eighth inning, which was a close call for Schiltzberg, when they were able to get out of a jam with the bases loaded and no outs, only allowing one run. The stalemate continued, and neither team reached base in either the ninth or tenth innings. Then with two outs in the top of the eleventh, The Sword Bloke's fatiguing reliever let a ball slip over the plate for Chris Vrooman, who sent it flying over the left field wall and into the seats. Vrooman was finally able to break his slump, as this was his first hit in his last 24 at bats, going back to a single he had gotten in game three of the first series they played against the Purple Rabbits. The Sword Bloke was unable to score in the second half of the inning, despite getting a leadoff double, and so Schiltzberg took the victory.

Game three showed Schiltzberg's ability to comeback from a seemingly large deficit and exert its power and dominance to dominate a game. The Sword Bloke struck early, scoring three runs in the first two innings, which put Schiltzberg in a quick 3-0 hole. Schiltzberg's bats were still dead, as only one runner reached base in the first three innings, but then all of a sudden in the fourth inning everything came alive. To start off the inning, Ducky Fitzhugh, Chris Vrooman, and Francis Thom went back-to-back-to-back to tie the game, which also marked the first time that Schiltzberg had gone back-to-back-to-back in an international tournament. Manual Villegaus doubled, then was driven in by a single from Thomas Saiz, giving Schiltzberg a 4-3 lead. Then Bob Rutledge sent a ball sailing high and deep, just barely over the centerfield wall, and before you knew it, Schiltzberg had just had a six-run inning, making it 6-3 in their favor. Neither team was able to do anything in the middle innings, but Schiltzberg came back for more late in the game. In the eighth, Schiltzberg loaded the bases, and then all three runners were driven in on a three-RBI double hit to right-centerfield by Thomas Saiz. The Sword Bloke fought back, as they scored two on a home run in the bottom of the eighth, making it 9-5 with Schiltzberg still in the lead. The final blow came in the ninth inning, when Schiltzberg went on a final rampage and salt in the wound for a thrice defeated The Sword Bloke team. Ducky Fitzhugh led off the inning with a home run, and then two batters later, Francis Thom hit a solo shot too. Thomas Saiz singled and was driven in by Rutledge, who was driven in by pinch hitter Donald Carolan. Ducky Fitzhugh was ejected from the game amid the ninth inning drama for bad sportsmanship, as he was caught taunting the opposing players from the dugout. There was no suspension. The Sword Bloke was unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, and thus finished Schiltzberg's sweep.

JAMES RHODIERE: LONG MAN, VETERAN...STAR?

Nobody expected James Rhodiere to do much coming into the 2022 season: the veteran, recently picked up from the scrap heap by South Falls, had a career 4.58 ERA in parts of eight seasons in the LBL (and two more in Eirelia). The pitcher's main offering was a frankly mediocre sinker that had little spin or command - while it tended to get ground balls, most of the ground balls were hard-hit and the end result was a parade of singles. The lefty also flaunted a poor changeup that was little more than a change of pace. And while he'd tinkered with a slider earlier in his career, the result was nothing short of disaster.

Of course, when the team's ace, Josh Foukes, and third starter, Michael Emory, were both injured, South Falls had little choice but to throw Rhodiere in as the fifth starter and see how things went. In his first start, the thirty-five-year-old went seven innings, giving up just one hit, a solo home run, while striking out six. South Falls won, 7-1, and Rhodiere was the hero. His second start, against the first-place New Llama Cyclones, spanned six and two-thirds innings, with a two-run double the only blemish on his line - six hits, seven strikeouts. His third start, though, was more than rocky - he'd started to throw his slider again, oddly enough - and he only lasted four and one-thirds innings, giving up six runs, bringing his ERA up to 4.50, the sort of ERA you'd expect from James Rhodiere.

