Welcome to the 28th World Bowl!

Dear 56 nations, hundreds of players and millions of fans. Welcome to the Multiverse's most storied, historic gridiron competition. The competition once again returns to Atlantian Oceania, but from Northeast to Northwest, as 56 nations look to prepare themselves ahead of their battle for glory, victory and achievement. Will Allamunic States, once again the World Champions, come back and defend the cup? Or will it be your nation who races against insurmountable odds to clench the trophy before your eyes and nation cheering?

Of course, the best way to increase your team's chances of success is to post a roster and regular roleplays. If you are unsure what these should look like, look at others' in this thread and read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, reading about How Gridiron Football Works should help you write a realistic RP.

ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC

Transportation

To arrive in Quebec you'll likely just want to fly in to the city that you will be playing in. The 8 cities going to be hosting the tournament, with all of them possessing a major airport served by most major airlines, including the giant Quebecois duo of Spiritair and Aeroquebec groups. Landing to Quebec, however, is still going to be a huge challenge: International flights are permitted to land and take off, but expect many delays on both departure and arrival due to mother nature behaving madly.

If you insist on arriving via waterways, poor you. Due to the worst winter in 50 year's time this Winter, all the ports are frozen and won't be used for transportational purposes.

While travelling inside country, there are main methods you can use for this. The railways here isn't as quick as it'd be with other nations (the maximum speed being 225km for the fastest train service), but they are extremely punctual/on-timerelatively punctual compared to other methods (one or two-hour delays are better than what you'd get in other options, with this bad of a weather), popularcramped (best option out of any right now) and frequent (one train per 30 minutes, with more coming due to demand), making it a very cost-effective and attractive option. Even with such situations the services in Quebec National Railways (QNR) are high-quality and well-maintained, so don't worry about your comfort while riding trains.

Quebec does possess a strong auto industry and cars are somewhat prevalent, so you can travel via cars if interested. This, however, is a very risky option for travelers due to icy and snowy road conditions in almost all highways and driving is not recommended. Same thing with buses.

As for aeroplanes, Flying between those cities are not recommended at all, due to weather conditions at all airports but Kingston, making the flights very risky for even the most veteran of pilots.

Lodging

There will be some hotels of high-calibre (at least 4 star ones) available in those cities. However, those 4 cities being medium-sized cities, there will be some issues. The same will not be guaranteed with the visiting fans as there will be mass influx of Quebecois citizens as well, to watch the games. Therefore it is recommended to make reservations 3-4 months ahead of the tournament, in order to guarantee your reservation in the hotels around the city.

If you are still in trouble of finding hotel or motel suites, there will be hotels, motels and other modes of accomodation available at your expense, on towns slightly far away from the venues(50km-100km). For more information please contact Tourism Quebec or for more specific information any tourism agency of the city/cities you'll be off to(OOC: TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec if you have any questions or so).

Weather

Royal Kingdom of Quebec is located in Temperate and Polar regions, with the cities located in varying degrees of climate zones so all 4 seasons can be experienced each year, but with different extremes. For those visiting anywhere but Kingston for this World Bowl, it's very likely that the snowfall will be extremely frequent. As this tournament is ICly held during January, in middle of worst snowstorm in 50 years, temperatures will be altered to following:

Rouyn-Noranda, Winnipeg, Chicoutimi: -15'C to -25'C, with lots of wind and snow
Kingston: -5'C to -10'C. Low snow precipitation but very windy
Quebec City: -15'C to -30'C. Not windy, but lots of ice and snow (70cm/day)
Saint John: -5'C to -8'C. Relatively warm, lack of wind but snowfalls will be very frequent
Sept-Iles: -15'C to -25'C. Low snow precitipation but very windy
Iqaluit: -30'C to -45'C. Good luck

This will not affect the train services, though it'll do more than enough job of freezing people up, as all of the games will be held outdoors.

Languages

There are three official languages in this nation: English, French and Korean. All 3 languages are taught in school curriculum and with great depth, causing most of the population to be at least trilingual. Additionally, in this part of the nation there are some other First Nations languages being recognised as regional languages and are used+learned to great depth in schools, so please note this when you're RPing in Quebec. Most Quebecois you'll meet are extremely polyglot and that will show with way they speak.

When it comes to linguistic status on city that you're RPing on/about, you're more than welcome to TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec about it.

Money

The national currency of Quebec is Quebecois Dollar, which is fairly expensive. The current exchange rate is $3 NS for 1 Quebecois pound. With the nation being rich with huge economy, almost everyone will have at least has a good deal of money here. So please don't feel surprised if the products are much more expensive here than back home, excluding alcohol.

Things you'll need in your stay, prices in NS Dollars (NS$) and Quebecois Dollars (Q$)

-Hotel: NS$ 35-400, Q$12-135
-Public transport in the cities: NS$2-$5, Q$0.7-1.7
-Bus transport to different cities: NS$5-50, Q$1.7-17
-Train transport to different cities: NS$6-80, Q$2-28
-Ferry between lakes: NS$5-$12, Q$1.7-4
-Flights between cities: NS$65-150, Q$22-50
-Average cost of food: NS$12-45, Q$4-15
-Sports tickets: NS$60-600, Q$20-200
-Bottle of water: NS$9, Q$3 (Sale of bottled water extremely limited, with public fountains providing very low interest for the people)
-Alcohol: NS$3-150, Q$1-50 per keg
-Public phone: NS$1.5 per call, Q$0.5 per call

Cuisine

Quebecois cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from dominant Korean and elegant French cuisine that came with settlers, as well as materials and existing food of the First Nations living in the area, Quebecois cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends and is the best mix of it all.

Quebecois cuisine is largely based upon rice, other diverse kinds of grains, vegetables, and meats(in this area moose and caribou, and to rare cases bears). The meals are noted for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. It varies on the personal preferences but often in every meal they eat at least some form of maple syrup, Kimchi and/or bread. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). In this part of the nation, fish are caught off the rivers and lakes to be eaten in whatever the way one prefers as well.

Ingredients and dishes vary by region to region, with many. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country.
Meals are regulated by cultural etiquette, which are very hard to follow for even the average Quebecois due to all the processes they take.

TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec for any questions.

Religion

Quebec is a religiously diverse country, though divided when it comes to dominant regions. In the cities where the World Cup of Hockey will be hosted, First Nations' religions are widely practiced, with Quebecois Catholic Church and Buddhism right behind. Due to these differences, all three levels of Government keeps some separation from any religions, though they still hold some influences in those levels and receive lots of funding. It is also not recommended to argue about politics or religion in Quebec, as political and religious apathy is not known....for most part.

Laws

Culturally and socially, Quebec is in bit of a mix. Another handy chart will be in place to explain some of Quebec's laws in place:

Recreational drugs: Legal, though selling them without licence can lead to up to $10,000 in fines and 5 years in jail.
Hard drugs: Illegal, with punishments up to $50,000 in fines and 15 years in jail for possession and consumption of the drugs
Prostitution: Legal, though people's attitudes about it will be very conservative in this part of the nation
Pornography: Legal, aside from child pornography(applies to any pornographic videos or anything else starring people up to 18 years of age). Possession of child pornography will land you straight in jail for 5 years, while production and distribution of it can lead to potential death sentence. So, don't try it as it's a big no-no.
Legal age for tobacco: Varies (16 in Val d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda, 19 in Churchill and Winnipeg, 18 in rest)
Legal age for alcohol: 16
Maximum BAC to drive: 0.03.
Saying the word 'Coconut': Legal

All the foreign citizens caught under the Federal and/or Provincial law will not be extradited, unless of a special order given by the Emperor, His Imperial Majesty the Jacques IX.

