The Matekkipper Citizen
Matthewsiania's Number One Newspaper

A fitting track loudly played through the halls of the hotel that the Figs were staying at. Even though they had to stay at Cloudsdale for no good reason beyond the fact that whoever administrated the tournament just really had to hate us. Or at least, it does seem like that when you consider we were the only national team staying at Cloudsdale. Figs are meant to be either at the ground or at a tree. And Cloudsdale's clearly far from both, thank you. Alas, the Matthewsianian national football team tried their best to bring their culture up to the sky as Bressinho himself mentioned that Equestrian States was, by far, the least-developed country he ever played at. And when you consider that he only played at two countries (Manechester City's Equestrian States and his good ol' Matthewsiania), that meant... well, not a whole lot.

First, we couldn't bring our automobiles. The team isn't exactly rich by any means and only five players had an actual vehicle, which range from the two Lanzano 89' Superioris (known as one of the fastest and most expensive cars from Northern Sunrise) to a good old van that Hugo Centopéia had bought for his family to sell hot dogs at the city plaza back at Patópolis. Yes, football doesn't pay a whole lot at Matthewsiania and the fact that these players aren't really the richest ones the country had brought a lot of questionable practices. Either way, even Hugo's old van wasn't allowed into the borders because of how the country was very... well, green-loving. Our good old Matthewsiania isn't bad at that regard, but it allowed cars with a rather compassionate train and subway mean of transport that also involved a good amount of buses and even vans, most of these running illegally but when compared to Equestrian States, they were pretty much eating frozen oil with a glass of gasoline.

Second, Harmonism sucks. No, not as in it's a terrible religion (and may I say sorry if it somehow offends people), but the fact that these people have grown for quite a while under their own religion causes people like us, fully Christians, to be a bit left off. Not that it's bad or anything, but we have been avoiding going to their Christian-like churches for fear that we might end up on some sort of confusion regarding what we think of our saviour. Alas, it doesn't suck on its' own. But it does suck on this particular part that really affects us.

Third, Meat. Equestrians truly dislike the idea of eating meat. Which we can understand when your country depends heavily on vegetables but, thankfully, there are some exceptions such as some restaurants that are owned by humans. That's a good thing. The bad thing is that humans are pretty rare here. So yes. Stuck eating vegetables. It's not bad, but we should've gotten more freedom. Anyways, guess it doesn't hurt to just eat green, but we could use some chicken meat.

Fourth, this city is unstable in all means of the word. It's high on the sky. We wished the name was just some joke, but it turns out Cloudsdale is in the clouds. It's funny that a weird name actually has a fitting name. Patópolis doesn't have ducks, Lokomotiv isn't a big train that serves as a city, Vesper doesn't have Wasps... the list just goes on. So when the team heard about Cloudsdale being in the skies, they thought it was a joke. And it's not hard to see it that way. Until Bressinho commented that it wasn't a joke. Equestrian States is just like that. Our arrival at the hotel was kinda nice, to be fair. Though it was more on our own than what the Equestrians prepared for us. It was almost like they didn't expect us here...

Our talented forward Werdickley Safadão seems pretty content with being at Cloudsdale, though.

Oh. And the Group. Yes, Matthewsiania is at Group C. A brief look at it reveals five unknown names to the World. Granted Matthewsiania's also an unknown name to the world, at least we featured on some Heritage Cups. And there's nothing the snobs at the World Cup can take that from us with. The names of Vermark, Velstaende, Flardania, Eupheos Anetus and Kazirstan are... somewhat weird, but some proper analysis might reveal what each team hides.

Let's start with the one that makes most of the noise. Eupheos Anetus seems like a good team and the fact they have been spending a good while playing friendlies as preparation for the Baptism of Fire either shows a team that truly believes they have a lot of field to grow over or a team that really doesn't expect stamina to be their problem at the Baptism of Fire. There is a lot of word from their media regarding some of their starters, ranging from Bishop's defensive skills or Reed's Sunrisian-like dribbling and what not. A loss might shut them up, a win might make them talk a whole lot for the next years. We'll be facing them for Matchday 4 at Ponyville.

Another team with a whole lot of backbone has to be Flardania, the Japanese-et-French Kitsunes that most likely sleep with a picture of their coach tucked at their arms. Granted, he seems pretty sympathetic from what we could gather but for some reason, they seem a bit familiar at that... What's the name of the other country this tournament's being played at? Ah, yes. Mizuyuki. For some reason, it seems like the Kitsunes would be an awful lot at home if they played there right from the start. Considering they sound like the love children of Mizuyuki-jin with Sunrisians from Jaunepont, it only seems fitting. The one good (and bad) thing that we could gather from the Kitsunes is how they clearly do have a best player in Joseph Yabuta, whom should start looking into a foreign club career after this event if they do perform well enough. We don't know what a loss could do to them, but a win would make their manager even more sympathetic and we clearly can't afford that. Matchday 3 at Cloudsdale is where and when we'll play them.

The Hounds from Vermark are one team that doesn't really need to talk for itself. The Varish squad, backed by an Euraleague player in Samuel Salquist (from the National Cup champions of Eura Old Boys Club) and unsurprisingly spearheaded by Erik Hjamar, currently playing at Semarland with Molsbik Arkjet, though it seems that the players that are currently at their league seem to be where it's at. Names like Henrik Stevensson, David Isacsson, Emanuel Clausen and Reid Sorensson could easily take this group with a halt. Oh. And having Ronald Dinlund at the net seems promising enough. We're playing them first, so you can all assume what win or loss means here. Three points or no points.

Velstaende's Mountain Lions (or how we prefer to call them, the Mountain Nords) seem like a good team to face at this point. A team based heavily at their own league's market, we would love to say that they're one of the favorites, but even though this tournament lacks actual favorites, the Velstaende team seems like a could-be background character of this group, even though they don't deserve such fate. Hopefully, they'll play more than what we expect. A loss could make them fulfill our expectations, but if they win... they might change, who knows.

Kazirstan. Good chaps. A loss for them keeps them as good chaps. A win for them makes them not-as-good chaps. Good chaps still. And very good chaps at that.

"Er... Mago, sir?" asked Lavina, the unicorn sent by the Equestrians to help the team around.

"Yes?" asked Mago, the team's coach.

"I think you were actually supposed to stay at Ponyville."

"...Well, screw it. We already paid our stay here anyways. Bring the damn Broccoli."

"...and sadly, Miss Gala could not make it to the gala held in her honour. She mysteriously vanished after making comments against leader Lindsey Wells on Thursday. We hope that she is found safe and returned to her family in due time."

The anchor's throat quips, as she turns to the sports reporter to her right. Both begin to have a conversation, discussing the next segment.

"And in lighter news, we take a look with Irvin van Jacobson and sports! The Baptism of Fire is due to start, and Irvin's twenty-three part series on each player is coming to a close tonight! Care to elaborate on those who've missed out?"

