West Phoenician Tennis Glory Cut Short

It's all over for the West Phoenician Tennis team at the Astyrian Tennis Grandslam with the last member of the contingent Jon Swanston losing in the second round.

Jon Swanston (KWP) 6 6 1
Hollie Gratton (ETN) 7 7 6

The nation of West Phoenicia was crushed with the loss and as the team flew home questions have arised as to why so many players from certain nations were still prolific in the game while other nations lost whole squads by round 1.

While not wanting to accuse the organization of tampering. The West Phoenician Tennis Association has promised to investigate said claims.

The Grand Slam wooden spooners

There have been many devastating losses throughout the Astyrian Slam, whether matches between two Electrumites, where one Electrumite is certain to end their competition, or whether the top seed losing in an upset first round draw, like Ardil Navsal did last in the very Grand Slam. However, just who are the biggest losers? In common round robin competition, the wooden spoon champions are the team who scores the least amount of points in a particular season. The Kylx Cup is a competition between the biggest losers of football competitions across the multiverse. Can the same logic apply to tennis, where there are bracketed tournaments? It is indeed possible, and in today's article we will show you how we do that.

So, in tennis, each match is between two players, and only one advances to the next round. This continues until all the players are knocked out. If we looked at the Final for instance, the winner is in 1st place, and the loser is the runner up, or in second place. If we subscribe to the logic that if the winner can beat the runner up, they can surely beat everyone else ranked below them, then we can say that the semifinal loser to the 1st placer would be in 3rd place, and the semifinal loser to the runner up would be in fourth place. If we continue down the line, and we look at the losers to the losers, so we would be looking at the loser who lost to the loser etc. who lost to the 4th placer who lost to the 2nd placer, we can determine who would come 128th, our wooden spooner. In other words, we are looking for the biggest chain of losers.

Now lets see who are the biggest losers from the past few grand slams.

2015

Cenian Open III: Greg Meares who lost to Mann Heter who lost to Luh Putu Yundari who lost to Kika Dovan who lost to Kate Logan who lost to Maggie Cho who lost to Ardil Navsal who lost to Riley Escobar

Electrum Slam II: David Cho who lost to Johnnie Foster who lost to Alice Williams who lost to Hjugo van de Hoett who lost to Stephen Perez who lost to Malcolm Press who lost to Kika Dovan who lost to Johmer Vales

TOCAO: Neil Ennis who lost to Andrew Simmons who lost to Luh Putu Yundari who lost to Stephen Perez who lost to Ardil Navsal who lost to Charles Sayer who lost to Marla Gerard who lost to Marisa Maradona

2014

Cenian Open II: Dustin Willinger who lost to Al Montis de Surmar who lost to Botack Andiam who lost to Amancio Raimundo Belo who lost to Aline Luiza Romao*

Electrum Slam: Ivo Kublinka who lost to Betty the Homeless Tadpole who lost to Botack Andiam who lost to Brendan Hernandez who lost to Oscar Varscara who lost to Aline Luiza Romao who lost to Al Montis de Surmar who lost to Elaine Foyner**

2013

Cenian Open: Jonathan Fana who lost to Vojtech Jona who lost to Brett Roley who lost to Dylan Grapnuere who lost to Fred Perry who lost to Jared White who lost to Gunther Helguson

* Held under the Round Robin to R16 format, though the biggest loser in their qualification group was Tim D'Aub (AND)
** Was a qualifier, the biggest loser in their qualification group was Gyylennianothantroppee Po Jr. (JAC)

Other procedural notes:
We're unsure about the status of the Cenian Open as a Grand Slam in 2013, but we will count it nonetheless. This is all the Grand Slams this author remembers. If you can think of anymore, please telegram us, we will be doing doubles shortly.

As you can see, the biggest losers have varied from soccer player (Jonathan Fana) to complete unknown, Ivo Kublinka to quite accomplished in their own right, Greg Meares. It is just unfortunate to see them land such an undesirable distinction, but that's the way the maths works out.

Now that the second round had finished up and all the members on the team played their games, it was back to rest and relaxation while they still could. Ceallachán faced a long and tough game, and managing to pull out with a win in the final set to take the game, while Llinos somehow was able to catch a lucky break and after pushing it won three sets in a row taking her game. Ástríður and Hermanni probably had the easiest of the games this round due to them facing each other, at least that guaranteed that one of them would have made it to the next round no matter what. Ástríður won that game over her fellow team member though.