Host Venues

Winnipeg

Winnipeg, provincial capital and largest city of Manitoba province, is the true regional centre and gateway to Western Quebec. The city, having a large First Nations and Guayabalense population, is hotbed for most sports. Rugby is of no exception, with Western Force games always sold out and the team constantly raking me off the draws. Winnipeg is probably the most progressive city in the nation, with Greens dominating the provincial votes for past 2 decades. Expect the crowd to be largely consisted of the youth and early adults, but also with some countrysiders as well.

Matches: Group H, Round of Sixteen H, Quarterfinals A

Kingston

Kingston is the fifth most populated city in Quebec, and the 2nd largest city west of Montreal. Despite its northern location on the Calania, it is one of the warmest cities in the nation due to its Southernly location and experiences four distinct seasons. It is considered to be a culturally diverse city because half of its residents are immigrants, one positive and negative aspect of the city. And among the over 150 distinct ethnic origins who are represented there, over 180 languages and dialects are spoken, making it the true ethnic basket of the nation. Over the course of its history Kingston's served as the economic centre of Southwestern Quebec (Ontario-Frontenac provinces), and has rapidly developed over last 50 years, making one of the most attractive cities to live in. The city, however, is notable for 2 major problems plaguing its status as a true Quebecois metropolis compared to its competitors: lack of cultural infrastructure and lack of integration between many ethnic groups.

When it comes to football, Kingston's one of the strongest points on professional level in spite of its irrelevance in grassroots level: University of Kingston Varsity Blues have sucked in last 30 playoff-less years and its high school teams mediocre at best. But in spite of that the Argonauts games always sell out and with a winning organisation, the city rallies around its football team in Summers and early Winter. The fans there are expected to be professional and not overly passionate about the sport, but will explode on social and non-social media when asked to.

Rouyn-Noranda

One of the great pleasures of Quebec, it is the juxtaposition of cultures between the four solitudes within Canada. Through a landscape that is both virgin and scarred from nearly a century of extracting wealth from the mighty Great Tyrian Plains, this very windy, snowy and isolated city of 1.85 million people is memorable and standing out on its own.

The local Crees and Inuits are everywhere both in town and at the stadium, and the unique, passionate Aboriginal flavour in rival city of Val d'Or Val-d'Or, with the city itself being located at the native land and natives being 56% of the population, holds the torch of Abitibi-Temiscamingue province as ICly Minnesota of Quebec. The people and the area itself may be economically and mentally depressed, but are proud of their own cultures and will cheer for their teams to death. This diversity and uniqueness of following and thoughts in the city and the 4-million province in general has produced many professional athletes in sports where physicality is demanded, as well as lots of writers and workers in performing arts. It's also on its rise as a winter sports mecca, as well as native-led tourism industry, of Quebec.

With football, there's no place like Rouyn-Noranda. Due to lack of other sports team on summer season, Rouyn-Noranda area lives and breathes on its football: It goes like this: High school teams are usually played in 5,000-seaters (a rarity in Quebec), club football attended by hundreds of scouts and its college football team, the AIT Vikings (OOC: think of Green Bay, but with a huge city), ruling as the king of the sports when there's no challenger in Huskies hockey games.

This is no different on the actual games at Imperial Copper Stadium. The high capacity, high-energy crowd, and run-down charm lends a very cool old-school atmosphere to the 87-year old arena, making a true experience for football fans from other regions. With its proximity, right in middle of Abitibi Tech University in Noranda, more economically-depressed part of the downtown, it turns into utter madness whenever there's a game at the 92,300-seater with tailgates, house parties and orgies taking place on the 30km-radius. The stadium food consists of traditionally hot, substantial meat and fish dishes such as Flæskesteg (roast pork with crackling) or Kogt torsk (poached cod), but has lots of choices of alcohol and marijuana to support the diet. The music choices on the stadium are usually among the best in the nation, and the unique nature of Rouyn-Noranda fans make the game experiences here exceptional.

Matches:Group D, Round of Sixteen E, Semifinal B

Quebec City

Quebec City is the second largest and the capital city of the nation. Compared to other cities, it is particularly a Franco-Korean (with latter more dominant) city, which makes playing in/visiting the city quite unique (think of Paris combined with Jongro quarter of Seoul). Buildings tend to be very low-rise and districts relatively divided, due to long history associated with the city that still remains in the locals, who probably lived here for almost all their lives or moved here because of government jobs or family reasons. The general demographics tend to be slightly older than national average, and they may be considered as old-timed, historic and snobby. There are certainly lots of places to visit: The city is home to 24 museums, 56 theatres and over 100 cultural institutions in place, with many artisans producing works that were in place as early as few centuries ago.

Chicoutimi

One of the nation's most ancient cities, Chicoutimi's not a force to ignore. Formed around 6 "ancient houses", it is very famous for being a centre of culture and folk traditions. A collection of nine encompassing villages, the surrounding area maintains many ancient traditions, making it the biggest living scene of ancient Quebec. People are expected to be particularly careful with their customs, and reasonable grip in Korean and French will do them way more favour than in other parts of the nations.

Matches: Group B, Round of Sixteen D, Quarterfinals B

Saint John

Saint John is a city of 1.85 million people, making it the second largest city in the Atlantic Quebec and largest in Acadie province. Known as the Steel City due to over 200 businesses and 3 key steel corporations operating in the city, its status as global industry centre and highly-emerging creative wealth gives the area with renowned museums, medical centers, parks, research centers, libraries, a vibrantly diverse cultural district. Blessed with its location on the heart of the Fundy, Saint John's now considered the best city to live in the Maritime Quebec.

Matches to be hosted:Group E, Round of Sixteen F, Semifinal A

Sept-Iles

Sept-Iles is the largest and capital city of Nord-Est province, with the population of 325,000. It is nestled at the south side of Quebec's largest plain (The Great Northern Plains) and The Taebaek Mountains, which stretch along the southern edge of Northeastern Quebec that encompasses Nord-Est and Labrador provinces. Geologically isolated from most parts of the country, Sept-Iles was able to preserve its own distinct culture and to date it has a tendency of being politically and culturally more conservative.

Its pockets of attractiveness lie towards the sea, particularly near Gyeongpo Bay, while its cultural hotspots – well-preserved traditional, old-era buildings and the 400-year-old shamanist Dano Festival - are well supported by the modern attractions promoting the unique region of Nord-Est. When it comes to sports, Sept-Iles is another college market that is valued heavily by the grassrotts fan. Due to the same reason as Rouyn-Noranda, adding to even more isolated location this northeastern city has, Sept-Iles roots heavily on its college teams. The locals will celebrate or cry depending on how their games went, and fights, bets and other activities are very common on game days. Expect this to translate into the games, with all age groups in attendance: the elderly coming with their friends and locals hosting tailgates everywhere with their stock of fish and squid.