"Absolutely, Christiane! Leroy Finley and his dark past as a hitman, the four lands from The Transmission Party and their career as painters slash footballers, Corey Black's opinion on playing in the forsaken Yttribia, and now...our finale! Sebastyén Baumbach. Twenty-three. Captain. And...aspiring rapper. I flew out to the Equestrian States for a one-on-one interview with this interesting enigma. Ron, roll the clip!"

A small segment on Baumbach begins to play, with van Jacobson standing outside the Varmellese training facility.

"The final segment of my twenty-three part series brings me to this enigma, this mysterious, this pretentiously okay player. He's Sebastyén Baumbach, and he is the definition of the schoolyard wannabe. Although instead of the schoolyard wannabe, he is living the 'I am now the best' sort of life! We're now going inside to sit down for a brief Q-and-A session with the self proclaimed legend of Varmellese football, so follow along!"

The clip cuts to van Jacobson and Baumbach sitting in Baumbach's small residential area. Baumbach, in addition to his BVF tracksuit, gifted by the Board, is adorned in gold jewelry, silver chains, and has obnoxiously large glasses. Baumbach has perfect vision without the glasses. He wears a beanie, and sports a goatee that was modeled off of 'the homeless bloke I met while back home.' In addition to his somewhat unorthodox look, he is accompanied by one large bodyguard, emphatically known as "Grand Stan." van Jacobson is visibly nervous at the sight of Grand Stan, and Baumbach tries to ease the man.

"You alroight, mate? Looks tew me yer a bit...down the drains. 'Sthat so?"

"No, it's just the fact...that 'Grand Stan' is looking at me in this scary manner. I mean, I feel the next millimetre I move, I'm going to be speared by him. And honest-"

"Ough, no! Gran' Stan don't bite? Da fool is obviously the realest 'G in da room, ya feel? He's just here to fight off fending fans from the hip hop world. They all want a little ink on their CDs, but I want to leave this group off of GD. Well, nowt really, considerin' da fact dat ya wanna git a flawless group stage, ya feel?"

"Woah, woah woah. I did not know you were a rapper. Is it alright if you can...erm...give me a couple of lines?"

"Yeah, sure. No prob. Gran' Stan, play the track."

Stan unfold his arms, revealing a small remote that controls the stereo system, and plays Baumbach's track (OOC: here). Baumbach is moving his head to the rhythm of his "sick" beats, as he then proceeds to rap the first verse of his song.

"Now we live till we old, bitter nightlight
Giving birth to a foal, before she stole
And the smart don't wanna be
smart muttering 'stuttering'
Wanna be stung by the flung hung bumblebees
Acting like a vulture, hunting poachers
Imma feel the rhythm full swole: told ya and sold!"

van Jacobson looks at Baumbach with a disgusted look as Baumbach himself is trying to freestyle his way out of there, but fails miserably.

"Sebastyén...maybe a rap caree-"

Grand Stan moves closer to van Jacobson, as Irvin tries to fix the situation at hand.

"...is the best damn thing you have to look forward to!"

"I appreciate it, Ignatius."

"It's Irvin..."

"Whatever man."

"Right, now last question. If you were given the chance to form a starting XI with anyone of your choice, who would be on that Starting XI? Maybe the Timo Syke, the Xavi Vilhjalmsson, the Caravella, the Gentle Breeze-"

"Myself times two, Val Kylx times three, Jacques Bressler times three, and Rodolfo Zelaya times three. I'm being humble right now, by not choosing myself eleven times, you know."

A voice over of van Jacobson's voice played as a still frame of himself stared, wincing at Baumbach.

"At this point, I realized we had encountered the most idiotic man in the world. How this guy got a record deal, surprising. How this guy got called up is baffling. How this guy is actually okay at the game of football? It's incomprehensible. I decided to ask Varmelle's 'tour guide' per sé, Jemmy. I asked her about Baumbach, and here's what she told me."

A clip of Jemmy played, showing her disgusted face at the mention of Baumbach.

"Easily the biggest arse in the world. I swear, how could an idiot like him exist."

"I do wonder as well, I do as well."

The segment ends, and Christiane's face is blank after seeing the segment.

"We-we'll be right back."

Laughter is heard as the station cuts to a commercial break. They realized the captain of Varmelle's squad was a nincompoop, and they realized how stupid the head coach, Ferdinand van Tango, was. This was going to be an interesting Baptism of Fire.

BEFORE THE GAME wth Shop Owner & Jimmy Wonder!
SO: Woah, Jimmy, look at that crowd.
JW: So many Swordean fans. There must be some Fratton fans somewhere.
SO: The flares... The flares... Yes, the fans have illegally brought their famous red & white flares over with them to Mizuyuki.
Image Some of the red flares Swordean fans have lit for the Fratton game.
SO: Jimmy, what's your result prediction?
JW: TSB 2-0 Fratton.
SO: Oh, OK. I still can't stop staring at the flares! We have the best supporters in the competition at the moment.
JW: And it's still 4 hours til the game.
SO: So... Our group draw. Easy?
JW: Aynard, Fratton, Maretta, Pridnestovia, Nurkama and us. Should be a good one, but tough. BUT exiting in the group stage means the lads will need a whipping.
SO: Easy on the whipping, Jimmy. Happens to often, but hey, that's part of being a Corporate Police State!
JW: Yep, it sure is. Anyways, Mizuyuki is awesome... Just brought 4 $.99 Hot Dogs at the food stall! Taste is very good.
SO: Anyways, we should win the group.
JW: Oh yea- We're promising this for real, right Shoppa?
SO: Promising what?
JW: *wink* *wink*
SO: Ah! If The Sword Bloke win the 58th Baptism of Fire, we are promising a new Swordean soccer video game for the multiverse to be available exclusively in Dream Games stores.
I did alright...
JW: Good on ha, Shoppa! Moving onto another topic, Mizuyuki's Brownies taste like, brownies!
SO: I can execute you Jimmy, y'know mate. You are still playing for That Team I, the incredibly Handsome Shop Owner Supports. Easy on the brownies and $.99 Hot Dogs and sodas.
JW: Yessir!
SO: Well, that's time for this edition of 'Before The Game'. See you at our next match, hope we win vs Fratton! Now, I'm off to enjoy $.99 Hot Dogs. Jimmy stay here for 2 minutes.
JW: But the match is soon!
SO: 4 Hours isn't soon. Now be nice to the audience and say bye or I'll give my wife the job!
JW: Sigh... See you soon! Though we will commentate the game for Swordean audiences...
SO: Why'd you say that????
JW: I dunno,
Audience: Yea! Carn Jimmy! Go Shoppa! *Loud Clapping*

BoF 58; Korchayk Win First Game in The BoF
By Jaledar Papatya
Korchayk's first game in the Baptism of Fire against Flick Jostle ended in victory for Korchayk with the captain Yusuf Zinnur scoring the only goal. The Wild Ground, located in the forests of Everfree, was at its full 56,500 capacity. Korchayk's devout fans made up for a good 30,000 in the crowd and were much more vocal than the Flick Jostle fans. It was a sunny day in the Equestrian States and, prior to the match, you could hear the chattering of a variety of creatures. However, this was soon drowned out by the klaxons and drums of the Korchayki fans, who were out in full force to support their team.

