Aujuittuq - After their first match in the Novaya Zemlya Elite League, the Muskoxen gave a valiant effort yet lost to Partizan Belushya Guba 3 to 4. Dozens of Tarrijaqpummiut were cheering their brethren on and holding signs that read: "ᐊᐃᕗᖅ ᑕᕐᕆᔭᖅᐳᖅ ᐊᖑᔾᔪᐊᖅ [Go Tarrijaqpuq Muskoxen]!" Chief President of the Commonwealth, George Akiraqtuutijut, released a statement on this morning's match:
This was Tarrijaqpuq's first international hockey match and, although our boys lost, they sure gave their families and friends a great game to watch. I am so proud of our hockey team and I speak for the entire nation when I say that I cannot wait to see how they fare throughout the series. Tarrijaqpuq will cheer the Muskoxen on to victory!

Wytropolis MSK+7 6:05am- With Antipha United's first loss on the books in their inaugural season participating in the NZEL, reporters were clamoring this AM for a statement by Emperor Adam. His remarks were brief but certainly not far from the expected party line.

"We remain honored to have been invited to an international league with such fierce competitors," the emperor expressed with a fairly jovial tone on record. "The Alphathetan team will simply have to buckle down after the defeat in Matochkingrad. They have faced far worse in their lives than difficult competitive sports, and will be welcomed home as the heroes they are when they prove it again."

No word as yet if the team will be allowed to repatriate should they finish the season with a losing record.

Aujuittuq - After their second home game, the Muskoxen have made their compatriots proud by scoring five goals to Dynamo Podrezovsk's three. In spite of the Zemlyan media all but writing off the Dynamo players as pushovers, the Tarrijaqupummiut showed the world that even small teams from small stadia can defeat even the most experienced of players. The Muskoxen's current ranking of 11th place in the Elite League is an accomplishment given how green the Tarrijaqpuq players are.

The tribal government and larger families of Tarrijaqpuq are taking advantage of the League matches by bringing in tourism revenue that is providing a veritable jumpstart to the local economy. Despite the tiny population of Aujuittuq, the national government is seeking to develop international relations with developers and hotel chains to establish new branches in the Tarrijaqpuq capital as well as expand the current capabilities of the Aujuittuq Municipal Arena. Chief President George Akiraqtuutijut has voiced interest in having Aujuittuq play host to future international sporting, cultural, economic, environment, and political events in the future.

ICE HOCKEY QUICK SUMMARY: Wanderers kick off debut with a win

14 October 2015

Image

For the newly established Unitia City Wanderers, their debut season in the Novaya Zemlya Elite League started off with a bang this week. Matchday One saw them fight a convincing 3-1 win against Stolitsa Arktiki, supported by a sell-out crowd at the Peace St Arena in Unitia City. Arktiki fought hard throughout the 60 minutes of the game, securing a goal against the home side, however the Wanderers ultimately proved that the foreigners have something to show against the local teams. Unfortunately the Wanderers followed up with a narrow 3-2 loss against Severnaya Oblast, however a 5-4 victory over Avangard Oktyabrgrad has currently placed them at a respectable 6th position (out of 16), well out of the relegation zone for now. It is a good start for a team only established this year, especially one that will be playing most of its games in foreign lands, with 2 additional teams from other Arctic nations playing against the native Novaya Zemyla teams.

Wytropolis MSK+7 6:31am - Still in a mixed season in their debut week with the NZEL, the team has been reported to be in very high spirits coming off of their most recent loss against Partizan Belushya Guba. Žarko Császár was reached for comments early this morning.

"It really was such a thrill to play Partizan," the 25-year-old captain reports. "You know, that's the team we watched all last season, and it was an honour to be on the ice with them this time around. To really see Krasimir Yerokhin and Dominik Shelagin in action-- wow. To hold our own against them, even to lose-- we're very proud."

Császár also cited the performance of younger teammates Lauritz Houtkooper and Draško Browne against Partizan Belushya Guba. Houtkooper and Browne, a new recruit this year, scored both of Antipha United's goals. "We're just so proud of Comrade Draščić and Comrade Lauritz for their contribution tonight. To see them working so hard and so well with the team is very encouraging for the rest of the season-- and for both of them as players."