But a local sportswriter picked up on the slider, and wrote accordingly:

James Rhodiere didn't look so great, but although his sinker had less sink than usual and his changeup less bite, it wasn't that. His old slider was back - one with more spin but less horizontal movement than the previous iteration, last spotted in 2020. The results weren't great. His sinker and changeup were distinctly ordinary, yes, but the real contributing factor to his early exit was his new, cutter-esque breaking ball. Will the surprise fifth-starter (2-1, 4.50 ERA, 18 IP, 15 K/5 BB) keep it? Who knows? One things for sure - if South Falls wants to stay in the pennant race with both Foukes and Emory out, they'll need Rhodiere to keep up the success of his first two starts.


In Rhodiere's first two starts, the sinker did have more bite and more spin, the changeup was decently-commanded, and things overall looked good for the veteran. And then:

The lefty had bounced back in style, retiring the first seventeen batters and carrying a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He'd struck out eleven, odd for a sinkerballer - the same sportswriter began to investigate.

The breaking ball is back - and better than ever. This time, it's definitely a cutter, but traces of the old slider still lurk within.

"We [Rhodiere and pitching coach J.R. Sheffield] played around with my old slider grip - he wanted to add something to my arsenal, or hitters would find me out. Shef[field] adapted it into a sort of cutter grip, I was already comfortable with throwing it because it was similar to my slider, and things looked good out there," said Rhodiere when asked about the new pitch.

Rhodiere's cutter is hard - a notch quicker than his primary offering, the sinker - in fact. It breaks sharply horizontally, but does so late - righties were nearly powerless against it, while lefties have to anticipate its quick movement. With the pitch sharing speed and arm slot with his sinker, though, that's harder than it sounds.


With the new cutter - surprisingly well-commanded for a pitch picked up on the fly - Rhodiere went into the all-star break with seventy-five innings of 1.92-ERA ball, with seventy-two strikeouts to just nineteen walks, making the all-star team. He stayed in the rotation for the rest of the year, going 12-5 with a 1.97 ERA. His performance led him to the national team, coached by Alex Cameron, who manages South Falls.

"We saw Rhodiere going out and pitching strong, and we decided to take a flyer on him," said Cameron when asked. "He doesn't have the track record, sure - but you don't need a track record to pitch that well."

Rhodiere's performance on the national team has been equally sterling. In the Tigers' second game, against Chromatika, he came in to get two outs, which he did successfully. The next day, when starter Kyle Hogan was scratched, he stepped in to throw six and two-thirds very respectable innings on the world's greatest stage. Against Ko-oren last night, he threw three innings, allowing two runs. In his ten and one-thirds innings, he's posted a 2.61 ERA.

How has he done so? On the back of the same sinker-cutter combination that took him to the All-Star Game. His command is impeccable, his movement very good. While the rest of the bullpen blows up (especially Troy Vasquez, whose career path is distressingly close to that of Nick Bowden's), Rhodiere has become the star.

COSUMAR - Two heartbreaking losses were the catalyst for the Indios to salvage the third game against the world number 6. In their first two games, the bullpen collapsed at the latter stages giving the home team the lead late in the innings.

At the first game at Orangi Field, the defense of the Indios were amazing, with no runs allowed in the first six innings, and scoring three runs early on. However, when May Veluz relieved the young Luningning Viola, the Cosumarites scored four runs in the seventh inning, and another one at the bottom of the eighth. The Indios scored one run courtesy of Paterno Macapulay, but Mercy Labarez' hit at the ball was only good for a flyout, sealing game 1 to the hosts.

The second game was even more heartbreaking. Leading 2-0 before the bottom of the fifth, Cosumar started scoring runs, one a piece for the next three innings to snatch the lead at 3-2. They extended the lead with another run and a grand slam to extend the lead to six runs, which was considered insurmountable for the Barangayans.

The Indios stormed to a 5-0 lead at the final game, but at the bottom of the fourth Cosumar started scoring again. Luckily, they were only able to score three runs for the Indios to secure victory and keep the lead in the standings of Group D. Next for them is a home defense against Nassau Hessen.