Iqaluit

Iqaluit is a city of 750,000 people, most of them Inuits. With average winter temperature of -27'C, It is by far the coldest major city in Quebec, located right in the Esquarian Arctic. Therefore, most of the transportation is done through subways and underground hallways, which are often well known for being insulating, as well as luxurious. The city is extremely well known for its love of hockey, having 25,000 hockey arenas and rinks in a city of 750,000, but football is well-followed with Iqaluit Red Army drawing huge attendance figures.

Gregoryisgodistan Grid Slaves
Style modifier = -5

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Choose scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only one per match
Godmod scoring events: Yes
Godmod injuries: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes, go crazy, just don't kill Lord Almighty Gregory. Trying to kill him is fine, as is staging a fake assassination using actors/other creative means. And if you do anything too weird, Telegram me to give me a heads up, but you don't need to ask permission.
Note: Whatever you do, expect reciprocation. If you injure my players, I have permission to injure yours. If you godmod, I have permission to godmod. I will not try to figure out whether we are both violating each other's RP permissions or neither one is and will assume you made an excpetion if necessary.
Style Modifier: -5

Most Gregoryisgodistanis (that is the demonym) do not have real names, only titles and government IDs. For instance, our starting quarterback is Zookeeper ZNZ949AHX. This means his job is Zookeeper and his government ID is ZNZ949AHX. Government IDs do not change throughout one's life, but titles may. For instance, our quarterback was formerly known as Youth ZNZ949AHX until he turned 18, then Lion Tamer ZNZ949AHX while he worked as a Lion Tamer, before becoming a Zookeeper and acquiring his current title. He should be referred to by his full name at all times, never ZNZ949AHX. A few high-ranking government elites have personal names.

Gregoryisgodistan normally goes with 2 wide receivers, 1 tight end, a halfback, and a fullback on offense, but may use other sets, such as 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB, etc.

On defense, our base is a 4-3-4 (4 linemen, 3 linebackers, 4 backs) but we also use a 4-2-5 nickel from time to time, and occasionally, a 3-2-6 dime. We NEVER play prevent defense.)

Additionally, since our success rate on two-point conversions is roughly 53%, meaning the expected value from going for 2 is higher than the expected value from an extra point, we almost always go for two points after a touchdown, unless we're either winning in a blowout (to avoid appearing unsportsmanlike) or if one point is equally as good as two (such as if we've just scored a touchdown to tie the game, in which case usually we'll kick the extra point for the lead unless it's early in the game.)

Our defense is very strong, but our offense is mediocre at best. Most of our scores are either directly scored by the defense or scored by the defense setting up the offense with good field position. We also frequently will use Defected Chicago Bear Brian Urlacher (more on him later) as a blitzing linebacker, meaning we're sending five men.

Note: our head coach calls all plays, unlike most teams.

What is an Enemy Crusher? And why are they all so fat?
Enemy Crushers work for the government to crush people as an "enhanced interrogation" technique to get them to confess. Many of them die if they don't confess in time. They are fat in order to successfully inflict pain upon the torturee. That's why most die. The Enemy Crushers also crushed to death multiple referees, plus several players, coaches, and fans of the the opposing teams since Gregoryisgodistan's debut. You have been warned. Also, Enemy Crusher Piotr von Porker is the brother of the late Samuel "Porky" von Porker who was executed in Free Republics for crushing someone to death during World Bowl XXII He will likely look for revenge if Gregoryisgodistan winds up playing the Republicans again. Furthermore, the enemy crushers have gained a lot of weight since the last World Bowl and will be doing even more crushing.

Is Enemy Crusher Carl Paladino related to the politician from New York?
No, and he will crush to death anyone who asks him that. So don't try, unless you want to be crushed to death.

Did Darrelle Revis and Brian Urlacher really defect to Gregoryisgodistan?
No, but the government claims to have kidnapped them. Following the Baptism of Iron, in which "Uralcher" was named MVP of the final, the two "kidnapped NFL players" claimed they liked Gregoryisgodistan so much that they wanted to live here forever, even though Lord Almighty Gregory offered them the opportunity to leave. But in reality, they are just random Gregoryisgodistanis who are good at football who were instructed to pretend to be Urlacher and Revis. Keep in mind that everyone in the country believes the official government story because they are so propagandized, even though "Urlacher" and "Revis" look nothing like their real counterparts.

"Liked Gregoryisgodistan so much and decided to stay here forever" sounds an awful lot like Stockholm Syndrome, considering they were allegedly kidnapped, right?
It is often debated among Gregoryisgodistanis whether it is Stockholm Syndrome or true love of the country, and in fact both players mentioned Stockholm Syndrome then specifically denied it. A recent survey showed that 76% of Gregoryisgodistanis believe the two genuinely love this country, 24% believe it is Stockholm Syndrome, and 0% believe the "absurd foreign propaganda" that the players are not really who they supposedly are.

You do realize Darrelle Revis doesn't play for the Jets, anymore, right?
Exactly, and the official government story is that he no longer plays for the Jets because he was kidnapped and later defected. In reality, he was traded to the Buccaneers and eventually wound up with the Patriots.

And Urlacher's retired, you know?
Yes, but the official story is we kidnapped him and he defected permanently.

How should I refer to these two in my RP's?
By their official names, but feel free to use irony quotes to imply doubt as to the name's veracity.

What's a pervert chaser? Sounds creepy.
It really isn't. They chase down people who commit sex crimes like mooing, rape, molestation, or indecent exposure, then cut their privates off with a butcher's knife. Without any anesthetic or Novocaine. Don't be a pervert in Gregoryisgodistan. Or a Pervert Chaser will catch you.

Are all the von Streudels related?
Yes, they are brothers.

What is a Grammar Enforcement Officer?
A Grammar Enforcement Officer is a law enforcement officer in Gregoryisgodistan who is responsible for enforcing the use of proper grammar. Using improper grammar is punishable by 28 days in a grammar reeducation camp under Gregoryisgodistani law. The Grammar Enforcement Officers enforce this law. There are also Spelling Enforcement Officers, Mathematics Enforcement Officers, and Speaking Enforcement Officers, and respective reeducation camps.

The Grid Corps is a very aggressive team. Their defense is known for calling blitzes often, at least once per series. They use the 4-3-4 defense most often, but will sometimes opt for a 3-4-4 in risky situations, and on brief occasions, a 3-3-5.

On Offense, plays are called by the Quarterback for most of the game, unless the Head Coach requests the Offensive Coordinator to take over. For the most part, the Grid Corps opts for 2 WR, 2RB, and a TE. The Passing game is decent, but considering Drawkland's avid running culture, the Running game is top-notch. They usually use both at whatever discretion.

The Special Teams is only okay. Kicking isn't held to as high a standard as other skills in Drawkland, so it's a sort of weak spot for the Corps. Accuracy is quite good, making field goals a usual gimme, but power is rather lacking, meaning kickoffs and punts don't travel as far. It's uncommon, but the Grid Corps has been known to use fake punts in the past, due to a multi-talented Punter (Jason McFarland) who is decent at passing and a quick runner.