Formation
Korchayki manager Rauf Zafer Tangör kept his formation and team the same after the final friendly success. Employing a 4-5-1, Tangör kept Görkem Konnur, Tangör's and Korchayk's number one goalkeeper, in goal. Omay Ubeydullah and Dalan Şehsuvar remained in centre defence. Ahmed Iğla remained benched, freeing up space for Hakan Peyami to remain in the side. Koray Zihni retained his position at right back. Demir İlaydın maintained his role the team as the centre defensive midfielder. The wide positions were filled by Kâmil Gazanfer and Tanyel Işılak. Beyond the left and right midfielders, Şadan Yahya and Osman Hakkı played as the attacking midfielders. The striker role was filled up by Yusuf Zinnur. Ali Uktu, Ahmed Iğla, Bafun Vahit, Mustafa Faik, Jek Rıfkı, Hüseyin Akgüç and Sadık Saadeddin were on the bench.

Match Report
Flick Jostle kicked off the first half. Korchayk, wearing their away kits, were aggressive to win the ball but gentle and subtle when in possession. In the seventeenth minute, the first shot of the game came from a Korchayki foot. Kâmil Gazanfer put a great through ball to Zinnur. Zinnur took a touch and then smashed the ball towards the top right corner. However, unfortunately for Korchayk, the Flick Jostlean keeper tipped the ball over the bar. That was the most exciting period of the first half, with a few pot shots from both sides flying high or wide. The first half ended with Korchayk having had 65% possession in the half and one shot on target, compared to Flick Jostle's 35% possession and no shots on target.

The second half started in a much more positive fashion. Korchayk kicked off and, just five minutes later, scored. The goal came from a counter attack. Flick Jostle had won a corner with their first shot on target. However, Omay Ubeydullah cleared the corner with a strong header. This header reached Yusuf Zinnur, 10 metres from the half way line. After a great turn, Zinnur began to run. Fortunately for him, the majority of Flick Jostlean defenders were in the Korchayki half for the corner. He just had to sell a right back a dummy and then he was through on goal. A simple finesse shot was all that was required to beat the 'keeper and send the Korchayki fans into a frenzy. Yet, despite the attacking threat Korchayk possesses, there were no more goals nor shots in the game. When the game ended and the Korchayki players walked off the pitch to rapturous applause, the manager knew that they were joint second in the Group B table. However, the players and fans couldn't afford to get too excited. Korchayk's next match was against Sylvackia, who had just put six goals past Seventeen Syllables.

HOW?????
A Kingston George header in the 54th minute of the Fratton-The Sword Bloke clash in the BoF was enough for the Swordeans to lose their first game. In a major disappointment for the Swordeans, who came by the hundreds to Mizuyuki for the game, the Swordeans are now stuck in 4th in their group, with 4 games still left. However, Shop Owner is confident they can still top their group and even go all the way. "A little fortune is what we need." said Shop Owner, who will stay in Mizuyuki until the end of the final, attending all Swordean games, the 3rd place playoff & the final. But for now, we can leave you with a great Shop Owner quote from the beginning of earth in 2 AD.
"Never will the Swordeans fall, rising is all that's possible if you come from this great nation, The Sword Bloke.

Renatiem Crushes Waternadearthistan

Image
A Renatian Squad Player scoring the first goal

Last night in a thrilling game on Mirai-kan Stadium in Hyuga, Renatiem crushed the opponent named Waterandearthistan with the score of 0-3. The Renatian squad did an amazing performance and showed that they can be a competitive squad in this edition of Baptism of Fire. Defeating a favourite and being on the top of its group in goals difference, with the other two winning squads, Thibaut and Aloquirbe both winning 0-1 their respective opponents.

The usual lineup of Wendelin, the amazing goalkeeper who did a stunning performance yesterday, saving some of the shots made by Waterandearthistan player, whom apparently didn't have any names to their shirts, which seemed very weird for us. A rosterless squad. Then we've got Gregor, who did an average performance last night, stopping a couple chances of his opponents and giving passes to the sides on the adption game that the team plays. Then it's Eckhart, the person that prevented Waterandearthistan from scoring the first goal of the game in the 4th minute. That central defender was the one who was heading the ball outside the box with his strong headers when it was a corner or a foul. Then it's Hermenegild, that left defender gave the pass the goalscorer of the first goal of the game. He also did some extremely good passes from the left side of the pitch, that young player has potential. Ælfstan is the next one, prevented a couple of crossings from happening, changing the tactics of the game, very average perfromance by him too. Then it's Herbert, scorer of the second goal, assisted Iunius for the third one, he was the man of the match this time. being the leader of almost every chance Renatiem did last night. Iunius is next, assisted Herbert for the second goal, scored the third one, a nice performance by him too. Konrad now, did an unexpected good performance, scoring the first goal, being assisted by Heremengild. He was the player with the least chances to score a goal and predictors gave 15,000 Queroes to whoever got it right, this means around 7,500 NS$. Horst is next, a medium performance by him, not participating in many chances, did a shot which went for a goalkick. Æðelberht is the next one, he did not score a goal but made heck a lot of chances for his team but were saved or went to a goalkick. Burkhart is the last one, he also done many chances but failed to score too, many of his chances were saved and even his strong header was saved.

The match began badly for Renatiem, as Waternadearthistan made the first two chances, one almost finishing to a goal but was luckily prevented by Eckhart. Hermenegild, started the first chance for Renatiem, he passed the ball to Iunius who crossed it to Æðelberht who missed it face-to-face with the keeper who saved the ball in an extraordinary way. hermenegild, kept the pressure made passes to Iunius and Herbert who were continuously passing to the attackers, who were constantly missing the shots. Then Heremenegild, upset of the miss of the shots, gave the ball to Herbert whom gave it to Konrad who did a far range shot and scored it to the upper-left corner of the opposing keeper. The half ended with 0-1, a fair advantadge for the squad. The second half began greatly for Renatians, Herbert and Iunius exchanging many passes with the first one scoring in the 72nd minute with a far range shot, around 27 meters outside the box, ending into the net. Then on the 88th minute, Iunius was passed by Herbert and scored another goal for the Renatian squad, confirming the victory with 0-3. When the match ended, all the Renatians went up and started celebrating their first international win.

The Kitsunes currently third in Group C
Manehattan, Equestrian States- Flardania's first game in the Baptism of Fire against Velstaende ended in a 0-0 draw. Derby Field here in Manehattan held 25,778 devouted Kitsunes fans. The Otaku Army came vocal as drums, chants, banzuri's, and giant anime posters of Key Players were draped in the fan section. Velstaende fought tooth and nail with their very tough defense providing little oportunities for the Kitsunes to score. However like Kyosuke preped his team for was getting back to defense quickly after a failed offensive attempt seemed to have worked. For the times Velstaende did shoot on goal, Rodrigue "the wall" Garidinier was there to keep it tied. An unfortunate night for Yabuta and Osada for whenever they managed to escape the extremely defensive minded opposition they had poor attempts or opposition goalkeeper dampening the mood. Coach Kyosuke was satisfied with the draw.