Then on the Doubles side of the event things did not really go their way, with Ainsley / Flannán losing pretty quickly and Alwyn / Ceallachán started out strong but then lost the last two sets. The list Asløg was working on with Euan now looked even shorter, but the fact any were still on it was rather great.
Round 2
Birger
Flannán
Mark

Ceallachán
Ástríður
Hermanni
Llinos

And that was just for the Singles side, they still had Birger / Hermanni and Dagmar / Ástríður on the Doubles side, which was just as great since their luck on that side was nearly non-existent.
Currently traveling across the United States. Still up for any conversations though.

Astyrian Slam News Roundup

Ethanian player Gary Forcen arrested
Nikolian authorities have arrested Gary Forcen in the Carigrad airport yesterday, the police confirmed, after the Ethanian tennis player was charged with a number of counts, including attempt to use a bomb, possession of a bomb, creation of bomb, attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, and other charges in relation to his failed plot to blow up the Katarina III tennis center in his first round match against Botack Andiam, which the Cenian won in straight sets.

The bomb had been apparently placed in the player's box and was set to detonate at the end of the match, when Andiam, Forcen, and the referee were shaking hands. The Nikolian police estimate that the bomb was powerful enough to destroy the entire stadium, and it was unclear why the bomb failed.

According to a Nikolian police official, who wished to remain anonymous due to his proximity to the investigation, said that Forcen was remaining uncooperative with the authorities on his motivations. The police had provided Forcen with a lawyer, and the said lawyer has indicated that he believes his climate would plead not guilty and bring in outside counsel from Ethane, his country of origin.

Head of Costenho Tennis Federation calls West Phoenician investigation 'absurd'
After a news release from the Kingdom of West Phoenicia indicated that their tennis federation was investigating claims of 'tampering', the head of the Costenho Tennis Federation, Leonardo Erasmo Souza, who is in Carigrad, called the claims 'absurd'. The news article from West Phoenicia cast suspicions on 'why so many players from certain nations were still prolific in the game while other nations lost whole squads by round 1'. Souza responded to the WP News Networks claims that the network should check the veracity of its claims before publishing 'unfounded allegations.'

'Any look at the ranking and seeding lists by any casual onlooker would determine why some players were advancing over others, especially in the case of most, if not all, of the Phoenician players. I don't know why they are suspicious just because they are losing to players with higher ranks than them. The ranks usually indicate level of skill, and thus one would expect a ranked player to advance further than an unranked one, like the Phoenician players are. I think they are just jealous and tired of losing.'

'Furthermore, I do not know what the Tennis Federation or the tournament could have done to "tamper" the results of the tournament. If the scores of a match had been misrepresented, the error would have been caught right away, but I do not believe this has been the case in any of the matches. Perhaps the West Phoenician media is referring to the draw, but I assure you, it was conducted using a randomized number generator to randomly assign each player a place in the draw. We believe this is to make the draw as fair as possible and without any possible bias.'

OOC: This article is not meant to be OOCly denigrating to West Phoencia. There actually is a ranking spreadsheet which gives the rankings of tennis player, and as you might know, NS Sport results are used with a combination of Rank, Roleplay, and Randomness, so there's probably a reason why your players are losing and others are winning: one of the three above.

Costenho players have excellent chances in third round
Three Costenho players have advanced to the third round, and all 3 are playing later today. There is a good chance of at least two players reaching the fourth round of the Astyrian Slam and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Natalia Emilia Garcia plays Thomas Hutchon of Ethane; Andre Pedrinho Delgado plays Giorgio Irani of Eastfield Lodge; and Aline Luiza Romao plays Ngurah Putra Muliawan of Pemecutan.

All three are confident about their chances going into the next round. Garcia has never reached this far at a Grand Slam, upsetting 18th seed Dioro Hansil along the way. Delgado is seeing a return to the form that won him an Olympic Gold Medal in singles in the Kytler Peninsulae and continues his momentum of a semifinal performance in Novo Lisboa as a qualifier. He upset 20th seed Carmichael Brown in the second round to reach the third round. Finally 30th seed Romao won in a tough match against Mark Athalstein of Ferret Civilization to reach the third round.

As the event continued along, it was only normal for the amount of players per team playing to dwindle, but the fact that a new team like the Ferret one was still going was always something else. Most of them figured by now it they all would be out or that one of the other team members would still be going, but that was not the way that it was. Still not a bother, just meant that more time was put into practice and less into just messing around and exploring or what not.