Kicks returned usually by #89 WR Daniel Madison.

This is the Grid Corps' international debut. It's a conglomerate of both All-Pro teams from the Focal and the Prime leagues of the FLD. Essentially, it's the best of the best of Drawkland. The Council of Athletes determines the best of each position and recruit them from each team. Teams which were in the Round of 16 in the FLD Playoffs that year can submit 2 players, other teams only submit 1.

As it can be determined from the roster, most Drawkian players are about a foot taller and a couple dozen pounds heavier than the average players of other teams. This is due to the evolution of the species, in the ancient times, required to grow taller to seek potential threats and to have longer legs to run faster. So, the team isn't made of 7 foot freaks, that's just how the average Drawkian looks.

The Leviathans of Schottia

G.F.C
World Bowl XXVIII

Team Info
Schottia have made remarkably rapid progress through the World Bowl rankings for a nation, which until two years ago had no professional clubs. Much credit must go to one man, Lewis Patterson, who has been the biggest champion of Gridiron Football in Schottia over the last decade. Four years ago, he began to scrape together a semblance of a team with which to compete in the Baptism of Iron in Gregoryisgodistan, where the Schottians finished third. It almost ended after that, with many of they players utterly demoralised by the horrors they witnessed in the Espotivan nation. In spite of this Patterson rallied the troops and took them on to the finals in The Equestrian States, where the side won five of their twelve matches, doing well without ruffling any feathers.

Next year took Schottia to Electrum, where despite few people back home expecting them to produce very much, they made it to the round of sixteen at the expense of the Fair Republic. This was the catalyst for change within the sport in Schottia and the government invested time and money in subsidising a small professional league, where young players could begin to be brought through.

Schottia followed on from their success in Electrum, by reaching the last sixteen once again the following year in Cosumar. This time, Lewis Patterson moved up from quarterback to coach, and the side won all of their group matches, including two wins over Taeshan. The impact they made last time round, and the subsequent rise up the world rankings has meant that here in Quebec will be the first time the side have had any real expectations on their shoulders, and it will be interesting to see how they handle that.

Schottia are bizarrely the top seeded side in their group, but they will by no means have it their own way. San Jose Guayabal will be capable of doing a lot of damage, and as second seeds, can't be taken lightly. Most crucially however, is the return of the Fleftic side following the Air Abanhfleft disaster in Electrum, which left 25 members of the team dead. We will see one of the sport's best up and coming teams re-enter the fold, having understandably decided to sit things out in Cosumar. Abanhfleft's rank as suffered accordingly and they are very tricky third seeds in this group.

Playing Style
Schottia have a hard attacking attitude to Gridiron, and that is largely the philosophy of most teams on the islands. Perhaps born from a lack of sophistication, and little experience in the sport at a professional level, it has meant the game has evolved down those lines.

Top players in the current squad include: Rupert Kenny and Nathan Johnson, both of whom currently play in the AGL, with Draakurr Mariners, and Ardryk Crimson Tide respectively. In terms of SGL talent, North Coast Sirens' Quarterback Gabriella Alessi made a big impact last time round, as did promising youngsters David Cowden and James Clee. One exciting addition for this year's tournament is 19-year-old Jack Stewart, who has been making waves at Port Patrick and Granton.

Dunpana Journal

Sarva: Hello, and welcome to the latest issue of the Dunpana Journal. The Dunpa Hawks, Dunpa's World Bowl team, has been placed in Group C with
Firebolt, Nassau-Hessen, Renetopia, Pittastria, San Llera, and Atlanta-Breyer. Steve, how do you think the Hawks will play out in this tourney?

Steve C.: I don't think the Dunpa Hawks will make it very far in this tourney. The team is mostly composed of rookies who have only placed college football. I think they probably might make it past Group C, but not far after that. We'll just have to wait and see if my prediction is right.

Sarva: I was thinking the exact same thing! Anyway, that covers the latest issue of the Dunpana Journal. I'm Sarva and I'm Steve and we'll see you in the next issue of the Dunpana Journal!
If you hate to get 3 wishes, but love to imagine, this is the place for you

Phoenix among favourites in Group D

With the groups for World Bowl XXVIII being released last night, we'll take you through a team-by-team analysis, and predictions where teams will finish.

Gregoryisgodistan

Ah, the Grid Slaves. The third-ranked team in the world, this team will pose the greatest challenge to Kaboomlandia this World Bowl. The Grid Slaves' linemen are expected to be a challenge, as they are, as is normal for Enemy Crushers, enormous. Grammar Enforcement Officer SLS399SSH is a very capable quarterback as well. The Phoenix, who are strong on the run, will need to emphasize the pass when they play the Grid Slaves.

Prediction: 14-10 Grid Slaves. GGS finish 1st.

Oisinistan

Oisinistan is fairly unknown to the Phoenix, as the Oisinistani have never participated in a World Bowl before. This game is predicted to be an easy victory for the Phoenix.

Prediction: 37-7 Phoenix. OIS finish 5th.

Frenline Delpha

The Anacondas should be an interesting matchup for the Kaboomlandians, but the Anacondas also bowed out of World Bowl XXVII meekly, finishing last in Group D with a 1-9 record. The 66th-ranked Frenline Delphans will put up a good fight, but ultimately the Phoenix should triumph.

Prediction: 18-0 Phoenix. FND finish 3rd.

Banija

Banija is low-ranked at 97th in the world. The Banijans are not expected to pose a significant threat to knock the Phoenix or the Grid Slaves out.

Prediction: 41-10 Phoenix. BNJ finish 6th.

Rennidan

This one is an interesting case. Rennidan is a former World Bowl participant, but have not participated since World Bowl 19. The talent is still there, but the Phoenix have the higher skill and the momentum.

Prediction: 25-8 Phoenix. RND finish 4th.

Ruairikstan

Despite pulling off two infuriating upsets over the Kaboomlandians in the International Baseball Slam, there isn't really much to say here. The Phoenix should win easily.

Prediction: 40-12 Phoenix. RRK finish 7th.

“You don’t understand. Things have... well, they’ve changed in the last ten years. What you’re proposing is unsafe, unsporting and completely unreasonable.”

The sting of varnish still clings to my nose. The desk the small administrator hides behind is the type we break for firewood back home. Things have certainly changed in the last ten years, more so for me and mine than anyone else.

“I am on your side here, really. We’ve already accepted your application, you will play in the World Bowl.”

Rats like the man before me are the reason I no longer live on an island called The Land of Free People. Rats like him are the reason I now fight to survive on the daily.

“We can provide you the protective gear, if money is an issue.”
“We will play our way.”
“You will die if you play your way.”
“Only if it is necessary.”
“Now see here-“

My hand sends splinters flying from the wooden barrier between us. The familiar burn stirs, the calming fire within. A squeaking exhale leaves the rat.

“We play our way.”

I leave without further exchange. As I round the corner I hear the rat dial a call.

