Welcome to Valladares!

Map of Valladares (Mainland)

The United Kingdom of Valladares is proud to welcome 56 nations from all over the multiverse who will be competing in the 19th edition of this respectable and prestigious sporting festival called International Basketball Championships, which is coming to this fair land located in eastern Rushmore for the first time. We hope that the delegations of those 56 teams will enjoy their stay in this country.

Overview

Valladares is a country located in the region of Rushmore (yes, we had already said it), comprised of two bigger chunks of territory and the City of Junín, which is an enclave on the shores of the Endemien Ocean, which allow the country's "mainland" to have access to the sea through the Fontvielle-Junín railway. The "two bigger chunks of territory" are the Mainland, located in the Terranea continent, where the capital city Metropolis, as well as the country's most important cities and most of the country's population are located; and the Westlands, which is a state located in the Terramidia continent.

The land that is now the Valladar mainland was inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples, among them the Valladar and Astine peoples, who established their city-states on opposite banks of the Danubio river. Those tribes were decimated by both diseases and colonization processes carried on by Europeans, mainly Spaniard, Portuguese, and French colonizers and missionaries, who also introduced Catholicism into what would became the Valladar mainland. "Puerto Esperanza", nowadays called Westporte, is recognized as the oldest city in the country, having been founded in 1580 by Spaniard explorer Sebastian Cortés. Beginning in the late 16th century, Spanish colonial expeditions explored and settled the eastern region of the Great Inland Sea and the lower course of the Danubio river, establishing the Colony of Río Danubio in 1654, splitting the region into the colonies of Valladares, Iliria, Eterna, and Valle Danubio and starting a 227-year colonial rule that ended with the Second Valladar Uprising and the subsequent War of Independence, and followed up by the Declaration of Independence, signed on October 8, 1881. The Valladar federation was later strengthened by reunification with the Iliria (current Chiquito and Foix states) and Eterna states during the years 1890-1900. Eventually, the reunification of the Valladar states was achieved after the conquest of the city of Tallinberg (now Carloburgo) on March 17, 1909 and the proclamation of the Royal Constitution on July 1, 1910.

Valladares is a federal parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Kings Marus and Cyrus as its heads of state. Four languages are official at the federal level as a result of the colonization processes underwent by European powers during the Colony era. Its advanced economy is one of the largest in Rushmore, built on and mainly relying upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed trade networks. Valladares's recent opening to its regional neighbours (mainly on the sports and diplomacy fields) has helped the nation establish cordial relationships with most of them and has had a significant impact on its economy and culture, although the latter can be questioned due to the fact that its natural social heterogeneity, which was forged through history, makes it difficult to establish a "unified" Valladar culture.

Geography

The geography of Valladares is characterized by its two different regions with their unique characteristics: the Mainland and the Westlands. The former is dominated by the Ituyán mountain range which runs from south to north passing through the nation and separating the country from the rest of the Terranea continent. Valladares's highest mountain, Monte Blanco, is located in this mountain range, near Eterna City and rises up to 4,789 meters above sea level. The Danubio river flows through the nation from south to north, first going through the eastern plains and the capital city Metropolis, then turning westwards and passing through the Ituyán range between the cities of Angostura and Araracuara in the east and Maldonado and Columbus to the west, in the region known as the Cañón del Danubio (Danube Canyon) and then the Danubio valley in the Eterna, Antioquia, and Canalave states. The Ituyán mountains contain some of the country's biggest urban centres: Carloburgo, Eterna City, Campo Grande, and Pradera, however, the capital city Metropolis, along with the entire Foix state and its capital Bezieres and the entire Canalave state and the cities of Canalave and Westporte are located in the plains to the east and the Danubio valley to the west. Peaks in the Ituyán mountain range in the southern half of Valladares (Mountbatten state) reach 3,200 meters above sea level (10,498 feet), while in the northern half (Chiquito and Eterna states) they exceed 4,700 meters above sea level (15,419 feet).

On the other half, the Westlands region is generally hilly to the south and west with a coastal region to the north and east, where the capital city of Edmonton is located. The tallest peak of this region is Mount Rockefeller, which reaches a height of 2,276 meters above sea level (7,467 feet). The population in this region is concentrated in the coastal plains, with 55% of the state's inhabitants living in the cities of Edmonton and Adelaide.

Travel Advice

So, are you still interested in travelling to this nation to support your national team in this event? Well, if the answer to this question is "yes", then here we have some tips for you to make sure your stay will not be an unpleasant experience for both you and us:

1. While the Valladar Ministry of Foreign Affairs usually requires most tourists from non-Rushmore nations to have a visa (usually handed on arrival) to enter the country, fans will only need to show their ticket for a IBC match (as well as their passport) in order to enter the nation. Tickets for group stage matches will be sold and handed over by the competing basketball associations, tickets for playoff matches will only be sold and handed over in Valladares.

