*puts on presidential hat*

It's about this time of the cycle that people start the debate about how often we should have World Cups. The following two statements are usually made.

"The sign-up thread is up already? But we literally only just finished the last World Cup!"

and, on the opposite side of the coin

"Fewer people sign up if we have fewer tournaments. The sign-up thread should have been up ages ago!"

Regarding the first statement:
This has been said increasingly often over the last few years despite record-breakingly long delays between World Cups. People say it regardless of how long the duration is between two tournaments.

Regarding the second statement:
This argument does not hold up when analysed. 2014, a year with only three World Cups, saw record participation. Numbers have decreased steadily since then, but the amount of WCs per year has not decreased. Participation and WCs per year do not appear to be correlated. The rate of three WCs per year is as low as it has ever been. There were 4 WCs per year in 2010 and 2011, and 5 per year in 2012 and 2013. Participation steadily increased from 2010 to 2014 before falling fairly sharply, but is still well above the levels of 2006 and 2009.

Here is a graph. It might not be particularly useful, but here it is nonetheless.
Image

There does seem to be a correlation between 2004 and 2009, but whether there was any causation is up for debate.

Either way, the point is this:

The World Cup happens as often as the community wants it to happen

Sign-ups start when the first bid is made. Voting on bids starts when bids are present for both BoF and WC and when sign-ups start slowing down. Baptism of Fires start when the hosts want, as laid out in their bid thread. World Cups start when the hosts want, as laid out in their bid thread.

In short: For those of you who want more frequent World Cup tournaments: Bid. For those of you who want fewer: Bid.

In shorter: Bid.

Thanks.

President Audio: Complaining about arguments that haven't even started yet since 2002.

I, personally, would like to see a return to a more regulated timeframe, as we had a few years ago (x weeks between World Cup Final n and signups for World Cup n+1 opening).

Obviously the value of x should be long/flexible enough to have a bit of a break for regional tournaments, Olympics, the second half of December, etc.

Thoughts?

Personally, I'd argue that the relevant period is from the beginning of the new forums to present, due to A) NS being much smaller in the early days, B) NS Sports being part of the NationStates sub-forum on Jolt and C) Jolt's forums having all kinds of issues.

I do agree with Krytenia that a more regular timeframe would probably be a good idea (and maybe the practice of temporarily closing signups during voting should be discontinued, unless at least one of the bidding parties requests it).

In order to join the Baptism of Fire, you have to never have played it. Once the World Cup sign-up thread pop up, request to sign for the Baptism of Fire and the World Cup and voi la.

To answer your other question, there's also the Cup of Harmony, which is held following qualifying for nations which failed to qualify for the World Cup. Although exact selection criteria vary by tournament and are at the discretion of the host(s), it is typically for nations which RPed actively during qualifying, but which nonetheless failed to advance. If you RP actively and decently during qualifying, you have a good chance of making it.

There are other lesser tournaments as well, like the Runner Cup and Sporting World Cup, but those don't count for World Cup rankings. And there are regional tournaments too in the three main sporting regions which generally have their own set of rankings or use some combination of that and KPB.

I think it would be wise to have a fixed timeframe.

Perhaps one WC every season? Once in the Spring, another in the Summer, then Autumn, then Winter? Or maybe to make it even clearer once every three and a half months?

I don't know what works better, I am just throwing stuff at the wall. :p

Although having a regulated timing scheme might be good for some of us, it's important to take in consideration the fact that in determinated timeframes, there's a possibility that there's a delay on bids since the potential bidding sides might launch their bids in a timeframe that might be strategical for them in order to have a fair time balance. The thing is that having a "fixed schedule" won't fix the issue at all, since delays will ever exist in case this scenario happens.

I know there are people saying that the bid is too early, but I believe Audio put it best a few weeks ago:

Audioslavia wrote:This has been said increasingly often over the last few years despite record-breakingly long delays between World Cups. People say it regardless of how long the duration is between two tournaments.

On another note, I've decided to delay my next bid until next cycle. I talked with several potential co-hosts about a bid for WC77 but it seems that the combination of last World Cup lasting longer than I'd expected and not being ready to post the bid upon the conclusion of said World Cup (as I'd planned) has pushed the timing of this edition back. Therefore, I am now looking for a potential co-host for World Cup 78 (expected start time: late May or early June) and am also open to the possibility of doing one of those 4-way bids (previously seen in WCs 70 and 73). Those interested should contact me either via Discord or via TG to this nation.

Replying to this here rather than in a bid thread.

Kaboomlandia wrote:The last World Cup ended just two and a half weeks ago. Why so soon?

A bid being posted doesn't necessarily mean the World Cup will be happening any sooner or later than it's usual frequency.

The current rate of 3-and-a-bit World Cups a year is extremely slow compared to any time in NS history going back to 2003. I really don't see any reason for it to get slower.

EDIT: Signups for the next World Cup will be posted soonish. Again: This is normal.