“I guess the bastards are back.”
__________

The Bastards of Rennidan
WBII Champions

STYLE

You walk into any gridiron bar, anywhere in the Multiverse, and there will always be one old timer with a story to tell about watching Rennidan play back in the day.
The team known as the Brutes were synonymous with true smash mouth football, and for good reason.
They played a hard running/short pass game, with big emphasis on heavy hits.

And they did it all without wearing any pads.

Whilst the land the Bastards hail from has changed drastically in the last ten years, their style of play is no different. They are ready and willing to bleed for every yard they gain.
Expect to see their players hitting the field in an array of civilian gear, and hitting their opponents just as hard as any of the big boys in the competition.

THE TEAM

Unconventional is the word of the day. Rennidan play a hard nosed 11 people only no-substitute policy. The following 11 are the offence, defence, special teams, coaches, coordinators and owners of the Bastards. Outside the game they live their own lives in the Lawless Lands, providing for the communes they belong to.

Der Sturgeon - CB/WR - 22y.o, 6'6" - Electrician
Klut Foe - CB/WR - 21y.o, 6'7" - Fisherman
Kyo Tremain - DE/OT - 27y.o, 6'9" - Doctor
Holt Grimsby - DE/OT - 21y.o, 6'10" - Mechanic
Tayt Selso - DT/OG - 24y.o, 6'10" - Monk
Yute Blakhale - DT/OG - 28y.o, 6'5" - Monk
Eyan "Surge" Remcae-Powis - MLB/QB/K/P - 24y.o, 6'3" - Farmer|CAPTAIN
Demarc Deluge - OLB/TE - 22y.o, 6'4" - Smith
Saighto "Silky" Avi - OLB/HB - 18y.o, 6'1" - Herdsman
Sjolt Lakenheath - S/FB - 25y.o, 6'0" - Fisherman
Strom Vebuch - S/C - 25y.o, 7'1" - Guardsman

If a player is injured in the course of play, they will continue. If the referees or other team object to the continuation, more blood shall spill.

Silky and Foe are the players to watch for scoring highlights on offence (although Surge does make some nasty looking sneaks for points now and then).
Surge, Grimsby and Blakhale are the ones to watch on defence.

Federation of Allamunnic States
National Gridiron Football Team - The Regulars

Roleplay Information

Style Modifier: -2

Going for Two: Logical

Roleplay Permissions
- Choose Scorers: Please TG first.
- Injure Players: Nothing beyond game-ending without TGing for approval.
- Penalize Players: Keep it reasonable, or TG for approval. The Regulars tend to be fairly well-disciplined.
- Godmod Injuries: Same as regular injuries. Please keep it reasonable or make it hilarious.
- Godmod Other Events: Keep previous permissions in mind. Have fun with it.
- Photographs: Please do not use photographs with any players intended to depict players on my team.
- Additional Notes:
- Offense is mostly run-first. Offensive line is probably the single most-important unit for the offense's success.
- Defense is stout. Strongest part is the front-seven; count on a lot of pressure on QBs and attention toward stopping the run.
- Special teams have traditionally been a relative weakness.
- Team plays very physically.

General Information

Overview:

The Regulars finished World Bowl XXVII by winning an unprecedented sixth championship, solidifying their credentials further as the most successful international gridiron football program. The approach that has produced most of those championships, a formula emphasizing a stifling defense and an effective power rushing game, remains essentially unchanged.

With its leading coaches, including its head coach and both primary unit coordinators having backgrounds on one line or another (both as players and coaches), it is perhaps unsurprising that the Regulars, players and coaches alike, tend to believe that games and championships are won in the trenches. Given their track record (three championships in five campaigns under Head Coach Baeryk Vaalburger), nobody is likely to argue that point with them. The offensive line is trusted to power the rushing attack while giving breathing room to the passing game, while the defensive line is relied on to enable the linebackers and place pressure on opposing offenses to shut down the run and pass alike.

The Allamunnic National Gridiron Squad at this point has no trouble recruiting, in spite of the longstanding policy that requires players on the team to renounce all domestic league commitments during their tenure. Once limited to AGL rejects and washed-up veterans for players (with rare exceptions), the Regulars now boast a roster as talented as any Allamunnic Gridiron League squad.

This is a program that is quite well-staffed and funded, being a point of pride for a country that is somewhat gridiron-crazy. It employs 55 players and a large staff that includes coaches, trainers, managers, and team medical professionals, and its success has brought them to a point wherein a year that does not feature at least a semifinal appearance has come to be considered a failure.

Team Captains (Coin-Toss Purposes):
Offense: Torren Tormundsunn (FB)

Special Teams: Wyatt Skode (P)

Staff

General & Front Office
Commissioner: Hadley Thornburger (Age: 72) - The long-time Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner is still, strictly-speaking, at the head of the national team's power structure, just as he is with every other Allamunnic national sporting team. However, because of the team's long-term success since Ryan Smart took over and since, Thornburger has largely taken a hands-off role for gridiron, only stepping in in a handful of crises.

Team President: Benjamin Jamesunn (Age: 66)
General Manager: Erik Warnur (Age: 49)
Director of Player Personnel: Anna Torrensunn (Age: 41)
Team Doctors: Graagur Maarkussunn (Age: 61)(Head); Rynna Eriksunn (Age: 54)
Athletic Trainers: Maarda Lindersunn (Age: 44)(Head); Bryndyn Nyurdlunn (Age: 43); Torren Udunsunn (Age: 39); Kaarl Mendelsunn (Age: 40); Olaf Knutsunn (Age: 38); Inna Wyllur (Age: 37); Lyna Henriksunn (Age: 32); Shae Eriklunn (Age: 28)

Coaching
Head Coach: Baeryk Vaalburger (Age: 53) – The successor to three-time champion Ryan Smart, and the team's former offensive coordinator, can now also boast three championships of his own after defeating Saintland at World Bowl XXIII, Equestrian States at World Bowl XXV, and Ko-oren at World Bowl XXVII. Vaalburger has kept the Regulars true to their smashmouth and defense-first roots, bringing in enough talent and coaching them well enough to help solidify the Allamunnic national program's place as the most successful in the world.

General
Assistant Head Coach: Rikard Olafsunn (Age: 48)
Strength & Conditioning: Harald Vynnsunn (Age: 42)
Strength & Conditioning Assistant: Junna Riktur (Age: 38)

Offense
Coordinator: Hanrik Wurfytur (Age: 42) - As has often been the case, because the Allamunnic offense flows through the offensive line, the offensive line position coach has been promoted to take over as offensive coordinator. Wurfytur will, at least for World Bowl XXV, serve as mostly a personnel coordinator and package designer, where play-calling duties will remain with head coach Baeryk Vaalburger. However, the hope may well be to eventually hand over play-calling duties to Wurfytur.

Quarterbacks Coach: Maarkus Daalhulm (Age: 45)
Running Backs Coach: Haanryk Stahlburg (Age: 44)
Wide Receivers Coach: Mikel Dunn (Age: 46)
Tight-Ends Coach: Zak Hall (Age: 37)
Offensive Line Coach: Vaalhulm Rikken (Age: 36)

Defense
Coordinator: Theodur Laansur (Age: 44) – Although he still works a lot with the team’s defensive line, Theodur Laansur has been promoted to defensive coordinator following the departure of Elias Mourner to lead the Innusburg Huskies, an AGL expansion franchise.