Although Emperor Adam could not be reached for comment, his staff were quick to note it was because he stayed up late last night watching the match. They further indicated that he responded very well to Antipha United's performance, a hopeful sign for the family members of the team still waiting for assurance that their loved ones will be returning.

SEASON 25
Regular Season - Part 1/2

The second tier of professional hockey in Novaya Zemlya is looking more interesting than ever before. No less than five teams were relegated from the NZEL prior to season 25, in what has become known to hockey fans as "The Great Purge". Traktor, Krylya, Spartak, Dizel and Rapid fans will have to accustom themselves to a life in hockey's backyard. Out of those five teams, Traktor is probably the strongest, with a roster that most would agree is NZEL caliber.

Halfway through the season, Karskoe More has impressed the most with 22 wins and only 4 losses. Traktor and Zvezda are also having good seasons and will be involved in the battle for NZEL promotion. As could be expected, three of the other recently relegated teams follow in spots 4,5 and 6, while Spartak is having a bad season so far, sitting in 11th place with a losing record.

WYTROPOLIS The expansion of the Elite League into other countries around the Arctic has been generally well recieved among Novozemlyan hockey fans, although we have heard the occasional report of grunting among traditionalists. Particularly, the Hockey Federation has faced criticism for the decision to include a team based in Tarrijaqpuq, a country of only 150 people.

Despite the Muskoxen proving to be a competitive team on the ice, it is speculated that the financial side of operations is not going well and is becoming a burden on the Novozemlyan hockey federation. Muskoxen representatives have stated that the team's future in the NZEL is "uncertain".

Aside from that, Arctic expansion has to be considered a success, as both Antipha United and Unitia City Wanderers have showed that they belong at this level, and their rinks have been sold out more often than not.

We met up with Volodya Polzin at the People's Arena in Wytropolis following Stolitsa Arktiki's 3-2 road loss to Antipha United. "We lost and that sucks of course, but overall I think it's great with these new teams," the captain said.

"It is good, both for the league and for the sport in general, and as a player it's exciting to travel to new places. You know, a tuesday regular season game in Podrezovsk or whatever can be boring as hell so I really enjoy the change of scenery. Hopefully they can add a few teams in other places as well."

FAN PROTEST IN KOSTINSK

KOSTINSK Yesterday, fans gathered outside Mesto Geroev Arena to demand changes in the Iskra front office. The club, which finished in a playoff spot last season, currently sits in last place of the NZEL with only one win after 11 games and a spectacular -20 goal differential.

"The word 'Iskra' means spark, but lately the team is looking more like a dumpster fire," one season ticket holder said.

Iskra head coach Naum Sokolov is believed to be close to losing his job unless results improve drastically in the near future. However, fans demand that the entire front office is replaced immediately. Discontent started to grow already in the off season when the club sold their leading scorer Anton Volodin to Metallurg, seemingly without trying to replace him.

The club's president made an attempt to talk to the enraged mob and urged them to show patience. "We have a young and inexperienced team and we are building for the future," he said. This did not seem to calm the protesters down and it was probably only the presence of Kostinsk police that prevented the event from evolving into a full scale riot.

Wytropolis MSK+7 6:07am - High spirits are once again reported from Antipha United after the team's first away game outside of Novaya Zemlya. The riveting 1-1 game was the team's second encounter with the Tarrijaqpuq Muskoxen, this time in Aujuittuq, Tarrijaqpuq.

"It really is a different game this season," reported head coach Wilson Wilson in a phone interview earlier this morning. "Having the boys travel around like this, playing in so many different arenas--and now in totally different countries--it's different. And I think it's finally starting to bring out the best in them. There's a lot less frills and whistles, and a lot more basics being brought to the field. The boys should really be proud of themselves."

After 17 matches, Antipha United stands 5th in the NZEL. Wilson remains cautiously optimistic that the team will maintain itself in the top 8 without too precipitous plummeting, such as was seen earlier in the season. "We're finding our groove," Wilson commented with a chuckle. "And we think the Emperor will be pleased with what he sees for the rest of the season."