2. As the official name of the nation might suggest, Valladares is a United Kingdom, with (currently) two Kings as its Heads of State who are very beloved throughout the country and also seen as a symbol of unity by all citizens irrespective of state and/or mother tongue. Therefore, it is strictly forbidden to insult, slander, defame them and/or any member of the Royal Family, create and/or spread any and all kinds of rumour involving both them and the Royal Family and/or orchestrate and perform any and all kinds of attack against them and/or any member of the Royal Family. Should you are found doing any of the actions mentioned above, you will be arrested, charged with lese majeste, and taken to a trial with the Kings themselves as judges, who shall decide an appropriate punishment as they please. This punishment also includes deportation if the offender is a foreigner, of course.

3. The most spoken language by Valladars during daily life is Spanish, though English will be the main language spoken in parts of the Mountbatten and Eterna states, as well as French in the Foix state, and Portuguese in the Chiquito state. While locals will definitely appreciate that you make an effort to make yourself be understood when seeking help, they will not appreciate at all to see foreigners "butchering" their native languages. So our advice is this one: If you are not fluent in Spanish, French, or Portuguese, do not try to speak any of those languages: that will do nothing but irritate your interlocutor.

4. The rights of freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are fully guaranteed as long as you do not try to abuse of them by doing any of the things described in the second recommendation.

5. Smoking is forbidden at all public places (including stadiums). However, hotels are already implementing "smoking zones" where you can smoke at pleasure alongside other smokers without disrupting the lungs of non-smokers.

6. Valladares uses the Point (PT$) as its national currency, it is one of the Rushmore's strongest currencies with a current exchange rate of NS$1.68 to 1 Point. The Point is divided into 100 Centavos. We strongly advise that you exchange your local currency into Points or NSD as soon as you enter the country, because most shops and businesses will be reluctant to accept other currency than the Point or the Standard Dollar. Credit card holders should not have much of a problem, though.

7. National Parks in Valladares are very well preserved thanks to a strong environmental legislation, and as a result, they are visited by people from all over the multiverse who marvel at the beauty of the landscapes and the variety of wildlife found there. In order to keep their natural beauty intact, it is strictly forbidden to: camp on open field, lit bonfires, litter the ground, and extract any natural resource from them (whether plants or animals). Tours will always be led by two people: the park guide and a member of the Environmental Police, who will be watching over the group and making sure that none of these prohibitions is breached. Those who fail to comply with the rules will be sent to jail for 3 days, fined, and forced to make some "compensatory work" (such as planting trees or cleaning up streets) before they leave the country.

8. Fan groups will be allowed to bring with them their drums and flags to the eight arenas that are going to host matches in the competition. However, flares are not allowed because of safety regulations. In addition to this, the National Police will reserve to itself the right to arrest (and eventually deport) any and all troublemakers within the foreign fanbases. The following events will generate the Police to take action: provoking and/or offensive chants towards other fanbases or groups of people, fights between fanbases from different nations on streets and other public places, insulting banners, etc.

9. The City of Junín is a closed city and as such, it is off-limits to foreigners.

Moving Around

Travelling into Valladares is usually done by airplane, though Juninese citizens should not have much of a problem as they can get easily into the "mainland" via rail. The main gateway for foreigners entering the nation is Stanford-Miller International Airport, located in the town of Villena, in the District of Metropolis. From there, you can book flights to most of the main cities in the nation (including the Westlands), and seven of the other eight venues for the competition (except Fontvielle, which is a short train or car ride from the national capital). Access to the Westlands from the Valladar mainland is possible through Charles V International Airport in Edmonton and Adelaide's Flanders Airport, both with daily flights from Metropolis served by ValAir, Western Airlines, and other minor carriers. Valladares's railroad network is (even though it is mainly concentrated on the mainland) one of Rushmore's most advanced, extensive, and best maintained networks, linking virtually every important city and town in the nation and offering a fast and quality service, which is served by high-speed trains (or TAVs, as they are known locally). National highways are also very well maintained and also link the most important cities, allowing automobiles to move easily from city to city, while most state capitals also have their own mass transportation systems, Metropolis being an example with commuter trains linking it to its neighbouring cities and towns, an underground metro, and a BRT (bus rapid transit) system.

Basketball is a fairly popular sport in Elejamie; not on the same scale as ice hockey, football and rugby, but still popular enough to draw average attendances of 14,000-17,000 a match. The Elejamian Basketball League, which began in 1966, was renamed the Elejamian Premier Basketball League before the 1997 season and is played on a one-game-per-weekday status, is somewhat of an anomaly in Elejamian sports, being the only league to take place in an entire year; the regular season starting on the second week of February and finishing on the fourth week of July, with the play-offs - where the best four teams from the Eastern Conference and the best four teams from the Western Conference play in a best of three quarter and semi finals, with the winners from each conference facing each other in a best of five finals - extending it to either mid-September or early October.

In the last tournament, hosted by San Jose Guayabal and the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Elejamie did fairly well in the group stages, coming second in Group A where they lost only two games; 77-91 to co-hosts and group winners Quebec and 58-72 to Banija (who came third and only missed out on a place to the next round thanks to point difference) on the last two match days. However, this was a sign of things to come as they eventually were swept in the round of 16 by Electrum; losing their first game 60-91 and their second 70-80. Electrum would later be swept - 80-65 on day 1 and 78-69 to day 2 - by Quebec, who would later finish fourth, losing both their semi-final games to Ko-oren (who would later finish runner up to Cosumar) and then losing the third-place playoffs to Saintland.