"....I'm satisfied with a draw because a draw gets you points and has us in third. As long as we are at 3rd place or better in the group our tournament dream stays alive. We went in against quite possibly the most defensive team in the whole Baptism of Fire that countered us at every failed attempt and we drew. Despite being offensive minded we had great fundamentals to hold off all counter attacks. And The Otaku Army fan section was providing our players energy. In a match where losing would put us in a bad spot. We passed, is it the best spot? no it's meh, but workable. Our next opponents we have only lost or drawn against them in friendlies. Hopefully we are prepared enough to win this time or draw again. Now the team is off to bed as we want to be well rested for our next game."

The Kitsunes next opponent is the team hailing from Eupheos Anetus. During friendlies the Kitsunes managed to draw and lose to this team. Since that loss and especially since they where drawn into the same group as Eupheos Anetus, the team toke some time to review film of the games as they look to improve against another defensive minded team with more offensive capabilities than Velstaende. Many Flardanians are hoping they can win this time not just to advanced into a better position in the group but to also not have a team that consistently best them. For those at home games can be seen on Nagatomo Sport Network (NSN) and Saito Broadcast Channel (SBC) in Japanese or French. For those seeking english broadcast check local network listings.

PRIDNESTROVIA EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS WITH RESOUNDING 6-0 VICTORY OVER AYNARD IN FIRST BAPTISM OF FIRE MATCH!

By Gustav Tyumenov

Image
An Aynardian player attempts to break through the stiff Pridnestrovian defense in Mirania Infinita Stadium, Kagura, Mizuyuki.

KAGURA, MIZUYUKI - The Pridnestrovian national football team recovered from their heartbreaking friendly loss against Abanhfleft in typical Pridnestrovian style by performing the same humiliation that was done upon the national team on another nation's team. This unfortunate team was Aynard, whose players had stepped onto the field without names on the backs of their shirts, a clear violation of about a thousand international football rules, according the Great President Field Marshal Stepan Stepanovich Stepanenko's interpretation of them.

Five different Pridnestrovian players contributed to the nation's first victory in the Baptism of Fire, with Germanski-born Peter Schermer bagging a brace for his nation.

Half-Balgarski Boyan Radev opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a cracking shot with his left foot that the Aynard keeper was powerless to stop.

Vladislav Bogomolov followed up with a goal of his own in the 42nd minute by poking the ball past the keeper after a corner kick from Yaroslav Wasylyshyn.

Just three minutes into the second quarter, Wasylyshyn himself was on the receiving end of another corner kick, this time from Dumitri Anghelescu.

Peter Schermer began Pridnestrovia's routing of Aynard in the 67th minute by scoring a free kick from 31 yards after he was brought down by an Aynardian midfielder.

Selim Tiryaki, the half-Turkiyenik leading goalscorer of Sheriff Tiraspol, got his name on the scoresheet by taking advantage of a mistake on the Aynardians' part and then smashing it into the high left corner of goal at 83 minutes.

Schermer completed the Pridnestrovian victory two minutes later by scoring another free kick, this time from just 27 yards, and with Tiryaki and Wasylyshyn acting as decoy kick takers.

Manager Werner Ceausescu was very happy with the result during the post-game press conference.

"We've taken a step in the right direction," he said. "We need more games like this to show the multiverse that we are a strong football nation, and that we can compete with the best of them. We must keep the victories coming, so that we will finally get our hands on that coveted trophy."

Pridnestrovia's second game will be against Fratton in Samukawa Municipal Stadium, Kagura, Mizuyuki. The match will be broadcast live on the PCNA television channel at 4 PM.

Fratton 1-0 The Sword Bloke

Kingston George was the hero as Fratton won their first BoF game against the Sword Bloke. Fratton dominated from the start, with the Sword Bloke goalie doing well to prevent them from scoring. A corner was all it took to make Kingston win the game. The Sword Bloke played better after the goal, but will need to perform better for the rest of the tournament. Fratton played well, but will need to focus on shooting on target and making more opportunities count in time for Match 2.

Kingston George:
"It was a good game, glad we got the goal. I'm sure that we should have scored more, but the Sword Bloke goalie and some of the defense made that not possible. It was a decent start though"

Everfree, The Equestrian States

The Korchayki National Football Team had checked into their hotel room. After a lively celebration at the hotel bar, the management had ordered the players to retire to their rooms. Osman Hakkı and Yusuf Zinnur, who were sharing a room, were ascending to the fifth floor. The lift was silent. Osman fiddled with his fingers while Yusuf nosily chewed gum. A high pitched ping broke the silence. The doors slid open effortlessly and the two players walked out. After a short period of time, they reached their room's door. Opening it with a swipe of the key card, Osman and Yusuf entered the room silently. Simultaneously, the two collapsed on their separate beds. Osman took a bottle of water out of his bag, sipped it and began to talk.

"Yusuf, this place is weird."

"What?" snapped Yusuf.

"The Equestrian States," explained Osman. "It's weird."

"Give me an example."

"Well, you know our liaison officer, Violet Wish or something?"

"Yes?" said Yusuf, bemusement heavily present in his tone.

"She's a unicorn," exclaimed Osman. "What's up with that?"

"Dunno," replied Yusuf, unconcernedly. "I read a book on the Equestrian States before we came here. They've got all kind of weird stuff here."

"But why?"

"Dunno."

"You're really boring sometimes Yusuf."

"Oh I'm sorry," jested Yusuf sarcastically. "Should I be more like a unicorn?"

"Shut up Yusuf. It's a land of freaks and I don't like it."

Article by: Štefan Hornik

The Renatian Official languages list has completely changed over the last centuries, with changing the official language of Renatiem from Latin, to German even the Tirol, but hose languages were never spoken by the majority of the population and 85% of the popualtion the last 2 years had complaints of not understanding the Tirol language and 10% of the population have misread many messages and lost inside the nation's boundaries or even went to the neighboring nations, especially the country of Austria to the east, the place which has too many German and Tirol signs.

Today, the Duke of the Duchy of Renatiem, has decided that the Slovak language will be the official language and since 95% of the population speak it, there should be a problem less for the people and now 3,500,000 more people are happy with language of Renatiem. But it went further, there will be bilingual or even multilingual signs in Renatiem. Depending on the location and the speaking majority of the region. Such regions as the capital will have only Slovak and English for the tourists. Such place as the second capital, will have Slovak, Czec and English for the tourists and Czech and Slovak tourists will be handed manuals of the language and hwo they are spelled. The tourists from other countries, depends on what region they join, they might speak their mother tongue or English.