WORLD JUNIORS ON THE HORIZON
Novaya Zemlya U20 holds WJHC selection camp

Image
MATOCHKINGRAD 35 players have gathered in Matochkingrad to fight for a roster spot on Novaya Zemlya's U20 national team in the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships. This is also the first opportunity for new head coach Paul Saxton to introduce himself to the players. The 46 year old Kaboomlandia native was hired after the Novozemlyan fiasco at WJHC 9 - known as the "Disaster in Videnhagen" - and is the first foreigner to coach a Novozemlyan team. "I'm really excited, I think we have a good group of players here," Saxton said after the initial intra-squad scrimmage.

On day 2 of the selection camp Novaya Zemlya U20 faced off against Division II team Gornyak Karelka. A close fought game which ultimately ended in a 3-2 shootout victory for Gornyak, but coach Saxton was not too disappointed afterwards. "There were a lot of positives, despite the loss," he said. "The players battled hard and I honestly think we were the better team for most of the game. The shootout is just a gimmick anyways."

Looking at players, there are 12 guys from last year's squad who are eligible to return, but according to Saxton there are no guarantees and every spot is up for grabs. A reasonable stance, considering the mediocre showing at WJHC 9. Saxton has some elite talent on the wings to choose from, most notably Zigurds Zimulis, Foma Khabalov and Evgeni Bespalov who are having good seasons in the NZEL and are virtually locks to make the team. The center position looks a bit thin, however. Valeri Kalagin and Oleg Kazarezov are two emerging prospects who are currently tearing up the junior league but are they ready to take on a big role on the international stage? We'll see. Sardorbek Asylbekov is playing regular minutes for Stolitsa in the NZEL and is a lock to make the team, but he is more of a defensive specialist and not the offensive catalyst the team needs.

At defense, Plamen Mikhailov is by far the biggest name and likely team captain. The 19 year old Metallurg blueliner will make his third WJHC appearance and will probably get all the ice time he can handle, because after him there are few who stand out. Goaltending is also a bit of a question mark. Saxton has to hope that one of Boris Permyakov or Maksimilian Skryabin steps up during camp. Skryabin may have the inside track as he is older and plays in a men's league, while Permyakov is believed to be the bigger talent.

Tomorrow the U20 team squares off against Nyaryaga's men's national team at Dom Khokkeya, Matochkingrad. The game will be televised.

SEASON 25
Regular Season - Part 1/2

The NZ Junior Hockey League is where tomorrow's hockey stars hone thier skills. The league consists of 38 teams, divided into three divisions.
The Elite Division teams play a 52-game regular season with the top 8 making the playoffs, while Second Division teams play 44 games.

Most teams are associated with a professional club in either the NZEL or Division II. There are also a few teams from lower-level clubs and independent youth hockey clubs, as well as government-run hockey academies - a type of institution, also known as "hockey factory", which strives to produce hockey players in accordance with the five-year plan quotas. Additionally, a team based in Zapolyarny, Nyaryaga has been added to help the nation in their effort to develop a hockey program.

Promotion/relegation
The top two teams from each Second Division and the two worst Elite Division teams play a 10 game home-and-away series at the end of the season to determine which two teams qualify for next season's Elite Division.
There is no relegation from Second Divisions. Instead, the Hockey Federation adds or subtracts teams based on which organizations provide a good environment for player development.

Let's have a look at the standings halfway through the season.

Wytropolis MSK+7 6:36am - There are reports of celebration lasting all through the night in Vernyygorod, spilling out well beyond the city center and into the outlying qū. The source of joy is more than just Antipha United's victory over the Rotor Rogachevo at the People's Arena last night; all three of Antipha United's goals were scored by new recruit and Vernyygorod native Ožbej Althaus.

Also beyond thrilled here in the capital were Althaus' teammates Csaba Koenig, Draško Browne, Lauritz Houtkooper and captain Žarko Császár, all also hailing from Vernyygorod.

"We're always proud of all our comrades," Császár reported after the match, "but there's really nothing like seeing a kid from your hometown really coming into his own in the sport you both love. Ožbejić is still brand new this year, and we're already relying on him the way we would rely on Comrade Robert or Comrade Matheson."

Koenig, the all-time high scorer from Vernyygorod was also bursting with compliments for Althaus. "It's what you like to see in your own team, this sort of blossoming. And it's what you're always afraid you'll see in the other team-- which is good, because you hope other teams are watching Ožbej and seeing the wonderful progress we are as well."