During the games Birger continued to impress the team coming in from out of nowhere with great luck, while Flannán put up a grand last stand pushing for it but in the end losing the final set. Meanwhile the Doubles side continued to go more or less way better than expected, Säde / Llinos played a losing game against the best team on the Doubles side. Which in those cases it was always more of a learning event than anything else, Dagmar / Ástríður's game went a little better against the fifteenth best, managing to pull out with a win. Birger / Hermanni continued to keep up the luck Birger had on the Singles side to pull out a just as impressive win against the eleventh best Doubles team.

No matter how the second half of this part of the event went, they still had a team member able to advance into the next round on both the Singles and Doubles side. Still holding out for a chance to get at least a mediocre place in the positioning when it was all over. Hoping the luck would at least get them that far as they continued to try their best.

Tennis player arrested while trying to activate a bomb in Nikolia

Unfortunately the Astyrian Slam held this year in Carigrad's Katarina III Stadium didn't pass without an incident. After finding an explosive device in one of the player's boxes at the stadium, the Nikolian Police Forensics Lab worked hard to discover any possible clues that will lead to a person who placed the bomb. Within hours, the results showed a tennis player Gary Forcen from Ethane who arrived in Carigrad for the tournament. Earlier today, Forcen was seen at the Tsar Konstantin International Airport trying to flee the country and was quickly arrested by a team of Nikolian Gendarmerie while approaching a gate to board the plane.
Tennis player was then brought to interrogation but remained uncooperative to the officials and refused to state his motivations. The Nikolian officials said that they have contacted Ethanian officials and that they are tightly cooperating to resolve this situation. The Ethanian tennis player is facing life sentence after being charged for terrorism, illegal possession of an explosive device, illegal manufacturing of an explosive device, attempted mass murder and attempted mass destruction. By the laws of Nikolia, extradition is only available to the nations that have bilateral agreement with Nikolia or members of Eternal Accords of the Three Crowns.
Stay tuned for more news.

(2) Botack Andiam vs Ceallachan Amlaoibh
Botack Andiam has enjoyed an excellent clay court season so far: reaching two Tier 1 finals, in Antillia and over in Beograd, and winning the one in Beograd as well. Andiam could become world number one if he reaches the final of the Astyrian Slam, but first, he has to play against Ceallachan Amlaoibh, one of the fine Ferret players who has taken the tennis world by storm. Amlaoibh has had quite a few wins on the NSTT in his short career and reached the quarterfinals in Novo Lisboa and the fourth round in Antillia, indicating he can play with the big boys. Most of the ferrets, which are very short (coming up to around 3 feet in height, have trouble on their service games but excel in the returns, meaning there will likely be quite a few breaks when a ferret is in the game. (Some even wonder how ferrets can play tennis at all, with their tails always getting in the way). But Andiam poses a dilemma for Amlaoibh: he has one of the strongest serves on tour, regularly in the 140 miles-per-hour range, and hits quite a few aces. On the second serve, he's been known to hit aces, and his kick serve can be particularly devastating - especially for the diminutive ferrets. In fact, most of the losses their top players have faced have come from big servers - such as Andy Amada, Andiam (who defeated the top Ferret, Dagmar Lusaidh, in Antillia), and Dioro Hansil. Therefore it's not a bit of a stretch to say that Andiam will win most, if not all, of his service games. But Amlaoibh has shown gutsy promise on the return - yet Andiam is confident of his service power. Finally, on the return, Andiam has excellent groundstrokes as well, hits plenty of return winners, and has generally good shot-making as a whole. So it's not a stretch to see Andiam winning this matchup.

Winner: Andiam

(9) Andy Amada vs (27) Felice Mareaux
This is one of the few matches in the third round, and the only one in the bottom half, to feature two seeded players, and it would be a cruel irony of the draw to see one of them go down in this round. Both have been stellar clay-court players so far, and both have won one title over the previous Astyrian Series: Amada in Nova Lisboa, Mareaux in Albergaria, as a qualifier no less. Amada is winning this tie on basis of seeding and experience; he has a year more on the tour than his fellow teen player and much more clay court experience, and has reached quite a few finals and semifinals on the clay courts. But Mareaux has shown flashes of brilliance, and in the aforementioned Albergaria final, she defeated Amada in two close sets, 7-5, 7-5. Amada, though, has come back from that defeat to win the title in Novo Lisboa without dropping a set, while Mareaux has fizzled since, winning only a few matches in the runup to the Astyrian Slam. So Amada should be winning this based off of form as well. Finally, Amada's style, of powerful forehands and a good serve to back him out, produces results and entertains the crowd as a bonus, often winning points with a stylish shot or tweener lob. It would be a shame for even one of these fine players to exit the tournament, but one must.

