I pick one person from each set of 10 World Cups for the starting XI. So one each from each set of 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc.

I then have some discretion over the remaining four members of the starting XI, plus the substitute's bench.

This makes the team representative of the WC as a whole across time, promises some level of investment in the team on the part of current WC participants who might not know who/what Urk, Rejistania, and Alan Belmore all are, but still gives me some discretion how to fill up the team.

Thoughts?

Sounds good to me (hi, I'm the guy picking the opposition).

Sounds pretty reasonable. How big will the bench be?

If this is your way of putting me down gently, you're not getting away with this, Churchy McFriar!

At this point, I'm seeing An Egg as the back-up goalkeeper; but public demand will likely see him get some game time.

My locked-in positions are more or less:

Starting:
Di Bradini [Starblaydia] - Forward
Tzimisces [Holy Empire] - Midfield
Hawk [Valanora] - Midfield
Sho [Ariddia] - Defender*

Bench:
Just an egg** [NEWI Cefn Druids] - Goal
Urk [Giant Zucchini] - Forward

Assistant 'Coach':
Hexatux [Rejistania]

Scout:
The Scout [Cafundeu]

Studio Commentary:
Basil & Theo [Holy Empire] with Jeremy Jaffacake [Audioslavia] and Dazza Dallas [Jeruselem]

Whether Tzimisces is a player only or a player/manager is open to discussion, though I hope I'll be allowed some discretion on my own representative (much as I'd love to pick Ug-Ug, I don't think I can really have two players - though I hope I can indulge myself in the studio reporting).

Note that we also have access to an archived version of the old NSWiki Hall of Fame for jogging our memories over some of the older players through WC 37ish: http://archive.nswiki.org/index.php?tit ... ll_of_Fame

It's forwards that are going to cause us problems. I'm considering lining up with a 3-4-3 formation to allow for forwards typically being more famous than defenders.

* We absolutely need an Ariddian to represent the tournament's founders, and Ke Sho is a two-time WC winner (32 & 34) and one of Ariddia's greatest-ever players.

** An egg's famous defeat of NEWI Cefn Druids happened, I think, outside a WC cycle; however, it did enter WC 13 independently under the formal team name 'Just an egg'.

On a personal level, I'd say Taniquetar (sp?) of Starblaydia in goal.

Also, given it's a team playing us, there's got to be at least one Sarzonian. I'd suggest Brian Wilson myself.

Dacil Taniquentar; he wasn't half bad.

If you need a defender from the big Aguazul/Krytenia showdowns, two good options would be:

Pepe Raúl Corretja (scored the winning goal in the WC57 semifinal, then had a very short-lived domestic broadcasting career)
Garcilaso Criville (only player to get a point-of-view paragraph in the WC58 final)

Corretja was a starter, and Criville a reserve, on the all-time team for the World Cup of Dreams.

Other alternatives are available based on positions I guess, but here's one market inefficiency to consider. :P

No one mentioned Val Kylx yet?

I'll probably third the nomination for 'An Egg', and put Kylx forward, seeing as I don't have any world-legendary players...

To be fair, Kylx was more of a tongue-in-cheek suggestion than a serious one.

But coming to mind now, you could have Jermaine Lewis or Ezio Grassi (both Osarius).

With the World Cup underway, think this needs a wee bumpy.

An IC thread will likely be up in the next few days.

Not a problem. Other nations' anticipation/reaction/apathy to the game makes for a well-rounded thread.

I've been a little distracted the last few days, and have been focussing my NS activity on moderation issues (with my mod account, obviously).

But I'm back to full sports engagement now, and ready to help move forward with this.

Apologies for the third post in a row, but here's where I am so far...

Note that the balance of starters v. bench is fluid; I might do some shuffling to get close to my self-imposed 'one person from each set of 10 World Cups for the starting XI' standard. So, for example, I might switch Vanessa Carpenter to the starting XI and Alan Belmore to the bench. For reference, I'm imperfectly counting Laborious Hawk as a player from the 40-49 cycle given that's when Valanora achieved their peak period of WC success.