A mid-season look at the fiercest rivalry in Novozemlyan sports

BELUSHYA GUBA In earlier years, Belushya Guba hockey was often referred to as the "trifecta of hate". While the third team, Stolitsa, has slowly faded into irrelevance over the last few seasons, the rivalry between Torpedo and Partizan just grows stronger for every year. We all remember the season 22 opener in which 147 penalty minutes were handed out. Nowadays, you could almost say that an NZEL season would not be complete without a spirited playoff series between the two mortal enemies of Novozemlyan hockey.

Last year they faced each other in the semifinals, where Partizan came out on top after an intense game 7. This season, Torpedo looked better initially. Led by their top line of Denis Yemelyanov and the Gavrilov brothers, they bulldozed the opposition to start the season, winning 8 out of their first 10 games, including a 2-1 away win over Partizan. However, they seem to have hit a rough patch lately, with only 3 wins in their last 10, and surprising losses against the likes of Rotor and Krasnaya Zarya. Most recently they are coming off three straight ties which has to be a disappointment for coach Belyakov.

Partizan started the season slower, but seem to have really found their gear lately and at the halfway point of the season they sit atop of the league. As usual, Krasimir Yerokhin and Dominik Shelagin make defenses look stupid on a nightly basis, and Aleksandr Kashuba has stepped up his goaltending another notch. If he keeps this level of play up, there is a good chance he might challenge Torpedo's Iosif Bezukladnikov for the starter position in the next World Cup of Hockey, especially since "Bezu" has been uncharacteristically inconsistent at times.

Next game between the two antagonists will be on matchday 34.

Wytropolis MSK+7 5:54am - After a comfortably long streak ranked 4th in the NZEL, Antipha United has fallen solidly down to 5th after two long, grueling games; first barely eking out a victory in Belushya Guba, then facing the 2nd game of the season without getting a point on the board in Oktyabrgrad.

While the team and coaches could not be reached for comment, exhausted fans have been reporting back after staying up all night to watch the game. Despite last night's riveting 1-0 loss to Avangard Oktyabrgrad, there's an overwhelming sense of enjoying the high level of competition in the NZEL, even when the team isn't winning. Emperor Adam's staff also reported a high rate of imperial approval for the fierceness of the game, valuing the enjoyment of watching incredible competitors over the satisfaction of a better record.

More than that, there's begun to be a movement among Alphathetan youth toward following foreign teams in the NZEL, particularly in the inland qū. A surprising number of bars have begun broadcasting particularly Partizan Belushya Guba and Torpedo Belushya Guba games against teams other than Antipha United. The atmosphere in Tyurderevnya and Édafósákri in particular was nearly as excited and festive as a national team victory when a few days ago on matchday 34, Partizan and Torpedo played one another.

"It isn't that we aren't always rooting for our Tors," a fan explained. "It's just exciting to have a whole league to track. Much more tension. It's the best part of having been let into the League."

Wytropolis MSK+7 6:34am - As the NZEL season continues pushing steadily toward the playoffs, games are getting closer and closer--and the fans are absolutely loving it.

"It's amazing," a hockey fan in Bolotoderev reported. "This is the longest season we've ever had as fans, and we're really getting to see the endurance come through. I mean, we all knew Althaus would be amazing, and Robert and Matheson never disappoint, but we're getting to see so many more colours to the team like this-- especially watching them evolve against foreign teams. It's awesome. We're all hoping Emperor Adam is proud of the Tor's record and lets them play again next season as well."

No word has been sent down from the hill in Wytropolis, as Emperor Adam is currently at the annual education summit in Uostas, but we caught a word with head coach Wilson Wilson, who recently spoke to the Emperor on the phone.

"We're holding strong in fifth place, and the fans are loving it--and Emperor Adam is a fan," Wilson assured. "He sounded happier than he had at the beginning of the season. I think we'll all be allowed home as long as we make the playoffs, and the boys have really been pushing hard to keep us well out of the danger zone. I couldn't be more proud. Well-- yes. I couldn't be more proud."