Winner: Amada

Omar Perez vs Estela Fenton-Millington
On paper, this should be an easy matchup for the 234th-ranked Fenton-Millington, a thing that you shouldn't be able to say in most circumstances. But her opponent is Omar Perez of San Jose Guayabal: unranked in the international tennis rankings. Both players have exploited an easy draw to reach this stage, the best performance for both at a Grand Slam (on Perez's first tournament, no less): Perez defeated Maya Cassington, who defeated the tour's standout player and this section's top seed, 14th seed Dagmar Lusaidh, in the first round, while Fenton-Millington defeated 31st seed and Astyrian favorite Dusan Ivanovic in the first round as well. Game-wise, not much is known about Fenton-Millington, who hasn't made it out of qualifying in the past couple of events on the NS Tennis Tour. Perez, meanwhile, has shown streaks of brilliance, and the clay court surface has shown to be a godsend for him: his powerful, spinning shots allow him to control the court from behind the baseline. This could be a close match, and the result will definitely bring a surprising player into the fourth round of the Astyrian Slam.

Winner: Perez

3 Left at Astyrian Slam
Carigrad, Nikolia

The 2016 Astyrian Slam has come to Round 16 and only 3 Pemecutanian players left in the tournament. They are (22) Maria Sophia Lubis, (23) Luh Putu Yundari and (5) Komang Antari/Kadek Andreawati. While others has to come home earlier. In Round 32, 4 Pemecutanian players lost in their match including (11) Ngurah Putra Muliawan.

Ayu Ratih Kemalasari begin this year competition in a nice way. She reach Round 32 and faced Birger Gwil of Ferret Civilization. Gwil begin the match in great way and crushed Kemalasari with 6-1. In second round Kemalasari take back and defeated Gwil also with 6-1. The third set played in a tight paced but eventually Gwil able to secure the set with 6-4. Kemalasari try to take the fourth set in order to stay in the tournament. But she lost control in the end of the set and eventually lost by 4-6 to Gwil.

(11) Ngurah Putra Muliawan played against (30) Aline Luiza Romao of Costa de Ouro. Muliawan able to secure the first set with 6-3. But Romao showed her experienced and outplayed Muliawan in the second set also with 6-3. Muliawan try to rise up in the third set but he eventually lost by 4-6. In the fourth set, Romao seems to be over the top and lead the set by 6-2.

Ilham Nugraha/Jayadi Ahmad has to faced (9) Joan Levitt/Deanne Smith of Electrum. Levitt/Smith win easily in the first set by 6-2 but Nugraha/Ahmad try their best to control the second set. They succeed despite had to played through a tie-break. Levitt/Smith didn't want to get stole by Nugraha/Ahmad again. They control the third set right from the start and give little room for Pemecutanian double to expand they play. Levitt/Smith eventually win the match by 6-2.

On the second day Round 32, a better result comes to Pemecutanian players. started with (22) Maria Sophia Lubis who met Hollie Gratton of Ethane. Lubis secured the first by 6-3 before losing her grip in the second set and give it to Gratton. Lubis rise up in the third set and able to control Gratton's growing play. She eventually took the third set by 6-4. In the fourth set, Lubis seems to be above the air. She win fast at first and lead all the way until 5-0. Gratton able to steal the 6th game but she lost the 7th game to Lubis and give her the victory point.

Another success story coming from (23) Luh Putu Yundari who met fellow Pemecutanian, Oka Sulastra (which is also her partner in double competition). Yundari play nicely and control the match right from the start. Sulastra can't progress with his play. Yundari eventually win by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0. In double competition, (5) Komang Antari/Kadek Andreawati win easily from Eva Fabia Soares/Vera Adriana Soares of Costa de Ouro. Antari/Andreawati played nicely and much more calmly during the match which resulted in a great way. They win the match by 6-3 and 6-2 to advance to the next round.