Walamzia Lose 1-0 in Baptism of Fire Debut

Brian Clough seemed none too pleased with the officiating at the first Baptism of Fire game for Walamzia. Thibault's goal was scored when their striker was almost in Peter Howard's face when the ball was delivered into the box. The linesman was in line with Walamzia's backline, but he was obstructed by the sun in his eyes, so he could not call the offside in that situation. Here are Clough's post-match comments:

"The linesman should've been wearing shades. If he's complaining about the sun in his eyes, he should be wearing shades. That was an elementary offside call that he missed. I'm not mad at our defense because they actually did their job. We kept a clean sheet, even though the stats don't tell us that. We just have to get Trumbull to start firing away at his chances, and we'll be a good team, and a team to beat in this tournament."

Mark Trumbull spoke to the media after the game about the inability for him to create chances for himself.

"Obviously, tat's a part of my game that I need to improve on. I've had excellent service in the friendlies, so that was very good preparation. They closed me down well, so I can't fault my wingers. In the end, they dominated us."

MARETTA POST

MARETTA WINS FIRST GAME WITH THRILLING DISPLAY OF FOOTBALL

by Stanley Grace

KAGURA, Mizuyuki - It was the first competitive game for both Maretta and Nurkama. As the two sides walked out, they were greeted by cheers and applause from the host nations' fans as well as several hundred diehards who came to support their own nations. The national anthems were sung, and the teams exchanged handshakes. Both captains met at midfield for the coin toss; which Nurkama won. The time was here at last; the referee blew his whistle and the game between Maretta and Nurkama was underway!

In the first half we saw Nurkama put up a few shots on goal; one of which hit the post and the other inches above the crossbar. We could pretty much tell what the mindset of both nations were - one side to keep attacking and pressuring, while the other merely played a defensive game. Nurkama's attacking form would however disappear after a controversial foul was called 32 minutes into the game. Player #11 of the Nurkaman side was repeatedly seen tugging on shirts as he tried to get back on defense. Due to these deliberate actions, he received a yellow card and would have to be cautious for the remainder of the game. The free kick however was wasted; Jaden Ross sent that opportunity well wide of the goal. For the remainder of the first 45, neither side were able to break the deadlock. Maretta and Nurkama walked into their locker rooms with the score of 0-0.

The two teams wee back on the pitch following halftime, and the referee blew his whistle. The second half was underway with both teams looking to score first. 62 minutes in, Maretta were on a counter attack following a cleared Nurkaman corner. Benjamin Clarke led the charge, and crossed the ball into the box where Tyler Thomas coolly headed it home. Another goal was scored 12 minutes later, when a poor clearance by Nurkama's defense was intercepted by Marvin Mayes. Mayes coolly finished inside the penalty box, blasting the ball in the top right corner leaving the goalkeeper no chance at saving it. The final goal of this game occurred in stoppage time with a cross from winger Christian Wallace, which met the feet of striker Jaden Ross. Ross dribbled around the keeper who was off his line, and netted Maretta's third of the night. A few moments later, the referee blew his whistle - Maretta were victorious.

Overall I thought it was a solid performance from my guys. I saw a few things I didn't like in the first half, which I explained to the guys at the break. We came out in the second half as the stronger team, and I'm glad we were able to get the win" said manager Jaden Ross following Maretta's first victory of the tournament.

When asked about his next fixture against the Sword Bloke he replied;
"This will be a much tougher opponent. I understand that they lost their first game, but they'll surly be looking to redeem themselves from that match. We will just have to play with aggressiveness and smartly; as long as we do these things, there is a chance."

Matthewsiania make an impression after a 3-1 win over Vermark
Figs dominate a match against a rather weak pack of Hounds

CLOUDSDALE - Equestrian States What most people expected to be a competitive match between two teams for the first matchday of the Baptism of Fire's 58th edition ended up being an easy to beat game for the Figs from Esportiva over the Hounds from Rushmore. Considered by the outsiders as the dark pony of the group, Matthewsiania, led by an impressive participation from Meluna, ended up controlling most of the match, except for the last minutes, where the Vares ended up smuggling a goal in.

The game started at the Sky-High Coliseum with its' outcome pretty much clear as a possible when Bressinho's shot from the middle of the field hit the hand of Dinlund for a corner kick and at that very corner kick, Bressinho's header ended up hitting the top bar. The Figs' offence didn't cease and a mere ten minutes later, the ball was on Meluna's feet. And he did well enough with it when a very well calculated pass towards Werdickley Safadão's feet for a goal. Later on the first half, a tackle by Salquist to Xowver guaranteed a free kick for the Figs and a good shot by Zé Gatinha found the back of the net. The last goal for the Figs was a result of a great lob pass by Meluna that found McKenzie Colium's head before getting into the goal.

And that was pretty much it. The second half was rather disappointing. Both teams made most of their substitutions, but beyond that, there wasn't a lot to talk aside from the last five minutes. At the end of the match, a surprise offensive move by the Hounds ended with Andersson scoring against Cléston's net. Match over, the Kingdom of Matthewsiania starts with three points and the biggest amount of goals of Group C, followed by Eupheos Anetus at second with 3 points, 2 goals for and no goals against. A goalless tie ended up placing both Velstaende and Flardania in the middle of the group with one point. In the bottom of the group, Vermark edges out Kazirstan thanks to the goal by Andersson while Kazirstan stands on the bottom of the line.

GRADES
Image
PEDRINHO CLÉSTON (6,5)
Did well enough when needed. Could've gone on a Clean Sheet, but failed at that.
Image
MAREK (6,5)
Not a bad display by this Left-Back at all. Gone through a fair match.
Image
SILVANA OVERMARS (7,0)
Clearly the superior side of today's defensive pair. Good performance.
Image
HUGO CENTOPÉIA (5,0)
Wasn't his usual self in the pitch some times and it showed. Responsible for Andersson's goal.
Image
RENNÉ ASTERIX (8,5)
Good showing by Atlético Voador's player. Key on keeping the opposition where they should.
Image
XOWVER (7,5)
Carried his spot on the team around with no problem. His speed helped the team a lot and the tackle he suffered guaranteed a free kick the Figs would convert.
Image
BRESSINHO (6,0)
Not too bad, but lacked a lot in the field every now and then. His instability could've costed more for the team, but thankfully, that wasn't the case.
Image
ZÉ GATINHA (8,0)
Overall good display and enough proof that Mago is doing heavy training on Free Kicks as his curved shot scored the second goal for Matthewsiania.
Image
MELUNA (9,0)
Best player on the field. Meluna played his heart out in the field, doing two assists and being a pain in the neck for the Vares.
Image
WERDICKLEY SAFADÃO (8,0)
He almost opened up a hole in the back of the net with his goal. Beyond that, he did a pretty nice match.
Image
McKENZIE COLIUM (8,0)
His header goal was the top of the mill for this match. Overall pretty good.

Image
PLÍNIO KLAUS (5,0)
Subbed in for Hugo Centopéia at the 87th Minute, two minutes after the goal from Vermark to hold it out. Barely did anything.
Image
KEILY HEIDINGER (6,0)
Subbed in for Bressinho at the 55th minute. Did a decent match, but nothing to write home about.
Image
MOIRA (5,0)
Subbed in for McKenzie Colium at the 87th minute. Barely had any time to do anything.