Head coach Alan Mankiewicz said "I am confident that we will expand on our performance in Quebec. We got some lucky breaks there but they won't last long here in Varredales. We need to buckle down and give it out best shot. Where will we go from there? I don't know. All I know is that this will be a bit of a ride."

Riverside Stadium, Avon, AVEN

Home to the Avon Stars ice hockey team, the Avon Saints basketball team and the national basketball team. Situated close to the Garpu River (hence the name), which separates the twin cities of Avon and Coventry, the stadium can seat 16,250 people (which can be expanded to 17,000 if needs be). From 2003-2009, it was officially known as the Hinckley Bank Stadium due to a sponsorship deal, although fans still called it by its [then] old name.

HomeFiller Arena, Coventry, AVEN

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins ice hockey team; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013. The deal is expected to last until 2017.

  • To my fellow World Cup of Hockey nations: Yes, Mical and Cerin Meloten are related, with Mical being Cerin's older brother. Funnily enough, despite being the youngest Cerin is the tallest brother, being a full three inches taller. There's a third Meloten, who'll be competing in Electrum and New Gelderland as part of Elejamie's women's basketball team, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
  • To the journalist from San Llera: You're pretty much correct about Kris Reece. I might expand on it when I do my pre-tourney RP, such as what clubs he played for and where it was that he was mistakenly put as a SG. I'll also see if I can explain why the smallest player on my team is my starting power forward (hint: his nickname is "The Human Pogo"), along with any other [IC] explanations for why wrong-sized people are doing things; OOCly, it was me not doing the research and giving random heights to people.

COACH
ImageCOACH Paulie Brewster
49yo

Coach Brewster is usually calm, but when he sees the referees make bad calls, or sees his team behind, he gets fired up and starts to yell. He seems to favor his players, whether they're right or wrong. He gives everyone a chance to play, so expect all players to have stats. He also favors offense slightly, so if modifiers apply, it's +1.
POINT GUARDS
Image6 Cedric Philips (starter)
6 ft 3 in (1.90 m) / 187 lb (85 kg) / 26yo

AKA "Chill Phil". Skinny, but very fast, with high stamina and injury resistance. Great in both stealing and passing, not so in rebounding, blocking and strength. Average shooter.
Image17 Darrell Gatson
6 ft 3 in (1.90 m) / 209 lb (95 kg) / 26yo

More of a scoring PG, better shooter than Philips, and stronger, but slower. Prone to injuries, but great at avoiding them.
Image34 Bryan Warner
6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) / 198 lb (90 kg) / 25yo

The "middle ground" between Philips and Gatson in speed, strength and scoring. Corner specialist.
SHOOTING GUARDS
Image40 James Blackwell (starter, co-captain)
6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) / 224 lb (102 kg) / 28yo

AKA "Jimmy B". Left-handed 3-point specialist, also decent mid-range, but below-average close range. Good defender and stealer. Fan favorite because of his game-winning shots and good looks.
Image13 Mikael Larsson
6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) / 228 lb (103 kg) / 24yo

A player you'll love to hate. Hot hand and hot head, shoots well and reacts a lot to referee's calls. Known for taunting opponents and picking up fouls from them.
SMALL FORWARDS
Image30 Frederic Trichet (starter)
6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) / 222 lb (101 kg) / 24yo

AKA "Trick Shot" Trichet. Name a shot, any shot, and he'll make it for you. 4-point play from past the 3-point line, 360 degree dunk, left-handed hook shot, you name it. Not the sharpest knife in the defense drawer, though.
Image1 Marc Stevens
6 ft 7 in (2.00 m) / 231 lb (105 kg) / 25yo

6th man and likes it that way. Above average (but not excellent) in offense and defense who performs better when under pressure. Known for 4th quarter comebacks.
POWER FORWARDS
Image22 Darren Overton (starter, co-captain)
6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) / 260 lb (118 kg) / 26yo

A smart player, good at finding holes in opponents' defense and anticipating plays. Despite his size, lay-ups more than he dunks. Also very calm and has not missed a free throw since middle school.
Image23 Adrian Page
6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) / 290 lb (132 kg) / 23yo

A player who went pro straight from high school. Very athletic, will dunk, block and rebound, but is a bit selfish. He sometimes takes shots he's confident of making, even if it goes against coach's orders.
CENTERS
Image24 Billy Forrest (starter)
6 ft 11 in (2.11 m) / 266 lb (121 kg) / 24yo

College standout, known for his spectacular dunks (but also a threat from mid-range), but a very physical and foul-prone defender.
Image50 Lester Smith
6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) / 257 lb (117 kg) / 25yo

The rare center with a 3-point shot, used whenever Forrest fouls out, but also when they need a quick score. Decent defense, swats shots like the opponent killed his mother.
Image8 Jason Morrigan
7 ft 3 in (2.21 m) / 305 lb (138 kg) / 30yo

The team's "secret weapon", a monster on both offense and defense, incredibly fast for his size, but tires easily.