A slight disappointment coming from Indah Susanti who play hard by facing (3) Johmer Vales of Ceni. Susanti shocked the seeded player by taking the first set quite easily by 6-3. But Vales took control of the second set and reverse the position. He win the second set by 6-3. The next two set played in a very tight position. Susanti able to pushed tie-break in the third set although she eventually lost. In the fourth set, Susanti again try to force tie-break but unfortunately she didn't succeed this time.

In Round of 16, (22) Maria Sophia Lubis will facing (2) Botack Andiam of Ceni. While (23) Luh Putu Yundari has to meet (3) Johmer Vales also from Ceni. In double competition, (5) Komang Antari/Kadek Andreawati will facing Giorgio Irani/Clementina Travers of Eastfield Lodge who successfully defeated (10) Paul Quiront/Thierry Garzala of Neu Engollon in Round 32.

The end of the Round of 32 brought about many odd little surprises, the fact that they were still playing in the games and not just watching always held the top of the list. The end of the second part of the round saw the end of Ceallachán’s adventure in the games, being beat rather badly by the second best player in this event. Llinos was able to win her game against Ástríður, but that was just a friendly, if not purposely prolonged, game between two team mates. With one guaranteed to go forward with the journey, and one watching from the sidelines.

With that, they did not have to worry about the Doubles side of the event for today. And with that the list was updated to show just how fifty fifty their chances really were.
Round 3
Birger
Flannán

Ceallachán
Ástríður
Llinos

On the Doubles side all that was left was Dagmar / Ástríður, and then they only had the two left on the Singles side were Biger and Llinos. Was not much but it was holding true to the fifty fifty chance, which if held true they would at least be in it for one more round. If reality hit then they would be out by the next round.

Reality had decided to finally hit the rest of the team playing on this side of the event. Birger faced a tough game, almost pulling out in the end but instead ended up getting shown how a true tennis played the game. Dagmar / Ástríður ended up having to be dealt the same faith going up against the best team on the doubles side. In the end the team was out of of this side of the event, and only Llinos was left representing the entire team. If this was the end of the line for them here, they would have a lot more free time on their paws.

The team spent most of the time being lazy, or relaxing, as it was put to make it sound better. They could at least say they had made it to the Round of 16 out of all the other teams and individuals they had to face for the few of them to get there. Llinos had to go up against the twenty-seventh best player in the event, and given how things were it was still ridiculous that they were still rather unsure of how it could go for her.

Which when the time finally came it when just as odd as the expectations, with Llinos almost having a straight loss, recovered in the third set and managing to win the game. Pulling out in the tie breaking after a really tough set managing to pull out with a win. It was a really surprising, and it would seem like she was able to prove that she had the the skill to make something of herself.

Centralis Herald - Comment - Frank Liszt

The whole multiverse needs to get around Eura

In a surprise twist on this April the First, the sounds of the multiverse was abuzz with democracy, with the first ever Security-General of the World Assembly to be elected. Of the top ten candidates, the only sensible candidate is the Euran candidate, as they are firstly, our Rushmori brethren, but secondly, and most importantly they don't participate in the World Assembly that much. This removes the vested interests and corruption which could occur, as simply put, Eura is a nation based entirely on sports and culture, not diplomacy. It's time we dismantle the party machinery and apparatchik of the so called 'gameplayers', nations focused entirely on improving their self-worth in the World Assembly, using any means to do so. As sporting nations, and as nations who participate in cultural contests, vote Eura!

This is why I have compiled a guide to the top ten candidates, available here.

During the time that they had between the last games and the next games, the Ferrets had a lot of time to spare around with. Besides watching the other teams play their games, cheering on the Ceni players in the mostly all Ceni games. Llinos would be going up against the second best player, who was also of Ceni, and that same player beat out Ceallachán. But for now they just enjoy watching the games, and visiting all the different museums and such that this nation seemed to have a lot of. Practice a little with their last playing team member to at least continue to say that they tried. And keep on being lazy and going along.

As the games came to a close, at least to the Ferret team, there was a lot of excitement to see just how Llinos did. If it resulted in the continual dose of reality, they had a lot of free time to keep playing around with, if she made it, they still had a lot of time to mess with. They had enjoyed looking at the history of another nation, and the culture of the same one too. There was plenty of other stuff they could do too, this trip was certainly doubling as a good vacation trip.

After the one game involving Llinos was over, the whole team was now out of the event. Though they were happy to make it as far as they were able to. And yet another Ferret was able to prove themselves as a somewhat okay tennis player, at least in the eyes of the whole team. Even after losing in a pretty straightforward game against Botack.