Defensive Line Coach: Archie Wagner (Age: 41)
Linebackers Coach: Miles Ryan (Age: 43)
Linebackers Assistant Coach: Jason Ridley (Age: 43)
Defensive Backs Coach: Andrik Ierunmungur (Age: 43)
Defensive Backs Assistant Coach: Leif Coelmunn (Age: 36)

Special
Coordinator: Daanyl Mueller (Age: 65) – The Regulars' long-time kicking coach takes over as special teams coordinator following the departure of Haargild Baannun to the AGL for a head-coaching job. Mueller has proven amusingly anti-careerist, only taking the promotion to coordinator at Vaalburger's insistence.

Kicking Coach: Phillipa Demirici (Age: 51)
Return Coach: Gretchen Vaalhulmsunn (Age: 38)

Cosumar National Football Team - World Bowl XXVIII

Basic Information

Nation: The Fiefdom of Cosumar

Demonym: Cosumarite

Nickname: Dragons

Debut: Baptism of Iron VI (3rd place), World Bowl XI

Ranking: 5

Style Modifier: Moderately Offensive (+2)

Football in Cosumar:
Football, as it is known here, is the second most popular spectator sport behind only soccer. The Cosumar Football League (CFL) commands a strong Fiefdom-wide following. The most recent season's results can be found here. Cosumar's World Bowl team is a collection of All-Stars from the CFL. Cosumar also boasts two of the most prominent college football programs in the world: Ramusok Capital University (RCU) and Stoneshore College. RCU and Stoneshore have won the last two NationStates College Football (NSCF) championships. As such, many of Cosumar's World Bowl players had experience in NSCF with either RCU or Stoneshore College prior to their CFL careers. For example, Ramusok Capital University's star NSCF-winning running back Avery Broddick was drafted into the CFL by theJadde Bruins and has become a star there, landing him on the National Team for this World Bowl. As previously mentioned, football is immensely popular in the Fiefdom at collegiate, professional, AND international levels. Many fans stubbornly take offense to use of terms other than "football" when describing the sport.

"We're going to 'TRK Quebec'. You remember them?" Zack Murbag remembered the country well, but felt the need to reiterate the importance to his team. It had been a long time since this group of men had stood together in the same room, and even longer since it had happened for something other than war. The heads in the room turned towards each other quizzically. The name freed up a gear or two in them, but the rest of the mind machinery was still blocked. Murbag continued.

"You remember pre-war, the Global American Football Association?" A few ears perked up, but the rest of the room remained motionless.

"Jesus Christ, guys, was it the war that turned your brains into mush or the concussions from playing football? You don't remember? You're telling me you were the greatest football team on the planet for two years straight and you can't remember? Come on, man! 11-0! You hear me? 11-0 two regular seasons in a row! We were unstoppable! We had every team in that damned league licking our boots for a shot at success!" The anger in his voice was almost tangible as Murbag exploded. How in the world was he going to lead this team on the field after so long? One man standing near the back raised his hand.

"Uh, Coach, I for one remember. These bastards tried to kill Jangles." Roberto vas Deferens, legendary kicker, spoke up. He was referring, of course, to two-time MVP for the Mighty Kittens, quarterback Jimbo Jangles. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec hatched a plot to murder him on-field during the playoffs of their second season. They appeared to be successful, and the Kitties lost the very next game. Their first loss in over twenty games. It rocked the team to their core and just like that - their seemingly endless streak of success was over and they never made the playoffs again. Then, the war came...and it was all over.

"You're goddamn right they did! And now they're hosting the World Bowl. How does that make you feel? These guys got away with a huge one and the rest of the world overlooks it, like it was never a problem. Now we're gonna have to take the fight to them. Are you up for the challenge? If you're not ready, SAY SOMETHING NOW, I'll take your jersey and you can walk home and watch this thing on TV. Any takers? Huh? ANY of you?" The players looked at their feet. It felt like they had let their coach down without even taking the field for one game.

"Well, what are we gonna do, Coach? We don't have a quarterback except for Ralph's janky arm and Jangles never made it out of surgery." Free Safety Twister Loins made a good point. The Mighty Kittens still didn't have a quarterback. Without saying anything, Murbag picked up the red communications phone in the locker room and held it to his ear. None of the players could head who answered the other end, but they heard Coach clearly.

"Hey Ted, listen to me and listen to me closely. Activate Lazarus. Yes, that's right. Thanks, Ted. Bye."

PACIFICA SPORTS PRESENTS: THE SELECTION
Image
They might be rivals in the league and in college but it's time for players across Armeia and the Keystone Islands to come together as one to show the rest of the world what we can do on the international stage.
This is the team announcement, a joint effort by the Armeia and Keystone Islands federations.
Home Uniform: http://i.imgur.com/9c7AG5m.jpg
Away Uniform: TBA

STAFF:
HEAD COACH: Takumi Maki - The head coach of Armeian Gridiron League team Forge Thunderbolts, 43 year old Takumi Maki has been around the league since it started up, and this is his first season as an international coach. He previously coached Loftus College to a championship on the college level, and now he takes his knowledge of strategies and the up tempo offense to the national level. A former quarterback coach, he should be able to help the young QBs on this team perform well.

ASSISTANT COACH/OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Kyo Kobayashi - Kyo Kobayashi is the head coach of Jerawen State, and Maki's former protege. 28 years old, he was the offensive coordinator responsible for the gunslinging attack that Loftus College wielded during their championship season. He was originally a WRs coach and analysts say that one of the reasons he was selected is because of how he can help the wide receivers reach their potential. Also a good recruiter, as shown in the talent he has on his college squad.

DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR: Haru Ito - The defensive coordinator of highly ranked college team Illara West. Known for aggressive defenses that leave corners on an island so to speak, it's a bit of a strange selection to see him here. But he does bring a style of defense that many teams can't learn to deal with, and only time will tell how he fares.

QUARTERBACKS COACH: Mia Perrera - One of the AGL's better female QBs. She's actually an active player but she's 39 and nearing retirement. Going to go straight into coaching after hanging up her cleats, probably with her AGL team, the Southeast Terrum Surge. She's mainly here to help the younger quarterbacks, as there are no QBs on the roster over 26 years of age.

STARTING ELEVEN: OFFENSE
Image

QUARTERBACK: With Cara Devlin currently serving in the military, Paulo Alecjo and Kyle Raj are the favorites to start. Alecjo is listed as the official starter, while Raj will remain the second quarterback on the depth chart but has a good chance to start if he older QB messes up.

CENTER: Karl Akerman, Illara West senior and first round draft prospect. He is undersized for a center and has short arms, but he makes up for it by playing with heart and commanding the O-Line like an expert. He plans on entering the AGL draft after the season instead of waiting a year to be able to be signed directly to a team.

LEFT GUARD: Ted Randal, a far more physically imposing player than Akerman. Weighs 318 pounds and plays for the Scarborough Warriors, the team owned by RC Atlas.

RIGHT GUARD: Jayden Gibson, thought to be Alecjo's favorite lineman at Forge. 279 pounds, he's also pretty physically imposing and is a classic run blocking right guard. Went to college at the University of Forge and now plays for their AGL team, he's a fan favorite for fans from there.