Changes for IBC 19

Vangaziland made a few changes to their frontcourt this off-season.

Lonnie Knucks is the new center. He is a big player who knows how to score and can play well defensively. He will have a big part in the game plan, with the release of Manny Lenden.

Christopher Ironwrought is also being called up to the Royals. He can add points from the SF or PF spot. He's another fundamentally strong player that will grab rebounds and play defense.

Vangaziland is sticking with Hendorn in the reserve PG slot, which is a sign of faith. There are a few young guards in Vangaziland and based on the media buzz, Hendorn is the player currently on the hot seat.

Kate Foyle is the new assistant coach. She will be bringing the tactical expertise from her Overglade University career, where she has won multiple championships.

Scouting Prospects
F - Manny Battle - 6'9"
G - Sarah Overson - 6'4"

RP Permissions: I plan to RP my stats so no RP permission is given to determine them. Also, no injuries or other weird stuff either.

DRAWKLAND NET CORP
Basketball isn't much of a sport in Drawkland, it being more recent than some of its classic sports. It doesn't draw a large crowd, but the competition is still pretty intense. As a result, the players aren't as skilled as some other nations may be, but Drawkians are naturally tall (the national average being 7'6") so this partially makes up for it during international play.
The players were selected via the normal all-star method in Drawkland. The best player from each of the 32 Professional teams was selected. A clinic was held to determine which players worked best together, and 2 rosters of 16 were formed. 1 team was submitted to the International Basketball Championships, and the other to the Games of the X Olympiad.
The team is Co-Ed and evenly split so, due to the divisions of the Drawkian Basketball Organization, and coaches were selected from the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion team's head coaches from last year's championships. The 3rd coach is the head coach of the current champion collegiate team.

San Llera National Team Roster

Name: San Llera National Basketball Team
Head Coach: Brad Eiffel
Assistant Coaches: Dionis Quoe, Tomas Perrino
Ranking: 23rd
Appearances: 2
Best Finish: Round of 16
Style Modifier: 0
More Info: Here

Coaches
Brad Eiffel - A very young, up-and-coming coach. Led San Llera to two impressive tournaments.
Dionis Quoe - A coaching veteran, who helps counterbalance the inexperience of Eiffel.
Tomas Perrino - Something of a mad scientist. Knows an incredible amount about the sport but can't communicate it very well.

Starting 5
PG Antoni Ferra - 6'4", 210 lbs - 28 years old - Ferra is a defensive nightmare for opposing point guards with his size and length. However, he is incapable of making shots outside of 15 feet from the basket when on offense. Average passer for his position, can rebound very well compared to other point guards.
G Roderic Mieras - 6'1", 190 lbs - 23 years old - Mieras is no longer the youngest player on San Llera's roster, and he has now matured into the player most hoped he would be. He still is a little bit small, preferring to plat shooting guard at just 6'1", and not incredibly large at 190 pounds. Mieras sometimes has trouble guarding larger shooting guards, but he is quick and has good hands for swiping at opposing players. On offense, however, is where he makes his salary. Mieras is an excellent passer and already the best driver on the team. He will torture any defenders who aren't as quick as him, and he shoots well enough to keep them honest.
SF Atualo Vela - 6'8", 230 lbs - 25 years old - The breakout star of the first IBC whilst Ganchana struggled, Vela was, before that tournament, regarded as somebody who was freakishly athletic but not talented enough to keep up. However, he proved his doubters wrong, as he showed an excellent shooting touch and great court vision. Vela is by far the fastest player on the team, and the most athletic, with a 36-inch standing vertical leap. He has also developed shooting and passing skills in the last four years, and will be San Llera's star in this incoming IBC.
PF Carlos Tell - 6'9", 360 lbs - 30 years old - Some years ago, Brad Eiffel speculated that Carlos Tell could become San Llera's best player if he lost some weight. Instead of following this advice, Tell did the opposite, gaining ten pounds since then. Remarkably, at 360 pounds, Tell is still a national team starter. He has excellent post moves and shockingly good shooting ability and speed for his size. With his power, Tell can be a monster on the glass despite his inability to jump more than a few inches. Unfortunately, he still is an awful defender with little mobility.
C Ganchana - 7'0", 240 lbs - 32 years old - The best player on the team entering the first IBC, Ganchana was very disappointing, and now his position as this team's star is in question. He rebounded in the second, but still struggled to find consistency. At 32, his athleticism, which was never his strongest trait, has started to dwindle a little bit. However, his defensive prowess, shooting ability, passing ability, and post ability still remain. When posting up, Ganchana is a nightmare for defenders, with his mixture of power and finesse. On defense, he is also very good, but can't rebound as well as he used to, especially considering that he is constantly nursing a torn ligament. This ligament and his increasing age limit his jumping ability, and he now has to rely on his height to gain an advantage. With more and more 7-footers popping up, this might be a difficult tournament for him.