Three months ago…

“…and with the complete inexperience the majority of these men have facing international-calibre sides, my question is what you think the chances are of Sargkisia making a serious impact in the Baptism of Fire?”

Four weeks before, being asked a question like that with the nation’s media staring expectantly at him would have made the parts of Petyr Zedginidze’s brain that dealt with logical thought and reason shut down entirely. Today, on the other hand, he felt prepared.

In the weeks since he’d first privately then publicly accepted the captain’s armband, Lumir Gelashviliev and the rest of the Sargkisia team had made good on their promise to get Petyr ready for the rigours of captaincy. While his Smyslova teammates were off on holiday, resting, recuperating and relaxing – Roman Korshunov-Antipin being so good as to send him a postcard from the beaches of Sasutary Island – Petyr’s days were spent studying.

First came the lessons in etiquette and anger management. Petyr’s temper was far from the shortest around, but the face of the team could never be seen to snap. It was easy enough to manage off the pitch, but during games, when you were on your last legs and sucking wind to get through the final minutes, tempers frayed. To strengthen him, the team had him running military-grade assault courses – climbing walls, monkey bars, crawling under nets, the works – and then stopping after every two or three sections to answer inane tactical questions.

Then the journalists stepped forward. Led by Georgi Virsaladze, the fearsome sports editor for Tzerkal Sargkisia who’d only recently retired, the press pack may have been tame but they knew how to rile a man and how to pick apart his answers to get contrary soundbites. “It’s like trying to learn another language,” Petyr had whined at the time, prompting Virsaladze to snarl back, “It’s using common sense. I’m not surprised you don’t recognise it.”

Finally, up stepped Lumir Gelashviliev. In his eyes and with his experience managing Poszar Savoprinov, he treated his captain like a second assistant coach and it was that role he wanted to push Petyr into as well. At 28, Petyr knew there was every chance he’d end up getting disrespected by some of Sargkisia’s veterans, whoever might end up being chosen, and despite all of the previous weeks being able teaching him humility and respect, now Petyr needed to learn to throw his authority around when necessary.

The foundations were set, the cornerstones in place. Now all that remained for Petyr was to prove he’d learned and to that end, Gelashviliev had called a press conference to announce the squad list and the friendly fixtures. Then, with less than fifteen minutes warning, Gelashviliev told Petyr he’d be heading it up.

“Good,” began the captain. He spoke slowly, ensuring he had everything in the right place, but he’d been assured most of the assembled journalists understood this was part of a learning process. He was unlikely to have to deal with anybody too intransigent. “It is true that most of my teammates haven’t played internationally before, but the purpose of the Baptism of Fire is just that. Most of the men and women we will be facing won’t have played international football before either.”

The asker nodded, but wasn’t satisfied yet. “While that is true, it doesn’t exactly answer my question. What do you think the ceiling is for Sargkisia in this tournament?”

An easy question. Petyr knew exactly what the party line was and adhered to it like glue. “I think we should be very disappointed in ourselves if we don’t at least make the quarter-finals.” Something clicked in his brain, and Petyr felt himself shift up a gear. “You are right in that not much of the team has international experience, but I have. I have played against and beaten some of the world’s finest club teams, I’ve done battle against some truly excellent players, so I can attest to the quality of my teammates because they’ve posed me more of a challenge. I had a harder game against Nikol Sabauliev than anybody I faced in the last MPL season, and I think Alex Nikoladze would join me in crediting Simon Shaburidze with similar praise.”

“You’re surely not saying your teammates are the best players in the world?” The question came from a younger woman in the far corner in the room. Looking at her – dressed smartly, but not nearly as well-scrubbed as the big names – Petyr guessed she was either junior sports magazine or well-connected blogger. That skill, spotting the friends from the foes and the big names from the little fish, had been part of his training as well

“I’m saying that we learn from experience. We can observe the greats of the world playing and argue that one is superior to the other, but I have physically gone up against guys like Per Mertesacker and Cosmin Dobrescu and I believe that Nikol has and can pose me just as much, if not more, of a challenge.” Petyr leaned back, spreading his hands palm-out. “That’s just my opinion of the matter. You can take from it what you wish.”

“Next question, please,” supplied Gelashviliev, clearly keen to keep the flow going.

“Tzerkal Sargkisia here,” said the smartly-dressed woman in the front row, eager to chip in. “You've got three months to form a national team from scratch, what can we expect to see in the coming weeks?”

Petyr could recognise a softball when he saw it. A nice, open-ended question, where all he had to do was talk up the friendlies, acknowledge the training methods and promise to work hard. “We've got some friendly matches on the schedule coming up and I think it's fair to say that the boss is going to be using them to assess where his best starting lineup is likely to come from. We've got seven games confirmed so far and you can expect to see a lot of different players in a lot of formations.”

They were sailing. They were on the home stretch, and Petyr actually felt good about it. It was hardly a conference that would go down in history beyond having happened, but everybody started somewhere. A couple more questions came down the pipe and Petyr sent them flying with ease – maybe they weren't home-run answers, but solid doubles and triples. He even managed to crack a half-decent joke that raised a few laughs.

Then came the landmine on the road.

“As somebody who was born and raised in Sargkisia and has talked extensively about his love for the nation, how can you condone the Margelash Movement sponsoring and supporting terror attacks on Sargkisia and Lzherusskia alike?”

Petyr blinked twice. He'd felt Gelashviliev tense up and judging by the way the rest of the room were looking at the speaker, he wasn't a normal part of the press pack. He hadn't prepared for independence questions and here and now, all of the fine words he'd used before when arguing his case deserted him. The accusations about the Margelash Movement, by far the biggest pro-independence activist group on the Lzher Peninsula, were not new ones but were a touchy subject. Supporters argued that Blue Flag claiming to align themselves with the Margelash Movement meant nothing, detractors that they wouldn't have come out if it were untrue.

Looking out at the crowd, Petyr knew this was going to be the only thing anybody mentioned from the press conference. The rest of the press might not have asked the question themselves, but they would absolutely use anything and everything he said if it made a good headline. Maybe a smarter or a man more experienced could have salvaged the situation, but Petyr was not that man.

Thankfully, Gelashviliev was. “Mr. Zedginidze's views on Sarg independence are not a matter for this press conference, a fact that was made clear. There will be no further questions. Security, please remove that man from the premises immediately.” Standing and gently pulling Petyr to his feet, Gelashviliev led his captain out of the room, leaving most of the press frustrated and infuriated.

“You can't run forever, Zedginidze!” shouted the lone speaker as the security guards descending, grabbing an arm each and frog-marching him from the building.

In the privacy of the corridor, Gelashviliev stopped and let out a short breath. “And it was going so well.”

“Sorry, boss,” apologised Petyr, not quite sure what to say. “I just...”

“Didn't know what to say, you weren't expecting it. Of course not.” Shaking his head, Gelashviliev turned away. “I thought everybody in there had been vetted already. You'll be facing a lot of those questions now, I can assure you. There's only one thing for it.”