LEFT TACKLE: Wessel Baasch, slightly undersized at 300 pounds, he's a speed over strength guy. Played for Jerawen State and is waiting a year to be eligible to sign for an AGL team after skipping the draft, would have went top three if he entered.

RIGHT TACKLE: Johan Baasch, the younger brother of Wessel Baasch. He plays for Illara West and is a sophomore, and he's larger than his brother at 310 pounds.
Image
RUNNING BACK: Storm Staford, a top running back in the league who plays for Scarborough. Physically imposing at 6'3 and 217, and still at the young age of 23, Staford is one of the AGL's fastest rising stars. A Scarborough State alum, he plays a quick and skillful style that utilizes stiff arms, spins, and trucks to get out of tackles, and he's a good receiver out of the backfield.

X: Bojan Atlewood, a playmaker who can shake a corner with good off ball movements and then make a big catch. Has big play power but is inconsistent and can sometimes disappear for a whole game. He's the highest paid player in the AGL, and he plays for Barrier City GFC. Friends with Ito, one of the reasons he was selected as the 'X' receiver. However he's a pretty big personality that needs to be managed at all times.

Y: Tyree Lanesson, the shortest player at the team at 5'4. He runs with speed and uses his small size to avoid tackle and catch low to the ground balls.

TIGHT END: Ray Ishikawa, someone who focuses more on blocking than catching. 245 pounds, he assists the tackles with run blocking and sometimes catches balls in the flat on third and short.

Z: The Z receiver is Zero Davidovic, who also plays safety and occasionally cornerback. He's one of the hardest workers on the team, and his main strength is with long balls. Deadly if you let him run in the open field, he has real highlight potential. 26 years old, he plays for the Southeast Terrum Surge.

Note: Despite Z and Y being listed the way they are, any of the four DBs are able to play receiver and often times receive starts over the listed Z and Ys

STARTING ELEVEN: DEFENSE

CB #1: Trista Prust, who's occasionally a safety, occasionally a receiver, and one of the greatest players to play for Illara West. Super fast and a good leaper too, would be the most dangerous player on the defense if she had good hands. 22, she still hasn't reached her prime. However she has a unique injury problem related to anemia...

CB #2: Ty Leroux, yes you heard that right, Leroux. Grandson of the former Southern Armeia coach, Ty Leroux currently plays for Illara West and was the highest recruited player in the nation coming out of high school.

STRONG SAFETY: Taesha Kendrick, the star of the Forge secondary. Hardest hitter on the team and has better hands than Prust, always a threat to make an interception.

FREE SAFETY: The second in the female safety pairing is the youngest one on the team. Kris Berksson is only seventeen and hasn't even signed to a college yet but Maki took a risk calling her up after the first two choices were injured. Expected to maybe lose starts to her backup. Did well last World Bowl but will be tested more in this one.

STRONG SAFETY: Sanja Prust, cornerback for Bastille Tech who played all the skill positions in high school. Four years younger than her older sister, but more athletic and physical.

DEFENSIVE END: Torrace Allen, Indies University pass rusher. Undersized but makes up for it in aggression and effort, as well as technique. One of the top blue chip recruits last season.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: Matt Tobiasson, the 32 year old who is a perennial starter for the Songhaven Larks. Might not be as strong as he used to be but he retains good technique and speed.

DEFENSIVE END: Barrier City defensive end Ziare Ali, born in the Keystone Islands and former Indies U player. Top prospect physically, probably the best player physically on the team other than Storm Staford.

LINEBACKER: Rory Besic, from the Terrum Surge. Another athletic and skilled player that's smaller than a lot of guys at his position. Played four years at Bastille Tech and won DPOY for the Interior Conference twice.

LINEBACKER: Alek Kendrick, out of Southeast Terrum High. Not committed to a college yet but likely to attend Bastille Tech or Loftus College. Extremely quick, a hard hitter also.

Side RP based on a plane crash I RP'd a couple months ago.

Ripped from the Sky
Part 1

November 2, 2015
Ralia ATC

Jim Park was working at the Ralia Air Traffic Control Centre, monitoring all civilian air travel entering and exiting Kaboomlandia. He turned one lazy eye to the screen - the night shift meant there wasn't too much traffic. Suddenly, an aircraft disappeared off the radar screen. Park shot bolt upright and grabbed the telephone to his supervisor. "I need you to come here. Kaboomlandia Air Flight 184 just disappeared off my radar screen." The supervisor raced into the room. "We received a distress call from that same aircraft. It appears to have broken up in midflight." Park was incredulous. "How could it have done that? Call the KTSB."

Three weeks later
Somewhere in the Indian Ocean

Ray Smith stood on the deck of the boat as the search ship patrolled the waters of Kaboomlandia Flight 184's last known location. Ray turned to his junior partner, Matt Walter. "No debris yet. We'll let you know when we have something."
"Damn," Matt said. He pulled a bottle out of his coat and drank it down.
"Try to avoid that, Matt," reminded Smith. "We've got a big job ahead of us."

It was a strange thing to be living in a dream such as this one. Lewis Patterson could remember travelling to The Babbage Islands as a 20-year-old, managing to get a ticket for the final where he saw Cassadaigua triumph at the Capital Stadium. Back then Quarterback Lauren Hamilton had been like a fictional hero to him, she existed on an entirely different level. He had dragged his girlfriend at the time along with him; few of his close friends knew what Gridiron was, let alone had they shown a shred of interest in the sport. Even as he thought back on it now, the entire stadium, the crowd, his girlfriend, all the memories were in that grainy underdeveloped pre-digital photography style. They were the same quality as the picture he had had a fellow spectator take of the two of them stood outside the stadium in Charleston, with his mum's battered old camera. He remembered that moment far better than he remembered his partner, even though he had looked at the photograph one thousand times or more over the last twenty years.

From that year onwards, after watching the victorious team lifting the trophy on that beautiful day in Charleston, Patterson felt that one day it would be his turn. At that moment in time he didn't know how, he didn't have faintest idea how, but he was going to do it. Schottia had no national Girdiron team, no professional league, no amateur league, and to Paterson's knowledge, no organised side of any sort. He was starting from scratch, but didn't everyone have start somewhere?

Eighteen-year-ago. The Grass-quadrangle behind The University of Handon Student Union.

'So is it pretty much just like rugby?' Asked Jessica McKay, as she stood inspecting the ball, like it was something which had been beamed down from an alien spacecraft.

'No... Eh not really.' Patterson replied unsure if he had even given the right answer. 'But if you think about rugby, certainly the set-plays, they you are thinking in the right direction.'

'Okay, so like rugby, but not like rugby.' Jessica McKay held the ball under her arm and gritted her teeth like she meant business. 'I got it!'

Paterson grinned nervously. 'Good, Great!' He looked around, realising that he was already starting to lose some of the group. They had begun talking amongst themselves, discussing coursework, relationships, and the type of football they all knew better. 'Let's try a couple of plays then.' He said in a loud voice. 'Robbie, you're probably in about the right position where you are. So I'll be the quarterback and lets imagine I've just been handed the ball. Alan, you stand next to Robbie and try to...'