Bench
G Marco Fuie - 5'9", 180 lbs - 28 years old - Talented, but too short to crack the starting five
G Tomas Bartoli - 6'2", 220 lbs - 27 years old - Classic shooting guard that only shoots. Oddly, is an amazing passer when he tries to pass
G Marco Vas - 6'1", 195 lbs - 18 years old - Not very large or athletic but still by far the best teenager San Llera has to offer with his shooting, ball handling, and smarts
F Xavier Terres - 6'7", 200 lbs - 28 years old - Can shoot but has no athleticism whatsoever
F Lluc Bosch - 6'6", 220 lbs - 29 years old - Very small for his position, makes up for it with an aggressive, sometimes dirty style of play
F Carlo Casanova - 6'9", 240 lbs - 30 years old - Great at three-pointers but can't rebound for his size
C Marti Prior - 6'11", 260 lbs - 29 years old - Excellent all-around offensive player, but is backing up Ganchana

Basketball has the name to be the urban pickup game, but one look at the league table tells you that small cities and huge metropolises both enjoy the fast-paced game. Some nations enjoy it more than others: Kang Rao shows a lot of pride, and so do the southeastern nations of Santa Teresa and the Six Saints.

A part of the championship team of IBC 17 and the runners-up of IBC 18 have said goodbye to the team. They will focus on one last season with their clubs in the domestic league, but will not appear on the team. Wang Shen, Vasco Azevedo, Milena Carlisle, Masao Miura and Solène Dupre have left.

Team name: (Union of) Ko-oren
Demonym: Unionites, Ko-orenites, Greenblues, Dragonflies
Colours: Green, blue, yellow
Style: -5
Style notes: Defence is highly prioritised in the form of positioning. The strong defence comes almost entirely from tactical advantages instead of physical ones. The Union always plays a clean game with few fouls. Offensively, the focus is on running down the clock a little, opening up space for other players, passing and above all waiting for the perfect time to release, maximising accuracy and shot percentage. Threes are fairly common. Offensive schemes are extremely variable and can change every quarter if needed to always get the tactical edge over their opponents.

Starting:

PG - Juliet Shillington (f) - KOR
SG - Leandro Buenaventura (m) - VIS
SF - Katharine Grove (f) - WAR

Ficiscia announces roster for IBC 19

Ficiscia has not often appeared in modern international basketball, but the game is becoming increasingly popular in the west of the country, mainly played as streetball in the cities of Ficiscia. Especially the Insolani see it more and more as some kind of national sport for their region. The Ficiscian basketball team is very young (average age of 22.4 years and 23.8 years in the starting five) and looking to play aggressive, offensive and spectacular basketball. Or as national coach Urbanius Vero puts it: "Those guys learned their game on the street, and if I can't get the street out of them, we will bring the Ficiscian street game onto the court!"

COACHING STAFF:

Headcoach: Urbanius Vero (47, FUL)
Assistant: Sergius Navaias (36, CAR)
Assistant: Cornelius Martini (62, CEN)

STARTING FIVE:

PG: #21 Lucius Astrius (24, 1.83, CAR) - Astrius is a young player coming up and looking to shine at IBC. Unlike the usual Ficiscian, he did not start his career on street courts but always played in the hall, resulting in a playstyle often described as somewhat conservative.
SG: #15 Kyrillos Pacorus (29, 1.97, FOV) - The nation's hottest three-point scorer is one of the most routined players. Precastrum is nicknamed "The General" and will be looking forward to leading the nation to its first IBC.
SF: #41 Michal Rasukas (21, 1.96, CAR) - One of the many young Insolani in the Ficiscian basketball scene. Known for his speed, he sometimes is seen as a bit too tricky - reflected in his nickname "Mr. Good Luck Charm", as he is said to need one to make his risky plays work.
PF: #17 Andrinus Rectus (23, 2.16, SIL) - Andrinus Rectus, easily identifiable by his long dreadlocks giving him the nickname "Bob Marley" under which he is a known member of the Silvani streetball scene, is seen as the successor of Pacorus as the face of Ficiscian basketball.
C: #24 Janis Cantrapas (22, 2.21, FOV) - Another Insolani and known as a provocator. He was ejected from the Ficiscia Street Championships two years ago after insulting a referee, but his technical skills and his height convinced the selectors to take "Machine Gun" to Valladares.

BENCH:

G #8 Manuel Ianicios (28, 1.85, FUL)
G #11 Ioannus Marci (20, 1.81, LUX)
F #55 Carolus Nannajovs (24, 1.92, MOV)
F #4 Alexandros Hephastos (26, 2.06, FOV)
F #75 Valerius Precastrum (27, 1.98, FER)
F #42 Tertius Decurio (32, 2.08, CAR)
C #69 Martinus Nari (18, 2.11, FOV)
C #13 Demas Harnijevs (20, 2.23, CAR)

The Scarlets play a very structured system with emphasis on fundamentals. On offense, the pace is slow with the team more likely to move slowly down the court and set up the offense than rush down the court for quick points. The team will generally try to work the ball into the lane for the center or power forward to put up an easy shot. Players will also take jump shots from outside of the lane. The team limits its attempts at 3-pointers unless they are behind or have a clear shot. The Scarlets play a zone defense and rarely press. Rather than stay tight to opposing players, the Scarlets look to take away the passing lanes. They will step in close only to block shots. The center will hardly stray from the area beneath the basket and serves as the team's primary rebounder.