Season 25 - Matchday #53

Standings GP Pts
1 Partizan 52 73
2 Torpedo 52 69
3 Shakhter 52 64
4 Metallurg 52 62
5 Antipha 52 60
6 Wanderers 52 59
7 Severnaya 52 57
8 Stolitsa 52 57
9 Akademik 52 55
10 Avangard 52 52
NZEL PLAYOFF BATTLE REPORT

BELUSHYA GUBA As we close in on the last week of regular season action, 9 teams are still involved in a battle for the 8 playoff spots. Severnaya Oblast and Stolitsa Arktiki currently occupy the last two spots, tied at 57 points, while Akademik is on the outside looking in with 55. Their playoff hopes are still very much alive though, as they face Stolitsa on matchday 58 and Severnaya on matchday 59. The last matchday will see Stolitsa and Severnaya take on each other at Severny Ice Palace in Oga in what will likely be a thriller.

Avangard sits in 10th place with 52 points and is all but officially eliminiated. Their failure can be attributed to a very poor start to the season, where they won only 3 games out of their first 14. Just like last year, Avangard remains offensively inept and unable to challenge the top teams, despite elite goaltending and solid defense.

Higher up in the standings, we find Shakhter, Metallurg, Antipha United and Unitita City involved in a battle for 3rd and 4th place, which would mean home ice advantage in the quarterfinals. If the Alphathetans get to start at home - look out. They have proved to be almost unbeatable in Wytropolis, losing only 3 games at home all season.

Elsewhere around the league, it is reported that Iskra has finally fired head coach Naum Sokolov. Too late, according to hockey expert Anatoly Timofeyev: "Their season was a write-off long ago. This means they will have to adjust to a new coach just as they get ready for a relegation playoff series vs a Div II team that will have all momentum on their side. Poor timing."

ICE HOCKEY UPDATE: Can the Wanderers hold on for the playoffs?

27 November 2015

Image

UNITIA CITY - As the Novaya Zemlya Elite League heads into its final week, the Unitia City Wanderers look set to secure a playoff spot in their debut season. A 4-3 victory over last-place Iskra Kostinsk brings them to a total of 38 victories, and the team now sits in 6th place. Just 3 points off Metallurg and fellow foreigners Antipha United, the Wanderers will be determined to make their final season matches count.

"The team has fought well this season. For some 6th place isn't the most glorious of placings but considering we're a new team facing some experienced rivals, it's a very pleasing result so far," Ian Richmond said today.

"We just need to hold off our opponents for a few more matches, which I think the boys are capable of doing."

If the team can remain in the top 8, they will be able to advance to the playoffs. If they can place 4th, then they will be able to play their playoff match at Peace Street Arena. The team has also received considerable success on the commercial side - the majority of the team's home matches at Peace Street have been sell-out affairs.

"Coming into the season we did have our concerns as to whether the team would gather enough fans to support the team, especially considering how new professional sport is to Witty Penguins. The government helped pay for our debut season, but coming seasons would have to be supported by sponsors and ticket sales," said Wanderers owner Maria Shanks.

"So to see the team gather such a large fanbase this season, it's really encouraging. And not just for us, but for ice-hockey overall in Witty Penguins. Who knows, we might even see a national side being fielded in the future."

Wytropolis MSK+7 9:15am - As the end of the NZEL season is nearly upon us, fans have begun keeping an avid eye not just on Antipha United but on the teams surrounding--and possibly threatening--their hard-earned spot in the fifth slot.

"It's really time to buckle down," a fan told us last night, barely able to tear her eyes away from watching Partizan Belushya Guba ultimately defeat Shakhter Ulyanovsk. "It's important to see if anyone else will be moving up or down around us. And-- honestly? It's more hockey. That's never the wrong answer."

Fans have been largely focused on Shakhter Ulyanovsk, in 4th, as well as the Unitia City Wanderers and Akademik Sakhaninsk, in 6th and 7th respectively.

"It's crazy," another fan reported. "We've beaten Shakhter Ulyanovsk twice this season--and they're amazing, clearly. "We usually beat Unitia City, but then this last time-- they brought it hard. Wiped us out. Fantastic game. And Akademik Sakhaninsk we've only managed to tie once. It's just a crazy season. I'm already dying for playoffs."

In game 59, Antipha United defeated Rotor Rogachevo 7–3. Shakhter Ulyanovsk lost to Partizan Belushya Guba, the Unitia City Wanderers defeated Dynamo Podrezovsk, and Akademik Sakhaninsk defeated Severnaya Oblast. Keep your eyes on the wire for Game 60.