His heart sinking, Petyr closed his eyes and yanked the plaster off. “And that is?”

“It's back to the classroom, Petyr. We're all going to have to learn some politics.”

Match Recap vs. Palfania

Lineup:
GK - Boris Jeladze - 7 - Good through most of the game and worked hard to shut down the serious Palfanian attacks, but at fault for the equalising goal.
RB - Zura Chantuliev - 8 - A strong performance from the youngster who rendered opposing midfield Michael Noone relative non-factor
CB - Timur Revazishviliev - 7 - A consistent if unspectacular game, marred slightly by the unnecessary booking four minutes from time
LB - Jorg Nizharadze - 5 - Was the clear weak link of the defensive three and couldn't keep up with Liam Walsh's pace
DM - Nikol Sabauliev - 8 - A solid choice for the man of the match, after starting the move that led to the opening goal
RM - Dominik Tsintadze - 6 - Seemed a little rattled early on and never quite put the pieces together before being substituted.
CM - Otto Vakhishviliev - 6 - Had a tough time trying to contain both Palfanian central midfielders and later complained of being spread too thin
LM - Simon Shaburidze - 6 - Not a noteworthy performance, although many will attribute this to the rumours of a minor injury he hid.
AM - Alex Nikoladze - 8 - Continued his excellent form from the MPL campaign and can consider himself unlucky to be held off the scoresheet
ST - Koba "Kobra" Vardanidze - 6 - Will go down in history as the first Sarg goalscorer, but was bottled up for much of the game thereafter.
ST - Petyr Zedginidze - 7 - An assured display as team captain and could easily have had a goal to go with his assist

Academica: A History
Anders Hornqvist, Ph.D | Videnhagen University Press

Foreword

The Scientist

Formed in 1775, Academica Football Club was no more than eleven faculty members. These eleven professors, instructors, and lecturers came from the different departments of the university itself. It was an all-star team of sorts. During most of the year, football at the university was played in an inter-departmental style. For example, the Scientists would play the Philosophers, the Economists would play the Psychologists. There were 12 different departments at the time, and they would play twenty two matches from October to March. In April, the University would hold its selection for the Academica Football Club. Each club nominated its best player to join the club.

Academica FC would practice for a month before heading off to the Hounds' Cup which began in 1780. There were only four teams in this competition until a few years after the beginning of the nineteenth century. One of these of course, was Academica. Academica was joined by Prairie FC (today, Agriholm Prairie), the Shipwrights, and Mountaineers (today, Raskstad United). These four team were the only four major football clubs up until 1812, and did not become professional clubs until the formation of the Football Association of Vermark in 1820, when Academica became open to more then just those who were connected with the University.

When we look back in time at the records of the eighteenth century Hounds' Cup, we see a few interesting trends. For instance, the cup was almost always won by Academica. In fact, from 1780, to the end of that century, Academica only lost the cup three times: once to Shipwrights and twice to Mountaineers. Secondly, when we look at the selections for the roster of Academica, the same positions were more often then not filled by the same departments. That brings us to our study of Academica and how it pertains to the greater history of Vermark.

The most obvious of the roster trends was that scientists almost always played goalkeeper. It was very rare that a scientist play something different. It might actually make sense why this is. Scientists study gravity, trajectory, and motion. They would be able to estimate where a shot was going better than anyone else on the field. Additionally, scientists would be able to make long range passes, either by throw or by drop-kick. When it came to diving, the scientists' knowledge of body kinetics and anatomy in general must have been beneficial at times. Without a doubt, science allowed these goalkeepers to be superb.

During this time, referred to as the Golden Age, scientific breakthroughs came left and right. In the physics field that was so influential to the performance of these netminders, there were many theories and experiments being produced that dealt with light and color. Mirrors were a common object of study, and the idea of lasers was being theorized and even researched, but not quite developed. Biologists went on a rampage in the field of anatomy. Trying to locate the specialized regions of the brains was a common endeavor. Many biologists were also studying the creation of artificial blood from elements found in nature. Finally, the chemists also had their success stories. They created a version of the Period Table that focused on states of matter known as the Statutory Table. Oxidation-Reduction Reactions were also commonly studied. The chemists from this time would have been proud to inform you that there were only laboratory fires a handful of times. Thankfully, all of the old chemistry building still stands, and it is currently used for campus food preparation and laundry.

By far the most remembered Golden Age scientist was Anders Alfredsson. He was a physicist and a, you guessed it, goalkeeper. While he blocked more than his fair share of shots, he was most well known for having the ability to kick the ball from the six yard box to any point on the midfield line with superhuman accuracy. He was equally precise during his day job. He was most well known for his study of light passing through windows and how it affected the general temperature inside. He made multiple theories that suggested that warmth in a room came mostly from warm air outside the window versus the inward light itself. Though his ideas may have seemed rudimentary, in the cold of Vermark during this time, he was hailed as a savior of sorts.

The scientists of this time were all very talented thinkers. But it is also important to note that they had immense talent when it came to preventing goals. However, credit must be owed to the backs who were a goalkeeper's best friend.

Sylvackia wins 6-0 against Seventeen Syllables
First BoF match ends with a win for Sylvackia against Seventeen Syllables' team.

Image
The Sylvackian team played very well on the pitch

Overview:

It was a sunny day in the city of Stalliongrad as the two teams entered Diamond Park. The large stadium gave a great outcome as many Sylvackian fans filled the stadium, cheering on their players throughout the match. The match ended with Sylvackia gaining a great win against the Seventeen Syllables team, scoring six goals and giving Sylvackian striker Sayacu a hat trick. This great outcome has sparked optimism for the team and fans alike. Hopefully Sylvackia can gain more wins in the future of the tournament and advance from the Group Stages into the Round of 16. If Sylvackia can pull this off the team might even have a chance of getting to the finals but with four more games to be played in the group stages they will have to play even harder to keep their current position in the rankings.

Match events:

Going into the game Sylvackia kept their regular starting lineup and substitutes. Kick-off begins with Sylvackia in possession of the ball advancing into Seventeen Syllables' side of the pitch. Shot by Sayacu goes wide after pressure from Seventeen Syllablesian defenders. After the teams struggle for ball possession in mid-field a throw-in is rewarded to Sylvackia after the ball goes out. Sylvackia mid-fielder Dufor's pass finds Sayacu who takes a shot, the ball just flying past the Seventeen Syllablesian goalkeeper. Two more goals followed, one by striker Oyeri and the other by center-middle Shyenom, giving Sylvackia a 3-0 lead in the first half.

Coming into the second half of the game we see the Seventeen Syllables team becoming more aggressive and getting more chances with a shot off-target followed by one on-target but the Sylvackian goalkeeper, Estturiss, manages to make some great saves and maintain a clean slate for the entire game. The second half also sees Sayacu getting a hat trick with two goals in the second half assisted by Lomstai and Danale. Another goal by Oyeri in the second half gives Sylvackia a final score of 6-0.