Uniforms:
The Vaugania Scarlets, in accordance with their home country's shift to more traditional policy and social standards, wears a more traditional basketball uniform. Therefore, the team wears short shorts and white knee socks.

Cosumar National Basketball Team -- IBC 19

Information

Nation - The Fiefdom of Cosumar. A constitutional monarchy renowned for its civil rights, stunning landscape, space program, and sporting culture.

Region - Atlantian Oceania (northeastern)

Demonym - Cosumarite

Team Nickname - Stallions

Domestic League - Cosumar Basketball Association (CBA). Following the RL NBA model, the CBA consists of 32 teams with 16 in each conference (Eastern and Western). After a season of 62 games, the top eight teams in each conference advance to a playoff for the CBA Title. Best of 5 series are used in the playoffs until the conference finals, at which point Best of 7 is used. Four editions have been completed under the modern structure, with the Altamirano Artillery winning the most recent edition for their second consecutive title.

History - This is Cosumar's ninth International Basketball Championships, having participated in all but two editions since IBC 9 in Mytannion. We have always been moderately successful in the tournament, but our first real success came in IBC 15, in which we made a run to the Quarterfinals before being knocked out by #1 Saintland by the slimmest of margins. After further success in IBC 16 and 17, the Stallions finally reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning IBC 18 over Ko-oren in a historic comeback from 2-0 down. Now the defending champions and 3rd-ranked side in the world, expectations are higher than ever. Does Cosumar have what it takes to repeat?

Team Style - +4. Coach Dupree likes to rotate Jeon and fellow young stars Faruti and Na'Gono at point guard throughout the game.

Our designated "star player" if there must be one is two-time CBA MVP Gonzalo Na'Zupito at SG. The talented Vloo has always been a sharpshooter and freak athlete, but he has developed his passing and ball handling in recent years to become an explosive jack-of-all-trades. He will rarely come off the floor, unlike the rotation approach at point guard. Another player that Coach Dupree can rarely afford to rest is volume-scorer small forward Benjamin Seymour, who should lead the team in PPG with his inside-and-out game.

Power forward Severin Søholt is a lethal shooter for someone his size with a sweet touch from anywhere on the floor. A true stretch-four a la Nowitzki. As a result, Cosumar may struggle on the defensive side of the ball this tournament, but their offensive game should be better than ever. Dominik Yaray, as a long and physical defender with more of a traditional post game, will still get plenty of sub minutes at the position though, depending on the needs of the game.

Manning the Stallions' block for the first time is Samu Rudnevs, a slightly undersized but tenacious presence in the paint. As the defending CBA Defensive Player of the Year, he is good for a few blocks per game and goes up strong for rebounds without fail. He is still raw on offense, but is working on his mid-range shot. Many Cosumar fans are doubtful of his place as a starter, especially with tried-and-true Antoine Arthur available on the bench after being a key cog in the IBC 18 run. But age has started to take a toll on Arthur a little, and Coach Dupree is smart to see if Rudnevs can step up. He and Søholt are both capable of running the floor and finishing, though Søholt is nowhere near the monstrous inside presence that Rudnevs (or even Dominik Yaray on the bench) is.

As hinted at above, this is Cosumar's first IBC without all-time great center Ronald J. Savon who has retired from international basketball at age 35. The only remaining player from Cosumar's early days in the IBC is 37-year-old two-guard Jakk Klyde, who remains a vocal leader from the bench and clutch 4th-quarter shooter.

THE KARDASHIA KIBITZER

GIANTS, HORSES AMONG SURGE'S GROUP OPPONENTS

by Ray Wright

The groups for the 19th edition of the International Basketball Championship have been determined, and the Glorious Free Republic has been placed in Group D with world #10 The Andromeda Islands, 16th-ranked Equestrian States, 53rd San Jose Guayabal, 124th Britonisea (who lost the IBC 19 hosting bid to Valladares), and fellow newcomers Pinoistan and the 7-footer-laden nation of Drawkland. Coach Paulie Brewster is happy about this grouping, but says no one is to be taken lightly if the Surge hopes to advance to the Group of 16.

For those who will be watching St. Kanye's very first international match (against Britonisea), they will be wearing their purple jerseys. For those who will be gambling on the results, they are slight underdogs, 45-55.

Bethlehem Athletic Complex
Beta City, Allied States
Monday, July 2
6:15 am

Coach Al Gooden arrived at the Beta City Athletic Center about 15 minutes ago. He arrived early in order to get things ready for the first scrimmage. Gooden often arrives at about this time in order to gather his thoughts and watch the sun rise over the Portsmouth skyline.

Norm Peterson arrives, driving a laughably small hybrid rental from the airport in Portsmouth. Gooden doesn’t especially like Peterson. He thinks Peterson was lucky to inherit the Coaching position in Angeles City after having never coached at any level. A team with a player like Dan Stuckey is bound to be one of the best teams in the league. Peterson just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

GOODEN: Nice ride, Norm.