I could also potentially remove Tzimisces as a midfielder and make him the manager (which is, after all, where he's achieved his best-known success), but I'd ideally like to keep him on the pitch.

Starters:

GK Osoro Coceres (Aguazul)
DEF Kohev Kuengas-Vaga (Polar Islandstates)
DEF Ke Sho (Ariddia)
DEF Lee Branson (Audioslavia)
MID
MID Laborious Hawk (Valanora)
MID Juan Tzimisces (The Holy Empire)
MID
FOR Simeone Di Bradini (Starblaydia)
FOR Alan Belmore (The Belmore Family)
FOR Lee Sharp (Eura)

Subs
(assuming a RL maximum of six)

GK An Egg (Just an Egg)
DEF
MID
MID Esteban De Jesus (Brazillico)
FOR Urk (Giant Zucchini)
FOR Vanessa Carpenter (Bedistan)

Support:

Assistant 'Coach':
Hexatux [Rejistania]

Scout:
The Scout [Cafundeu]

Studio Commentary:

As you can see, I have five playing slots left to fill.

I've asked Zwangzug via TG to nominate an Aguazul player from the latter's period of dominance in the 50s.

I would be particularly interested at this point in nominations to cover the following teams/periods - not all of whom I can necessarily accommodate, alas:

Az-cz (WCs 37-38)
Commerce Heights/Capitalizt SLANI (WC 15 or WC 39)
Candelaria and Marquez (WCs 45-49)
Liverpool England (WCs 24-30 [over WC8])
Vilita (WCs 20 or 68)
Cassadaigua (WCs 50-51)
Sorthern Northland (WCs 52-56)

And I hope everyone will forgive me for being unable to accommodate an awful lot of very worthy potential candidates. No slight is intended if I leave you out; I just have a limited number of slots to fill.

Edit:

The starting goalkeeper slot is now filled - appropriately by the goalkeeper who stymied Krytenia in the WC 58 final. So just four slots now...

For Az-cz I remember Jorge Shockey, midfielder. For C&M there is Jacob Davies (defender) or Jesse Nakatsuru (midfielder) from this period - (looking only at the free spots).

I'm naming a squad of twenty-three - not all of which will be used, mind - so you're welcome to do the same.

That being said, Callum Banda.

1) I regret that I've never heard of them, so it's impossible for me to recreate their 'voice'. Perhaps they were active during my temporary break back in the day?

2) Basil and Theo are older, and (even if I say so myself) more or less developed the initial template for WC commentary RP across WCs 1 & 2.

3) Basil and Theo have also been active over a longer period (though I use them sparingly these days; there's only so many times you can make jokes about the size of the knockers on the doors of the imperial palace, or avoid telling the joke about the two nuns, the donkey, and the plate of spaghetti).

4) If I'm picking the team, then I think I can be allowed one or two minor self-indulgences.

Updated thoughts; new players in bold, female players starred *.

I've switched Alan Belmore to the bench (and made Vanessa Carpenter a starter) to avoid having too many starters from the very earliest period of WC history. No doubt he'll come off the bench and score, though.

Starters:

GK Osoro Coceres (Aguazul)
DEF Kohev Kuengas-Vaga (Polar Islandstates)
DEF Ke Sho (Ariddia)
DEF Lee Branson (Audioslavia)
MID Jesse Nakatsuru (Candelaria And Marquez)
MID Laborious Hawk (Valanora)
MID Juan Tzimisces (The Holy Empire)
MID Siobhan Ní hÓgáin (Sorthern Northland)*
FOR Simeone Di Bradini (Starblaydia)
FOR Vanessa Carpenter (Bedistan)*
FOR Lee Sharp (Eura)

Subs
(assuming a RL maximum of six)

GK An Egg (Just an Egg)
DEF Kadi Molali (Vilita)
MID Kn-Dg (Az-cz)
MID Esteban De Jesus (Brazillico)
FOR Urk (Giant Zucchini)
FOR Alan Belmore (The Belmore Family)

That looks more or less like a team, deliberately drawn from the entire history of the World Cup.

Any furious objections / last minute nominations before I make this final?

And thank God someone archived those old Jolt threads.....