'Wait-wait-wait-' Robbie Calder cut across him. 'I'm not sure I understand the rules. How many players are there on each side again?'

This was the fourth time Patterson had been through the rules from scratch, and he wasn't in the mood to start again. 'At least eleven.' He answered looking worn down. 'But most good sides have separate teams for Defence and Offence, and special kickers too.'

'But we've only got eight people!' Exclaimed Jessica, looking bewildered. She spun round in a circle doing a head count, while a frustrated Patterson removed the ball from under her arm.

'I KNOW... sorry... I mean, I know.' He was taking deep breaths to stay calm. 'Have you never heard of five-a-side, or just having a kick-about? Can we not just throw a couple of balls and see how things go? Guys please! Can we just give this a shot?'

'A couple of balls?' Blurted Alan Robinson. 'How many do you play with in this sport? I thought it was only just one?'

'IT IS JUST ONE!' Patterson threw the ball at the ground and clapped his hands to his head. 'OH MY GOD, WHY IS THIS SO HARD!' And this could have been it, right there, right then. Not only had be failed to rouse any excitement, he had also failed to even throw one stinking football. This was no indictment against his enthusiasm, far from it, but the last thirty minutes had told him quite emphatically that no one gave a flying toss. The worst part was that Patterson was actually starting to feel stupid. It had taken more than anyone there could have ever realised, to first pluck up the courage, and second to arrange for all these young people to take time out of their days. He had pulled them all out here and they were just ridiculing him - no worse - they just couldn't even be bothered to pay a blind bit of attention.

This would have been it - this would have been it indeed, had it not been for a timely intervention from someone who was going to become very important in the events that followed.

'I understand.' Said little Frank Lemis. 'It makes sense to me.' Everyone looked round at the lanky first-year student, and it stopped the group griping amongst themselves. 'Lets give it a go while we are all here anyway.'

So largely due to Lemis' intervention they continued to play for the next hour or so, in what could be seen as the earliest incarnation of the Schottic side that travelled to Quebec today. And even now, as Paterson sat next to Frank Lemis as their flight departed Handon Airport for Atlantian Oceania, he had never forgotten the way the man had helped him out back then. Lemis had hung up his boots at the end of the World Bowl XXVII, but he was still an important part of the set-up. He coached The Lammerton Hawks back in Schottia, and he was a Mentor in this current National side. Everything has to start somewhere.

Banija prepare for extremely tough World Bowl

HERZEGOVINA CITY- After a dispute between the Royal Banijan Olympic Committee, which is responsible for organizing events as these, and the Banijan Football League, there was not an agreement reached where Banija could use its professional athletes for this tournament. There was a war of words between the directors of both organizations, and there was a lot of bad blood left on the table. However, in an agreement where the Minister of Sports & Culture was involved, it was agreed to allow the NSCF 12 Northern Moravica squad to have one final swan song, an attempt to bring more glory to the school, and the country, by competing on Banija's behalf in the 28th World Bowl.

With the size of the tournament, this is going to be one of the toughest World Bowls in recent memory. There are 56 nations in the tournament, but in a controversial decision by the organizers of the tournament, only 16 teams will advance to the knockout stages of the tournament. Of course, each team is guaranteed a record 6 games at this tournament with the size of the groups, but only the top two out of each 7 team group will advance. And that means in Group D, such as with every group, each game will be hard fought, each game will be tough, and each and every game will be bitterly contested by every team involved. With such a high standard of success each team needs to meet, we will expect hard-fought battles in every phase of every game.

Banija will look to build upon the successes of its current premier college football team, Northern Moravica. They stormed onto the scene as newcomers in NSCF 12, winning 8 out of their first 9 games to win the Celestia Conference outright with a game to spare. After they won the conference championship however, things began to spiral out of control for this team. Kovach got hurt in their final conference game against Army, and their offense struggled mightily after their quarterback went down. Even though defense is the strength of the unit, nobody stepped up to the plate as team leader, and it took a toll on the team. Even though they started the season 8-1, they lost their last 5 games of the season, including all 3 non-conference games and the first quarterfinal.

Even though they struggled through the end of the season, they won the hearts of a lot of Banijans during their regular season run. They showed Banijans that they could compete on the international stage, and after professionals were not released by the BFL for this tournament, it was only natural that they would get the nod to compete for the Banijans. And they come with the swagger of college kids, and confidence from their season that they can take on the world. After breaking his leg in Week 10 of NSCF 12, Kovach is healed and will be ready to go for this tournament.

Even though the obvious favorites to escape from this group will be Gregoryisgodistan and Kaboomlandia, as the #3 and #12 ranked teams in all of football, Banija will look to be the cinderella story of Group D. Of course, the schedule favors their bid to be upstarts and knock off one of the higher ranked teams. Banija will play the three unranked newcomers first in the tournament, all games that Banija has a great chance of winning. Of course, to advance, winning all three of those games will likely be necessary to keep pace with nations like Kaboomlandia and Gregoryisgodistan.

Hopefully, some victories early in this tournament will give the Banijans confidence to go out and beat teams that, going into the tournament, are predicted to beat Banija pretty handily. They will face Frenline Delpha, then get a bye, then play Kaboomlandia, who is a familiar opponent in other sports like rugby, and then in the final game, will play the group's best team, and one of the favorites to win the entire tournament, in the last game of the group stage. It will be an uphill battle, but if Banija gets hot early in the tournament, and confident, there is no telling what momentum they can bring against opponents that, regularly, shouldn't have a problem beating these college kids from Herzegovina City.

Banija's first game, of course, will be against unranked Rennidan. Banija is ranked 97th in the world, which is a very low ranking when you consider the total numbers of teams that are ranked in the World Bowl standings. Banija is the lowest ranked team that is competing in this tournament. And the next best team that is competing in this tournament is none other than Group D opponents Frenline Delpha, who are a massive 31 places higher in the rankings at 66 in the world. So even though Banija is ranked 97th, outsiders will see the team Banija is putting out, and see how well they did in the last tournament, and expect this game to be a tossup, as it should.

Rennidan will definitely be a unique football team to play against. Coming from their own team, they only carry 11 players, who play 2 ways, which means that each and every player will be playing 2 ways, every single down, for the entire game. While that means these players surely have strong motors and immense skill, there is an opening and an opportunity for Horace Browning to wear down their defense by sticking to the run game. Humans can only take so much punishment, and if Banija plays a hard-hitting, smashmouth football game where they hold onto the football, and run the clock, that will be their best opportunity to take a win in this football game. However, this game will start and end in the trenches. If Banija can dominate in the trenches, that is their best chance at winning this game, though if they do not, it will be a long night for the Banijans.

We here, at this magazine, will predict a 10-6 victory for the Banijans. It will be a tough, low-scoring football game between these two football teams, but we are hoping that the depth of Banija will be used against the experience of Rennidan, and that can be used to wear out their opponents and win the game in the 4th quarter. However, the game is not played in print, it is played on the field, so good luck to the boys in green, who will be wearing the Green & gold colors of the Banijan national team. We'll see what kind of effort they can put up against a team like Rennidan.