Peterson struggles out of his car.

PETERSON: In our league, you learn to travel light, Al.

GOODEN: This is true. Why are you so early?

PETERSON: I heard that you arrive early & I wanted to touch base before the players got here. Did you turn the lights on?

The lights over the court could be seen from the street.

GOODEN: A couple of the guys probably came early. Hurley likes to shoot foul shots before practice.

----------

Gooden and Peterson walk toward the locker room. Peterson is surprised to hear the sound of basketballs and sneakers.

GOODEN: Some of the guys have keys. I let them have access during the off-season.

PETERSON: All of them?

----------

They looked to see that most of the 2035 edition of the Andromeda Eagles were already on the court, apparently playing an impromptu scrimmage. Peterson is amazed.

PETERSON: Is this for real?

Peterson looks at Gooden, who appears equally stunned.

GOODEN: I wish I could take credit, Norm. But... I don’t know what to say.

Gooden blows his whistle. Everyone on the court stops.

GOODEN: What’s going on, guys?

Jim Hurley, the Beta City point guard, walks over to Gooden and explains.

HURLEY: Let me explain, Coach?

GOODEN: No need. How long have you been here?

HURLEY: Since five!

PETERSON: Five o’clock on a Monday morning. I got to hear this.

HURLEY: Smooth (Walker) calls me at home. It’s two o’clock in the morning. He’s feeling anxious, because if he goes to sleep, he’ll miss our first practice.

WALKER: Some of us have never done this IBC thing before, Coach. I was up, trying to calm my nerves. I had Jim’s number & texted him. I wanted to get access to the court so I could get my mind right.

HURLEY: I wasn’t sleeping well either, so, I decided to help out. I called Hardwick. I was going to swing around his house and grab the key. He decided to meet us, since he was up. Hardwick called Tommy before I got there...

Hardwick, along with the players, walked over.

HARDWICK: It was a domino effect, Coach. It was odd, because everyone just kind of showed up.

GOODEN: So, everyone’s here now.

TOMMY EGAN: All present and accounted for, coach.

GOODEN: How about a good, strong half of scrimmaging? What hotel are you all staying at?

DAN STUCKEY: The Green Gardens of Beta City, Coach?

GOODEN: That’s two blocks away?

STUCKEY: More like three, Coach!

GOODEN: They got good breakfast, right?

PETERSON: Good enough, coach.

GOODEN: Sounds like a good first day. Let’s run it!

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's fifth time participating in the International Basketball Championships. The last time Abanhfleft played in the IBC they played their best in the group stage, going undefeated in that particular stage of the tournament before a nervy round of 16 scrap against San Llera and then finally capitulating against eventual runners-up Ko-oren. But that wasn't the only thing noteworthy about Abanhfleft's IBC 18 campaign. Rumors of a "relationship" between Abanhfleft's Leo Baxter and Ko-oren's Juliet Shillington surfaced, and while Baxter has emphatically denied the relationship, Shillington has remained mysteriously silent about the whole thing. Time will only tell if this will affect both teams this time around, as it had affected them in the last tournament...

DRAWKLAND NATIONAL SPORTS NETWORK
"Welcome to Catchup Hour at 10 on DSNS! I'm Wendy Halbard, your trusted source for sports info.
"Our headliner tonight: Drawkland makes its debut in Multiversal Sports! The Drawkian Basketball Organization has submitted a team to the International Basketball Championships Mark 19, with the Prime League All-Stars. The Focal League All-Stars will soon make their international debut at the Games of the X Olympiad.
"This being Drawkland's debut, they are currently unrated in the circuit. Fortunately, 2 other teams in their 7-team group are also unrated. The tournament will be round-robin, with each team facing every other team in their draw. The teams with the best 2 records in their draws will advance to the finals.
" Drawkland's team, the Net Corp, being new, is just hoping for a finals spot, or at the least, a winning record. Here's the schedule for the round robin play:
Drawkland vv Pinoyistan, unrated.
Britonisea vv Drawkland, #124
Drawkland vv San José Guayabal, #53
The Andromeda Islands vv Drawkland, #10
Drawkland vv Equestrian States, #16
Saint Kanye vv Drawkland, unrated
Bye

"Coach Cody Morgan is very pleased with this draw.
'This is good for the boys and girls I think. We have bookends with unrated teams, which may or may not end well, but we have a sort of buildup to the most skilled teams. Plus, we have a Bye the last match, giving us time to rest up before the finals, or blow off steam if we don't make it.
As far as skill goes, we're a little lacking. I've seen some really good games from our opponents based on the tapes I've been sent. Our saving grace is the natural Drawkian size advantage, and that the international goals are shorter to accommodate for the common foreign physiology. Because of this, I'd say we'd break about even in skill.' Morgan said to our reporters.
"The team is leaving tonight, so wish them luck. If you are going to the competition to watch our fellows in black and red, the Drawkian Basketball Organization asks that you select tickets in the back rows of the arenas, out of courtesy to other fans. Remember, you're tall, and you represent the Interstellar Empire. Be prideful and mindful of others, please.