This match sees great effort from the entire team with good work done by the Sylvackian offense and goalkeeper Estturiss making great saves in the match. The Sylvackian defense also did some great working clearing the ball and good passing from the mid-fielders.

Player statistics:

Sayacu - 3 goals
Oyeri - 2 goals
Shyenom - 1 goal
Dufor - 1 assist
Lomstai - 1 assist
Danale - 1 assist

Next matches:

This win sees Sylvackia at the top of their group with 3 points. Their next match will be against Korchayk, a team that has also won their game 1-0 against Flick Jostle. They are currently standing in second, tied with Affiliated South Califan Sprawls in the group. The game will be played tonight at Wild Grounds stadium in Everfree. About the match Sylvackian manger Rynp had this to say:

It's hard to feel afraid after a 6-0 victory but we have to stay on our toes and not get cocky. This victory only means we have to play harder to maintain our ranking.

Group stages:

MD1: Sylvackia vs. Seventeen Syllables @ Diamond Park (Feb.28) 6-0
MD2: Sylvackia vs. Korchayk @ Wild Grounds (Mar. 1)
MD3: Sylvackia vs. Affiliated South Califan Sprawls @ Star Stadium (Mar.2)
MD4: Sylvackia vs. Flick Jostle @ Diamond Park (Mar.3)

THE ULSELSHEIM REPORT - STARLINGS DRAW ONE-ALL IN DREADFULLY DREARY MATCH AGAINST 300-TON CAT
Emmanuel Orselssen - "Like seriously what is their problem?"
Sovereign-Socialist Republics 1–1 Hakifao

Sovereign-Socialist Republics (1): A single sixty-foot-tall anthropomorphic tabby cat
Hakifao Starlings (4-4-2): Andersson; Olsen,Henrikson,Isoaho,Jonsson; Pederssen,Borg,Nilssen,Mäkela; Niemi,Aronsen

To whoever the Starlings just played - you guys are weird as heck.

When the purple-and-blue-clad Hakifao Starlings trotted out onto the pitch, they had no idea what they were about to face. One minute after kickoff, however (which was given to the opposite team), the Sovereign-Socialists' national football team made its debut.

"Good God," said announcer Johan Lindberg on Hakifao National Sports Television (HNSTV), "it's a giant cat!"

And sure enough, it was a giant cat. A tabby cat, to be precise, weighing in at three hundred tons and sixty feet tall. It nearly stepped on Alexei Isoaho while languidly walking (another thing - it walked on two legs for some mysterious reason), the experienced right-back only barely managing to, stunned, dive headlong out of the way, and then kicked the ball three inches over the crossbar. From the middle of the pitch. By accident. Someone screamed - possibly Adam Henrikson, but the madcap Konstans Mäkela, thinking quickly, knocked the ball forwards as a goalkick and quickly dribbled around the cat for an easy goal.

Kickoff again. The cat once again kicked it - this time, into the goal. Terrified, Isak Andersson collapsed into a gibbering wreck and was quickly replaced by Arnur Valquist. Unwilling to let the cat kick off again, the Starlings passed around the pitch for eighty-nine minutes, whereupon the game ended.

When asked about the differences between playing a sixty-foot-tall cat and playing eleven somewhat-normal human beings, Isak Andersson remarked calmly: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA SWEET MOTHER OF GOD THAT CAT WAS GIANT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA," and collapsed.

"I'm never playing against a team of anthropomorphic animals again," said Feyjänian defender Brynjar Jönsson, checking the brackets in the hope they wouldn't have to eventually play Flardania.

Emmanuel Orselssen - Versålölm

The referee's whistle blew, and off they went. From the sideline, Emmanuel Orselssen watched stonily as the two Northern sides clashed. He had one of his best lineups out to play the Vjaals - but with one exception. Herlek Korhonen, the team captain and right midfielder, was out for medical reasons.

Still, even without Korhonen the Starlings were playing well, especially at midfield. Konstans Mäkela was surprising the Vjaals with his unique mixture of brilliance and insanity - Orselssen hadn't played him against the Vjaals often, just for use as a secret weapon. The defense looked strong and the attack good. Quickly the Blue Eagles began to fall back against the Hakifao onslaught.

The attack was fast and furious, spurred on by Mäkela's brilliant dribbling prowess. The midfielder would cut in and fall back, always managing to push the Vjaals a bit backwards. Elias Borg and Viljami Karlsson were strong in the center and on the wing as well, and with Daniel Niemi and Gordon Andreasson in front, the Starlings quickly had their first shot on goal. Karlsson found Niemi open in the box and passed, the ball deflecting off sweeper Kevin Kristiansson's foot and towards Andreasson instead. Andreasson wasted no time pouncing on the loose ball, and only Andreas Haugen's quickness in net stopped the Starlings from being up one-nil after six minutes.

Haugen deflected the ball to the side, and Kristiansson recovered quickly and cleared it forwards. But no sooner had the Vjaals gained the ball then did they lose it again, Alexei Isoaho taking the ball from striker Magnus Carlsson outside the box with a well-placed tackle. Isoaho - Carlsson was a classic matchup, and as usual they had been instructed to keep an eye on each other. The overpowering striker and the wily center-back had been the best players on their northern teams for many years now, and all of the North watched carefully each time they met.

The Blue Eagles stole it from Hakifao again, and then the ball began a long and arduous trek throughout every possible location in the midfield. Both sides were a bit tired from the initial excitement, and even Konstans Mäkela's attacks seemed a bit more subdued before a weary-looking Vjaal defense stopped him. By halftime, the score was a weary nil-nil draw despite the Hakifaos' best efforts. Emmanuel Orselssen was beginning to realize that it would take far more effort to easily defeat the Blue Eagles as he had hoped to do in their away fixture. He wondered how Herlek Korhonen was doing...

Ulselsheim State Hospital - The Hakifao Federation

Herlek Korhonen hadn't really thought much of his fatigue. When he'd visited the doctor to address the issue, he'd been told it was a hormonal imbalance. Something to do with the pancreas. So he'd gone back out and played, albeit not quite as well as before, and the media took it as nothing more than what you'd expect out of a thirty-five-year-old right halfback who'd been physically twenty-five for the past fifteen years. Still, something told him it wasn't quite right - he'd been perfectly fine at thirty-four, and thirty-five was only one larger. There had to be another cause.

Sure enough, when the weakness became worse, he decided upon another trip to the hospital after the Empire Reunion Cup finals. When it suddenly intensified and he inexplicably fainted for the first time in his life, he was forced to miss the first match so a cure could be quickly found.

They'd run a few tests on him, and now he was waiting in the lobby watching the two teams battle out the first half to a nil-nil standstill. Waiting apprehensively for the results of his test.

"Mr. Korhonen, Mr. Herlek Korhonen?" that was his doctor, a balding, emotional man by the name of Karlson.

"Yes?"

"Could you come to my office? The test results came in..." he said, voice trailing off gently. Herlek's blood froze. He followed him, heart pounding.

"I'm sorry, but you have..." the rest of the conversation was a whisper. Herlek, for only the second time in his life, fainted.