" In other news, the Director of the SIDCA announced today ..."

------

Cody Morgan, Sally Hardin, and Henry Drake, the coaching staff of the Drawkian team, were sitting in Morgan's apartment in downtown Metropolon, watching the broadcast.
Morgan had piercing eyes, clear and blue, usually under a watchful eye, like a hawk's.
"Cameras really don't flatter me," he sighed as he looked at the broadcast.
"I don't think it matters," Hardin replied, turning the TV off.
"You're right," the head coach replied as he got up from the couch, "I suppose we need to go now to get to the Farewell Meeting."
"Right," Drake said, "We can talk about final strategy on the way there."
"Let's move," Morgan said, and he put on his signature jacket, sunglasses, and backpack.

Style Modifier (if applicable): +2
Captain: Caleb Burns
Colors: Red and White Home, Blue and White Away
Arena: National Arena (doubles as hockey stadium)
Arena Location: Londinium
Arena Capacity: 14,000
Head Coach: Raymon Guidry
Assistant Coaches: Elmo Cardwell, Nick Goodman

Roster

Starters

G #3 Caleb Burns, 5'10, 34 - decent jumper but real game is driving and dropping dimes, will provide strong veteran leadership
G #8 Omar Martin, 6'4, 25 - combo guard with good handles and a sweet stroke
F #22 Cameron Fischer, 6'8, 26 - Fischer is one of the new breed of forwards, sweet jumper and decent handles, needs to work on back to the basket game
F #41 Kelvin Braxton, 6'9, 30 - Braxton is a tremendous leaper, has the handles to play 3 or 4-spot, added bulk gets him the starting spot
C #44 Ibrahim Mbaraza, 7'2, 35 - Sudanese refugee is a defensive force, offense will never be truly elite, but adequate, will be tested in new starting role

Reserves
G #14 Rey Benavides, 6'4, 35 - Benavides does two things well: defend, and rebound, offensive game is weak
G #12 Lee Morrison, 6'5, 24 - Morrison is a rangy guy, deadly jump shooter with an unflappable demeanor, no D
G #17 Ben Ryan, 6'1, 22 - Ryan is the heir apparent to Burns at the PG spot, already experienced after jumping early from college
G #10 Danny Flowers, 6'3, 36 - improved defender, he can really pop the 3-ball, don't leave him open
F #35 Jean Peltier, 6'10, 25 - Peltier is a traditional back-to-basket big man, great rebounder on offensive and defensive end
F #25 Cody Lewis, 6'6, 34 - fiery competitor, temper gets him in trouble, great outside shooter and defender, will see a lot of time
C #48 David Wolfe, 6'10, 27 - Wolfe earned his way onto the national team by scoring 23 points per game last year, not much in the way of defense

Playing Style

The Lions are playing a midsized and athletic lineup this time around, with one guard at 6'4, two forwards at 6'8 and 6'9, and the center Mbaraza at 7'2. Their main defenses are man-to-man and a 2-3 matchup zone, but have been known to play a trapping 1-3-1, 3-2, or a box-and-one, with Martin as the guy chasing the opposing team all over the court. With Mbaraza now the starting center, they'll probably rely more on that 2-3 matchup zone, as he is notoriously slow of foot. They also employ a 1-3-1 full-court press, with Mbaraza to play goalkeeper in the back. Their game relies on creating turnovers and turning them into points, so they run fairly often. When forced into a half-court situation, they used to dump the ball down to former captain Gary Hale and let him work, or try to draw their defenders out of the lane so that somebody can drive. With the retirement of Hale from international play and his replacement by Mbaraza, the low post game is going to be somewhat less emphasized. Look for them to try to get Mbaraza involved on alley-oops and other plays where he's less than five feet from the basket. Otherwise, the guards are going to have to pick up much of the scoring slack. Omar Martin should help with that, and Fischer+Braxton at the 3 and 4 spots provide some serious athleticism.

Playing Style

The Horneros play a fast-paced and aggressive style, seeking to push the tempo whenever possible. They're the kind of team that almost snatches the ball out of the basket, inbounds it, and is off to the races while the defense is trotting back. They do have a half-court offense, though. The "Horns" or double high post offense they employ revolves around the pick-and-roll. On defense, they usually apply three-quarter court press and stick to their men like glue on defense. This can lead to them getting beaten on the dribble drive, though.

The center, Marcelino Navarro, has risen from rural beginnings to become a force on both offense and defense for capital city club Córdoba C.B. Marco Pereira is a unstoppable force on offense, averaging over 20 points per game in the domestic league, and his defense has gradually become league-average. Javier Medina has emerged as the best point guard in the league, and his smooth handles and passes make this team go. Francisco Aguirre narrowly lost the MVP vote to Navarro last year and is averaging an even 22 points to match his age. Federico Rojas, even though he's a little small for the 3 position, fills his role well as a 3-and-D guy and will be tasked with facing the opponent's best wing player. The subs are mostly veterans on the smaller side, though Paolo Fernández has height and potential in abundance, and the lightning-quick Martin Herrera will be a key player as Medina's backup.
